The issue of the magazine – NO WAR Everything is burning around us (Israel), and again there are winds of war. Memories of previous wars, pictures pass before our eyes, a shock. No one believes you can live that way, in that tension and to maintain routine life like nothing is happening. In this edition, contemporary artists deal with the situation and call out. We are tired of all wars, no war! The 44 DEGREES online art Magazine is founded by TAMMY MIKE LAUFER 2013 All rights reserved ©

• VERONICA ELLRAN The sculpture "Bereavement" consists of three iron balls which are the three heavy holes wide open in my heart, my soul and my mind, since the loss of Erik, my firstborn son, who was killed in an accident in 1978 and was only 4 years old. Although the holes are empty, they are heavy and deepen as time goes by. Along with Erik died a part of me and an endless physical pain was caused by the heavy hole that hurts my heart. My soul is continually busy in the struggle against oblivion, struggle that becomes a life experience.
For many years, Erik continued to grow along with his brother: his place at the table, next to me, was preserved. He went to school, got a mobilization order, and was an older brother to his younger brother. He dealt with us during my divorce from his father; together with me, he fell in love with my current husband and even gave his name to his younger sister. From among the sense of loss of strength and control, after many years, I have finally decided “to bury him”. I realized that the struggle overwhelmed me and the only thing I can do is embrace the pain as an essential part of my existence, go back and remember Erik as a small child, as he was when he died. Live with longing and especially stop asking "Why”? From among the sense of loss the holes took shape, got a physical presence: Three large, heavy and empty bodies were created. These are the three balls I carry with me, since then, all the time, without a break, even in sleep. Time does not bring relief, the weight of the holes does not change, but my strengths are declining. veronicael52@gmail.com http://www.veronicametalart.co.il/
About my art and works My artistic process begins by almost obsessively observing the magical world of the small bodies of nature. It is an attempt to isolate the primary elements and identify their order so as to understand how shape is composed. This complexity is the source of inspiration for my work. My works are often reminiscent of natural forms. My work process is similar to the process of creation in nature. The forms build slowly, step by step, until the complete development of shape, that is, until I get to the shape I want to perpetuate.

• DAN REISNER VICTORY 2012 The hand is, in fact, a casting of the artist’s own hand, presenting the well known image of V for victory. This particular image originated in the war between France and England. When the British got hold of French bowmen, they would cut off their first two fingers, so they could never use a bow again. When the French had secured a victory in one of the wars, they showed the English their intact fingers in a sign of defiance. One of the sources of inspiration for the heads showing their tongues is the famous photograph depicting a Vietnamese officer who, in a moment of masculinity, went outside and, knowing there had been journalisms about, shot a war prisoner in the head. Placing the two fingers defiantly against each other demonstrates the inner struggle that accompanies a sense of victory. The work is anti-war, with political aspects, trying to show that there are no victories in war, even if at times it seems there are. The piece as a while describes the irrationality of the infinite struggle, a sort of Catch 22. The victory, struggling within itself, sits on a cannon shell, a ticking time bomb. www.danreisner.com danreisner@gmail.com
• AVIVA BEIGEL I am an artist living in War zone. War has always been a part of my life. As a child and as an adult I have learned how to cope e with fears, pain and vulnerability in harsh reality. This series of photos was made during one of these difficult moments. The only way for me to relate to this situation was by a kind of documentation, that helped me to make a distance between me and the Events happened around me.

• RUTEA S. NOY Painting and illustrating prepared me for photography while film making exposed me to digital media. Therefore, I present my digital imagery as an extension of classical art. Enticed by phenomenology, existentialism and improvisation, my aim is to illuminate each portrait in a genuine, intimate light. Deep within, every portrait is unique, a micro cosmos, revealing an enduring tale. It captures a spark of the human spirit even without exposing an entire face or shrouding it completely. All images generates vitality through esthetic harmony, color, movement, symbolism. They are sheer manifestation of inner freedom, strength and joy. Some were executed randomly in a spontaneous fashion, some were styled and produced with a crew. Before a styled shoot I write a script and direct the crew like a film director. However, afterwards, I perceive my work as Fine Art. By utilizing a combination of actual painting and software I create the final touch.

