Stonewall’s Brighton Equality Walk This year’s walk will start at 2pm on Bank Holiday Sunday 2nd May in the Royal Pavilion Gardens and will follow a route drawn up by local sports group BLAGSS along the seafront and through Kemp Town before finishing up for our post-walk party. This year money raised from this event will support Stonewall’s flagship campaign, Education for All. In 2009 Brighton walkers were specifically raising money to fund a DVD version of our play for schools, FIT. Two studies presented at the 17^th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) found that people recently diagnosed with HIV, and some of those with high CD4 counts when they begin treatment, are likely to live as long, or nearly as long, as those without HIV. The findings, reported on aidsmap, highlight the importance of regular testing for HIV. If someone has HIV, early diagnosis means they can begin treatment sooner, making it more likely they’ll live longer and enjoy better health. The first study, from the Dutch ATHENA Cohort, measured the death rate of 4,612 patients in the Netherlands newly diagnosed between 1998 and 2007 over, on average, 3.3 years. The study excluded those who had to start antiretroviral therapy (ART) less than six months after diagnosis or who had an AIDS-defining illness in the first six months. It found that:Those diagnosed at the age of 25 have a life expectancy of 52.7 years (they would live until, on average, the age of 77.7) – just five months less than those without HIV. Men diagnosed at the age of 55 would live 1.3 years less and women 1.5 years less. The second study involved a group of over 80,000 patients from 30 European countries. According to aidsmap, it found that /“men who were not injecting drug users and who had a current CD4 count over 500 were no more likely to die during the follow-up period than their HIV-negative equivalents”/.

YES GENERAL SIR! I AM GAY

The top generals from the Army and the Air Force expressed deep concern on Tuesday about moving rapidly to lift the ban on openly gay service members, saying it could make it harder for their forces to do their jobs while fighting two wars. Both expressed reservations about moving too swiftly to change the policy, and both endorsed the decision by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to deliberately review the issue before acting. And both pledged that they would fully carry out any decision of Congress about gay men and lesbians in the military. Changing the policy that Congress imposed 16 years ago would require legislative action.

The cast of The Little Dog Laughed is led by Rupert Friend as the closeted film star and Tamsin Greig as his acerbic agent. SHOWSTOPPERS! The Improvised Musical! This show began life as a workshop at the Actors’ Centre in London, when Dylan Emery, Adam Meggido and Ken Campbell took a group of actors with little or no impro experience and within a week attempted to get them to perform an hour-long extemporised musical in front of a packed house. This was such as success that Dylan and Adam decided to gather together a group of professionals and create a fully-fledged show. After a few try-outs at The King’s Head in Islington (one of Britain’s great hothouses for the nurturing of new talent in musicals), the project immediately secured financial backing for the Edinburgh Fringe and a London residency. MALAGA MALAGA CITY WAS OFTEN SEEN AS A PLACE YOU WENT THROUGH TO GET TO THE COSTA DEL SOL’S RESORTS. BUT THAT HAS ALL CHANGED. GEORGE PRIOR EXPLORES THE HIDDEN DEPTHS OF A CITY WHICH IS THE HUB FOR MASS TOURISM, BUT WHICH HAS BEEN SPARED ITS UGLIER SIDE.

Seven years ago, the Picasso museum did for Malaga in southern Spain what the Guggenheim did for Bilbao in the North: turned it into a destination. Malaga cottoned on to the fact it should be celebrating its most famous son and over the last decade or so, this shabbychic Mediterranean city has really come into its own thanks to a sophisticated regeneration programme. Cheap flights have long been available from the U.K, but for decades visitors whizzed straight through to the resorts of the Costa del Sol and ignored the city itself, which has help to preserve its identity. Admittedly, from the sidelines it looks all tatty apartment blocks and out of town hypermarkets. But behind this wall of modern development is the city’s true heart; the old town. Bordered to the west by the dry riverbed of rio Guadalmedina, and to the east by the Moorish Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle, the elegant centre opens out before the shimmering Med. The narrow streets and sunny squares house the majority of the main sights as well as the hub of the city’s bustling nightlife. 3SIXTY TRAVEL

Malaga’s most-visited monuments are also its oldest, with the most senior of all being Gibralfaro Castle, which was founded by the Phoenicians and rebuilt by the Arabs. The museum inside chronicles the city’s history over the centuries, but the over-riding reason for a visit is that it has the best views in town. Those panoramic vistas are particularly striking at sunset, when the greens of the towering palms in the port-side park are flooded by light, while the sea sparkles in the background. The castle is open daily from 9am until 8pm and the entrance is free. On your way down from the giddying heights of the Gibralfaro, stop and take in the 11th-century Alcazaba fortress, who’s aromatic gardens will take you on a meandering, cobbled route down to the web of the 19th century lanes and to the imposing Cathedral in the heart of the city. The Cathedral, built in the 1500s, dominates the city’s skyline and its ornate exterior matches the drama of the interior. Head there during mass to see it in it’s full Catholic flair (organs, incense, rosaries - it really goes the whole hog)...and you’ll also avoid paying the 3.50 euros entrance fee! Sooner or later you’ll come across one of the two main squares, Plaza de la Constitucion and Plaza de la Merced, where Picasso was born. His

wild, bohemian creativity pervades the square and La Calle de Brusselas (a bar which recreates the old part of Brussells) is a perfect spot to enjoy a lengthy drink, watching the square getting busier as the moon rises. The bar is one of several gay-friendly drinking establishments on the square and draws a cosmopolitan, mixed crowd of all ages. The bars and clubs around the square, which is arguably the city’s gay hub, seldomly get going before midnight. As for the gay scene, it would be worth taking a ten minute taxi ride (or train should you go before midnight when they stop) to Torremolinos. This town, which lies just west of Malaga city, is home to one of Europe’s biggest gay villages. About 60 bars and clubs cluster around La Nogalera area (opposite the train station) and pulls in locals and tourists all year round. The dutch-run El Gato lounge bar would be a good place to start your evening, before heading to Parthenon which plays a variety of commercial dance up stairs and current house anthems downstairs in the basement. Just past the Bear Bar, you’ll find people snaking around the block to get into Emporio - a club famous for its gogo dancers and sexy staff. By 4am you should be ready for Passion, the biggest, most striking gay club in the area. The mixed, up-for-it party crowd shake their thing to the sounds of the

Most of the other good restaurants are nestled around Calle Larios and La Plaza de la Merced. Look out for Citron which serves a tasty fusion menu opposite Picasso’s birthplace in the square. The area is famous for its moscatel wines and there are worst ways to spend an hour than discovering which one you prefer in Antigua Casa de Guardia (Alameda, 18) which hasn’t changed since the 1840s. You’ll be served from huge barrels, they’ll write your bill on the bar in chalk and wipe it off when you pay (normally €1 a glass).

