Шановний читачу! Тобі дуже поталанило в тім, що ти відкрив цю книжку. Тому що той, хто побачив уже перші фото, не зможе зупинитися і перегляне всі до останнього. Назвати ці праці просто “фото” якось не випадає: перед нами – витвори справжнього високого мистецтва. Майстер насамперед зумів щоразу побачити світ якось так, як пересічна людина побачити не одразу зможе, - до того ж показати нам гармонію ліній і кольорів, щоб ми відчули все її загадкове звучання. Хто не був у Карпатах, той подумки в них побуває; хто бачив Карпати і захоплювався їх красою, той відчує її по-новому. І зрозуміє, що в них є якась таїна. Авторські відкриття Карпат інколи нагадують картини Реріха, який так само відчував таємничість “даху світу”. Аналогія не така вже й невиправдана. В українській міфопоетичній свідомості Карпати займають важливе місце так само, як Тибет і Гімалаї в міфології інших народів. Згадаймо у Гоголя в “Страшній помсті” той момент містичного відкриття жахливої таємниці братовбивства – коли “раптом стало видно в усі кінці світу”, на обрії з’явились гори, і старі люди говорили, що то Карпати. Там, в Карпатах, і чинилась “страшна помста” за смертний гріх. У Гоголя, етнографа і фольклориста за покликанням, відобразилася українська міфологічна географія, в якій Дніпро – не просто ріка, а наче давньогрецький Стікс, що розділяє верхній і нижній світи, таємничі вали лишилися як слід перемоги змієборця, що запряг подоланого змія і виорав ним землю від Києва до моря, а Карпати – першобатьківщина нашого народу, місце, де ростуть священні гаї – предмет поклоніння предків. І немає тут надприродних таємниць: адже, як ми знаємо тепер завдяки археології та мовознавству, предки слов’ян почали розселятися по Східній Європі десь із прикарпатських земель, що збереглося в могутній народній пам’яті у вигляді міфів і легенд, уривки яких дійшли і до нашого часу. Карпати – невичерпне джерело даних про життєвий світ наших предків. Мальовничі прикраси в побутовій культурі сповнені глибокого символічного смислу, значною мірою втраченого, – так само, як і пісні, і звичаї святкові і повсякденні; вивчення старовинної народної культури жителів Карпат дало дуже багато для наукової реконструкції давнього світогляду українського народу. Карпати віддавна сприймалися як край природної і культурної екзотики. Але є і дещо більше, ніж таємниці етнології і фольклористики. Мабуть, вперше універсальні загадки людського буття показали в шкіцах з карпатського побуту великі сини Карпатської землі – письменники Марко Черемшина і Василь Стефаник. А в іншому кінці України Михайло Коцюбинський своїм безсмертним твором “Тіні забутих предків” підніс до рівня всесвітніх людських проблем болі і радості повсякдення, дуже простими контурами окресливши реалії і цінності життя і смерті. Звернення до архаїки виявилось дзеркалом сучасності, що показав усьому світу створений на основі “Тіней забутих предків” геніальний фільм Параджанова.
І, дивлячись на карпатську красу, дихаючи карпатським повітрям, відчуваючи, що став трохи ближчим до неба, сьогоднішній українець-городянин не може не відчувати болю за цю прадавню землю, що чи не першою в нас відчула згубні наслідки пожадливості і короткозорості поганого господарювання. Екологічні катастрофи, що їх одна за одною переживають останнім часом Карпати, змушують нас піднести зір і дивитися не тільки собі під ноги. Бо погляд людства повинен бути спрямований так само далеко – на тисячоліття – вперед, як ми навчилися спрямовувати його на тисячоліття назад. Карпати – наш дім. Наша колиска, колиска не тільки української культури. Наш дім – це також і та природа, в середовищі якої ми живемо, навіть якщо вона майже недосяжна для відвідин людини. Погляньте ж іще раз, який наш дім чудовий.

Dear reader! You have opened this book, and I am more than certain that you will not be able to close it until you have turned the last page and seen all the photographs. Yet, these are not mere photographs, black and white or colorful reflections of reality, but some of the finest examples of fine art. The ability to see the world differently from a common viewer has enabled the author to convey the harmony of the world’s lines and colors so that we can almost hear its mysterious tunes. When viewing this album, those who have never been to the Carpathians will be carried away by the mountains’ majestic beauty; those who have once been fascinated by their charms will definitely discover their new, implicit appeal. You will see for yourself that the mountains hold back some hidden enigma. The author’s photos of the Carpathian Mountains remind one of pictures by Rerih, who also sensed the mystery of the “world’s roof.” The comparison is not far-fetched. The Carpathians occupy an important place in Ukrainian mythology and poetry, as do Tibet and the Himalayas in the mythology of other nations. Take Gogol and his novel “The Terrible Revenge,” for instance. When the horrific mystery of fratricide was being revealed and “suddenly all the ends of the world became visible,” and somewhere on the horizon outlines of mountains peeked, the old people said that those were the Carpathians. It was there in the Carpathians that the “terrible revenge” for the deadly sin took place. Gogol, an ethnographer and folklore scientist by call, reflected in his writings Ukraine’s mythological geography in which the Dnipro is not just a river, but the ancient Styx dividing the upper and lower worlds; the cryptic ramparts are the reminders of a dragon-fighter’s victory who has harnessed the dragon to plow the land from Kyiv to the Black Sea; and the Carpathians are the cradle of our nation, the place where the scared gardens grow, once ardently worshipped by our ancestors. These are not legends. As recent archeological and language studies have proved, the starting point for Slavs’ forefathers in terms of inhabiting Eastern Europe was the Carpathian Mountains. Deeply rooted in people’s memory, this fact has been reflected in myths and legends, the bits of which are still being told by elderly people. Since long ago, the Carpathians have been perceived as the land full of exotic characters in Nature and culture. Yet, there is something beyond ethnographic and folklore mysteries. Perhaps, the first to bring to light the universal enigmas of human existence were the writers Marko Cheremshyna and Vasyl Stefanyk, who masterfully depicted everyday life in the Carpathians in their literary sketches. Another prominent writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, who lived at the opposite end of Ukraine, placed the pains and joys of everyday life on a par with universal human problems, having outlined in his enduring novel “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” the realities and values of life and death.
The Carpathians are an inexhaustible source of the data of our ancestors’ way of life. Exquisite adornments used to decorate household goods, for example, are fraught with symbolism, as are songs and festive and everyday customs. Yet the major part of this symbolic meaning has been lost during the centuries. The study of the ancient folk culture practiced by the people inhabiting the Carpathians helped to reconstruct the nation’s earlier outlook.
Marveling at the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, inhaling their fragrant air and viewing oneself to be a little closer to Heaven, a modern Ukrainian urban-dweller cannot but feel pain for this ancient land that was the first to experience destructive consequences of myopic land management. Ecological disasters have hit hard the area in recent years and make us think, and think hard of the future. Humanity must not only look into centuries of the past, but also into centuries of the future. The Carpathians are our mutual home. They are the cradle of culture, and not only Ukrainian culture. Our home is also the nature that surrounds us, even though it is sometimes hard to reach for the human being. Look once again at the wonderful world we live in.
