IT’S CRUNCH TIME for British businesses and organisations as they wait to see if they’ve made it onto Stonewall’s annual Top 100 Employers Index for 2009. The chart, published on Wednesday 7 January, is essential reading for every working or job-seeking gay person in the country as it details the companies most committed to providing a truly equal workplace. Last year’s winner was Nacro, the national crime reduction charity, and there were top ten berths for the Greater London Authority, Transport for London and Brighton and Hove City Council. All will be fighting to keep their places in the upper echelons of the index, as Stonewall’s Direc-

tor of Workplace Programmes, David Shields, explains: “Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers 2009 had more entries than ever before – with 317 employers taking part, up on 241 last year. It also included the largest ever survey of gay staff in the workplace with almost 7,000 participants.” Ahead of the official results, Stonewall has revealed that inclusion on the countdown has a good effect on gay workers. “The survey found that the higher an employer ranked in the index, the more satisfied their staff reported being,” says Shields. “This highlights the positive impact employers can have through Stonewall’s index on staff experience and productivity as a result.”

Malone, who’s married with kids, was convicted of the killing at the Old Bailey in November after he failed to convince a jury that he didn’t stab Akers in a fit of anti-gay rage. Sentencing Malone to life, Judge David Paget said: “You murdered him in a particularly savage way, stabbing him in the back with a carving knife with such force that it completely severed the eighth rib and punctured his right lung. You did this simply because he was gay.” The judge also told Malone: “I am satisfied that you took that knife and went into those public lavatories looking for someone you thought was gay to stab. You clearly have an unhealthy interest in knives and very clearly have a hatred of homosexuals. You will have to be regarded, therefore, as posing a significant risk of serious harm to members of the public, in particular gay men, in the future.” It emerged during the trial that

Kilroy-Silk: not signed up

Europe is among those supporting an EU Parliament initiative to grant equal rights to gay couples across all member states. At the moment, British gay couples who are legally partnered can’t claim the same rights in fourteen EU states, among them Ireland, Germany, Greece and France. For example, French couples who have a same-sex marriage are recognised in the UK but the reverse is not true of British gay civil partnerships in France. It’s this type of discrepancy that the initiative hopes to solve, but it will require the co-operation of all twenty-seven EU states. Many high-profile British MEPs have so far failed to support the resolution. Yet to give his backing to the initiative is former I’m A Celebrity contestant Robert Kilroy-Silk, along-

side Tories Timothy Kirkhope and Ian Hudghton and Labour MEP’s Mary Honeyball and Peter Skinner. A successful resolution needs the backing of 50% of MEPs, but at the moment only 10% have signed up. Tom Wise, an MEP for the UK Independence Party, has already signalled his intention not to get involved. “I have no wish to interfere with the internal procedures of other countries,” he told a constituent. “Perhaps we all should respect local customs and laws, rather than imposing our views on our hosts.” The fate of the declaration will be decided on Thur 15 Jan 2009. Campaigners in favour of the motion have until then to secure the necessary 393 signatures for it to have any hope of being adopted by the European Parliament.

AMERICAN GAY rights groups have welcomed the appointment of Nancy Sutley to Barack Obama’s Environmental team. She is the first prominent gay figure to make it into the new President’s administration. Chuck Wolfe of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund called the news “another step toward full equality for gay Americans.” Hopes are high among campaigners that another gay politician, Mary Beth Maxwell, will be named for the highprofile post of Labour Secretary. WILD DEAL BAR OWNER NOT GUILTY

THE OWNER of the White Horse pub, Simon Thompson (standing, centre) preparing to celebrate with friends after being cleared of assaulting another bar owner at the Hilton Metropole in March. Police were called after an incident at The Golden Handbags, an event devised by the local gay magazine GScene to give awards to gay bars and clubs. Mr Thompson was charged with assaulting Sharon Barr, the owner of The Zone and accused of assaulting her bar manager and one of her barmen. A further public order charge was brought against him for allegedly shouting abuse at Ms Barr, outside her venue on St James’s Street. After a four day trial, one assault charge was dropped and Mr Thompson was found not guilty of the rest by three Brighton magistrates. The Chair of the bench Neil Rose told Mr Thompson: “You can leave here without a stain on your character.” See page two for a court digest

