HEAD IN THE CLOUDS For people who don’t like wearing helmets, the Swedish company Hövding has found the alterative solution to the clumsy polystyrene.

Hövding is a scarf that you put around your neck and in an emergency transforms to a life saving airbag for bikers.

The built-in high-tech sensors notice typical movements in case of an accident and when the case, triggers off the airbag. Within 0,1 second this protection covers your head like a shell and protects your head – even better than a classical helmet would do. SKEEN Just in time for spring, we have finished our marathon weapon Skeen - the new 2013 Radon Lineup (selected and elected from Bike editors in 2009 as the fastest bike in the world). The two guys tobogganed down the bobsleigh track on their Swoop 175 and Slide 130 29‘ for the new Radon video in Winterberg. 1,600 metres of blank ice and with an average speed of 60 km/h! Right in the middle of the winterly ‘ski happening’ our downhill and Enduro enthusiasts made heads turn! Well equipped with spiked tyres and winter clothing, Andi and Julian rode uncountable times down the ice channel. At the beginning, with loads of respect for the unknown territory, later with enthusiam and andrenalin in blood.

In the latest AM-test (MB 03/13) Slide 150 10.0 was praised because of nippy performance, efficient suspension system and high quality features. The 8.0 version is around € 1,000 cheaper but is still a great deal of bike. The durable Shimano XT/SLX-propulsion ensures a smooth change of gears. The remote controlled lowerable Reverb-Vario-support and the grippy tyres provide safety on rugged land.

This bike, with its 13,6 kg doesn’t belong to the leight-

weights but thank ergonomic seat positionand light wheels it speeds well and climbs willingly. Downhill the suspension sticks to the trail and is comfortable and grippy. The Fox fork operates sensitively – doesn’t exploit the spring deflection completey. Slide is very agile – borders on neurosis – and tempts the biker to be playful. The only criticism it received was the Formular RX Disc, with its shifting centre of pressure that must be remedied per service.

Radon has extended its commitment in the racing sector and is supportung the Enduro team this year under the responsibility of Oliver Fuhrmann. Fuhrmann, who has been riding BMX since 1982 and since 1993 has been taking part in Mountain bike races, is the new Radon team coach and manager. With his successful athlete agency, Selmastar, Führmann has gained the necessary know-how of how to get the best out of a young team over the last few years. The team is composed of five Enduro riders, one being Führmann himself, furthermore Julian Gerhardt, Jessica Schmulbach, Sandy Fleicher and Benny Oluch, who has already shown his talent in the Radon Factory DH Team. The riders will take part, together, in all important championships – for example the specalised SRAM Enduro Series, the European iXS Cup as well as all big bike festivals. Radon supports young talents with all their power and is looking forward to an exciting 2013 racing season.

Oliver runs the SelmaStar.de agency that deals with sportevents, layouts and looking after the atheletes competeing in events concerning mountain biking and BMX. In his sports career, Oliver was a member of the BMX as well as the mountain bike national team. Oliver is team principal, trainer and was German BMX champion in 2009 and 2011.

After a long hard winter, you should give your bike a small MOT. Here we are going to show you how you can get you bike fit for spring.

ATTEND TO YOUR CHAIN A dry chain wears quickly, that’s why it should be left to dry for about an hour.

Afterwards you drizzle a little oil onto the chain, or you spray it with grease. Every link should be lubricated individually, at the same time turning the crank. Let it absorb for about 20 minutes then wipe the superflous grease away with a lintfree cloth. Lightly oil your gearshift rollers, rear dérailleur spring and front dérailleur bearings.

CHECK YOUR BRAKE PADS CH Road salt makes probR lems for brake pads, that’s why you should examine them meticullously. Take off the wheel.

Loosen the circlip (spring washer) and then the fixing screw. You carefully press back the pads with a tyre lever. Then release the spreader, with the pads, from the brake calliper. If the pads show 1 mm thickness, then you should exchange them very quickly for new ones.

