COME ON DOWN Support Brighton’s Winter Pride and help keep the summer festival free Winter Pride fun with the BLAGGS bowling competition

BRIGHTON AND HOVE Pride - the biggest free LGBT park event in Europe - is back for it’s annual winter celebration, and Londoners who flock to the city for the summer festival are being urged to join in to help keep it free of charge. Brighton Pride is a huge draw for Londoners, with thousands descending on the city every summer for the hugely popular event. But as Judith Manson, Fundraising and Communications Manager at Brighton Pride points out, how many of them are aware of the costs involved in such a massive free festival? “Raising funds for Brighton and Hove Pride is a year-round endeavour,” she says. “While sponsorship and donations from businesses and individuals make a valuable contribution, the lifeblood of Pride has always been how willing the community is to support it. Winter Pride is crucial to our fundraising efforts, and with so much going on, London’s LGBT community would be missing

out if they didn’t come down and take part.” This year’s Winter Pride is the biggest yet, with more than 90 official events taking place and with more community groups than ever before involved. “Every year I think that WP is going to be smaller than the year before, but every year it grows,” says Manson. 2009’s theme, Pride Beside the Seaside, is firmly in evidence, despite the chilliness of the season – events planned include a nude swim and a beachwear-only sports day; but if those send a chill down your spine there’s plenty else to get involved with. “There really is something for everyone,” says Manson. “We’d love to see you there, so come and take part and help keep the summer event free!”

Winter Pride runs from Sat 7 Mar to Sun 15 Mar. See pages 5 and 20 for the pick of the best community and scene events.

Editor’sComment HATS OFF to Stonewall: the gay rights organisation is kicking up a fuss about the frankly ridiculous ban on gay men giving blood. In terms of testing, gay men are probably the most responsible and aware group in society but our blood isn’t deemed good enough. This National Blood Service ban is a throwback to the knee-jerk, “Don’t Die of Ignorance” fear-mongering of the eighties. Of course, risky be-

haviour needs to be assessed when donating blood, but automatically equating gay men with HIV is antiquated, homophobic and an affront to equality - make some noise.

© AP Photo/The Morning Journal, Paul M. Walsh GAY RIGHTS activists are claiming victory after Fred Phelps, owner of the notorious www.godhatesfags.com website and founder of a controversial anti-gay church, was barred from entering the United Kingdom. Phelps intended to picket a production of the gay themed play, The Laramie Project. Staged by a Basingstoke sixthform college, the show, which explores the aftermath of the brutal torture and murder of

gay student Matthew Shepard in 1998, was set to be Phelp’s first protest in the UK. The ban on Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), has been welcomed almost universally within Britain. “This is great news and it shows the Government takes homophobia very seriously,” said Simon Wright, Co-Chair for LGBT Labour. “Hatred is not welcome in the UK”. Religious groups have also criticized Phelps with the Evan-

gelical Alliance UK calling for the WBC to “stop stirring up homophobic hatred”. Members of the WBC have been vocal about the ban on the church’s website. “You ungrateful brutes despise knowledge, it is a great kindness to have God’s prophets in your land,” said one. “God’s wrath and destruction is all that’s left for you, it is too late for the UK. God Hates You!” Another member, speaking before the ban, stated: “God Hates Eng-

land; Your Queen Is A Whore; Hell Is Real, Ask Matt”. The WBC, consisting mostly of Phelps’ family, gained infamy after protesting at Shepard’s funeral with banners stating “Matt Shepard rots in Hell”. The shock of the attack and this reaction galvanized the American gay community into fighting for protection. In 2007, a hate crime law known as the Matthew Shepard Act was finally passed, only to be vetoed by the then President, George W Bush.

Bring him back Class action HOME SECRETARY Jacqui Smith is under fire after a judge ordered her to find and bring back a gay asylum seeker who was illegally deported last year. High Court judge Sir George Newman found that the 38-yearold man, known only as ‘Mr X’, had been “deliberately misled” by the UK Border Agency. On 18 Sept last year he was put on a plane bound for his country of origin, having been told he was being taken to see an immigration officer. Mr X claims that he was handcuffed, punched and restrained as he was carried onto the plane. Judge Newman ruled that his deportation was “manifestly unlawful” and that the methods

used to remove him from the UK were arranged “to avoid any complication that could arise from his removal being publicly known.” The Home Secretary must now use her “best endeavours” to locate Mr X and return him to the UK. “Enough is enough of the contradictory policies of a government which on the one hand talks of their commitment to LGBT equality but which is still deporting LGBTs to torture and persecution,” says Green Party LGBT spokesman Phelim McCafferty. The UK Border Agency has expressed its disappointment at the decision, while Mr X is expected to launch legal action against the government over his treatment.

TEACHERS DEALING with homophobia in the classroom are being given a helping hand thanks to a new guide from HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust. Out in School is a free guide which gives teachers and other school staff ideas on how to discuss anti-gay behaviour and same-sex relationships with their students. “Homophobic bullying can be a big issue in schools,” says THT’s Phillip Wragg. “Teachers tell us that it can be a challenge to discuss same-sex relationships and homophobia in lessons. That’s why we’ve launched this guide to help teachers create more oppor-

tunities for discussion in class about the damaging effects of homophobia and homophobic bullying.” The guide has been written by practising teachers and has already been used succesfully in a range of classes. Visit www.tht.org.uk for more information.

WINTER WONDER

Support Winter Pride and keep the festival free THE PEOPLE OF Brighton and Hove are being urged to get behind this month’s Winter Pride festival to help keep the summer event free. Brighton and Hove Pride remains one of the biggest free LGBT events in Europe, but few people realise the enormous lengths organisers go to to ensure that the summer festival stays that way. Sponsorships and donations from individuals and businesses provide much of the funding, but organising Pride is a year-round endeavour, as Judith Manson, Fundraising and Communications Manager at Brighton Pride explains. “The winter months are when we have the least amount of money coming in,” she says. “Therefore, our Winter Pride event is crucial to our fundraising efforts, and works as a week that refocuses the community after the Christmas break.” This year’s Winter Pride is the biggest yet, with more than 90 official events taking place. “Every year I think that WP is going to be smaller than the year before, but every year it grows,” says Manson. As the event has grown, so has the number of

community groups involved. “We want both summer and winter Pride festivals to be as inclusive as possible,” she says. “In 2006, a trans tent was introduced at Brighton’s summer Pride, in conjunction with The Gender Trust and The Clare Project, which was a huge success. Through those relationships, we’ve been able to introduce lots of bi and trans-focused events to Winter Pride - for example, the Clare Project has something happening every day of the festival.” This year’s theme, Pride Beside the Seaside, is firmly in evidence, despite the chilliness of the season – events planned include a nude swim and a beachwear-only sports day; but if those send a shiver down your spine there’s plenty else to get involved with. “There really is something for everyone,” says Manson. “We’d love to see you there, so come and take part!”

