We wrapped up 2012 with plenty of events in November and December that didn’t disappoint. The end of the year is always notable in the philanthropic community of Northwest Arkansas for the array of events that take place.

1

Several organizations held their annual benefits in November, including the Washington Regional Medical Center Foundation, which held its popular Autumn Brunch at the home of Joanie and Jon Dyer. Loving Choices held its annual Fall Banquet for guests to support the mission of the organization. The Association of Fundraising Professionals celebrated National Philanthropy Day by honoring individuals and organizations that have improved the quality of life in our community. November also had its share of galas and formal events. Youth Bridge’s It’s a Wonderful Life Gala included a roast of Shawn Baldwin, Senior Vice President of Freezer-Cooler Merchandising for Sam’s Club U.S. and Puerto Rico. The Jewels of Giving Gala raised funds to help the NWA Food Bank continue to nourish our community. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Tea Rose Foundation of Northwest Arkansas once again teamed up for the Emerald City Scholarship Event. Attendees to the Voyage for Hospice Gala helped make dreams come true for patients and families of Circle of Life Hospice.

2 3

In addition to these galas, a few organizations broke the mold. The Ryan Murphy Foundation held an 80s Night to raise funds for the Cancer Support Home of Benton County. Art was the name of the game for several events. Arts Center of the Ozarks held the 10th annual 5x5 Auction & Jazz Soiree, which featured over 350 local artists’ work on 5x5 canvasses. Benton County Sunshine School displayed the artwork of its students and local artists at A Very Special Art Show, and the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter displayed even more artwork up for grabs at the Fresh StART Art Auction.

December may have been a quiet month, but the highlight was not hard to miss—O’ Night Divine Charity Ball is a hit every year and this year was no different. The evening to benefit the Mercy Health Foundation Northwest Arkansas kicked off with a VIP hour, where General Mills was honored as the 2012 Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation. As attendees arrived they were greeted with live music in the atrium of the John Q. Hammons Center, a fun photo experience with Kodak and of course plenty of socializing with the who’s who of Northwest Arkansas.

Inside the event hall, Shirley’s Flowers’ beautiful creations were the focal point of the tables. Guests dined on a delicious menu of lobster mac and cheese, garlic and rosemary filet mignon, pecancrusted chicken and polished the delicious meal off with mini cupcakes. After dinner, Dick Trammel appealed to the crowd for his annual Dickey Ray Club, where over $75,000 was raised for the Mobile Health Bus that Mercy expects to roll out this year. The Health Bus will help the hospital reach the underserved and rural communities in Northwest Arkansas. The live auction went on to raise even more funds for the Foundation through items such as a Lake Tahoe Ski Retreat, a trip to the Academy of Country Music Awards and a yacht racing extravaganza.

Country music artist Easton Corbin wowed supporters with his rendition of O’ Holy Night and helped end the night on a very high note. He performed a few of his radio hits, and held a meet and greet after the show for VIP guests. After Easton left the stage, attendees were invited to continue the party at the After-Glow bash by New Creature, with a Hershey Bliss Coffee Bar. D.J. Kirby helped guests dance the rest of the night away.

WHY NOT?

Party in honor of the King

The King of Rock and Roll would celebrate his 78th birthday on January 8. Born in 1935 in Tupelo, Miss., Elvis Presley may not be around to celebrate, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do a little bit of reveling for him. Elvis was a cultural icon of his lifetime and beyond. He fascinated millions of people around the world who grew up listening to his music throughout the peak of his career and millions more from generations to come. We plan to celebrate his birthday in style—just the way he would want it, by throwing together a peanut butter and banana sandwich, putting on a few of his iconic tunes, and dreaming of hanging out with the King himself. Here are a few facts you may not know about the man, the myth, the legend….

