QUEER BASH THREAT

Police ‘exceptionally concerned’ at spiralling anti-gay attacks SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS are urging gay people to be extra vigilant following a worrying increase in anti-gay attacks. The Metropolitan Police says it is “exceptionally concerned” about spiralling homophobic violence, which has included the murder of a man and stabbing of two others in the past month alone. ““Homophobia cannot be considered a thing of the past, it’s on the increase,” warns Acting Detective Superintendent Gerry Campbell, of the Metropolitan Police. “We retain a relentless commitment to tackling all forms of violence, homophobic and transphobic hate crime, whilst continually improving our services to victims and potential victims.” Scotland Yard statistics reveal

a 9% rise in homophobic and transphobic offences to 1,372 in the year to April, with nine “critical incidents” recorded since March 2008, compared with just five incidents from 2001 to 2005. Last month, Daryl Phillips, 39, a gay man, was murdered in Tottenham, north London. He had been stabbed in the leg in an apparent homophobia-motivated attack. Earlier in the year, Gerry Edwards, 59, was stabbed to death at his home in south London. In May, police launched at stinging attack on anti-gay hate crime in a bid to stamp out the problem. Codenamed Operation Athena, cops conducted a series of raids on homes across the capital, arresting more than one hundred suspects accused of being driven

by hate to attack gay people. “[Operation Athena] sends out a clear message: violence in any form is unacceptable. We will continue to proactively identify, arrest and seek the prosecution of violent people,” says Campbell. “We now have public protection groups in every London borough, dedicated to proactively investigating a wide range of domestic violence, hate and sexual crimes perpetrated by violent and dangerous offenders.” To cope with the growing problem, the Metropolitan Police Service has recruited 215 dedicated lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender liaison officers working across all of London’s 32 boroughs advising, guiding and supporting police officers and staff in

Trans woman labelled ‘drag queen’ by gossip magazine GOSSIP MAGAZINE CLOSER has been forced to apologise to a trans woman after it called her a ‘drag queen’ in print. The magazine issued a statement saying sorry to Chrisie Edkins following a complaint by her in which she claimed Closer had ‘destroyed’ her life by publishing lies about her. Edkins says she granted Closer an interview focusing on her gender reassignment in order to help others who may be experiencing similar feelings. But she claims magazine made her quotes up, dressed her up to look like a transvestite and referred to her as ‘he’ throughout the article. “Ninety per cent of what they wrote is a load of rubbish,” Edkins told pinknews. co.uk. “If it was a nice story, I wouldn’t mind. All I wanted to do was help other people in my situation. But I didn’t want to be por-

Tony V ‘Tis the season to be gay AS PRIDE SEASON CONTINUES across the UK, it’s a great feeling not only to be proud of whom I am, but also to be the proud owner of a voice for the LGBT community: one80news and 3SIXTY magazine. As you’ve probably noticed, we’re making big changes to enhance both of our titles – 3SIXTY’s June issue is the biggest ever edition (and it’s only going to get bigger and better) and one80news is in gear for some amazing changes over the coming weeks. My partner Graeme, myself, Editor-in-chief

Torsten and the team are working extremely hard to bring you these titles, so we hope you enjoy them! With increasing distribution of all of our publications, WE STAND TALL AND SAY WE ARE HERE QUEER AND HERE TO STAY. I invite you to write to me personally: Tony V, 4 Steine St, Brighton, BN2 1TE. However, we would like to urge any victims of such crimes to come forward and speak with us. We have access to dedicated, specialist care to support you and keep you safe. I want to personally appeal to victims to report these hurtful, sensitive and insidious crimes directly to police or through a third party or non-police reporting site.” Outside of the capital, police are also on alert. “During the summer, homophobic incidents generally rise throughout the UK,” says Nick Antjoule, LGBT Liaison Officer at Sussex Police. “Sussex Police runs an operation each summer to deter hate crime and deal robustly with those involved. This includes increased patrolling in LGBT sensitive areas such as the St James’s Street ‘gay village’ and stepping up investigative resources to bring offenders to justice. This year, we are aiming to intervene early in any problems that may develop. “The increase in critical incidents in London is concerning although I’m glad to say that Brighton isn’t following suit. We did see a rise in incidents at a local public sex environment recently but we were already in a good position through our positive engagement with the men who go there and made several arrests which curtailed anything further”.

trayed as a drag queen or a transvestite.” Closer also reported that Edkins was ‘obsessed’ with former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, and was starving herself to gain a figure similar to hers – something that Edkins refutes. “I didn’t starve myself. I’m not saving up for a sex change. I didn’t say that. I didn’t even say I was taking female hormones to stop my facial hair growing. Hormones don’t make your hair stop growing, they only thin it. I wouldn’t say that. “They photoshopped me to make me look muscly and even lied about my clothes size.” In a statement, Closer magazine’s statement said that they “published the story in good faith and we’re sorry if Chrisie is upset.”

