Sweet History

The Celina Main Street and Historic Downtown Square has seen people from many eras due to the many thriving businesses which have called the square home. Two businesses, in particular, were drug stores. One of those buildings, at the corner of Pecan and Ohio, is still a sweet and nostalgic fixture in Downtown Celina, although it has been empty for quite some time. But that is about to change. Through the years, there have been many owners and as it seems the importance of maintaining the original sentiment and purpose has been passed down through generations. •

Celina Drug in the early 1900's (photo courtesy of Reminiscences of Celina)

Jim Drake and his wife Maxie Lewis Drake (sister of Mrs. George Jenkins) first owned one of the first drug

stores and made it one of Celina’s first Post Offices.

In 1909 Dr. Jenkins became co-owner with Dr. R.L. Clayton. • •

In 1910 Mr. Willis and Mr. John Stallcup were co-owners.

In 1917 Roland Willis and Fred Boyer bought the store and named it Willis

and Boyer. They also owned the ice cream factory and made ice cream for the soda fountain. Mr. Roland sold his share to Mr. Boyer who owned it until he too, retired.

Mr. Roland sold the property to Charlie Frank Choate in the 1920’s. Mr.

Choate was the sole owner until he sold to Vic Arrington in 1945. Mr. Arrington closed this particular store permanently in the 1950’s.

OurCelina.com | July 2019

Mr. Charlie Jackson opened the store that is still a permanent fixture here

in Celina’s Historic Square. Mr. Jackson continued to work there until he sold to

a Mr. Wesley Young. During these times, the store maintained a very lucrative soda business, sometimes •

even selling up to 50 gallons of ice cream on any given Saturday of the month.

In 1917 Mr. Bob Jones and Joe Dyer purchased the stores to operate as a chain called Dyer and Jones.

Mr. Jones became the sole owner when his co-owner died in a tragic car accident. The name then became Jones Pharmacy.

Mr. Earl Tillerson, who was an employee who came to work at the drug store after serving in World War II,

bought an interest in the store upon the death of Mr. Jones. Tillerson, ran the business until 1967 once it was purchased by Bary Davenport.

In 1970 Rex and Fran Mask then bought the pharmacy and changed the name to Celina Drug. Rex talks about his days as owner with great pride and enthusiasm. “We sure had a good time” he says of the mem-

ories made there, adding that “we wouldn’t trade those days and or the experiences for anything.” Mask sold Celina Drug in the mid 2000’s.

In 2007, Jai Harris-Ellis came on board and in 2017 she purchased Celina Drug.. Today, Harris-Ellis can still be found behind the counter of Celina Drug, which operates just a mile north off Preston Road. But the original building that holds so much history is a beloved part of the square. What’s coming will be something that preserves the sweet history and celebrates what once was. The old days of soda fountains, ice cream and sweet treats that filled the pharmacy so long ago will carry on in the same location they once did. That’s right, a new little place called “Hey Sugar” will soon serve up more delectable goodness than can be imagined.

Hey Sugar will have a large selection of glass bottle sodas available.

With the success that has been seen with their four other locations including Roanoke, Waco, Decatur and College Station, you’ll be glad to know that as of this summer you won’t have to travel outside of the Celina Square to enjoy a sweet experience, to the likes of Candy Land or Willy Wonka. Not only do they make and sell specialty candy, ice cream, retro sodas, popcorn and chocolate, Hey Sugar can create custom gift baskets for any occasion!

Keeping with the tradition of community and gatherings, Hey Sugar will also have a party room, for birthdays and other gatherings as well as a porch and outdoor sitting area to enjoy the multitude of treats to choose from. Reminiscing about days gone by while enjoying the simple pleasures that remind us of the goodness of tradition, that’s what you’ll find at Hey Sugar!! We will look forward to seeing you there!