Lucrative 2009 bar contract awarded to Brighton’s Wild Fruit THE COMPANY BEHIND Brighton’s well know club brand Wild Fruit has won a three year deal to run all of the bars at Brighton Pride in Preston Park The news comes after the shock revelations that Stagfleet, which owns Club Revenge, was told by Pride that it wasn’t financially up to scratch despite offering a hundred thousand pound bond. Stagfleet and Wild Fruit had run the bars together for the last three years. “As a local gay business and staunch long term supporter and fundraiser for Pride we are thrilled that Pride have granted the bars to us subject to contract,” said Paul Kemp, of Aeon Events which runs Wild Fruit. Pride trustees have defended their tender process as a “rigorous” and “open” after criticism

from Stagfleet which had co-tendered with Aeon Events. “Once we (Aeon Events) had met the criteria, we were advised (by Pride) that it would be fair and more flexible of us to submit several options for Pride to consider,” said Paul Kemp. “Running the bars at Pride is an enormous undertaking and until contracts have been signed we can’t comment on specific details.” Kemp’s company will operate the Wild Fruit bar but it has the option to sublet others like the cabaret and members bar. Anyone can apply but it will be Pride which will decide in order to be: “inclusive and to encourage other local businesses to operate on the park and be involved in Pride as in previous years,” according to Aeon Events.

LGBT GREENS are calling on gay Brightonians to help prevent the British National Party gaining a foothold in the city. A planned BNP meeting earlier this month was scuppered by more than 300 protesters. “We are proud to have joined the successful protest,” said Phelim MacCafferty of the Greens. “We call upon every LGBT person in Brighton and Hove to have as their first New Year’s resolution continued opposition to the fascists.”

A NEW EXTREME sports event could attract up to 50,000 visitors to Brighton next year. White Air is the biggest land and sea-based extreme sports festival in Europe, and features the Red Arrows among its attractions. The new album, I Never Thought This Day Would Come, is an absolute wonder to behold. Deliberately trying to push himself, Wilson has invited many co-writers to challenge his more than ample abilities. Kayleigh’s Choice: The Bobby McGee’s THE BOBBY MCGEE’S are flowers taken out of the fields of their usual context - delicate petals pinned cleverly; brilliantly arranged; soft against gruff. No Friends - a musical worm farm - is sweet, simple, and wild, and when I saw Genki Sudo live I reached some phenomenological ecstasy replete with butterfly hand-motions. THE BRIGHTON Philharmonic Orchestra present an icon of classical music on Sun 18 Jan, performing Beethoven’s 5th and 6th symphonies. Two hundred years since they were premiered, these masterpieces have lost none of their ability to inspire and amaze audiences. Between the symphonies, the BPO are joined by soprano Elizabeth Atherton for the dramatic and engaging aria Ah! Perfido, the lament of an abandoned woman. See the website for details.

IT’S BEEN a funny old career for Mandy Patinkin. Possibly the only celebrity to straddle the worlds of musical theatre and television crime (via Criminal Minds), he has the rare distinction of being outstanding in two fields. Appearing at the Duke of York Theatre from Thur 8 Jan to Sun 18 Jan, these shows see the man and his rich, quivering voice deliver standards from Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Randy Newman.

THIS MAKES it onto the music page by virtue of the subject matter - Michael Jackson. In the absence of any new material from the deposed King of Pop, fans will no doubt flock to this latest back-catalogue musical. Starring various Michael soundalikes and, er, Denise from Five Star, Thriller: A Musical Celebration opens at London’s Lyric Theatre on Thur 2 Jan. We’ll be charitable and say it’s going to run for slightly longer than the Boney M one did.

CABARET HAS a knack of making stars - Liza Minnelli was propelled to mega-stardom in the 1972 movie version, and the 1998 Broadway revival launched Alan Cumming’s Hollywood career. Now it’s I’d Do Anything runner-up Samantha Barks’s turn, and she makes for a fantastic Sally Bowles opposite Wayne Sleep’s light-footed, hot-shoe-shuffling Emcee. Cabaret plays at the Theatre Royal Brighton from Tues 13 Jan to Sat 17 Jan.

NOT CONTENT with his day job fronting Antony and the Johnsons, Antony Hegarty is launching an exhibition of his very personal art at London’s Isis Gallery this month. Described as ‘little spells’, Antony’s drawings have an almost tortured genesis, with each piece drawn on, burned, soaked in the rain, thrown away and reclaimed, drawn on again, stained or dried over a fire. Likely to provoke as much debate as his other-worldly music, and well worth seeing.