1. When Elvis received a guitar for his eleventh birthday, he was disappointed; he was hoping for a bike. 2. It is unclear whether Elvis’ middle

9. Elvis starred in 31 feature films as an actor and two theatrically released concert documentary films. 10. The first Grammy Award Elvis received was for the 1967

name is spelled Aron or Aaron. Aron was the spelling his parents chose, apparently to make it similar to the middle name of Elvis’ stillborn identical twin, Jesse Garon Presley. Eventually, Elvis sought to change the spelling of his middle name to the traditional and biblical Aaron. In the process, he learned that offcial state records had inexplicably listed it as Aaron and not Aron as on his original birth records.

3. In the eighth grade, Elvis received a “C” in music.

4. “Heartbreak Hotel” was the first Elvis single to sell over a million copies. 5. Elvis made only one appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, in October of 1954. After being told he should go back to truck driving, Elvis swore to never return to the Grand Ole Opry and he never did.

Gospel release, “How Great Thou Art.”

11. Elvis wore a cross, a star of David, and other religious symbols around his neck, explaining “I don’t want to miss out on heaven due to a technicality.” 12. Elvis was awarded two medals while serving in the Army, one for expert marksmanship, the other for sharpshooting.

13. Elvis was six feet tall. 14. Elvis died of a heart attack on August 16, 1977. Many mistakenly believe he died of a drug overdose. 15. Elvis is the best selling

solo artist in U.S. history and remained at the top of the charts for 80 weeks, more weeks than any other artist.

6. Elvis never learned to read music. 7. Elvis bought Graceland in 1957 for $100,000. Today Graceland is one of the most visited homes in America, now attracting over 600,000 visitors annually. 8. Elvis’ natural hair color was blond (in his early years) and light/dirty brown; he dyed it black.

14

MARCH

increases your risk, so be sure to cover up with a high SPF sunscreen every day.

25.Go out of your way to plan a date night... with your guy or girlfriends to reconnect and recharge. 26.Buy organic... fruits and veggies for a week. Though they might be slightly pricier, the nutrient benefits are worth it.

own peace of mind and you’ll feel better just by taking action.

OCTOBER

20

NOVEMBER

44.Try better household cleaning products... that not only protect the environment but your health as well. 45.Try cutting back on caffeine this week. Start by cutting out a cup of coffee or soda a day, and see if you can build yourself up to a whole day without caffeine.

46.Write down your pit and peak of the day. This helps us focus on the positive and also make changes to get rid of the negatives in our lives. 47.Plan a few ways to give back to your community. Take time to feel grateful for what you have and share it with others.

Fill Up Your Fine Lines Q&A WITH BECKY MCCULLOUGH, REGISTERED NURSE AT GLO LIMITED NWA

If we’re considering injections this year for the first time, what should we take into account to help us make the right decision? Have a consultation, ask questions and make sure the injector is experienced. What common areas of our face should we be looking at for potential injectable sites? For Botox, look between your eyebrows, on your forehead and around the eyes for crow’s feet. When considering fillers, look at nasal labial folds and marionette lines. Having a consult will help you know what areas that could be improved. If we were just going to do one thing, what is one thing we can do to make a big impact on how we look? Modify your skin care regimen and always apply sunscreen. What is the recommended age to start fillers and injectables? Each person is different, but some start in their early to mid 20s. Is this going to hurt? Injections have a minimal discomfort. How soon can we expect results? With Botox, you can usually see results within seven to 10 days. On fillers, you can see results immediately before the swelling sets in, but after seven to 10 days you’ll see the final results. How long will the results last? Depending on which product you use, it will last anywhere from three to12 months. Let’s talk money. What can we expect to spend? Each case is different, but you can expect to spend $150 to $1,500, depending on product and quantity. What are the benefits to injections as opposed to surgeries like a face-lift? Injectables are less invasive than other surgery options, there is no general anesthesia risk, and the down time after a procedure is minimal compared to alternative methods. Will it look natural? Yes, results are usually natural appearing and usually described as a “softer look.”