TYRE INSPECTION To have the necessary grip on the track, your tyres should have enough tread. The more worn ttyre should be mounted att the rear, as high grip is very important at the front. Check the pressure with a floor pump: Your 2.25“ Mountainbike tyres should be filled with 2 bar air (calculated for 70kg weight).

Lighter riders deduct 0,4 bar air.

LOOK AFTER YOUR PEDALS LOO Remove any ugly rust with R sandpaper (180 grain).

Then drizzle a couple of drops of oil onto them.

CHECK YOUR SCREWS Check all your security C related screw joints on your bike with a torque wrench. You will find tthe tighteneing torque in your manual.

Cinematik-Guru Bodo Probst has, once again, great success. ’I wanted to build a tour-suitable freerider bike’, said Probst. ‘It should give a maximum of safety and control downhill’. Amazngly enough, he’s managed it! His new development has amazed us. 180 millimetres at the front and 175 at the rear – the Swoop belongs to the suspension wonders in test area, at the same time only weighing 13,8 kg. The long wheelbase, a flat steering angle, low bottom bracket and high-qualit suspension generate a smooth running, that enthralls. Only with the Rose can you ride faster through stony areas. Until now, we had to make a compromise with little weight and going downhill, as in the similarly lightweight Lapierre or Scott "Genius

LT" (not in this test) that has much the same suspension, but not this downhill performance. The smooth running of the Radon Swoop is however at the expense of manoeuvrability. It seems large, has a long chainstay and therefore doesn’t circle as nimbly around tight bends. Radon is making rivalry to the ‘price breaker’ YT and has built in only high quality parts such as Fox 36‘ Talas fork 180Fit RC2 with their lowable option and kashima coating. The Easton Havoc wheels are the lightest in test, even though they have Hans Dampf tyres. Rechanged: the cockpit from prototype (Easton Havoc-handlebars and stub stem) was favoured than the Kombi von Syntace that was used on the test bike.

Exhausted from the long journey and a little pale in the face, our team surveyed the track. Tough Guy veteran, Nowi, who was doing the challenge for the fifth time, explained to his colleagues the pitfalls of the course. Technical Control Board approved and DIN standards? Nothing of the sort! Unknown words here! All we could see were worried faces and doubt

-whether this race could be successfully completed. What had these volonteers signed up for? Frozen puddles, ice-cold water, electric shocks, long narrow tunnels, mud, fire and smoke. The list of the obstacles along the 16km course is long … But, as we were there, backing down was not an option. After the starting shot on Sunday at 12.00, all you could here was testosterone filled yells and 4,359 participants started their way

in the icy cold. All were full of adrenaline and relieved that the race had started. As soon as there was movement, the coldness wasn’t a problem any more. But waiting at obstacles made the race to an absolute torture. Thick ice floes bore in shinbones causing painful wounds and bruises. But our boys were brave. By means of team spirit and mental endurance, all eight members managed to get through the finishing line – undercooled but relieved. Alto-

gether, 3,650 participants (many women among this number) managed it to the end of the course - shivering, crawling, jumping and diving. The Tough Guy competition isn’t only muscle power and best time, but, as stupid as it may sound, the collective time together going through hell. At the end, you look into faces that are battle-weary with a deathly pallor, but happy to have survived this torture.

Once and never again? We will see!

The longsword started to beome blunt in 1985; the wished-for sales figures weren’t as high as expected and the selling of Katana was stopped. The markets seamed at that time not mature enough for the aggressive design.

SUSPENSION SET-UP? DEAD EASY! TECHNICAL HARMONY OF AN ALL-MOUNTAIN-BIKE – RADON SLIDE 150 When technically aligning a full suspension-bike, the first step is to set the fitting suspension travel (or sag).

Although the word negative sounds negative, it does entail positive handling ... namely more traction and control. Were there no suspension travel, the front wheel would spring from a small root on the ground to another and between these roots the bike would constantly be in the air. The suspension travel allows the suspension fork or the rear shock to maintain a constant ride between the impacts when riding over unevenness – this means that you have a better grip and more ground contact.