• TAMMY MIKE LAUFER In memory of my uncle, who was killed in the Yom Kippur War in Sinai. My works are similar to mental puzzles, where you can travel from one point to another by analyzing a picture’s symbolic objects. there is always something for the observer to discover. I never force my vision or push my philosophical opinion on the viewers each and every one, can give theirs philosophy to my creation. My art is surreal reality, all in my head. The viewer take a journey to places just as real as those you might find in this reality. When I start working on a new scene, it's like enter to a fantasy dream. like starting your new only virtual world. “Everything is possible” and in the majority of my works I am trying to combine visual realities, with subconscious emotions and philosophical thoughts. I create my virtual world, with 3d software and 2d paint software. Using combinations of renderings, lightings, textures and shapes. www.Tammymikelaufer.com tamylauf@netvision.net.il

• ELDAD PNINI War is one of the oldest in the history of mankind and was conducted from early humans to organize themselves in groups. War is caused by elements such as religion, culture, limited resources, tradition, ceremony and ritual practices. War is underway with planning, strategy, resource management, science, command, courage, heroism, death and more. As much intensity and dramatic dimension dared war, it became the focus of major inspiration including art works and cultural history of mankind: documents, drawings, poems, literary novels, historical studies, plays, movies, music and more. Despite all this, the war causes great destruction. She has destroyed hundreds of millions of people and caused a great waste of resources, poverty, shortage (after Bizet), hunger (as part of a scorched earth tactic), epidemics (such as the Spanish flu) and environmental pollution. Ftzfistim opposed the war, while militarists regard war as a positive thing. Which side do you belong?

• AVITAL AHARONI The objective of this work is to demonstrate the idea of the mother's decay of body as a result of bereavement and loss of a child. It's even more painful since the sacrifice is in vain, un-necessary. War is not an unsolvable situation. I use my body as a field of expression through plaster casts of it. I use natural rock clay from my living area and by that I express the basic idea of coming from the earth and returning to it when time comes. The work expresses my frustration as a mother and a woman who can't change the course of life and politics and by that, happen to go through the biggest sorrow and pain of losing a child in war activities.

• AHIKAM SERI A series of images depicting moments in times of war in Israel. Witnessing endless tension over the past decade and a half, war, in its different forms, seems to continue despite countless expressions of hope for a different vibe in the area. Refrerring to the theme of ‘no war’, this series can be named ‘yes, war’. 001. A missile, fired by Palestinian militants in Gaza, lays on ground after being inspected and covered by Israeli bomb squad, where it had hit an open field, in Ashdod, Israel. 002. An Israeli soldier pray after taking part in an infantry drill, in Gush Katif, Gaza Strip. 003. An Israeli artillery battery, deployed in the Golan Heights, fires towards southern Lebanon, at the start of the Second Lebanon War. 004. • ZILA FRIEDMAN Burka, a veil. A traditional Muslim woman must conceal her physical beauty from men whom she is not related to. I addressed this subject intensively since 1997, according the situation of the Afghan women . I took a series of photographs that appeared in the 'Haaretz' newspaper, using a Xerox machine. I enlarged them on waxed paper, and then worked on them applying a method of drawing, with straight lines that create a lattice on the paper – reminiscent of the net-like material that Afghan women use to cover their face. I grew up in an Orthodox religious family in Bnei-Brak, with all the traditional habits, Jewish heritage and customs, including women conservative dressing, covering completely their hair, arms and legs. Using the image of the Muslim woman wearing a veil and hiding her beauty, reminded me similarity between the two worlds, and , in a way, reconciliation between those worlds. Maybe this will be one more step for peace and NO WOR.

