PROLOGUE Architecture can be a respond to the building context and the history, and in some circumstance it also can be a strong impact to the existing culture. According to my undergraduate study, Courses around regional architecture, sustainable architecture, culture system and structural design makes me thinking more about practical things. Discussing about the relationship between architecture and the environment and how to satisfy the demand that comes from many aspects, how to solve the existing contradictions and problems. Architecture has been considered more like a kind of strategy or answer to the surrounding environment. For me after my five-year study in Wuhan witnessed the great change of developing city, I think architecture should be a process of giving out questions, sometimes even creating chaos that will push us forward to think about what architecture can do. As a interdisciplinary field of study, architecture has been long aligned with emerging technologies, it requires innovation and also art thinking. For me architectural design is more like an endless conversation between architecture and different disciplines, which encourage to keep developing different possibilities, at each different stage of the whole process, we can find out different things, what I have done to the city context , helps me think about what I can do more. I think this is also the way that how architecture helps us to understand the space through time.

Innovative Affordable Housing FALL 2017 Vertical Studio Instructor: Eric Owen Moss Team: Ruoya Li, Mengyu Yu
Innovative modular community looking to redefine the suburban home on a new roll-up base surface. The project studies the relationship between block and surfaces. The studio project is to design an co-living housing community in Venice, California. The project performs an essential social service, and it represents to the local community the capacity of its design to transcend the long held conventional perception that, in this typological context, social service is prioritized over design content. The development was intended to integrate the advantages of suburban homes—in particular gardens, outside air, privacy into a multilevelled building with the density of a modern urban apartment community. Here we are proposing a possibility for new iconic modular community, and seeking and opportunity to roll up the flat, ground based housing system to create a compiling urban co-living space that is supported by primary adaptable grid structure and muti-size modular units. The compiling system of rolled up surface and blocks has the potential to integrate and create intersections between public space and private space under the pressure of city expension and huge demand of public spaces.

The main concept is to roll up a city site wrapped with blocks which represent the relationship between public space and private units. With various combinations, these units create 140 residences of varying sizes and configurations, each formed from one to three linked blocks joined to create larger units. Each unit is connected to at least one private terrace.

From the aesthetic point of view, the relationship between wrapped surface and blocks contains 3 segments—separate, semiintegration, separate. The blocks looks like insert into surface however to deal with the gradually changed intersection space is a big problem. By dividing building vertically with every 24’, we utilize a fragmented way to put units in and figure out the circulation in each segments.

SCI-ARC LENS
Design Studio 2017 Spring Studio ( 2GBX ): The shape of knowledge Instructor: Elena Manferdini Team: Paul Zhang, Mengyuu Yu This studio focus on the ambiguous potentials of material finishes and their applications in the design of façades and interiors. Cunning optical effects will be at the center of the studio exploration, because of their ability to instigate multiple readings. The politics of materials will be a device to engage with the difficult task of producing something unique out of something whose appearance by definition should be universal: the image of knowledge. The approach to materials will be cosmetic, cunning, relativistic and experiential. A key feature of SCI-Arc as an architecture school is its location in a city - it is at the heart of art district within LA downtown. The existing problems and latent potentials are obvious. For the art district, there has been a lack of “Art” identication and vivacity in city experience. In terms of the school, a strong sense of entry space for visitors and outdoor activity space for students are missing from SCI-Arc. So, our general idea is to establish a reciprocal interrelationship between art district and SCI-Arc. On one hand, SCI-Arc will Specically, we lift the building mass to create the semi-open public gallery space with a strong sense of entry space where original SCI-Arc facade will be a set of backdrop. On one hand, SCI-Arc will liberate ground of new site as gallery space for the art district to activate the area. On the other hand, the activation of art space, in turn, attracts participants as young architects and designers and brings them communicating and working together at SCI-Arc. SCI-Arc is then not only a school for architecture education but also a social, experimenting and working platform for students, architects, artists and other forces in the very near future.

space between two-phase buildings enables students to enjoy the skyline of downtown area. Phase 1 is mainly for edge students and senior students or other primary programs while phase 2 is mainly rental space for young architects and designers. The connection between buildings can be divided into two parts: one is the connection of workshop, where designers from the outside can share the fabrication shop and working space in the school; the other is the social and media interconnection where students, professors, designers and scientists can communicate and exchange ideas. In short, a school, especially an architectural school, in a city can be strength and a need for architectural education where the connection between profession and discipline is really inseparable.

IMPLANTATION
Thesis Project 2018 Graduate Thesis: Implantation - Between Landform and Building Form Instructor: Eric Owen Moss Indivitual Work Yu The project is seeking an opportunity to bring the city up to the hill to study different relationship between the building space and landscape, such when buildings go underground, blur into the natural landform, lift above the hill, or carve into the ground. Changing the landform through either surface manipulation or the creation of artificial terrains, and set up a new compiling urban environment that can stretch the flat city system vertically into different depth to create recognizable space amount repetitive blocks. The mixture of landscape and giant building space also have the possibility to solve the contradiction of city expansion and the demand of public spaces. Here blocks and pathway become overlapping system to affect the nature form of the landscape, create multiple readings of routes intersecting with the ground, getting back the sense of scale of the mountain. The discussion here comes to whether we realize that we are walking on the ground or the roof of the building. From people’s perception it is totally different when they are inside the building or outside. For building underneath we won’t even know it’s there.all these architectural actions indicate what we have done to the landscape. What we have change and what we maintained, more like a surgery to the mountain, landscape become part of the building.

