Letter from the Editor Hello Springfield, My name is Kaitlyn and if you haven’t heard already, I am the new editor for Springfield Metro CARES! I am so excited be a part of the CARES staff and can’t wait to work with and better get to know the nonprofits of Springfield. First of all, let me give you a little information about myself. I am a small town, Illinois native who recently graduated from Drury University. While there, I earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising and public relations. I was also a part of the visual communication program and have experience in graphic design, photography, and video production. As you look through this month’s issue, you may notice some changes to the look of Springfield CARES. We’ve developed sections to help organize our content and help you, the reader, better navigate through the issue. This month, we’re featuring Nancy O’Reilly in our Women Speak section where she discusses the major accomplishments women have made in the workforce and in life in general. We’re also taking a look how you should eat with your brain in our Healthy Living section. We’re very excited about the changes to Springfield CARES and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
Kaitlyn Jaeger Have a great month!

Helping you create the future you envision.
As promised, we have some great new additions to Springfield Metro CARES Magazine! As Kaitlyn mentioned, we have added sections to our magazine so that the things that interest you most in the nonprofit world are easier for you to find. As we continue to grow, it is our goal to share CARES with the entire community. If you own a business and would like CARES in your office, please contact our editor so that we can add you to our delivery list. For the month of August we are also offering FREE subscriptions to your home or office (one per home or location please). If you would like a FREE subscription to CARES, please email your address to: info@goicare.com and put FREE subscription in the subject line. If you are a nonprofit and are looking for ways to fundraise, we want to talk to you! Please call our office to schedule a meeting with me and we can go over the details! We love our nonprofits in the community and want to help you succeed. With August comes Back to School. Please take a moment to think about the great nonprofits that help our kids in school. There are many great organizations that offer assistance during the school year. If you are interested in donating or volunteering for one, give us a call and we will direct you to several here in the community that could use your help. As always, we take submissions of articles from writers and love photos that we can use for our covers and in our magazine. Please email us if you want more info on that: info@goicare.com.

Providing a holistic and strategic approach to increasing the capacity of nonprofits through staff and volunteer development and strengthening of financial resources.
Nonprofits And Social Media: Three Points For Developing An Effective Social Media Plan Are your social media efforts reaching and engaging your intended audience? Do you feel behind the social media times? Gone are the days of interacting with the community through phone campaigns and direct mailings. Today’s interaction with the community is about having conversations. The key to social media is using the right content for your organization to engage your audience, inform them about your mission, and then recruit them once you’ve built a relationship. It helps bridge the divide and enable the public to feel connected to your mission day to day. Three crucial points must be addressed when developing an effective social media usage. 1. Make a concentrated effort with your social media plan. Too often the social media efforts Forget the number of “likes” are handed off to an intern who on Facebook. These are pasis a whiz at social media but who sive forms of interaction and will only be there for a short time. do nothing to propel your Or someone at the agency who message forward. Instead has a passion for the mission but think informative moments and give your audience some- doesn’t know how to get the thing of value to share – maximum benefit from social something to talk about. media. While social media is free, it’s important to recognize that a good social media effort can take up to 25 hours a week. (Staff time is not free.) It may only take a few moments to post an update a Facebook status or a blog post, however, time needs to be spent developing content and then monitoring the interaction with followers. 2. Include social media in your long-range strategic planning and your yearly plan of work. Making social media a priority will provide the following benefits for your organization:

