As I step into the role of HBA President, I’m excited to continue the momentum we built in 2024. Our annual HBA Home Show at Wilson Logistics Arena was a tremendous success, bringing members, businesses and the community together in a way that showcased the strength of our association.

We’re also building an exceptional team to help us take the HBA to new heights. Chelsey Taylor has stepped into the member relations specialist role, Courtnie Pettigrew has joined as our special events coordinator and Ashley Rosetta is our new administrative assistant. Under the leadership of our Executive Officer Laurie Soulsby, this team is focused on delivering greater value for our members and creating lasting community impact in 2025.

A key focus for the HBA this year will be workforce development. The construction industry faces a labor shortage as seasoned professionals retire and fewer young people pursue careers in the trades. But this challenge presents a tremendous opportunity—to inspire the next generation and show them that the trades offer fulfilling, lifelong careers built on skill, craftsmanship and community impact.

A SPACE FOR EVERYONE

Many Spring eld builders have seen a rise in families requesting homes with separate mother-in-law quarters. Designer and builder JJ Hetherington has addressed this need with the completion of his multigenerational home in Canopy, an eco-friendly development along the Dry Sac River Corridor and Fulbright Spring Greenway in North Spring eld. “Homes thoughtfully planned to accommodate multigenerational living are becoming a great option as we confront an aging population and can help address problems caused both by our increasing isolation from community and from nature,” Hetherington says. “Homeowners have been adding to their design program a space in which they can house a family member regardless of age, without feeling as though they have a family member living with them.”

After experiencing the lack of privacy, for his family and a guest in his own home, Hetherington quickly understood the importance of providing the quality of living needed for his family and their guests to feel independent from each other. “While we thoroughly

enjoyed and welcomed family members to stay in our current home, it became apparent that we not only needed more privacy, but our guest family member also needed more privacy,” Hetherington says.

His new multigenerational home is designed on two levels with a split entry that serves the lower and upper levels and a shared space. “Think of it as a stacked duplex with a common space that allows for family gatherings and private spaces that allow for family members to retreat to their own space,” Hetherington says.

The home is also designed to change over time and with the needs of the family, with the lower level currently having a bedroom, large living area, bathroom, wet bar, laundry hookups, private patio and separate entrance from the main split-level entry. “This allows for a family member or guest to come and go without disturbing others,” Hetherington says. “The wet bar can easily be converted to a kitchen by simply adding additional cabinets and appliances. The large living area can easily be converted to a smaller living area and second bedroom.”

The top level has two sections. “One half of the upper level has a bedroom, large closet, bathroom, large laundry room, o ce and private deck,” Hetherington says. The upper level has an o ce that can easily be converted to a private living room. The large closet can turn into a second bedroom with smaller closets and the laundry can be converted to a kitchen with a laundry closet. “To pull o the easy space conversations, the design has to accommodate mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems, additional wall framing or removal, plus future expansion such as another private living space,” Hetherington says.

Home design is more than just creating spaces. Hetherington believes strongly in the positive impacts of accommodating multigenerational living in the homes he designs and builds. “The long-term vision includes building homes and communities that are attainable, accessible and allow for privacy, community and enjoyment of the natural environment,” he says. “Such homes must be sustainable and provide bene ts for all people regardless of age, ability or income.”

Witnessing your dream home come to life is extraordinary, but the process can feel overwhelming. Austin Miller of Wise-Built Custom Homes and John Marion, founder and CEO of John Marion Custom Homes shed light on what to expect when building a custom home.

How much does it cost to build a custom home?

AUSTIN MILLER: Most home builders won’t answer the question. It ranges based on custom versus specs or lake house versus starter home and so on. There is no rule of thumb for a blueprint of a house anymore and instead of getting frustrated with that question, why not create a resource and do something di erent? So, now when people ask, I say, “Well I’m glad you asked because I have a resource, and it’s free.” The Cost Calculator (wise-built.com/ cost-calculator) takes ve minutes to ll out, and it will spit out a cost per square foot.

Where do I start?

A.M.: The owchart [I created] is a tool that lays out the general sequence of events and a simple visual to help people. This process can be overwhelming. You have to eat the apple one bite at a time and trust the process.

What do people need to know about building a quality custom home?

JOHN MARION: When building a custom home, people should focus on a few key factors

to ensure a successful experience. First, choosing the right builder is crucial; they should look for someone who aligns with their vision and has a track record of quality work. Budget planning is another major factor—understanding where to invest and where to save can make a big di erence in both cost and satisfaction. It’s also essential to consider lifestyle needs and long-term functionality; a custom home should adapt to family changes over time.

Communication and transparency are equally important throughout the process. By maintaining a strong, open relationship with their builder, clients can avoid common misunderstandings and keep the project on track. My book, Building A Quality Custom Home – What You Need to Know, is a user-friendly guide that equips readers with essential knowledge for navigating the custom home-building journey. ustin Frese laughs when he talks about how he ended up swinging a hammer for a living. “I got into construction because Dad was in it,” he says. “He was building houses during the summer when he was a teacher, and I got an early introduction to construction but didn’t have a lot of choice in it. But those skills have stayed with me forever.”

Today, Frese is a construction technology instructor at Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC), helping the next generation of construction workers gain the skills to pursue lucrative, long-term careers. OTC students can earn a construction technology certi cate in nine months or pursue a two-year associate’s degree for more opportunities.