fe\/'e\nj A panoramic view of Revenge’s new roof terrace -in progress - including new staircase. Wooden flooring is going down at the moment

Reaching for the stars How Brighton is building a gay superclub in time for summer Brighton Pier is is one of the landmarks visible from the roof

IF BRIGHTON IS TO ever realise its dream of being the gay capital of the UK, then it needs a full-time gay superclub, and – hallelujah! - the city’s gay scene stalwart club Revenge is putting its money where its mouth is and expanding into the heavens. “Plans for a roof terrace were first discussed three years ago when the smoking ban was initially proposed for England,” says Revenge manager Andy

Roberts, who has been at the club for five years. “We knew that herding customers out onto the pavement to smoke wouldn’t be ideal, and we were right – it’s caused a nuisance to pedestrians and, on occasions, provoked homophobic abuse.” Aside from providing a smoking area, though, it has to be said that it’s a travesty the roof has not been utilised properly before. One trip up there and

you realise how well-placed Revenge is - right opposite Brighton Pier and overlooking the Old Steine Gardens and, of course, the seafront. “This is without a doubt the biggest project Revenge has taken on in a hell of a long time,” Roberts smiles. “But it’s very, very exciting. The addition of the roof terrace will offer all of our customers unparalleled views of the seafront and pier – proper

Brighton landmarks – within the clubbing environment. We’re really excited about it fuelling interest in Brighton’s gay scene and further establishing Revenge as one of the premier gay nightclubs in the south of the UK.” Designing, scheduling, getting planning permission and the dreaded regular Health and Safety inspections have, unsurprisingly, been a challenge, Roberts tells us, and at

a running cost of £250,000, not cheap. Brand new staircases are being built to take you from the top floor corridor to the roof, to bring you back down again, and to provide emergency exits in case of fire. But although proving to be a Grand Designs-style headache, it’s far from dull; plans for the terrace – which measures a whopping 35x35ft - include two huge perspex shields constructed at the sides to protect people from the elements and also keep noise levels outside of the terrace to a minimum. An array of tropical plants are on order; pebbles will cover the floor giving a beach effect; palm trees will be planted; huge umbrellas are being installed that can be erected when it rains; and, (perhaps the jewel in the crown), a Batmanstyle laser light pre-programmed with the Revenge logo will beam branding onto the newly painted roof terrace walls. “People’s perceptions of the scene both in Brighton and elsewhere can become stagnant,” admits Roberts. “We think our new roof terrace will give Brighton a new lease of life for the summer.” Too add even more excitement, it’s clear that the terrace – which is scheduled to open at the beginning of July – is just the start

of Revenge’s transformation. “When the terrace is finished, the entire level two area of the club is also going to be completely refurbished, in time for Pride,” continues Roberts. “The works has made a perfect excuse to do it up as the walls shift during construction. After Brighton Pride, the rest of the club will also be given a new makeover as well. This is only the beginning!”

fe\/'Y`k\j Conman on trial

BNP’s legal risk

A CONMAN WHO allegedly pretended to have cancer to raise money for a round the world trip is on trial for beating his boyfriend to death. Glenn Rycroft, who had worked as British Airways Cabin Crew, is accused of murdering partner Gareth MacDonald, 30, of Prestatyn with a fire extinguisher. The court heard that Rycroft turned on MacDonald after he became suspicious of his boyfriend’s past. It is claimed Rycroft had previously pretended to have cancer in order to raise £200,000 to fund his ‘treatment’, which he then spent on travelling around the world. Rycroft, 33, of Rhewl, Holywell, denies murder. The trial continues.

‘Pregnant man’ is mother again A TRANS MAN WHO hit the headlines last year after becoming the world’s first ‘pregnant man’ has given birth to his second child. Thomas Beatie and his wife Nancy are now the proud parents of a healthy baby boy, who was born three days premature. Beatie gave birth to their first child a year ago. Thomas Beatie is legally identified as a man, but before gender reassignment surgery decided to keep his female reproductive organs.

Elton vs politics GAY ‘ROCKETMAN’ Sir Elton John is criticising politicians as ‘untrustworthy’ and ‘tragic’ over the MPs’ expenses scandal. “It’s tragic when you lose faith in everybody that’s a politician”, he says. “It seems to me there’s nobody you can trust in the British system at the moment and that’s a horrible thing. I’m so disillusioned with politics in Britain.” Last month TV presenter and author Stephen Fry waded into the debate supporting MPs, branding negative claims against them ‘revolting’.

