ow do you say thank you for happiness, love or good fortune? You say it by sharing what you have, right? As we celebrate five years in business, we want to say thank you - to our families, friends and most importantly, our business clients who have supported us and cheered on our efforts of bringing the nonprofit community to light in Northwest Arkansas.
As we give, we get. And that’s the principle we founded 3W Magazine on. Not only do we strive to inspire a culture of giving, we’ve made it our mission to financially give to local charities each year. To date, we’ve given more than $32,631 to some 25 nonprofit organizations in Northwest Arkansas. We’ve enjoyed serving on planning committees, giving circles and simply brainstorming over coffee with local philanthropists who want to do more. With any collaboration comes listening and learning, and our five year celebration has allowed us to do what you’ve all asked – launch another publication. Trés Lifestyle is Northwest Arkansas’ first online-only lifestyle magazine. Our digital magazine has continued to grow and we expect great things for 2013, so check it out at www.treslifestyle.com. Without the support of our community and advertisers, 3W Magazine wouldn’t exist and we wouldn’t be able to give back. Recognition goes far beyond what we could write in this letter. So again, we want to say thank you for supporting our vision and mission of promoting Northwest Arkansas’ thriving philanthropic movement. It has been said that “charity sees the need, not the cause.” We’re convinced giving rejuvenates the good. It revives hearts, releases burdens, restores hope. If you give when you’re asked, perhaps you’ve waited too long. So here’s to another year of doing good and giving back. *Special thanks to Shelby Lynn’s Cake Shoppe in Springdale for making the beautiful cake for us.

Change Your Shoes, Ozark Guidance celebrates third annual shoe sale ou will soon be able to shop for the best shoes and handbags from the premiere closets and boutiques of Northwest Arkansas at the third annual Ozark Guidance Walk a Mile in My Shoes… Sale. For months now, the Ozark Guidance auxiliary has been working with local community partners, service groups and volunteers to collect more than 3,000 pairs of new or almost new shoes and handbags which will be up for grabs at the big sale on Saturday, January 26, held inside Arvest Ballpark. The shoes are symbolic of the journey that individuals experience when dealing with a mental health challenge. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, each year 26 percent of all adults and 20 percent of children will be affected by a mental health challenge. This translates into more than 110,000 adults and 26,000 children in Northwest Arkansas who will be affected by a mental health condition this year. The Walk a Mile in My Shoes… Sale serves as a reminder that you don’t know what a person is going through until you walk a mile in his or her shoes.
“A large majority of the individuals we serve do not have the ability to pay for their much-needed mental health care, so events like Walk a Mile help support care for thousands of Northwest Arkansas residents,” says Tom Petrizzo, Ozark Guidance CEO. “Last year, this event raised more than $60,000 and 100 percent of the proceeds stayed right here in Northwest Arkansas to support men, women, children and families that could not otherwise afford services.” Ozark Guidance will be taking donations of handbags and new or almost new shoes for men, women and children until Wednesday, January 16. Doors open at 8a.m. on Saturday, January 26 at Arvest Ballpark and all items will be sold for $10 each. This year’s co-chairs are Jennifer Irwin of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce and Amiee York of Source Gas. For additional information about the broad array of mental health services that Ozark Guidance provides throughout Benton, Carroll, Madison and Washington Counties, visit www.ozarkguidance.org or call 479.750.2020. Special thanks to this year’s Walk a Mile sponsors (as of press time): Sam’s Club, Arvest Bank, The Naturals, Walker Brothers Insurance, The Chase Family Foundation, Warren’s Shoes, Corazon, Maude Boutique, Ultra, Ghirardelli, 3W Magazine, KNWA, Kid’s Directory, CitiScapes, Celebrate, The Jon Williams Show, Magic 107.9 and 92.1 The Ticket.
