GOING THE MARS WAY

For more than 100 years, Mars associates have been practicing the art of science of making products and services that consumers love. We have a healthy dissatisfaction with the status quo and therefore are constantly evolving and growing. The Five Principles are the heart of everything we do. Each one of our principles — Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom — inspires us to do our best. We think beyond our products, services and our bottom line. We want to touch as many lives as we can with our work. We’re humbled by our ability to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of people and their pets. We take pride in supporting many organizations in the community, including the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter. More than 136,000 people in Northwest Arkansas are affected by violence. Building a peaceful community takes a community effort.

A LETTER FROM THE

e are more than ready to ring in 2017. As we’ve reached nine years (a milestone for any small business) there’s so much to celebrate, yet a lot to reflect on. We’ve learned a lot about gratitude and giving over the years. And if we’re really honest, being a small business owner is hard. The trials and errors of finding what works in business is quite a task. Top that with being a wife and mom and we could write a book on female empowerment. Here’s to those who get it and support our efforts in trying to do it all. {The social life in Northwest Arkansas can be exhausting, can’t it?}

We’ve gained new friends and client relationships, and many clients are now close friends. Without your support and a big community cheerleading squad, 3W Magazine would not be possible. We’re so grateful to everyone who continues to be on team #3wmag. Moving forward, we’re getting back to our roots. We’ve done away with our digital magazine to focus on our original mission of 3W Magazine – helping the nonprofits and local businesses plan their giving by providing a guide (and central location) for event dates. We’re devoting our time to this print publication and developing meaningful relationships. You can find 3W Magazine on our website, and you’ll also find a current, detailed list of all the nonprofit events happening in Northwest Arkansas. {Be sure to sign up for our monthly newsletter to stay in the loop.} We founded 3W Magazine because getting involved and helping others is something that’s close to our hearts. It’s part of who we are. And to us, being authentic means soul searching and sharing more personal experiences. You can read more of what’s going on with us at thegoldbubble.com. From the socialites and volunteers to large corporations and anonymous donors, it’s everyone who gives back that makes Northwest Arkansas an amazing place to live. We hope to see you all out and about. To those we haven’t met yet, introduce yourselves next time you’re at a fundraiser. Let’s raise a glass together in support of a great cause.

AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION’S KISS A PIG GALA LARGE BUSINESS CATEGORY WINNER STEVE PAGLUICA KISSING THE PIG

THE NEW TRENDS IN GIVING (AND THOSE WHO ARE GETTING IT RIGHT) rom black-tie galas to wearing boots in a barn and donning a mask for a Mardi-Gras themed event, there’s no shortage of ways to support your favorite charity. With so many parties to choose from, the nonprofits in Northwest Arkansas have had to get creative with fundraising. The biggest trend we’ve seen is having a team of community leaders raise money for the nonprofit organization itself – helping the local team do its tough job of raising awareness and funds for its good cause. We think this genius trend really started with the American Diabetes Association’s Kiss A Pig gala, which will celebrate 15 years in 2017. The ADA asks anywhere from 10 to 20 local professionals to be Kiss A Pig candidates who all compete to raise money. Whoever raises the most money wins and earns the right to kiss the pig and thank it for being the world’s first source of insulin for diabetic patients. Other organizations who enlist community leaders to compete in raising funds include the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with its Weekend with the Finest: Golf This Way golf tournament and Walk This Way fashion show – a two-day event that starts with golf and ends with a party and fashion show featuring food, wine, auction items and live music. Some 30 honorees who exemplify leadership qualities and are active in volunteer roles are chosen to help raise awareness and funds for the nonprofit during this fundraising campaign. Hope Cancer Resources’ Gentlemen of Distinction fashion show recruits area businessmen to participate in an all-guys fashion show featuring the latest trends from local retailer By Request. While on the catwalk during the event, these men get to raise extra money by inviting their friends to throw money on the stage all in good, clean fun.