THE BRITISH NATIONAL PARTY could face legal action over its alleged discriminatory views, according to legal experts. Gavin Millar QC, a specialist in election and discrimination law, has told the Guardian newspaper that “An unincorporated association like the BNP which has genuine screening for membership cannot unlawfully discriminate. There will inevitably now be legal challenges to this.” The BNP’s membership guidelines currently states that only ‘indigenous Caucasian’ and defined ethnic groups emanating from that race” are able to join the party. “A black or Jewish candidate who applied and didn’t get the job on grounds of their racial or religious background would have a claim in the employment tribunal,” says Millar.

First gay mayor THE PEOPLE OF S O U T H WA R K , south east London have voted in their first ever openly gay mayor. Councillor Jeff Hook, whose full title will be The Worshipful The Mayor of Southwark, says he took on the challenge of becoming mayor and won. Questioned about his gay mayor status, Mr Hook said: “I’d like a situation where it’s not an issue. A gay person can ride to the top as much as anyone else.” His civil partner, Alvin Foo Onn, will be his official consort.

Gay MP threesome THREE OPENLY GAY MPs are now part of the senior cabinet following Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s emergency reshuffle. Gay MP Ben Bradshaw is now the culture secretary, Lord Peter Mandelson is currently the business secretary and Nick Brown is the chief whip.

A SCHOOL IN KENT has become the centre of a gay row after it taught pupils what being gay means as part of an assembly on bullying. Teachers at Bromstone Primary School reportedly played kids an Elton John song before explaining what same-sex couples are about. However, some parents at the school have said it has left their children afraid to hold hands in case they are accused of being gay. “Young children are exposed at a very early age to homophobic language,” Kent County Council education officer Lynne Miller said in a statement. “Pupils may call each other ‘gay’ without really understanding what it means, but learn that it means something negative, useless, and not positive. “If such usage is not challenged it makes it much more difficult to address homophobic bullying in secondary schools.”

fe\/'interview Chris Green

????????

Tina C

Being Tina C Tina C is on a greatest hits tour, performing her classic hits such as No Dick’s As Hard as my Life, I Became Schizophrenic (So I Could Love You Twice As Much). Just don’t mention the word ‘drag’, says Torsten Højer. Mention drag to Christopher Green when he’s in character as Tina C at your peril. When Christopher becomes Tina, he’s utterly immersed in the world of the trashy bitch from Open Throat Holler, Tennessee. It’s an act a lot of people have a hard time getting their head around - Tina C lives, he tells me; she is a real character, and certainly not a man in woman’s clothing. “One of the first American gigs I ever did was with 3,000 gay men on a cruise out of Florida, which was much too much or me. Some people got Tina, but a lot of people didn’t. The majority were saying things like ‘if she was really that famous she wouldn’t be here now’, or ‘when she first came on I thought that maybe she was a man, now I realise that she’s actually just had a lot of work done’. There is a certain literalism with a lot of American audiences. I let Tina be who she is and don’t crack any ‘I’m a man in a frock’ jokes, which leaves some people scratching their heads. “I’ve got into scrapes before when doing Tina. What I’m doing is using drag as a creative form, but I’m not a drag queen. A lot of people think they know what drag is, and when you deviate from that they don’t get it. That’s why I don’t take Tina to gay venues generally. I’m using drag conventions but not the gay pub drag conventions; more the ‘Barry Humphries (aka Dame Edna) dressing up as a woman’ conventions. Green created Tina C more than a decade ago Tina C as a strong-willed, vehemently patriotic yet unwittingly anti-American character who raises a laff via clever and insighful lyrics and cutting ad libs weaved around song titles such as No Dick’s As Hard as my Life, I Became Schizophrenic (So I Could Love You Twice As Much) and I Thought I Left You (What You Doing Alive?) which have earned her nine-Grammy Awards (in character, of course). Her 2002 show, Tina C’s Twin Towers Tribute, catapulted her into the arena of controversy and established Green as a risktaker to be taken notice of. “Tina is the most perfect vehicle to air views and opinions that I have as Christopher,” he says. “Of course, my stance on subjects isn’t entirely similar to Tina’s, but sometimes they aren’t diametrically opposed to them either. I’m not keen on my characters just being the mouthpiece for my inner views. I like there to be ambiguity. “I used to work in TV and I felt like I had very strong political views which had no outlet whatsoever. When I first became an artist I did performance art, which was a bit like preaching to the converted, as the kind of people who go to the ICA to see contemporary art are left wing. I realised that my natural energy was towards entertainment, and I believe that you can provoke a lot of thought through entertainment rather than standing on your soapbox and shouting”.