Back in Malaga itself, the other main square, Plaza de la Constitucion, is a more traditional affair with elegant building and sky-scraping palms and a bustling, chic café and bar scene.

“It’s full of atmosphere and thankfully not over-run with tourists. Yet.” The luxurious, marble-paved, Calle Marques de Larios joins Plaza de la Constitucion from its south side and is one of the city’s principal shopping boulevards. With high street retailers jostling for space alongside classy boutiques and craft shops, the prices can be steep. Cheaper alternatives can be found in the adjacent streets and alleyways. At the bottom of this pedestrianised avenue, turn left and stroll though the park keeping the port, with its cruise ships and fishing boats, on your right and you’ll find the city’s beach. La

MADRID “ GEORGE PRIOR VISITS MADRID, A CITY WHICH HAS BECOME ONE OF EUROPE’S ‘MUST-DO’ CITIES FOR GAY TRAVELLERS. BUT, BE WARNED, YOU’LL NEED A FEW DAYS TO RECOVER.

Madrid’s big pull is its non-stop party spirit and, without doubt, its nightlife and its eating and drinking culture are the main reasons for visiting the Spanish capital. When the dictator, General Franco, died in 1975 the oppression relaxed, and almost over night, life turned into a big disco for Madrid’s population. And the glitterball hasn’t stopped spinning ever since. After a few days in the capital you’ll notice that these never-ending party people look incredibly healthy - you’ll see an extraordinary amount of glowing, beefed-up boys – which is staggering considering the amount of partying that goes on. When you do need to rest your head (even if it is only a disco nap), Madrid has accomodation in abundance. For a mid-budget option, The Abalú hotel (www.hotelabalu.com) in the bohemian area of Malasaña is a good choice. The 17 room boutique hotel has a pop art interior and luxurious stone baths. Double rooms cost from€110. If you want the discreet glamour of an old palace, check out Ava Gardner’s favourite old haunt, House of Madrid (www.casademadrid.com). This 18thcentury building, next to the Royal Palace and its gardens, is a lavish affair with views of Madrid’s opera house. Being able to eyeball a Queen in her natural habitat is costly though, with double rooms costing from about €260 a night.

You’ll find it hard to visit a city that is more

Chueca, with its eccletic old cafés, bars and shops, has become the capital’s epi-centre for all things Gay. It’s trendy, boho atmosphere, rainbow flags, cool stores and scores of beautiful homos, now attracts as many straights as it does queers. But no one bats an eyelid if they see two men snogging at the train station. The Gran Via, built at the beginning of the last century, is Madrid’s busiest avenue with huge, impressive art deco buildings and it’s alive with human and auto traffic alike. Dissecting the city East to West, this is the equivalent of Broadway and like its American counterpart is packed full of theatres and cinemas. Madrid is an interesting blend of the big and bold and the small and quirky. Just a few minutes’ walk from the Gran Via, you’ll come across the old Madrid, which includes Chueca. The narrow streets of the La Latina area are full of magnificent old buildings and ancient old boutiques which take you back centuries. Many of these old houses have also been converted into some of the city’s most fashionable galleries, cafés and restaurants. One of Madrid’s most iconic sights, The Plaza Mayor, dates back to the 1600s and was once the scene of much royal pomp and ceremony. Nowadays, you’re more likely to find a market selling books, souvenirs and fresh produce and a host of tapas bars. Oh and LOTS of tourists. However, if you want a bit of royalty in your trip,

hedonistic”

leave the Plaza Mayor and visit the Palacio Real, which is to Madrid what Versailles is to Paris. Whether an art lover or not, you should not miss Madrid’s three worldfamous art galleries – the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen. I wouldn’t recommend doing them all in the same day though or you’ll suffer art overload. Eating out in Madrid is one of life’s greatest pleasures and for a real flavour of the city, it has to be tapas. Start around 9pm and take a few hours to discover maybe four or five tapas bars in one evening. Incredible tapas bars are all over the city but avoid the ones which have staff that are too confident in English as it means they’ll be touristdriven and offer a weaker menu and will probably be more expensive. La Bardemcilla (Calle Augusto Figueroa), which is owned by Penelope Cruz’s actor boyfriend, Javier Bardem, is a firm favourite of mine as it offers traditional Spanish tapas with a luxury, contemporary twist. If you don’t want to explore the tapas route, Gula Gula restaurant (Gran Via) offers tongue in cheek cabaret during dinner and you’ll be served by some fierce drag queens. You’ll find it hard to visit a city that is more hedonistic than Madrid. And you’ll find it hard to think of a reason not to go back.

MATT DUNN PERSONAL TRAINER

Matt has been working as a personal trainer in Brighton and Hove for the last 8 years. He trains clients at Alive Fitness in Brighton and ZT fitness in Hove as well as outdoor and home sessions. www.teamdunn.co.uk What should the top priorities of a personal trainer be? Be versatile and client focused. Listen to what your client wants and work with them to achieve their goals, not yours. Everybody is different, what works for one person may not suit another. How do you motivate your clients? I like to make pt sessions challenging and fun. It’s much easier to stay motivated if you enjoy your workouts. I encourage clients to focus on their success and build on positives, learn from negatives but don’t dwell on them. Have you ever had a difficult client? Sure, people often approach a trainer because they are unhappy with their fitness or appearance, my job is to identify potential barriers and work with the client to come up with solutions together. Giving people answers is easy, getting them to come up with the answers and then put them into practice, that’s the challenging bit! What are your best skills? Listening and patience.