30

Start the Year with a Healthy and Beautiful Smile Q&A WITH DR. LANCE OSBORNE OF LANCE OSBORNE DENTISTRY

What would you say is the first step to a healthier smile? The first step to a healthier smile is having great home care and having your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year. What are the benefits of a teeth whitening system through your dentist, as opposed to store-bought methods such as whitening strips? My opinion is that the professional teeth whitening systems deliver a more concentrated, more powerful whitening solution, and do a great job of getting around corners of teeth and not just the front of teeth. Strips and especially whitening toothpastes are not as strong and can be easily diluted by saliva, which lowers their effectiveness. If we’re considering veneers, what are some things we should take into account? A patient must know that a veneer requires space and that space must come from the reduction of tooth structure, so the veneer won’t appear too thick after it is cemented. Also, if a tooth is severely discolored, more tooth structure must be removed in order to mask the discoloration. If planned properly and prepared properly, veneers can mask even the darkest stained teeth. If not planned and prepared properly, the veneer will appear dark when cemented to a dark tooth. How can changing our diet affect our dental health? What are ways you suggest for patients to change their diet to improve the health of their teeth? Probably the most common suggestion I make is to stay off sodas and high sugar content drinks. Also, if you can’t brush after a meal, the next best thing is to chew sugarless gum—it helps remove food particles from the grooves of teeth. Anything we can do besides brushing to ward off bad breathe? The most important part of controlling bad breath is to have proper oral hygiene. Make sure you are brushing your tongue, as it is a harbor for bacteria due to all the fissures and folds on it. How often should we be replacing our toothbrush? Every three months or when the ends of the bristles no longer stand straight and start to look curved. What are your favorite store-bought dental products? I prefer toothpaste with flouride as flouride helps strengthen enamel. Sensodyne is great for sensitive teeth. In between our regularly scheduled dentist cleanings, is there anything special we can be doing to maintain clean and healthy teeth? The most important thing you can do is to maintain excellent home care. Both brushing and flossing help tremendously with not only our oral health but also our overall health.

Mix up your Makeup Routine Q&A WITH FALLON YOCKEY, MAKEUP ARTIST AT LUXE BEAUTY For people in a makeup rut, what are easy ways to mix it up and add some excitement to their daily routine? Switching out lip color is the quickest and most effective way to add a little excitement to your daily routine. Don’t be afraid to try something new! Luxe offers personal consultations for all of your face, hair, make-up and beauty questions. It is usually a better idea to get a professional’s opinion before trying something new that you may be hesitant about. What are some must-haves for a simple daytime look when we’re in a hurry and on-the-go? Mascara, blush and sheer colored gloss will brighten up a very natural face. With little effort and time, you will be out the door and headed to your destination. Are there any top products that need to be added to our repertoire this year? Vitamin C is the best defense against sun damage. This should be in every woman’s cabinet! Don’t forget to also use a moisturizer or foundation with SPF for an added layer of protection. Besides the typical rotation of foundation, concealer, mascara and blush, what are products that most of us are missing in our daily routine? Sheer glow primer is great in winter, and adds a hint of moisture with a flawless look. Any tips for transitioning our makeup from winter to spring? Using a light bronzer throughout the winter is a must! Also, go with a deeper lip color during the cooler months. What colors are going to be big this spring? Bright pink, coral and red have definitely made a come back. If this is something you like but are afraid of, start with a sheer tint and go from there! The cold weather can be harsh on our skin. What do you recommend for hydrating our face and lips? First, start with a light exfoliation on the lips. Mixing brown sugar and honey is a great at-home remedy. Follow this with a light Aquaphor and go to bed. For the face, we here at Luxe love SkinCeuticals Emollience moisturizer. This is a great product for all skin types, from the most sensitive to the driest! We’re thinking about making the jump to false lashes this year. Is it worth the leap? I am not a huge fan of lash extensions. I feel that after time, you will lose you natural lashes from the constant pressure. I do, however, love a lash growth stimulator (Revita Lash, Blinc, ect.). Adding a false lash for a fun night out on the town is a great accessory! What are your tips for our daily face wash routine? Clarisonic is the best way to cleanse you skin. Using it two times a day with Vitamin C helps against anti-aging. This is the best at-home routine I have seen! How often should we be cleaning our makeup brushes? How would you recommend we do that? About once a month give your brushes a good wash with gentle or baby shampoo. Make sure to have the water flowing down the brush hairs, this will keep the form better. Let your brushes air dry. In between washes, use an alcohol spray for a quick sanitation and cleanse.