It’s the beginning of June, and British actor and performer Christopher Green, creator of white trash country singer Tina C, is on the phone. He’s in a chirpy mood (as is expected of comedians at all times, of course) and, considering he’s just been asked for comment about the death of British female impersonator Danny La Rue from a string of journalists, surprisingly enthusiastic about doing this interview. “Discussing Danny La Rue’s career over the last few days has forced me to answer questions about what ‘drag’ and ‘female impersonation’ really is,” he says. “Danny La Rue was emphatic about not being a labelled a ‘drag queen’ - he wanted to be known as ‘a comic in a frock’. I think drag is one of those words that has roots in the gay subculture but has forced its way into the mainstream. So anyone who sees a man in a dress says ‘oh, you’re a drag queen’. It’s very strange. People like to use that term.”

fe\/'essential arts & leisure Sarah Waters Fella in a Frock SARAH WATERS, author of bestsellers Tipping the Velvet, Affinity, Fingersmith (all adopted for television) and The Night Watch, will be reading from her new novel The Little Stranger at City Books at The Old Market on 15 June at 6:30pm. Set in a rambling Georgian house in rural Warwickshire in a summer immediately post World War II, the book is a chilling ghost story revolving around a mother and her two grownup children, a son grown increasingly strange after being injured in the war and a daughter.

Danny La Rue remembered DANNY LA RUE (born Daniel Carroll in Cork on 26 July 1927) took drag from music hall to popular family entertainment on stage and television during the sixties and seventies but spent the last twenty years in poverty and performing in small venues, though to appreciative audiences. La Rue began his career in the touring all-male variety shows such as Forces in Petticoats which were so popular in the years after World War II. He made a name for himself as a female impersonator at West End nightclubs Churchill’s and Winston’s and eventually opened his own club, Danny’s, in 1964. This venue became one of the most fashionable in ‘Swingin’ London’ and attracted celebrity audiences including Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Margaret. At one point La Rue was the highest paid entertainer in the West End, appearing in revue (Danny La Rue at the Palace ran for over two years), musical (Come Spy With Me) and pantomimes (Queen Passionella and the Sleeping Beauty). He was a regular on television and starred in the film Our Miss Fred.

But La Rue (who was less than candid about his homosexuality) wasn’t entirely happy as a drag performer and thought of himself more a comedian in a frock. ‘I’m just an actor playing a woman,’ he said. ‘My gowns are the tools of the trade … My act is playing a woman, knowing that everybody knows it’s a fella … That’s the point of the joke. If I played a woman’s role from beginning to end, where would Danny La Rue have to go?’ This latter remark may account for the complete failure in 1984 of Hello, Dolly in which La Rue played the matchmaking Dolly Levi. A success in Australia and New Zealand (though he never broke America), La Rue’s star began to fade as his act was increasingly seen as old-fashioned and as his audience aged with him. He was forced back into touring after crooked business managers stole his fortune and for the last twenty years his appearances were limited to small venues and nostalgic television shows. Appointed OBE in 2002, Danny La Rue died from cancer on 31 May, aged eighty-one.

DEATHWATCH AND THE MAIDS, two one-act plays by the French writer Jean Genet, open at Brighton New Venture Theatre on 20 June and run until June 27. Genet (1910-1986) was a poet and novelist (his Queerelle was famously filmed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder), a thief and a convict, a dandy and a revolutionary and a male prostitute who put much of his life into his work. When it was first staged in Pairs in 1949, Deathwatch, about three convicts sharing a prison cell and jockeying for power, was described by one critic (under the headline ‘Unmitigated filth’) as ‘garbage raised to the status of philosophy.’ The Maids, is a play about another power struggle, this time between maids Claire and Solange and their mistress Madame. Both plays, now more than sixty years old and classics of the Theatre of the Absurd retain their power to shock. New Venture Theatre, Brighton www.newventuretheatre. org.uk

It is also an interesting facet in a wider context – a piece of an intricate jigsaw of coherence that illuminates Duffy as a person, and explores the mysteries of life, death, myth, and what it is to be human. Duffy, is described as having had a ‘tough childhood’ – her home in Worthing was bombed in the Second World War, burying her in rubble, killing her aunt, and severely injuring her mother. Perhaps this traumatic formative experience led to her having a strong sense of the value of life. From young adulthood onwards, she was actively engaged in lobbying for reform. This was not just with regards to gay rights, for which she was a vociferous campaigner, but for the introduction of PLR – Public Lending Right – which paid royalties to writers whose works were taken out on loan from public libraries. A thankless task at the time in many ways, but one that many writers, including myself, are hugely grateful for. She has also worked towards the introduction of animal rights, and published an animal rights handbook in 1984. Again, she was in the forefront of an important, yet controversial campaign, and one that has a great relevance in today’s world in which massive overproduction of meat has become a global ecological disaster. With regards to lesbianism, her novel, Microcosm, published in 1966, was an attempt to put lesbianism on the map at a time when the press

