Letter from the Editor Hello Springfield! From Breast Cancer Awareness to local event coverage, October was an exciting month for us here at Springfield CARES. But now it is November. It is steadily getting colder and we are quickly approaching the holiday season. Do not worry though. November promises to be just as exciting. In this month’s issue, we’ve got event coverage from Foundation for Springfield Public Schools’ Sip & Shop Champagne Brunch, Pregnancy Care Center’s 5K Run/Walk for Life, and OACAC’s annual Scavenger Hunt. Springfield Metro CARES welcomes new member What is your mission? Developmental Center of the Ozarks makes a positive difference in the community by providing services which enable individuals to reach and maintain their optimal level of development. What kind of volunteer opportunities do you have? How can someone get involved? We have event steering committees, event support, child care, adult technology, and a learning center program. Volunteers in each area will have unique opportunities to make a difference in the community and experience personal growth. A background check is required for those wanting help with programming prior to starting volunteer training. Those wanting to volunteer for events should call 417829-0896. Specifically, who/how do you help the community? DCO helps infants, children, and adults through daytime activities designed to help each person achieve his/her goals. In our child care program, approximately 40% of those enrolled have an identified developmental disability or delay, or a medical need that requires additional support throughout the day. Our goal is to help each child prepare for kindergarten or his/her next level of schooling. Our therapy programs help infants and children who have developmental disabilities or delays through individualized plans designed with a team of therapists. DCO is the preferred provider of First Steps Therapies in our service area. Adults with disabilities look to DCO for continued educational training, stimulating activities, quality care, and/or employment services. Could you tell a short story of someone you have helped? Just today, I was allowed the opportunity to host a respected business leader in our community on our campus. He met a young lady in one of our adult programs who is part of a group that helps prepare for lunch. He was very impressed by her work ethic, commenting that she was very sharp. She enjoys rolling silverware and getting trays in place for service. After lunch, she helps wash dishes in our commercial style
kitchen. This opportunity allows her to prepare for other opportunities beyond the DCO center-based program. It also allows her to earn a paycheck. There's also a young child in our child care program who is a very early preschooler. She is recognizing complex shapes, identifying colors and letters, and is also a wonderful helper in the classroom. She is also using her manners (please, thank you, excuse me, and you're welcome) at the appropriate time. And yet there is another child (age 20 months) in our therapy program learning how to use a spoon to feed himself. Having control of utensils and manipulating food in his mouth have been two goals that were identified by both his parents and therapy team...and he's THIS CLOSE to being able to feed himself independently all the time. If you could thank one person/business in the community that has shown that they CARE, who would it be and why? This is tough because we love and respect so many people and businesses that support DCO. We have an incredible Board of Directors who dedicate their hearts, time, skills, connections, and financial gifts to our mission. Without their support, we couldn't ask anyone else to share with us. If you avoided disaster such as fire, flooding, tornado, and earthquake this year you have four reasons to be thankful. If like us, you did not, then you have thousands of reasons to be thankful. The American Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides food and shelter, and health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Red Cross is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes, working in
partnership with other agencies and organizations, to provide services to disaster victims. It is with great joy that we announce that the Bridges For Youth Center at 1230 W. Madison, after nearly four years, now includes the sounds of children.
We give thanks to our wonderful supporters and prayer partners for believing in this work. Nearly four years ago, we started this $150,000 project with zero dollars and faith that God can do anything. Indeed, the completion of the Madison Center and opening it for the kids has been a miracle of Biblical proportions. How to Hire an
Executive Director by Dan Prater The Center for Nonprofit Communication at Drury University dprater@drury.edu
When Anne joined the board of a local nonprofit, she was eager to become active in helping the organization succeed. She was confident her skills as a business owner would be a great asset to this small operation. Six months after joining the board, Anne was shocked when the organization's long-time executive director announced her sudden resignation. The other board members, recognizing Anne's business savvy and passion for the cause, asked her to temporarily take over the organization's day-to-day activities while they searched for a new director. Six weeks later, Anne was still serving as the interim head of the nonprofit, and seemed to be handling the responsibilities without any problems. The board members were impressed with Anne and decided there was no need to look at other candidates. Instead, they offered her the position. She accepted the job and became the new executive director. Within six months, things began to unravel for Anne. She had never managed a staff, and she had no experience doing public relations or fundraising. This nonprofit scenario is not uncommon. Organizations—especially smaller ones—have a tendency to hire the first person who is willing to fill the position, even though the candidate's credentials may be less than impressive. The board fails to take the proper steps required to find the right person for the job. This process failure can lead to ambiguity, unmet expectations, and high turnover. Every organization, regardless of their size or the nature of their work, should exercise utmost caution when hiring an executive director (or whatever title you assign to the job). The position is simply too critical to take any other approach. Here are seven important steps that will help ensure you find the best candidate:
1. Don't rush the process. Too often boards rush to hire the first warm body that walks through the door. In an effort to bring stability and leadership back to the organization, boards don't allow ample time to conduct a proper search. While the hiring process can be painful, it pales in comparison to the pain of having the wrong person attempting to lead the organization. The amount of time needed to locate and hire a good candidate varies from organization to organization. But generally, allow a minimum of 4-6 weeks for the process.
2. Develop a Search Team. A CEO search is a high-risk venture that requires input from many individuals. A Search Team may include staff, board, HR professionals, community partners, and volunteers. In some cases, a funder may also sit on this team. www.NPcomm.org

