This fall has been a very fun and busy event season in Northwest Arkansas! We kicked off August with the annual Color of Hope Charity Gala. Guests enjoyed an evening of live and silent auctions along with dinner and dancing while donning the color turquoise to benefit Arkansas Children’s Hospital. And who can forget the signature “Hopetini“ provided by Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse? It was delicious as always.

August 2014 will always be remembered as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge month, and not only were we there to witness UA Chancellor Gearhart get doused by the local ALS Arkansas Chapter, we too succumbed to the challenge. What a great cause!

Later in the month we attended A Cool Summer Homecoming to benefit the Kendrick Fincher Hydration for Life. With Arkansan and former NBA player Scottie Pippin as the guest speaker, the event raised awareness about the importance of hydration in sports. September started out tasty as ever with the Washington Regional Foundation’s Savor the Flavor event and Chefs in the Garden at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. Local chefs like Steven Brooks of Cooking Today and Maudie Schmitt of Café Rue Orleans created delicious eats for guests to enjoy while mingling through the beautiful 6 garden. Donning big hats and seersucker suits meant it was time for Polo in the Ozarks’ benefiting Life Styles Inc., which celebrated 25 years on the NWA event scene. The Northwest Arkansas Charity Challenge of Champions took place the following week with golf and tennis tournaments at Pinnacle Country Club, and a VIP cocktail hour at the home of Courtney and Matt Kistler.

The first weekend in October was absolutely packed with fabulous nonprofit events. We attended a record-breaking six events in just one weekend. Among the non-stop fun, we tasted wine at the annual Restore Humanity’s Winetopia; enjoyed live and silent auctions at the Tom Pagnozzi Charity Golf Tournament; and witnessed a fashion show like no other at Hope Cancer Resources’ Gentlemen of Distinction.

f friends are the family we choose, then “friendsgiving” is a way to celebrate Thanksgiving, even if we’re far from our families. I was brought up in Northwest Arkansas, so I have more than my fair share of beloved buddies in the area. I asked a few of them to help me throw a festive fall feast. Friends were invited for cocktails, carousing and camaraderie on an enchanted autumn evening.

One of my pals for more than 20 years, Mallory (Gramling) Zaffaroni agreed to host. She and her husband, Matt, have the perfect setup for entertaining – a house in the middle of town complete with a cozy fire-pit, a spectacular view and an adorable golden-doodle named Tony. Mallory is an excellent cook and she shines as a hostess in her home. While the kitchen bustled and people arrived, Mallory was in her element hurrying through the house with baby Parker on her hip.

D.I.Y. MALLORY’S MAGNOLIA WREATHS Supplies: • • • •

magnolia tree stems grapevine wreath floral wire hot glue gun

Instructions: 1. Purchase a grapevine wreath at the craft store. Choose a wreath that is smaller than your intended final product. Once the leaves are added, the wreath will be wider. 2. Cut short limbs off of a magnolia tree. *To add interest to the wreath, choose some with a lot of leaves and some with more buds. 3. Place a stem on wreath, making sure your stems are short enough to create a natural curve with the wreath. 4. Using floral wire, attach the middle of the branch to the wreath. Twist the wire together in the back to secure. 5. Continue adding branches around the wreath, securing any random leaves with hot glue. 6. When adding a bow, tie the ribbon first and then secure with hot glue. As winter progresses, additional adornments can be added and the possibilities are endless. The edges of the leaves can be painted with glitter or the entire wreath can be sprayed with metallic paint to transition the wreath to holiday. 18

Mallory arranged the table with a natural grass runner, gourds and pumpkins in a variety of shapes and colors, mini pinecones, twinkle lights, mercury glass candlesticks and silver chargers to create the autumn ambiance. Fall-themed cloth napkins, heavy white dishes (always a classic) and vintage place cards completed the “tablescape.” 20

COVER STORY Holly with her children Taylor (4), Parker (6) and Sawyer (18 months)

54

From “momagers” to “mompreneurs,” more and more women are finding new and creative ways to not only be home with their children, but also pursue their careers. Being a modern day housewife is not just about balancing work and family; it is also about women finding a way to have it all. 55

