MODEL YESA18RYE2A0R1S1OF AGE RADON TURN
What do you expect from someone who has just come of age: By definition, a person who has come of age has attained maturity and mentally grown-up. On its 18th birthday, Radon has not only grown up in that but in every aspect: fastest bike on earth, best all-mountain, 150,000 oversized magazines, a number of 135 different models, more than 100 service partners… These are facts that show the development of 18 years and where it has taken Radon.
Radon is trendy, Radon is stylisch, Radon is hip. In 2011, our products are once more raising the bar – so be prepared. Curtains up! 3
Why buy a Radon? There are plenty other fish in the sea! Hello? We are not the only ones on the market. The market impresses with hundreds of great, trendy brands that offer an unbelievable variety of models on the European markets every year. Over the last years we have turned into one of the most remarkable manufacturers. By the means of newest technological concepts and production methods we have been constructing bikes for years, which have shone through hundreds of tests in national bike magazines. We have managed to establish the image of an appealing brand name over the last years. Over the last two years we intensively worked on our design and we think that we have designed timelessly beautiful, technically high-grade bikes without too much ado.
These points describe our brand, but are not the determining buying factor. The main reason is to be found in the continuous controversies around our brand: what distinguishes us? It is a never ending discussion. Local dealer versus mail order company. Why is the mail order company so bad? It is simple: because he has bad prices! And where do these bad prices come from?
The classic distribution channel is the following: Manufacturer –> exporter –> importer –> wholesaler –> distributor –> retail –> customer (You!) In between there are numerous transport routes and inventory costs, customs duties, taxes (consider for example the non-deductible US or Taiwanese value added taxes) currency fluctuations and currency conversion losses, advertisement, distribution costs (field service). In direct sales, many of these stages are not needed: manufacturer –> customer. The money saved does not trickle away in intermediate trade margins, transport costs or expensive advertisements. It goes directly to the product. We have other advantages next to the slimmer distribution channels: Large volumes and, therefore, lower purchase prices, production to meet the demand and, thereby, more easily controlled costs, high competence, due to the fact that we are the manufacturer and can interfere with the production process directly and control it – as a result you only pay for the pure product and not the various intermediate margins.

BIKE-TREN
As every year, at the end of August, the biking sector will come together during EUROBIKE held in Friedrichshafen, Germany, on peaceful Lake Constance to present its innovations for the next year to the public. Since bike editors and the industry’s product managers or developers have already been introduced to the new products in advance, we want to let you get an idea of the trends in 2011 as well and share our opinion:
3x9 turns into 2x10?!?
6
The component giants have already introduced their innovations for 2011 a few months ago. Shimano will be offering 10-speed cassette sprockets as standard starting with the SLX and (for now) remain faithful to the third chainwheel, except for the XTR series. In contrast, with its X.7, U.S. competitor SRAM, who has long ceased to be a newcomer, is offering a 2-speed crankset for the lower middle class – the top tier-group
X.X even on an exclusive basis as in 2010. While Ritchey had already tried to market a 2-speed crank in previous years, the opportunities to finally establish the systems on the market seem to be favourable in the current year. The system requires less shifting and runs without annoying grinding or rattling. However, in extensive tests, we found that it does take a pair of strong legs to survive a tough day on the trail with the 2-speed. While the racer might find that the advantages outweigh, the 3-speed front is clearly the better choice for XC touring or alpine cross.
28“ rim x 2“ wheels = 29” The 29” wheels - i.e. a MTB with broad wheels on a 700C wheelset - cannot even count as a trend anymore seeing the force with which the industry and trade editorials are pushing onto the market. On the one side, there are slight advantages when it comes to rolling behaviour and biking control due to improved
gyroscopic forces, which comes at the expense of a higher weight and of the wheelset, as a result of the design, also of the frame and forks. From a subjective point of view, the riders with less than 1.90m height may find the design to be somewhat unusual. In our opinion, the 29” will definitely find a market besides the normal cross bikes. But the large wheels essentially make only sense for hardtail touring bikes. In view of the slower acceleration and more difficult handling on singletrail, the higher weight simply has too many disadvantages.
tion offered by small custom component makers that are meanwhile thriving again, the industry’s top dogs are also beginning to reach out for more. Things are now spiced up also for the RADON team. In 2011, the list of specs for a complete groupset plus fork offered by a U.S. manufacturer with four letters will serve as a quiz filling an entire afternoon in view of the possible combinations of basic and sticker colours, cassettes, derailleur sizes, inner bearings, disk brakes, different fork shafts, dampening systems and remote switches.
Last but not least, there is colour ahead!
The list continues with a variety of front and rear axle standards, seat post sizes and head set standards that are meanwhile available.
One can only agree to the comments in the trade press after a felt eternity or to quote Henry Ford: “Any customer can have a bike painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black”, cheered up, if at all, by a thin decorative strip in daring red, there is now colour ahead in 2011. Next to the rich colour selec-
But no need to worry about any of these things! Our RADON team is already taking care of it, every single day and loving it!

