Link

Piacenza, Italy

The project is exploring the link between private and public space as well as the relation between the city and nature. The project area is located in the suburbs of the town of Piacenza. It is on the border between the town and the countryside, part of a research campus, divided into narrow and long plots. The concept is based on the idea of a “bridge”. An architecture built on a border, combining characteristics of the town and the countryside. A connection as a passage between the two environments is generated. Spectacular sights bring to the fore the beauty of nature and the city. The problem of the narrow space is solved through a symbiosis in the form of open public spaces placed side by side to the private ones.

Piacenza is an ancient town that has grown and developed in time. One can see the history of development of the town just looking at its streets and the diffrent grids of each period layered one over another. Each period follows its own logic. On the other side the countryside also has its logic of development characterised by rural roads and irrigation systems. I overlayed the different grids found in the city and the countryside creating a frame which guided me during the development of this project. In order to create dinamic spaces the ortogonal lines were avoided and sharp angles and inclined lines were used creating a sense of movement and flow in the building. Such approach, even though restrictive, contributed for the harmony between public and private space in the building.

MUSEUM OF THE MIGRATION Tarifa, Spain

The Museum of the Migration is a project of compassion, awareness and empathy. It is exploring the atmosphere of a building, influenced by its context, function, form and materials as well as the primordial power of architecture to manifest ideas. The museum is seen not only as an institution that conserves artifacts and objects of artistic or scientific importance but as an arena of public engagement. The European Migrant Crisis is one of the major issues of our society and the Museum of Migration is perceived as a tool to raise the awareness of our society and provoke understanding and compassion. The museum would be a place where art and architecture meet the problem of migration and public debate is born. Because of its unique history Tarifa is chosen as a site of the project. It is a place where people with different religions, languages and various traditions, have mixed their cultures for centuries and have formed its unique character. The proposed building aims to provoke engagement through experiential design. Through alternation of diverse materials, dimensions and level of illumination perceptions and emotions are intensified in order to engage people’s attention.

Up and Down District Milan, Italy

The project gives answers to the present problems in ‘‘Citta Studi’’ district in Milan and resolves the existing disconnections. It takes into consideration the connection of the area, the city center and the periphery, given that every day thousands of people come to work and study in ‘’Città Studi’’. It was conceived through different interventions including new cycle paths, subways, new green spaces, reorganisation of the public and private transport. In addition, a whole building block was redesigned. As a result, the people who live in the area are provided with excellent mobility and additional public and commercial spaces.

Creation of a new underpass that allows the corresponding street to become one of the main arteries of connection between the center, “Città studi” and the suburbs. New connections between Città Studi and Lambrate on the occasion of a redevelopment of the former railway station. North-south axes requalification, which connects the future underground station with the university campus. Extention of the carriageway in order to move as much of the traffic outside of the university area as possible. Future underground stations Ground floors with prevalence of commercial functions with the aim of revitalising the corresponding streets Existing and new enrtances which increase the permeability of the blocks Areas which are predominantly pedestrian allowing access to authorized vehicles only New bus route New route of the cycle path New tree-lined avenues

The core of the project is the central area. In this large strip, where volumes and empty spaces alternate, the large open spaces that characterise the residential part of the project develop in green roofs. In this central area, extreme importance is given to the underground floor where underground paths lead to the two piazzas visible from the ground floor through large openings. The underground piazzas are an essential part of the project, being surrounded by different functions - a museum, a library, an administrative building, a restaurant and commercial spaces.

The entire building block host variety of functions with the aim to crate a 24/7 vibrant place in the neighbourhood. Functions that are missing in Citta Studi are proposed. Such functions would engage students in cultural activities as well as provoke public engagement. Student accomodations and Social housing functions are also introduced in order to attract students in the heighbourhood not only in the standard 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Better connection of the building block is also planned. The proposed cycle paths from the metro stations and the surrounding university buildings lead directly to the new building block. New subways would connect the block with the nearby Lambrate neighbourhood which hosts a student accomodations as well as the Lambrate design district. The basic objective of the project is achieved the neighbourhood is better connected, inside as well as with the city center and the periferia, and necessary functions are provided. Another fundamental objective of the project was to provoke the development of other plannet urban reformation that are postponed for years.

Shelter Ozolini, Latvia

The aim of the project is to create a relationship between the building and the nature in which each side provides goods for the other. The concept was developed based on the research of the way in which nature functions and it is inspired by its perfect balance and complexity. Natural logic is used in this human construction where the reasoning is based on simplicity and clearness. Starting from a simple form - a cube, symbol of the human shelter, through a process of comparative analysis with a tree, an example of natural shelter, the project combines characteristics of both cases. The simple and light design of the building allows easily to assemble and reassemble the building in different places. In additiion it can also be recycled.

The building is an example of a symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature. But even though the design is respectful to nature it is easily distinguishable. The cubic shapes, the black colour of the carbonised wood and the warm light coming out of the last floor during night contribute to the monumental spirit of the building. It is a self-sufficient structure that uses carbonised wood as a material of construction. The tree species in the zone of the project are perfect for the production of such material. Wood is also used as a source of energy. The carbon dioxide produced during the burning of wood is quickly absorbed in a natural environment by the plants. The reasonable use of wood would not cause deforestation as it is a renewable source.

It is a building that is developed in height and divided in 3 levels with different functional program on each floor. On the ground floor the sanitary facilities and the storage are located. Its smaller surface reduces the physical footprint of the building. The first floor is the living space of the building. Its position ensures greater acces to light in the context of a forest and not having direct impact with the ground better thermal and hydro insulation is achieved. Furthermore its uplifted setting creates a secure atmosphere. The last floor is a place for meditation. Its higher position combined with the choice of materials contributes to its intimate character. 42|

Alveolar polycarbonate sheets: Lightness in the structure and ease of assembly; Great resistance to impacts and to climatic conditions; Ability to thermally insulate the space keeping constant temperature. Spruce wood frame system Flexibility, reduced thickness of the walls and lightness; Performance in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation; Low cost and assembly speed. Internal lining in natural fir wood: Creates natural and cosy atmosphere inside the building. Clear covering that allows a good diffusion of light. External facing in charred spruce wood The carbonization process alters the surface of the boards and considerably increases their durability characteristics without modifying the inernal structure. By adopting this technique the maintenance costs are reduced.

Botique ‘‘Yamal al Sham’’ Dubai, United Arab Emirates

During my internship at De Ponte Sudio I was involved in the conceptual design of a sweets boutique shop in Dubai. I was responsible for the editing of the plans, sections and elevations in Photoshop and AutoCad. Furthermore, I did the editing of the technical drawings of the furniture and also prepared some technical drawings by myself, with the supervision of Silvio De Ponte. I, together with one of my colleges , was responsible for the creation of the layout for the final proposal of the project.