COVER STORY

56

Self-proclaimed “Doughmestic Housewife” Holly Thomas is a wife, stay-at-home mother of three busy children and the owner of a small but growing business run completely out of her home. The Doughmestic Housewife is an oasis of the cutest, tastiest, and most intricately detailed sugar cookies we’ve ever seen. And the actual (doughmestic) housewife, Holly, is a woman that (dare we say it) has found the secret to having it all. We sat down with her to talk work, family life and her love of sugar cookie confection. 57

Dea r Sa nta

COVER STORY You’re a mom of three children under the age of 6, a wife, and a small business owner. How do you keep up? Truthfully I don’t, ha! There are many days I am up to my neck in diapers, dishes and cookie dough. All of these things are blessings so I do try my best to keep up.

When did you start making cookies and why? I offered to help with a baby shower and my responsibility was cookies. I googled cut out sugar cookie and taught myself how to make them. I took my first order the day of the shower, and the rest is history.

What inspires the creativity in your cookies? I get cookie inspiration from everywhere. From online clipart, to my kids’ books, there’s always something waiting to be made into a cookie!

It seems really tedious to create the intricate details of your cookies. How long does it take you to create one batch? The more detailed a cookie, the longer it takes. Cookies with multiple colors are also really time consuming – a simple batch can take an hour to decorate, while an intricate one can be a process over a few days.

Your popularity appears to extend past the world of cookie making. From the clothes you wear to the way you decorate you home, your 25k+ Instagram followers seem engaged in all of it. How do you think people relate to you? I feel like there are pieces of me that people from all walks of life can relate to. A cookie might be the initial thing that draws someone in; only to find out we have other things in common – like that I’m a wife, mom, daughter, friend and Christian. I think everyone can relate to one of those things. A cute cookie is always easy to relate to.

COVER STORY A FEW OF HOLLY’S FAVORITE COOKIE DESIGNS

What do you think it means to be a modern housewife and what do you enjoy most about it? To me, a modern housewife is pursuing my dreams while staying home with my kids. I’m able to pursue two dreams at once – becoming an accomplished cookie decorator, and building a business while staying home with my kids. I choose how much I want to work and I love that flexibility, but it’s a fine balance that I’m still working on. I love what I do, so I don’t consider it a job at all.

Do you think you have found a way to really have it all? I think everyone’s definition of having it all is different, but I would consider having a roof over my head, a family to love and take care of as well as my health and faith as having it all. I do feel very blessed to stay at home with my kiddos, yet have a successful business venture that I love and enjoy. I would encourage women to do what you love and work hard at it. However, there have been many nights that I’ve only slept for an hour, if at all. I’ve worked long hours to build my business on my own and people don’t see me catching up on dishes and laundry in my sweats, or downing coffee so I can keep my eyes open. 64

What is the message that you believe keeps people coming back, and has brought people from all over the globe to want a small peek into your life? I feel like genuine joy is contagious. I have always been a person that sees the glass half full. I really try to be encouraging and uplifting to the people I come across. Hopefully those people are coming back for a smile.

Do you envision pushing your business further? This is something we are considering and praying for God’s will in the situation. I do have plans to grow my business. I’ve tried to keep it under control by myself, and I have passed that point so be on the watch! You may see my cookies in your favorite store in the future, or you may just have to come visit me at my own cookie shop. My husband and I feel so blessed by all that has happened in three short years, but I want to make sure that I’m continuing to choose the best thing for my family as a wife and mom.

For now, how can we get our hands on some of these cookies? You can keep up with my Instagram to catch a flash sale to buy cookies. I will also be at The Little Craft Show on Dec. 4 and 5 at the Fayetteville Town Center so come see me! 65

THE DISH

A Very Sweet Tradition

A candy assortment at Christmas is one of the delights of the holiday season. Anyone with a sweet tooth can appreciate the time, love and skill required to create delicious candies. But if you’re like us, you’re somewhat intimidated by the tricky, often time-consuming process of baking. Wouldn’t it be lovely to give the gift of handcrafted confections without spending hours in the kitchen? We have found the answer… Mary’s Little Sweets, a made-to-order bakery in Bentonville. Mary, the owner/chef, specializes in small, handcrafted, artisan desserts and baked goods like French macarons and personalized cake-pops. She is also adept at candy making and shared a few of her secrets with us. Wasn’t that sweet? Pun intended!