so well, but was an excellent thinker. Hardly any other market was as complex in demand and supply as the bike market. With help of the media, the industry was able to carve out increasingly more terrains on the landscape and define continuously more areas of application. No other market had ever created nearly as much artificial demand.
Take a short breath, please. The hardtail was followed by the full-suspension bike. Full-suspended bikes took away the fear of steep downhills but starved uphill. Pedal kick back ate away from the meniscus, and bobbing ate away sanity. People would ride in groups and the hardtails would disappear only to be overtaken again by the “downhillers” before reaching the valley. In the end, the two groups went into separate directions and the hardtailers manifested their philosophy of “purity”. Full-suspension riders split up into racers and hardcore bikers. The hardcore bikers became home to freeriders, enduro and downhillers while the hardtail riders divided into urban, single speed bikers and racers. Everybody left standing on the road side wondering why the hell they needed a bike at all were soon heard by the industry as well and presented with the ALL mountain bike.
„Built for all purposes except lawn mowing and the dishes.” 120mm travel quickly grew into 140mm to prevent riders of 120mm forks to have fun with their bikes for too long. 140mm turned into 160mm to make freeriders a bit nervous as well. Hardtails were equipped with 100mm forks, 160mm disk brakes, carbon frames, and now it’s 29” wheels – the Dutch men’s bike sends its greetings! Full suspension bikes suddenly had virtual pivot points, retractable seat posts and a 8 kg combat weight still dreamed of in road racing only five years earlier. Today, “untrained” bikers are offered electric motor kits – pet walking services take the bike out for a walk three times a week for half an hour. All this is wrapped up neatly under an American brand name, so nobody really knoss what it all means or what was just taken out of the store. “A compact disk player on 2 wheels”.
RADON BIKES | HARDTAILS
In the beginning there was a hardtail – suspension-less. It made it easy to get up the mountain and down again. The U.S. guys showed how it was done. Gary Fisher, Joe Breeze, Gary Turner (GT) and whatever their names were. The demand was determined by what the market had to offer – so the classics of economy had been right. But in the end, the name of the winner was Maynard Keynes: The demand was determining the supply. He didn’t bike
Got more questions? Most of us will now know as much as they knew before. We, too, are a little overwhelmed by the craziness. Let our bike developer Bodo Probst explain to you, dear reader, some the key terminology and products we offer as a short introduction to the mystery of biking. “May the force be with you“!

summer. Mallorca offers the perfect conditions for the bike enthusiast to spend a biking vacation in all imaginable ways. Casual and touring bikers can get to know the island on the numerous little side roads and will always find small restaurants and cafés in which the calories that have been burnt can be gained back. For the world cham-
pions in training, the tracks to the interior present themselves where you can cycle for hours around Felanitx, Llucmajor, Algaida or Manacor, freed from any big elevations. An essential part of the the early afternoon is a Café con leche with a piece of almond pie. In almost every village like minded people meet, proudly show off their racing machines and
MALLORCA TRAVEL SPECIAL exchange stories of the troubles of the day. The little village Petra is one of the classics where you can find hundreds of bikers during noon fighting for the free spots in the sun. For those who have already gained enough stamina by spring, the routes in to the Tramuntana mountains are a must. The classic track over the
Puig Major, the Col de Soller and the never ending up and downs into the dead end of Sa Calobra should only be done with training. A must on this track are a coffee and a sandwich in Soller, where you sit directly next to the mountain tram on the main square, which divides some of the cafés into two halves.
When you want to rest we recommend taking a route along the coast where you can let your eyes wander across the sea and let yourself get carried away with your thoughts, wondering if biking is the cleverest way of spending your time. 15
HARDTAIL Fast Light Indestructible
16
RADON BIKES | HARDTAILS
The hardtail (or in other words “the stiff end”) is meanwhile the most purist of all bikes, as the fully unsuspended form of mountain biking has almost come to extinction and is today found and accepted only among hardcore cross-country riders. When the first Rock Shox suspension fork made its somewhat bumpy and oil leaking start at the mountain bike front towards the beginning of the 1990s with an unbelievable 45mm fork travel, the number of people who believed that the concept would find approval in the broad mass of bikers boiled down to a handful of visionaries … Today, of course, we all know better, and next to such unheard concepts as disk brakes for bikes at the time, the suspension fork has become fully established on the market and is a vital part of modern MTBs. Travel has grown into 100mm, upper and lower tubes have been adjusted to respond to the enormous forces of a disk brake and adjustments that once required a lot of fumbling around are now done in just a few steps. In times of ultra-fast full suspension bikes, the hardtail that used to be frowned upon continues to be the most popular bike category offering easy handling and lots of riding pleasure. Starting already in the lower price classes, hydraulic disk brakes and fine-tune forks offer highest comfort. By spending a bit more money, the rider can get an incredible light weight of around 8 kg and achieve breathtaking acceleration rates. However, now and then, the heart of a hardtail continues to be the frame that either offers brutal stiffness or comfort depending on the material. RADON’s hardtail series addresses the entire material range from steel, titanium up to aluminium and carbon. You choose the weapon in the game!

