RADON SWOOP 175 9.0 ›› Test super enduros: Nothing as impossible!
10
10 out of 10 ts possible poin
Conclusion
Edition 01/14 10 Points
A safe harbour In the last test the Swoop impresses as no other bike. Constructor, Bodo Probst, manages to combine the performance of a freerider with the allround efficiency of an enduro. Quite a revolution – we thought. Then up till now we have been torturing ourselves freeriders up mountains with overweight only to experience maximal fun downhill. Bikes such as those form Radon dig their own grave in the classical freeriders (typical representative; SX Trail from Specialized)- then why heavy when light is also possible. Truth is – and we have been able to collect much know-how with this test – Radon is an ideal ‘do it all’ bike with bikepark suitability. Which means: not only possible – it’s great fun. The fabulous chassis generates comfort and reliability as no other bike in this test field. ‘Full speed round the bends’, was the opinions of the testers. The new built in Fox suspension strut ‘Float X’ with Kashima-coating tickles more out of the chainstays than its predecessor. The geometry pleases – a pleasant reach (we swapped the 65 stem against a 40), long wheelbase and deep bottom bracket bearing.
This Radon belongs to the best selling bikes and shows what wide range of application is possible.
This Radon raced away from the competitiors downhill on its light 26 wheels without appearing bulky. It steers straight with broad handlebars; enjoys being pressed in the curves and surges powerfully in a terrain-spring. So nippy and manageable to handle as, for example the Alutech, is this Radon unfortunately not. This Swoop accelerates over hill and dale pleasantly with its 13,9 kilogrammes. It is also prepared for long rises: steep seating angle, variopost, lowerable fork and double chain ring – so’s the way to climb Alp summits. Uphill

Biking is one of the best sports in the world. And nothing will change that. But in winter, when the cold and wet months have crept up on us we don‘t usually want to do much (or any) cycling due to snow and ice and road salt around. The biker’s blues does seem to catch up with us bikers. So why not try something new? Climbing doesn‘t need favourable weather conditions. By bad weather you can use one of the numerous climbing halls that are springing up everywhere like mushrooms. But be aware! It’s not as easy as you may think. There is more to climbing than just climbing; it‘s about finding a predefined route around either a wall, a mountain or a cliff. This sport is really good because you train muscles that are really helpful for biking.

Climbing is a fantastic sport to compensate the disproportion between upper arms and the circumference of the thighs. The enduro and free-riders’ brake-fingers will be thankful when, in the next season, more power is needed to reduce speed - and to find that there is power there. It‘s the same for body tension- especially the muscle power in the torso that is urgently needed to manoeuvre your bike on its tyre's edge between cliffs and shrubs. When you start your new winter hobby check that you have a certified trainer. Who has a fear of heights or doesn‘t want to be messing around with rope handling can go bouldern;
14 | radon-bikes.com
this is what it‘s called when you clamber from rock to rock without a rope, but with soft mats below. Climbing parks and halls offer taster, beginner and advanced courses, so that everyone can get going -in accordance to their knowledge of bouldern. The necessary equipment such as safety belts, snap hooks and special climbing shoes is usually for hire at the parks. Just ring up and see when the next course starts. And for next summer, Take your bike to the rocks, have a climb and as a reward a super single trail back to the valley.

THE
FANTASTIC
FOUR
Special-Edition Bikes 2014
We have taken our four most favourite bikes and have rethought and reedited them as a special edition - naturally in noble red. Keeping up to our tradition; the fantastic four are top equipped and on sale for a fair price.
An overview of the fantastic four: The classic: ZR Team 8.0 SE Hardtails are mountain bikes that Radon sold right from the very beginning. The product section ‘Hardtails’ price up to €1,000. This seems to be a fiercely competitive challenge between manufacturers. Reason enough for our ZR Team 8.0SE and us to show you that we haven‘t forgotten where our roots are. For only €999 there is a 7005 aluminium frame, rich in features and specially designed for our anniversary. The suspension fork Rock Shox Reba RL – which has been a classic for a long time, keeps things quiet in the cockpit with its 100m spring. The job of changing gears is taken over by the light and reliable Shimano XT components.
Der avant garde: Slide 160 Carbon 650B 8.0 SE „The avant-garde (from French, "advance guard") are people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.“* In the first row, right at the front: Slide Carbon 160. The revolutionary design of this full carbon frame with its extremely elaborate one-piece chainstays is the highlight of the 2014 MTB range. 160 mm spring deflection, lightweight and minimal propulsion impact make this bike to an enduro rocket! This is Joost Wichman’s (4 times world champion) enduro weapon of the season 2014.
The eyecatcher: Swoop 175 8.0 SE Ready for full speed? Chain on the right, what more do you need? The workaholic: Slide 130 8.0 SE Seen as the newest generation of all mountain bike, the Slide 130 with its 29“ wheel size has the greatest range of application in the Radon MTB assortment. From marathon to touring trips up to chasing across blocked terrain; Slide 130 feels at home- anywhere and everywhere. The 29“ wheels shorten the classic 26“ all mountain by 2cm due to its sophisticated roll over characteristic spring deflection - without losing terrain manoeuvrability. It is much more effective due to the now possible tighter tuning. Additionally, better traction is reached because of the larger surface. You’ll certainly have your fun with the 29“ - especially round fast bends.
Higher, further, faster. Those who go to bike parks at the weekend and want to ascend steep roads during the week will be delighted with freerider Swoop 175. We’ve managed to integrate uphill capability into a freerider - enough drive uphill is guaranteed due to a somewhat more vertical seat tube. More fun downhill as well, thanks to improved suspension, a submersed fork plus the very low total weight. Four times red! Means nothing good in most sports but in our case lets every biker’s heart beat faster. One thing is guaranteed; these four special editions won’t land on the substitutes’ bench.

