In this issue we are proud to introduce four of our winning artists who received the prize "artist of the month", granted to members of The Association of Women's Art and Gender Research in Israel. In the next issues we will introduce additional artists, aiming to unfold the rich variety of artists, techniques and themes that women artists in Israel are engaged in. This issue of 44 Degrees is in collaboration with The Association of Women's Art and Gender Research in Israel. The main goals of the association, established in 2015, are to encourage the research of women artists in Israel. We also aim to serve as facilitators to contemporary women artists who are in need – by organizing events, shows, prizes and residencies, alongside helping them with networking, and by supporting scholarship about artistic activity. The association welcomes researches, artists, curators and art lovers of all genders and ages, from any religion, ethnicity, or nationality. Our hope is to have many members join us (please visit our website: https://www.womenartandgender.com/) I would like to deeply thank the editor, Tammy Mike Laufer, founder of 44 Degrees, for the opportunity to collaborate with the Association of Women's Art and Gender Research in Israel, and we look forward to a fruitful dialogue about women, art and gender-relations in the Israeli arts.

YASMIN GUR My goal it is to create objects that evoke an immediate emotional response and engagement. As the daughter of an architect and a painter, growing up in a desert town in Israel, I developed and early and abiding love for the built structures of my surroundings. I enjoy taking a structure that has a specific function and supplanting its functional identity with an emotional one. In creating this emotional character to the work, I am inspired by the structures of nature and have in mind the works’ relation to a human audience. My works are built with reclaimed material. In using these weathered materials, I am appropriating their histories, the wear and tear of the elements, the bending, rips, flaking, and rust, to create a wordless connection, a bloom, a burst, an outgrowth, to evoke a living process of an organism or plant. www.yasmingur.com yg.artbizfusion@gmail.com

URI BATSON This selected works are part of an ongoing series in which I was examining unreached place, such as mountain top or euphoric landscape in the distance. The longing of Man/Woman to go and explore distant places is the key note for this selection. I’ve worked with variant types of Mediums and techniques in order to really try to expand the boundaries of painting as a medium, From Using it in a classic matter or cut it and reshape it as a sculpture. A place, like a painting, can be filled with Subject and it can also be a reflection of a distant idea. It can be our everyday surrounding or it can be our fantasy. www.batson.carbonmade.com batsonuri@gmail.com

TAMMY MIKE LAUFER I am an international contemporary digital artist and art director, engaged in digital media and presents projects of video art and digital paintings based on 3D in galleries and museums around the world. My works are similar to mental puzzles, where you can travel from one point to another by analyzing a picture’s symbolic objects. There is always something for the observer to discover. I never force my vision or push my philosophical opinion on the viewers each and every one, can give theirs philosophy to my creation. My art is surreal reality, all in my head. The viewer take a journey to places just as real as those you might find in this reality. When I start working on a new scene, it's like enter to a fantasy dream. like starting your new only virtual world. “Everything is possible” and in the majority of my works I am trying to combine visual realities, with subconscious emotions and philosophical thoughts. TAL HAFNER The body is the base from which I step into the creative process. I use my own body as well as other bodies I create from my close environment in order to explore tensions in its' relationships with its' abilities, its' needs and the powers activated on it such as gravity, movement, breathing, feeding, fertility and much more. Within the dialogue created, I delicately spin threads of Israeli landmarks, such as local architecture styles and beach culture. Mesmerized by reality, I melt its' visual richness into a tactile expression. My environment has a critical role in igniting my creative manifestation. For these abilities, I am grateful, since they eliminate the noise in my world and leave me only with the inspiration.

ILAN SHACHAM Self-taught Photography artist, specializing in minimalistic and abstract views of the world around us. In my works I attempt to eliminate the minor distractions out of the visual-environmental wealth and expose the underlying building blocks of reality – The shapes, forms and colors surrounding us. This is my way of showing that all objects are created from the same basic elements. Whether its water, trees and mountains, or buildings and plowed fields, they all maintain an undeniable underlying connection, which is clearly revealed once the noise surrounding them is peeled off. My works are characterized by high precision geometric qualities, symmetry and a flare for aesthetics. They refine the complicated world into clear shapes, forms and patterns, resulting in a thought provoking celebration for the mind and eye. IlanShacham@gmail.com www.IlanShacham.com

