Gunter Spotlight: 2020-2021 Gunter Tiger Band Leadership By: Hailey Wilde

The new 2020-2021 school year is almost here and with that, comes new leaders! Even though this year may look and feel different than others, I know that these powerful leaders will make a long lasting impact on the Gunter Tiger Band involving both its people, and success. Congratulations to you all, and good luck! Grace King - Assistant Drum Major Grace King will be entering the 2020-2021 school year as both a junior, and an Assistant Drum Major! When asked why she wanted to fulfill this major role in the Band, Grace stated, “I wanted to give back to the band. Band has always been a place where I feel safe, so I wanted to give everyone the same experience.” Grace is most looking forward to seeing the Band grow, and meeting the new incoming freshman and transfers. Her favorite memory from Band was, “playing how to train your dragons for the last time in 2019, with some of the best people.” Gray McDowell - Assistant Drum Major Gray McDowell will be entering the 2020-2021 school year as both a junior, and an Assistant Drum Major! When asked why he wanted to fulfill this major role in the Band, Gray stated, “I knew I wanted to be an Assistant Drum Major the second positions were announced. I wanted to have that role to help out the Band as much as possible.” Gray is most looking forward to working with the rest of the leadership team, and seeing what all they can accomplish! His favorite memory from Band was, “having fun with my friends at football games.” Erin Seiberling - Woodwind Caption Head Erin Seiberling will be entering the 2020-2021 school year as both a junior, and the Woodwind Caption Head! When asked why she wanted to fulfill this important role in the Band, Erin stated, “I’ve always enjoyed being a part of the Band. When I tried out to be Woodwind Caption Head, my intent was to become more involved in the Band, and be able to lead and help others.” Erin is most looking forward to leading her section and helping create great memories with the whole Band. Her favorite memory from Band was, “The 2019 football game against Canadian. I remember screaming and playing my instrument at the top of my lungs with the excitement of the football team going to state.” Erin is super excited to be in this position, and can’t wait for what’s to come with this upcoming school year! Penn Seiberling - Brass Caption Head Penn Seiberling will be entering the 2020-2021 school year as both a senior, and the Brass Caption Head! When asked why he wanted to fulfill this major role in the Band, Penn stated, “In the band, leadership has a pretty important role. When the leadership tryouts were announced, I figured I should try to be a part of that. Specifically brass caption head, because I know the brass section well, and it seemed like fun.” Penn is most looking forward to elevating and focusing on the brass section as a whole! His favorite memory from Band was, “when we marched on the cowboys stadium field for the first time.” Jake Schafer - Percussion Caption Head Jake Schafer will be entering the 2020-2021 school year as both a junior, and the Percussion Caption Head! When asked why he wanted to fulfill this important role in the Band, Jake stated, “I have loved band and percussion since 6th grade when I started, and I have always wanted to have a leadership role within the Band.” Jake is most looking forward to getting to teach kids percussion and help out his section! His favorite memory from Band was, “when we came in 10th place at Aubrey my freshman year.” Jake can’t wait to see what the Band can accomplish together this season, even though it will be a little different than normal! Aidan McDowell - Loading Crew Captain Aidan McDowell will be entering the 2020-2021 school year as both a senior, and the Loading Crew Captain! When asked why he wanted to fulfill this major role in the Band, Aidan stated, “I wanted to become the Loading Crew Captain because I wanted to help the band in any way possible.” Aidan is most looking forward to helping the band and becoming a better leader! His favorite memory from Band was, “being with my band mates during every practice and Friday night.”

City

Connection The future of the city of Gunter is very bright! After a little more than six weeks as Gunter’s City Manager, I have learned a lot about Gunter. The most important thing I have learned is that you care about Gunter and are very proud of the great schools and the small-town culture. You are also very concerned about not losing what makes Gunter special in the face of inevitable growth. I am blessed to have the privilege to be your city manager. I can assure you that I will manage the city in a manner consistent with the direction of the Mayor and City Council and the city’s vision and mission statements that read: Vision Gunter is a unique community exemplified by a commitment to the preservation of its history, a high quality of life, a vibrant business community, and environmental sensitivity. We are a city steeped in a rich historical past through which we have emerged as a vital, community committed to excellence, innovation, and sound fiscal policies. Our neighborhoods are safe, healthy, and as unique as the individuals who inhabit them. Mission We believe the City’s greatest asset is our people and we welcome the involvement of all those who live and work in the City of Gunter to partner with us in making this community one of excellence. We are committed to preserving the unique character, historical and rural fabric, and environmental beauty that defines Gunter to its residents. We will accomplish this through the Values of Service, Fiscally Responsible Municipal Services, Integrity, Positive Solutions, and Cooperation. These vision and mission statements have substance and were carefully crafted to embody the spirit and heart of the citizens of Gunter. They will be the basis for us moving forward and provide direction for our city government. A solid foundation is in place, a clear direction has been charted and it is my job to build upon the past successes. I will work with the Mayor, City Council, and Citizens, collaboratively and positively, moving forward. Here are a few of my core beliefs that guide how I will manage while following the policy guidance of the Mayor and City Council: 1. I believe it is important to listen to and stay in touch with you while being sensitive and responsible to your needs. I won’t be able to do everything everyone asks, but I can assure you that I will listen to your concerns and do the best I can to mitigate them. 2. I believe that employees of the city are one of its most important resources. Our employees embody the “servant leadership” philosophy. They are here because they choose to be here, doing their part to make the city of Gunter the best it can be. They appreciate the opportunity to be something larger than themselves. Working for the city is not just a job; it is almost a “calling.” 3. Concerning public resources, I have an ethical obligation to work in the most efficient and effective manner possible. I will facilitate processes that allow your voices to be heard and build Gunter in a manner consistent with community values. 4. I believe that organization development, and being proactive will provide a bright future for the city of Gunter. The foundation has been laid and now we must plan for the inevitable growth that is headed this way. We will utilize proactive planning and determine the kind of city we want to be in the future. We will embrace our community culture to ensure that it continues to thrive regardless of the future growth that will occur. 5. I believe in positive community engagement, communication, and civil dialogue. As Thomas Jefferson said, “Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppression of the body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day.” I hope you trust our city government and know that we are working every day to earn your trust. We will operate with integrity, openness, and honesty. We will make mistakes, but they will be just that, mistakes. As we move forward to our bright future, we must be able to have civil dialogue and discourse. We must be able to have honest and open conversation without personal judgments. We must seek to understand and have empathy for opposing views on issues. We must be united on the vision and open to debating the strategies and tactics in a civil and professional manner. I am excited to be here in Gunter at this crucial time in its history. It is an enormous opportunity and responsibility which I do not take lightly. I look forward to getting to know everyone and working together toward our common vision.