RADON SLIDE 140 7.0 ›› Pathfinder – 8 Tour and trail bikes from € 1,499 – 1,699
Test result 01/2014
ON THE TRAIL The momentary trend is pushing the 26-inch to 27,5inch. Radon too. It is, together with the giant, the favourite in the test-result in this class. The reasons for this are the all-round features in all areas. Firstly the chassis is of superb quality and keeps the balance between effectiveness and the demand for comfort. Effective because a swich drive neutral of the shock absorbers is hardly necessary. This gives the effect a tight or even locked stem. The fork is a different story; after using the remote lever a very tight effect is achieved. A little disturbing is that there is still one to two centimetres that deflect unhindered. It is the only model that has a lowering function. An easy ascent is possible due to the transmission and few thoughts are given to the front wheel. The rear stays good in spring deflection. Downhill, in comparison to the 29 inch bikes, a poorer roll-over resistance is experienced but which Radon has compensated through its good chassis and voluminous 2.35 tyres that offer more damping.
CONCLUSION No way a boneshaker! Radon Slide 140 still belongs- even with 26 inch wheels – to the best tour and trail bike in its class. The well-balanced road behaviour and its chassis are standard. The price advantage due to direct sales makes it even more attractive. PRICE € 1.599 THE BIKE Radon sends its bestseller – unchanged – in the new year, 2014. It is extremely difficult to make considerable changes to a model that was so successful in last year’s tests – even when the trend is moving to 27,5 or 29-inch wheel size. Talking about features, or rather price performance ratio, it is no surprise that the forwarder with its support point partners is at the top of the list. The standard of high-quality switching components, superior spring elements and flawless frames is by no other bike so high as by Radon. The weight of the bike has also been lowered; with its 13,36 kilograms, it’s one of the lightest on the scales, although there is only 700 grams difference to the heaviest model. One highlight of the features is definitely the possibility to control over the handlebars, the blockable and spring deflection reducible Rock Shox Revelation RL Fork. Other highlights are attachment parts from Syntace stem, handlebars and high-quality Schwalbe Nobby Nic EVO tyres. This price advantage is possible due to direct selling. Although these are not normal standards in this class, it is possible to upgrade a vario seat post at a later time with the corresponding slot. radon-bikes.com | 21

Radon » 650B
That With this ZR Race, the 650B is the new size of all things!
great small
wheel measurement
Again, all is moving quickly in the bike branch, when the wheels start rolling. Twenty-niners have widely pushed their way through to the front and are, even in lightweight enduros, hip. Especially racers swear by the fast, large wheels. Now the new wheel-size is jolting its way to the throne of the practically mature 26” circle. 650b or 27,5” marks the golden middle of wheels; one that should be able to do everything. Basically, 650b (from its measurements) is nearer to the 26” than the 29”. Optically, there is hardly a difference between 26” and 27,5”. Consequently, it seems that the 26” mountain bikes’ days are counted, as the slightly bigger brother 650b has hardly any disadvantages but quite a few smaller advantages. Therefore we are also putting emphasis in our new development on the new wheel size. For the now beginning season 2014 we have already adjusted our ZR Race and the brand new Slide 160 Carbon to the middle sized wheels – and this is no disadvantage of the cycling quality. Obstacles are rolled over with ease and tyres give more traction uphill and when riding curves. The minimally higher weight is hardly noticeable. The Radon ZR Race profits from the 650B setup. With the ‘small great’ wheels the hard tail bike keeps its manoeuvrability with which a 29” could only dream of, but with the foresaid advantages of a bigger diameter: more traction and an excellent roll-over resistance.

RICHARD WALCH
the CARRARA PROJECT oth professional photographers Richard Walch and Marcel Lämmerhirt were under the first few who tried out Profoto B1 with compact flash. The new units are the first that can be steered from Canon E-TTL remote control. Due to integrated rechargeable batteries the B1 unit is cablefree and therefore applicable anywhere. The spectacular location chosen was a Carrara marble quarry in Italy where bikers Thomas Ohler and Viki Gomez were photographed.’The idea was to combine breathtaking bike action in a fantastic setting’, so Richard Walch. The challenge lies in such shoots to use a fast and mobile flash. It must be possible to freeze the action but also be able to illuminate the background with a powerful flash. Both jobs mastered Profoto B1 with flying colours. ‘This shooting wouldn’t have been possible without B1’ said Richard Walch. ’System flash units aren’t usually powerful enough for such a job. Apart from that we normally need professional ‘best boy’… At the same time we must be able to apply flexible light sources in the whole quarry. Before the B1 there was no other solution.’ The quarry in Carrara turned out to be anything else but a quiet location. Massive machines moving 40 tonnes of heavy marble blocks around. The team had no other choice than to dodge away from these moving obstacles and to film where possible. ‘Most of the photos had to be taken at two different places’ explained Walch. There is a tunnel that leads to a huge Cathedral in the mountains; this is where we shot the portraits with the blue coloured cliffs. We took the glared red cliff photos where the dredgers crop terraces in the mountain as well as those with the valley in the background.’