as young people perceive it will be okay to tell their parents,” he said. “Because homophobic prejudice is still so rife in society, many of these people face a harsh reality when, instead of support, they have to suffer hostility, abuse and bullying from family and peers. HIV CHARITY The Sussex Beacon is celebrating another banner year for its annual Half Marathon in Brighton. Despite fears that the economic downturn would dent fundraising efforts, the £160,000 raised so far beats last year’s total by a whopping £40,000. More than 4600 runners took part in Sunday’s race, down a fraction on the 2008 total. Race honours in the male category went to James Baker, who finished the course in 1 hour and 10 minutes, while Loretta Sollars took first place for the women with a time of 1 hour and 21 minutes. PM makes History The Canteen can PRIME MINISTER Gordon Brown is hosting a drinks reception in Downing Street to celebrate the success of this year’s LGBT History Month. Brown will meet with the organisers and key figures from gay rights groups and the gay press at the event, which takes place at no.10 on Thur 5 Mar. It’s the first time that the Prime Minister has held a reception to mark LGBT History Month, which was started in 2005 by the campaigning group Schools Out.

One of Brighton’s iconic eateries is hoping for a brighter future after slashing prices and re-branding in a bid to survive the recession. Pokeno, famed for it’s range of pies, has now become Canteen. “It is very sad to lose the Pokeno brand which was unique to Brighton,” says owner Keith Kemp, a former trustee of Brighton and Hove Pride. ”But if people want Brighton’s unique shops to remain they need to support them rather than the big brands. If just ten people a day had eaten at Pokeno instead of the big chains, the brand would have survived. The change from Pokeno to Canteen is quite a gamble but hopefully our cheaper prices will attract people in.”

THE DIRECTOR of Pride London is challenging travel companies to stop exploiting the pink pound and do more to support their gay customers. Speaking at the European Symposium on Gay and Lesbian Tourism, Colm Howard-Lloyd said that companies must do more to encourage loyalty from gay customers. “Travel companies that sponsor Pride realise there’s a bit of give and take. If they spend money with us then it sends a sign to us that they’re serious about our market and not trying to cash in.”

fe\/'community Winter Pride Walkie talkie Footie! Bigger. Better. Hopefully not too chilly - Winter Pride in Brighton and Hove is almost upon us!

Renowned author Rose Collis delves into Brighton’s gay history with some Winter Pride walks.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE once again plays host to the UK’s largest winter LGBT festival this month, with a week-long Winter Pride (Sat 7 - Sun 15 Mar) packed with over ninety events across the city, more than ever before. Our guide to just some of the highlights follows, but with so much going on we thoroughly recommend checking out the offical Pride website (details

I HAVE MANY passions in life (and they know who they are…) — but four of my greatest enthusiasms are Brighton, alternative history, walking — and talking! So, after many months of cogitating and, with the encouragement of Herve Guyat of the New Steine and Gulliver’s Hotels, I am launching Walkie Talkies, my own special tours, in Winter Pride. These will be the first of many I’m planning to devise and lead during 2009. Now, you may well be thinking, ‘But why? Surely there are plenty of guided tours already being run in Brighton?’ Well, yes — to a point… as anyone who’s familiar with my books and journalism will know, I’m not particularly interested in mainstream, ‘homogenised’ histories: the more eccentric and offbeat, the better, as far as I’m concerned. I always examine my subjects at a slightly odd angle, and usually find there’s something to see that

other eyes might have missed or consider insignificant. And, alas, what usually gets omitted (either by fault or design) are the queer and/or women’s histories — which is where these Walkie Talkies come in. Of the two tours scheduled for Winter Pride, one is completely new, and the other, Time Out, a revamped and re-routed version of a walk only undertaken once before. But don’t worry if you can’t make these walks: I’ll be repeating both of them during the Brighton Fringe Festival (see www.brightonfestivalfringe. org.uk for details) and at other times during the year, as well as devising others on different historical themes. Gay students from across the country are descending on Brighton to celebrate the fifth LGBT Student Pride. Torsten Hojer talks to Tom Guy, Chair of Student Pride.

Yee-ha! Ceilidh

THIS YEAR’S National Student Pride event looks like it will be the biggest gathering of LGBT students this country has even witnessed. With the support of the majority of the gay press and a dedicated team of volunteers, preparations are now in full swing for Student Pride 2009. BBC Radio 1 DJs Scott Mills and Aled Jones are appearing (to DJ and to sit on the political debate panel respectively); Next big thing Frankmusik will be performing, and a host of fresh LGBT live music acts are busy rehearsing; twelve of Brighton’s hot gay bars and clubs are bracing themselves for the student onslaught; the super-swanky Digital nightclub, situated right on the beachfront pebbles, is rigging up its sound system so things can get even boomier. “We’re really thrilled with the way things are going,” says Tom. “The feedback we’re getting is amazing. Lots of gay students are telling us that it’s so important for them to have an event where they can come and hang out with other LGBT students. If there isn’t a gay scene in the town where your uni is I think it’s great that gay people can come to a city like Brighton to Student Pride and see how many gay people there are, and that it’s not abnormal. That knowledge is so important. It’s good to know that there are thousands of gay students in the country rather than the six that you might bump into at your university’s gay group meeting. National Student Pride is about everyone being able to hear what their peers have to say. And most importantly, it’s about havThe Student Pride team ing fun together.”

Having heard the results, one80news can report that the change of direction is a fantastic move,

which makes the prospect of these live shows even more exciting. Playing on Tue 10 Mar at Komedia in Brighton and on Wed 11 Mar at the Scala in London, frontwoman Shingai Shoniwa’s transformation from shouty-punk-thing into slinky disco goddess is truly a wonder to behold. Best to book up now - Noisettes look set to dominate 2009.

NOW IN ITS fifth year, the African Soul Rebels tour returns to the UK this month, arriving at the Concert Hall in Brighton on Sun 8 Mar and the Roundhouse in London on Mon 9 Mar. This year’s tour presents artists from the west, south and east of the continent: Senegal’s Baaba Maal (above), Zimbabwe’s Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi and Kenyan-American supergroup Extra Golden delivering the very best in soul rebel music.