Kendrick Fincher Hydration Foundation for Life puts its own spin on A Cool Summer Homecoming Gala where the winners are crowned homecoming king and queen depending on who raises the most money. And last but not least participating in this fundraising trend is Susan G. Komen Ozark who recruits about 10 to 12 corporate and community leaders as representatives in the fight against breast cancer. During this six-week campaign, these “Big Wigs” are asked to raise or give a minimum of $1,000, which will be used to support research, all while wearing a huge hot pink wig. It’s clear that when it comes to raising money in Northwest Arkansas, nonprofits have to get creative. One charity that has managed to capture audiences in a unique way includes Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkoma. At its annual Red Shoe Soiree, all the partygoers wear red shoes but the thing we love the most about this event are the auction items. Ronald McDonald forgoes live auction items for a more limited selection of high-end, silent auction items like a chef-prepared in-home dinner for 10 people by Chef Thomas Wenrich of Tyson Foods. The dinner included a double magnum (three-liter) bottle of Trivento Argentina Malbec wine. At the Red Shoe Soiree – guests could also bid on a chauffeured California wine experience for two that included four-day, three-night deluxe accommodations at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, wine upon arrival, six hour private wine tour, daily breakfast and roundtrip airfare. Other auction items included a design package to work with interior designer Jesse Vines, who designed the accommodations for both Ronald McDonald family rooms at Mercy Hospital and Washington Regional; four tickets to a Kansas City Royals game with hotel accommodations; and beautiful, custom-made necklaces from local business Red Bird Jewelry, which designs fabulous pieces from vintage materials that cannot be purchased anywhere, except in person.

Getting what you want is not nearly as important as giving what you have. - Tom Krause

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF ARKOMA RED SHOE SOIREE

Other organizations that are getting it right include Mercy Health System and the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter. If you attend either Mercy’s O’Night Divine Charity Ball or the shelter’s Starlight Gala, you’ll notice both charities have done away with silent auction items in lieu of only a few live auction items. Both nonprofits also feature top-tier entertainment – something that started with Mercy years ago and has become an expectation in our local community. Mercy has set the bar with being one of the only black-tie events and changing the event stage set-up for its entertainment. We love a good theme. You just can’t go wrong. Years ago, when the chair of Walton Arts Center’s Masquerade Ball came to us looking for fresh, new ideas (we charge for that information these days!) we suggested a themed event which they continue to carry out today with the Masquerade Ball (masks are required at the door) and the ticket price has become one of the most coveted in Northwest Arkansas at $450 each.

BENTONVILLE FILM FESTIVAL HAUNTED HALLOWEEN COURTNEY LAWLESS AND BROCK SHORT

JUNIOR AUXILIARY OF ROGERS-BENTONVILLE A NIGHT AT THE SPEAKEASY SARAH OGLESBY, MARISSA KARGAS, MITUN BALASEKARAN AND KIM LEMNA

Other nonprofits who host a fun, themed event include Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s Color of Hope; the Junior Auxiliary of Rogers-Bentonville’s roaring ‘20s-themed A Night at the Speakeasy fundraiser; and last year’s Bentonville Film Festival’s Haunted Halloween party was over-the-top. Last but not least, we can’t leave out our buddy Mark Mast. He has raised thousands for Young Life by hosting his own golf marathon and playing 100 holes of golf in one day. Every summer for the last eight years, Mark has rallied his friends to help play 100 holes of golf (last year he did it in 13 hours) and he gets donation incentives for every birdie, hole in one, or crazy dance he does on the golf course. In 2009 he raised $3,347 for Young Life. Last year, his goal was $25,000, and he raised nearly $35,000. The last trend in giving is with the Dickey Ray Club. Our good friend Dick Trammel has been helping charities raise money in a matter of minutes for decades … and when he gets on stage, people give. In the last 10 years, he’s helped raise more than $1 million – and that’s just for Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas.