Action » PHOTOGRAPHY ichard Walch and his team were faced with a row of challenges.‘Lighting setup without cable was a necessity’, so Walch. ‘Naturally, there weren’t any electrical sockets. Secondly, the bikers needed space to be able to perform. In other words, cables on the floor were a no go. Thirdly, and this the most important point, the bikers don’t stand on one spot all the time – they’re always on the move so that our assistants had to keep changing the flash.’ The team used four B1s for these shots. Two flashes with magnum reflectors and coloured foil on tripods were used for background

lighting. A further two were adjusted to the bikers. The photographer stood in the middle and set off the Air Remote TTL-C flash. A similar lighting setup was used for the photos that were taken in outdoor areas. The B1s that were being held by assistants, had zoom reflectors which made it possible to use the light over a longer distance. ‘This shoot wouldn’t have been possible with a system flash, either.’ Commented Walch. ‘The walls in the background measure 160 metres, every flash had to cover an area of 80 metres. The same applied to the B1 which was used as the main lighting’.

‘If the B1 hadn’t had a TTL function, we would have had to continually recalculate the performance to achieve the correct lighting’, explained Walch.
His conclusion: ’The Profoto B1 opens a whole new world of possibilities to photographers. It’s possible to take photos fully automatically without worrying about the perfect light conditions. It’s also possible to intervene manually, whenever you’d like to and so allowing you to work creatively. The B1 opens a totally new workflow’.
The team used classical lighting setup for portraits. ‘I call this the ‘hero setup’ said Walch. ‘Here we need 3 light sources. We setup B1 with a beauty dish and the B1s with a softbox and softgrid at each side. This setup offers a soft and flattering light whilst the main light contours the face’. RADON SKEEN 10.0 ›› Fleeing the daily routine – 14 touring bikes tested
Issue 02/14 VERY GOOD
26” is dead? Not at all! Even when nearly all 2014 models follow the trend with bigger wheels, there is still exciting, mature and above all really smashing bikes with the primary standard in the bike branch. Skeen, from the Bonn distributor Radon, is a wonderful example – and not just because of its trendy lacquering. This 26” Skeen is a lightweight on the scales weighing only a little over 11 kilos. The rather stiff aluminium-frame isn’t a big help where weight is concerned, but the points go to the fine add-on components such as the super light Mavic system wheel. This lightweight sprints away from most of its competitors, especially as the 115 mm chainstays react drive-neutral, never bobbing or sinking. Unfortunately the seat position doesn’t seem to fit to the racy character. Because of the long head tube and the head set cover you sit straighter quasi too comfortable on Skeen; although, when going downhill the comfortable position conveys reliability and overview. However, this very agile Skeen is a little more nervous than the rest of the (27,5”) test field. But you will notice the short geometry and smaller wheels. No criticism for the Fox-Kashimachassis: sensitive, active – strong.
CONCLUSION Light enough for a long race, comfortable enough for a along tour, the outfitted Skeen is the sportiest bike tested and proves that 26 inch lives on! Character flexible

WINNER RADON SWOOP 210 ›› Novelty-Duel: Super-enduros | Radon Swoop 210 vs. GT Fury Expert
9,5
CONCLUSION Issue 04/13 9,5 Points
THE PRAXIS (...) When you switch from "Fury" direct to Radon’s Swoop 201, it appears to be more natural as it’s very much shorter and lighter (with Continental standardized tyres), just under one kilo, to be exact. The steering angle is, with its 64,5 degrees, over 1 degree steeper and the bottom bracket bearing lies deeper. The numerous differences ensure a more harmonious overall picture. Swoop handles high speed in rough terrains very well. The chainstays work richly and with its excellent road holding ignores near to all knocks. The Air-Fox harmonises effectively and passes on less vibration to the wrists as the cheaper model of the GT. It also behaves totally differently than ‘Fury’ when riding slower and curvier. The shorter wheelbase and the less weight is a positive impact. It goes round bends a whole class better. With its agile handling it’s much more fun in bike parks because you need much less energy to accelerate and it rides more dynamically round bends. The characteristic of the chainstays of the GT is similar. Straight with sufficient reduced travel.
Radon ‘Swoop 210’ is a really good big bike for relatively little money; easy to handle, and a smooth runner in a wide field of application. A success, even when the frame doesn’t appear to be of high quality. Because of the size and geometry of the GT, it can be only really fast on open high speed racing-tracks. To get the fun side of this high-quality frame it perhaps would be better to choose the next smaller size. Calculating the price – our winner is definitely in this duel ‘Swoop’.
However, because of the high-quality spring elements in ‘Swoop’, there is more room for tuning possibilities. From plush-soft to sporty-tight – everything is possible. You recognise with GT that it was built for winning on modern racing tracks.