Ideally this work, as shown here, shouldn’t be done alone because the cyclist should sit on his bike (as he does on his trail). The second person stops him from falling over – which is quite helpful!

STEP 1 – CURRENT NEGATIVE SPRING DEFLECTION The cyclist has to get on his bike while the second person looks out that he/she doesn’t fall. Now the cyclist compresses the frame with a couple of

powerful jolts. As soon as the springs have settled the cyclist takes his/her normal cycling position – with an AllMoúntain Bike such as SLIDE RADON 150 9.0 is this the sitting pedaling position.

! TIP The cyclist should be clothed as on a normal tour – filled hydration pack and what is otherwise taken on a tour.

STEP 2 – SHIFTING THE O-RINGS For the next step the cyclist has to sit still in the saddle, because the helper has to move the rubber ‘O’ ring, right up to the main seal of the spring element and dampers – this gives us information about the current negative suspension.

STEP 3 – GET OFF Now the cyclist has to try to get off the bike without any positional adjustment. The spring elements return, due to this release, back to the status of the maximum suspension travel, but the two seal elements now stay at the point where the „helper“ moved them, et voila; now the negative suspension can be read.

STEP 4 –MEASURING AND CALCULATING The distance between the seal elements and the main seal is now the negative suspension travel. On an all-mountain-bike this should lay around 20 % of the maximal suspension travel on the suspension, here it is around 30mm. At the rear we estimate around 25 % of the damper stroke as negative suspension. The hub on the SLIDE AM is approximately 57 mm, 25 % from this equals between 14 and 15 mm.

STEP 5 – ADJUSTING THE SPRING STIFFNESS Should the desired sum not be reached, whether too much or too little negative suspension, the spring stiffness has to be adjusted. This means altering the air pressure in the air chambers of the spring elements.

This works best when the air springs are either made harder or softer – in 10-PSI steps. After every alteration steps 1-3 have to be repeated. This has to be done until the desired value on the negative susspension has been acquired.

STEP 6 – AND NOW TO THE DAMPERS The suspension travel damping setting, i.e. the dampers for the speed are, by FOX, always red . The suspension fork, after a strong compression, should not move from the ground but should suspension travel, to keep the

LIFESTYLE » TECHNOLOGY traction. To have this, you should turn the red wheel down on the fork in direction „+“ and stress the handlebars jerkily. The fork will now very slowly

suspension travel.

Now slowly turn the wheel in direction „+“ until the suspension fork quickly suspension travels, but doen’t lose any contact to the ground. When you have found the ideal position, then you can level the „suspension travel speed“ of the suspension. In the ideal case the front and rear suspension should show the same suspension travel damping setting. Depending on how you drive, this can be varied, but not too much otherweise it would be incompatible.

TUNING TIPP – ADJUSTING PROPEDAL-DAMPERS On the Fox Float RP23 strut of the Radon SLIDE 150 9.0 it is additionally possible to adjust the bobbing and swaying; Fox calls this ProPedal. The ProPedal can be activated when the blue lever is moved towards the valve.

When the small blue wheel with the numbers 1,2 3 etc. is hoisted, you can turn the lever.

But don’t be afraid. When you loosen the lever again, your SLIDE 150 9.0 will still bounce silky-softly and sensitively – this is how you deactivate your ProPedal.

Lever 3 describes the highest possible bobbing suppression, 1 the lowest. The adjustment of these features is quite easy. Begin first with numer 1 and test if the suspension when riding uphill and with activated ProPedal still bobs and sways. If this is the case change to 2 and test again. If you are still not happy with the result and the suspension still bobs then change the small wheel to number 3.

