Even If ...you have had a hysterectomy or gone through menopause – You can still get a gynecologic cancer!
Myth #1: “I don’t need to worry about getting ovarian cancer because I had a hysterectomy and all those parts were taken out. Fact: Even if your ovaries and fallopian tubes have been removed, you can still get a G-Y-N cancer!
Myth #2: “My doctor told me I don’t need an annual pelvic exam since I’ve already been through menopause. Fact: “Endometrial cancer usually takes years to develop. It most often occurs in women who have already gone through menopause, according to Women’s Cancer Network (www.wcn.org). As hundreds of women visited the GYNCA booth at a recent trade show, we quickly realized how ill-informed women are about their gynecologic health and cancer risk. Two and three-time uterine and ovarian (primary peritoneal) cancer survivors who were answering questions of our visitors couldn’t believe what they were hearing, so now we find ourselves anxious to separate myth from fact. “The abdominal cavity and the surface of all the organs in it are covered by the peritoneum. This is a cellophane-like, glistening, moist sheet of tissue. It protects the organs in the abdomen. It also supports them and prevents from sticking to each other. That way they can move smoothly
within the abdomen. “The cells of the peritoneal lining develop from the same type of cell that lines the surface of the ovary. Certain cells in the peritoneum can transform into cancerous cells. When this occurs, the result is primary peritoneal cancer. And it can affect the surface of any organ contained there. (www.wcn.org) GYNCA’s newest emphasis is to ensure all women, their spouses and caregivers know the difference between myth and fact. Too many women die every day from late-stage gynecologic cancer diagnoses because they don’t get regular pelvic exams, ideally annually, after a hysterectomy and post-menopause. A pap smear detects only cervical cancer; pelvic exams are a basic, necessary tool in early detection of other gynecologic cancers, i.e. uterine, ovarian (PPC), vaginal and vulvar. At the very least, make sure you have an informed, in-depth conversation with your gynecologist or primary care physician. (References shared in part from Women’s Cancer Network, www.wcn.org).