KENDRICK FINCHER HYDRATION FOR LIFE A COOL SUMMER HOMECOMING GALA ALEX AHMAD, SHEA NUCKOLS, HOMECOMING QUEEN BRANDI MCKINNEY, ASHLEY BATCHELOR AND ANDREA ALBRIGHT

With more than 2,750 nonprofit organizations in Benton and Washington counties, helping others is a way of life in Northwest Arkansas. No matter what the event or fundraiser, local residents are ready and willing to give back. It’s safe to say, when it comes to being passionate about a cause, you won’t find a more dedicated community anywhere … no matter what the trends are.

WOMEN WITH A MISSION DAY OF

I

t only takes one woman to make a difference, but when you have a group of women passionate about a cause, the impact is much greater. Through pooled resources and collaboration, The Women With A Mission giving society seeks to improve health care in Northwest Arkansas through Mercy Hospital. The society brings together women from diverse backgrounds with a common goal of making a difference through the power of giving together.

More than 200 women gathered for the inaugural Mercy Health Foundation’s Day of Inspiration event October 25 and 26. Keynote speakers Barbara Pierce Bush and twin sister Jenna Bush Hager interviewed each other at Crystal Bridges and told stories of their lives as the granddaughters and daughters of the Bush presidencies, and tales of their work today with the nonprofits UNICEF and Global Health Corps. Guests also heard from Rachel Lozano, a three-time survivor of Askin’s tumor of the spinal cord and international inspirational speaker. One of the highlights of the event was a panel discussion moderated by Neile Jones. Top Walmart executives Karen Roberts, Karen Stuckey, Gisel Ruiz, and Jacqui Canney spoke on being working women and moms in today’s culture.

4

The Northwest Arkansas giving society honors Susan Barrett, former president and CEO of Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas. Susan’s visionary leadership played a significant role in Mercy’s new campus. 3W Magazine co-founders Kasie Yokley and Leslie Zanoff are proud to be a part of Women With A Mission’s steering committee.

“Knowing that Mercy Health System never turns away a patient regardless of his or her ability to pay makes being a part of Women With A Mission close to our hearts,” say Yokley and Zanoff. The 3W ladies, along with Martha Bergant, make up the tri-chairs of the giving circle which was founded in 2009. Members contribute $1,000 annually to help with additional health care needs like equipment and services for women and children. Women With A Mission members attend two educational luncheons featuring health care trends and topics and two social events per year. Today, more than 80 members (and growing) have donated $345,000 to support several needs at Mercy, including a surgical table for cesarean deliveries; a breast ultrasound system; operational expenses for the Ronald McDonald Family Room; and an iSTAT that enables bedside blood testing, allowing clinicians to make treatment decisions sooner.

MERCY HEALTH FOUNDATION NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

CHARITY BALL OH NIGHT DIVINE! More than 1,500 guests (a record attendance) helped to surpass $1 million on Dec. 3, 2016, at the 23rd annual Mercy Health Foundation Northwest Arkansas Charity Ball at John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers. This was the largest amount ever raised, and funds will go toward local projects and charitable care in Northwest Arkansas. The event was presented by Walmart/Sam’s Club and the Lee and Linda Scott Family. Karen and Clark Ellison

Arist and MaryBeth Mastorides

The evening started with a VIP reception where the Mercy Foundation presented awards to Vista Productions, the Pete Esch Family and Greg Blair. A social hour followed the reception. Country music duo Dan + Shay performed, and throughout the evening told personal stories in between songs making the audience love them even more. The singer-songwriters have released two albums which produced three Top 40 singles, from their albums Where It All Began and Obsessed. During a delicious filet dinner provided by Tyson Foods, the duo ended the concert with an amazing rendition of “O Holy Night.” Guests also bid on several live auction items, raising more than $66,000. Next up was the St. Louis Cardinals suite package coming in at $11,000. However, this was also offered to the second-highest bidder for the same cost, selling two suite deals. Dick Trammel took to the stage for the Dickey Ray Club, which raises money for area causes. Nearly 320 guests made donations at Charity Ball – making it the most donations the hospital has ever received at the event. The Dickey Ray Club raised $70,000 in minutes and went toward supporting the women and children’s unit at Mercy Northwest Arkansas. With this support, Mercy will be able to provide technologically advanced care of mother and unborn baby with Fetal Monitors and Omni/Giraffe Infant Warmers, allowing physicians and nurses to help all populations of mothers, healthy newborns and NICU babies. The event featured navy and gold colors throughout the space and a new layout with a stage and big screens in the shape of a triangle. Shirley’s Flowers provided beautiful centerpieces and Anheuser-Busch donated Stella chalice glasses for guests to personalize. The evening closed with the sold-out After Glow party hosted by New Creature with music provided by DJ Kirby.