THE BIKE It looks nearly classic – the Alu frame from Radon. This is probably due to its slim tube forms and the designated frame design. And yet the 29‘ is by no means antiquated, but up-to-the-minute. You will find new standards on the head tube, internal layer casing, wheellock holding device and even a quick release axle with X-12 system. Fully developed, and especially chosen for the 29‘ bike is the 27.2‘ seat post, which offers more comfort than a larger counterpart.

light DT-Swiss-X1600-wheels. These are assembled with Schwalbes Rocket Ron with high-quality EVO rubber compound tyres. A total of 30 gears offer drive and with a chain ring gradation 22, 33, 44, everything from a steep ascend to a steep descend is possible. The 32-FoxFloat model is the evolution model where there is a possibility to set the platform.

It has a heavy cushion-unit cartridge and not the golden Kasima coating of the immersion tube. The total weight of just a little over 11 kg is very good.

The ‘egg-laying, milk-bearing, wolly sow’- doesn’t exist, or does it? Radon is, with its ZR Race, very close to it. That means that you can please every type of biker with this model.

An individual saddle and cockpit-adjustment is compulsory if you want to change from sporty to comfortable. You don’t have to be frightened of the short head tube, because the A-Head cover with round 2 cm lifts the stem to a typical height and gives you room to play. The choice of material as well as the features should please everyone. Aluminium is tough and due to the use of high-qualtiy components, its total weight belongs to the front sector. Its 3x10- transmission with small 22 rings additionally allows a wide operational area.

The seat position is comparable to the driving charaterisitc – balanced. Not as strong in climbing as the Canyon, but therefore more pleasing and less front-heavy on a trail. It received a small portion of critic because of of its normally reliable Fox-Fork. The 32 Float is undamped in the first 2 centimeters – which was primarily noticed in the steep ascension trial.

CONCLUSION Reliable material of the frame, good detailed solutions and high-quality features. All with a balanced geometry – and there you have it, a bike that makes everyone happy.

Who has ever experienced ‘trail exhilaration’ can’t be cured so easily. Exactly this happened to Andi and Martin; two mountain bike trainers from Bonn, who opened their own mountain bike school.

They decided to give their skill and experience over to other bikers and founded in 2012 the MTB school ‘Trailrausch’ (trail exhilaration). The boys teach participants different grades of difficulties with the corresponding fundamentals, so that they can have fun, action and, more important, be in control of their

CONSPICUOUSLY INCONSPICUOUS My first confrontation with the new bike measurement in the flesh was quite sober. From built up hardtail, I’m not quite sure if it will become standard – it’s an absolute prototype. The construction is rather functional. There is no lacquering … 650B or 27,5‘ is still a hotly discussed new territory. Nobody knows where it’s leading; who’s taking part and what it’s actually good for.

We have just pushed through the decision that the 29‘ is our standard model and now the next innovation in measurement -584 mm rim diameter is the current path to bliss …

Back to our prototype; shimmering in Silver – the bike stands in the sun of southern France and is waiting for our first mutual trip, from Roc d’Azur Festival in Frejus leading us over 45 km of challenging and demanding trails. I look down critically at my rustic-style 100mm hardtail, most of the participators don’t have more than 140

mm suspension travel available – and that at the front and rear! I’ll try!

Ten minutes after the starting signal I fight over a steep ramp in the gleamng sun and notice that in compariosn to a 26‘, there’s not much difference. The 650B bike accelerates just as good, although it seems to run better uphill than over obstacles. In the following very fast descent with many roots and irregulartities I notice that the prototype runs a lot more smoothly than a 26‘, without having the massive downhill advantage of a 29‘. With every metre, I feel more comfortable on this bike and the tricky trails fly pass. The „new“ size is not really noticeable right away, to be subjective – it runs better than a 26‘ as it doen’t lose any dynamic (that a 29‘ does) on the trail. Arriving at the finish in Frejus, I am sure that this will fight itself into the new market and not only with long stroked fullies ... the 650B has my vote – already.

