ABOUT THE MAGAZINE
44 DEGREES is an online magazine dedicated to the promotion of contemporary and professional Israeli artists. The magazine showcases various artists such as digital media artists, painters, sculptors, and curators, with each issue focusing on a different theme. Artists showcased in the magazine may be contacted via the URL posted. The magazine may be viewed in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem information archive room and in Tel Aviv Museum Library. 44 DEGREES online art Magazine was founded in 2013 by the artist Tammy Mike Laufer. She created the concept and she's also the Designer | Editor |Art director |Curator |Producer | Website Director.
Tammy Mike Laufer lives and works in Israel. She is an international contemporary artist and art director. She is graduate from the extension of the "Technion" Israel Institute for Technology in the department of Graphic Design, and continuing education program for designers at Sivan College Tel Aviv. She has been engaged with Digital Media for over two decades. In this issue we are proud to introduce six of our winning artists who received the prize "artist of the month", granted to members of The Association of Women's Art and Gender Research in Israel. In the next issues we will introduce additional artists, aiming to unfold the rich variety of artists, techniques and themes that women artists in Israel are engaged in. This issue of 44 Degrees is in collaboration with The Association of Women's Art and Gender Research in Israel. The main goals of the association, established in 2015, are to encourage the research of women artists in Israel. We also aim to serve as facilitators to contemporary women artists who are in need – by organizing events, shows, prizes and residencies, alongside helping them with networking, and by supporting scholarship about artistic activity. The association welcomes researches, artists, curators and art lovers of all genders and ages, from any religion, ethnicity, or nationality. ORNA OREN-IZRAELI Oren-izraeli holds a M.Ed form Oranim College (2019). She is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator. She has developed a unique language through which she combines issues of memory, culture and gender in relation to autobiography. HAGIT SHAHAL Shahal is a graduate of the Arts Academy in Hague, Holland. She is a multidisciplinary artist, working with drawing, painting and prints. She teaches drawing and painting in her studio. Her work deals with personal biography through identity and class in the society. DALIA SEGEV Segev is a painter who graduated the Bezalel Academy of Art (B.FA, 1988). Her art deals with gender issues, and especially women and nature relationships and eco-feminism. Alongside creating art and teaching art in her studio, she is also a social activist, working with the shelter for women suffering from domestic violence. GONI HARLAP Harlap is an installation artist and sculpture, graduated from Haifa University (M.FA). Her work deals with gender and contemporary issues of women's art. Much of her works revolves around mythic legends, for example the series "Medusa" evolves in new materials through the artist's own face. RONI BEN ARI Ben Ari is an artist, curator and a social reality photographer. She exhibited in Israel and abroad and her works are also purchased by private collectors. AMIRA ZIAN Zian is a photographer, who earned her B.A. and M.A degree from the Haifa University. She lives and works in Yarka, a Druz village in the Gallil. Her works revolves around cultural identity, and especially women's lives in the Druze society. She has received the Spillman Prize in 2009 and the High Achievements Award from the Haifa University in 2010. ANAT BEN EZRA I was attracted to art as a child, a desire for creation coming from the heart, a sense of satisfaction. Sculpture. This is my life in the past decade. Various techniques and various materials, concrete castings, polyester. Now I focus on casting in bronze - bronze gives the sculpture eternal life. My works are in a modern classic style and a realistic approach; through sculpture I express my inner and emotional world. My sculptures tell a story about the world and the power of a woman ... her movements ... her expressions and feelings. The fusion with nature. My uniqueness is something that I draw from a profound depth. I always sculpt the same woman's face. Various plots about one woman. In every sculpture I leave something of my life, moments of magic, coping, warmth. Dance, passion, relationships, family and power. TAMAR ISTRIN I was born and raised in Tel Aviv Israel. The inspiration for my sculptures comes from my surroundings, family stories, the environment in my community. I sculpt in clay and then cast the statue in bronze. My sculptures have been displayed in solo and group exhibitions in Israel and abroad, while some have also been purchased by art lovers. World War II is one of the most difficult times for human history. This period left a strong impression on me. During this period human dignity was trampled to the ground. People were seized with fear and despair. Some of them managed to find hope for the day after the war, managed to keep the spark of hope. SHULA ROSS Im an Israeli artist. In my figurative sculptures and oil paintings, I deal with two major motives, the one being the issue of womanhood and the other, the views of Israel. I studied history of art at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and in the studio of known artists. HEDVA and RONI REUVEN We are a couple of artists creating together through a unique collaboration. Hedva in ceramics and I, Roni, in painting, are creating a continuous dialogue. In our creative process, Hedva designs in ceramics a body of reference representing organic human body parts or scenery segments that are generated and come back to the earth. I paint concealed and unexplained trajectory channels bonding the inner and outer worlds. In our collaborative work we create a tapestry of images in a world of hate and alienation, in a space of uncertainty looking for a safe space against evil scheming. The inspiration for the term “Metro” we borrowed from the terrorist tunnels that were discovered during “Tzuk Eitan” operation in the south. These tunnels were and still are a symbol of dangerous excavations, that hold within them fatal danger. roni147@barak.net.il

GILA MILLER LAPIDOT Sculpture and installation artist. Member of the "International Academy of Ceramics" organization and the "Israeli Ceramic Artists Association". Participates in biennales, exhibitions, residencies and symposiums in Israel and around the world. The works presented here where made as a reaction to the ongoing war with Gaza. Bombed buildings booth in Gaza and Israel are painful common pictures in the media. However, it is not just about this destruction. Our neighbors and we are permanently in post trauma as our basic human feelings are "bombed" and destroyed too. Will it ever be heeled?