CHEEK2CHEEK ARE holding a Sparkling New Year Ball for lesbian and gay revellers and their friends on Sat 10 January at the Old Market in Hove. NEVER IN the history of light entertainment has one man been so convinced of his right to stardom, and yet with so little cause. David Gest, for who else could it be, has now decided that his life is worthy of transformation into a musical extravaganza - normally an honour reserved for slightly more famous people, like Jesus. We’re not exactly recommending Nuts: My Life as a Musical, but until Kerry Katona mounts a one-woman production of La Boheme, you’re unlikely to witness a bigger celebrity car-crash than this. Any show that combines Peter Andre, Coolio and Bonnie Tyler in the same performance just has to be worth seeing, and there’s always the chance that Liza will be in the gods with a stun gun....

Coming attractions Brighton’s winter theatre season will see you through the cold, dark nights IT MAY BE winter, but hibernation is most definitely not an option in Brighton - culturally speaking there’s more than enough going on to keep us all well-nourished. The Theatre Royal has a great season coming up, with an eclectic programme of shows that provide something for everyone. Late January sees the ever-popular Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat take up residence, February brings a new production of Little Shop of Horrors, while March sees the eagerly awaited Waiting For Godot, starring Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. The West End hit comedy Boeing Boeing touches down in April, stand-up comes from Ed Byrne and Stephen K Amos, and the Russian State Ballet return in February with Swan Lake. The Brighton Dome has an equally thrilling programme this winter, with one of the highlights being Brighton’s now traditional ‘alternative’ pantomime. This February it’s Sinderfella, starring David Raven as the Fairy Godmother, Dave Lynn and Pat Cruise as the Ugly Sisters and Miss Jason as Sinderfella herself! Other highlights include comedy from Rob Brydon in February, Al Murray and Ross Noble, both in March, and the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra with a series of concerts in February and March. There’s also a great line-up of music at the Dome, including Sharleen Spiteri, the NME Awards Tour, Ray Lamontagne and Elbow. YOU KNOW when you go to the supermarket and buy an own brand version of, say, Hob Nobs? Then when you get home and dunk one in a cup of tea you suddenly realise the magnitude of your mistake? You do? Good. You are therefore well prepared for the return of Dancing on Ice, ITV1’s answer to Strictly Come Dancing, and as you’d expect from the People’s Channel, it’s a load of old bobbins, with little or no nutritional value or educational relevance. But wait! If we think of this as credit crunch television it begins to make a strange sort of sense...only the cheapest cut of celebrities are used, and while Pip Schofield’s time probably costs a bob or two, I imagine Holly Willoughby works for food and maybe lodging. By watching you are quite literally contributing to the economic recovery of our once proud nation, which means you can safely push the boat out and buy proper Hob Nobs after all - hooray!

YOU MAY not remember The Tripods - you really need to be a thirty-something of a certain geeky persuasion to have any lingering memory of it. Suffice to say it was one of the BBC’s attempts to do high concept science fiction on the kind of budget - in the 1980’s - that wouldn’t cover one of Rachel Stevens’ ballgowns today. I smell a remake on the wind though, which probably explains this release, containing the show’s only two seasons (a planned third series was cancelled due to low ratings). In an unspecified near future, monstrous three-legged alien machines have enslaved the human race (wait, come back!) and turned the planet into a peaceful, simpler place. However, a courageous band of freedom fighters are determined to overthrow their extraterrestrial masters and return the earth to its state of war torn decay. I may have that bit mixed up but you get the gist. Anyway, it’s fabulous - go and buy it.

THE LATE MICHAEL Bateman wrote about food for more than forty years, contributing to various publications that included the Daily Mail, the Sunday Express and the Sunday Times. At the time of his death in 2006, he was Food Editor on the Independent on Sunday. This toothsome collection (the articles included were published between the 1960s and the present day) has features on the campaign for real bread and the problems of additives, fascinating profiles of Elizabeth David, Len Deighton and Sophie Grigson, articles on cuisines that were exotic when they were written but which are now taken for granted, and recipes for such delights as stuffed sweet aubergines and paella. Collections of journalism from days long gone can provoke nostalgia in the older reader and sheer incredulity in the younger but writing about food as it was eaten, as it were, is a particularly succulent mirror of our times.