Clark Ellison, regional vice president for Mercy Health Foundation, says the greatest gift of his job is seeing the impact of the dollars that come in and stay in Northwest Arkansas. “I see how it impacts our patients and their families,” Ellison says. “To actually see that benefit and to know that we’re helping someone else, I think is the biggest joy of all.”

he Rogers Noon Rotary awarded the Dick Daniel Distinguished Citizen Award to Dick Trammel on Aug. 2, 2016, during a luncheon at the John Q. Hammons Center. Dick Daniel is a pioneer (and former CEO) of Daisy Manufacturing, known for its air rifles and BB guns, including the legendary Red Ryder. 1

The Dick Daniel Distinguished Citizen award recognizes and honors individuals who strive toward the highest level of community involvement and influence. It’s also a dedication of the time and energy spent on making the community a better place.

“Rogers Rotary Club is extremely gratified for the years of service Dick has given to Rotary, to Rogers and to the entire Northwest Arkansas community,” said Paul Allard, president of the Rogers Noon Rotary Club.

5

For those of us lucky enough to know Dick Trammel, we couldn’t agree more. In fact, in honor of his service to the Northwest Arkansas community, Rogers Mayor Greg Hines proclaimed Aug. 2 to now be known as “Dick Trammel Appreciation Day.” With more than 600 people in attendance to celebrate Trammel’s accomplishments, more than $50,000 was donated to funding the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Mercy Hospital. Rotary redirects proceeds of the Dick Daniel award luncheon to the honoree’s charity of choice. Trammel, a Mercy foundation board member, has raised over $1 million in 10 years on behalf of Mercy. “It’s fitting that this gift comes at the beginning of our community presence plan capital campaign for our upcoming expansion of the Rogers Mercy facility,” said Eric Pianalto, CEO of Mercy Northwest Arkansas.

7

9

10

Trammel has been a Rotarian for 56 years. He’s executive vice president of Arvest Bank in Rogers and also serves as a member of the Arkansas Highway Commission. The Rogers Noon Rotary will celebrate 100 years in 2017. To end the celebratory luncheon, Trammel announced the he and wife Nancy are donating $25,000 to rotary’s scholarship program. 11

hen Coca-Cola had the opportunity to partner with the Bentonville Film Festival, the company was thrilled to say yes. The Coca-Cola Walmart Team quickly realized they not only said yes in support of partnering to champion women and diverse voices in media, but to being a part of one of the most visible platforms for giving in Northwest Arkansas, joining other top sponsor Walmart Stores, Inc.

Coca-Cola and Walmart donated 1,000 tickets to the Bentonville School District in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week so fellow educators could attend the “Darius Rucker and Friends” concert, who performed alongside Arkansas native and NBC’s "The Voice" finalist, Barrett Baber. First Friday on the Bentonville Square drew 10,000 people for the music and special "Ghostbusters" Family Movie Night featuring Hi-C Ecto-coolers and Coca-Cola products. And nearly 10,000 more attended films, panels and special events that week.

The Bentonville Film Festival (BFF) will celebrate its third year May 2-7, 2017. Founded by Academy Award winner Geena Davis and festival cofounder Trevor Drinkwater, BFF is designed to inspire action and bring together decision makers and content creators with the goal of ensuring media represents the world we live in (which is 51 percent women and very diverse.) BFF strives to work with content creators to inspire young minds, because if they can see it, they can be it.