was largely concerned about male homosexuality and the prospective change in the law. The resulting controversy on publication helped to place lesbianism in its long, rich and varied cultural context. As Duffy says, ‘Until then, a lot of people thought that Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf had invented it.’ The common denominator for Duffy in all of this is a demand for respect. Not just for people, in all their diversity, but for all sentient beings. Duffy’s interest in what it is to be human is evidenced in her novel Gor Saga in which a female gorilla is successfully impregnated with male sperm, producing an infant, Gordon, or Gor, who will ultimately prove to have a profound streak of ‘humanity’. Duffy is good at raising such issues as what it is to be an outsider, and what it feels like to be dehumanised. In The Orpheus Trail, Alex Kish, small time curator of a provincial museum, presides over an important archaeological treasure trove that is uncovered in the locality. When some of the Saxon artefacts are stolen, a bizarre set piece starts to unfold. Early Christian and pre-Christian ritualistic scenarios are being recreated, using all too contemporary pre-adolescent boys, whose corpses are being used in these carefully masterminded and grotesque vignettes In Alex Kish, Duffy chooses a central character who is uncertain. Uncertain of his professional competence. Uncertain of his attractiveness, and as the story progresses, uncertain of his personal safety. As a curator, he is knowledgeable, in an ordinary sort of way, about Victoriana, but not an ‘expert’ in any field, certainly not in the field of ancient rites and religions. The hallmark of the subsequent police investigations is that of not-knowing. Not-knowing why these mythic scenes are being recreated, or by whom. It is this uncertainty that ultimately becomes a metaphor for profoundly problematic aspects of modern culture. Why have so many people in our world become expendable? How has the internet played its part in the exploitation of youngsters where parents will pay large sums of money in the hope of a better life for them in the First World? Kish feels he has little power to affect change, although he is undoubtedly changed by what he experiences. Perhaps, Duffy is telling us, the problem is that we allow ourselves to be lulled into a sense of apparent powerlessness, in a world in which – as she has personally proved over and over again – change really is possible if we stand up, shout loudly enough, and make a nuisance of ourselves. Duffy’s knowledge of Freudian concepts is put to good use in this dark, atmospheric tale. The ancient stories of Gods and their worshippers, and of sacrifices for the sake of appeasement, have a very modern psychological resonance here. One only has to think of the spotlight of media attention. There are some wonderfully poetic passages, too, that illuminate the text in thought-provoking ways.

Maureen Duffy will be appearing to talk about and reading from The Orpheus Trail at the Clifton Montpelier Powis Festival at St Nicholas Church, Dyke Road, Brighton and Hove, on Saturday 4 July at 4.30pm.

He was right, its reforms include: benefits and tax, housing, parental responsibilities, domestic violence protection, immigration status, hospital rights as next of kin, court exemption for partners, life assurance and pension and employment benefits. The big difference between marriage and civil partnerships though of course is in the name. One is called marriage and one isn’t. If back in 2004 the government had instead tried to open up marriage to gay couples, instead of creating civil partnerships, I do not believe they would have succeeded in parliament. That is not just my view but it is also the view of the gay equality organisation Stonewall. It was hard enough to get two-thirds of Conservative MPs to support civil partnerships, it would have been near impossible to get them to support same sex marriage. That though would have only been part of the battle. There are 26 bishops in the House of Lords as well as a whole collection of bigots who would have blocked and stripped bare the legislation. So even if the word marriage had been ‘allowed’ for gay couples it would have been meaningless in terms of achieving real equality. I wouldn’t want anybody to misunderstand what I am saying here. Around 20,000 civil partnerships were performed between 2005 and 2006, so what on earth could be up? Civil marriage is a heterosexual marriage that happens to be performed in a civic building. The way the Labour government wrote the legislation means that civil partnerships must be an exclusively civil procedure and can’t be performed in a church. The government bowed to the religious faiths which fought tooth and nail to have ‘doctrinal’ exemptions from the Sexual Orientation Regulations in 2003 and had their position strengthened by Ruth Kelly MP a government minister and member of Opus Dei. Ironically, civil partnerships create a form of sexual apartheid excluding opposite-sex partners, with one law for heterosexuals and another for the LGBT community. What is equally outrageous is that even if some of the progressive churches want to marry same sex couples, they are forbidden from doing so by the law. It would seem all of the religious faiths had a love-in, forgetting centuries of hatred for each other and sharing a joint hatred of us. fe\/'books Blotto, Twinks and the Ex-King’s Daughter

The Mariposa Club

Whatever Makes You Happy

By Simon Brett (Constable, £18.99)

By Rogoberto Gonzalez (Alyson Books £9.99)

by William Sutcliffe (Bloomsbury, £7.99)

