In a hugely successful 2008, gay lifestyle magazine 3SIXTY expanded to become a national title and one80news launched a popular London edition alongside the established Brighton version – now, under the stewardship of new owners, Australian duo Graeme Austin and Tony V, the stage is set to take these two well-loved institutions to new heights. “It was a no-brainer – we liked the titles so much we jumped at the chance to buy them,” says Graeme, who joined the team in May 2008 as Business Development Manager. “Both 3SIXTY and one80news are fantastic reads and they provide a vital source of information for gay people around the country. Tony and myself are proud to be working with such a great team, and together we’ll

continue to make these two titles absolutely indispensible. We’re both loud-mouthed, enthusiastic Aussies, so we’ll be shouting it from the rooftops – one80news and 3SIXTY magazine are here to stay and we’re going to be bigger and better than ever before!” Outgoing publishers David Harvey and David Tuck, who took over 3SIXTY in 2004 and launched one80news in 2007, marked the end of their tenure with words of encouragement for the new owners. “It’s been a great run but we both feel the time is right to move on to pastures new,” said Mr Tuck. “Tony and Graeme will do a fantastic job.”

Last year’s event was one of the most successful yet, with more than 5000 runners taking part from all over the UK and beyond and over £120,000 raised overall, with more than £10,000 going to the Beacon. Organisers hope to beat that total this year. “Times are tight, but year after year we’re amazed by people’s generosity,” says Williams. “I’m sure this year we’ll have another amazing result.” The race begins at 9.45am on Brighton seafront on Sun 22 Feb, although participants are encouraged to arrive at least an hour beforehand. Standard places for the marathon have now run out, but there are still a few charity bond places available. Registration closes on Fri 20 Feb, and no places will be available on the day of the race. THE SELF-STYLED ‘real queen of England’ Jodie Harsh is hosting a special “Fur is a Drag” party during London Fashion Week. Taking place on Fri 20 Feb at Circus in East London, the event is organised by anti-fur campaigners PETA. The event includes a ‘caustic parody’ of a fur runway show starring Ms Harsh, including cross-dressing models sporting fur emblazoned with blood-effect satirical slogans and stains. All the coats on display were donated by PETA supporters, including Mariah Carey and Kim Cattrall. The coat in our picture (left) was worn by Cattrall in the Sex and the City movie. Rainbow ribbon Homophobic spotlights abuse killer faces jail BROKEN RAINBOW, the charity which offers support to LGBT victims of domestic abuse, is launching a brand new ‘rainbow ribbon’ to raise awareness both of the issue and Broken Rainbow’s helpline. The enamel badge will be distributed at a number of upcoming events, including at a project in Soho on Valentine’s day and this month’s LGBT History Ball in Brighton (see page 5). A TEENAGER has been told to expect a jail sentence after admitting to the manslaughter of a 61 year old man in a vicious homophobic attack. Appearing at the Old Bailey, 19 year-old David Smith from Bexley in Kent, pleaded guilty to killing retired lorry driver Ronald Dixon in Chorlton in May 2008. Michael Worsely, QC, prosecuting, told the court the attack happened after Smith, another man and two women taunted, spat on and threw eggs at the victim and his partner as they were walking on a path beneath Smith’s flat. Smith then went outside and punched his victim in the face, smashing his cheek bone and leaving him with head injuries after he fell to the ground. Mr Dixon, who was recovering from a stroke, died from a brain injury shortly afterwards. Common Serjeant of London Judge Brian Barker told Smith, who is out on bail, that “a prison service is inevitable.” He will be sentenced next month.

CHRIS BRYANT, the latest gay member of the government, will taking questions at the next Village Politics event in London. PM Gordon Brown elevated Bryant to Deputy Leader of the House of Commons last year, marking the Rhondda MP’s first governmental post in his eleven years as a Labour politician. The appointment was a remarkable recovery for Bryant, who in 2003 had pictures and messages from his Gaydar profile splashed across the tabloids. A key part of the evening will be a re-enactment of an explosive debate which took place in 1860 at Oxford University before an audience of 700 people. In one corner was “Darwin’s Bulldog” Thomas Henry Huxley, in the other the Reverend Samuel “Soapy Sam” Wilberforce. This battle between science and religion caused, according to one onlooker, “ladies to faint and vicars to commit acts of violence. However, it also led to the general acceptance of Darwin’s ideas about evolution. The play’s author Terry Sanderson, is excited at the prospect of re-enacting this event, saying that although the audience is likely to be more supportive of one side of the debate than the other, “they will be encouraged to cheer and jeer both speakers in equal measure”. The Darwin Day special GALHA takes place in the Library of Conway Hall Humanist Centre, 25 Red Lion Square, Holborn on Fri 13th Feb from 7pm until 9.30pm. There is an admission charge of £10.