The building context in Culver City is more like the system of grid and blocks base on flat ground. Clear boundary can be found between city and natural landscape. It is rare to see an “oasis suddenly appears and draw all attention.Using extended path way to cut in to the landscape and create space outside in and also inside out, the multiple reading of paths come from different directions has the possibility to implant different space condition according to the relation to the landscape. Different directions and depth of paths helps us to read the shape of the new landform and expose part of the building to see the relationship of building and ground. The purpose here is to create and exaggerate the conflict between buildings and the landscape and propose different possibilities of building context in Culver city.

The Baldwin Hill, Occupies the highest point and best view in Culver City, and cannot be ignored by surroundings. Taking north side of the mountain as the site and divide it in to different zones from north to south. According to different conditions on the site, the program of the project includes commercial space, office building, lan scape-park, and gallery space. Also possess different view facing Culver City, downtown LA, the ocean and also connecting the south part of the mountain.

The whole project is like a mega-structure that has been implanted into the mountain, representing “man made natureusing architecture as tool to manipulate landform in a huge scale, and the same time the mountain is also affecting the building form. The soil excavated from the mountain becomes a new part of the landscape reshaping the appearance of the original mountain from the out side.

Type:Movie Theater Location:Wuhan,China Date:September,2012-January,2013 Tutor:Zhu Sun Individual Work Compared to early years, media and entertainment industries in China have become more prosporous. In order to satisfy the public's demand, many places lost their original features when being transformed to commercial places such as movie theaters. To preserve the landscape of this site, we break the cluster of traditional movie theaters into small units and reorganize them into new forms according to their functions. Besides, by creating open spaces, we manage to promote transparency of the cluster.

FALL 2017 AS Design Doc GR Herwig Baumgartner, Brian Zamora Structures: Mathew Melnyk MEP/Sustainability: Jamey Lyzun Teaching Assistant: Abagael Warnars Team: Mengyu Yu, Zheng Xu, Hongxuan Zeng, Song Qiu, Yuhui Li
This course investigates issues related to the implementation of design: technology, the use of materials, systems integration, and the archetypal analytical strategies of force, order and character. The course includes a review of basic and advanced construction methods, analysis of building codes, the design of structural and mechanical systems, Environmental systems, Buildings service systems, the development of building materials and the integration of building components and systems. The intent of this course is to develop a cohesive understanding of how architects communicate complex building systems for the built environment and to demonstrate the ability to document a comprehensive architectural project and Stewardship of the Environment.
37 BUILDING ENVELOPE SYSTEM &MATERIAL SELECTION The Low-E coating glass can provide a clear view with ordinary glass, but with a higher UV protection. It can block the harmful UV light and keep the internal building temperature. The steel panels can be used solely for appearance, its physical proformance is better than aluminium panels. Also thermal expansion is lower than aluminium, which means it can seal the building better.facade. This system provides a better seal from the water and the thermal insulation as well.
The roof of the phase 1 is constructed in stick glazing system. It is adaptive to its complex shape, Because it has various types of panel size, workers can assemble the facade according to shape. The facade of the tower is the unitised glazing system. Because the shape of the panels is same, so that we use unitised system that panels will be assembled in factory. The speed of the construction will increase a lot. Beside the transparent part on the facade, the building also includes solid surface. We use metal rainscreen system for this part of facade. This system provides a better seal from the water and the thermal insulation as well.
38 STRUCTURE DIAGRAM
VIERENDEEL TRUSS AND STEEL FRAMING VIERENDEEL TRUSS: The Vierendeel truss has the members that are not triangulated but form rectangular openings, and is a frame with xed joints that are capable of transferring and resisting bending moments. The utility of this type of structure in buildings is that a large amount of the exterior envelope remains unobstructed and can be used for windows and door openings. This is preferable to a bracedframe system, which would leave some areas obstructed by the diagonal braces. STEEL FRAME SYSTEM: Vertical steel columns and horizontal I-beams, constructed in a rectangular grid to support the oors, roof and walls of a building which are all attached to the frame.
CONCRETE CORE: The main vertical structure of the building is the concrete cores the support the whole building. It serves as the stair core and the elevator core that support the vertical transportation. Some areas that there is no need to set vertical transportation uses the concrete share wall instead. MEGA TRUSS: The whole structure of phase 1 is a big truss with diagonal bracing inside. It allows that the whole building with bigger span of cantilevered space. FLAT PLATE: The at plate system provides a thinner structural layer for the apartment building. While the height limit is specic, at plate system can create a higher clarenca of each floor.