Who’s you favourite recording artists? I have a soft spot for Lady Ga Ga at the moment – Love those outfits! Who would you most like to meet and why? Anyone who is fun to be around. I’m inspired by people who love to laugh and look at life positively. What would you like to be doing in five years from now? Still be enjoying my life here in Brighton with a diary full of satisfied clients! What is your major weakness? Videogames – They are so addictive! So what have you arranged for our readers this month? If you are short on time, performing big movements using big muscle groups together can be a really effective way to burn lots of calories. Working your upper and lower body together also requires lots of oxygen so expect your heartrate to be high throughout this workout!

How important is nutrition? Extremely. Your body will perform far better with a good balanced diet. If you want to change your appearance then you have look at diet alongside exercise. It’s much easier to consume calories than burn them, particularly if your job is quite sedentary. Allowing yourself a treat on occasion is fine and can make it easier to maintain healthy balanced eating long-term.

For a quick total body blast perform the following exercises to fatigue as a circuit and repeat up to 3 times. Choose a weight that you can lift between 10 and 20 repetitions to fatigue, being careful not to compromise your form in order to lift a heavier weight. Your core muscles will be challenged by this workout, remember to engage them by drawing and holding your navel back towards your spine. Be careful not to hold your breath and don’t be afraid to ask a trainer for advice if you are unsure about your technique.

What do you eat? A balanced diet consisting of whole grain carbohydrates lean meat and fish and fresh fruit and vegetables. I’m on the move a lot so I snack on oatcakes and fruit and nuts between clients.

PERSONAL VOICES CHRISIE

EDKINS

Meet Chrissie, a talented young transgender, who opens up to 3SIXTY on her fabulous lifes journey. I was seven years old when I first realised something was wrong! I never enjoyed time with my male friends, I hated boys’ toys, clothes and having short hair. Out of jealousy I used to break all my sister’s toys because I wanted them. As I grew older, the feelings grew stronger, I used to watch my Sister get ready to go out, and remember wishing that I could wear that make up, those clothes as well as wishing they would accept me as one of their group. With the onset of puberty came absolute disappointment, my worst fears were coming true, I was becoming too tall, my voice was deepening, my features became ever more masculine and my body started to grow way too much hair! Puberty also brought a confusing awareness of my own sexuality, I found myself attracted to both Girls and Boys. I can’t put into words how desolate and confused I felt during those adolescent years, it really was the worst time of my life. I used to ‘dress up’ behind closed doors to try and make myself look the same on the outside as I felt on the inside, eventually getting caught while dressed as a girl by my Sister and Mother. My Sister, initially found this funny while my mother tried to support me. To my lasting regret I lied to my mother about how I felt and hid my true feelings from her. Thinking back, I guess I was scared, on top everything else I was trying to cope with I could not face people making fun of me. I suppressed my feelings for a number of years but eventually the strain was too much. I tried to kill myself on a number of occasions, I tried overdosing, jumping out of windows etc all in all, I thought that I was at rock bottom. Then at 19, my Mother died, I lost forever the chance to tell her who I really was. I have few regrets, but leaving telling my Mother the truth till it was too late is definitely one of them! A few years later, I ‘came out’ to my long-term girlfriend, she supported me and helped me to ‘come out’ to my Father. I told him about being bisexual and transgendered, expecting the worst, I was pleasantly surprised when he said “I kinda knew” and “you will always be my son no matter what”......“sorry to call you son but you know what I mean”.. It didn’t bother him, it was such a load off my chest. This gave me the courage to go and see my Doctor who referred me to a specialist Psycho-Sexual Counsellor who later further referred me to a Gender Psychiatrist, a few months later I was prescribed the Hormone treatment that I wanted. 3SIXTY PERSONAL VOICES

I had been living ‘full time’ as a woman for a couple of years, life was starting to be what I had always wished it could be when I was savagely beaten in my own home, my only crime was that of being transgender! After this, I retreated, my relationship broke up, on top of this, mylast Grandparent died, my Uncle too and then my Father all in one year. I was lost, I never left the house and started to drink too way too much. Then one day, I don’t know why or what sparked the change, I woke up and resolved not to let anything or anyone beat me. I started once again to do things that meant a lot to me, such as indulge my love of photography, film and music. Music is, and has always been my first love. I made music for years but never let anyone listen to it as I hated my voice so much. But something just clicked and I started letting my friends listen to me. With their encouragement I became more confident not only with my music but also in myself, I appeared on The Trisha Goddard Television Show supporting transgender issues, and signed by two respectable modelling agencies’ I have been featured in a number of magazine, and internet articles and started to play my music to live audiences, I got to the semi finals in the recent Queer As Talent Competition. Today, I am more content than I ever felt possible, I am developing my passion for music as a solo artist by working with Play Records in London. Before I go, I would just like to say, I, and others like me go through the mill, living testaments if you will to the phrase ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. If at this point, I am supposed to sign off, leaving you with an enduring thought, it would be this...‘Never give up on your dreams, don’t be afraid to be yourself!’ Whether that is an enduring thought or not is for you to decide, but I like to think it is what my Mother would say if she could see me now.