Coping with HIV

TRANSPORT FOR LONDON has confirmed it will be rolling out a free bicycle scheme in May 2010. 6000 bikes will be available in zone 1, with 10,000 docking stations around the city. A similar scheme is already running in Paris, where a higher than expected number of thefts has occurred. A spokesperson for TfL said : “We are aware of the issues that they have had in Paris but we are still going to go ahead with the scheme in London. Free bike schemes do have problems but we’re hoping to benefit from the fact we are a second generation scheme.”

HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) is launching a new course to help people with HIV become experts in their own condition. The course is to be held in Eastbourne, and sessions last six weeks starting every Tuesday from 2.00pm - 4.30pm from 24 Feb until 31 Mar. “HIV can have a huge impact on someone’s life,” says Perry French of THT in East Sussex. “This course aims to help people cope with and manage their condition effectively.”

Just thrilled HUMAN rights campaigner Peter Tatchell is pleased as punch with the news that gay social group Just Friends has raised £3412 for his Human Rights Fund at a recent cabaret event. “It was a fabulous, fun cabaret night and I am immensely grateful to all the wonderful, generous artists who performed for free,” said Tatchell. “[The £3412] exceeded the target of £1,000 by more than 300%. Not a penny was taken in expenses by anyone. It will certainly cover the costs of plenty of protest placards for the next few years.”

O2 up for grabs THE LEASE ON London’s iconic o2 arena, which has played host to major acts such as Led Zeppelin and the Spice Girls, is up for sale. Owner Meridian Delta Limited is putting its 999-year lease on the former Millennium Dome in Greenwich on the market, but any sale will not affect the arena’s future as a music and events venue.

Meet ‘n’ greet LOCAL RESIDENTS could soon be welcoming visitors to the city under a new ‘greeters’ scheme. If approved, volunteers would conduct tours around the city, showing off their favourite sights. “This is a city many residents are really passionate about and very proud of,” says Cabinet councillor for culture David Smith. “So it makes sense to capture that enthusiasm to promote tourism and preserve jobs – particularly when we’re facing this serious economic downturn.”

Thugs charged Two men have been charged following an anti-gay and racist attack in West St in Sept 2008. Police have thanked members of the public who helped identify the thugs from pictures. One man has been charged with a homophobic public order offence and assault, and the other with grevious bodily harm and racially aggravated assault. They will appear in court on Fri 20 Feb.

This year’s Schools Out conference took place in Lambeth earlier in February as part of LGBT History Month. Nigel Tart reports from the frontline.

AS LGBT History Month continues, one of the biggest events on the Brighton Calendar is the LGBT History Ball. Presented by the Council’s LGBT Workers’ Forum and domestic abuse charity Broken Rainbow, the Ball is a chance to celebrate gay history in the sumptous surroundings of the Paganini Ballroom in Brighton’s Old Ship Hotel. The ball has a 1940s/50s theme, with entertainment from The Burlettes – think the Andrews Sisters with a devilish twist – eleven piece big band Fats 45, plus jazz from Nicky Mitchell and his band. Novices have no need to worry, as dance lessons kick off at 8pm,

A HUNDRED TEACHERS, young people, policy makers and activists from all across the country braved the weather to attend the Schools Out conference at the Drill Hall theatre in London on Sat 7 Feb. The keynote speaker was Teresa Clark from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, who outlined ways in which the DCSF is currently getting schools to address LGBT issues. She was clear about the need for positive work beyond tackling bullying and urged participants to engage with the department’s consultation on its Single Equality Scheme, which should create a uniform approach to all equalities issues. The conference included the official launch of LGBT History Month, and patrons Sir Ian McKellen and Cyril Nri joined

us. Both gave moving personal accounts of how things have improved for LGBT people during their lifetimes.