Hey Sugar signage brings the past and present together

Celina Family Dentistry is known for providing the highest quality dental care, while also providing the highest level of ethical standards. By utilizing advanced dental technology while executing conservative techniques, the staff provides individualized dental care with the utmost consideration of the welfare and best interest of each of their patients. Their dedicated doctor and staff treat each and every patient as their top priority, while striving to improve oral and overall health through comprehensive, preventative and educational resources. Dr. Ganjoor, also, fondly known to her patients as “Dr. G” graduated with honors from Texas A&M Dental School in Dallas, Texas. She takes great pride in keeping up with the latest dental practices as well as the most modern dental technology, by taking multiple hours of continuing education classes each year. At Celina Family Dentistry, they strive to provide dental care to as many patients as possible while never losing sight of the personal touch their patients have grown to know and love. It was a lack of personalized care and a negative experience her first time in a dentist’s office, at a young age that led Dr. Ganjoor on the path to dental school. At 9 years old her parents took her to the dentist because she had a crooked front tooth. Instead of offering orthodontic treatment to align the crooked tooth, the dentist recommended an extraction. Ganjoor says, “Her parents did not know any better and like so many other people, just trusted a professional's opinion. A perfectly healthy and cavity free tooth was pulled without another tooth to replace it for many years. Because it was one of her permanent teeth, she was very self conscious about her smile, especially through her teenage years. “I wanted to provide my patients with proper recommendations regarding their dental care” says, Ganjoor. When she went to dental school she was able to get orthodontic treatment by way of a dental implant to replace her missing tooth that enhanced her now perfectly, beautiful, smile. It was this personal dental tribulation that created a passion in her to help others have great dental experiences and smiles that not only increase patient confidence; but work to enhance their over-all quality of life. Dr. Ganjoor makes her home, here in Celina with her husband, their son and 3 dogs. She and her staff have grown close to her patients and their families. She is very proud to say that Celina Family Dentistry is a place where patients become a part of their extended family. By staying true to The Golden Rule, the staff members are friendly, knowledgeable and more than happy to accommodate their patients. Dr. Ganjoor says, “the goal is to treat each patient exactly how they, themselves would like to be treated” and that motto is the key to success in her growing business. The experts at Celina Family Dentistry specialize in all aspects of dental care including but not limited to: Bi-Annual Dental Cleaning Gentle Extractions Wisdom Teeth Extractions Teeth Replacement Fillings, Crowns and Bridges Implant Placements

Golden Oldies In Celina, we are well-known for our production of amazing athletes. You need only look as far as the trophy cases at Celina High School to see that we are not short on accomplishments in any sport in which we participate. One group that has made its way into headlines recently is the Celina Senior Center’s Golden Oldies Chair Volleyball team. Yes! You read that right, there’s a group of seniors that meet weekly a the Celina Senior Center to perfect their game. Sher-Den Home Health in Sherman, Texas sponsors 8 local chair volleyball teams including the Celina’s Golden Oldies. Last month the team’s practice paid off as they brought home the Grand Championship trophy, awarded at Sher-Den's first ever Chair Volleyball Tournament, which was held in Sherman. Susan Vincent, LBSW, Community Liaison for Sher-Den Home Health said the team, which was formed in February 2018, named themselves the Golden Oldies. The goal of the program is ultimately to increase dexterity, and maintain keen hand-eye coordination, but the Golden Oldies find it to be a lot of fun. Freda Thomason is one of the original members of the Golden Oldies and she says, "We take it very serious, but we gain a lot of friendships also." The most "seasoned" member out of all eight teams is Celina's John Rothfus. Rothfus served in World War II and at a very young 94 years of age he has a mean spike and doesn't take it easy on the younger players. Members of the City of Sherman Parks and Recreation Specialist Staff served as the officials of the tournament. Other teams represented included The Aces, Rusty Buckets, The Blue and The Orange Bouncers. "It felt awesome to win," said Jackie Turner. "Afterwards, we went to Hucks to celebrate." Although all teams were talented, none could hold their own against our Golden Oldies. Sherman came close as the Golden Oldies found themselves 8 points down in the championship game, but came back to take it all! Vincent, says that with the success and feedback from the players, they’re planning to make the chair volleyball tournament an annual wellness event.