JACOB BERENSTEIN As a sculptor I use different materials and a wide range of processes: Aluminum, bronze and others. I also make use of ready-made and found Objects Others, as well as iron, of course Found objects have great beauty and can be incorporated in almost any work of art in their entirety or processed to suit the needs of the work itself. They are easily available and usually only require the artistic imagination and artistic skill. The works on display here partially incorporate the above. Artists were already daring to take this path back in 1900, making it possibly For us to continue with new materials and new techniques that were not available to them. I find that this form of expression, unlike classic sculpture, allows things to be presented in a contemporary and different way – this is why I wander between methods and materials ,between casting, assemblage and position.

TAMMY MIKE LAUFER I am an international contemporary digital artist and art director, engaged in digital media and exhibits projects of video art and digital paintings in galleries and museums around the world. My works are similar to mental puzzles, where you can travel from one point to another by analyzing a picture’s symbolic objects. There is always something for the observer to discover. I never force my vision or push my philosophical opinion on the viewers each and every one, can give theirs philosophy to my creation. My art is surreal reality, all in my head. ELAD DAVID My work comes mainly from a personal point of view, related to events in my life, as well as memories and stages of my past. The "Snapshot" series offers a glimpse to moments of my life. UDI SALMANOVICH Fake Views 2019 In the era of fake news, war take place all over the media, reality has become a commodity to be bought, used, abused, manipulated and distorted by powerful politicians, corporations and money moguls to gain more power and money. By manipulating digital images, my art is intended to force the observer to confront their innate beliefs in observed reality, making judgment about what is real and what is fake, what is the truth. I was born in Tel Aviv 62 years ago. I became a fashion photographer at young age. Since turning 40, I devoted all my life for Art. TOVA ELDAD In my work there is a constant and dynamic dialogue between the wild and the human natures, between the inner and the outer natures, represented by images from the natural world: Flowers, trees, birds, fish, hyenas and more. The works search for a type of delicate and vulnerable balance between the different shapes and images, and space: the white of the canvas or paper. This is sometimes harmonious, other times it is menacing, fragile, or assaulting. The pieces are looking for the balance point of order and chaos. Human nature is also represented by wildlife, expressing the world of inner experiences, relating to time and place. HANA JAEGER My painterly world calls for pondering the voyeuristic experience of painting. I'm occupied with the marginal and trivial aspects of life such as may not be worthy of a second glance but are important enough for me to magnify and bring to the forefront of the painting. In my work I offer the viewer a look at the human landscape of the capitalist system, not as an outside observer making a one-dimensional criticism but rather as a peeping intimate participant All the figures I contemplate are enveloped in a prosaically low aura of antiheroism; they are connected to a concrete space, are constrained within a personal limbo and lack facial details, but nevertheless exhibit a defining body language. I believe that such is the power of painting – to look into the heart of being in order to echo its perversions.

DARIA KONSHTIK I express myself through painting, drawing, performance, installation and photography – examining topics such as identity, gender, feminism, analytical psychology, childhood and racism. The imagery that I endeavor to strictly and accurately express and explore is always fully formed in my mind’s eye from the outset. The imagery’s breakdown to its constituent parts exposes to me its formation, and its reconstruction enables me to emphasize its playfulness. As someone born in Ukraine (USSR) and raised in Israel, I deal with questions regarding the influence and convergence of Russian and Ukrainian cultures in the realm of Israeli discourse. I examine my identity as a Russian woman in Israel by way of a traditional Russian doll Matryoshka, serving as my alter ego. In my works, I am given to make use of a rich palette of colors; which allows me to disseminate the grains of naïveté and infantility of my internal world into the realm of imagery. MICHAL SHELLY When I paint, I try not to plan ahead . . . the feeling is that the paint in my paint board ‘chooses’ me . . . my free hand motions . . . the brain focused on the sensations that the topic/theme awakens . . . sometimes the ‘topic’ remains unknown to me, the paint spots, their texture, the color, the composition or the image that emerges, clarify to me what wants to be expressed . . . this is a conscious process that is in dialogue with unconsciousness. MICKY HAREL Sweet hours' cruel wars in Gaza Demolition and horror in Syria Being an artist in a land (and region) of everlasting wars I dill with my feelings and opinions expressing them by painting and writing poems. In "sweet hours" I express Ironically and critically the absurdity of wars. About the inferno that disappear as if it were not the day they ended. The absurdity of the repressing until the next round. Especially the acceptance of the situation as a decree of fate. I could not stand still by the outraging cruelty of the genocide in Syria. As an artist I needed to express empathy and compassion for the people. with thick pallet knife strokes and no colors.