• Increase your brand awareness • Make new friends and • Keep the old friends • Expand email list • Boost web traffic • Converting community and membership loyalty to interactive involvement • Provide a call to action 3. Tell the story of your mission using appealing visual elements across all of your social platforms. • Ask the questions – What does our target community care about? What would make them share the content you are about to post?
A study conducted by psychologist Albert Mehrabian showed that “93% of communication is nonverbal, since visuals can be processed by the mind 60,000 times faster than text.”
• Make your fans and your membership the stars of the show. Provide creative outreach projects that recognize contributions, ideas and involvement of membership and constituents.
• Give “shout outs” to partners and supporters for their involvement with your agency. • Provide content that emotionally moves or entertains your audience. Although words are powerful and important, videos or photos earn more attention and are quicker to convey your message. The opportunity to create awareness and attract potential donors has never been greater thanks to the advent of social media tools. However, nonprofits need a solid social media plan to use the platforms effectively. Patty and Shelly are forward thinking consultants with a keen eye for the big picture. We can help you develop the strategy needed to ensure your social media activities are on target. Contact us at trainingxdesign@gmail.com or call 417-766-0459. In contrast to some management books that emphasize processes, "Seven Habits" focuses on relationships and integrity. While Covey's book presents a framework for personal effectiveness, the concepts easily translate to nonprofit leadership.
Habit 1: Be Proactive Proactive leaders are malleable, and focus on continually trying to improve their programs, efficiency and environments. Reactive ones, on the other hand, never maximize the potential of their organization because they avoid change until it’s absolutely necessary — and perhaps too late. Being proactive means focusing your time and energy on what's important. Since you don't always have control over issues or threats, take time to draw a circle that represents areas of control. Focus on these things.
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind Beginning with the end in mind is especially important for nonprofit organizations that are driven by a noble mission - eliminate hunger, eradicate AIDS, shelter the homeless, empower helpless, etc. When I travel, I often rely on my GPS and Google Maps for directions, especially when I venture into new territory. To create a map, two things are required: 1) a starting point, and 2) a final destination. It is impossible to create specific directions without both. It's not enough to tell the GPS you want to travel north or west. It demands specificity. by Dan Prater The Center for Nonprofit Communication at Drury University dprater@drury.edu
To help shape an ending point for your organization, ask yourself what a perfect world or situation would
Stephen Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" has been a worldwide success. Since its release in 1989, it has sold more than 25 million copies. The "Seven Habits" have been incorporated by organizations around the world, including many Fortune 500 companies. Former President Bill Clinton was strongly influenced by the book and invited Covey to counsel him on how to integrate the book's principles into his presidency. Clinton suggested "Seven Habits" was one of three books every American worker should read to dramatically boost the nation's productivity. 12
look like—as it relates to your mission. Once you have identified this, you'll be better able to create a step-by-step roadmap. Just like when you take a wrong turn and your GPS says "recalculating," when organizations with a clear destination veer off the path, they need leaders who can "recalculate" and help them get back on track. Warning: This may require making a few awkward twists and turns. In some cases, it could mean driving in the opposite direction you had previously been traveling.

everyone, and that success follows a co-operative approach more naturally than the confrontation of win-or-lose. In "Forces for Good," Crutchfield and McLeod-Grant found through research that the most effective nonprofit organizations reach far beyond their four walls. In fact, they help the competition succeed, building networks of nonprofit allies and devoting remarkable time and energy to advancing their larger field. They freely share wealth, expertise, talent, and power with their peers, not because they are saints, but because it's in their self-interest to do so. In the end, when one wins, they all win.
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood At first glance, this habit seems to be the simplest, but is possibly the most difficult and least practiced of all. We live in a society that continuously communicates, but often fails to listen. Facebook, Twitter and other digital tools allow us to tell others about our world, but we don't always know how the message was received.
Retreat and Review—Find a serene setting away from work to unwind and review your current lifestyle. Figure out if you are spending your time on the right tasks or are making unhealthy life choices. Schedule short breaks—Once during the workday, walk away from the grind and breath. Take 10-15 minutes for leisure reading or a walk. Once a week, give yourself permission to do something not work-related. Go to a movie or watch a ball game. Spend time with family and friends—There's nothing like playing with young children (or grandchildren) to help you gain a fresh perspective. Suddenly, the emails, phone calls and meetings don't seem quite as urgent. Exercise and make good food choices. Whether you adhere to Newton's theory of "every action has an equal and opposite reaction," or the Bible verse "whatever a man sows, that he will also reap," there is no question that the choices we make today have a direct impact on who we will be tomorrow.

History Museum On The Square
Excited About New Exhibit Planning Design Firm The History Museum on the Square is excited to announce that Gallagher & Associates, an internationally recognized museum and exhibit planning design firm, has been added to its $20 million project development team.
“The board felt it to be very important to have one of the country’s best museum and exhibit planners helping to design the museum-specific details and the exhibit experiences,” said Board President Mary McQueary. “After interviewing three of the country’s most successful consultants, they agreed Gallagher to be a perfect fit for the Museum.” Patrick Gallagher, the president and founder of Gallagher & Associates, said, “Our firm is very excited to become partners with the Springfield community to create a vision for this next generation museum complex. Located in the heart of the community, this museum has the opportunity to draw on the rich history of events that shaped the character of Springfield, from the Civil War to the coming of the Rail Road, and from the birthplace of Route 66 to the unique culture of music, arts, and industry that illuminate why at the center of the country, Springfield represents a true American experience. We are looking forward to the potential of creating a museum that will engage the visitor and motivate them to go out and discover the city and surrounding region with a new found perspective of Springfield and how it is making history every day.”
Gallagher’s has over 30 years of extensive experience including projects ranging from cultural history and natural science, to music and the arts. A few examples of their work can be seen at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, The International Spy Museum, the Reagan Presidential Library, the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, the New Mexico History Museum, the Gettysburg National Military Park and Visitor Center, the Mob Museum, and the National archives Experience. Patrick Gallagher and his associates plan to begin developing the Museum’s interpretive master plan immediately. Over the next year, they plan to execute the project alongside Casey Architecture, the Museum’s facility design firm and project manager, and John Sellars, the executive director of the Museum, as well as with the rest of the Museum’s staff and directors.