As a local nonprofit mental health center, the mission of Ozark Guidance is saving and changing lives by providing compassionate, quality mental health services. Ozark Guidance is the only JCAHO accredited (Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organization) mental health center in Northwest Arkansas. Last year, Ozark Guidance provided services for more than 14,500 people in Northwest Arkansas, including 4,800 children.

WALKING THE RUNWAY
FOR PHILANTHROPY
Fashion for a cause at the inaugural NWA Fashion Week ocal designers and models hit the runways last March all in the name of Fashion for Philanthropy at the first ever Northwest Arkansas Fashion Week. A five-day event, Fashion Week included three days of runway shows from local retailers, community events including Shopping Night Out and a fun-filled Kid’s Day. It was a whirlwind week at the East Square Plaza in Fayetteville—with crowds coming out from all over the area to see what was in store for this much-anticipated event that took Northwest Arkansas by storm. The runway shows kicked off with the Shop Local Show on Wednesday night—a preview of what was in store for the rest of the week. Thursday, Friday and Saturday were busy with shows from local retailers and headliners such as High Heels High Hopes by Maude Boutique featuring Uptown Eyes eyewear and Rock the Runway for Education by Masons. Highlights of the runway shows included Riffraff ’s bright and colorful display with a finale of fun party hats, Savoir-Faire’s classic and fun run through featuring gorgeous headpieces, and of course Lola Boutique’s
Strut for a Mutt which featured sleek and elegant looks with the ultimate accessory— strays on display from the Fayetteville Animal Shelter. Fashion was the name of the game, but philanthropy was the highlight of the week. The first event officially raised an impressive $35,000 for local charities such as 7Hills Homeless Center, American Cancer Society of Northwest Arkansas, Art Amiss, Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter, Restore Humanity, Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas and Spay Arkansas. Other efforts included collecting canned food for the University of Arkansas Food Bank. Northwest Arkansas Fashion Week will be back in action again this spring, with fresh lineups and another action packed week for philanthropy from March 11 through 16 at The Chancellor Hotel in Fayetteville. With a new fundraising goal of $100,000, Fashion Week hopes to continue to give back to area nonprofits. Find out what organizations are involved and purchase tickets at www.nwafw.com.

Run for the Roses
Mark and Dijuana Lewis, Suzy and Chuck Fehlig
he horses may have been racing in Kentucky, but supporters of JDRF channeled Churchill Downs on May 5, 2012 at the Run for the Roses Hope Gala presented by The Hershey Company. Horton Farms in Bentonville was decked out with more than 2,000 roses for this Kentucky Derby-themed fete, which kicked off with a VIP bourbon and chocolate tasting sponsored by Diageo and The Hershey Company. Horton Farms was full of energy as the 470 attendees sipped signature mint juleps and watched the exciting Derby live on the big screen. A unique cupcake raffle sponsored by Underwood’s Fine Jewelers raised $5,000, while guests perused the silent auction. Later in the evening, the live auction raised additional funds through big-ticket items such as a VIP trip to the I Heart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas and a hunting trip to Ted Turner’s Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico. The crowd dined on a southern-inspired menu while JDRF supporter Hank Henderson, President and CEO of America’s Car-Mart, whose daughter has type 1 diabetes was honored for being a supporter of JDRF. Javier Blanco, Senior Director of Supply Chain Operations at Walmart and Board Member of JDRF, encouraged supporters to participate in the “auctioning off the cure,” which raised $50,000 to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes.

“Circle of Life Hospice was a blessing, not only for my dad who was on his final journey on this earth, but for me, his daughter. Circle of Life gave him the wonderful gift of dying in comfort and peace and with dignity. It gave me an incredibly peaceful and comfortable setting in which to let him go. One cannot put a value on what patients and their families receive from this caring group who make up Circle of Life, and if offered a million dollars to come up with one negative about our experience, I would not be able to come up with a single thing. Circle of Life Hospice, and only Circle of Life, is where I want to be on my final journey because I truly believe they have perfected the art of dying with grace, comfort and dignity, and I want them to be there for my family as they were for me.” —Sarah Kendall, daughter of Circle of Life Hospice patient
Miller McNeil Woodruff was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) at just three weeks old and passed away in the arms of his mother, Meredith Woodruff 87 days after the first time she held him. Today, you can see the I’m With Miller signs on window decals on the back of cars, on hats, bracelets, and much more. The five-peak logo comes from Miller’s own monogram MWM. Miller’s parents, Meredith and Patrick, have used this momentum to start The Miller McNeil Woodruff Foundation which works hard to raise awareness, fund research and offer support to other families who are faced with SMA.