RADON BIKES | HARDTAILS
“Light, stiff, fast, comfortable and beautiful” were the attributes that guided us through our project “New Carbon Hardtail”. One of the top priorities for the new generation was to advance and improve the already successful MCS. We are proud to have achieved each of our goals in our “Black Sin” and are now excited to offer the bike temptation to all those seeking highest performance in cross-country and fighting it out for every second. Our new Top Cross Country Hardtail with a frame weight of approx. 1,050 grams features organically designed tubes with the upper tube smoothly connected to the rear end in a “one-piece-design”. The frame features Flex Stays and slightly flattened seat stays for enhanced comfort without loosing stiffness. The stays absorb the roughest bumps and support the rider’s muscles. The frame’s state-of-the-art technology includes rear post mount disks brakes, cables tucked away inside the frame, a conical shaped head tube of 1 1/8“ at the top to 1.5“ at the position of the fork (RADON Conehead) for enhanced stiffness as well as press fit inner bearings. The seat tube has a diameter of 27.2mm for more riding comfort. The profiled down tube and massive bottom bracket provide brutal stiffness. The Black Sin has a monocoque frame with inner mold technology and latex core. But these are only the hard facts. What is more important is the awesome feeling when you jump on the Black Sin and the sense of speed you get when you get going...

TITANIUM Titanium – Such stuff as dreams are made of No other frame material lives up to the beauty, durability and lightness as titanium in combination with alloy and vanadium. But at the same time no other material also requires as much expertise in frame building and is as expensive a material. In the past, bikes made from this superior and rare element used to be extremely expensive and provided almost exclusively by small custom-shops in the United States. We at RADON have made this classic available to everyone – at an unbeatable price for a complete bikes, which is usually paid for the frame only. In 2008, RADON offered titanium bikes for the first time, which led to quite a stir-up on the market. Our current Radon titanium offers the technical state-ofthe-art: featuring a sporty and stretched geometry 24
for 100mm forks and a very low frame weight (1,400 grams in the 18“ frame size), this bike is made for titanium fans who do not want to miss out on the dampening characteristic of the frame material when in the fast lane. Titanium as frame material is highly resistant and requires only minimal care to look like a bike coming fresh out of the shop for many years ahead and whose elegant and classic appearance will always be an eye-catcher. In 2011, RADON’s titanium bikes feature a fully revised frame with enlarged tube diameter and bent rear end for additional comfort. In combination with exclusive accessory parts by DT Swiss, Tune, Ritchey and Shimano, this leads to a beautiful, fast and comfortable bike, which is not seen every day…

RADON GOES SYLT The narrowest part of the beautiful North Sea island of Sylt is home to the small and scenic island village of Rantum and, right behind the first dunes and famous beaches, to the legendary restaurant “Sansibar”. More than thirty years ago, Herbert Seckler laid the groundwork for the in-crowd beach café as it exists today and that has grown into one of the most popular eating places on the island and maybe even around Germany. Sansibar Shops that sell the products offered by the think-factory on Sylt are meanwhile found all around Germany and
spread the island restaurant’s charm. In 2010, we at RADON will be contributing to the Sansibar product range with an all new cross bike in the design of the legendary beach café. The Sansibar Bike will be a stylish, black coloured cross bike with superior component parts for fans of the famous restaurant. For SANSIBAR, our RADON scart cross frame will feature a comfortable suspension fork, sturdy and weather-proven disk brakes, Shimano gear parts and trendy Race Face components.