LIKE THE FAMILY Von Trapp on Ritalin, last year’s X Factor finalists are out on their ‘contractual obligation’ tour, playing at Wembley Arena on Sun 1 Mar and the Brighton Centre on Fri 6 and Sat 7 Mar. Thrill as “my” Diana Vickers throws intriguing shapes with her doll-like hands, gasp as Ruth Lorenzo brings new meaning to the phrase ‘power ballad’ and marvel as Alexandra Burke ‘does’ emotion. Then try to remember the rest of the bunch - a top night out!

RATED ONE of the best of its kind in the country, the Sussex Symphony Orchestra give us regular opportunities to watch masterful musicians making a meal of the food of love. On Sat 14 Mar at St Bartholomew’s Church in Brighton, Lithuanian violinist Diana Galvydyte joins the group to perform, as Mark Andrew James conducts with passion and lightens the evening’s events with quirky and witty introductions to the playlist. A wonderfully different Saturday evening.

TalentSpotters Tom’s Pick: Rosalita EVERYTHING ABOUT this band has a comical bent, right down to the name itself. Named after an early Bruce Springsteen song, you would be forgiven for thinking this would be some kind of American folk rock tribute band. Instead, Rosalita are the absolute antithesis, providing jerky indie-electro disco rock reminiscent of Young Knives blended with Joy Division and just a dash of Adam Ant and Madness. The band, who have been trying to maintain their alternative outsider credibility since winning the Channel 4 Road to V festival TV competition, are just the right side of commercial - they’re unusual without being uncomfortable. Absolute stand out song is Manga Girl, which will be their breakthrough hit if there ever will be one. Rosalita play at The Hope in Brighton on Thur 5 Mar. www.myspace.com /rosalitaband

Kayleigh’s Choice: Bird Eats Baby BIRD EATS BABY is like falling into the most sumptuous of mouths: their sharp lyric-teeth envelop as they guzzle you whole with their velvety deep sound before you fall, enraptured, down their dark throat of lunacy. Live at The Marlborough in Brighton’s hugely popular SteamPunk night, they performed amidst hay bales injected with Victorian brass ornaments and rusty pressure guages on The Marlborough’s vintage stage. Tim Burton-esque, right down to Mish’s spiderpinned collar; a coccyx-tingling showcase of raw finery. www.myspace.com/birdeatsbaby

Exhilirating and thought-provoking dance takes to the stage in Brighton AN OUTSTANDING season of dance continues at the Brighton Dome with engagements from two very different companies. Performing on Tues 3 Mar, Tanja Liedtke’s Twelfth Floor features perfomers from Australian Dance Theatre and DV8 Physical Theatre and is a darkly funny physical exploration of human interactions. By turns tender and explosive, this “extraordinary dance work for our times” (Sydney Morning Herald), is a fitting tribute to Liedtke, who completed this project before her death in a car crash in 2007, aged 29. Mon 16 and Tue 17 Mar sees the Jasmin Vardimon Company return to Brighton with its acclaimed work Justitia. Staged impressively on a revolving set, Justitia takes a breathtaking look at the justice system via a gripping crime story played out by eight fiercely athletic dancers. Provocative, funny and energetic, the worlds of dance and law are juxtaposed to stunning effect. There’s more dance at the Dome to come, with the Richard Alston Dance Company’s explosive Blow Over arriving at the end of March - details in a forthcoming issue of one80news.

FROM YASMINA REZA - author of worldwide mega-hit Art - God of Carnage arrives in Brighton this month following a hugely successful run in London’s Gielgud Theatre last year. When the parents of warring children meet up to talk things over it isn’t long before their inner brats boil to the surface. Richard E Grant heads a magnificent cast in this outrageously funny play. Running from Mon 16 - Sat 21 March at the Theatre Royal, Brighton.

BRACE, BRACE: theatregoers are set to get a taste of the high life this spring with Jet Set Go! - the cabin crew musical - scheduled to arrive in the capital on Tues 31 Mar. Having already wowed audiences and critics at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, this tale of lust and love at 30,000 feet jets in for a strictly limited three week run at the Jermyn Street Theatre. Hilarious, melodic and likely to give Pam Ann a run for her money as the off-duty trolley dolley’s night out of choice!

Keeping an eye on Watchmen Can movies get any darker after The Dark Knight? Very possibly... ONE OF THE most hotly-anticipated movies of the year, the long-awaited film adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel Watchmen hits UK cinemas on Fri 6 Mar. Set in an alternate 1980s America, this is a world where self-styled superheroes are commonplace but superpowers are not - only the luminous Dr Manhattan displays god-like abilities here. With the popularity of comic-book adaptations at an all time high, Watchmen comes burdened with the weight of impossible-to-satisfy expectation. While director Zack Snyder (300, Dawn of the Dead) is promising a faithful translation to the big screen, Alan Moore has publicly distanced himself from the project. However, from the look of early previews there’s plenty to get our teeth into - a dark and twisted vision of a world close to, but not quite, our own? Check. Social commentary to teach children about responsibility? Check. Hotties of both sexes in tight-fitting, anatomically correct costumes? Check. See you in the queue.

Location Kingsway Court, First & Second Avenue, Hove, East Sussex, BN3 2LR Tel 0845 201 0835 Open Mon-Sat noon-2pm, 6.30pm-11pm; Sun noon-2.30pm, 6.30pm11pm Web www.balibrasserie.co.uk There’s not much left that can surprise a resident of Brighton, respect indeed then to the Hove-based Bali Brasserie, which manages to delight and astound from the outset. Situated opposite the pretty Hove seafront and with no worthy rival eatery in sight, the restaurant has had the space to develop a unique personality and cultivate its genuine Southeast-Asian feel. The spacious bar is reputedly the longest in Brighton and its wave-like shape is complemented by banana-leaf fans, traditional paintings, figurines and bamboo pillars. Non-diners are welcome, but may be temped by the extraordinarily reasonable two-course bar meals for £6.95, with a choice of eight starters and 12 main courses. There is live music in the bar every Thursday and Friday evening, and karaoke on Sunday nights. The restaurant itself is pleasingly airy with ceiling fans, crisp table linen, comfortable armchairs and quietly attentive staff all adding to the relaxing ambience. The chefs were hand-picked by Indonesian-born owner Tanjit Calais. Whilst in Malaysia, he invited hopefuls to cook at his mother’s house and arranged for the best three to come to Brighton. Unsurprisingly this has resulted in some inspired creations. The house speciality, the Indonesian rijsttafel (rice table), is a four-course feast featuring a unique ‘eat as much as you like’ buffet of 15 different Indonesian dishes (good value at £16.95). We started with a beautiful sweetcorn and vegetable soup served with giant Javanese prawn crackers. This was followed by the most delicious chicken satay served with a vegetable salad topped with peanut sauce. The main course buffet was a dazzling array of beef, chicken, king prawns, noodles, rice and vegetable dishes; and for dessert we opted for a refreshingly cool mango torte. All the food here is gratifyingly good value, with starters ranging between £3.25 and £7.95, and mains between £4.25 and £7.75. Desserts are around £3 and consist of ice creams and sorbets or, for the more adventurous, the pisang flambé Balinese – banana flambéed in liqueurs and butter with cinnamon and coconut ice cream – which is a perfectly flavoursome conclusion to an aromatic evening.

