LOST ICONS,
CURATORS CARLOS MATUCK AND CLAUDIO ROCHA
a retrospective exhibit and recent works by Julio Barreto, an artist who took part in the Graffiti Movement in São Paulo in the 80’s together with Alex Vallauri. He explored issues from pop culture, like characters from movies and comic books, such as the famous Spirit, a Will Eisner character. This exhibit, in addition to paintings on canvas, shows works made with stencil over wood panels and canvas, along with original masks and photographic reproductions of graffiti performed on the streets of São Paulo.
JULIO BARRETO
As an art technique, stencils exist since prehistoric times. In antiquity, they were applied to walls and objects as a decorative motif. They reappeared, renovated in the early 20th century, in the work of modernist painters, and legitimized by pop artists in the 60’s. They achieved the status of an urban, cultural and artistic movement in the late 1980’s, first in Paris, then New York, and eventually spread throughout the world. The form of expression known as graffiti was popularized in Brazil by Alex Vallauri in the late 70’s, together with Julio Barreto, at the time, a still curious and skilled young boy. He grew up breathing the atmosphere of the street art of his times, and its technically well-designed masks, portraying the universe of comics and mass culture.
In the natural transition from the streets to the studio, the artist combined the visual density and texture of urban space with the exaggeration, deviations and daydreams of society. The icons and characters identified by his sensitive and restless gaze, in absurd or mundane plots, are always present in his work.