Blood Wedding by P J Brooke P J BROOKE is the pen-name of husband and wife writing team Philip O’Brien and Jane Brooke who - with Blood Wedding - are newly embarked on a police procedural series based in and around the romantic Spanish city of Granada. This substantial (400 page) novel opens with the murder of Leila, a beautiful British Muslim girl who is in Spain to research her thesis on the Spanish Civil War. It transpires that she has discovered previously unknown and highly compromising material relating to the murder in 1936 of the gay playwright and poet Federico Garcia Lorca (the title of the book echoes that of one of his most famous plays). Co-opted into the investigation is Sub Inspector Max Romero, a maverick better working on his own than with a team. He has been a friend to both Leila (for whom he had a yen) and her academic father and feels a strong personal connection to the case. Leila’s murder becomes side-tracked when officials in Madrid decide that a terrorist cell is operating from a Muslim business centre in the village in which the killing took place. And the connections to the death of Lorca continue to echo. Romero finds himself confronted by moral dilemmas both rooted in the historic past and entirely contemporary which have to be satisfactorily resolved before he can move on. His search for truth and resolution provides a compelling narrative.

A CHANGE of tempo and mood from So What, Sober is P!nk at her most deep and meaningful. The lyrics can be interpreted in many ways, and P!nk is always at her best in her more emotional and personal songs. The video is also every gay girl’s fantasy with P!nk snogging another P!nk in a somewhat sexually charged bedroom scene!

I tried to decide ‘My Tune of 2008’, but it was impossible to decide just one! There will also be live shows and acts throughout the night to help keep that NYE hangover at bay.

THE LAST ever Discotec was a special World Aids Day fundraiser, with half the door money going to charity. DJs included Guy Williams and Lee Harris in the main room, with r’n’b in room two. £700 was raised for the Terrence Higgins Trust. I’m very sad to see the back of the Discotec brand, which put on one of the hottest weekly midweek parties for many years!

First pets in cyberspace A new website for pet owners is taking the online world by storm since its launch in October last year. ThePet.Net is a free site which allows passionate pet owners to connect with each other to share and rate their own experiences of pet-friendly hotels, shops and services, and to ultimately find the best their pet can get. Bringing together pet owners from around the world, it’s like Facebook for animals, only without the perpetual status updates! The brainchild of Brighton vet Marc Abraham and online media expert Andrew Seel, ThePet.Net is also providing a lifeline to animal lovers as the recession begins to bite. “Why should your pet suffer because of the credit crunch?” says Abraham. “At last there’s a free online service where owners can search, list and evaluate pet-friendly businesses that pride themselves on putting

GREAT WALKS of London and Brighton Holland Park, Kensington

Ditchling Beacon, Brighton

HOLLAND PARK is often considered to be one of London’s most beautiful and romantic open spaces. The park’s combination of wilderness and traditionally laid out gardens make it a favourite with dog-walkers from the area - although more often you’ll see the professionals at work, trailing miniature packs of expensive pooches in their wake. Around half of the park is given over to woodland, and there’s an abundance of wildlife to be enjoyed - most obviously squirrels, but peacocks too. Listen out for their distinctive calls!

DITCHLING BEACON is the third-highest point on the South Downs, and the views from the top are well worth the effort it takes to walk. Stunning at any time of year, but particularly in winter, there are car parks at the summit and the northern base, and a path along the ridge which forms part of the South Downs Way. Nearby you’ll find Blackdog Hill, which is supposedly haunted by a headless black dog - presumably due to the road to the hill’s former use as a ‘coffin road’, carrying the dead to their final resting place. Spooky!

Charlie’s Restaurant of the Year 2008 MOKSHA CAFFÉ celebrated it’s one year birthday recently and what an achievement for young Oli de Trafford and his team! The place was packed for the event – a fitting tribute from all the happy customers and round after round of sumptuous canapés were consumed. This trendy café has progressed in leaps and bounds from a cool sandwich and cake bar to a definitive spot to see and be seen! Moksha Caffé not only produces the best cakes around but also provides the most delectable selection of paninis, melts, quiches, home made soups, speciality teas, coffees and

juices. Every time we come here there is some new culinary delight. Oli’s passion for his food and his business shows throughout. If he is not making more delicious cakes in the kitchen Oli will be seen waiting on tables, chatting to his customers and generally making sure that everything is running smoothly. The mojitos and tapas nights at the weekends are legendary. In addition cool art for sale adorns the walls and nightly entertainment includes Swedish spoken word nights and cabaret! Hats off to Oli and the very cool Moksha Caffé! I must get back to my melon daiquiri. Happy 2009!