“All are welcome,” proclaimed The Jones Center founder, the late Bernice Jones, when she opened The Jones Center in 1995. Built from the original Jones Truck lines terminal facility, one of the country’s largest and most successful transportation companies owned by Bernice and her husband Harvey, The Jones Center was Bernice’s legacy gift to Northwest Arkansas to honor forever what the couple worked to achieve throughout their lifetime—an example of selflessness and giving. Today, all are still welcome at The Jones Center, which provides recreational, educational, health and community programs as well as various services to individuals and families in the region.
The NorthWest Arkansas Community College Foundation is a separate nonprofit organization that serves as the philanthropic arm of the NorthWest Arkansas Community College. Through scholarship, academic and capital support, the Foundation enhances the quality of teaching and student life at the College. A 30-member regional Board of Directors governs the Foundation and is composed of representatives from business and community leaders, as well as alumni whose primary goal is to serve the community of NWACC. The NWACC Foundation is committed to helping the college become a high-performing institution that consistently meets and exceeds the needs and expectations of the community it serves.

BEST CIVIC ORGANIZATION
Willard & Pat Walker Charitable Foundation Willard and Pat Walker believed in giving back to their community and state. They also believed that without one’s health and a good education, it is virtually impossible to reach full potential in life. The family’s foundation continues to support those core beliefs today. The Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation, Inc. exists to honor the legacy of its founders through charitable giving and to promote the virtues of integrity and generosity, as well as the conservative values which characterized their lives. To fulfill this purpose, the foundation is dedicated to supporting a wide range of philanthropic and charitable causes, giving preference to non-profit organizations, which promote healthcare, education, and humanitarian causes within the states of Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. The Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation has provided funding assistance to approximately 225 organizations since its inception through yearly grants and funding for organizations that are meeting specific needs within the community.
BEST HUMAN NEEDS ORGANIZATION
BEST ORGANIZATION FOR ANIMALS
Humane Society of the Ozarks In 1946, a group of citizens committed to promoting the caring treatment of animals founded the Fayetteville Humane Society. The group worked successfully to establish humane animal control practices, implement a pet adoption program, and provide direction and funding for the city’s first animal shelter. In 1989, the name changed to Humane Society of the Ozarks to better reflect the group’s expanded, regional service area. Through its “Tails of Love” series of coffee table books, HSO raises funds for its vital programs. The beautiful limited-edition books showcase pets (and their people) from throughout Northwest Arkansas and also feature heartwarming stories of HSO-rescued animals. The book, eagerly anticipated by animal lovers each year, has become HSO’s most successful fundraiser. The latest edition, “Tails of Love” Volume 3, is now available for $25 at local veterinarians, Collier Drug Stores, Dog Party USA, Dog Watch, French Quarters, Lighting Emporium, Something Urban, Brashears, So Inviting, Select Consignments and Foghorns. It is also available at the HSO office, 1020 South One Mile Road in Fayetteville and at the HSO website, www.hsozarks.org.
Northwest Arkansas Food Bank and United Way of Northwest Arkansas It’s fitting that in a category where it’s hard to pick a winner, the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank and United Way of Northwest Arkansas tied for best Human Needs Organization. These two organizations serve Northwest Arkansas in different ways, but each make a profound effect on many people in the area. The Northwest Arkansas Food Bank Serves over 150,000 people annually in Benton, Washington, Madison and Carroll counties in their mission to nourish the community by feeding hungry people. United Way of Northwest Arkansas’ mission is to build a stronger Northwest Arkansas by identifying needs around education, income and health, and then mobilizing resources to effectively meet them. By working together with over 65 partner agencies, United Way of Northwest Arkansas uses a strategic approach to meet the needs of our community. Both the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank and United Way of Northwest Arkansas help to shine a light on issues in our community and work towards a better Northwest Arkansas.