ROSE BAR-NUR As an infant, I was spellbound by the unique sound of a pencil on paper. When I was four years old, inspired by the pictures of fairy tales on the preschool walls, I decided that when I grew up, I would draw all the fairy tales. So began my love story with the world of painting, with countless pencil sketches. I grew older, the topics changed, but my passion for drawing never diminished. At the age of fourteen I picked up a brush and have never laid it down. Today I work in oils, in a realistic style. My topics are taken from life with hints of symbolism. In my paintings I observe the complexity of gender, old age, poverty, existence and death. The dynamics between Jews and Arabs can also be found among my subjects. My paintings freeze real-life situations that conceal doubts. For the last two years I have been painting fulltime. YOSI LUBALSKY I am Israeli landscape painter graduated from the School of Architecture at Tel Aviv University with a B.arch degree. Exhibits from the year 2015 at exhibitions in Israel and abroad, including the Hudson Gallery in New York, the Palme Mall in London, the Okashi Art Museum in Acre, the Israeli Art Market magazine, and other exhibitions in Israel. My paintings deal with the landscape of the Land of Israel in the Jezreel Valley and the North. My art is defined as "patriotic art" And in my paintings I am dealing with the subject of Israeli society and the march towards global progress A farmer with the values of Zionist settlement.Dealing with a reality of change and paradox that shakes and undermines the familiar pattern and square, the work of the land against the entrepreneurial world and the momentum of construction that threaten the reserves of agricultural land. In my works I use precise images of field landscapes and create the "spirit of Israel of the past". My color and technique assumptions create a nostalgic "story" that connects to each of us. When I try to summarize my life from the heights of my age, I can say that my life were a constant and daily struggle: -As a child of immigrants family with a distinctly patriarchal orientation (the culture from which my parents came), in which a woman - and- surely a girl- child has no "say": "you'll be a good woman, work in a bank, bring children ... " So my war is tied up to get out of this world of expectations. And when my rebellion came, it was tremendous- uncompromising. Father's authority was absolute and I was the first to follow the more obedient sisters and there is no chance that I will continue in this tradition. I would have to pave my own way for myself. -As a woman and a mother to raise a family in a normal and optimistic atmosphere despite the terrible rupture of the burial of my eldest son as a four-years-old child -As an autodidactic-dyslexic artist, to build a unique artistic language of my own, to find my place in the artist community, and receiving recognition for the quality of my work. www.yehuditenglard.com yenglard@outlook.com

My work has a personal, complex, direct and intuitive sequence of techniques, photographic pieces (collage), pencil drawing, oil pastell, soft pastels, acrylic and other materials. Like "delving" into the light of my soul where bits of life, images and understandings are mixed. The small sites, the sensual shapes, sometimes also in sexual forms ... TAMI ALKON LORBERBOIM Born in Rehovot, 1967. An experienced artist with current and past exhibitions both domestic and international. Working in many versatile forms, including painting in oil and mixed techniques, engraving, print, and collage. In my art, I aim to depict the tension inherent to the clashing of various interpretations of reality: from the physical world to the world of dreams, to the fields of abstract color and space, as means of concealment of, and exposure to the existence of multiple realities. Since 2002, due to the emergent upheaval following Yitzhak Rabin's death, both emotional, deeply personal, and on a much grander social scale, my work began to acquire a sociopolitical nature. It has become a tool with which to examine to the question of a people's right to their land. A question immeasurably more complex due to the unique state of twin ownership by twin peoples, holding on tightly to their lands, in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. PNINA AFIK One of the main questions I ask myself is what do I want to express through my work, what message do I want to deliver to the viewer and most important how. How will the canvas or the wood panel look as the frustrating and even entangled process ends? In some of my paintings I search for options of placing the figure within the limits of the restricting canvas. The figure is sometimes static, sometimes in motion as if strolling within the environment I have created for it. TALLY MELAMED and MICHAL IRONI Photography & Visual communication first degree’s Senior year students, at Hadassah Collage, Jerusalem. “White Flag” is a documentary project, that represents the Israeli narrative, related to militarism and cultured every-day situations. These situations are drawn from our personal life, but also are common generally in the Israeli life. the images are represented as GIF and meant to be Repeat indefinitely, as a metaphor to life itself. The characters are painted in white, as a plane paper. They don’t have a definite identity and they can be anyone of us. MERAV DROR Between 2005-2007 I served in the IDF in a gender mixed combat unit guarding the border between Israel and Egypt. Serving in the army, particularly in a combat unit, raised questions of morality and meaning to my consciousness. I created this etching 10 years after I was discharged. In this etching I depicted one of the guarding towers, called 'Ataf 11', where I spent long hours during my service, Spending many hours secluded in front of a unchanging view I was confronted with these complex thoughts. 10 year after, with a new perspective, I went back to look at the person I was in that tower and examine how that experience impacted my life. merav.dror1@gmail.com