In one school, children wrote and performed an opera about the real-life gay penguins in a New

York zoo, who adopted an egg and raised a chick. Parents, governors and even a vicar spoke of the importance of raising the issues positively, before children learnt negative attitudes outside school. Another powerful presentation was from a group of young people from Gay And Lesbian Youth In Calderdale, who mixed stories and statistics from their recent research with music and humour. A personal account of their friend’s experiences of horrific homophobic violence left hardly a dry eye in the house! Other speakers included Louise Davies from lesbian mums’ group Out For Our Children, who showed us their two children’s story books and Philip Wragg, who announced the publication of a new schools resource pack from the Terence Higgins Trust.

As well as an evening of dancing and cocktails, the Ball also sees the presentation of the LGBT History Award, which recognises those people and organisations who make a real difference to the lives of the city’s gay community. “The ball is a part of our ethos of LGBT communities working together,” says Rita Hirani of Broken Rainbow. “It’s only with the self sacrifice of those that have gone before us that allow LGBT people to have the rights we sometimes take for granted. So, yes, it’s a time to celebrate, to remember and to look forward as a community.”

The LGBT History Month event sees him in conversation with Robert Elms, as they discuss Tatchell’s love/hate relationship with the city. A rare chance to get up close and personal with one of the most influential and outspoken figures in modern gay history, this is one conversation well worth eavesdropping on.

WHILE WE’VE never quite gotten over the shock of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, we still have warm and fuzzy feelings for the original movie, which paired Whoopi Goldberg with Dame Maggie Smith, nuns with guns and the sisterhood with some serious soul. It’s slightly sad that Sister Act is replacing The Sound of Music at the Palladium, as we were hoping for an unoffical War of the Nuns in the West End. We’ll never get to see our dreams of silly cast swapping fulfilled now - no Deloris knocking out Nazis while swinging from a high-wire or Maria getting funky with the urban kids of downtown LA - what a shame. There’s still plenty to be excited about - the marvellous Sheila Hancock has been cast in the Mother Superior role, and a year-long global search has seen newcomer Patina Miller cast as Deloris. Sister Act doesn’t make its West End debut until Sat 7 May, but we’re booking our seats now! Altogether: I will follow him, follow him wherever he may goooooo......

Erasure frontman Andy Bell tells Niall McMurray about gayness in pop, recession-busting and fancying women POP, AS everyone knows, is a fickle thing, and the chances of retaining enough affection in the public consciousness to amass even four hits are slim to none at best.

Consider then, electronic duo Erasure. Comprising of Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, since they burst onto the charts in 1986 with Sometimes they’ve built up a collection of singles that’s now enabled them to release Pop! The First 40 Hits. That’s right, forty. What on earth that must feel like? “It feels really nice,” says Andy. “At the time you don’t really notice because you’re working so hard, but when you see all the songs together like that you just think ‘wow’ and feel really fortunate.” Is it also a vindication of electro-pop? “It is - as a genre on its own electronic music doesn’t get enough respect - guitars have always had the upper hand and of course the whole lad culture that goes along with it. But you’d be sur-

prised, most of the top 40 will have synthesisers on it.” Since Erasure’s inception more than a quarter of a century ago, Andy has always been an out, and outspoken, gay pop star. However, it seems gayness in pop was a lot more visible in the eighties than it is today. Why is that? “I think in some ways things seem to be really conservative at the moment - and it seems to be more about body image and less about politics,” explains Andy. “Also because now we have an equal age of consent perhaps people think there’s nothing more to fight for. But there will always be room for it, because there’s always going to be prejudice - though things are much better than they used to be.” Our talk of personal politics

sparks a discussion on the recession. Does he think a spell of belt-tightening will have any positive effects? “I hope so people have become too complacent,” he says. “Worshipping money and material things isn’t the answer to your own personal growth. When it comes down to it, recession does spark creativity because people end up having to make their own entertainment, their own clothes, and in a lot of ways I think that brings the community together.” Erasure, with eighteen top ten hits and five number one albums under its belt, surely has little left to achieve. Is there anything on Andy’s wishlist still to do? “Oh yes,” he tells me. “We’d love to do an album of diva duets. I always aim high, so let’s say Barbra Streisand,

Dolly Parton, Annie Lennox and Debbie Harry. That’ll do to be going on with.” I leave Andy thinking about another set of divas - the Loose Women crew. “Look out for us on there,” he laughs. I fancy ALL of them - Carol, Jane, the lot! I start to fancy them when they get to a certain age...” Andy Bell: heterosexual - will wonders never cease?