Finding Courage to Face Trauma
I Can Do Anything; Women and Empowerment Women Hold Too Few Offices It’s easy to feel frustrated when you hear the news: Women occupy too few offices in C-suites, earn too little and are underrepresented in politics. You’ve been in groups where the women gnash their teeth in outrage. Bummer, right? Au contraire! In just 10 generations women and the men who supported them have turned upside down the social order that endured for 10,000 generations. That’s astounding! So let’s step back to get this in perspective. For just a minute let’s take pride in the progress we’ve made.
Women Are Not Property Over 200,000 years ago the first anatomically modern humans appeared on earth. Stick with me here. For the past 199,800 years, women were essentially men’s property, much like a chair or a horse. They had no rights to their children, could not own property except by the grace of a father, husband or brother, nor
C l a im Your Power Re fi n e You r Life visit womenspeak.com for podcasts and blogs from Dr. Nancy.
could they get an education. Most professions were closed to them. In the United States in 1804, women were classified under Napoleonic law as minors, in the same legal category as criminals, children and the insane. Women continued to have few legal rights and little power.
Women Are Gaining Ground Today, just 10 generations later, women have become more or less equal under the law in developed nations and many developing countries. Women now rank among the richest people in the world; run huge corporations, work in every profession and outnumber men in the workplace, can marry and divorce at will, hold more college degrees than men, and hold the highest government office in many lands. Women’s organized efforts have developed the hospitals, schools, museums, libraries and social supports that enrich our communities’ civilized life. What an unprecedented transformation in the status of half the population on earth, which has also improved life for the other half. In just 10 generations, WOMEN HAVE DONE THIS FOR THEMSELVES! That’s the most important message here. Have all the battles been won? Of course not. Can women work together and join with like-minded men to continue this earth-changing progress? Of course we can. And we will.
Changing 10,000 Generations of History But let’s not beat ourselves up that we haven’t crossed the finish line. If you feel stymied sometimes, don’t feel bad. We–and our partners and our employers and our leaders–are making this up as we go along. It’s only taken ten generations of women to change the patterns of 10,000 former generations. Women—and the men who support their efforts—have never had greater opportunity. Not only White women but African American, Asian and Hispanic women have accomplished many firsts as well. Take the time to appreciate that we are better off than 10,000 generations of women, then get back to work.

One Simple Tip That Will Increase Your Productivity and Discipline by Adam Sinicki | Self Improvement Motivation |
forming new and desirable habits. This practice will then mean that when you come to try and convince yourself you need to work out every day, or that you need to stop biting your finger nails, you will have a little more mental discipline and a little more self-control. You can then build your way up to improving other more major parts of your life that you would previously have struggled with. Of course other little self-challenges will work too. If you don't care much about your bed, you could instead challenge yourself to wash the dishes straight after eating (though this is a little harder), or to eat an apple every day.
The Tip
Added Bonuses
The tip is simple: make your bed properly before you leave the house every morning. That should take you no more than a few minutes and is something that everyone can do. Still though, it can have profound impacts on your behaviour and your ability to focus. Let’s look at why…
While any challenge will work to help you become more disciplined, making your bed is a task that is just the right size and also has some added advantages. One of the biggest is that it means your room and so your house, will feel considerably tidier. Now when you set out to start working, you will feel relaxed and at ease in the space rather than claustrophobic because your room is so untidy. This makes a big difference to your mental state and you'll find it's much easier to focus.
Why This Tip Works Simply making your bed in the morning can help you to become more productive for a number of reasons, but the most important is that you will be practicing making yourself do something on a daily basis. Many of us will make sweeping resolutions to lose weight, to stop smoking or to find new jobs and be surprised when we don’t end up achieving our goals. The problem is that we underestimate just how hard it can be to introduce a new behavior or belief system. Thus we take on these huge challenges having not had the required practice in building up to them.
and Takes Two Minutes a Day
Bringing about change in our own behaviour is something that many of us struggle with. Intuitively we may believe ourselves to have dominium over our actions and thoughts, yet sometimes simple things like concentrating on a task, or giving up a bad habit can be seemingly near impossible. The idea of being able to make yourself considerably more disciplined and focused in just a few minutes a day then is one that many people might find unlikely. Nevertheless it’s precisely the fact that this tip is so easy and simple that makes it as effective as it is. Read on to unlock more of your potential – it won’t take very long…
Making your bed every morning is something that only requires a little bit of time and effort and which most of us can successfully commit to. By doing just this small thing, you have made the first step in taking control of your own behavior and