Will Golf 4 Kids Benefiting the Arkansas Children’s Hospital
This unique event got its start as the Celebrity Waiter Event in 1998. Looking to freshen up the event two years ago, the co-sponsoring organizations decided to play on the colors of Alpha Kappa Alpha, which are pink and green, and decided on Emerald City—Where Everyone Is A Celebrity. This premier event draws a crowd and each attendee is treated like royalty. Guests are welcomed with a walk on the green carpet, are invited to bid on amazing auction items in the silent and live auctions, as well as enjoy live music and dancing. The funds raised from Emerald City are used for scholarships for high school, graduate and professional school students. Alpha Kappa Alpha and The Tea Rose Foundation have awarded more than $160,000 to over 100 students in the Northwest Arkansas and River Valley areas.
Will Golf 4 Kids is an annual golf tournament held for the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in conjunction with the Color of Hope Charity Gala. More than 1,100 participants took over the Kingswood and Berksdale Golf Courses in Bella Vista for this two-day tournament on August 9 and 10, 2012. Started in 1993 by Walmart, the tournament was turned over to the supplier community in 1998. In 2012, the third floor of the hospital’s new South Wing addition was named the Will Golf 4 Kids and Color of Hope Gala Patient Care Floor, in honor of the outstanding support from these events.

Attendees of the Color of Hope Gala are no stranger to the Lori and Steve Collins array of colors that take over every year, and last year they saw green. More than 1,200 men and women of Northwest Arkansas flooded the John Q. Hammons Center on August 10, 2012 in a sea of greens to support the fifth annual event benefiting Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The event was presented by MARS and SC Johnson. Color of Hope is in its fifth year of giving back, but the real party was for Arkansas Children’s Hospital, which celebrated its 100-year birthday in 2012. Each year, the Color of Hope Gala and Will Golf 4 Kids work hard to raise funds to continue this excellence. This year, the combined events raised $835,000 to support the hospital’s mission. The gala kicked off as guests perused the silent auction and sipped on the signature pale green Hopetini—a specialty martini sponsored by Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
Dinner followed, and to help commemorate the remarkable centennial birthday of the hospital guests enjoyed mini birthday cakes for dessert.

The live auction was quite a show— as guests enjoyed bidding wars over items such as a Country Music Award Show VIP Experience and the popular trip to the Super Bowl in New Orleans. After the program, the crowd moved to the dance floor where the Memphis Soul Revue entertained until late into the evening. If you’re green with envy from missing out on all the fun, make plans to attend the 2013 event on August 23 where tangerine will be the celebratory color.

TEAM BREAK THE CYCLE Different circumstances lead Chip Gibbons, Lori O’Connor, Mike Brady and Randy Jackson to get on a bike for the first time. But this year they’re all riding for one purpose, the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter. As Team Break the Cycle, these four individuals are training to participate in the annual Race Across America (RAAM), a bicycle race that spans from Oceanside, Calif., to Annapolis, Md. The seven-day race kicks off on June 15, where the team will race 24-hours a day and help do their part to break the cycle of child abuse.
s n o b b i g p i h c
mike brady or l o r i o ’ co n n
so n k c a j y d n a r
It all started as the brainchild of Mike and Chip who have been riding together for more than five years. Together they’ve been dreaming of participating in RAAM, the pinnacle of cycling events, for about three years. Open to both amateur and professional cyclists, RAAM offers solo and relay team racing in two-, fourand eight-person teams. The course travels 3,000 miles across 12 states and climbs over 170,000 vertical feet. In its 32-year history, less than 200 solo and tandem racers have officially finished the solo RAAM. “That is fewer than have summited Everest,” Chip explains.