THE SATURDAYS continue their rapid ascent to pop stardom by gaining the prestigious Comic Relief single for 2009. Covering Depeche Mode, their version is everything you would expect from the girls: pure unadulterated pop. These girls can do no wrong at the moment, and with singles like this and the surprise success of Issues, it looks like 2009 is going to be their year.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: welcome to the best show on television, bar none. Of course every racy American import has this title thrust upon it these days, and it’s therefore lost its currency a little - but really, consider the competition: Total Wipeout? Demons? Not exactly a packed playing field is it? So, assuming you’ve never seen Mad Men before, here’s the 101: set in the high-flying, chain-smoking, mysoginistic world of an early sixties advertising agency on New York’s Madison Avenue (hence the title), the show depicts America’s development from starched 50s propriety into an altogether more cut-throat permissive society. The superficiality through which this transformation occurs - the peddling of cigarettes and lipstick - is starkly contrasted with the dark forces driving the seemingly chocolate-box lives of the protagonists. Oh, and the clothes are simply stunning. Don’t miss it.

of guide book and memoir which perfectly fits into that particularly French tradition of vagabondage writing, other exponents of which include Francois Villon and Jean Genet and, perhaps, Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. Captured by the Germans in 1940, after making good his escape, Yonnet returned to his native Paris - about which he was clearly obsessed. He collected stories, most especially stories about those inhabitants of the city who dabbled in the occult. Many of the tales Yonnet strings like pearls on his narrative thread could have been contrived by masters of the macabre such as Edgar Allen Poe, Arthur Machen, M R James or E F Benson - but we are led to believe that these disturbing events did take place. Yonnet’s sinister stories are set against a background of wartime Paris and a milieu which marries the criminal with the sexually louche, the sexually outrageous. Here are characters such as Pepe the Pansy - ‘A poof like you wouldn’t have thought possible. He had the audacity to solicit at the entrance of the hotel opposite. On crutches, toothless, outrageously made-up, he sometimes wears a filthy wig and a skirt, with his single trouser leg and his wooden leg with the naked end of his stump showing, extending below it...’ Other denizens of this eccentric world include Dolly-the-Slow-Burner, Keep-on-Dancin’, Mina the Cat and All-by-Myself. Paris Noir is a fascinating excursion into a world, somewhat familiar - but long faded into memory. Vivid and memorable.

CHOOSING TO WAIT over a year for a follow-up single could be seen as a little foolish, but it has been worth it for the second UK offering from September. This track has been out in Europe for well over a year, but has had an 80s retro re-swizzle for the UK market to give us a feel good dancepop track which will hopefully see September dominate the charts yet again.

Legacy of Blood by Michael Ford LEGACY OF BLOOD is the concluding volume of a trilogy clearly aimed at teenagers but which could equally well entertain adult readers. Set in ancient Sparta (from whence we derive the term ‘spartan’), the sequence is built around Lysander, a young slave who accidentally discovers that he is of mixed race, the father he has never known came from the aggressive ruling caste, his beloved mother was a lowly worker on the land. Over the course of the three books, Lysander has grown to know the surviving members of his Spartan family (his strict but honorable grandfather, his impetuous and tom-boyish cousin Kassandra) and forge intense friendships (sometimes borne out of initial emnity) with other youths from the barracks where he lives and trains. There are rituals to be undertaken on the way to becoming a man and there are battles to be fought that will prove him to be a man. There are expected and unexpected enemies to be confronted and there are friendships strengthened and friendships lost in the course of battle. A strong sense of place and sturdily created characters ensure that this trilogy remains a real page-turner from the first volume to the last.