Full suspension: When biking begins to be fun! At the beginning of the 1990s, the classic mountain bike still knew no such thing as a suspension system. But even a lawn mower came with rear and front dampening. Does that mean we are talking about progress in bike development? Bikes were at the heart of an emerging mainstream sport. The racing bike as sports bike par excellance of the nineties began to see serious competition. The first suspension forks were installed and quickly demonstrated the potential of the mountain bike even to the most sceptical riders. The next logical step was the dampening of the main frame. Naturally, the first full suspension bikes still left a lot of room for improvement. It first took the revolutionary AMP full suspension developed by Horst Leitner to come onto the scene. For the majority of systems, the weakest point was the bottom bracket and the dampening of the spring element. Twenty years of evolution made full suspension bikes what they are today: Total fun machines whose intelli-

SKEEN 28
RADON BIKES | FULLY
Chief developer Bodo Probst and RADON builder Chris Stahl both come from motor sports and both were driven by the idea of creating a super-fast full suspension bike. In secret, both dreamed of developing the fastest bike on earth that would always be ahead of the game while featuring 120mm of travel and a comfortable suspension system. The result of these fast thinking was the flagship of the race and marathon full suspension bikes: the SKEEN. However, a racer driven by athletic bodies rather than highly tuned engines.
Location: Lanzarote, Spain
Many months of development and an endless number of test rides out on the trail were followed by a nervous phase of waiting for the first test results: In January, the team finally received the relieving news… the SKEEN had succeeded in the renowned testing by BIKE Magazine and been recognized as fastest full suspension bike of the season. The SKEEN is officially the fastest bike on earth! This bike lets you handle even roughest terrain in every riding situation. Other than hard to handle race cars, the speed experience will be pure fun for you. When developing the SKEEN, this had been one of the key aspect: Every detail of this bike was meant to transmit the rider’s muscle power to the ground efficiently and without losses and to steer the bike exactly where the rider wants it to go: Highest stiffness and steering precision are guaranteed by the superior hydro-formed tubes, the conically-shaped steer head (RADON CONEHEAD) as well as the selected fork or the thru axle system on front (QR 15) and rear (X12). Taken together, all these details turn the SKEEN into a true precision machine, which reveals its other, more receptive side when going downhill: Here, the suspension fork seems to offer much more than expected from 115mm of travel allowing for maximum control… Highly recommendable also for racing car enthusiasts!

SKEEN CARBON

RADON BIKES | FULLY With the Skeen, our team of engineers at RADON has raised its own bar. The goal was to build a follow-up of the fastest full suspension bike on earth that would be even faster and lighter. The only way to achieve this without sacrificing on the superb damping characteristics of the aluminium Skeen was by use of a carbon frame. We believe to have mastered this difficult task and are confident that the upcoming tests in the major trade magazines will prove our success. We are excited to ear the results of the testing crews. Internal tests under racing conditions have already shown that the work has been done right. The enhanced version of the Skeen relies on a Toray 40T fibre monocoque frame with inner mold technology. The carbon frame is made for 100mm travel to improve the racing characteristics. The rear end features the usual, strong 115mm that become responsive to small bumps only downhill. Similar to its brother Black Sin, the new Race Fully flagship Skeen Carbon features Press Fit inner bearings, RADON’s Conehead, cables tucked away inside the frame, post mount disk brakes on the rear end and a 27.2mm seat post. The design of the frame is similar to the aluminium SKEEN with the only exception that the carbon version does not include front and rear thru axles to reduce weight.

QLT RACE In the season 2010, the bestseller and success bike in RADON’s full suspension series amazed with a completely new design and improved rear end kinematics. The team of developers around Bodo Probst left no stone unturned and fully revised the bike with the aim of providing additional riding pleasure and maximum performance at the lowest price. One of the key requirements was to improve the economy of the suspension system to prevent energy loss on the trail while continuing the typical QLT comfort. The rear end has been made more efficient than ever offering unlimited riding pleasure to full suspension newcomers as well as pros. At the same time, the frame weight has been reduced by approx. 150 grams compared to the previous model. Another great advantage of the new QLT Race is the easy and unproblematic adjustment of the fork elements. The sum of all these improvements makes the QLT Race an ideal bike for both, full suspension newcomers and veteran riders.