On top of fundraising, the team has been busy since training day and night for the race—sometimes logging more than 1,000 miles a month on their bikes. They hold each other accountable for their training through an online mileage tracker, and have gone on long distance rides together to prepare for the event. Together, the team hit close to 40,000 miles of cycling in 2012 alone. “It’s amazing what a big, hairy audacious goal will do for your commitment level,” Randy explains.
With a goal of raising $150,000 for the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter, Team Break the Cycle is looking for sponsors and individuals to support their efforts. You can follow their journey and find out more about becoming involved by visiting www.teambreakthecycle.org. Keep an eye out for updates about their journey across the country, and be sure to follow along in June to cheer on this homegrown team, cycling for a cause. Undaunted by this fact, the pair decided to make their dream a reality. Fellow riders Lori and Randy were eager to get involved. Each member of the team has been cycling for less than 10 years (Randy, the newest rider, started biking just two years ago) and none of them have ever competed in a bicycling race before. They knew their work was cut out for them in order to prepare for the intensity that RAAM is known to be. But if they were going to put in the time and focus it would take to be actual contenders in RAAM, the group knew it would have to be for a good cause. Most of the group met through their own children—different sports teams and acquaintances lead them together to a shared common bond for an organization that helps and supports other children in need. The Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter, a nonprofit organization that provides 24-hour emergency residential care to children who are victims of family violence, neglect, and physical and sexual abuse, is a cause that has united these four individuals to train countless hours and make personal sacrifices to participate in a bicycle race many have never heard of. But it’s their end goal of raising $150,000 for the Shelter that keeps the team motivated and on track to not only participate in this oncein-a-lifetime event, but try their hardest to cross the finish line first. Since November 2011, the four members of Team Break the Cycle have been training and scheming—training for the miles ahead of them over the course of RAAM, and scheming up ways to raise funds for the abused and neglected children the Shelter serves. With their goal of raising $150,000 for the Shelter, the team hit the pavement to garner support from local individuals and businesses, and raise awareness for their cause and the upcoming race. As of December 1, 2012, the team had raised $127,685 of its goal.
As the race draws closer on June 15, the team will be focusing on training for the unusual schedule most teams utilize during RAAM. Because they are competing 24 hours a day, team members will work as pairs in shifts of six hours—riding for 30 minutes at a time during the day and in hour splits during the night. Logistics will be key in making this the ride of their life, as sleeping, eating and riding are all important elements the team must take into account as it prepares in the coming months. To help with the logistics of RAAM, the team brought on Krista Khone as their Crew Chief. Krista is responsible for making sure the seven days run smoothly for the riders, and insuring that the team stays on course and at pace to beat its competition to Annapolis. In addition, the team will also travel with up to 13 other crewmembers including an E.M.T. and a massage therapist. They will travel in a motor home and two vehicles will follow the drivers down the course. Most cyclists dream about crossing the finish line of RAAM, but few will ever have the opportunity. As they continue training for this feat, Team Break the Cycle has a few goals in mind. “I want to laugh every day,” Chip shares. Lori continues, “We want to like each other at the end [of the race].” But most importantly, the team hopes to start a yearly event of racing across America for the kids in need at the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter. Mike explains, “Hopefully when we get to Annapolis, our team’s feeling is . . . ‘I can’t wait to do that again.’” Whether or not the same four riders are on the bikes next year, these four teammates have begun a new tradition for local riders and bicycling enthusiasts— to come together for the ride of their lives to help break the cycle of child abuse in our community.