PERSONAL VOICES Meet KATSOMAYA, creative music director and DJ transgender, “I SEE MYSELF as female. Transgender is a word society attaches to me, I appreciate some people may see me only as transgender. Being female is part of which I am not all of who I am. As a creative music director and DJ, developing my own company, my experiences in the business community have been mixed, one business agency commented the world transgender is a “problem” and a bit of a joke in the business world, and advised I remove all use of the word transgender from my business plan as it may be positive discrimination! Huh? Hello? Confused dot com In the arts community however, I have so far met some wonderful singers, musicians, and producers who accept me, and have been warm and supportive, I find creative people are generally more open minded than people in some other businesses. AT the beginning of our friendship one female friend asked “what does transgender mean? “, I explained, “in my soul and spirit I am female, and in time my external self will reflect all of that”

Sometimes guys enquire about where I am in physical terms, in less than subtle ways to say the least, but that says more about their ignorance and how broke down they are. My mum sometimes is ac-

cepting, depending on her mood at the time, we have been through many difficult times, and I’m not sure she will ever fully come to terms with who I am, but I understand we ask a lot of parents in this, and have to give them time, I have friends in similar relationships and their parents kinds hope they will “pull themselves together”, sometimes I just smooth it over, but in any family being able to get past differences, and support each other still is what ultimately determines a good relationship I’m blessed with some won-

derful, loving friends, my lil’ sis, we lean on each other, and give each other strength and inspiration and energy, you can’t do it alone, were a pretty awesome crew

I want to shake them, some sections of society may not be ready.

Some of the mature transgender women I have met are very cynical and embittered, you have to speak as you find, and while their views may be based on personal experience, when they tell younger girls “society will never accept you, your life will be miserble” I want to shake them some sections of society may not yet be ready for transgender females to make major progress. I am aware of that, there’s a lack of lobbying, for rights and proactive transgender employers, and info is often hard to find on many issues, but you can only change things by having the strength and power and self belief to be yourself and follow your dreams. In my case, performing and creating music shows and making music, you have to choose to live your life as You, regardless of any haters, believe in yourself and the happiness you deserve” 3SIXTY Magazine Ltd | 25

CINEMA | A SINGLE MAN The last couple of years have seen a wealth of movies deal with life and death, and what makes us human. Some have been successful (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Fountain, The Lovely Bones) and others not so (Ahem - I Am Legend and Disney’s A Christmas Carol!). A Single Man is one of those rare gems that takes a potentially depressing subject, that of a man who has lost his partner, and plans his own suicide, and then takes you on a journey of self discovery that is emotionally rewarding. Colin Firth steps out from supporting charachter roles, and gives us a gay lead role which could have been played melancholic, and fills it with english stioc nuances that make the viewer emapathise and feel his every thought. As this magazine goes to print we find out if Mr Firth wins that long deserved Best Actor nod , and Tom Ford for an outstanding first screenplay and stab at directing, at this years Oscar Ceremony. DVD | LUCKY BASTARD

What happens when you fall for the wrong man, and get caught up in the realms of passion? Thats the premise that Lucky Bastard seeks to explore. When Rusty, a succesful, good looking designer, has his boyfriend leave town, he meets Denny, a street hustler. Sparks fly with immediacy, and a burgeoning physical love affair ensues. The plot doesn’t shy away from dealing with issues such as HIV and Crystal Meth addiction, and both sides of the debate for pro and anti drug taking is explored. The ending feels like a bit of a cop out compared to some of the plot risks taken here, but is never the less a thought provoking synopsis to make you question what makes a relationship real and worth fighting for. BOOTCAMP DAY ONE

Boot Camp for season one was hosted by the Cumberland Hotel in Bournemouth, on the South Coast. We decided oN day one to make it more of a chill out day, so that the contestants could get to know each other,. 11 contestants from 5 cities, they were pretty excited and it was amazing to see them bond together so quickly. Julian Bennett joined us for a bit of coaching and photographer Anthony Parry from Cariff came down for the photo shoot. The afternoon was filled with planning ahead, schedules and letting them open up and telling us what the competition meant to them. Over the past 5 months we have seen them develop their talent and become more comfortable with whom they are, young, talent gay men and woman that have a special voice that they have wanted to share and be comfortable with themselves.

The evening we took a trip down to the triangle and enjoyed a meal at the Bakers Arms, I have to give the team there 5 stars for fine hospitality and food. As a chef myself there is one thing i can commend the Bakers Arms for its mighty fine clean kitchen. I was invited to check out there facilities on a previous visit and I was pleasantly surprised to see a kitchen in a fine state. After a few bottles of wine and walk around to a somewaht quiet night, it was agreed with a big week ahead that we would all have an early night. The team of Queer As Talent would like to say a big thank you to Steve Mike and the team for a great night.

terested in trying to get people to create dance, even those who might feel it is beyond them, I have created a tool to aid this. We recently did a midnight workshop at the Basement Nightclub in Brighton, all the video’s and information about DanceSpinner are all on our website have a look.

Tony V catches up with Jonathon to see where it all started. T.) Your currently with the Rambert Dance Company, T.) How long have you been performing? J.) I have been dancing and jumping around on stage since I was little, but performing professionally in British dance companies for the last ten years. T.) At what age did you first discover that you wanted to be a dancer? J.) I think my mother discovered it first! I was spotted when I was three, bopping around at the back of a keep fit class and it was recommended that I come along and join in with some modern dance. Everyone was a lot older than me and the classes mainly involved transforming yourself from a seed into a tree and running around like a kite – I loved it. After that I started training in Ballet, which I found really challenging as my body wasn’t really a natural fit for the difficult shapes in classical technique, it was quite a jump from being a kite. At the age of fifteen I decided to try and consider dance as a career and so I began working towards auditioning for dance schools. T.) Where did you do your initial training? J.) I applied to many colleges at sixteen (both modern and classical) and felt that, (probably quite arrogantly), as I was a boy, I should be able to choose where I wanted to go. Being turned down by most schools for being too stiff or not having the required physique came as quite a shock. I was, however offered a place to study at the Rambert School, I grabbed this with both hands and I haven’t looked back since. T.) Have you performed with any big names? J.) I’ve done quite a few Gala’s representing the modern dance world alongside some of today’s ballet stars, which has always been nice. I’ve also done pantomime with the late Jeremy Beadle, does that count? T.) If there was one stage you could perform at which would that be? J.) Probably the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, performing to that many people would be such a huge rush, I think the crowd might be a bit bemused by a modern dance solo though! T.) Do you do any teaching? J.) Yes it has always been very important to me to teach. I have my own education project www.dancespinner. com which has been flourishing nicely. I am really in-

The tour started in Brightonand from March 10th we go to Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mord, Then Newcastle, Sheffield, winding up in London (25th May). Come along and have a look Rambert really does have some of the best dancers in the country, some of the things you will see at a Rambert performance will be quite breathtaking.