Stop Skin Problems Q&A WITH DR. MISSY CLIFTON OF PREMIER DERMATOLOGY & SKIN RENEWAL CLINIC Dry skin can be a problem in the colder months. What would you recommend for treating and preventing dryness? Look for cleansers and lotions that are fragrance free and have skin barrier repair with ceramides. Cetaphil Restoraderm and Lubriderm Ultra Healing are my favorite over-thecounter products for treating dry skin. How can we alleviate acne breakouts and prevent new ones from popping up? Always wash your face before bed with an oil-free cleanser with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Use only oil-free moisturizers and makeups. Mineral based makeup, like Jane Iredale, is your best option. Sun-damaged skin is becoming a problem as we get older. How can we treat it? Depending on the depth of the damage, there are creams and serums to reverse the damage. If the sun damage is extensive, chemical peels and laser treatments may be needed. As we age, our skin takes a beating. What can we start early on in life to prevent skin problems such as wrinkling? Use sunscreen daily and a moisturizer with antioxidants to keep your skin looking younger. At night, use retinoids to help rejuvenate and rebuild collagen. If it’s too late to prevent, what can we do now to reverse the effects of aging on our skin? It’s never too late to prevent further damage. There are laser resurfacing treatments and deeper chemical peels that can make a huge difference on damaged skin. If there are pre-cancerous changes, a treatment called photodynamic therapy is amazing. It helps to reverse the damage and restore skin health. Premier is working hard to prevent and treat skin cancer and melanoma. What do you recommend for your patients to do their part in preventing the disease? The most important thing to do is to get familiar with your skin and do a monthly self-exam. Any new, changing or non-healing lesion needs evaluation. Any mole that enlarges, gets very black, develops more than one color or starts to get an irregular shape needs to be checked. We love to pamper ourselves at East Meets West at Premier. What facials or treatments would you recommend to improve our skin health? Many of our facial and body treatments include peptides, which rebuild the skin, and antioxidants, which help the skin to repair and rejuvenate. Our world-class aestheticians, massage therapists and nail specialists will customize a treatment package specific to your skin type. We’ve heard chemical peels can help treat a multitude of skin problems and are considering getting one. What are the different peels you offer and what are their benefits? We offer a wide range of peels from Vitamin A, to the VIVITE Extended Release Glycolic Peel, to our strongest peel, The Trichloracetic Acid Peel. A series of mild peels can really rejuvenate the skin by exfoliating dead cells. They even out skin tone and help your skin look healthy and fresh. Deeper peels, like TCA, can really improve deeper pigment changes and more extensive sun damage. What are your favorite products for face wash and skincare? The key is to find the right active ingredients for each person’s skin type and degree of sun damage. My favorite ingredients are antioxidants, like Idebenone and Coffeeberry, skin rebuilding peptides, exfoliators, such as glycolic acid and collagen rebuilding retinoids. Personal skin consultations are complimentary at Premier. We would love to customize a skin care plan for anyone interested in having the healthiest skin possible. 34