fe\/'essential arts & ents Shining an Eternal Light Mark Baldwin, Artistic Director of The Rambert Dance Company, gives us ten good reasons to see their stunning new work, Eternal Light in Brighton. 1. The Rambert has a long relationship with Brighton – we’ve been going there since 1932, so the Theatre Royal is an important venue for us. We get a great mix in Brighton – women seem to love dance, and of course so do all those nice young men! 2. Eternal Light is something new - a requiem for the living. We wanted a requiem for young people, something that hasn’t been done before. 3. The music for Eternal Light is by Howard Goodall who wrote the music for Blackadder and the Vicar of Dibley and QI, so he’s got this televisual voice. He also writes the music for Christchurch Cathedral Choir, Oxford which tells in the elegiac rising and falling quality of the music – all that sexy stuff. 4. What you’ll see and hear when you come to theatre is incredible music

and incredible visuals – it’s angels floating down from the ceiling. It really is exceptional. 5. The costumes are by Michael Howells, who’s an art director at Christian Dior – the men have bare tops so you get to see their gorgeous lovely torsos - and they start out in tight white pants! 6. We have a very good looking and incredible bunch of dancers at the moment.

9. Our philosophy is to bring the best dance and the best music to everybody, to do fresh and new things with brand new choreographers. It’s the old and the new held in balance. 10. You don’t need to know anything about it, just come along and enjoy it – some people tell me that they cry watching Eternal Light. Something about the combination of the dancers, the score and the costumes – it’s a very emotional journey.

7. Eternal Light is in ten movements – some really fast, vigorous ones and some slow orgasmic rising ones too - it’s a BIG piece – it’s got the whole company in it, and it’s a great opportunity to see a big choir singing too. 8. What differentiates us from everyone else is that we tour with a live orchestra – if you don’t really know dance then music is your hook into it and we offer that.

THE SECOND COMIC relief single this year is a comedy release of the Dolly Parton/ Kenny Rogers classic by Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon of the BBC’s Gavin & Stacey, and the legend that is Tom Jones. Surprisingly they really haven’t murdered it at all - a very good cover by all accounts. Even if you don’t like it, its all in a very good cause so make sure you download it.

TRIUMPHANT FROM their Brit Award and performance, Chris Lowe & Neil Tennant return with their new single from the Xenomania-produced album Yes. Love Etc is PSB through and through. Tennant’s haunting vocals float over layers of synths with no effort, creating a strong comeback single. Watch out for the PSB mix of Lady GaGa’s forthcoming single Nothing Else to Say.

SECOND TIME lucky for New Zealand’s Ladyhawke - after a luke-warm reception last time, she’s finally got considerable airplay for this single. With eighties undertones running all the way through it, you can almost sing a whole host of that decade’s classics over the catchy riffs. You can definitely hear a whiff of Cars, by Gary Numan in there. Oops, I might be showing my age here!

fe\/'essential arts & ents Books Peter Burton The Coroner by M R Hall JENNY COOPER, newly-appointed coroner for the Severn Valley district of Bristol, is an attractive woman in her early forties. However, following a particularly messy divorce, she’s in virtual meltdown. On the first day in her new job, in a locked drawer, she discovers an autopsy report on a fifteenyear-old girl who had been working as a prostitute before being found dead from a massive heroin overdose. There’s something about the file that suggests Jenny’s predecessor (recent victim of a fatal heart attack) might have been negligent. It isn’t long before Jenny, increasingly neurotic and reliant on tranquilisers, is investigating not just the girl’s death but also that of a fourteenyear-old tearaway found hanged in his cell in a privately run youth detention centre. And then Jenny finds herself pursued by an aggressive journalist who has herself become the subject of police interest. Both women begin to suspect cover-up and conspiracy. The Coroner is an unusual example of the procedural thriller. The setting, Bristol, is far less familiar and pill-popping Jenny is an unlikely heroine, a combination of the fragile and the steelily determined. And though she finds herself probing two deaths, the crimes about which she must find the truth – and which in part hinge on the testimony of a rent boy – are of the much more

TV/DVD Niall McMurray The Big Red Nose Climb BBC1 Thu 12 Mar 9pm IF THE BBC had any sense, this would have been a Wacky Races-style celebrity chase to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro where two fifths of Girls Aloud resort to ever more dastardly measures to beat one fifth of Take That and a third of Mis-Teeq to the summit. Missed opportunities aside, this Comic Relief documentary still has the potential to be absolutely hilarious - I’m already imagining scenes where Cheryl and Kimberley gang up on Fearne Cotton in attempt to steal some Kendal Mint Cake - and it’s always nice to see celebrities taken out of their natural environment, especially when they’re plunged into one that poses a genuine risk to health. Heaven only knows how Chris Moyles will manage, but should things go horribly wrong and turn into an Alive-style cannibal-fest, he’ll provide sustenance for the entire team for a good few weeks. Now that would be good television...

Quantum of Solace Out Mon 23 Mar I DON’T KNOW about you, but I’m experiencing severe problems trying to get my head around the re-booting of the Bond franchise. Normally I’m the first to suspend disbelief, which has allowed me to get past many things - recasting in Neighbours and the increasingly implausible mother-daughter age-gap between Gail and Audrey on Corrie being just two, but 007 2.0 is giving me a fit of the vapours. If we’re back to the beginning, why is Judi Dench still wandering around being M? And has everything that happened in all the previous movies been consigned to the dustbin? It’s just too much for a bear of little brain to get his head around. Still, mind-twisters aside, Quantum of Solace is a far better proposition than Casino Royale - tighter, faster-paced and a hell of a lot shorter - and Mr Craig is settling nicely into the role. Shame the theme tune is a load of old bobbins...

THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD Lydia (both of whose parents have died from Aids-related illness) finds herself looking after her nine-year-old brother Joe and her five-year-old sister Kesi. She has no money and faces fierce opposition from her paternal grandmother who appears to loathe the three surviving members of her immediate family. Set in a small village in South Africa, Sally Grindley’s Torn Pages is a story of unrelenting hardship and struggle against a climate of ignorance and fear and is realistic enough not to propose anything even halfway resembling a happy ending. For Lydia, Joe and Kesi simply staying alive is a victory over adversity and that they might escape the machinations of their heartless grandmother, stay in school and have something to eat amounts to triumph. In the West we still unwarrantedly tend to associate HIV and Aids with gay men and this well-crafted and touching novel for young adults serves as a timely reminder that in other parts of the world (Africa, Asia) the victims of Aids are other – the vast numbers of children daily orphaned as their parents die.

fe\/'voices Dan H.G.knows sex...

What’s love got to do with it?

APPARENTLY LONDON smells of sex. Whatever kind of sex you’re into or up for is available, if you’ve got the patience, guts, inclination (or money) to go for it. You can get it online, offline, in a park or a sauna, at the gym, in a toilet in a busy city bar or in a club themed for bears, chavs, leather men or nudists. So what’s love got to do with it? What’s love but second hand emotion? Looking for love in London is like traipsing through Narnia – as soon as you’re out of the closet, you’re in a land where it’s always winter but never Christmas, although with a lot more evil icy queens around. I can get sex whenever I want, with pretty much any kind of guy I want. I’m no slapper (although my flatmate is), but I’ve been very sexually active since my university days, with a very small number of these liaisons ever getting to round two. But enough is enough is enough. I want someone to share things with, watch DVDs with and go for Sunday Lunch with. With plenty of wild, brilliant sex too, but not just sex for the sake of sex, no strings. What’s wrong with string? Is wanting a connection that’s deeper than a huff, puff and a squirt so much to ask for? We live in a culture that’s all about the physical act of sex – porn stars are put on a pedestal by the gay press, boys with six packs in tiny undies cover the walls of shops, bars and magazine pages. Waist size has got to be small and cock size XXL. If you don’t go to the gym,

there’s got to be something wrong with you... It’s as if it makes you less masculine, less of a man if you want some L-O-V-E. I’ve been seriously looking for a relationship since the start of the year. When I say seriously, I mean I’ve avoided (mostly successfully, well, ish) one-night stands and have deleted online profiles that were too focused on sex. I changed ‘looking for’ to ‘relationship,’ cutting out ‘1-on-1 sex’, and altered the wording accordingly. As soon as I did that, the amount of messages I received plummeted, so I changed it back in an attempt to lure them in, then talk about dates rather than ‘what U up4/in2?’ So far so good. I’ve had lots of guys run for the sex-filled hills in terror, but also a few pretty decent dates. Some men seemed utterly confused when I first made it clear there would be no shagging on the schedule on day one. ‘You’ve read my profile right?’ ‘Umm‌ no, but I liked the pictures?’ Right then‌ But loads of the guys I’m talking to online and the lucky gems that I meet up with, after a bit of openness on my part seem to be saying – ‘Well, actually, I’d quite like a boyfriend too.’ It’s OK to want more than sex. It doesn’t make you any less of a man. It’s OK to want to find someone to love, and it’s OK for men to love each other. It’s also fine not to want a relationship – but it’s just another lifestyle choice, it doesn’t make you cooler, more masculine, sexier or edgy. It’s fine to say ‘I believe in a thing called love.’ What’s love got to do with it? Everything.

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE weeks or months to mull over a potentially life-changing decision. At other times you have to act quickly or risk losing out. The latter was definitely the case when my partner Graeme and I were presented with the opportunity to launch one80news Ltd and 3SIXTY Magazine Ltd. It was a case of jump in now or watch someone else snap up the titles. Luckily, both Graeme and I knew instantly that it was the right decision, and so Marble Media Publishing was born. It’s a great source of pleasure for us to take these great titles and relaunch them into a market starved of quality writing, entertaining features and community spirit. Marble Media Publishing is a family, and it’s a growing one – moving

forward we’re increasing the size of the paper and magazine and distributing more copies than ever before; we’ve also added a new pullout Brighton Listings Guide for 3SIXTY, which will be the last word on what’s happening in this great city. The word is recession is now officially banned from our office, and from here on in we begin to celebrate and look forward to bigger and better things. I’d like to thank all our advertisers, who have made their own personal right decision to support us, and by extension, the LGBT community. Finally, a big thank you to all our readers, who are the lifeblood of both one80news and 3SIXTY magazine. We couldn’t do it without you.

Tom Houghgrumpy old man

Manners maketh man I AM LUCKY enough to spend my time between London and Brighton and it never fails to amaze me how culturally different the two places can be. My journey to work takes me through South Kensington – not exactly a grubby, poverty stricken ghetto with put upon individuals attempting to eke out a meagre existence, but it was there, as I attempted to board a bus in a none too civilised melée (nobody actually queues anymore) that a particular Chelsea type of woman – black velvet head band, tweedy, sensible but chic suit, and a face like a robber’s dog simply shoved me - quite deliberately - out of the way explaining that she was in a hurry. It is at times like these that all witty retorts desert you utterly, fear renders you incapable of a scathing remark and my only revenge was to negotiate the retrieval of my Oyster card from the reader very very slowly, thereby alienating the entire bus. Now let us move southwards to Brighton. The elderly are allowed onto buses first, seats are given up for them; inter-generational conversations can be struck up. All in all a thoroughly more pleasant experience. Even the buses themselves seem to be polite. In London all you get is a blunt “NOT IN SERVICE” but Brighton & Hove declare “Sorry not in Service.” From the moment you step off the train in Brighton and begin to breathe the air you cannot see, the pace slows slightly and you find you really don’t want to lynch that old lady fumbling in her purse to pay the driver. Your attitude of “Get out the Bloody Way” as you barge past the aged and infirm evaporates into something far more civilised. For far too long “manners” has been condemned as a patronising middle class quality. But I don’t