STAGE A quick glance at the New Stage is enough to see that no stone has been left upon another and that our team of developers has done everything right => The Stage has turned into a completely new bike. The result is impressive and to quote chief developer Bodo led to the “all-round talent” in RADON’s full suspension series. For 2011, the geometry has been optimized with a slightly lower upper tube to provide more flexibility. Everybody from all-mountain bikers with less experience as well as tough touring riders and alpine crossers will find the New Stage to be a loyal and potent companion whose 120mm front and rear travel reveals it strengths in every imaginable riding situation whether uphill or downhill. The kinematics is designed to minimize energy loss and maximum comfort to live up to what is expected from an all-mountain bike. Most of all, the Stage is characterized by a balanced design and equipment. High-end materials and manufacturing techniques will put a lasting smile on your face on your touring and marathon trips and do away forever with difficulties on the trail. State-of-the-art damping technology combined with sophisticated and proven kinematics let the Stage take away the fear of tree stumps on the trail and help you push your limits! DESIGNED FOR RIDING!

This allows for the use of chain guides or the Hammerschmidt crankset. Different from the all-mountain bike, the SLIDE ED’s hydro formed tubes are reinforced at expense of a moderately higher weight of approx. 100 grams for when it gets rougher on the trail. The rear end kinematics with Quarto-Link technology developed by Bodo Probst will remain unchanged in 2011 due to its superior performance. Only the cable guides will be redesigned analogous to the RADON Skeen and Slide AM.

In a similar fashion, our Enduro RADON Slide ED has been convincing to more than one tester in the last year. With extremely smooth 160mm suspension and an ideal touring weight, the bike offers the broadest application range of all RADON bikes spanning the divide between bike parks and hardcore alpine cross.
In 2011, RADON’s SLIDE ED series ranges from exclusive custom-shop touring bikes with a combat weight of 11.7 kg up to the hottest bike park model of the year: the Slide ED 160 5.0, available at an unbeatable price of € 1,499.

hen one of the most glamorous British public figures, Charles Henry, Earl of March and Kinrara, heir to the 11th Duke of Richmond, Gordon and Lennox, holds the annual „Festival of Speed“ in the garden of Goodwood House in WestSussex, which has the dimensions of a medium-sized British town, the former and present stars of bike racing do not come alone. They bring along a crowd of over 150,000 spectators. Furthermore, the estate has the third largest British horse racing track with 20,000 seats, a golf course, a hotel, a pheasantry and the venerable Goodwood racing track, which circles the former military airport of his grandfather. Since charity is the virtue of British grand dukes, Lord March, as he is officially called, makes his racing track available to the annual MS charity event: MS CIRCUIT. sunny splendour. Our team started the 80km sprint with the head of the Radon development team, Lard Wiegand and the team rider Marc Müller. Lars Wiegand won the fabulous 2nd place in the end spurt with an average of 42 km/h. Marc Müller came in 8th. In the second race our team rider Jens Dix achieved a hands-down victory, closely followed on bike‘s length by our CEO Chris Stahl. The ladies competition was won by our Radon team rider Zola Meerfeld, followed by Christina Stahl. At the awards ceremony, the prizes
which had been provided by ourselves were set aside (the British way!) and we left it at enjoying the standing ovations of the enthusiastic audience. The cherry on the cake was the proud sum of 5000 Pounds for the MS charity and the enthusiasm of the English for the Radon models and their performance. In the end the island was left with Radon madness instead of the mad-cow disease.

TREKKINGBIKE Help: I once used to be a bike!
44
Have you enjoyed our magazine so far – or have just opened the page? Either way! What is important is that you are looking for a bike. So what is the definition of a bike under the earlier terminology? A Dutch men’s bike? A city or a touring bike? You will find that none of these names are used anymore today. But relax. You want to be outside. You need a mode of transportation or maybe you are looking for a city cruiser. You want to spend the weekend riding with your family. Perhaps you have even lost your driver’s license. To get to the point: You are now looking for a bike!
Today, when we speak of a bike, we usually mean a trekking bike. Were you able to take something out yet? Why not move on: In any case, what you are looking for is a trekking bike – to stay with the terminology – one that meets the high safety requirements of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) and DIN standards and that fulfils our need for high quality. This is the reason why we decided not to offer a trekking bike in the lower price segment (below € 500) as a general rule.
RADON BIKES | TREKKING Trekking bikes can generally be broken down into two categories. 1) cross bikes (without road equipment) and 2) trekking bikes (including road equipment). The differences between the two groups are due to equipment and component parts. The higher the quality of a bike, the lighter it will be. With the Urban Titanium, we have achieved a lightweight trekking bike with full road equipment and a weight of less than 10 kg. Trekking bikes with regular solid equipment require a hub dynamo, a robust rack, a smooth and intuitive gear system and hydraulic brakes. The bike should also have hollow section rims (mind the kurbs-
tone!) and an ergonomically shaped geometry, what’s more, a gel saddle and handles as well as adjustable stems. On the entry-level, such a trekking bike typically weighs around 14 kg. If the bike is required to be lighter (which leads to faster boost, easier handling uphill and safer braking), it should have a high-end frame and lighter component parts. Touring trekking bikes should also include a solid rear rack and disk brakes. All of our trekking bikes guarantee sophistication and pure riding pleasure!