Stay Stress Free Q&A WITH ASHLEY SPURLOCK, SPA DIRECTOR AT SPA BOTANICA If we’re feeling stressed out, what spa treatments would you recommend? For stress management, my recommendation includes a facial as our skin often bears the effects of our stress. Next, enjoy a tropical de-aging wrap. This delightful mango passion fruit treatment will brighten and tone your skin. Finish the day off with a Moroccanoil blow-out, makeup application, manicure and pedicure and you’re back, ready to conquer the world! A day at the spa sounds so relaxing right now. But what if we’ve only got an hour or two to spare? What is one treatment that will transform us in a short amount of time? The Moroccanoil Ritual! This 80-minute head to toe experience features a full body dry exfoliation and relaxing application of Moroccanoil’s intense hydrating treatment melting into skin as a therapeutic hot stone massage is performed. The journey includes Moroccanoil’s Shirodhara warm scalp treatment and intense hydrating mask massaged into the scalp and hair. Moroccanoil body rituals are exclusively available at Spa Botanica. How often would you recommend getting a massage or being pampered at the spa? As often as possible! I recommend no less than one massage per month. Ideally, a weekly or bi-weekly treatment will provide maximum results for stress and chronic pain management. However, do what you can! Let’s talk about the guys. Though they can be hesitant to pamper themselves, what treatments do you offer just for men? Spa Botanica features Jack Black for Men products on its retail shelves so we developed our own professional treatments featuring the line including a refining facial focused on the unique skin concerns of men, a muscle rehab body scrub and executive manicure. Our Bourbon on the Rocks Pedicure includes a hot stone massage and warm brown sugar scrub spiked with Kentucky whiskey. What are the benefits of a body wrap? There are many types of body wraps and all feature unique benefits such as skin smoothing, brightening and toning, as well as intense hydration. Generally speaking, body treatments provide some degree of reduced water retention and detoxification as your natural body heat eliminates toxins while wrapped. What are the positive effects a day at the spa can have? Those who commit regular time to themselves at the spa are less stressed and when this occurs, many positive changes begin to occur both mentally and physically. They include more restful sleep, less muscle tension and chronic pain, increased energy, more productivity at work and home, strengthened immune system and less sickness, and a more positive and happier outlook on life. Treatments for the skin, hair and nails can also enhance physical appearance and improve overall self-esteem and confidence. How can we get the most out of our spa treatments? If possible, schedule your visit for a day that is less busy for the entire family so you can fully enjoy your visit. A few days before start drinking lots of water and stay committed to this. On the day of your appointment, there are often complimentary amenities to be enjoyed during your visit. Budget this time into your calendar and take full advantage of every opportunity to relax. What products do you have that we can take home and pamper ourselves with? Spa Botanica has a wonderful boutique full of the industry’s most respected skincare, makeup and body products as well as robes, neck wraps, candles and other gifts that support the spa lifestyle. We are proud to feature Pevonia Botanica, Dermalogica, Kneipp, Glo Minerals Makeup. We offer Moroccanoil salon products and are pleased to introduce the brand’s new body line this month. Lastly, Farm House Fresh has been a huge hit! These yummy products are 88-99 percent natural, many of them gluten and vegan free and are made in Texas.