Stuart Kronauge, SVP Brand Marketing, spoke alongside a strong industry panel. The Reel vs. Real Diversity Panel focused on how the media landscape can change to portray diverse cultures, values and perspective to have positive impact. The 90-minute discussion covered topics of hiring practices, personal principles, the importance of women in technology careers, etc. As Co-Chair of Coca-Cola’s Global Women’s Leadership Council, Stuart focused on ways the company combats unconscious bias within the company and through its brands.

BFF is the only film competition in the world that offers guaranteed distribution to its winning films in partnership with AMC theaters, television partnerships STARZ and LIFETIME and digital and retail home entertainment distribution through a partnership with Walmart. Empowering more women globally is important to both Walmart and Coca-Cola. Why? Women are responsible for 70 percent of household purchases; they’re the world’s fastest growing economic force; and control more than $20 trillion of global spending.

Coca-Cola is excited to come alongside the Bentonville Film Festival team and partnership companies in 2017 to Share a Coke with Northwest Arkansas again. Needless to say, our community is more inclusive than ever before and Bentonville is ready to host thousands more in our unique town. Our Southern hospitality has no boundaries; all are welcome to sit with us anytime. We can’t wait to share a Coke with you. You’ll find us first in line. For more details, visit bentonvillefilmfestival.com.

The five-day film festival draws thousands for films, panels and special events – rivaling the 46,000 in attendance for Sundance’s annual two-week event. Last year, some 40,000 festivalgoers visited the BFF Sponsor Village featuring Coke’s “Share a Song” experience at the 21c Museum Hotel. In fact, Coca-Cola distributed more than 30,000 icy-cold samples of Cola-Cola, Diet Coke, Coke Zero and Dasani. Not to mention, festivalgoers stood in long lines Pictured from Top (left to right): 1. n event that started with just 10 people donating a few locks of hair in a suite on the 18th green at Pinnacle Country Club, has now grown into one of the largest philanthropic events in Northwest Arkansas.

1

Created by Procter & Gamble, Pantene Beautiful Lengths is a nationwide campaign that collects ponytail donations to create human-hair wigs for cancer patients. Over the last 10 years, this Northwest Arkansas event has continually outgrown space at Pinnacle Country Club, Embassy Suites Hotel and John Q. Hammons Convention Center before landing at the Walmart AMP to accommodate all those wanting to donate their tresses.

On June 20, 2016, hair went flying in the air at the 10th annual Pantene Beautiful Lengths ponytail-cutting event as part of the Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship presented by P&G at the Walmart AMP in Rogers. P&G surpassed its goal of 1,000 ponytails and were able to donate more than 1,300 ponytails. In addition to what was collected at the live cutting event, hundreds of ponytails were donated at satellite cuts within local schools and salons throughout the year.

Mindy Sherwood, vice president of the P&G Walmart team, was joined on stage with her daughter Franki to interview and thank several young girls who were participating in the haircutting. Many of those participants were donating hair in honor or memory of loved ones. Sherwood kicked off the event with the help of LPGA players Cristie Kerr, Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel and Paula Creamer. Pressel, who lost her mother to breast cancer, has raised more than $5 million through the Morgan Pressel Foundation to support the fight again breast cancer. Kerr founded Birdies for Breast Cancer as her mother battled the disease as well.

THE MAKING OF AN AUCTION ITEM: THE THRIVING SOCIAL LIFE OF NORTHWEST ARKANSAS id you know there are more than 2,750 nonprofits in Benton and Washington counties? To say that our community is unique would be an understatement. In fact, because Northwest Arkansas has so many nonprofit organizations, 3W Magazine was created as a directory and way to categorize all the event dates in one location. On any given weekend (ThursdaySaturday night) there are multiple events to attend – it’s the social life in Northwest Arkansas. With such a competitive market and a plethora of wonderful causes to choose from, the expectations for entertainment are high, especially when it comes to live and silent auction items.