THE DISH

Candies by

Candied Orange Peel

Spiced Caramels

Peel of 2 oranges, cut into ¼ inch strips

2 cups heavy cream

½ teaspoon salt

2 ¼ cups sugar

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

¾ cups water

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 teaspoon cinnamon

Additional sugar for rolling

1 ¼ cups corn syrup

¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Place peels in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Heat on high until water comes to a boil. Drain peels. Repeat this process once more, setting the drained orange peels aside. Combine sugar and water in the saucepan and bring to boil over mediumhigh until the mixture registers 230°F on a candy thermometer. Add peel to the syrup and reduce heat to simmer. Simmer 1 hour or until peels are translucent. Do not stir, only swirl the saucepan to ensure peels are covered. Remove peels to a cooling rack and let sit for 5 minutes before rolling in sugar. Return to rack to dry for 4-5 hours. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Spray bottom and sides of a 9x13-inch rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray and line with parchment paper, allowing parchment to overhang on both ends. Combine cream, sugar, butter, and corn syrup in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture registers 248°F on a candy thermometer. Immediately remove from heat and stir in salt, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves. Pour caramel onto baking sheet and let stand for at least 8 hours. Remove caramel using parchment sling and transfer to a cutting board. Cut into pieces and wrap in wax paper. Store wrapped caramels at room temperature for up to 3 weeks.

½ teaspoon nutmeg

Chocolate Hazlenut Toffee 1 cup unsalted butter, melted 1 cups sugar 1/3

Homemade Peppermint Marshmallows

½ teaspoon salt

2 ½ tablespoons gelatin

½ cup water

4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, tempered

½ cup cold water

cup hazelnuts, toasted and roughly chopped

1 cups sugar

1 teaspoon pure peppermint extract

1 cup corn syrup

Liquid red food coloring

¼ teaspoon salt

Powdered sugar

½

Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine butter, sugar, water, and corn syrup in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan. Bring to boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture registers 300°F on a candy thermometer. Stir in salt and pour mixture onto baking sheet without spreading. Let cool completely. Spread tempered chocolate over the cooled toffee and sprinkle with hazelnuts. Let stand uncovered for at least 2 hours. Break into pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

PEPPERMINT BARK 8 OUNCES WHITE CHOCOLATE ½ CUP CHOPPED CANDY CANES OR PEPPERMINT CANDIES Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a chef knife, roughly chop candy canes or peppermint candies and set aside. Place white chocolate in a glass bowl set over saucepan of simmering water (a double boiler) until melted. Pour melted chocolate onto a mixture onto baking sheet and sprinkle with candy cane pieces. Let stand uncovered for at least 2 hours. Break into pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Spray bottom and sides of 11x7-inch baking dish with cooking spray and dust with powdered sugar. In bowl of stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, sprinkle gelatin over ½ cup cold water. Combine sugar, corn syrup, salt and ½ cup water in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat until the mixture registers 240°F on a candy thermometer. Do not stir. Slowly pour syrup over softened gelatin while whisking on low speed. Increase to high speed and beat 8-10 minutes until mixture is white and has tripled in volume. Beat in peppermint extract and pour into baking dish, patting with a silicon spatula sprayed with cooking spray. Drop 6-8 drops of red food coloring onto top of marshmallow and use a toothpick to create candy cane-looking swirls. Let stand uncovered at least 8 hours. Run a sharp knife in between marshmallow and baking dish to loosen edges and turn marshmallow out onto a cutting board dusted with powdered sugar. Spray the knife with cooking spray and cut 1-inch squares. Dust bottom and sides of each marshmallow by dipping into a bowl of powdered sugar. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 weeks. 69