Tame Your Mane Q&A WITH TAYLOR HOUSLEY SUTTON OF DEAD SWANKY SALON If we made one change in our hair care regiment this year, what would you suggest that be? Adding a treatment! Making your hair as healthy as it can be is the first step to gorgeous locks. Try sleeping in a deep conditioning mask. For a daily treatment, spray a light leave-in conditioner before you style or try a serum when your hair is dry for shine and hydration. Are there any big trends that you’re excited about for the spring? I have been cutting lots of fringe lately. It’s a great way to try something new without making a drastic color or length change. Zooey Deschanel is my inspiration! Some other great trends to try: a deep, smooth side part; braids—try a small one in front like a headband or a fishtail braid; hair accessories are fun and great for bad hair days—try a headband, turban, boho hat or just pin hair behind your ear for a retro look; low knot—brush your hair into a low pony, pull the hair halfway through and leave in a loop, then take a piece from underneath and wrap around the elastic and pin—instant chic! What are your favorite tips for maintaining healthy hair? I like to sleep with my hair in a bun with leave-in conditioner. The next morning, take it down and you have beach waves! I also like to braid my hair when it is damp and wear it until the next day. When you unbraid it, touch it up with a few curls and you have a pretty, wavy style without having to blow-dry! Here in the south, we’re all about big, poufy hair. How can we make sure we’re not damaging our hair from all the teasing we’re doing to achieve this look? Make sure you are using a volumizing product on your roots before you blow-dry and use a round brush on top for maximum volume. When you are ready to tease, spray some dry shampoo at the roots and try using a toothbrush or a very fine tooth comb. The soft toothbrush bristles will keep from damaging your hair and the dry shampoo will give lift so you won’t need to do as much damaging backcombing. At night, use a paddle brush and gently brush the backcombing out from your ends up...and don’t forget to deep condition later! Do we really have to use special shampoo and conditioner on color treated hair? Great question! I do believe it is best to use shampoo for color treated hair. Think about it—you spend a lot to get that color, so why not use shampoo that prolongs it? For the best results you should look for a sulfate-free product. Conditioner is fair game—use whatever works for your hair type! What are your favorite hair care products? I have to say, I have been spoiled by using Kerastase products for the past seven years but a whole regimen of the same product line is not necessary! My favorite hairspray is by Shu Uemura, and they also make the best mousse to enhance curl I have ever used—Kaze Wave. Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray is great for beachy texture, and I swear by Psssst! dry shampoo for those non-wash days. If we could only add one hair care product to our lineup, what would you suggest? I would have to say a serum. Many brands make one, and they are great because you can use it on wet or dry hair. Makes all types of hair shiny and silky! What hair trend from the last year are you over and ready to say goodbye to forever? As a general rule, I don’t like to see chunky, streaky color, so I am glad very blended, natural color is back. Ombre is still in, but I am taking clients away from the extreme versions of this trend, and doing a more blended, subtle graduation of dark to light ends. And please, say no to brightly colored tips! 36

Be Heart Healthy Q&A WITH DR. AMR EL-SHAFEI, CARDIOLOGY PHYSICIAN WITH MERCY NORTHWEST ARKANSAS Can you describe for us an ideal heart healthy diet? Nearly all of today’s popular diet programs are heart healthy and recommended, such as Weight Watchers or the South Beach Diet. A heart healthy diet consists of lean protein, high fiber, low fat, low sodium, as well as portion control. Are there any new surprising facts about heart disease that our parents’ generation didn’t know that we should be aware of? Research shows blockages in arteries can regress or shrink with strict control of cholesterol and inflammation. How much exercise should we really be getting every day? You should be getting 30 minutes sustained exercise every day, strenuous enough to make talking more difficult. What are some common misconceptions about heart disease and its symptoms? The earliest sign of blockage in the heart is usually fatigue, or decreased endurance, not chest pain. We hear there different signs of a heart attack for men and women. Can you tell us what to look for? The warning signs leading up to the heart attack can differ based on gender. Women often have trouble sleeping, and have less typical pain, such as pain between the shoulder blades or in the throat. What differentiates the Mercy Health System when it comes to heart health and its treatment? There are two qualities that set Mercy apart in its approach to treatment of patients with cardiac issues. The first is very tangible and visible—state of the art facility, equipment and medical staff. The second is more difficult to describe, but equally important—it’s the Mercy spirit, the highly competent, highly compassionate care provided by every person that ‘touches’ a patient or family coming through our doors. How often would you recommend getting your heart checked by a physician and at what age should we begin? I recommend everyone have regular check ups with a primary care physician. If you have risk factors for developing coronary disease, you should have a basic cardiac evaluation such as lipid panel, EKG and vascular screening. Those risk factors are elevated lipids (bad cholesterol and triglycerides), diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking and family history of coronary disease, especially early onset. Is there anything we can be doing in our twenties to prevent heart disease? Developing healthy lifestyle choices in your 20’s can drastically reduce risk of developing coronary disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. I do recommend a baseline lipid panel in your 20’s to identify those with familial dyslipidemia—inherited cholesterol problems. Give us your opinion on the glass of red wine a day mentality. Does it really work? Alcohol is a two edged sword, I never recommend wine or any other type of alcohol for lipid management or to promote heart health. Alcohol in moderation isn’t dangerous to your heart however. If we had to make one lifestyle change in the upcoming year to better our heart health, what would you recommend? The first lifestyle change is always to stop smoking if the patient smokes. If the patient doesn’t smoke, I want them to be active every day and maintain a healthy weight.