T.)What has been your greatest achievement to date J.) This is where I blow my own trumpet!... Standing in the Royal Opera House and being the first Modern Dancer to win the best male critics circle award felt pretty good, seeing my face on the big screen at the Olivier Awards was nice too. T.) What advice can you give our younger readers that are pursuing a career in dance J.) Be very tenacious, and consider making your own work, this can be as satisfying as having someone make something for you. T.) Being out and open about your sexuality has it effected you in getting any lead roles. J.) I don’t think there’s anywhere more liberal than the dance world! This has never been a problem. T.) Do you have a partner and how long have you been together J.) Yes, we have been together a year and a half, but known each other a lot longer. T.) Is he a dancer J.) Yes with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures T.) How does he cope with you being on the road on tour J .) Well often he is on tour too, a dance company is quite like a loving but slightly dysfunctional family, he has his and I have mine. This is great but it’s nice to get away from dance, we spend most weekends together, it seems to work well. 3SIXTY UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

This is coupled with combined fuel economy of 57.6 mpg.

The only problem this car faces is that it is just not very attractive, whichever angle you look at it from. Surely that is largely the point of a convertible? I agree it is down to personal taste, so if you like the looks it’s the sensible choice. 3SIXTY motors

JAGUAR XFR

T

here is no denying Jaguar has had its fair share of troubles over the last 20 years. It was privatised, and then sold off to Ford for exorbitant sum in 1989. The American giant had plans to turn it into a British BMW, but played too heavily on the company’s heritage. What we ended up with was a confused retro design language that appealed to elderly buyers who remembered the cars of old. Everyone else just carried on buying German. Fords financial woes and Jaguars inability to make a profit resulted in

TOP CAT RETURNS

its sale along with Land Rover to the Indian conglomerate Tata Motors in 2008. By this time the company had abandoned plans to sell in large volumes and was to instead concentrate on the profitable luxury and sports car segments. Launched in late 2007, the XF was the beginning of a new era for Jaguar. It was a bold move away from retro styling and set a course for the design of future Jaguars that was relevant to the 21st century. It was striking, progressive and purposeful, yet still elegant as Jaguars always had been. The car needed to compete with it German rivals head on and not remain a left field choice. The car enjoyed critical acclaim for its chassis, refinement , fine engines and its thoroughly original interior. In 2009 Jaguar launched a brand new V8 engine of 5 litres. In supercharged form it formed the

basis of the XFR sports saloon. This new engine produced a massive 503 PS and was coupled with jaguar’s superb 6 speed auto gearbox. Styling changes were minimal with air cooling ducts in the bumper and bonnet to cool the supercharger. Larger wheels completed the subtle look. This car, however was to be no BMW M5. While the BMW is to all intents and purposes a racing car with a saloon body, the Jaguar had to be just a devastatingly fast luxury car. This is the key to why the XFR has simply moved the performance saloon game on to another level. Despite being awesomely fast and sporting it is capable of being completely docile when required. In terms of performance, the car will hit 60mph in 4.7 secs. Were it not limited to 155mph it would likely top over 180mph. What really amazes though

47

“It still feels like a

luxury car

you could drive for hours at a time”

is the torque of the supercharged engine. Put your foot down in any gear and the car just lunges toward the horizon. Even with this performance potential it still feels like a luxury car you could drive for hours at a time.

T

he interior is a triumph. Little different

from the regular XF, it feels contemporary with very clever use of tactile materials. The dash looks more like a piece of expensive furniture than the usual plastic mouldings we have got used to. If there is one criticism, it is that the styling has slightly com-

promised the rear accommodation. It is not bad, but it feels a little cramped compared with the competition. Whilst styling is always subjective and largely emotional there are few who would argue that this car when seen on the road gives off and aura of class that its ubiquitous competition simply lacks. There is real road presence here that is way and above what is expected at this price level. The XFR costs nearly £60,000. That is a lot of money for a saloon car, but next the BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 at nearer £70,000 it begins to look like a bargain. Try and find a 500 PS car for less!

Jaguar, despite all the odds have really produced what is in effect all the car you could ever need or want in the real world. It has succeeded in making you feel “I want one” with this car. It would be an emotive purchase, but in the cold light of day you could justify it because of its awesome ability, quality and value. Ironically Sir William Lyons, who founded Jaguar was a self confessed “car nut.” Ratan Tata who heads Tata Motors and therefore Jaguar is every inch from the same mould. On this form a return to the glory days cannot be far off.

SOCIAL ISSUES

INTRODUCING

Imogen Redcroft Dear Readers I am very pleased to introduce myself my name is Imogen Redcroft, and 3SIXTY has asked me to be their Counsellor for their new personal advice column. This column will appear in each issue of 3SIXTY, will offer helpful advice to our readers, who may benefit from an independent source of professional advice on matters concerning personal relationships, personal development, personal problems, difficult personal situations etc. I am an experienced counsellor who uses a humanistic approach to help solve issues around personal emotional and psychological development. Nowadays there is considerable pressure on individuals and on their relationships. Expectations of happiness and success are much higher than in previous generations, as modern society tries to become more open, free, tolerant and accepting of emotional development and sexual orientation. With this come more opportunities for success and happiness, but it also presents many people with more complex relationships, and keeping these relationships going in a successful way can seem at times quite challenging and even very stressful. These challenges in my experience often resolve around one’s personal emotional development. All feelings have their upside and down sides, and everyday living will ensure we experience both the ups and downs. However if the downs become dominant in one’s life or are ‘digging you in’ then it is often helpful to seek out another view or perspective on the issues one is facing. We all want to be happy, successful, experience a good optimistic outlook on life, and be satisfied and at ease in our relation3SIXTY SOCIAL ISSUES