RUTH’S CHRIS Steak House, Rogers
celebrates
When Ruth’s Chris Steak House opened its doors in Rogers five years ago, as the restaurant’s first franchise in the state, owners Barry Pelts, Andy Woodman, Billy Orgel and the late David Cohn were looking for a way to connect with the local community. As a new member of this philanthropic community, it was only natural for the restaurant to partner with the local nonprofits and do their part in giving back. According to Kris Dean, Sales and Event Manager at the Rogers location, partnering with the local nonprofits was a natural fit for the owners and Ruth’s Chris as well. “[Giving back] is a big part of the Ruth’s Chris culture,” Dean explains. In the time since Ruth’s Chris opened in Rogers on November 12, 2007, the restaurant has continued its generosity through different avenues. In the five short years of its existence, the restaurant has already contributed more than $500,000 to local nonprofits and community organizations. From gift card donations, celebrity bartending nights and auctioning dinners with Chef A.J. Graf, there are a multitude of little ways the restaurant makes donations to various organizations in the area “They have their big events, but it’s fun to do the little supplemental things as well,” explains Dean.
More than
$500,000
has been donated to the local community from this generous steakhouse known for its good food and fine service.
Ruth’s Chris has also written checks for organizations close to its heart, gotten involved with local events such as the Color of Hope Charity Gala where the restaurant donates the signature Hopetini each year, and the restaurant has also lead major fundraising drives as well. When the late co-owner David Cohn was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2010, the other owners decided the restaurant was going to raise $50,000 for the local chapter of the ALS Association. Shortly after the restaurant met its goal, Cohn passed away from the disease, but support of the ALS Association has not stopped since. “ALS is a cause that will always be close to our hearts,” shares Dean. For the five weeks leading up to their five-year anniversary on November 12, 2012, Ruth’s Chris partnered with five different organizations each week. Arts Center of the Ozarks, Spay Arkansas, Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter, ALS Association of Northwest Arkansas and SA Concepts were each chosen for the work each organization does in the Northwest Arkansas area. During their week, the organizations were encouraged to draw in supporters to the restaurant, with 20 percent of their total bill donated to the nonprofit. They also had the opportunity to host a bar night, where 10 to 15 percent of the lounge sales went back to the organization as well. At the fifth anniversary celebration Ruth’s Chris Rogers proudly presented each organization with their donation from the restaurant—an apt way to commemorate five years of what the local steakhouse has proudly done since its start. For this distinguished restaurant, the past five years have allowed them to show the Northwest Arkansas community not only the high-quality food and topnotch service the franchise is known for, but also make its mark on the legacy of the philanthropic spirit found here. The tradition of excellent food, friendly service and generosity has been born at Ruth’s Chris Steak House Rogers, and we look forward to watching it continue to flourish in the years to come. As Youth Bridge looks forward to its 50th anniversary in 2013, the organization can take a proud look back at its history and an optimistic look ahead at the future. Youth Bridge has made a positive difference in the lives of so many boys and girls who have overcome their emotional challenges and addictions to become successful individuals with accomplished lives and solid families. These many success stories are the products of financial and human investments, as well as the rewards that Youth Bridge seeks in this industry. Youth Bridge asks their benefactors: What is a life worth? What kind of financial investment or personal sacrifice are you willing to make to ensure that a child is given a second chance and for that child to receive the love, respect and help they need? It is a question Youth Bridge answers each day by never turning away a child in need, and by making sure all of the boys and girls entrusted in its care receive the best, most professional counseling and caring programs possible. Youth Bridge’s services and dedication to youth are not only its mission, but also its collective passion. These children are the responsibility of Youth Bridge and the organization takes that responsibility very seriously. There is no typical Youth Bridge client. They come from all types of family situations and social economic levels. They can be a child’s best friend, a neighbor’s son or daughter, or a relative. They do have three things in common: They are young, often neglected and in need of hope. Many times, Youth Bridge is the only agency standing between a child sentenced to spending their life in the criminal justice system and a second chance to rebuild that life into becoming a productive and valuable member of society. If not for Youth Bridge, thousands of area youths would be forever lost in the darkness and end up throwing their lives away as victims of poverty, crime and ignorance.