RADON BLACK SIN 8.0 ›› Test Hardtails: racing at a low price
CONCLUSION Highest quality carbon fibre frame with blockbuster features and fabulous handling: Nowhere else will you get more for € 1.999. 03/14 OPINION/POINTS very good/119,25
Radon has put every kind of high quality and expensive feature onto the cheapest of the four Black Sin models: a complete XT Group, an SID fork, lacquered in the same colour as the frame and DT-Swiss-System wheels. The bright carbon fibre frame is status quo; inside passed cables, a quick-release axle and two chainsuck sheets (always on the wickedly expensive world cup bikes). Because of the riser bar and a high spacer you are not quite so sportily seated as on a Canyon or Rose. Still, you can venture to the starting line on this lightweight 29” bike. On technical trails this Radon wins precious seconds back with its good-natured and reliable handling. Responsible for road holding is the SID-Fork. At the rear the Shadow-Plus derailleur (greater spring tensions) for fewer chain knocks and a smooth ride.

Lifestyle Âť GT40
In 1962 Ford wanted to start in international racing sport, especially as long-distance-racing was becoming more and more popular - for example Le Mans and Indianapolis. He wanted to advertise his products there. To be under the winning positions Henry Ford II wanted to buy the complete
Ferrari Company. The first negotiations with Enzo Ferrari started well. But, when ‘Il Commendatore’ explained that he wanted to lead the future sport department from FordFerrari and the name would be Ferrari-Ford, Henry Ford declined. In May 1963 Enzo Ferrari announced that Ferrari was no longer for sale.

Ford decided to build up his own ambitious sports programme and to beat Ferrari in the 24-hour race from Le Mans. For this
purpose a special development team was put together in Slough, England and, with the help from Eric Broadley (prototype
Lola with a Ford V8 engine) and John Wyer (former Aston Martin) as heads of this project. The result was the GT 40 in 1964.

Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren celebrated the long awaited victory over Ferrari. In 1967 the GT 40 got a new car body for Le Mans and started as MKIV. The last year’s victory was repeated. Subsequent versions won in 1968 and 1969. The racing cars managed a speed of 320km/h.
Production began in 1965 in Slough and nearly all models were manufactured there. But only a handful with valid MOT approval was sold. The d i sa d va n t a ges of t h e GT40 were the ventilation and the restricted view. All in all 124 cars were built, 12 prototypes and 10 MK4s. According to Ford, from 94 standard production cars, 7 became MK3s and 31 MK1s were converted for street use. The shown example’s chassis number is 1079 Le Mans 1968 Mairesse/ Beurleys.

Extra Power
FOR YOUR LEGS
Pedelec: A bike that supports your peddling with an electric motor. The engine power is adjustable in various levels; from a minute support up to a multiplication of your own pedal power. Pedelecs can speed up to 25 km/h and don’t need registration plates and that means they are tax free and free from motor insurance. So, why buy an E-Bike? This segment is one that is really popular with our customers. Apparently lots of people have found an answer to this question. We here at Radon are convinced that pedelecs are fun and with a Radon Hybrid you’ll be enjoying a permanent strong tail wind. The only thing you need is a little electricity from the socket. The maintenance costs are not higher than those of a comparable equipped trekking bike.
WHO NEEDS A PEDELEC? THREE REASONS FOR A RADON HYBRID: Practical in daily life: Hybrids are really a very good alternative to cars. Small bits of shopping are easily

done just as is the morning commutes to the office – without sweating. You can leave all rush hour traffic jams behind you and not to forget, there are thousands of free parking spaces in the city. A trend for a new attitude towards life: The wheels of the Hybrid series don’t need much electricity. Keeping your car in the garage conserves the environment by avoiding pollution.

Hybrids are quiet; even at full speed only a quiet humming of the motor is heard. You are rewarded with low-price costs for motion, valuable time in the fresh air and lots of new impressions. The ideal support for people who are not quite as strong as his/her partner, then the pedelec gives the possibility of equalization. Due to the electric motor, distance is also no problem any more; what first seemed like mountains are with a pedelec no more than hills. Radon believes in light-
weight frames with sporty geometry, powerful braking system and effective rear derailleur. There are three Radon Hybrid models in 2014. The price for the Rydon Hybrid HS11 is â‚Ź 1.799 giving you a nice smile on your face - and not just because of the tail wind.