ships. However sometimes we are alarmed, afraid, nervous, tense, anxious, angry, frustrated and annoyed, even depressed at times with what is happening in our lives. This can make us miserable, sad, and gloomy and not fun to be around. Then boredom and tiredness can set in. My column will aim to offer support and advice that is practical, realistic and deals with the personal problems of living. In personal development, it is often useful to consider getting to grips with what is often called ‘one’s inner self’; so feelings of self-esteem, inde-

pendence, and self-regard in general are important. In relationships with others, feelings of empathy, assertiveness and how one gets along with others are really important emotional areas. Then in the hurly-burly of everyday living, it is dealing with stress and how much one is in control of it that is really important, and also how much in touch with reality – what is out there- and how good a problem solver one is. In general it is very helpful if one is optimistic when faced with the difficulties life throws at us. In my experience, the importance of emotional development cannot be over-emphasised, and this area has seen an explosion of research and great public interest over the last 20 years; particularly with Daniel Goleman’s book on Emotional Intelligence, in the best-sellers lists for a long time.

My own values as a Counsellor are humanistic; by that I mean I respect all diversity of belief, lifestyles and sexual orientation, and this allows for a broader appreciation of life and that people find success and happiness in all sorts of ways. I respect confidentiality and the right of each person to follow their own path in life, regardless of religious belief or nonbelief, ethnic origin or social context. I embrace these values with the proviso that those who are offered respect and tolerance for their choices in life have to offer the same respect and tolerance to all others, providing of course that these choices do not arm or injure others in any way. I can only offer advice on personal issues and development through this 3SIXTY column, and will only accept requests for advice through a valid email address which includes the full name of the person and location. Advice will be published in my column and I will only use the first name of the person. My advice will be set out as an answer to particular problems sent to me by email. I hope that this 3SIXTY service will prove to be helpful to our readers. As with all free advice columns a disclaimer applies and this is set out below. I look forward to receiving your emails. imogen@3sixtymagazine.com Kindest regards Imogen Redcroft Disclaimer; information and advice given in this 3SIXTTY column is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or mental health advice or treatment for specific medical or psychological conditions. SOCIAL ISSUES INTRODUCING

KITT WYNKOPP

What’s Love got to do with it? (I can’t help but hear Tina Turner’s voice as I type these words.) It’s ALL about Love. Every single thing we do is about Love and our journey to experiencing it in every waking moment. We look for it through a job, or boyfriend, or hobby. We’re even looking for it while we busy ourselves with things to do. It doesn’t matter whether we’re conscious of the journey or not; whether we’re deliberate or distracted; whether happy or cranky; Love is still the goal. Love exists everywhere in all directions all at the same time. Love is in every moment, the light and the dark. In fact, the only thing that exists is Love. If Love is the only thing that exists, how do we come to think or feel we don’t have it in our lives? The answer is likely that we’ve forgotten we are the source of it. Every physical cell and every organism constitutes a point of consciousness of Love. Love emanates from every cell and organism. You are the source of Love in your life. I am the source of Love in my life. We are each the sources of Love in our lives. Together,

we create a community of Love. How do we experience or feel the Love that we are in every moment? One way to begin to feel the Love within us is by recalling loving memories. Other ways to re-acquaint us with the feelings of Love include immersing ourselves in things that appear to make us feel good: walking in nature, hugging a child or pet, an enjoyable job, a boyfriend, a hobby, or even busying ourselves with lots of things to do.

49

we each are, we must look at if and how we are resisting it. Life is about our relationship with ourselves. When are we loving ourselves and when are we not? When are we loving others and when are we not? There is no separation.

“As we make our way back home to Love, we reconnect” T h e s e things can kick-start the feelings of Love within us. They can re-familiarize us with how Love feels, no matter what may be associated with It.

For some people, t h e s e things keep them connected to Love. For others, it takes meditation (in any of its various forms: yoga, being still, ironing, creative expression...) How you connect with Love depends, I suppose, on where you are on the path back to It. There is no good or bad nor is there any competition - we are all on the same path going in the same direction all at our own pace.

What we identify as lacking in others is what we identify as lacking in ourselves. What we identify as the best in others is what we identify is the best in ourselves. We need go no further to know what we think about ourselves than by becoming aware of what we think about others around us - particularly those we love in special ways. “There is no relationship of greater importance to achieve than the relationship between you, in your physical body, right here and now, and the Soul/ Source/God (Love) from which you have come. If you tend to that relationship, first and foremost, you will then, and only then, have the stable footing to proceed into other relationships. Your relationship with your own body; your relationship with money; your relationship with your parents, children, grandchildren, the people you work with, your government, your world . . . will all fall swiftly and easily into alignment once you tend to this fundamental, primary relationship first.” – Abraham As we make our way back home to Love, we reconnect our awareness of each other as a community; a community that expands the experience of who we are. What better way to bring Wellbeing to our world?

There is a frequent misconception that the legal system automatically provides some form of protection should a relationship breakdown and the parties are living together; this is simply not true. There is more protection for a couple who have been in a civil partnership for two years than a couple who have cohabited for twenty years or more. Parliament is currently looking to address this imbalance. Couples who live together for more than two years will be able to make financial settlement agreements, claim maintenance from each other and have a legitimate expectation to be provided for in their partner’s Will. Couples can however elect to not be covered by this legislation. The bill is still with the House of Lords at the moment, but will start in Scotland in 2010 first before being implemented in England and Wales. To protect yourselves at this stage parties should have a deed of trust regarding the home they reside in and a pre-civil partnership agreement to govern their assets.

In short, yes. However, unlike with marriage (where it does not matter which country you get married in) the country you register it must legally recognise civil partnerships and your legal capacity i.e the minimum age of consent may vary and the UK will respect the foreign jurisdiction’s decision on this and not our own laws.

