City living beckons in downtown Overland Park
B O O M E R S A R E O P T I N G to leave their suburban homes in favor of moving to vibrant downtown dwellings, according to a February 2018 story published by AARP. Avenue 81 is a prime example. This new luxury independent and assisted living retirement community opens next spring in downtown Overland Park. Amid an enticing mix of shops, restaurants and beloved destinations such as the Overland Park Farmers Market, Avenue 81 offers modern services and amenities to help keep residents active, fulfilled and healthy. Those services include on-site assisted living, should residents need that option. Downtown living is often thought of as expensive — sometimes prohibitively so. Yet at Avenue 81, residents don’t pay an entry fee. And with an exciting selection of floor plans that include studios and one- and two-bedroom apartment homes, prospective residents are sure to find the perfect fit. Just think: This time next year, you could step out of your newly built apartment home and stroll to the Overland Park Farmers Market to pick fresh produce for dinner. Or enjoy a favorite event, downtown Overland Park’s Third Fridays. The Matt Ross Community Center is nearby, too. And you could live in the middle of it all! ORE

A new kind of practice brings relief within reach

H R O N I C P A I N A F F E C T S approximately 50 million people in the U.S., according to the CDC. What’s more, chronic pain contributes to around $560 billion annually in direct medical costs, lost productivity and disability programs, as reported by MedPage Today. Now there’s a better solution. Overland Park-based Ageless Life Regenerative Medicine & More uses innovative techniques such as fluoroscopy-guided imaging for more accurate, effective treatments. Co-founders Sri Nalamachu and Dan Kloster have also introduced a self-pay practice that enables clients to pay out of pocket or with Health Savings Accounts, which, in some cases, are a more affordable alternative to high-deductible medical coverage. Ageless Life’s services include regenerative medicine with Predictive Biotech products for minimally invasive procedures that optimize the body’s ability to heal itself. Kloster is currently the only physician in the Kansas City area that performs the regenerative lumbar procedure, in addition to knee, hip and shoulder. Other services include epidurals, joint injections, and screening and diagnostic exams. No matter which service clients choose, Kloster and Nalamachu will educate them on current pain management therapies so they can be more proactive in their own care. “We strongly believe that every individual should live to their fullest potential,” Kloster says. “We’re here to help you make that possible.”

Retirement redefined: Live life to the fullest in southern Johnson County
Retirement community meets health care
T
community in Overland Park has a fitting tagline: “Add more living to your life.” All it takes is one look at Tallgrass Creek’s activities and amenities to see just how fulfilling life can be at this senior living campus. Do you love traveling? Hiking? Woodworking? Reading? Singing? Chances are there’s a club at Tallgrass Creek to help nurture your interests and introduce you to neighbors who share your passions. Of course, life at Tallgrass Creek isn’t complete without a home. One- and two-bedroom apartments are available. And if your needs change, Tallgrass Creek also offers continuing care residences, including assisted living apartment homes and carefully designed memory care suites. This emphasis on living life to the fullest, which includes providing easy access to health care, has helped the community’s developer, The Erickson Living Group, emerge as an industry leader in redefining retirement living. An emphasis on technology makes life at Tallgrass Creek even easier. The new My Erickson App, for example, gives residents and their families access to Tallgrass Creek’s menus, transportation schedules, meal balances and resident and staff directories. There’s another reason that Tallgrass Creek’s capacity hovers over 90 percent — the people. Friendly residents and staff members instantly put new residents at ease and make them feel at home. “All the residents are smiling and laughing,” a new Tallgrass Creek resident says. “You can tell the employees really care about their residents. From the first moment, I knew I was going to fit right in.”