Radon Hybrid bike offers a high E-BikePerformance. The focus attention in the development was the importance of a balanced overall concept where all individual parts unite to a harmonious unity. To reach this, countless details were filed on until all developers were completely satisfied with the result. At this point we would like to explain the technical details to you and go through the single components. The high quality and known for their reliability electric appliances for drives comes from Bosch. The essential elements of the Bosch-combination are the drive unit (motor), PowerPack (rechargeable battery) and the Intuvia control centre. The components are optimally coordinated and ensure a pure harmonious and agile drive.
PowerPack The Bosch rechargeable batteries are provided with 300 and 400 Wh. Provided on how you drive and other conditions, the packs reach a distance of around 140 km by the 300 model and around 180 km with the 400 Wh model - without having to reload your battery. The PowerPack is mounted under the luggage rack. So that it doesn’t get stolen, there is a key so that it can be locked up nice and safely. As it isn’t very heavy (2 and 2,5 kg) it’s easy to remove, just with one hand. The batteries are LithiumIons-Accumulators; neither self-discharging nor do they know memory effect. The quick charge function allows the battery to be 50 % recharged between 60 and 90 minutes. A full recharge takes maximal 2,5 – 3,5 hours. 54 | radon-bikes.com
Service Âť Radon Hybrid
Drive Unit The electric motor is a new development from Bosch for 2014. It supports the driver up to a speed of 25 km/h. There are sensors in the motor that record data about power, pedal frequency and speed - over 1000 times per second. The data is immediately processed and given to the motor control unit. The high reading frequency gives the feeling of an, at all times, optimal support. The gear change recognition of the drive unit detects switching operations and for the short time when the chain changes to the pinion, the motor power is reduced to ensure little fatigue on the chain and cassette. In comparison to last year’s model, the complete maintenance-free drive unit functions at higher revs and lower turning moment; this makes the motor much quieter, vibrations are minimized as well as less power consumption, meaning; a longer battery life.
Intuvia Intuvia is the control centre of the Bosch system and is much more than a tachometer. The pilot is informed about travel data; speed, driven kilometres and the battery level indicator over the mini computer. Furthermore, the settings of the motor’s power performance are regulated over 2 buttons. The selection covers 5 levels of support assistance; the motor can also be switched off and decoupled from pedal drive. For easier manoeuvring of the bike, there is a slide that can be activated from the control centre. Particularly smart; in the Intuvia unit you will find a USB-port where smart phones, navigation systems and other electronic gadgets can be recharged. All components of Bosch Systems work together optimally and fit perfectly in the Hybrid concept. Test out high quality Radon Hybrid models and experience the fascination of an E-Bike. THEN: Nothing stops your leisure time adventure with the Radon Hybrid bike! radon-bikes.com | 55
Service » INSURANCE
WELL INSURED IN THE NEW SEASON When spring comes, it’s not just the begin of the biking season but also the season for thieves. Protecting yourself from theft doesn’t necessarily mean paying a fortune for the correct insurance. Bikes are automatically calculated into your household insurance, where your bike is insured against the dangers of storm, hail and most important against theft. Although by burglaries, your bike is only insured when it’s in a locked up building or a locked garage and these were broken into. If you park your bike outside locked doors or your bike is in a community cellar (often in Germany) it’s possible to insure at an extra charge. The compensation is usually limited to one to two percent of your household insurance. This means that your bike is insured additionally from 6am till 10pm. After 10pm it is only insured against theft. Those who want to be really safe have to ask their insurer for a 24-hour protection. Very important; when you leave your bike, it has to be locked up – whether inside or outside. Owners of a very expensive bike can open a separate insurance
for the bike. This means that you receive a higher percentage if it gets stolen, and it covers repair costs by accidents. But beware; you could have to pay own risk excess.
How to insure Pedelecs & E-Bikes properly. Those who are interested in buying a pedelec or EBike should ask the salesman how his new vehicle is classified, from an insurance point of view. A pedelec has an electric drive support that is only demanded when peddling. Is the power not more than 250 watt, then this pedelec is a bike. These bikes switch off the support with 25 km/h. You need neither a driving license nor an insurance disc. Experts advise pedelec owners to inform themselves about damage that is covered by their private liability insurance, and if necessary, upgrade the insurance. Is the power higher than 250 watt and/or the pedal support doesn’t switch off at 25 km/h. then a registration for mopeds is needed. If such a vehicle reaches more than 45 km/h and the pedal support stays, then this pedelec is seen as a motorbike, and must be insured as one. An electric bike has an electric motor that drives the bike independently. A moped insurance is needed when the electro bike is faster than 45 km/h, as it also is seen as a motorbike. When the engine brings only a speed up to 6 km/h and then switches off, then it’s seen as a bike. A trip on an E-Bike brings a smile to your face. We’d like to invite you to try out our bikes and experience the thrill of these new models yourself. The pedelecs in Radon’s Hybrid range are not only practical in every day handling – they are the expression of a new attitude towards life. Leave you car at home and enjoy your individual tail wind. Travelling swiftly through city traffic, ascending your favourite summit with ease! The high quality Radon Hybrid range enables you the change to a pedelec for a fair price. radon-bikes.com | 57