This year has been a challenge for the organization with constant program cuts, operational and clinical cost increases, larger than normal employee turnover, and new and more complex Medicaid requirements. Youth Bridge continues to work hard to stretch human and financial resources, and to look for more creative ways to reach more youth. Youth Bridge has been blessed over the years with a caring and generous community that appreciates and respects the work it does for area youth. Without the financial, volunteer and in-kind support of many friends and partners, Youth Bridge would not be able to serve area youth today. There are so many ways to help Youth Bridge—from volunteering, to in-kind donations, to event sponsorships, to introductions to corporate giving representatives, or just championing the cause. No gift is too small and all gifts are appreciated. Children are the community’s greatest asset and it is Youth Bridge’s mission to help those at-risk youth by providing emergency shelter, clinical assistance and outreach services. Help Youth Bridge complete its mission by becoming a partner of the organization. For more information on the many ways to help Youth Bridge, please visit www.youthbridge.com or call 479.575.9471.

makes big impact through
Leadership, Sponsorship, Volunteerism With a company motto of Nourishing Lives, General Mills not only works to provide breakthrough ideas and financial resources to community nonprofits, but also employs first-rate people to fulfill this mission. Focusing on hunger and nutrition wellness, education, arts and culture and family services—you’ll find General Mills making an impact through leadership, event sponsorship and volunteerism. Through their involvement with local nonprofits, the company’s leadership team is paving the way. General Mills Director Alex Cornett serves on The Jones Center’s Development Council, Director Kurt Johnston sits on the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County’s Programming Committee and Director Mary Zettle spends time serving on the local Susan G. Komen Board of Directors. Vice President Scott Tassani has served as the president of the Board of Directors for the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter for three years and recently joined the Board of Directors for the Walton Arts Center. These organizations have also benefited from General Mills’ generosity through event sponsorships. The Jones Center Golf Outing presented by General Mills, brings out more than 40 teams to Springdale Country Club each year while hosting a sell-out crowd for lunch and raising more than $100,000 for the center. Key Account Manager Ron Brophy served as the chair of The Jones Center Golf Outing and has worked tirelessly to help grow the event.

“We are truly grateful for the strong partnership we’ve developed with the General Mills team through the years,” says Kelly Kemp-McLintock, Chief Advancement Officer for The Jones Center. “Not only does General Mills provide important corporate support to The Jones Center, their local team members get involved with our organization and share their time and talents.” The Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter has also been an important partner of General Mills. Thanks to General Mills and
Walmart, attendees for the shelter’s annual Starlight Gala were entertained by superstar country band Rascal Flatts in the spring of 2012. The Children’s Shelter’s third annual Tailgate for the Kids (a football-themed Razorback game-day party) also scored big by raising $137,000 to help abused and neglected children last year. General Mills’ team members Mark Mast and Chaney Youngblood have served on the shelter’s planning committees for both of these events. The newly named “General Mills Center for School Success” at the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County opened just last year. General Mills’ generous donation sponsored four of the club’s programs including the “Be Great Graduate” mentoring program. “We’re so appreciative to have this financial help because the average graduation rate for youth served by the club is 68 percent,” says Sabrina Rampy, Director of Community Relations at the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County. Women are making giving decisions that are transforming the philanthropic landscape—and General Mills’ Director Mary Zettle is no exception. Zettle and her team have volunteered at the Children’s Shelter watering trees and washing cars. Zettle’s team has also spent time building a playground for the Boys & Girls Club and serving Yoplait yogurt at Komen’s Race for the Cure.
Zettle says, “We believe that donating time from our work day to serve our community partners not only personally strengthens and develops relationships within our office, but also furthers our corporate mission of Nourishing Lives in Northwest Arkansas.” While there’s no shortage of great causes to support in Northwest Arkansas, the General Mills team believes they have the responsibility to lead by example, strategically sponsor events and volunteer their time. Clearly, by leveraging resources and exercising leadership to achieve a common goal, anything is possible.