Going back to a more urban sound, they’ve pulled in the one and only Missy Elliot for this hot collaboration. IT’S VALENTINE’S DAY the gay old way at the Queens Arms, with Lillie la France providing a special cabaret performance. And for those of you who are not aware (and why not?) the QA operate a late bar on the weekends til 3am, so you can enjoy the usual camp shenanigans til the early hours. Legally speaking I’m thinking of renting out my flat - what’s the most important thing i need to be aware of? MORE AND MORE homeowners who can’t sell their properties in the current downturn are starting to rent them out to tenants instead, according to new research. There is an array of potential pitfalls to avoid, but the following is a must for any potential new landlord. Sign up to the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) - this is actually a legal requirement,

but a recent survey showed 27% of landlords failed to do so, risking a heavy fine. The scheme is designed to protect a tenant’s deposit in the event of a dispute. If a landlord fails to sign up to a TDS then the tenant can apply for a county court order forcing him to do so. In these circumstances, the landlord may find himself being forced to pay the tenant an amount equal to three times the deposit. New landlords who haven’t already done so should select a suitable scheme as soon as possible. If they keep a tenant’s deposit without registering with an approved scheme they could lose thousands of pounds. IT’S BEEN a while since I visited this delightful little restaurant. What first attracted me was its quirkiness and warmth, the musical and magical tables, hearty menu and big heart and musical talents of owners Jane Bom-Bane and Nick Pynn. Returning the other day it was great to see that not only was Bom-Bane’s surviving the credit crunch but had developed so much. Most Tuesdays evenings are music nights and Wednesdays see the downstairs space converted into a cinema night showing old time favourites, like The Day the Earth Stood Still. Make sure that you book as these nights are very popular! Having just left the gym, my companion and I were very hungry, so we opted for the house speciality of Stoemp (sausage) and mash. Feeling healthy, I ordered the ostrich with Belgian gravy and my companion the Oxford (pork), also with Belgian gravy: both from O’Hagans nothing added range - £7.75 for one sausage and £8.95 for two. As it was a Friday we also ordered two bottles of the Triple Carmelite (Belgian fruit beer) £3.00.

The Stoemp did not disappoint and was truly delicious. The sausages were succulent and juicy and the mash had a selection of vegetables mixed in with it. The gravy was to die for! Other delights on the lunch menu include: rump steak and herb butter ciabatta - £6.95, an anti – pasti plate -£5.95, a daily home –made soup - £3.25 and a grilled goat’s cheese salad with honeyed beetroot - £6.95. Dinner offers a tapas option at £3.50 for one and £6.50 for two, a creamy smoked haddock and mussel chowder, the famous sausages and of course “hot off the grill” waffles with fresh fruit and ice cream - £4.25 as well as a delicious range of cocktails at £5.50 each. It is the home of the Broadway shopping centre and is a town with many great stores but what stood out the most for me was Tom Bell’s Fish and Chips Shop, at 98 Broadway. I was amazed at the queues to get into this place and not just for take away. By the time we arrived we were lucky to get a table. This large chippie, would seat a good 80 –100 people in booth style seatings, and have a great selection of - yes - your everyday battered fish.

Charlie’s Kitchen Recipes Oh my God! The sun is out and the birds are singing – frozen but singing! It’s making me think of sun-drenched beaches, hot bodies and piri piri king prawns. Oh yum!

Piri Piri Prawns INGREDIENTS • 16 large king prawns (shell on) • 1 270g bottle tomato and sundried basil Nandos sauce (available from Waitrose and other large supermarkets) • ½ cup dry white wine • A splash of olive oil • Juice of ½ a lime

METHOD • Peel the prawns and set aside the shells • Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry off the prawns for a minute on each side • Remove from the pan and set aside • Add the shells to the pan and fry off for a minute • Add the wine and lime juice and reduce down to half • Strain the liquid through a sieve to remove the shells • Return the liquid to the pan • Lower the heat and stir in 135g of the Nandos sauce • Stir well and add the prawns for another minute, coating well TO SERVE • Serve immediately with some rice cooked with a little butter and saffron or a large green salad. Healthy, nutritious, delicious! Enjoy!

But what a delight, the huge piece of cod barely fitting on the plate, the texture of the fleshy meat so white and the taste of the batter showed it was cooked in nice clean oil. As we sat there fighting through the pile of chips drinking our sodas, it was also amazing to see that the staff were happy in their jobs, all smiling and laughing; nothing posh, great table service and not a single complaint from a customer.
