at both Tom Bean High School and Bowie High School. The Gunter Tigers have come a long way since their founding in 1978, and have had the benefit of quality coaches and dedicated players to set the tone for the years to come.
In 1997, Coach Kevin Worthy took over the program as head America’s favorite pastime, for baseball coach and won a State the small town of Gunter in the Championship in 1998. Gunter one of the most successful and noticeable high school baseball programs in North Texas, with two state championships and multiple District titles. Baseball is, what some might argue, what put Gunter, TX, on the map as an athletic powerhouse in state of Texas.
Here is a bit of pre-1978 Gunter Baseball history:
Head Coach Russell Hunter started the baseball program in 1978, with the added weight of coaching three others sports: an assistant for football, head boy’s basketball, and head girl’s basketball. After Coach Russell, and top player Derek Byrd, had led the team to its first State Tournament appearance, Russell retired in 1985, and Scott Wortham stepped up to the plate to take over as the boy’s head baseball coach. He was followed by Kevin Darwin, who led the Tigers to the State Tournament appearance, with dominant players: Kevin Powers, Kevin Bounds, Tommy
Kerry Clement is currently in his seventh year as the head coach in Gunter, but has been an assistant coach here since 1998 under both Coach Kevin Worthy and Coach Todd Hogan. Before coming to Gunter, Clement had been a head coach for 12 years 10

Prosper team, when all together, compose a team scarcely second to any in the country and rarely ever return from a contest on the diamond save as victors. “Uncle Mack Smith,” one of the most enthusiastic fans Prosper affords, has agreed to accompany the boys on the trip today, and guide aright their footsteps. 1920’s Marion Reed played in the outfield with his Uncle Jessie and Uncle Lee. July 11, 1920 One of the best baseball games played on the Gunter diamond this season was the one between Whitewright and Gunter… The game was a tight one from start to finish and one extra inning had to be played to untie the score of 1 to 1 at the end of the ninth inning. In the first half of the tenth, White-
wright scored one man. Gunter then tied the score in her half by a home run, following which they filled the bases and the winning score was brought in on balls, ending the game 3 to 2 in Gunter’s favor. The feature of the game was a home run in the first inning. The first man to bat met the first ball thrown by the Whitewright pitcher and put it over the right field fence. Whitewright scored in the second inning… outplayed Gunter, but luck was favoring Gunter. Whitewright got ten hits while Gunter only got four, and the Whitewright pitcher made eleven men lay down the bat, while Gunter fanned ten. Eddie Fogle brought in the first score for Whitewright with a two-base hit, and Whitewright’s second run was made on a two base hit by Lester larae. “Chick” Garland made several fancy catches in centerfield… six outs to
his credit. May 17, 1921 John Reed leases a part of his land, (north and slightly west of today’s Dollar General location), for $50 per year, 3 years to the GUNTER BALL CLUB of GUNTER, to be used as a ballpark. Three acres of land. The Gunter Ball Team will erect a proper fence and grandstand for the spectators. April 18, 1922 GUNTER GIVES THE RED SOX HARD BATTLE - The Sherman Red Sox won 8 to 5 in their exhibition game with Gunter at Gunter Monday afternoon. A fair-sized crowd were accorded a good exhibition, with enough hitting to make an interesting game.
J. T. Lewis, Sherman shortstop, may be out of the game several days as a result of being hit on the right arm, below the elbow, with a pitched ball. The area was X-rayed Tuesday morning to determine…a fracture. Sherman evened the hits with Gunter at nine each. These included home runs… off (Gunter) pitcher Reed. Rodgers and Heath of Gunter poled home runs. Batteries: Reed and Heath for Gunter, Crowe and Williamson for Sherman… Pendleton umpired.