Radon » Ladybikes
The gents have always known: To be honest, women always have the trousers on. The best is, more often biker trousers. We at Radon have accepted this fact and that’s why we’ve started dealing with women’s needs. As we started counting we were extremely surprised; across the whole product range we counted over 20 Lady-Models. The offer is varied; from hardtail up to a fully, from trekking bikes up to hybrids – there is the perfect bike for every lady here. But what are the real needs of the biker ladies and what is the difference between lady-bikes and standard models?
60 | radon-bikes.com
Ladybikes Frames
The ZR Lady Mountain bike series has a changed geometry and form of frame than the bigger brothers. There is a smaller standover height, giving the ladies a feeling of sense of security. Because of this change, the risk of injury or painful dismounting, voluntary or involuntary, is minimised. The frames of these hardtail mountain bikes are a little shorter to enable a straighter riding position. Most of the bikes; Sunset, Skill, Scart, Trekking and Hybrid also have a deeply lowered top tube; which makes a pleasant ‘getting on and off’.
Cockpit
We have built Egon grips with a broadened surface for the balls of your hands on ZR Lady Hardtail Ladybikes. These grips reduce the pressure points of the handlebars on to the palms of the hand, circulating and improving the general ergonomics of the steering. This adaptation enables a fatigue-proof riding – even longdistance. Cold hands, caused by inadequate bloodflow, are a thing of the past.
SADDLE
A further change is the surface of the saddle; because of the distinctive features of the female anatomy the special lady saddle is used.
These models are broader and offer an optimal seat for the sciatic area. The correct saddle is very important for seating comfort and for longer painless cycling. And, sitting comfortably means more fun with cycling.
radon-bikes.com | 61
CHASSIS Slide 139 29 WL is for women who like a more rough pace in mountain bike sport. This All-Mountain bike isn’t as heavy as its masculine counterpart. Bodo Probst has optimised the chassis setup for most of the lighter models in its sensitive responsive characteristics of fork and damping.
Design And of course we have Lady bikes in more colours! Men often prefer their toys in martial designs; mountain bikes for ladies are in comparison in discreet, stylish cool or more feminine colours.
62 | radon-bikes.com
Biking is an emotion; a bike is a collector’s item and an expression of individuality of the cyclist. Where emotions are, is no leeway for compromise. That’s why you should come here, feel and test the Radon Lady bikes and then tell us that we are real ‘women whisperer‘s!

The weather could have been better during our shoot. We had shot all scenes except for the summit scene for the beginning of the film. It was our last day and once again everything was encased in thick grey clouds. As we had no other choice we started out to the summit. The wind was tempestuous, the temperature icy – exactly the same as the mood of our crew. As we finally arrived at the top we noticed that there was absolutely no chance of filming our scene. We had just capitulated when the sun fought its way through the clouds. The aura we were then offered was compensation for all the preceding exertion we had gone through. I was able to capture the moments that were missing in my film.

RADON SWOOP 175 7.0 ›› ENDURO BKES IN THE € 2000 CLASS
Conclusion Test result 03/2014
The Radon Swoop is a brilliant all rounder. Its driving characteristics are appealing. The suspension is comfortable but still allows effective peddling. These balnced characteristics make this bike to our winner. Price € 2.199
ON THE TRAIL Admittedly Swoop’s colour needs getting used to but apart from that when you sit on it, you notice an immediate comfy feeling. The geometry is accommodating and at higher speeds it sticks to the trail. It has no problem tackling tight bends, although Swoop is definitely no hairpin bend artist. The chainstays stays drive neutral when ascending but still offers enough traction. Its strengths are downhill. Thanks to a 175 mm spring deflection at the rear, the Radon absorbs bumps confidently without sinking. The last one to two centimetres is pleasantly progressive which effectively prevents propagation. Still, the comfort-orientated riders are content with the good utilization of spring deflections. The fork harmonises with the rear so that we experience an utterly balanced suspension. Radon Swoop is a fabulous all rounder. The handling characteristics are pleasing, the suspension is comfortable and allows effective peddling. The well-balanced features make this our winner.
THE BIKE There have been only few changes on the frame in Swoop’s second year. Standard is now inside passed cables. The Rock Shox Reverb seat post is also equipped with inside cables. Otherwise the frames are state of the art and have everything that is necessary and up-to-date. A 170 mm spring deflection with Rock Shox Lyric Fork and 175 mm at the rear, it’s quite difficult to believe that we are talking about a versatile enduro bike, but it has everything that is needed. A 2x10-drive, based on a near to complete SLX operational group, the corresponding Race Face Chester Crank with a bashguard, and a switchable chain guide. Its weight adds up to 14,82 kilos, compared to its competitors, it’s acceptable. Through the usage of Formula brakes, Shimano shifters and the Rock Shox Vario post the remote lever pulls quite far inwards and is less ergonomic. radon-bikes.com | 87

to catch and share the most exciting moments of life. How it all began: The history from GoPro Cameras started 12 years ago. At that time 26, Nick Woodman gave himself a deadline. If he didn’t manage to invent something until his 30 th birthday – then he would go and get a proper job. On a 5-month surf trip through Australia and Indonesia the idea came to him. It must be possible to develop a small, sturdy, waterproof mini camera. It was his aim not to have to choose between being a surfer or a photographer. Woodman wanted to be both – at the same time. First of all he built a case for a one-way camera; one that you could
wear on your wrist. He held it at chest height so he could film himself and his friends from his surfboard. In 2004 he sold his first camera system; a 35 mm film version that was to be further developed – rapidly. The digital successor with new adapters and attachment possibilities spread, not only across the surfer scene but also to animal photographers, adventurers and extreme athletes; they loved this gadget. Suddenly everyone could be an action star in his own video clips. In the era of Youtube and Facebook boom, it was the perfect product at the right moment. A new product category has been created – from the
simple idea of wanting to film himself when surfing. Today, GoPro offers many more other perspectives; whether as a daddy-cam filming the children, playing or in the park with the cam on the dog’s collar – with this small camera you experience an insight into a totally new world. Meanwhile, GoPro has worldwide more than 700 employees. The current model, HERO3+ as well as numerous accessories are sold in over 12,000 stores in 14 European countries. The white edition offers, as well as the foresaid videos, up to a 180p resolution and 30 pictures per second – even photos with up to 5 megapixel as well as treble photo series and intervals from 2 pictures per second. The silver edition tops this with a clearer lens and a faster chip bringing videos in Full HD resolution and up to 60 pictures per second – with 720 p up to 120 pictures per second. This enables even hobby photographers to take crystal clear slow motion films, easily. In the silver edition, the pictures are up to 11 megapixel and