SKILL
You still have not found what you are looking for. The Scart is too trekking oriented, the racing bike is too special. You are looking for a piece of training equipment for “normal people“, a bike that combines as many characteristics as possible. What name would be more suitable for such a bike than Skill? In 2010 the name Skill stands for a completely new bike category. Constructed as a street bike with racing bike components, but with a more comfortable sitting position than that of classical racing bikes, the Skill stands for the category of “fitness bikes”. The attributes of this bike are speed paired with comfort and suitability for long distance. Due to the straight fork, the 46
steering is very precise and suitable both for the city as for an athletic tour. For 2011, the construction of the SKILL will be even more sporty, through the skilled choice of components. The bikes are equipped with a high quality mix of Shimano racing bike and mountain bike components, which means that outstanding smoothness and precision are guaranteed.

especially high comfort. Furthermore, we could reduce the weight of the frame to 1600 grams by optimizing the tube form.
Nobody can forge happiness for life, only for the moment. That was the premise with which our development team created the new Titan trekking frame. We wanted to create a product for eternity that can keep up with the most modern aluminium frames and surpasses them in terms of comfort.
Thereby we have created the basis for a super light bike. It is completely suitable for daily use with a hub dynamo and a carrier and weighs 9.6 kg. With this bike every ride becomes an adventure, and this for the next decades.
In cooperation with Bodo Probst, we managed to combine the high comfort which the Ti 3AL/2,5V Titan alloy offers with a frame form which is adjusted to the specific pressure. In the steering and bottom bracket areas, the frame distinguishes itself by the high-volume tube diameter. As a result we accomplish a perfect propulsion and direct steering. The seat tube has been reduced to 27.2 mm in order to accomplish

TCS | TLS Did you read about the Scart – or skip it? Never mind – you have landed at the right place if you are looking for the most successful trekking bike of the last years. No other trekking bike has scooped as many tests as the TCS Trekking Comfort Series.

Outstanding, the prototype of a trekking bike, a masterpiece, incredible: the media can not be wrong. But what distinguishes the TCS from other bikes in the end? The TCS is designed for comfort and perfect functionality. The geometry of the frames is comfortable and still propulsion oriented. The bike is the perfect companion for everyday life, no matter if it is for a
short stretch to work of for a weekend trip. So far so good, many trekking bikes of other manufacturers have all these features as well. But, but, but, they are much more expensive. With Radons TCS line you pay only for the bike and nothing else. Isn‘t that what you want? For the 2011 season the TCS comes with a completely revised, weight-optimized tube set, which saves approximately 350 grams of weight compared to its predecessor. In addition to the smaller dimensioned seat post with a diameter of 27.2 mm, the lowering of the bottom bracket by 1.5 cm adds to the increase of

comfort. In order to optimise the handling characteristics with heavy baggage, the head tube has been slightly shortened and the carrier fixing has been slightly modified. If you would like to have it a little more sporty and want to exchange the suspension fork for weight advantages, the TLS (Trekking Lite Series) is the right choice. With an average weight saving of approx. 2.5 kg and more sporty ergonomics the bikes of the TL-series especially appeal to tempo-oriented all-rounders. The technical changes of the TCS line will of course be found with the TLS series as well. The TLS models offer
a similar dynamic as a cross bike and high-grade road equipment: therefore, it is a little less sporty than the Scart but for every day use. TCS 9.0 Outstanding! Price performance Tip! 01-02/2010 TCS TR Rohloff Top class! Outstanding! 06/2008 TCS 9.0 Disc Excellent! Tip! 02/2010

SUNSET The newest RADON stroke of genius for the trekking sector is called the SUNSET. According to the name, the bike will tempt you to prolong your tour into the sunset. Our SUNSET will be the highend bike of the trekking sector. It offers a completely new, weight-optimized frame, which serves as the basis for very light, sporty and comfortable trekking bikes. The weight of the frame will be slightly below 1,600 grams and the seat post is reduced to 27.2 mm for higher comfort. Internal cable routing and polished seams provide for a sophisticated impression of the design that appeals to the eye. The form of the frame is matched with the MTB flagship Skeen and offers an independent, self-confident look, with its elaborately hydroformed tubes. The high level of expectation placed on the SUNSET is emphasized by the high quality equipment packages, which round up the complete package and sweeten every single tour … into the SUNSET.