SOFIE BERZON MACKIE I immigrated to Israel from London when I was 6. I buried my mother when I was 7. My photographic work delves into my personal biography, one defined by immigration and orphanhood. My work is a collection of thoughts and reflections on becoming a mother without a mother, about the concept of home, homesickness and memory. Working with photographs from my family album, I stitch together the scattered pieces of my past, and shape the building blocks of my identity. Photographing in my childhood neighborhood in London, I pivot around the garden of my family home, as a symbolic territory in my personal narrative. I use the photographs to assemble an archive, a memory museum. sofie.mackie@gmail.com Instagram: sofie.mackie
AVIVIT SEGAL When I photograph I aim for the meeting point between the concrete photograph and the abstract image. The white expanse created in consequence of overexposure is meaningful for me. In the quest for the “naked” picture I try to reach the outcome of timeless conciseness and clarity. Overexposure conceals details which are unnecessary to me, yet remain as a “ghost” in the final result. The white expanse is the midst between the physical world and the metaphysical world, which allows the presence of silence, the “pause” between the words, thus reinforcing the images themselves. The thin deployed line between the revealed and the not revealed. The photograph represents a reality without time or place. www.avivitsegal.com/about avivitsegal@gmail.com
MERAV DROR Little Italy, Montreal In this project, I was shooting in Little Italy, a neighbourhood in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Where I useds to live for half a year. Little Italy was originally the neighborhood of Italian families since its arrival in the 17th century. At the beginning of the twentieth century the Italian population began to crystallize into an organized Italian community. This days, little Italy is only a "pale shadow" in relation to what it used to be. Most of the rooted Italian families have grown up and moved to the suburbs, some of them remain connected to the neighborhood, if only by their personal identity. With my analog camera, 35 mm, B/W film, I was looking for the Italian sense, through Italian faces, businesses and other italyan traces that might shed a light on the neighborhood caricature In 2017. merav.dror1@gmail.com

HAGAI FARAGO The works of my Tel Aviv series create an elusive space. While depicting concrete buildings in actual locations throughout the city, all works form new, mystic and peculiar sites. The complex digital manipulation of the urban structures isolates them both of their immediate surroundings as well as the ordinary urban perception. The Tel Aviv works are portraits of the “organs” composing the city's architectural tissue - these are representations of objects “torn out” and lifted from their actual physical boundaries, thus creating alternative metropolitan scenes. haguyfarago@gmail.com www.instagram.com/mr.hagav The university gallerya

DORIT JORDAN DOTAN I am interested in how art affects communities and visa versa. I have created fine art photography and new-media to draw attention to larger social and community issues. This body of work is part of my ongoing project created in a wide variety of international locations. I’m creating it to highlight a moment in time where people have adjusted to their surroundings, and for the viewer to identify themselves with the “other” depicted in the piece. I have included images from my photography project in Israel, Berlin, Central Park and Harlem, NYC, and New Orleans. I draw attention to the sampling of images in the immediate area, which have then been reconfigured into geometric shapes. I have chosen here 10 images that reflect my perspective about places, people, neighborhoods and communities. www.doritjordan.com dorit.jordan@gmail.com

RAMI YERUSHALMI I got the first camera at the age of 13, and since then I have been filming. My art has deepened throughout the years and according to age - Helped me in sweetening bitter water, To erase a tear when it appeared, To calm my angers - when they came. I take pictures following my gut feelings. The works are being polished mostly by choosing the correct frames, with a very minor processing. Most of the works are the result of a research of my close environment, so I can easily go back and take the picture again, until getting the desired result. 218ramiy@gmail.com www.facebook.com/ramigallery

LIHI BINYAMIN I leaved in Leipzig for half a year. During that time, I wanted to get to know the city better, the less touristic parts. I decided to arrange myself a "game". Each day I took a different line of the tram. In each station of the line- I went off the tram and photographed people and places around the station, until the next tram came. Then I went up again. During that time, I photographed all the stations of all the lines. When I came back, I selected the photos that in my eyes, represents the city. Some of them photos I left as it is and from some, I made collages. In those collages I used materials from children's creative shops, tried to make a fleeing of a "game". Leipzig is a city in progress in a way. A lot of old people (now young families are starting to move there), a lot of abandoned houses, a lot of constrictions. It trying to develop itself and the roomer says it will become the "Next Berlin". In this project I try to reflect the atmosphere of this calm, relax and constantly changing city. lihibinymin@gmail.com