This structure provides a lot of “buy-in,” or distributed engagement, in the process, as well as providing many people to shoulder the work of the search.
3. Figure out who you need. Develop a profile of the person you want, identifying the skills, knowledge, and characteristics you feel best match your organization—then proactively search for this individual rather than simply hoping the right person sees the vacancy and applies. Don't be shy about asking someone who is already leading a different organization. You never know who might be considering a career move. By determining precisely the kind of person who could best lead your organization, you will be able to quickly sort through candidates. It is likely that many of the candidates applying for the job will have appealing qualifications. But with a clear list of desirable traits, your organization will be able to find the person who comes closest to having the unique set of assets that your agency needs.
4. Look inward and outward. Many companies have a policy of promoting within. While this approach has benefits – especially for organizations with young, promising leaders, it can also create dilemmas. Moving from one role to another can be difficult for everyone, including those that may have to view a once-colleague as the new boss.
Another downfall of hiring within is incestuous intelligence. Some organizations fear change and go to great lengths to avoid progressive thinkers who might challenge their traditional way of doing business. To "protect" themselves from outsiders, they hire only those who look, talk, and think just like they do. All others are shunned. There are, however, potential advantages to hiring an insider. The person is likely to understand the organization's culture, and have developed relationships of trust with current board members and community leaders. With this type of individual, the transition period could be much quicker and smoother than it would be for someone with no previous institutional knowledge.
5. Provide a clear description/expectations. Most nonprofit leaders, especially those in small organizations, will tell you their job responsibilities are "doing everything" from raising money to stuffing envelopes or taking out the trash! It may not be possible to have a job description that encompasses everything (that's why we insert "and other duties as assigned"), but the clearer you can be about the job expectations, the better chance the candidates will have of understanding if the job is the right match for their skill set. If your organization is in need of someone to clean up the accounting, you'll want to be clear about this. Or, if you really need a dynamic public speaker or someone who can write grant proposals, make sure this is stated and understood by the candidates.
6. Be transparent. You and your board are eager to hire the best person, so it is only natural to portray your organization in the best possible light. Yet there is an ethical responsibility to disclose to candidates (not in the initial interview) the organization's true condition. This includes information on finances, legal issues, personnel issues, history and reputation in the community, and any other matter that is pertinent to someone who may step into the organization's top position. It is unfair to hire someone under false pretense, failing to provide an accurate and honest snapshot of the organization's condition. 7. Conduct background and reference checks. Hiring a new employee—especially one who will be the face of the entire organization— requires a thorough background check. As an employer, you have the right and responsibility to learn as much as possible about this person BEFORE offering the job. Amazingly, there are still organizations today that fail to do adequate checks, only to discover later that the person has a problematic background. A thorough background check should include credit history, criminal record, past employers, and personal references. Each state has labor laws dictating what an employer can check. Most laws generally require the employer to make certain disclosures to the applicant to be checked, and to obtain the written or electronic consent of the person to be checked prior to conducting the check. While these seven steps cannot guarantee your next hire will be the perfect employee, they can provide a framework for navigating this process and finding you a strong leader for your organization.