The top-model, the black edition has an even better lens and an even faster chip; here the pictures go far further than Full HD resolution up to cinema resolution 4k. The SuperView mode offers a larger detail of photograph up to 12 megapixel; continuous shooting up to 30 pictures per second. Additionally, WiFi remote control is supplied that can control up to 50 GoPro simultaneously.
accessories endless The accessories with which all models are compatible, among other things are, a holder, an LCD touch BacPac (in case you don’t have your smart phone to hand to look at your photos per app), or the battery BacPac which doubles battery-life. It is possible to process and distribute your pictures with the free GoPro Studio 2.0. You can create breathtaking clips – thanks to the various templates that come from favourite GoPro videos. The vivacious music, the effects and edit points have already been programmed; meaning that you can put your videos in professional GoPro format – as easy as pie.

Lighter Sram-X0-Drive, steadfast X0-four pistonbrakes, brilliant Suspension fork (pike with lowering function, expensive E*Thirteen-wheels, top Vario-Saddlepost. How this possible for only 3000 euros? Only Radon knows. Anyway, the customer is happy; this 26” fully is just less than 13 kilos; logical that it brings much fun uphill. The smaller lighter wheels accelerate like no other. The efficient drive neutral rear spurs on. The high-built front and the relaxed seating position spoil climbing elan and slow down speed devils a little. On trail, a little more pressure on the front wheel wouldn’t do much harm eitherbut still, Slide bustles around the bends that it’s a pleasure to watch. On the whole a little smoother running although its kinematics, together with the congenial Pike fork stand out from the crowd; not always sensitive, but always active, consistently perfect, defined in spring deflection, standing never sinking – great!

You could say that the change of technical regulations this year in Formula 1 is near to a revolution. The biggest change is the engine. This season, the naturally aspirated engine – first with 3,5 cylinder, later with 3,0 litre, since 2006 8 cylinder and 2,4 litre – has changed to a 1,5 litre cylinder turbo engine with cylinder and maximal 15,000 rpm. There was a so-called KERS, hybrid system before, but its performance was limited to 82 HP and 6 seconds per round. The new energy recovery engines get their energy from, as before, the braking energy, but also from the turbocharger accruing thermic energy. Both systems together are a blockbuster for Formula 1. The 102 | radon-bikes.com
ERS-system and 200 HP open for 33 seconds per round. That is the tenfold of the KERS energy. Not only by the turbo engine’s so called ‘hole’ (the time between hitting the acceleration and the performance) is compensated, but it also generates a higher torque. To limit the engine power, the amount of petrol has now been limited to 100 kg (40 litres per race). Other limitations: per season only 5 drive-units (motor and ERS-System) can be used. The singular components can be changed among each other, which makes it difficult to control. But, all in all, the required running life of the engines has now expanded to 4000 kilometres. Even rules have been made about the weight of the whole drive train, which is now
145 kilos. Further massive changes; the exhaust pipe can only be placed centrally above the gearbox. This prohibits that in the last years used ‘blown diffuser’ effect in the exhaust pipewas responsible for a significant part of the contact pressure at the rear. A narrow front wing and a trimmed tailpiece end up the most important alterations that all lead up to the fact that the impact of the aerodynamic is reduced and a new Formula 1 becomes, once again, an engine Formula 1; making it less a power formula and more an efficiency formula. With this, the elite motor sport follows the trend of the automotive industry using less fuel to reach better performance which also makes it much more interesting
New technical Revolution in Formular 1
for technologically interested automobile manufacturers. The consequence being: As well as Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault, Honda also starts in 2015 in the Formula 1. The new machines should all have approximately 750 HP similar to the previous aspirated engines. Its sound is deeper and less aggressive. There was apprehension that the new motors wouldn’t sound Formula 1 suitable – this is not the case

Many experts believe that Formula 1 racing will become much more of a strategy game – a game the pilots will have to get used to. They must be extremely aware of fuel consumption; they will have to plan the application of the two hybrid systems and at the same radon-bikes.com | 103