LUCY ELKIVITY There is something unconscious about the inception of new work. An image floats in an undefined world, is hunted and captured. After that comes the disengagement. I start feeling for its needs, as I paint its encompassing world. The inspiration might be the biomorphic world. I look for a system of tools that can examine any living being. The need to express motion has drawn me toward marionettes. Those are living creatures anchored in rich attributes and childhood memories. I came to investigate the fan after my excitement from movement. Robert Bresson says in his book "Notes on the cinematographer" that the sight of movement gives happiness. So, I gave them wings. Wings are fans. Fans are wings. I'm exploring the cyanotype technique as I feel that I can express through it my feelings about time passing and places. elkivity@gmail.com www.lucy-elkivity.com

MICHAL LUFT The casual, observing, photography is a daily instrument through which I experience my surrounding. As an ongoing visual diary, constructed upon the most basic fragmentary element of photography, it allows me to map out the reality, analyse its particles and reorder them as I please. From within my ‘collection’ I create photographic series, constructing an akin pattern based upon elements such as light and composition, contemplating the visual form of time and similarity of places. mimichaluft@gmail.com www.michal-luft.com

YONA LEVY GROSMAN I live on the edge of the Israeli desert, my work deals with several fields: oil paintings, drawing, video art, laminated reality, poetry and prose. The desert landscapes provide the vision and insights of infinity. These landscapes speak to me in rhythms, colors, and changing patterns that combine and repeat themselves in different places. In my work I move between them from macro to micro and back as from figurative to the abstract. Of all these, the landscapes of shifting sand that change the appearance of their surface in a miraculous snake's movement, mesmerize me. I return again and again to deal with the magic hidden within it. yonalg@gmail.com www.sand-dune.net

MYRIAM HACCOUN My photographic research documents the changing face of the cities: the wounded landscapes, the appropriation of the land by means of construction, destruction, and reconstruction. Cities struggle to define their landscapes: politically, economically, culturally and historically. They require a defining stability but are always in transition. Cities are a composition of homes, of routes, of paths and passages. They impose structure and form on space, generating rules of action for using it –They make room for everyone and thus also for no one. We are the consumers of cities, but cities also consume us, manipulate and control us. The series " sign of disaster" is an ecological wariness, an apocalyptic point of view. There is a seed of destruction in the city. www.myriamhaccoun.com myriamarianehaccoun@gmail.com
SHAUL BAZ The canvas for me is a surface where I can create a reflection of the world in which to research the human condition. observing and painting, together with the element of research are also ritual and a space of love, of getting closer and understanding. My subjects are almost always taken from the world that is close to me or close to my heart and the landscapes I paint are almost always influenced by human beings.

NOA ARBEL Painting is my true passion; the flow of the brushwork, the texture, the layers of paint, harmony in composition, and especially color, mixing and creating a large variety of hues and tones. Color is my natural language, where I can express my self at best. I am intrigued with painting’s creative process: Painting leads me each time to a new exploration of an inner truth. I work with intuition, being at the moment, learning courage of a constant change of the painting as part of the process, not knowing what’s next. The subject matter that has captured me over the last few years is landscapes and cityscapes, whether it is done in a traditional style, or more loose, when the landscapes become abstract inner landscapes.. I move back and forth between those two. www.noaarbel.com noaarbel10@gmail.com

ANDRE STASHINSKI Drawing and traveling have always been my favorite activities. Therefore, it is quite natural that wherever I go - for a walk in my neighborhood or on a long trip abroad - I always have a colors box with me. I prefer not to define myself as a landscape painter in a traditional sense. I start my work with an analysis of what I saw. I try to understand what exactly caught my attention, what I want to tell my viewers. I disassemble the landscape into the smallest components in my imagination. By this way I discover the personality of a place. The most difficult and fascinating task right now is to reassemble all of it on canvas. And not to forget to add personal impression of artist. astashinski@gmail.com FB

HAGIT KAZINITZ My work comes from a place that has no name. The paintings describe everyday urban landscapes that are surreal and apocalyptic. They range from the realistic to the abstract, landscapes painted on the axis between what is there and what is absent, what is hidden and what is visible – surging through the underground channels of our subconscious. The narrative that drives my works brings up questions about our borderline existence between reality and fiction. The works live on the seams between what is broken and woven anew, between vulnerability and strength. I aim to raise to the surface the power of that which is hidden. www.h-kazinitz.com h.kazinitz@gmail.com