Combat engineering troops get a fancy greeting from this little fellow after completing a treacherous trek for their well-earned gray berets. Digital Artist Photographer. Visual Graphic Design and History of Art graduate . On the way from the Analog world to the Digital world, I went from using direct contact of the materials such as: Celluloid, Steel, Wood, Glass and Canvas to the Digital world where I collect all the materials for my work using the camera and the scanner. The computer's mouse is my main tool to draw and scalp my work of art. • MOTTY GOLAN I was born in Israel 1955, studied under the baton of some of the finest artists in the seventies. I paint realistic-symbolistic images, oil paintings on large formats and presented my first exhibition in 1978. In 1982, following a hard personal experience in the Lebanon War, I redefined myself as a social artist and my works ever since describe human and environmental situations. As an Israeli, I follow the pounding heart of the Israeli society. My works deals with the myth of the hero, the post traumatic experience, and environmental-ecological issues. My works has been exhibited in many galleries in Israel and abroad as well as in the Israeli parliament Knesset and president's house. After many years in Tel-Aviv, I established the "Tel-Aviv/Ayelet– Hashachar art gallery" in Kibbutz Ayelet–Hashachar, at the UpperGalilee, where I continue to teach, to create and to promote social-art projects in the periphery of Israel. mordg@013.net.il www.mottygolan.com

• MIMI ZIV Lior is my middle child. He was killed at the age of 19 during Pesach in 2003. He was the first combat journalist to be killed during the intifada. He was the first IDF cameraman to fall in the line of duty. Lior Ziv was just 19 years old, my beloved son! Somehow 10 years have gone by since I have lost my son. I feel that this happened yesterday, yet I feel very old. The loss of my son, Lior, was a traumatic experience that changed my entire family, my husband, my kids, my mother, all of us have been affected. Shabbat, holidays, birthday parties, nothing will ever be the same. I always see Lior's empty chair. I see him in every thing I do, in every song I hear, in every meal I prepare. This has changed my days, my nights, my entire life. As an artist I paint intensively during those 10 years, I use acrylic and oil on canvas to show my feelings. I hate war! How can a mother sleep while she is waiting second by second for her child to return home to her? How can I comprehend that my missing child will never come back? How can a child, who you nurture and watch grow to the age of 19, suddenly disappear? I hate war! It has been impossible to continue living without the help and support of others. I have a very supportive family and lots of friends who have been there for me from day one, but only art can save me. My art is a reminder of my son, but as a reminder of all the Israeli mothers and fathers and families who have lost children to terror and war. http://mimiziv.wix.com/website mimiziv@gmail.com
• MICKY HAREL Is there a world without wars? Not that I know of… We all thrive and seek for piece and quiet lives, Meanwhile we need to deal with so much agony and pain. Berthold Brecht started writing when in an instant he dropped his pen and said: "Did you open the newspaper this morning? What can I say when every moment carries news more horrifying then the one before… In my works I deal with the conflict of the occupation along with great sensitivity to the Arab spring revolutions. The pain wraps the whole of the middle east including us. In my paintings I describe soldiers fighting demonstrators with smoke grenades while wild dogs and wolves are mingling among the hysterical mob disappearing in smoke. People fighting in an unidentified landscapes or a street war in a place that can represent Gaza, While threatening and at the same time also threatened shadowy figures of people and wolves running away from a blast. The wolves symbolize the absolute other and raise the question Who is the enemy here? When time to march comes, Many do not know That the real enemy is the one who marches at the head of the row. The voice who gives the orders Is the voice of the enemy He is the enemy himself. By Berthold Brecht mikusharel@gmail.com

• MONICA MOSCOVICH In 2005 I visited my South American homeland, re-discovered the extraordinary landscapes, the culture and colorful art crafts produced by the descendents of indigenous tribes. I was inspired by the beauty of the natives, their heritage and authenticity and the firm standing facing different wars- from the conquest to the actually war against the "modernization" threaten most with assimilation and rapid extinction. My indigenous portraits show simple figures, both rough and peaceful, with prominent inner strength, pride of their origin as it is my desire for revaluation of indigenous groups in their own cultural preservation. • INBAR DEKEL In my home country ISRAEL I’m constantly surrounded by acts of terrorism, war, violence, stress and aggressions both physically and mentally. There is no escape from it, but sometimes there has to be in order for me to stay (relatively) sane. So I draw and sketch what at times aches to come out in the form of empathy or strong emotion and at times the exact opposite to find some peace of mind. My drawings/illustrations are the result of an illustration project I took on myself which come to describe a poem about Love, emotions, inner war and peace. Drawings are on A5 paper and made with pencil, ink and pastel color. inbar1986@gmail.com http://inbar1986.wix.com/inbart