agree. Most of them are simply little rules which make a crowded life a little easier. ‘Ladies first’ is not a belittling gesture towards the ‘weaker sex’ but an attempt to sort out the ground rules of going through a door. Someone has to go first because we can’t all go in at the same time. “Don’t chew with your mouth open” because frankly it’s quite unpleasant seeing what you are eating and “Don’t talk with your mouth full” is surely just an expression that you don’t want to be wearing what another is eating. The advent of mobile phones has seen their use grow without any accompanying ‘code of practice’ i.e. their polite usage. Prattling loudly into a phone as you sit in a quiet railway carriage or talking as you negotiate paying a driver is alienating and offensive. It seems to belittle the people around because you have rendered their thoughts unimportant as you selfishly bark out your conversation. At the risk of being labelled (yet again) a Grumpy Old Man, some of our youth seem to be going through life without considering others. The simple act of walking down a crowded street can demonstrate this. There seems to be very little awareness of others. A group can be walking and talking with scant regard to those coming towards them resulting in a wake of individuals who have leapt to one side in order to facilitate their progress. Actually, to Hell with manners. As an official G.O.M. I’m going to stand my ground, barge into people, push in front of others, blather noisily on my phone, chew with my gob open and sit on my bus seat as a poor little old crippled lady struggles to stand with all her shopping. And I am definitely going to stop saying sorry.

Tony has a vision for business and is the big boss who everyone answers to. Being an Aussie, he’s known for his direct attitude to work, and to play. And with his Maltese heritage, he could be called a malteser. But he might not like it if you say that to his face.

Niall McMurray

Torsten Højer

Editor one80news

Editor 3SIXTY Editor of 3SIXTY magazine for nearly three years, Torsten has been primarily responsible for all the leaps 3SIXTY has made. With all his contacts in the media world, he continues to take the magazine from strength to strength.

Niall has been editor of one80news for six months, and in his time has made vast improvements to the title. With a head for news writing and an astonishing ability to slip something about Cheryl Cole into each issue without anyone noticing, he fits in very well at Marble Media. And his Scottish accent makes the boys at the Bulldog go weak at the knees.

Carl Hobden

Jonny Marsh

Design and Production

Nightlife Editor

Long-suffering Carl is the man who makes the titles happen, to deadline. After seven years living in the middle of Kemptown, he knows the gay scene like the back of his hand, and is often seen rushing around bars, camera in hand, capturing events and happenings.

The most recent addition to the team, Jonny is the man with his finger on the social pulse. With all the amazing events going on, not just in Brighton and London, but all over the country, it’s no wonder everyone asks Jonny where the place to be is at the weekend!

Kayleigh Pridmore Senior Sales Executive

Tom Hewitson Reporter If something can be expressed in five words, Tom will say it in fifteen. Tom has a passion for politics and a ‘right-on’ nature that brings intelligence and legal know-how to the team. He is also the man able to keep incredibly calm under pressure, for instance when chasing unpaid invoices. And, he has the best hair this side of Moulsecoomb.

Kayleigh leads the sales department for 3SIXTY magazine, and has many years experience in sales, despite her youthful appearance. Hailing from the small US territory of Guam in the western Pacific Ocean, Kayleigh is ‘your girl at 3SIXTY’ with an alluring American accent, red hair, a vision for marketing your brand and, well, odd socks.

Adam Pennington Sales Executive Adam (or Madam, as he’s affectionately known) works on advertising sales on both 3SIXTY and one80news and wears the most colour-co-ordinated outfits in the office. Adam comes from Surrey, so enjoys the finer things in life, such as going to the races and sipping pink champagne through a straw.

As home to the pubcrawl on Sun 8 Mar, Revenge will be kitted out for a series of live bands including Doll & The Kicks and Andrea Kenny & The Cavalry. Otherwise in Revenge-land Girls On Top is continuing to entertain the girls, who are looking forward to the next foam party on the 19th.

Aeon Events THE FRUITSTERS take a different direction in aid of Winter Pride on Sat 7 Mar. They head down to Ghetto where Freak La Chic Boutique meets Wig Out for a one off freaky fundraiser. The Wig Out sounds of Boogaloo Stu and Tommy Turntables mixed with club kid glamour at the La Freak Boutique Booth makes for a very different evening of fundraising indeed!

The Bulldog THE BULLY doesn’t do things by halves, that’s why its fundraising weekend is 63 hours long! The fun kicks off on Sat 7 Mar with a night of games. And this is no Cluedo, it’s games the Bulldog way- so after you’ve donated money you can win some good old fashioned alcohol. The games are ‘Name That Tune’ and ‘Cash Karaoke’. On the Sunday it continues with an all day happy hour pass for £1 and donate anything to sing along with host Micky. Mon 9 Mar sees a comedy game where you can donate to ‘Stop The DJ’ if you don’t like the song. Dig out the long forgotten trunks on Tues 10 Mar for a Beachwear Party because the sun always shines within the Bulldog!

The Marlborough NOW I’M SURE you have woken up one crisp winter morning, taken a stroll along the seafront to discover to your amazement that there are several naked gays frolicking in the torrential rain and massive freezing waves. Not meaning to put you off, maybe you thought ‘hell this looks like the most liberating experience, I wish I could do that!’ Well, now you can - and all in aid of Pride. The Clare Project hosts this adventure on Sun 8 Mar at Brighton Nudist Beach, all followed by a warming roast at the Marlborough. On Mon 9 Mar The Clare Project are back with a Trans Film night.

Mindmatters Having an Extraordinary Life: what’s your dream? DO YOU KNOW The Secret? If you don’t then read on! Your mind is an amazing piece of kit but doesn’t come with an instruction manual - so here’s the section on how to get what you want. Focus: be specific about what you want and write it down, draw it, say it and picture it in your mind like you’ve already achieved your dream. Believe; feel the feelings that you would feel if you had your dream and have faith that you will achieve

it and acquaint yourself with your dream daily. Congratulations: you’ve just programmed up your subconscious! You don’t need to know how to get there, just focus and believe: your mind does more than you give it credit for. Watch your decision making processes over the next few months and see how they change. Remember - live your life without boundaries, have a great day and have an Extraordinary Life!

Growthplan Experiencing a revolution in hair-care from Eucaderm

Before

After

HERE AT one80news we like to go the extra mile for our readers, so when we were asked to pay a visit to hair-loss therapy clinic Eucaderm there was only one candidate - our very own editor, Niall McMurray. As a highly-stressed and constantly busy newspaper mogul, it’s perhaps no surprise that his hair has started to go. But Eucaderm treatments are not just for people with hair loss and scalp conditions - they are for everyone who wants healthier, stronger hair. “For some reason we visit the doctor at the first sign of trouble,” says Niall. “But when hair

loss starts to become a problem we bury our heads in the sand - I know I did.” Niall visited Eucaderm’s clinic in Hove - which has been established for more than two years - for a consultation with founder David Satchell. “David was completely honest with me about my prospects for hair regrowth, which was really refreshing” he says. “Four weeks in and my hair already looks and feels better. The treatment feels great and makes my scalp feel positively alive - the hour I spend in the treatment room is absolutely the most relaxing of my week!” We’ll be following Niall’s progress over the next few months as he continues treatment with David and Managing Director Sarah Landon. If you have concerns over hairloss or want to make sure your hair is as healthy as possible, contact the team at Eucaderm - details below.