Jude Law –

An interesting one to watch for the next six to twelve months, this one! Mr Law will start to show signs of strain, and in his reading it shows an accident, injury or even a bout of ill health! He seems to be moving in very different circles socially which should begin to help make him a bit more interesting in the personality department, as he usually comes across as hot but very boring, he will begin to have the freedom to pursue some long awaited interests that he has put on the back burner, I also see a gay friend getting closer, maybe in a business sense? The other drama I see is in the love category, a little bit of heart break is on the cards, leaving him a bit dishevelled, on the matter of heart break someone close is about to make an exit from his life, as an actor he will continue to be successful an I see a British made film being a great move for him. A new child or baby will be arriving in his already hectic lifestyle too, Jude’s crystal is a ‘Moss Agate’ to keep him creative and rolling through life this will also help with addictions and change, His Aura is very ‘Grey’ showing him being in between two worlds a little bit lost and moody!

57

Judi DenchNicole Kidman-

For some reason this Aussie beauties’ reading is screaming babies and motherhood! She loves home life and being around children and being as normal a person she can be, something is still missing though, it feels she needs to speak about a few important things on her mind, but who can she trust? I’m seeing her being offered a project that will show us what a great comedy actress she is, and also I see a lot of animals around her, She must enjoy any spare time she has because yet again she will become very much in demand again, taking her back to her Australian Motherland! A friend let’s her down but i feel she already can see what’s going to happen as she is very spiritual and into her intuition already, this comes from her grandmother’s side of the family, she would make a great ‘White Witch’! Nicole’s crystal is a‘Carnelian’showing passion, help to be organised, nurturing in mind body and motherhood too, Her aura appears very ‘Pink’, showing a lot of soothing, craving, loads of love to give and making a difference.

Judi is about to make a big old decision, and I see her being really affected by this, she is going to be pulling cherished friends close to confide in, whatever her decision it will be absolutely fine, I want her to pay attention to her back area and heart, on the matter of the heart ,some kind of love is about to be rekindled , she is a passionate women , if you know what i mean, this is the secret to looking so fabulous all the time! New Orleans comes up in her reading and also playing a character far from anything she has played before, i see her with a paint brush in hand and relaxing next to some beautiful water, re- energising her for what lies ahead, she certainly enjoys the fruits of her labour but she is grounded and earthy also, she can make a good garden grow! I do urge her to go easy though, I’m not going to bring age into this, (women’s prerogative) but she is one of our treasured actress and we want to keep her for a lot longer! Judi’s crystal is ‘Amber’, showing maturity, knowledge, a sense of vibrancy youth and memory, Her aura is ‘Purple’ showing wisdom, healing, peace and female energy!

liverpoolscene 79 MISS WHIPLASH GOSSIP In Liverpool the buzz is around town of a new book that’s been written about the Gay Quarter, it includes the history of the area and makes for a really good read. The book is available via Amazon UK but was sold out when I tried to find it, however I was nudged in the direction of Amazon Germany who have it in stock for about 9€ which is just over £40 its expensive for a book, but if your interested in a bit of pink history its really worth a read, and looks really intellectual if you leave it on your coffee table with your Tom of Finland books.

at RB’s on Northgate Street with Lady Wanda Why, as with I-candy make sure you have a Wednesday off (did you know Dame Shirley Bassey doesn’t work Wednesdays at all, lucky bugger) or you have an understanding boss as the night is filled with high energy tunes and camp antics. On Saturday nights in Chester you have the either Penni Tration, Betty Sparkle or Delores the girls take it in turn to provide your entertainment which I think is very civil of them, if it was me I would work every Saturday, after all its every man and his dog in this world....

The Liverpool Gay Quarter that’s Liverpool’s gay village now has a new website too, its a completely independent website www.LiverpoolGayquarter.com <http://www. LiverpoolGayquarter.com> and its sister website www.LiverpoolGayscene.com <http://www.LiverpoolGayscene.com> its a low-down of what’s going on in Liverpool, they have roped me in to provide a witty response on their take on things. Being completely independent of any of the venues also means they can tell you the truth – a novel thing sometimes in these situations about the place, you can also comment on the articles and venues so you get a firsthand experience of the place.

If your up for a midweek blast get yourself down to Gender Blender

Meanwhile over in Chester – we really have been ladies about town this month. The little quaint town or is it a city? I think its a city because it has city walls, anyway I get distracted so easily. The city really has a thriving gay nightlife. Down at the Liverpool Arms or the LA as the locals know it there is always some shenanigans going on, with entertainment all through the weekend with Betty Sparkles herself on a Friday kick-starting your weekend. You can join Betty again n Sunday down at bar 6t9 where she will play you a soft mix of upbeat and energetic tunes to finish off your weekend; she really is like a diamante covered bookend of your weekend.

MISS WHIPLASH GOSSIP COLUMN This month has been a bit of a busy one with openings and things going on in the world. Both Bobbie Dazzler and myself have been out and about finding out what’s going on so that I can let you know! First things first we popped to AXM in Southport at the start of the month for the opening of their new glamorous bar. The club is based on Coronation Walk . The opening night was a very swish affair with red carpet and some drinks promotions that they have promised me will be staying around for some time the buy one get one free on ALL drinks yes you heard me all drinks. The wonderful event was organised by Hayden

Manchesterscene 83 the manager and his glamour puss entertainer Miss Penny Crayon with the music provided by none other then Paul, (ex Poptastic fame) with his cheeky whit and electric range of music the place is sure to do well. Further up Coronation Walk is The Crown, the place has gone through a number of changes in the last couple of months and as I write this the place has now closed, but I am rightfully informed that the venue should re-open the in this month with a new look, new management and new entertainment so pop on down and see what’s going on. We will be popping in at some point to say hello to the new owners and we wish them the best of luck. Another night out and another venue – we popped in to see our friends in Chesterfield, DJ Dan Lisa and Ethel Shagnasty. Wednesday nights in Chesterfield haven’t been the same since they stared I-Candy The night has quickly become the busiest midweek gay night in the midlands. The night kicks off at Escapade at 10pm till 2am. However if you want to start the night earlier with a bit of camp fun you can meet the whole team from about 8 down at Nickels where there is always camp bingo or cabaret or free shooters going on, the whole thing is one debauched night out, just make sure you book the Thursday off work or have an understanding boss, because when Ethel gets hold of you she makes you drink those shooters like they were going out of fashion.