TAL PORAT I have been drawing and painting for the last fifteen years. During my studies I was introduced to the vast tradition of painting, starting with the art of greece and Rome, all the way to today’s figurative painting. My self-expression as a painter, when arriving to a new place, lies in the choices I make. There is too much information in reality itself, much more than can be expressed, and what makes art interesting, in my eyes, is the information the artist chooses out of this chaos. In this sense, I am not a realistic painter. I am not streaming to include each detail in a landscape. On the contrary – I strive for simplification, based on the most important details, which will represent my personal experience of a certain place. I want to offer other people the chance to see the things through my eyes, and to explore a place through my subjectivity. The same landscape can be seen differently by different artists. What makes art personal is the choices an artist makes and instills in his art. www.talporat.myportfolio.com poratal@hotmail.com

DALIT GUREVICH My work represents a microcosm of collective memory, visually encapsulating the interplay of history, identity, and landscape. Born and raised on a kibbutz in the Israeli desert, bordering the Gaza strip. The circumstances of my childhood defined my life and are primary influences on my work. While I was growing up, the region was very peaceful; I spent most of my time barefoot outdoors, exploring my surroundings. Today the situation is very different: the conflict escalated, and the people living in the area experience terror and fear daily. Although I live in Brooklyn now, I still consider the kibbutz my home. In my work, I look closely at the landscape that stretches over the area. I incorporate unexpected materials such as rope, cement, straw, yarn, chicken wire, and metal rods to portray the relentless desert life forms that manage to survive in spite of the challenges and the harsh conditions. Much like the people who exhibit a deep-rooted resilience, determination, and a strong desire to live a peaceful life in their own home on the border. dalitgurevich@hotmail.com www.dalitgurevich.com

DAVID LOUIS As a child I was drawn to the art of painting. Yet in practice, I became a trumpet player, composer and conductor. Music became a part of me. Over time I gradually returned to my first love and I began to paint. Whenever I think about my musical compositions, I think what they would look like in painting. To me, the colors of the spectrum, the notes of the musical scale and the Kabalistic Spheres are all one. The challenge is to take supernal ideas and embody them in sensible color, to see how elemental natural pigments are transformed into a mirror of metaphysical thoughts. My whole life as a painter has been spent in improving the flow of the thought into the painting with the least possible presence of the brush paint and canvas. ZIVA CASPI The image – usually as a photo taken by me takes on a certain style and form, then transforms and morphs into a new visionary world. Watching the image is a kind of experience taking you through a colorful maze of the unknown. The painting process is a kind of infinite quest; it never ends - it is just the beginning of new one. As a direct continuation of my long term practice, my most recent paintings (2015/2016) have more of a minimalistic character; very calculated, accurate, illustrated angles, lines, buildings, interiors and exteriors, urban aspects, people I meet on my daily route, plain and common objects like laundry, etc. All of these elements get a new life and a character of their own in these paintings. Not ideal in the philosophical, or political sense, not as a scholastic construct or emotional exaggeration, but rather – it to its distilled quintessence, its atmosphere, its light, its culture and its sensuality. SHANI WEISS My works are made out of patches, alive within the stitches: a constant movement between chaos and harmony, figuratism and the abstract, real spheres and dreams. Healing these conflicts is a work of restoration, which holds the fragile margin and brings the pieces together I wander about and collect materials from different spaces: natural, urban and virtual. Lonely, broken pieces attract my attention and I weave them together to create a tale. This technique leaves singes and scars, evidence of my original observations, that keeps my works between sketches and paintings, as an ongoing exploration. In this series of works, real and imaginary figures hove in residential spaces. The twilight, mysterious atmosphere hides a struggle. This was made when roaming between familiar and unknown, remote regions. weisshani@gmail.com www.shaniweiss.com

VANESSA STASHINSKI There are watercolors and road sketches. All of them were drawn directly on location. I draw everywhere I go and always work from observation. In the wild, I appreciate its pristiness, "rawness". No drama, but natural balance of shapes, proportions, colors and lights. CIties attract me by their multilayering. I relish the architectural details, following stream of streets, exploring ponds, benches, bridges, pipes, gardens, faces - everything that makes the place special. vaniiivaniii@hotmail.com

HAVA GAL-ON My artwork can be read as stories created by color surfaces, laid down in layers of symbolical paint, representing a specific transformation of ideas. In recent years, I have taken more interest in and gained more insight into old testament and other mythological stories. Genesis - the story of the miracle of Creation did not end after seven days but, to my mind, it keeps recurring every day. I paint using various techniques, with bold brush strokes and paint gushing straight from the tube. I enjoy unveiling new meaning from readymade objects from my private surroundings as well as items from the Israeli cultural surroundings These take on a whole new meaning while dressed up with the new context of color and text. www.havagalon.com vera.pilpoul@gmail.com