GLÜHWEINPARFAIT OR CREME WITH BRAISED PLUMS For 4 Persons 8 yokes 220 g sugar 4 leaves of gelatine 250 ml red wine 4 cl Cassis 1 tsp Sansibar Glühwein-Gewürzmischung (mulled wine spice mixture) 400 g cream 500 g plums (without stones) 200 g sugar Vanilla sugar Mint

1. Mix the yokes with the sugar in the mixer until creamy. At the same time soak the gelatine. Warm the red wine, as well as the cassis and the mulled-wine-mixture and sieve over the beaten yokes. Mix together.

Boil the red wine and egg mixture and then take the pan off the cooking field. Squeeze the gelatine into this mixture. Keep stirring, preferably over iced water, until the mixture is a little cooler. Mix the whipped cream under and fill into cups (half full). Put in the freezer for 5 hours. There is enough for 10 cups.

2. Boil the plums and sugar, they should be lightly overcooked. Leave to cool, but not completely. Place the plums over the parfait. Place whipped cream over the plums.

Decorate with mint.

BAHARAT LAMB WITH TOMATO-VEGETABLES, JOGHURTCREME AND TOASTED BREAD For 4 Persons 2 racks of lamb Salt & pepper Sansibar Baharat mixed spices Sansibar Cajun-mixed spices Olive oil 1 lemon 2 red peppers 2 yellow peppers 6–10 small tomatoes 1 courgette 150 g Greek yoghurt (10 % fat) 1 Baguette

1 Season the racks of lamb with salt, Baharat and grated lemon and leave to draw.

Take out the seeds of the peppers. Cut the courgettes and tomatoes in large pieces.

Marinate the vegetables with salt, pepper, cajun and olive oil for 15 minutes at 180 degrees, then leave to rest for 10 minutes.

2 Add some salt and lemon to the Greek yoghurt. Tear the baguette in pieces and trickle with oil. 5 minutes at 180 degrees.

Take the vegetables out of the oven and put in a bowl. Salt, lemon, olive oil and pepper to taste.

3 Put the vegetables on a warm plate, and the cooked rack of lamb to the vegetables.

Spoon the yoghurtcreme over the vegetables. Serve with the toasted bread.

Several representatives of the media were there to see the newly developed RADON racing bike „Vaillant“ being handed over to the team.

The aero-racing bike, first purchable in summer 2013, should bring the boys a clear aerodynamic advantage in the 2013 season. This bike was exclusively lacquered in the Team Blitz Spich team colours Dieter Kirchartz, who has been a member of this club since 1988, has taken over the sports-mangement position.

Wofgang Thomann, who has been active in cycling since 1960 and knows how the wind blows, is responsible for marketing.

The racing team exists fom eight of the most successfull cyclists in the club, who will be starting in the elite class A/B. We wish the team lots of luck for the 2013 season.

LIFESTYLE » HARIBO 01 COMPUTER AND MILLING MACHINE The hand drawn sketch is eventually scanned into a computer and made into a three-dimensional exact model. The data of this model is then transferred to a high-tech milling machine in which a plaster mould of the new fruit gum figure is made. The form is then used for the production, from which many plaster stamps can be produced.

02 STARCH TRAYS AND PLASTER STAMP Flat boxes are then filled to the brim with starch are transported by a conveyor chain. The hundreds of plaster stamps are now pressed into the starch to make negatives. The negative travels to a conveyor belt to the next stadium where heated fluid fruit gum mixture is poured into the moulds. And there we have several hundred new fruit gums.

RADON SERVICE-PARTNER RADON-Service-Partner Programme has the world’s first project to join specialist shops and distribution for an advantage for all parties concerned.

During our many years of working as bike distributor, specialist shops and bike-repair shops contacted us as, after working with RADON bikes, they would like to expand in this working area. At the same time we heard form the customers’ side that they were having problems with their previous dealers. To still be able to participate in the advantages of the massive savings we were able to give to our customers, we decided to convert our RADON-Service-Partner project from theory into practise and join both groups together.
