NUVINCI IN THE WILD by Rich Yu If I were a bolder person, I would have departed for my bike ride from Chengdu to Tibet on a brakeless fixed gear. I was informed that though the elevation gains could be quite extreme on National Highway 318, which stretches from Shanghai to Lhasa, the roads were in excellent condition. After all, I had even heard stories of locals completing the trip on Chinese Fenghua hulks. Yet through some combination of fear and better judgment, I hurriedly assembled two geared bikes from fixie frames for my girlfriend and I. Luckily, a friend was kind enough to sell me a coveted Nuvinchi hub far below the recommended $400USD price tag. It is worth noting that this friend was not selling stolen goods, and as far as I can tell, lives a civilized, law-abiding life. To clarify, this hub is an internal gear hub, which allows users to change gears using “gears� built into the hub. Our travel mate Karl Ke, was equally enthusiastic about his own Nuvinchi, so we packed our panniers quickly and set off.