3SIXTY FROM LONDON

Pool heads in the ball GFC Bournemouth V Bandits

FROM YORKSHIRE Yorkshire Terriers V Nottingham Ballbois A 0-0 draw was played out on a very frosty Temple Newsam pitch betweenthe Terriers and Nottingham Ballbois. The Terriers had most of the play without creating many clear cut chances. The closest they came to a goal being a thunderous shot off the post from Ian (Freddie) James in the second half. Terriers defender Jon Frost was sent off mid way through the second half with a straight red card for an innocuous looking challenge. Despite being down to 10 men it still looked like the Terriers were the more likely team to make a break through. Alas, no goals came. YORKSHIRE 5-ASIDE Yorkshire welcomes all the LGBT Football Clubs from across the country for their annual 5-aside competition, which takes place on the weekend of March 13th and 14th. Each club can enter a maximum of 3 teams. The competition draw will take place on Saturday 13th at Mission 2 in Leeds. As in previous years, the tournament will be held at South Leeds Stadium’s 5-aside Pens on Sunday 14th, from 11.30am to 4pm; followed by a buffet and presentation of the Viaduct Cup at the The Viaduct, Leeds from 5pm. Any teams that wish to enter, the deadline is Monday 8th March chrisplatt1@hotmail.co.uk Chris Platt, Secretary Yorkshire Terriers FC. Manchester boys

Leicester Wildecats travelled to Old Deer Park on Sunday 31st January to take on their old rivals London Falcons. The Wildecats started at a slow pace conceding an own goal by captain Gary Newitt in the first couple ofminutes, then contributed to their uphill task by awarding the Falcons a penalty which was missed. The score remained the same at the change round but then the Wildcats yielded another penalty which was duly converted by Falcon’s Tony Kerr. The game came to life midway through the second half as Neil Ward pulled a goal back after a direct run from the halfway line, but, as the Wildecats thought they were going to get something from the game Ian Kehoe struck a fine shot to restore the Falcon’s two goal lead. Wayne Carter then scored for the Wildecats to make it 3 - 2 but later on the Falcons scored again to cement their win and claim justified revenge. The London Falcons GFC maintained their place at the top of the GFSN league table with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Leicester Wildecats. The Richmond-based club recorded their 6th win out of 6 in the league.

FROM BRIGHTON Brighton Bandits V GFC Bournemouth GFC Bournemouth came out on top in the South Coast Derby with a hard fought 6-2 victory over Brighton Bandits. The game was played on an extremely muddy surface, giving both teams the same difficulties with movement and touch. The result maintains Bournemouth’s 100% record this season and chasing the Falcons 3 points lead on the table with a game in hand. After an end-to-end start GFC took the lead at 8 minutes when a ball played over the top caught Brighton out and big Danny Williams finished calmly. It was 2-0 just a few minutes later when George Poole rammed home a loose ball in the box. Brighton came back into the match briefly, a fantastic strike from distance hitting the bar and the rebound calmly finished off by their striker to reduce the deficit to one. The pitch was making life difficult for both teams but GFC extended their lead to 3-1 at half time when Williams twisted and turned and finished from 18 yards. Half time was a welcome respite but soon we kicked off back in the mud and GFC sealed the match up with three second-half goals. Danny Smith converted on the six yard box and Wayne Barlow scored the goal of the day from 25 yards on the angle, his looped shot sailing into the corner. It was left to Williams to complete his hat trick with a smart finish before Brighton notched another consolation, a fine individual effort from midfield.

SPORTS The Beacon Half Marathon

THE BEACON HALF MARATHON

London Leftfooters

HOCKEY & FOOTBALL TEAMS MEET IN FOCKBALL The London Royal Hockey Club and Leftfooters FC took each other on in the other’s sport last Saturday in Hurlingham Park, South West London with expected results. The game was played in good spirit with £200 raised for Cancer Research UK. Both teams arrived looking at the others sporting equipment with suspicion and horror. After a quick run through of hockey the first half began with Leftfooters FC trying to play hockey. What resulted was a 7-0 victory for the London Royals and much humour with the football players attempting to swing at the small round ball in vain as London Royals swarmed the goal. Thankfully the Leftfooters half time arrived and the nightmare could then begin for the London Royals. After a quick run through of the rules with some relaxing of aforementioned rules Leftfooters provided a similar lesson in their own sport winning 9-1. Credit must go to The London Royals for getting a goal when the Leftfooters forgot their own sports rules regarding a back pass to the goalie from which the hockey team scored. At the end of the game both teams shook hands and tried to work out whether to add the score together to make a ridiculous 9-8 score line or just accept that everyone was a winner at their own sport Oli Daly, Leftfooters Manager said ‘the game between ourselves and the London Royals demonstrated one thing and one thing only other people’s sports are best left alone!’ but added ‘it was a fun day and was definitely a worthwhile experience’. Matt Hill from the London Royals said “The score is less relevant than the fantastic £200 which we raised for such a worthy cause.....although technically I think the Royals demonstrated better all-round skills and we demand a rematch!!

Despite the terrible weather on Sunday the annual half marathon organised by the Sussex Beacon was a resounding success, with thousands of pounds being raised by the 6,190 runners that took part. The competitors set out from a wet and windy Madeira Drive on a course that took them 13.01 miles through the streets of Brighton and Hove and finishing back in Madeira Drive. First across the line was David Wardle from Woodford Green in a time of 1:06:59. Local girl Fiona Powell was the winner in the ladies category with a time of 1:23:47. Competitor Ron Whittaker from Brighton said “It was a great race for a fantastic local cause. I ran a personal best of 145 minutes”. Another personal best was clocked up by local man David Reedman finishing in a time of 137 minutes. The Sussex Beacon is a charity based in Brighton providing support to local people living with HIV/AIDS. As well as counselling and day to day assistance the Beacon has a residential care home in Bevendean Road, Brighton.