SCART
Why is the Scart called Scart? Ten years ago our cross bikes were called Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. Yawn, most of you are most probably thinking – how original. Okay, you are right – meanwhile we are of the same opinion. Five years ago, we had the incredible idea to call the cross bikes TCS Cross, derived from the trekking series TCS. For example, one model was called TCS Cross 7.0, Suspension, Disc, 58 cm, H, white. You will need a decoding machine for that. The solution: It is a men‘s cross bike from Radon, in white, 58 cm frame, in the 7.0 edition with suspension fork and disc brake. Now you are thinking: they are out of their minds. You are right again – we were. That is why the Scart is now called Scart, because all Radon models start with an S and Scart has such a nice sound to it. Okay, it might not be very fancy either, but simple.
What distinguishes a Scart? A Scart is a slimmed-down trekking bike, a so-called cross bike, with the emphasis not on every day usability but on sportivity. The Scart is the 100% synthesis of a racing bike and a mountain bike. As swift as an arrow and without loss of drive, it is the ideal sport equipment for every terrain: no matter if you are in the city, on a field track or along the Rhine, this bike lifts your spirits anywhere. It is a companion for the beer garden, for loosing weight, for going to 52
work or to a rendezvous. You are always in good company. The top ranks in last years tests of the national bike magazines have convinced us more than ever to send the Scart into the spring with a fresh makeover. A completely new frame made of hydroformed multiply butted aluminium tubes (different degrees of thickness according to the weight) and the newest Shimano outfit in combination with even more efficient brakes are responsible for the fact that we have managed to reduce the total weight of all models, while at the same time increasing the stability (Weight gained on the frame is approx. 350 grams). The necessary riding comfort is established on the one hand through the elaborately load driven formed frame and the suspension fork as well as the seat post with the measurements 27,2mm (compared to the former 31,6 mm). Enough of writing about it, you should just try it for yourself... as they say: Appetite comes with eating.

Of old stagers and newcomers. The racing bike was and still is an explosive issue. To reinvent the racing bike is sheer impossible. There is no other bike where emotions play such a big role as with the timeless racers.
When we first engaged ourselves with racing bikes, the market was simply structured. The frame was manufactured in diamond form, the main material was steel and the tube set was supplied by Columbus, Tange, Ritchey and Hi-Ten. The more unpronounceable the Italian name, the more chic the bike: Guerciotti is an explicit example. The more prominent the rider of the time was, the stronger the urge was to become a rolling legend through an own production line: Moser, Merckx and co send their regards. The “Kölsche” rode a purple-green-red Colnago oe blue Gios. On could hear on the RTFs: Collnaggio or Jios. At the back a Campa or Dura Ätze was hung on the bike. The less well-to-do rode Wheeler, Longus or Olmo with 105 or 600 (the Ultegra of the time). A racing bike weighed 10 kg on average, the light ones weighed 8.5kg. The old stagers stuck their rubbers, the newcomers rode Conti GP 18mm. The forks were made of steel, the wheel rims mostly were Mavic Open 4 CD 32 spokes front radial, rear 36 whole crossed when the rider had a belly. There were the good old strap pedals and everybody who thought something of himself rode „Rolls“ saddles.

So far so good: If the cowboys had not come: Suddenly titanium bikes were the latest trend: Forged in argon rooms, that was something only the Americans could do: Litespeed, Serotta, Merlin. The headsets came from King, the cranks from Ritchey or Grafton, the non-Shimano bikes ultimately became cult because of the bad Dollar-Yen exchange parity. Along came the aluminium frames: small at the forefront: glued inside bearings, 1.5” headsets, airbrush in coral reef, gator-linearfade, horizon: the dream “Quantum Pro”. The wheel sets perverted: The nonplus ultra: Spengle Carbon. The triathletes determined the scene: you wore Oakley, you rode Flite, the jerseys up to the nipples, the swim shorts with inserts, Speedplay Bryne pedals: The time of Quintana Roo and Principia had come. The athletes rode into the transition area with 26” wheels, the masses used them to go to the ice cream parlour. Allsop build racing bikes with swingarms, Jürgen Zäck won in Hawaii. The market boomed with innovations, the people from Cologne were appalled. Eventually it was suddenly all over: slipstream was allowed, 26” was out of fashion: the TIME after. Everyone built aluminium bikes, the lighter the better. Roger Milnek, who was with ACS at the time, built Principia on the scale: the 5 kg limit faltered. Then came Jan Ulrich and the hype: racing bikes for the masses, the market screamed. Aluminium, Ultegra for 1000 Euro was the big seller. 2Fold