Over at Missouri State University (MSU), the construction management program provides foundational knowledge and hands-on experience. Certi cations and apprenticeships are valuable for building practical skills. JaLynn Hill, an instructor at MSU, is an alumna of the Construction, Design and Project Management Department with a degree in construction management. Hill has over 10 years of industry experience and returned to her alma mater to share her insights and help shape the next generation of construction professionals.

Frese and Hill share four reasons hard workers should consider a career in construction.

CONSTRUCTION IS FULL OF OPPORTUNITIES

From the foundation to the nishes, every aspect of residential construction is hiring, with lots of local jobs to choose from. “The construction industry o ers a wide range of career paths, from project management and design to skilled trades like carpentry and plumbing,” Hill says. “This diversity means there’s something for everyone, whether you enjoy handson work or prefer more analytical roles.”

CONSTRUCTION SKILLS ARE TRANSFERRABLE

Construction skills are versatile—they go with you wherever you go, in any season. When Frese was younger, he used construction jobs to travel and fund his winter hobby: rock climbing. These skills can also open doors to future opportunities. “Construction as a temporary job provides good wages with exibility while learning valuable skills that can transfer to a next career,” he says. “Easily accessible jobs after a career in construction can include HVAC, electrical or welding—all high-paying

jobs that aren’t impacted by the weather and can be attained with a credential from OTC.”

IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES

A career in construction o ers not only practical skills but also the chance to create lasting, meaningful work that impacts communities in visible ways. “Construction professionals play a crucial role in shaping the built environment,” Hill says. “Building schools, hospitals and homes not only contributes to the economy but also positively a ects people’s lives. This sense of purpose can be very ful lling.”

STABLE WORK FOR A LONG-TERM CAREER

The residential construction industry is stable, the opportunities are limitless and a career in construction is what you make it, Frese says. “If you get into a construction company at 20 years old, the opportunity to move up is endless,” he says. “With construction, the skilled laborer has the opportunity to determine their level of success. If you work hard and stay within a company, you can advance and even become an executive, or you can keep working on a job site. Your career in construction can be as long as you’re willing to work.”

A GUIDE TO CHOOSING the Right Builder

President of HBA’s Board of Directors Aaron Wyssmann discusses the most-asked questions from homeowners as they search for a builder who is right for them.

“Are you licensed and insured?”

AARON WYSSMANN: In the State of Missouri there is no such a thing as licensure for contractors, but in some of the di erent municipalities that we build they do require it, but even then, it is simply lling out an application and paying a fee. This is why I believe very much in our local HBA in that we do vet each builder before allowing them to become a member. They must be in good standing in our community and have worker’s compensation insurance. I don’t believe consumers should be hiring a builder that isn’t part of the HBA. There is too much risk in my opinion.

“How do you approach communication before, during and after the project?”

A.W.: We believe communication is of the utmost importance and is a huge determinant of success with our clients [At Alair]. All our client and team communication within our

o ce is done through the Microsoft Teams platform; this gives everyone one point of contact. During our Planning Phase our clients get to work rsthand with our interior designer, Kara, who walks our clients through the selection process. Kara has a weekly meeting with each client and sends out a weekly Teams progress report. As the project is handed o in the Construction Phase to one of our project managers, they continue with this same weekly cadence. After a project is completed, we have set check-ins at three, six, nine and 12 months to be sure that everything with the home is as it should be.

“Do you provide a detailed estimate of the costs?”

A.W.: Yes, we do provide our clients with a copy of every cost that goes into their home. During the planning phase, we set up an Alair portal for each client. In their portal we will upload a copy of every scope of work and quote

received for a budget line item. This allows our clients the ability to be in control of how their home will be built and their budget. A similar process is followed in the Construction Phase in that every invoice for the client’s home is uploaded into their portal. Our system is built to be a fully transparent process. We believe this is the only way a home should ever be built, with full visibility by our clients into the biggest nancial investment most of them will ever have.

Moving into their new house meant more than a simple change of address for Megan and Thad Forrester—it was the realization of a long-held dream. Built on the land where Megan grew up, the home sits on a beloved stretch of family farm, where she spent her childhood exploring the dry creek bed. “Our end game has always been to build out here,” she says. “We’ve been married 20 years and have always dreamed of this. We both wanted to raise our kids in the country with room to run.”

To make this vision a reality, Megan and Thad partnered with Austin Miller of Wise-Built Custom Homes. “We met with several builders, but Austin just felt right from the start,” Megan says. “I believe with all my heart that he truly wanted to give us the home we envisioned.”

Their new house has quickly become a haven for their family of six, blending practicality with personality. Megan’s favorite spot is the library, with its oor-to-ceiling bookshelves and cozy reading

chair, a perfect retreat for quiet moments. She also loves the custom kitchen island, inspired by a beautiful soapstone and reclaimed wood island she saw in an Airbnb.

Thad has his own retreat in the basement with a dedicated workout space, and he often nds himself on the back porch, enjoying the peace and quiet. As a barber, he loves giving haircuts to friends and family while overlooking the property.

The backyard was designed with their four kids in mind, complete with a climbing dome and trampoline. The kids’ area is hidden from the front of the house. “It’s great to have a place for kids to play without cluttering up the view,” Megan says.

Even though they had been on-site throughout the build, their moving day felt especially meaningful. “It felt like we were supposed to be here all along,” Megan says. The Forrester family has since embraced life on their 20 acres and has big plans for the future, including a pool—turning this house into their forever home.