Sheila’s story begins on a familiar note. She wanted a horse and annoyed her parents until she got one at age 8. She recalls years of lying on her horse’s back, reading The Black Stallion and other Walter Farley books, and dreaming of riding beautiful Arabian horses. She was tall and awkward and riding a horse gave her confidence she couldn’t find anywhere else. She felt a closer connection with animals––and especially horses––than she felt with people. She feels fortunate that her parents didn’t have the money to buy a superstar horse to start the breeding program, Sheila says. They gave her love and support that was more valuable to her long-term success. Sheila learned about conformation and other things about the business from the ground up. She cleaned out stalls, trimmed horses feet, drove the big trucks, and even did her own advertising. Sheila says training extraordinary horses starts with choosing the right horses. The Varian bloodline is selected for character as well as beauty. She chose Arabians, not only because of the Farley books, but also because they have the closest relationship with people. They were bred to live with Bedouin families in the desert and those traits remain strong today. Domesticated horses intuit our needs. While the Arabian breed may be hot blooded, Sheila says it’s the only horse that will leave its food to greet you.

Still, they are horses, so at Sheila’s barn, young Arabians spend a lot of time with other horses to understand how to behave in the herd. Then they are trained with soft techniques and clear instructions so they won’t be confused in the process. She compares it to teaching a child good manners. When she sells one of her Arabians, the new owners are taught the process: gentle treatment, trust and confidence, boundaries and rules.

FLiP proudly supports the Weekend Backpack Program by partnering with the Ozarks Food Harvest. The program works to provide at-risk children with backpacks full of nutritious food over the weekend. FLiP runs The Suit Yourself Boutique, which provides women entering or re-entering the workforce with workplace or interview attire. These women are then able to start a new life-chapter with positive self-esteem, knowing that they are working to create a better life. Since its inception in 2006, the Suit Yourself Boutique has provided clothing and confidence to over 2,900 women in our community.

The Grapevine Rain or Shine? That’s what Pregnancy Care Center posted on facebook the day prior to their annual Walk for Life, and they were not kidding! The fall-like rainy weather didn’t stop a great group of runners from participating. Collaboration Among Related Agencies Helps to Move the Coffeys Toward Self-Sufficiency The road started out full of bumps and curves. During the first part of 2012 while living in Diamond, MO, Mrs. Coffey lost her job due to illness and Mr. Coffey had to address a legal situation. After serving 40 days in jail, Mr. Coffey found a job in Springfield, where he commuted back and forth. But the couple got behind on their rent and lost their home in Diamond. They then moved to Springfield and lived at a weekly rental until Mr. Coffey's employment was terminated, leaving them homeless. Mr. Coffey moved into the Victory Mission and Mrs. Coffey went to stay at Safe to Sleep. For two weeks, Mrs. Coffey called the Salvation Army and Missouri Hotel to try and obtain shelter. Finally, the door opened for them to reside at the Salvation Army. Through a partnership with Salvation Army, Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation (OACAC) was able to offer a life skills class at its Greene County Center called "Journeying to a Career." The Coffeys attended the class, signed up for case management, and established goals for employment, transportation, and housing. Although the Coffeys had a vehicle, it desperately needed repairs. Their goal was to use it to assist their employment search as the bus routes were limited. The OACAC Greene County Center connected the Coffey’s with GearHead Ministries, which provides vehicle repairs to low-income individuals. Unfortunately, the mechanics determined that their car could not be repaired. Because they could not repair their vehicle, GearHead Ministries blessed the Coffeys with a 1994 Oldsmobile in good working condition. Through the assistance of the Greene County Center's Emergency Funds, the Coffeys were able to obtain the vehicle and proceed with licensing and insuring it. To help with the on-going expenses of car ownership, OACAC also gave them information about Bryles Research to obtain income for gasoline and other expenses. Mr. Coffey applied and participated in a paid survey for the upcoming health reform.
Before obtaining dependable transportation, Mr. Coffey applied online for employment. However, within a few weeks after obtaining the car, he applied in person at Northeastern Diesel Services and was hired the same day. OACAC then secured a gasoline voucher through the Greene County Center’s emergency dollars to help until Mr. Coffey obtained his first paycheck. OACAC also gave the Coffey’s a list of all subsidized housing in Greene County. The couple completed the poverty simulation training and plans to volunteer soon. It is clear to see that a small donation to the Greene County Emergency Fund helped this couple move from employment seeking to fully employed. OACAC Case Management services helped to support them throughout their journey and soon the Coffeys will be self-sufficient. OACAC was founded in November of 1965 as a private nonprofit corporation to help low-income families become self-sufficient. OACAC sponsors Family Planning, Foster Grandparents, Head Start, Housing Assistance, LIHEAP, Neighborhood Centers, and Weatherization programs. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine each year to protect against the flu virus. s Stay home when sick If possible, keep kids home from school when they are sick to help prevent teachers and classmates from catching their illness. {s Sing and scrub Make sure kids wash their hands the right way. They should wash frequently with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice).