became 3fold. But the lifebuoy was not acceptable. Compact was invented and again the chain on the right. The old brand names gave way, the new brand names established themselves. Radon started a unique race to catch up, which we have completed today. Numerous tests won, purchase tips and nominations for the milestone of the Tour 2009 crowned our career. What remained, what is to come? The Retro rides our steel line “Chris Steel”, the comfort driven aesthete rides the “Radon Titan series”, the all-rounder aluminium, the competitive gets a good shaking on the Carbon. The back stays got thinner on almost all models because the demand for comfort grew noticeably in the last years: Back to the Roots. Big dimensioned Pressfit inner bearings and 1.5“ headsets à la Gary Klein ( he was pretty advanced back then!!!) are trend, while Shimano stays the main supplier, Campa is too expensive and SRAM has not asserted itself yet. The average weight lies at 8.5 kg, aluminium is still the main material, the colours stay cool, anodisations achieve a noticeable weight advantage. Nowadays the wheels are all ready manufactured wheel sets with aerodynamic advantages. The brakes are still pivot brakes, Conti or Schwalbe: views differ on the 23” tires: „ One says this, the other that”, says the old guy from Cologne on his Colnago, while he has the young guy from Bonn hard at his heels.

RPS Among the racing bikes of the Radon series the RPS is the most versatile model. With its comfortable geometry, it fully satisfies the racing bike beginner. He can rely on perfectly functioning components and a feel-good geometry and can therefore totally concentrate on the new feeling of gliding along. As the winner of several tests, the RPS impresses with a very rigid chassis and a not overstretched sloping geometry on long tours and impresses advanced riders as well with its sporty genes. Through its sloped top tube and its thereby further pulled out seat post in combination with a moderate top tube length, a lot of comfort is generated.
In the 2011 season the RPS 9.0 keeps the competition at bay again with Shimano’s new Ultegra fitting, the carbon fork and Fulcrum wheel sets and can therefore show you new paths...

ROAD STEEL You have to be slightly crazy to start a project with a steel frame in times of carbon frames below 1000 grams, heated shoe soles for biking tours in winter and electronic gear shifts. After all, the great days of Fusto Coppi and Eddi Merckx are long gone and steel frames are ostracised as soft and no longer up-to-date. That was precisely the reason for the RADON development team to approach this issue and design a steel frame for a racing bike, which was supposed to be nostalgic and emotional on the one hand and modern and highly technological on the other. A stable and light reminiscence of the golden years of cycling. The frame, which is to be found under a stylish retro-varnish, is forged by hand out of the noble, light and rare Columbus Life tube set in Germany and is processed perfectly according to the requirements set by our team. Equipped with exquisite parts, produced only as a limited edition and put out on the market in a homoeopathic manner, the Road Steel is directed at aesthetes and true lovers of cycling. With its light weight and its great measured values, it tempts you to go on lively rides and is almost too precious for racing... The result of all the effort was a nomination for the Milestone Award of TOUR magazine in 2009. That makes us proud and confirms that we are on the right track. For the 2011 season, the Road Steel will come back weight-optimized, even more exquisite, even better … for the one who chooses to ride it!

ROAD TITANIUM For the demanding rider, the purchase of a racing bike is the crowning of his or her hobby. Titanium bikes are especially suited for this purpose. If you decide to buy one, you buy it for eternity. Although it is uncompromising and suitable for racing, it still looks like the dream of days gone past and thereby also like that of today, even if it has been in use for years. Even the varnish can never go out of fashion, as there is none. There is only a subtle sticker set which flatters the exquisite silky shining tubes, in order to not cover too much of the beautiful material. This ensemble is combined with high quality Campagnolo circuit components from Italy, which fit in perfectly with the exquisite tubing with their clear design and appearance. Next to all the beauty and immortality, our RADON Road Tiatnium frame offers the inner values of a top athlete as well: very good rigidity values are coupled with a sportively stretched geometry and a very good weight of approximately 1,350 grams. The material characteristics of titanium do the rest to bring the proud owner many years of joy with his or her bike: Anyhow the titanium dampens the road unevenness, but we have reinforced this with a bent chain stay for the year 2011. Therefore, a titanium bike is perfectly suited for long-distance routes and will be a faithful companion for many kilometres.