CONCLUSION
Edition 05/14 EXCELLENT
Slide Carbon 160 is Radon’s mastermind, Bodo Probst’s newest creation. With ultra light carbon fibre frames (less than 2500g) will capture all enduro fans, but won’t discourage all-mountainbikers. The reason for this is the sensational light whole weight from 13 kilos. No wonder that distributor, Radon, has put only the finest parts on to this bike. For € 3.599 you have: Fox-Factory-Spring element, Shimano-XT-parts and light DT-SwissWheels. But, do dream parts and dream weight make a dream bike? It is really no surprise that Bodo Probst has succeeded in a near to perfect geometry. The balanced seat/stand position fits immediately. Playfully, this agile Slide bike allows itself, via a broad cockpit, to be directed across trails. The drive-neutral chainstays and the ascetic weight deliver top propulsion and thanks to the steep seating angle, it climbs and clambers like a chamois. On the other hand, in downhill it gleams a perfect mixture of smooth running and agility.
It sprints light-footedly uphill and playfully confident downhill, excellently equipped – Slide is the outstanding all-rounder in test, offers a feather-light, high end frame. The chassis impresses; filtering heavy as well as light knocks, building enough reserve for tricky conditions.
And: whether long mountain tours, relaxed trail surfing or tough enduro action the large bandwidth of Slide is exceptionally impressive. Manoeuvrable

It vibrates on the tongue, floating across the palate leaving Endorphines dancing samba: Fresh, fruity, silky and extremely elegant. A perfect rosé whose charm is irresistible.
It is not without reason that Roberto Anselmi, from Veneto,in Italy is named the ´Lord of Soave´. He awards it a polish like no other and has announced war to bad quality Soaves. And has triumphed – what in the face of the liquid gem‚ Canole’ is quite apparent. It isn’t possible to get more grace, elegance and sophistication in one glass; the good-winesyndrome enters immediately. After the firrst glass you can’t resist the second.

Radon Âť EBE-RACING Team
EBE-Racing Cross Country is the mother of all disciplines in mountainbike competitions. So it‘s not surprising that cross country competitions find the most attention from the media.
All the more, we are delighted that we have, with the Elisabeth Brandau energie Racing team, aka EBE-Racing Team, yet again, another partner for our working relationship in cross country area. As well as the founder, Elisabeth Brandau; Martin Gluth is also starting for the EBE Racing Team. Brandau possesses a long list of successes; she is not only multple German marathon champion, but two-times German vice champion in XCO (cross country) and Cyclo-Cross and German XCE (Cross Country Eliminator) champion.

Team The national cyclist, Gluth, was able to win national league competitions. Further, he managed top placings in world championship races. The objective of the two top athletes is the participation in the world championships- the national championships and in intermediate terms the qualification for the olympic games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. ,A motivating objective‘, says Brandau, ,As it is – when all is said and done – every sportsman‘s dream.‘ Both are on the go with Black Sin in 10.0; a bike which offers the best basics for such ambitions of the two athletes. Brandau,‘ It is a very agile bike, ideally equipped for demanding XCO/XCE courses. Due to its smoothness of its 29“ wheels, it‘s the perfect partner for marathon.‘ As well as the optimal support from top athletes, the EBE Racing Team is also recognised for its strong promotion of young cyclists. Brandau follows the concept of giving young sportsmen and women a chance and letting them profit from the experience of top performers. We wish the EBE Racing team all the best; a successful season – as we say in cross country jargon: Chain on the right and strong legs!

RADON SLIDE 160 10.0 ›› The 6 hottest bikes 2014
CONCLUSION Issue 10/13 OUTSTANDING
The Slide series, created by Radon‘s-Mastermind Bodo Probst, is a great hit in Bonn‘s forwarder company. Particularly in the all-mountain segment the Slide 140/150 glides and rides into the hearts of customers and testers. The next step for 2014 has aready been ignited; Probst places the allrounder with a fashionable 27,5“ wheel, gives it more spring deflection and packs everything together in a super lightweight (2520g) adequately stiff carbon frame. Radon plays all the trump cards of a direct shipping company; the features (on the testbike not built in) have the most expensive Fox spring element, Sram.XO-drive as well as XO-Trail brakes and light and stable wheels - not really inventive but this can hardly be topped. The reward? 12,4 kilo weight is for a 160mm Fully with all the trimmings - a smacker! No wonder that, according to Radon, the Slide 160 is especially recommended for Enduro racing.
124 | radon-bikes.com
What should be praised on the Slide 160 ? The light carbon frame or the noble parts? The well-balanced handling, the precise framework? Or perhaps everything? Exactly! This is a top notch Enduro!
True? And how! Once in the saddle, things really take off; the Slide accelerates brilliantly, every pedal turn is a whip, the drive neutral chainstays don‘t dare to twitch. But; even when races are won uphill, the conventional Enduro driver wants to let things go - downhill. And this is where the limitations of personal driving skills are set - and not by Radon The efficiently tuned four pivot suspension system doesn‘t act exuberently senstively– it nearto ignores unevenness, and even by high drops doesn‘t slump down. In combination with the optimal cockpit, the steady brakes as well as the grippy tyres - hardly anything can go wrong downhill, particularly as the fantasticly balanced handling between manoeuvrablity and precise tracking radiates trust and reliability in this bike. However, Slide 160 is not a fully fledged free rider, but as a exceptional all-rounder - from demanding Alp cross up to Enduro races.