THE POPULAR Drakes Hotel in Brighton houses a wonderful restaurant on its lower ground floor. On arrival we were delighted to be greeted by a lovely Australian hostess and a table set with linen, both a rarity these days. Drakes offers a chef’s choice menu with his special starters, mains and a dessert, accompanied with wine, for £55 per head. However, we selected from the menu and were surprised with in-between tasters - a refreshing innovation. The menu offered a small selection of quality starters and mains (and of course dessert) and had a festive appeal to it. For starters I chose the tempura oysters with pickled cucumber and caviar, served warm, and my partner had the chicken and pistachio balantine with spiced brandy apple chutney and sourdough toast. The chef’s presentation showed he takes pride in his food and the tantalising taste of each bite scores him top points. We were then given a taste of the Sussex chestnut soup with Douglas fir foam, served in a tall shot glass - one of the surprise accompaniments given through the evening. For mains, my man is a steak eater and he enjoyed the rib eye;

Charlie’s Kitchen Recipes Oh my God! It’s hard to believe it’s New Year! Where has the year gone? Well after all that turkey, duck and goose at Christmas, I can think of nothing better than a lovely paella for our New Year’s Day lunch! Wishing you all a healthy, happy and prosperous 2009 full of the best!

Charlie’s Easy Paella

INGREDIENTS •300g Paella rice •1 large red onion (roughly chopped) •4 large cloves garlic (crushed) •250g chorizo (roughy chopped) •2 large chicken breasts (finely chopped) •16 king prawns (peeled and cooked) •1500g bag cooked mussels in garlic butter •1 green pepper (de-seeded, roughly chopped) •150g marinated red peppers (chopped) •A good pinch of saffron •1 large tablespoon tomato puree •16 cherry tomatoes •1 bunch fresh oregano •2 tablespoons olive oil •2 450ml packs Knorr liquid chicken stock •1/3 bottle good white wine •Salt and pepper

METHOD In a large frying pan, or even better a paella pan, heat 1/2 a tablespoon of the oil and brown the chicken pieces • Remove from the pan and set aside in a bowl • Return the pan to the heat, add the olive oil • Lower the heat and add the onions and garlic and cook until soft • Turn up to a medium heat and add the tomato puree and saffron • Mix in well and add the chorizo, peppers, tomatoes and the rice and stir for 30 seconds• Add the white wine and cook for 2-3 minutes, then add one packet of the stock• Cover and allow to cook for 15-20 minutes or until the liquid has almost evaporated, stirring occasionally • Add the chicken pieces and the rest of the stock • Meanwhile place the mussels in the garlic butter sauce in a pan, cover and heat for 5 minutes• In another 15-20 minutes as the rest of the liquid has almost evaporated, add the mussels and the sauce and cooked prawns • Remove from the heat and and allow to rest for 2-3 minutes • Add the fresh oregano and a squeeze of lemon TO SERVE • Serve with some of the mussels in their shells on top. I had the roast goose with fondant potato, creamed kale, celeriac puree and sundried cranberries and cassis sauce all of which infused beautifully with the goose. A selection of house baked breads, a delightful bottle of Mclaren Vale Linda Dormas Edigo Shiraz and service with a smile meant we couldn’t possibly leave without having dessert. Chocolate tart with pistachio ice cream and Christmas pudding soufflé rose to the occasion. All this, including the service charge, came in at under £135. One of your New Year’s resolution should definitely be to dine in this wonderful restaraunt.

THE ACTOR, writer and broadcaster Godfrey Winn (1908-1971) was born in Edgbaston, Birmingham and educated at St Christopher’s, Eastbourne and King Edward’s, Birmingham. A pretty child, Winn began his career as a boy-actor (Galsworthy’s Old English, Shaw’s St Joan, Coward’s The Marquise) and made occasional appearances in later life in such films as Very Important Person, The Great St Trinian’s Train Robbery and Up the Chastity Belt. Publication in 1928 of his first novel - Dreams Fade opened up to him the profitable world of freelance journalism. Winn, known to his many detractors as ‘Winifred God’ because of his sanctimonious prose style, became a star columnist on such newspapers as the Daily Mirror and the Sunday Express where he wrote what the novelist Francis King, writing in his autobiography Yesterday Came Suddenly, described as ‘highly lucrative rubbish for an adoring readership of women.’ During World War II he served with distinction as an Ordinary Seaman in the Royal Navy; after the war

he continued to churn out his sentimental but profitable journalism and books. The latter included fiction, essays, books on World War II and travel, risible biographies (The Younger Sister, The Young Queen, The Queen’s Countrywomen) and two volumes of autobiography (The Infirm Glory, The Positive Hour).