O R E T H A N 30 years ago, Tutera Senior Living & Health Care was founded by a physician who advocated compassionate patient care, uncompromising standards and loyalty to family. Today, the locally owned and operated company is recognized as one of the nation’s premier providers of senior health care. With 16 of its 47 facilities in the Kansas City area, Tutera Senior Living & Health Care provides a spectrum of services including independent living, assisted living skilled nursing, rehabilitation, memory care, home health care and hospice. Its YOUNITE concept of patient interaction combines the terms “You” and “Unite” to represent the connection between an individual and their surroundings that affect their overall well-being and sense of satisfaction. Is it time to see a periodontist?
D
the following concerns sound familiar: bleeding or swollen gums, loose teeth, persistent bad breath, loose dentures or partial dentures that won’t stay put, uneven or receding gums or gum lines, or dental implants that are having complications or failing? If you’ve experienced any of these issues (or have similar concerns), it may be time to reach out to Newhouse Periodontics. Led by Nancy Newhouse, Newhouse Periodontics offers a range of services that encompass the best that science and dentistry have to offer. Curious about how a periodontist differs from a typical dental practice? A periodontist has additional specialty training to become an expert in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) diseases; placement and maintenance of dental implants; and the diagnosis and treatment of problems associated with the bone and soft tissues of the mouth that affect your smile and the way you look. When you work with a periodontist like Newhouse, you can also stay ahead of possible health concerns that are linked to oral health, including stroke and heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems and Alzheimer’s disease. Her knowledgeable, caring staff delivers personalized, attentive care to every patient, ensuring all of their needs are met. You can rest assured that Newhouse and her staff will follow up with any concerns or questions and do what they can to help you achieve optimal oral health and, by extension, an ideal quality of life.

Rehabilitation in a resort setting
D
E A L I NG W I T H health issues as we get older is tough enough. Doing so in a traditional hospital setting can make the recovery process even more difficult. Now, imagine the opposite experience, where you receive the rehabilitation, skilled nursing and assisted living that you need in a health facility that offers a full suite of concierge services in an atmosphere of relaxation and rejuvenation that you’d expect at a five-star resort. This is the philosophy at The Healthcare Resort of Leawood, where their tagline is “Less hospital, more hospitality.” “When I first arrived here, they went above and beyond making sure I was comfortable,” says Larry Hill, who underwent rehab after having his left leg amputated. “In physical therapy, the Berihab treatment platform has made all the difference in my rehabilitation.” A massive stroke left Bonnie Clauder completely paralyzed when she was brought to The Healthcare Resort of Leawood last December. Seven doctors said she’d never walk again, but today she is walking with the aid of a cane and will return home in a few weeks. “The (staff) has been absolutely wonderful to me here,” Clauder says. “They’ve helped me with my makeup and hair and taught me how to do my cooking and housekeeping. If you can imagine it, they can help you attain it.”

Put these three exercises on your to-do list
T A Y I N G A C T I V E is more important than ever as you age to keep your muscles, joints and bones in good health. Of course, it’s doing the exercise that’s the hard part! The good news: You don’t need to work out until you drop to get results. Instead, make sure these effective exercises are part of your daily or weekly routine. YOGA: With so many types of yoga available, you’ll be able to find a style of practice that you love. If you’re new to yoga, look for a studio that offers restorative or chair yoga. Restorative yoga is a series of slow stretches with an emphasis on relaxing both your mind and body. Chair yoga includes modified poses that you can do seated or standing. STRENGTH TR A INING: Maintain or increase your muscle strength with regular strength training. If you have access to a gym or community center, try handheld weights or strength training equipment. Most gyms offer an orientation to help you learn how to use the machinery. Or opt for resistance bands, which you can easily stash at home or work. Use your resistance band for exercises like bicep curls, bent-over rows, lunges and kickbacks to work your arms and legs. BA L A NCE: We know balance is important, but it’s not something most of us actively improve. Better balance helps prevent slipping and falling, and you can work on your balance with these do-anywhere exercises. First, stand near a wall or chair and see how long you can balance on one foot before steadying yourself. Next, during a walk, adjust your gait so you’re walking heel to toe, which strengthens your legs. Put your right foot directly in front of your left foot so your right heel touches your left toes. Then move your left foot in front of your right while putting weight into your left heel, then shift your weight to your toes. Try to repeat for 20 steps, then add more steps as your strength increases.