may need to be rented. Not many people have enough dishes to serve eight people 13 courses, including wine glasses. Who wants to volunteer to wash dishes for an evening? Over the years, we’ve seen some of the highest bids placed on live auction items like dinner with the Razorback coaches; or dinner and a wine tasting with a local aficionado who has some of the finest wines around; plane tickets to travel to football or basketball games with the Razorback team and coaches; Governor’s Mansion experiences; tickets to a suite at the St. Louis Cardinal’s game; backstage passes to the Country Music Awards; NASCAR pit passes; and when the late Don Tyson was alive, he was so generous to donate his home and yacht in Los Cabos, Mexico for sail-fishing for weeks at a time.

Hosting a successful dinner with a corporate executive chef takes months of planning and sometimes even shipping in equipment so the chef can be as prepared as posssible,” says Linda Phillips, director of development for the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter. “An upscale event like this means renting decor, dishes and sending pictures of the kitchen weeks ahead of time. It’s really a special experience for our donors.

Some of the best auction items that receive the highest bids revolve around travel and experiences, like food and wine with friends. “People want to bid on experiences they can’t buy anywhere else,” says Clark Ellison, Mercy Health Foundation’s Regional Vice President. “Purchasing an elaborate auction item at an event is more personal and specific to each donor.”

For several years, the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter has worked with supplier companies to bring in an executive chef, which can take months of planning and execution. Often times, a corporate chef will want to ship his or her equipment and extravagant cuisine (that cannot be purchased locally) ahead of time. Dishes and décor

Needless to say, Northwest Arkansas is full of givers. Companies and individuals are quick to donate over-the-top items and escapades … and those who give money will spend money to help those in need. We love to give to our charities and we love to experience the good life (usually with close friends in tow), no matter what auction item we purchase.

Last October, The Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter hosted its largest event of the year – Fresh StART – at The Grand at 117 in downtown Rogers. much-needed organization in our area, the shelter is the premier provider of comprehensive domestic violence/sexual assault education and services to victims, second survivors and the broader community. Every day, the nonprofit helps domestic violence victims through emotional, financial, physical and legal challenges.

Honorary chair Steve Bratspies, Chief Merchandising Officer for Walmart US, spoke about the importance of having such a great organization in Northwest Arkansas, and Harvey Millar, team leader of Mars, Inc., said he was happy that his team has become so involved in supporting the shelter. Mars, Inc. was the presenting sponsor of Fresh StART, and the local team also volunteers many hours at the shelter.

6

As the signature fundraising event for the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter, Fresh StART perfectly aligns with the mission and programs of the shelter. Partygoers could bid on more than 32 works of art that were donated by local artists to help raise money for the shelter. In addition, pieces from the shelter residents and outreach clients were showcased and up for grabs. The event raised more than $50,000 that night. Advocates incorporate art as a therapeutic process to help clients (victims), both adult and children, connect with the emotions they have suppressed as a result of the abuse they’ve experienced. Art is a channel for self-identification and for developing self-awareness and a voice. By donating just $25, that provides three safe nights for victims of domestic violence. Earlier in 2016, the shelter was in danger of having to close its doors after 30 years of providing Northwest Arkansas residents a safe place to escape abuse. Thankfully through a grass roots movement, Support Our Shelter, the community came together to raise more than $600,000. A $100,000 challenge grant was met by a generous donation from Jane Hunt Meade and her husband Ben.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