BLOTTO (THE RT Hon Devereux Lyminster) and Twinks (Lady Honoria Lyminster) are a brother and sister intent on a little amateur sleuthing. He’s divinely good-looking, she’s ravishingly beautiful. He dimmer than a tarnished door-knocker, she’s bright as a button and sharp as a new pin. As Blotto, Twinks and the Ex-King’s Daughter opens, a body has been discovered in the library of the brother and sister’s ancestral home, Tawcester Towers. The bumbling local police are summoned and the corpse is quickly identified as that of a member of the entourage of the ex-king of Mitteleuropia, currently a guest of the Blotto and Twink’s formidable mother. Things are complicated further when the ex-king’s daughter is kidnapped and the intrepid Blotto is despatched by the mama to find and rescue her. The prolific Simon Brett (Blotto, Twinks and the Ex-King’s Daughter is the eightieth book) has here written a dotty adventure story which pastiches yearns such as Anthony Hope’s The Prisoner of Zenda or thrillers such as Agatha Christie’s The Body in the Library and populates it with a richly camp collection of characters who could have fallen from the pages of E F Benson or P G Wodehouse. Set somewhere between the two world ward, this is a highly amusing tale.

MAUI, TRINI, LIBERACE and Isaac are in their last year of high school in a small, predominantly Mexican-American town somewhere in the desert bear Palm Springs in Southern California. Each of them is defiantly gay, though none has yet had a sexual encounter. But they intend to make a lasting impression on their school before leaving and decide to create Caliente Valley High School’s first LGBT club. But theirs is a homophobic community and adult attitudes are fully reflected by the foursome’s schoolfellows. Verbal abuse can all-too-easily turn into physical violence – sometimes provoked by the outrageous behaviour of the flamboyantly femme Trini. Politically active Liberace, too, inspires violence simply by confronting prejudice. The closely-bonded quartet come from a variety of family background – Trini, dumped by disgusted parents, lives with an elderly an ailing aunt, Liberace’s deeply Christian mother and father are fully accepting and loving, Maui’s father, a widower, ignores the subject of his son’s sexuality and Isaac’s father is hostile and abusive. When his father’s hostility becomes too much for him to bear, Isaac disappears. Has he run away? Has he been abducted? Has something even more sinister happened to him? Regardless, his absence causes tensions to disrupt the lives of the three remaining members of ‘the mariposa club’ as they edge towards a new stage of personal development. The Mariposa Cub is an entertaining novel about the pressures faced by four outsiders in a less-than-forgiving sub-culture.

CAROL, GILLIAN AND HELEN have been friends since their sons were attending the same playgroup. They’re now woman in late middle age, still meeting once a month for coffee, custard creams and discussions about their less-than-satisfactory relationships with their offspring. Carol’s son Matt is Features Editor on men’s magazine Balls, a publication every bit as classy as its title. He lives alone in an open-plan warehouse apartment and has a soulless but indulgent lifestyle in which alcohol, recreational drugs and very young women are prominent. Gillian is an archetypal Jewish mother, over-bearing, interfering and possessive. In her frequently stated opinion, none of son Daniel’s girlfriends has been good enough for him and she’s determined to find him and nice Yiddisher girl with whom he can settle and on whom he will father her grandchildren. Helen, a swinger in her youth, has a different problem. Now settled into a safe but dull second marriage, she suspects that son Paul (something in the City) is gay and that there’s little likelihood of longed for grandchildren. Unfortunately, all three women’s relationships with their sons are strained to the point of distant and in a bid to remedy this they decide to move in with their boys and attempt to re-establish meaningful contact. William Sutcliffe’s Whatever Makes You Happy is a droll comedy of incomprehension, often funny, more often rather sad as the three women’s hopes look set to be dashed. All of us have (had) mother and there’s plenty here for each of us to identify with…

fe\/'TV Krod and Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of FireThurs 9pm BBC2 WITH A TITLE THAT sounds like it belongs on the credits of a particularly OTT gay porn movie, Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire – which has just begun a five-week run – seems set to hook audiences. A spoof of all those ridiculous fantasy movies (Ladyhawke, Conan the Barbarian, The Princess Bride) which’s tarred actors who wouldn’t have been out of place under the direction of Chi Chi LaRue, Krod Mandoon has a cast headed by Matt Little Britain Lucas as the evil Chancellor Dongalor (there’s a joke in there somewhere) and cute Sean Eastenders Maguire as insecure hero Krod. Also in the cast is Roger Allam (currently wowing audiences in the hit West End revival of the musical La Cage Aux Folles) as a rebel general who turns gay after a spell in Dongaloe’s castle dungeons. Lucas gives a performance that steals the show and he clearly relished the role. “It’s like playing all the slimy British villains over the years rolled into one,” he says.