school year has started and as many parents know, kids are likely to bring home more than their homework at some point. Many catch cold and flu viruses from their classmates, which can then spread to other family members at home. When kids are sick, they miss out on valuable learning experiences and social interactions in the classroom. On average, elementary school children get eight to 12 colds or cases of the flu each school year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For the older kids, it is about half that. That's why it's important that parents, teachers, and kids work together to stop the spread of germs in the classroom. Everyone can follow these simple steps to help prevent the spread of germs that can cause cold and flu viruses this school year:
s Do the elbow cough Teach kids to cough into elbows, not hands, since hands are more likely to spread bacteria and viruses through touch. s Disinfect germ hot spots The CDC recommends disinfecting frequently touched surfaces or objects when someone is ill. In the classroom teachers can use a disinfectant approved to kill cold and flu viruses on desks, computer mice, and doorknobs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Creating a healthier learning environment starts with small actions that add up to a big impact,â&#x20AC;? says Dr. Howell Wechsler, CEO of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children thrive. "Parents play an important role and can lend a hand to teachers by reinforcing healthy lessons at home and donating useful items like tissues, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes."

Hundreds braved stormy weather to walk in support of expectant moms and babies. Pregnancy Care Center hosted its 12th annual 5K Run & Walk for Life on Saturday, October 5th at Jordan Valley Park in Springfield. Despite the stormy weather, more than 1,000 participants came out to help raise over $103,000 for young families in need in Southwest Missouri. “This is why Pregnancy Care Center is here! To serve young people in the community and help build stronger and healthier children and families,” explains Cindi Boston, CEO of Pregnancy Care Center. “100% of the money goes to client programs. These are programs that help young expecting parents prepare for parenthood or adoption. it’s exciting to see so many people get out and rally to help those in need.” All the proceeds from the event will help provide vital health, wellness, and relationship education for more than 21,000 young people in Southwest Missouri in the next year! Hunt A great time was held by all as teams competed against one another, scurrying around the Springfield downtown area in hopes of solving clues such as “Do you know where this ‘cup’ is edible?” and “Do you know where elephants and clowns play together?” The funds raised from OACAC’s Annual Scavenger Hunt were given to the Greene County Emergency Fund to help families in crisis by providing emergency food, prescription medications, medical needs, transportation, housing, utilities, legal assistance, and disaster relief. OACAC would like to thank the many Springfield business owners who generously donated prizes to this year’s event. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams went home with some great prizes and all of the participants had fun helping out their neighbors in need.