To say that NWA Fashion Week 2012 was a blast would be an understatement. Not only was it a week full of fun, fashion and friends, but our team raised over $35,000 for nonprofits right here in Northwest Arkansas! This year’s event will be packed with the same excitement as last, but we have several surprises in store to make it even more memorable the second time around. New this year, NWAFW will host an after-party each night after the fashion shows on the ground level of the Chancellor Hotel. Our event team has booked the hottest DJs that promise to carry the party late into the night. The Union K+D at the Chancellor Hotel invites you to join them for an early dinner before the shows, or for late night snacks and drinks. And if you choose to make NWAFW a mini vacation, there are rooms and suites blocked off with special pricing for Fashion Week ticket holders. We have tripled our fundraising goal from last year with an ambitious target of $100,000 to donate back to the following nonprofits: 7Hills Homeless Center, American Cancer Society of NWA, Art Amiss, Junior League of NWA, NWA Children’s Shelter, Ozark Guidance, Restore Humanity, Single Parent Scholarship Fund of NWA, Spay Arkansas and The Miller Woodruff Foundation.

Hot cross buns! Hot cross buns! One a penny, Two a penny, Hot cross buns! Around the nineteenth century, hot cross buns were hawked by street vendors to the cry of “Hot cross buns!” Today, that cry has been immortalized as a popular nursery rhyme from those humble beginnings. Traditionally, the buns were sold at Eastertime to celebrate the religious significance of the buns. In fact, hot cross buns are full of Christian symbolism—from the bread to represent the communion of Christ, to the cross that appears on top to represent His death on the cross. Baking hot cross buns on Easter morning is a delicious tradition to symbolize the holiday. There are many variations on the traditional recipe of hot cross buns. Most popular is the dried fruit variety, but our favorite is the chocolate chip. Bake them Easter morning, or even the day before, because these buns are delicious hot or cold.

Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns INGREDIENTS For the Buns: ¾ oz. instant dry yeast ½ cup sugar 1 ½ cups lukewarm milk 4 ½ cups plain flour

1 tsp. salt 3 ½ tbsp. unsalted butter, melted 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 ½ cups chocolate chips

For the Glaze: ¼ cup sugar 3 tbsp. hot water

TO PREPARE 1.To make the buns, combine the lukewarm milk, sugar and dry yeast in a small bowl. Set aside for 15 minutes. It should become frothy and increase in size.

For the Crosses: 2 oz. white chocolate

Makes 15-16 hot cross buns. remaining chocolate chips, kneading lightly to incorporate them. Divide the dough evenly into 15 or 16 balls and place them close together on the baking tray.

2. Fit your mixer with the dough hook and put the flour and salt in the bowl of your mixer (if you don’t have one, you could do this by hand). Make a well in the center of the flour and pour in the melted butter, lightly beaten egg and frothy yeast mixture, as well as half the chocolate chips.

6. Preheat the oven to 400F. Cover the hot cross buns with plastic wrap and set aside to rise for 20 minutes.

3. Turn the mixer on low and knead for about five minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place it in a large bowl (not metal), cover with plastic wrap and set aside in warm place for about an hour, until the dough doubles in size.

8. For the glaze, dissolve the sugar in the hot water.

4. Line a large baking pan with parchment paper. 5. Once the dough has risen, knock it down and add the

7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden brown and fragrant. While the buns are baking, prepare your glaze.

9. Once the buns are cooked, remove them from the oven and quickly brush them with a few coats of the glaze. 10. To make the crosses, melt the white chocolate in the microwave in short bursts, stirring in between. Put the chocolate into a small plastic bag or piping bag, cut off the end and pipe crosses across the chocolate chip buns. 61