Home and Away Weekdays 2:15pm and 6pm FIVE LIKE THE MAJORITY of soaps, Home and Away’s storylines tend to be a little far-fetched for what is in essence a tiny beach community tucked away on Australia’s east coast. In the next couple of weeks, Gardy wants Roman to participate in a robbery, but Roman doesn’t want to be a part of it. Gardy threatens that if he doesn’t he will go to the authorities about what Roman did in Afghanistan. What could that be? Shagged a fellow soldier? The truth is out there, avid viewers. Of course, the storylines are merely a fraction of the importance of Home and Away: the real reason to watch is the conveyer belt of beauties that the casting crew scouts from all over Australia and places right in your living room in rainy England, and it always has been. The fact that the boys are planning robberies and threatening each other about war only adds to the attraction.

fe\/'community South Coast BME group

INTERCOM IS WORKING with volunteers to facilitate a new virtual social group for a new group for black, minority and ethic lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people... search for ‘freedom Huria’ on Facebook. This group is intended to be a safe friendly space where lesbian, gay, bisexual and

trans people from many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and religions can meet and support each other in a positive way. This Group is for people who live in the South West of England, but it welcomes contact from friends across the south, and indeed the world! www.intercomtrust.org.uk

Pen to paper Sex for girls THE SHELLYBEANZ GROUP that was running as a writers’ group for LGBT people in Bournemouth has how closed due a lack of interest from members, but the good news is that since it closed its doors, the Intercom Trust is receiving interest from people wanting to get involved (always the case!). So, the Trust is keen to support the group in setting up again. “We are looking for a few interested individuals who would be happy to share the responsibility of hosting meetings (we will help find a venue, and support the group to find funding to pay for it),” they say. “There isn’t much to it really, just make sure you are at the venue to welcome people, and maybe lead the group in what it wants to be about in the beginning.” For more information or to find out how to get involved, call Vicky on 01392 201012 or email on vicky@intercomtrust. org.uk

BOURNEMOUTH-BASED HEALTH charity Over The Rainbow is busy telling girls that they need to look after their sexual health as well as the boys. The charity says girls are often left out of sexual health advice, which is mainly directed at men. “There’s loads of sexual health info out there for gay men, straight men and straight women, but sometimes it seems that gay and bi women are left out the loop. But not to worry help is at hand. There are all sorts of misconceptions around gay women’s sexual health. We’ve heard people say ‘I can’t get HIV I’m a lesbian’ and ‘I don’t need a smear I’ve never had sex with a man’… if only that were true!” The group has published information in its website for gay girls, under headings such as ‘What makes a healthy vagina?’.

“Contrary to popular belief you don’t need to clean inside the vagina (douching), in fact it will do more harm than good. The vagina can in fact cleverly clean itself,” it informs. “Soaps, fragrances and bubble baths can kill off your ‘good bacteria,’ which could cause itchiness, soreness or an offensive (fishy) smelling discharge.” Do we still have your attention, boys? “Unfortunately gay women CAN get STIs, even if they have never had sex with a man. Risks are lower, but there are still risks present. The risks vary depending on who you are having sex with and what type of sex you are having.” For your female-friendly sexual health MOT, call the Over the Rainbow experts on 01202 257 478 or visit www.rainbowbournemouth. co.uk

fe\/'back page Starswith Russell Grant 12 June - 25 June ARIES

Mar21/Apr20 It will be in your best long term interests to give someone plenty of time and space to come to their decisions. Give them a chance to stand on their own two feet and make up their own mind in their own way at their own speed without any urging, prompting or advising. You will be aiming to have a nice, quiet time at the end of June when you won’t want to do anything except put your feet up and chill out, but will friends and family let you?

TAURUS

Apr21/May21 Some big bills just can’t be avoided and they will put an added strain on the purse strings. If someone at home is being careless with their cash, put your foot down now. They might not like it but if all the family are trying to economise, it’s only fair they should be sensible too. You should use the next two weeks to catch up with some routine chores and get your financial paperwork in order before you can relax and have fun with friends.

GEMINI

May22/June21 It’s worth thinking about the aspects of your life that have been making you unhappy or unsettled. Rather than accepting this is how it has to be, think about using your talents in positive ways. If necessary discuss new ideas with those who might help you get them off the ground. This is a great time to ditch any routines, habits, views and values that are passed their sell by date. It’s time for a fresh start personally and professionally.

WIN! Tickets to Barbra & Liza! IN THE ABSENCE of any live dates involving uber gay icons Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand, what are the gays to do? Ah hah! Award winning performers Steven Brinberg and Rick Skye to the rescue! Rick Skye impersonates Liza with incredible energy and comedy - through clever re-wording of classic hits and mimicry Liza becomes an icon de force of hilarity and ingenuity. Rick Skye works his way through sharp parodies of such diverse songs as Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, and Sara Lee.. and check out those legs! When you first hear Steven Brinberg as Barbra singing Evergreen, Memories, Close to you, it’s almost like having Streisand in the room, as he moments and nuances that leave you breathless. Apparently, Brinberg does an uncanny Susan Boyle impression too! Two superstars, one stage, for only three dates. How could you miss it? Well, you won’t if you enter and win this lovely competition. one80news has five pairs of tickets to give away!