Fitcorner Dispelling the myths and lies of the fitness industry THIS ISSUE we’ll be looking at the fitness myth that affects us all: the myth of Carbs making you fat! Boys and girls let me reveal, that CARBS ARE NOT EVIL! Yes, the Atkins Diet works, but it is not healthy and not suitable in the long term. The Atkins Diet allows you to eat only Protein (meats and fish), with fat (from the meat or added), so you have to cut out carbs from your diet. The problem is we are cutting out vitamins, fibre and other nutrients, which are

essential for good health. Low carb diets work because you eat fewer calories than in normal diets. It’s not the carbs themselves that are making people fat, it’s the quantities you’re eating. If you are active or exercising, you need carbs to fuel your workouts, your recovery and your day-to-day tasks. You just have to time it right. Try cutting carbs in the evening; this often gives good results without any negative impacts on your health.

GPtips Dr Satinder Kumar joins the one80news team to answer all your health questions WANT ADVICE on how to beat the winter blues, stress, recreational drug use, cervical cancer screening or caring for sun damaged skin? It’s only an e-mail away. Over the next few months I will talk about medical conditions that concern the LGBT community. From mystery rashes and intimate itches to silicone implants and oestrogen patches—all manner of lumps, bumps and yes humps! I’m here to help, inform and advise. This week’s focus is Genital Warts (GW): easy to get, hard to talk about, and difficult to cure. Human Papilloma Viruses (HPVs) cause GW. There are over 100 different strains and staggeringly, 75% of the world’s population (men and women) have been exposed to HPV making GW the most common STD. For women GW are potentially serious because

of their strong link to cervical cancer. For men they are a concern too; particularly for HIV positive men in whom there is an increased risk of developing anal cancer. What should I look for? GW are painless, often itchy, always unsightly and so a turn off. They grow anywhere on the genitals, anus and groin. They look like raised circular bumps on the skin so are easy to spot. Flesh coloured or a little on the grey side, they have a rough surface. If several grow close together they can look like a cauliflower! Around the anus, squeezed by the buttocks they can dangle. In women warts can hide inside the vagina or among skin folds of the vulva so look carefully. Some people mistake warts and skin tags. If you think you have genital warts then make an appointment with the sexual health clinic or GP and they’ll

be able to tell straight away. What is the treatment? The doctor will paint GW with a special virus killing liquid made from a plant extract. If your warts are large then liquid nitrogen may be used to freeze then off…may sting a little. The good news is that a vaccine (Gardasil) is available to protect women and girls from catching HPV in the first place, so reducing the risk of developing cervical cancer. Gardasil prevents persistent infection against strains of HPV that cause 70 percent of cervical cancers, and 90 percent of genital warts. If you keep getting GW ask your doctor about the vaccination. HIV positive men may also benefit from protection. Remember, vaccines will not protect you against all strains of HPV so you must continue cervical screening as recommended by your doctor.

Kim Lummis on how to handle a dog attack

FEISTY PANDORA likes her own space and really loves being outdoors. This outgoing, confident cat, who is around five to seven years old, lives her life according to her own rules and is perfectly happy to interact with people as long as it’s on her terms. She would be well suited to a couple who are out at work all day as she would appreciate their company all the more when they are at home.

UNFORTUNATELY DOG attacks have been in the news again. Most people get bitten because they either misread the dog’s intentions or react wrongly when approached. Dogs have poor eyesight and have to come very close to scent you. Here are a few points to remember to avoid an attack: When being approached stand perfectly still and allow the dog to sniff you. Don’t kick out or run away from the dog. This could make the dog retaliate. If a dog is running towards you, stand totally still. Don’t move a muscle. Wait for the dog to lose interest, before walking slowly away. Don’t try to stroke the dog. Even friendly dogs may not like being touched. Carrying some treats around may help. Don’t hand-feed the

dog. Throw the food away from you and remain still. Keep your eye on the dog and move slowly away when the dog focuses on the food rather than you. If knocked to the ground by a dog, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GET BACK UP. LIE TOTALLY STILL. ROLL YOURSELF INTO A BALL AND STAY THERE. If you keep trying to get back up it will only result in the dog trying to pull you back down again resulting in a vicious attack.

I RECENTLY POPPED in to have a chat with Keith Kemp, co –owner of renamed (Pokeno) Canteen, formerly Pokeno Pies. In order to cater to a wider clientele, Keith and business partner, Steve have enlarged the menu to include: starters and snacks, such as vegetable soup and a roll, beans on toast and toasted tea cakes. If you fancy a baked potato, these come with delicious fillings like: mince and onion,

cheese, ham and coleslaw. Of course the famous pie and mash is still on offer with a choice of peas or baked beans. On the day I tried the chicken and mushroom and my companion the minted lamb. Both came with a healthy helping of mash and our option of peas. The pies were a good size, nice short –crust pastry and the fillings tasty. A tiny bit more seasoning perhaps! Other flavours of the day in-

cluded: steak and ale, beef chorizo and olive and moroccan aubergine. At £4 – this is a credit crunch bargain not to be missed! All pies are locally produced and contain minimal amounts of salt and fat. A great “healthy” pie! If pies are not your thing: you can opt for: sausage and mash, mince and onion and mash or bean stew and mash all at a respectable £3.50 There is also a good selection of teas, coffees, hot chocolate, juices, beer, wine and water and some yummy puddings. Choose from jelly and cream - £1.50, treacle sponge with custard or ice cream -£2.50, apple pie - £2.50. For those munchies, there are flapjacks, ginger bread and muffins. The atmosphere here is really friendly and it is a good, light space to come and dine and people watch as the Winter months start to draw to a close.

Charlie’s Kitchen recipes

Roasted Stuffed Peppers Oh my God! It’s been such a busy day and I’ve got the boys we met on holiday coming over for lunch. I’ve just woken up and it’s already 11.30am! I best raid the fridge and come up with something delicious quick!