A THRIVING

ARTS COMMUNITY e’re so lucky to have thriving arts programs in Northwest Arkansas, probably because local residents know that cultural equity is key to growing the arts community. Each year, patrons push the boundaries with expectations of improved arts performances and education. Here’s a glimpse of what’s happening. Located in downtown Springdale, Arts Center of the Ozarks (ACO) has a new vision, new executive leadership and new programming, plus, a new logo that we’re in love with. After reflecting on its 50 years of tradition, the ACO has a renewed purpose to expand and diversify its theater experiences, particularly highlighting directors and volunteer actors. Also, in a strategic move to propel the organization forward, the center has chosen 16 board members and contracted Jenni Taylor Swain as the executive and artistic director to lead Arts Center of the Ozarks into its new future. “Jenni is a cutting-edge arts leader,” says Tareneh Manning, ACO Board President. “She has extensive arts presenting experience, fundraising and participating on a executive team from start-up to a multi-million dollar organization.” In Fayetteville, TheatreSquared has experienced remarkable growth – expanding its audience tenfold in the past five years. TheatreSquared is Northwest Arkansas’ professional regional theatre, offering an intimate live theatre experience for 40,000 patrons each year in its 175-seat space and in schools throughout the state. TheatreSquared was recognized by the American Theatre Wing, founder of the Tony Awards, as one of the nation’s 10 most promising emerging theatres. The theatre is currently in the design phase for a new 50,000 square-foot facility to be completed in 2019. With support from the Walton Family Foundation’s Design Excellence program, TheatreSquared is working with a world-class design team to build on a 0.8-acre site at the corner of West Avenue and Spring Street in downtown Fayetteville. Just down the street from TheatreSquared is the Walton Arts Center – the leader in arts amenities in our community. The Walton Arts Center presents a full season of Broadway shows, children and family programming, world-class dance and variety of arts opportunities that are unparalleled anywhere else in the state. In order to meet the needs of the community and the demands of the industry, Walton Arts Center completed a $23 million expansion and renovation that added 30,000 square feet of space. The Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation gave a $2 million grant to invest in the future of the arts center as well as the new and expanded Walker Atrium that connects to Dickson Street. This particular gift also helped exceed the center’s campaign goal, allowing for additional upgrades for the facility. “The Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation is proud to support growth of the arts in Northwest Arkansas. The Walton Arts Center, TheatreSquared and Arts Center of the Ozarks continue to increase their quality and capacity for great programming,” said Mandy Macke, executive director of the Walker Foundation. "In particular, the Walker Foundation is proud of the most recent support of Walton Arts Center. We are excited to help with this latest project to increase community access to the arts, special events, gatherings and educational programming for years to come. We look forward to seeing families and patrons enjoying their shared experiences in this beautiful new community space.” Sponsored By:

ast October, the 12th annual Sweetest Day was a celebration reminding us that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning. This is especially true to the children who are served at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Benton County. Hosted at the home of Karen and John Scholes, who is a board member, and presented by Kimberly-Clark, this intimate event is one of our favorites.

3

More than 100 guests enjoyed cocktails and dinner by Bonefish Grill poolside at the Scholes’ Pinnacle residence, while bidding on silent and live auction items. Sweetest Day raised nearly $50,000 last year. Every year at this fun gathering, partygoers are happy to be casually dressed and entertained by live music, while raising money to empower children to find their voice and eliminate child abuse.

7

The purpose of the Children’s Advocacy Center is to provide a safe place for child abuse victims and their families to receive comprehensive services from dedicated professional interviewers, nurses, counselors and advocates in a child-friendly atmosphere through a coordinated team approach. The center also provides child abuse prevention, awareness and education to the Northwest Arkansas community. Kimberly-Clark has long supported the Children’s Advocacy Center and the company’s involvement has continued to grow year after year. You’ll find Kimberly-Clark team members participating in all the center’s events throughout the year including the Glow Run; Sky Dive for Kids; and the Cherishing Children Dinner & Awards presentation.

ight in the middle of Chicago making history with the World Series game five, The Jones Center’s Big Night Gala whisked guests away to the Windy City for an evening of fun, food and shopping during its Oct. 29 event in Springdale.