An offer received late in the month will need an instant decision. As much as you’d prefer to give it some thought, you must act swiftly to make the most of it.

You will have quite enough to handle just attending to your own business or domestic affairs in June so put your own interests first and focus on them.

VIRGO

Aug24/Sept23 Stick to healthy options when choosing your meals and don’t overdo it if you’re starting a new exercise regime. Someone who likes to gossip wants to bend your ear, but you can’t believe all you hear right now and you might make a rash decision based on some false information. Sticking to your own tried and trusted way of doing things is the best way forward now so don’t let others nag you into making changes that have no point or meaning.

with people who are going through a rough time. You know exactly how it feels to be in someone else’s shoes and that’s why your suggestions make them feel better. You might have to remind a friend, partner or neighbour of their responsibilities and make them toe the line, it won’t be easy but you can do it in a nice way and not ruffle their feathers.

SCORPIO

Oct24/Nov22 Deal decisively with family or finance related issues or they could quickly spiral out of control. Don’t hide bills away or allow a partner to hide his or her head in the sand when it comes to debts and bills. It’s a good time to start an economy drive and build a better budget for the future. The second half of June brings you a chance to do something you have always promised yourself you would do and make a lifelong ambition come true.

SAGITTARIUS

Nov23/Dec21 You have helped a lot of people in the past with your brand of sound common sense and practical advice. People know you’re great at this so they will be coming back for more now. Take care not to let them get too dependent on you or you’ll never have a minute to yourself. Later in the month you will want to withdraw a little from the hustle and bustle of life and think through your hopes and plans for the future before you make a big decision.

To enter: 1) Email your answer to info@one80news.com giving your name, address & telephone number. 2) Pop your answer on a postcard with contact details to one80news, 4 Steine Street, Brighton BN2 1TE. This prize is non-transferable and there is no cash alternative. Usual one80news ltd conditions apply (available on request). Entrants must be 18 years old or above. The closing date for this competition is Wed 24 June 2009. The winners can pick dates convenient to them.

CAPRICORN

Dec22/Jan20 Work and other routines are disrupted by an unexpected change of plan. Someone has forgotten to pass on a message and they won’t realise the bother they have caused. Since nothing much can be done about it now other than to accept it, try to take it all in your stride. You won’t easily forgive or forget someone who thinks they can ride rough shod over your wants and wishes; you’ll bide your time and get even when the time is right.

fe\/'nosh Tony Von Pub Grub WITH SUMMER UPON US THERE’S nothing like a pint of beer and some Pub Grub, so this week I hit the trails for some English Pub Food, from London to Brighton and then down to Southampton. So here are three that I can recommend.

Central StationLondon

The White HorseBrighton

The Endeavour Southampton

WHEN YOU THINK ‘FOOD’, you might not immediately think, ‘Central Station’, but it’s time to start. Situated in London’s King’s Cross, the venue is now serving up pub food as it should be: comforting meals, great value and cold pints to wash it down with. I chose pan-fried chicken breast with lemon and tarragon sauce, served with a crispy salad. My partner had the Summertime Tagliatelle with pine nuts, parmesan cheese, goat’s cheese and parsley. Then the crowing glory: home made ice cream. And with both meals for under £30, we went away beaming. Central Station is open for lunch Monday to Sunday and Dinner Tuesday to Saturday. The restaurant is situated on the third floor, however, for those that don’t want the track up stairs meals are served in the bar. This newly renovated pub also has fantastic cabaret shows and a great roof top terrace.

THE WORD IS OUT, ladies and gentlemen: the White Horse serves a good Sunday Roast. Well, perhaps the word got out a while back, as the place is generally packed on Sundays these days. We ate Mushroom Stroganoff with Arborio rice, and a well-stocked steak and kidney pie in beautiful filo pastry. After this, we managed to fit in a fruit flan with ice cream with a selection of fruit from our local fruitier. Meals are priced at around £6 for a main and £3 for dessert. Nick, the chef, does a great job, so make sure you pop in – meals are served seven days and nights a week!

AS A MALTESE MAN, I love to check out how English pubs serve up Italian food, and I must say I wasn’t at all disappointed when I chomped my way through Cannelloni at The Endeavour in Southampton. I’d give it a 9 out of ten! Others is our party chose the fish and chips, which was surprisingly good: lightly battered fish with lots of chips and a great garden salad. Get down there and sample the food and an ice cold beer!