INGREDIENTS • 4 large bell peppers (mixed colours, seeded and halved lengthwise) • 3 tomatoes, peeled and coarsely chopped) • 500g lean ground beef mince • 4 slices smoked back bacon (roughly chopped) • • 1 large onion (finely diced) • 150g cooked rice • 1 tablespoon tomato purée • Good shake of Worcestershire sauce • 1 teaspoon sunflower oil • Olive oil • Handful fresh oregano • 200g fresh mozzarella cheese (cut into large chunks) • Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD • Preheat the oven to 200c. • In a large frying pan heat the sunflower oil over a medium heat, add the onions and brown. • Meanwhile brush the peppers inside and out with the olive oil and place in a roasting dish in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the skins start to slightly blacken. • Add the minced beef and brown. • Stir in the tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce and tomatoes, mix well and add the rice. • When the peppers are ready, stuff with the mixture. • Sprinkle over some oregano and top with chunks of mozzarella cheese. • Return to the oven and bake for five minutes until cheese starts to melt. TO SERVE • Serve immediately, two halves per person with a large glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Enjoy!

THE GREAT ENGLISH traditional Sunday Roast lives on at Comptons in Soho, in the upstairs dining room. Comptons, known for its great beer, and friendly and sexy staff, opens its dining room for Sunday Lunch from noon to 4pm. The dining room is set quite elegantly, and the ambience, helped along by chandeliers and lace curtains, makes it that bit more special. It is advised to call ahead and reserve a table and I suggest to plan well ahead to get a window seat. In true tradition the beef is cooked tender and slightly on the rare side, and served with fresh vegetables. There is also a second cut of meat on offer, a variety of desserts, and service with a smile. A bottle of Jacobs Creek Cab Sav reminds me of my days in Oz and great music adds the finishing touch to the atmosphere. All this and change from £40 - impressive.

Starswith Russell Grant 27 Feb - 12 Mar ARIES 21 March - 20 April With a little luck there’s every chance you’ll be spending a lot of your time on your own right now. Recent events have taken their physical and emotional toll on you. The ride on this bumpy road isn’t over yet but these challenges aren’t anything you can’t handle! Time spent in tranquil peace and solitude to recharge your batteries will help build up your strength for whatever happens to come your way during the merry month of March.

TAURUS 21 April - 21 May Expect a busy few days ahead packed with intriguing encounters and fun filled excitement. You will be meeting a lot of people and making new friends. All this socialising may also alter your outlook when you might suddenly decide now is the time for a new image. Your increased magnetism and self confidence will help you push those all important pet projects of yours forward; you are feeling positive and purposeful so things couldn’t be better.

GEMINI 22 May - 21 June Extra costs and expenses are making inroads into your cash reserves. Keep calm and don’t panic! Any problem you’re faced with will never be too big to be resolved even if it takes professional assistance. Soon your anxieties will fade into the distance. The stresses you face aren’t too much for you to handle and are more a question of organisation, so spending some time getting your paperwork and documents in order will soon get you back on course.

?FIFJ:FG<J 9P

CANCER 22 June - 23 July

Mundane matters and everyday concerns are starting to get you down. The start of March might be no different from many times that have gone before. Maybe it’s time to get away from it all. Instead of dreaming of far off places, try to escape and experience them first hand. This would be a great time to let your artistic and creative side take over. Concentrating on something truly inspiring and worthwhile will make you feel more focussed and less restless.

LEO 24 July - 23 August You need to take a careful look at jointly held investments and savings. The time is now right to make a few changes and adjustments to your financial arrangements. If gardening or home improvement projects are something you enjoy, work in these areas ought to be wonderfully fulfilling. You will have more time to yourself than expected and although you’re feeling restless, getting on with creative or organisational activities will keep you focussed and productive.

VIRGO 24 August - 23 September Taking a little time to assess your general situation could set you up and give you a few targets to aim for. The importance of taking a long, hard look at yourself and what you have achieved cannot be underestimated. This will give you renewed impetus and momentum just when you need it most. March is a month to shake off old ideas, let your mind roam around new regions of endeavour and make some changes to your plans for the future.

LIBRA 24 September - 23 October A temporary change in surroundings at work or at home may leave you unsettled. Once you get used to a changing and evolving situation, you might actually find you like it! Having put your mind in gear it will then be difficult to switch off. Your head is brimming with ideas. You will be getting a big buzz from bouncing bright ideas off the people around you leaving them feeling a little bemused but giving you a heightened sense of energised excitement.

THE RAMBERT Dance Company returns to Brighton this month with Eternal Light, a stunning ‘requiem for the living’. With music by acclaimed composer Howard Goodall, this emotionally stirring and uplifiting piece is not to be missed. one80news has a pair of tickets for the Sat 7 Mar performance at the Theatre Royal Brighton. The winner will also recieve an Eternal Light CD. For your chance to win, simply answer the following question. Howard Goodall composed the theme for which TV show? a) Mr and Mrs b) The Brady Bunch c) QI

SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November Accepting new responsibilities is one way of automatically gaining further challenges. The pleasure you get from carrying out your duties successfully ought to solve and fill any gaps in your life. It is equally important not to allow fresh commitments to get on top of you. You could push yourself a little too hard without realising it because you are taking everything just a little too seriously. Chill out and take a little time out to relax.

To enter: 1) Email your answer to info@one80news.co.uk giving your name, address & telephone number. 2) Pop your answer on a postcard with contact details to one80news, 4 Steine Street, Brighton BN2 1TE.

SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December All the work and effort you put in behind the scenes will begin to bear fruit during March. Your activities will be recognised and rewarded. If this involves your job, your promotion prospects will certainly be looking more encouraging. Inventive creativity and romance are favoured towards the middle of March when the more entertaining your off-duty pastimes are the happier you will be, so branch out and try doing something just a little different.

CAPRICORN 22 December - 20 January

This prize is non-transferable and there is no cash alternative. Usual one80news conditions apply (available on request). Closing date for entries is Thur 5 Mar 2009.

It would be more productive to look at your personal limitations and those areas which need a little work to help them measure up to your own expectations. A period of introspective change can help you forge more fruitful relationships and give you a whole fresh insight into your own personal outlook on life.

AQUARIUS 21 January - 19 February Get your priorities right and make it your aim to use your energy in as positive a way as possible. It would be a very good idea to clear your desk of any outstanding paperwork, pay bills and reply to letters or emails that have been gathering dust. Your thoughts will be turning to cash and career concerns later in the month making it a propitious time to look around for wiser ways to manage your money or even go for a promotion.