Celina American Legion Post 145 Sends Three to Boys State By: Gage Gibbs

Imagine this…You gather over 1,100 America-loving teenage boys, who happen to be aspiring politicians, into the heart of Texas, and give them the goal of creating a fictional, functioning, political society. Every year, The American Legion holds a program called Texas Boys State at the University of Texas in Austin. This program is a week-long leadership experience educating young men on the ins and outs of Texas politics. With adequate funding, each American Legion post selects 2-3 students to participate in this definitive learning experience. The Legion post chooses a school, and a school administrator selects a group of students that he or she feels is deserving of this great honor and accomplishment. The Legion post then sends a few of the Legion members to interview these students and choose those who will attend Boys State. The young men who these Legionnaires select will then make the trip down to Austin to participate in one of the most prestigious programs in the country. With the help of the Celina High Post 145, I, along with two of Reed, had the opportunity to atWe made the trip down to Ausready for a week we’d never forhis political party and city asthe Federalists and the Nationto participate by running for varwithin the parties.

School Staff and American Legion my peers, Bryson Brown and Matt tend Texas Boys State this summer. tin during the second week in June, get! Upon arrival, each boy is given signment. The Political Parties are alists. All students are encouraged ious local, county, and state offices

The first night of Boys State is whenever the first city meeting is conducted, this is where you elect all of your city officials. I decided to make a run for Mayor of my assigned city, Birkhead City. After a quick tally of the votes, I won! The mayor of each city has the privilege of escorting the visiting dignitaries around the campus of UT Austin. The visiting dignitaries I had the honor of accompanying were people such as, State Representative Vikki Goodwin, Texas Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick, and Judge Bert Richardson of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. I had the privilege of interviewing these men and women, and figuring out what life is like in a position of power. I also held the position of state Federalist Party Campaign Manager. This means that I was in charge of writing speeches, making campaign paraphernalia, and many more things to ensure that the candidates of my party were elected. I was successful in getting a federalist elected to the Lt. Governor and Attorney General positions. Something that the young men who attend Texas Boys State get to participate in is a parade from the UT campus to the State Capitol. Once we all arrived at the Capitol building, we had the opportunity to visit our senators’ and representatives’ offices. As soon as I entered the Capitol I made a bee-line for the Governor’s office. We spotted him in the corridor just outside of his office. I also visited the offices of Senators Angela Paxton and Pat Fallon. I will never forget that Capitol visit. Perhaps the offices I held and the Capitol parade weren’t the best parts of Boys State, I met people that will remain life-long friends. I also found a love for this program, My hope is to attend Texas Boys State next year as a counselor. I am so thankful for American Legion Post 145 of Celina for giving me the opportunity of attending such an amazing program.

Milena Carlson:

Overcoming MALS Imagine being unable to eat without excruciating pain. Imagine being unable to figure out why and having medical professionals question your suffering after being misdiagnosed and tested over and over. This was the life of recent Celina High School graduate Milena Carlson for the last year. Milena, who was very active in CHS theatre, missed the last four months of school battling a rare condition called MALS, which is an acronym for Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome. It is believed that between 10% and 20% of the population has the anatomical variation but only 1% develop MALS. MALS tends to occur in a younger population, and is more common among women. Rapid weight loss or illness appears to be a trigger. MALS is usually only diagnosed after all the “normal” causes are ruled out. MALS is essentially a ligament coming off the spine that cuts off the blood flow of the celiac artery, causing severe nerve damage. These nerves are the ones working when eating, drinking or exercising, therefore the root cause of her pain. Because this is a rare diagnosis, there are few doctors who specialize in MALS so Milena flew to Connecticut in May. Richard C. Hsu, MD, PhD, FACS, RPVI is a vascular surgeon in Connecticut who has a 92% success rate in treating MALS patients. In surgery, they cut the ligament over the artery and remove all the damaged nerves. After a five day stay in the hospital, she had to remain in Connecticut for three weeks to recover enough to travel back to Celina. Full recovery from surgery will take approximately 4-6 months, however. Milena’s recovery is a bit more difficult because in addition to MALS, she also has a number of additional autoimmune and/or hereditary issues such as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS), Gastroparesis and Scoliosis. In addition to the vascular physicians, Milena must see an endocrinologist, chiropractor and physical therapist to keep everything in check. But she has learned that meditation and a holistic approach is helping her deal with some of the side effects. Milena’s sister, Annika, also suffers from MALS, though she has not had to have the surgery yet. Milena will be attending Texas A&M - Commerce in the fall to hopefully study nursing and be able to help others dealing with this disease.
