AnalyzeRadios In the first class, we start to analyze different kind of radios, find out who would be the user, when was it being built, what situation it can be used, where should it be used, why it been produced, and how to use it, so that we can have a rough idea of how to approach our final design in the first step.

Who: spy, soldier, prisoner, science geeks, school kids When: 1940s, now What: cheap, woody Why: in a hurry Where: war field, lab, classroom How: hard to control, easy to broke

RadioMaking SzuchiWang

In this class, we try to build a working prototype radio to know what radios content and how them opparate, so we can be realistic when we do the ďŹ nal project. I made some improvement of my radio trying to make it work, like replaced the wire with a fork to receive better signals, change the power source from battery to plug in order to have stable power supply, but the radio still failed to sound recognizably and crack all the time.

OneDayInLondon In the day in London, we visited science museum and Liverpool Street to study details of radios and human behavior in public space. In science museum, I had a whole view of the development of comunication technology, and have a close look at how form follows function when radios been developed. In which I could have more complete ideas of what details should I mind when designing specific kind of radio. Later on we moved to Liverpool Street Station to observe human behavior in public areas, we took photos of how people interact with things that didn’t suppose to be used that way and what kind things that people would use it for, then we could find out design opportunities for final project, public radio.

We took a afternoon to observe people from Liverpool Street to get some ideas for radio design, after that we analysis all the photo we took to generate problems and opportunities that can be used on ďŹ nal project.

StreetExperience&Analysis

Big ideas - Way finding - people have difficulties to find way to buy tickets - Bright color - catch people’s attention for some specific information - People sit everywhere - people like to lean against everything they can reach - Communicate - transport stations full of complicated information that people need to have someone explain to them - Sign - lots of sign are confusing and misguide people

Base on the big ideas gotten from street experience, we started to draw story board for public radio design. First we practice drawing story for topic like “control” and “toy”, then tried to find the brief for our own project.

The sketching class was aim to let us have the basic sketching skill to communicate our ideas as a product designer. Actually I never sketch something so serious like this, so it was a wonderful experience for me to learn how to sketch like a designer.

ModelMaking1 SzuchiWang

The aim of first model making class is “quick & dirty”, means that we need to learn how to make very rough model to test out the feeling, the size or whether it is suitable for human use. From this class I tried out multiple matirials to improve my models in a fast way, and also found out that from this quick & dirty model, I could easily spot out the problems in my design and change it immediately.

ModelMaking2

The secondary model making was learning how to make model out of foam precisely, ďŹ rst we needed to measure the size of the product and drawn out the templates, then we stuck the templates on the foam and use foam cutter to shape it, after that used sand paper to ďŹ nish the surface and chisel to carve the details. From this class, after failed several times, I learned how to control foam well while using tools toward it, and also learned how to draw the template in the safest way so that I still had chance to ďŹ x the model.

ModelMaking3 The third model making class was base on the skills that we learned in second class and used that to build our own model. My ďŹ nal project is a warning radio which is used in construction site to warn people don’t come across by low frequent noise.

SzuchiWang

Because this radio need to work at construction site so it should have strong protection arond main body, and buttons should be big enough for workers to push because they all wear gloves.

SzuchiWang

This model was so hard to make by foam because of the protection arond the main body which I broke several times, but after all this is so far my best foam model ever !

ScenarioActing

After we finished the final model, we should make out a story board which was capable to communicate our concept with other people, so that was what scenario acting about. And by real acting, we could find out some problems in our design. The aim of my public radio was keeping people away from danger, so the first scene was showing that people would feel uncomfortable about the low friquent noise that come from the radio. SzuchiWang

This image shows that there is a low friquent radio in a construction site and people are walking close to it.

This image shows that the low friquent noise operates like a invisible wall and people can feel it when they are nearby.

SzuchiWang

This image shows that because of the noise, people tend to move far away from the contruction site.

This image shows that the reason why people want to run away form construction site is because that feel uncomfortable. (by facial expression)