The honorary co-chairmen of the event were Shawn Baldwin of Walmart and Jason Nichol of Tyson Foods. The night started with a cocktail reception and whiskey tasting led by local “Retrotender” Brandon Davidson and shopping on Michigan Avenue. Big jazz “old-Chicago” sounds from the Fayetteville Jazz Collective buzzed throughout the halls. That night, Tyson Foods announced a $750,000 donation to The Jones Center for the interior renovation and expansion of its fitness center and food court area. The renovated area will be named “The Tyson Foods Fitness and Food Wing.” After the program, guests enjoyed dinner at Harvey’s Steakhouse, named after The Jones Center’s co-founder, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Harvey Jones. The Tyson Foods global chef team created a mouth-watering menu starting with a classic iceberg lettuce wedge with blue cheese dressing, a USDA prime Chicago strip steak served with balsamic red wine butter sauce, truffle whipped mashed potatoes and sautéed grilled vegetables. And for dessert, of course nothing but decadent Chicagostyle cheesecake would do. Dinner was paired with two featured wines from the North California Coast, presented by E&J Gallo Winery. Following dinner, guests filled their treat bags at the Wrigley Candy Store. Not to be missed were some incredible auction items like a fabulous trip for four to experience New York Fashion Week, generously underwritten by Unilever. Also included were a $3,000 Visa gift card for travel expenses and a gift basket of Tresemmé styling products. Other auction items included a donation from MARS for the ultimate Chicago getaway with a stay at the Four Seasons, Blackhawks game tickets and tour of iconic Wrigley Field Ballpark.

Taking Action Against Hunger RELIEVING HUNGER

Hunger is a reality for many families who face barriers to getting enough healthy food. In the U.S. alone, the USDA estimates that more than 48 million Americans, including more than 15 million children, face food insecurity – the inability to access food on a regular, predictable basis. To help address this problem, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are working to strengthen the charitable meal system and to extend the reach of hunger relief programs.

STRENGTHENING THE CHARITABLE MEAL SYSTEM

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have committed to providing 4 billion meals between 2015 and 2020 to those who need them most. The company is reaching for this goal through a combination of grants to charitable organizations and hunger relief programs, as well as through food donations from its stores, clubs and distribution centers. In 2016, the company contributed more than $61 million in funding to organizations, such as Feeding America, who are working to alleviate hunger. The primary aim is to strengthen the charitable food system as a whole by building capacity and developing infrastructure within organizations working in hunger relief. This approach deepens local connections with communities, allows for swift response in emergencies and promotes scalable relief solutions.

FEEDING AMERICA

To reach their goal of providing 4 billion meals to individuals in need by 2020, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation formed a strategic collaboration with the national hunger organization, Feeding America. Drawing on their national scale and capacity, as well as their community presence through member food banks and agencies, this work allows Walmart to help implement several nationwide programs, while also engaging local associates and reaching local communities.

RETAIL COORDINATOR TRAVIS SORENSEN WITH NWA FOOD BANK

HELPING NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

Locally, the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank is one of six Feeding America food banks in Arkansas. The local food bank provided 8.2 million pounds of food or 6.9 million meals in 2015. Did you know that just $25 is enough for 275 meals if you donate to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank? The food insecurity rate in Arkansas is more than 19 percent, according to Feeding America’s website, and some 53 percent of Arkansans are below SNAP threshold of poverty, which is a family of four with a household income of $44,955 annually. Travis Sorenson is the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank Retail Coordinator, a position that was funded and created by the Walmart Foundation and Feeding America. He serves as a liaison between Walmart stores and the local food bank help train and coordinate with the stores what can be donated, and in what quantities. Since Sorenson’s job was implemented, there’s been a more than 475,000 lb. donation increase in the last year. “We get donations five days a week and distribute food to the community,” Sorenson says. “More than 1/3 of the food in America is thrown away. You could literally solve hunger if we didn’t waste so much. Thankfully, Walmart is taking the initiative to help us, and the community. Walmart is in a unique leadership position to positively impact the issue of hunger in the United States. In October 2014, Walmart announced a commitment to create a more sustainable food system, with a focus on improving the affordability of food by lowering the “true cost” of food for both customers and the environment, increasing access to food, making healthier eating easier, and improving the safety and transparency of the food chain. This commitment includes a goal of providing four billion meals to those in need in the U.S. by 2020. Brought to you by:
