Gunter High School Class of 2020 Spotlight on Top 6
By: Hailey Wilde
As this crazy school year comes to an end, I can only imagine that our seniors are more ready than ever to start the next chapter of their lives. With this in mind, I decided to interview the top six seniors to map out their plans, desires, and feelings involving leaving their family and hometown for college. Congratulations to you six, and the entire graduating class of 2020!
Where will you be attending college? Kara Curtis: I was chosen as a Eugene McDermott Scholar, so I was given a full ride to the University of Texas at Dallas, which is where I will be headed in the fall. Jacquelyn Galvan: I am excited to say I will be attending Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. Keely Ward: I will be attending Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Laurel Mulkey: I will be attending Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. David Denton: I will be attending Abilene Christian University. Ainslee Stovall: I will be attending Texas Tech University. What is your intended major and career plan? Kara Curtis: Get my bachelors in International Political Economy and then go on to law school. My ultimate goal is to work in international corporate law and work immigration cases pro bono on the side. Jacquelyn Galvan: I intend to enter the nursing program at Texas A&M and graduate with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing, specializing in neonatology. After gaining enough years of experience in my area of specialization, I wish to apply to a graduate program to pursue a career as a neonatal nurse practitioner. My goal is to help the youngest of patients and give them a voice in the health community. Keely Ward: I plan to graduate with a major in biology, then apply to a medical school where I will pursue a career in pediatric oncology. Laurel Mulkey: I intend to major in psychology, with a minor in either business or communication studies. My hope is to open my own practice as a clinical psychologist, focused on aiding in the betterment of mental health for adolescents on the autism spectrum. David Denton: I plan on majoring in biology to become a doctor. Ainslee Stovall: I will be a pre-nursing major, and plan on graduating with my BSN in order to work as either a Pediatric ER or Critical Care Nurse. After I earn enough years of job experience, I aspire to return to school for my MSN and become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Are you excited or nervous to go to college and start living on your own? Kara Curtis: I was pretty nervous but the Coronacation has helped me realize that it is definitely time for me to start living on my own. Jacquelyn Galvan: I admit that I am nervous to go to college because I’ve always been close to home and because I am sad to leave my family and friends, but I am really looking forward to this new experience, becoming an independent person, and seeing what the future holds. Keely Ward: I am very excited to be leaving for college, because it is going to be a new experience. I know I will get homesick, but in the end I will be making new memories with the people I meet at school. Laurel Mulkey: While I am a bit nervous to be on my own for the first time, I am excited for all the new people I will meet and the opportunities I will have in college. David Denton: I am excited for new people and experiences in college but I will miss my friends at home. Ainslee Stovall: While I am nervous to leave my family and friends and enter the “real world,” I am super excited to see what experiences are in store for my future. What are you most looking forward to about college? Kara Curtis: The opportunity to have life changing new experiences! Be it studying abroad or doing an internship, I am excited to explore everything the world has to offer. Jacquelyn Galvan: I am most looking forward to meeting new people and becoming part of a new community! I plan on joining different organizations and clubs to be involved with my new community and make new friendships. I am also looking forward to the fact that going to college will be bringing me one step closer to achieving my personal and occupational goals. Keely Ward: I am most looking forward to meeting new people and expanding my knowledge in a field of study I am passionate about. I will get to experience new things with people who will help me on my journey and allow me to excel further in order to succeed. I am so excited for this new chapter in my life, and for how it will change me for the better. Laurel Mulkey: I am looking forward to dorm life, and the chance to interact with my new community. I plan on joining several clubs and applying for internships while in college, and hopefully each will allow me to meet new and amazing people. David Denton: At college I am looking forward to a change in scenery. I am excited to make new friends and go on new adventures. I am looking forward to new experiences and a new chapter in my life. Ainslee Stovall: I’m looking forward to branching out and meeting lots of new people! I plan on joining different clubs and organizations in order to get involved at Tech. I’m also eager for the fact that college will also allow me to begin achieving my personal goals.

What are you going to miss about Gunter? Kara Curtis: The people. Since I moved here in 8th grade, this community (and in particular GISD) has felt like family. I am really going to miss my friends. We are a pretty tight knit group and I am going to miss having people who know me better than I know myself, and that are always there to lend me a helping hand or offer sage advice. Jacquelyn Galvan: I am truly going to miss my friends the most. My friends have been with me through some of the most important moments in my life and I’ve shared many memorable moments with them. While I’m sad that we have to go separate ways, I know it is so we can each achieve our dreams. I will also greatly miss the community of Gunter, which has always been like a second family to me. I could not have asked for a better group of friends to take this crazy ride called high school with or community to have been a part of. Keely Ward: I am going to miss the close-knit community that was so prominent in Gunter. Des Moines, Iowa is a much bigger city, so I know that it won’t be the same as living in a small town. I will miss the people who have made impacts on my life and I am forever grateful for how their presence has changed me into the person I am today, because I am so much stronger now thanks to them. Laurel Mulkey: I am admittedly not very good at letting people go, so I know I am going to miss my friends most of all. While my friend group has grown over the years, I have known most of my best friends since elementary, and I cannot imagine what it will be like to go to school everyday without them being there. Yet, I am comforted by the fact we are all moving away to grow and become the best versions of ourselves we can be! David Denton: I am going to miss a lot of things about Gunter. Since I have gone here since kindergarten, I have known most of the kids in my class all of my life. We have played little league sports together, spent time at the lake, and tons of other things over the years. While leaving home is inevitable I will definitely miss my friends and the fun times we had at school. Ainslee Stovall: I’m going to miss the feeling of family that is associated with a small town. You can never meet a stranger in Gunter, and there’s always a helping hand when you need it. I’ll always cherish the amazing memories Gunter has granted me, and I’m proud to call it my hometown. How do you feel Gunter ISD has prepared you for college? Kara Curtis: Not only did Gunter ISD prepare me academically for college, it also helped me realize the things I love in an institute of higher education. Thanks to them, I am motivated to go somewhere where I can continue to have meaningful connections with teachers, be involved in community service, and continue to improve upon myself as a community member, student, and person. Jacquelyn Galvan: I can say Gunter ISD has prepared me academically for college, but it has also prepared me in many other ways. One of them is how to be part of something bigger, whether it be a school, community, or organization, and how I can play a part in that. Much change has also come to Gunter ISD and with it I have learned how to accept and embrace change. Gunter ISD has also helped me become who I am today through the opportunities it has provided me and helped me discover who it is I want to be. Keely Ward: While Gunter ISD is more sheltered compared to other large school environments, it has taught me the importance of creating those close-knit groups with your classmates, and how through those groups you can depend on one another for school work or maybe problems outside of school. This, to me, is very important for preparing a student for college, because without this knowledge of the significance of depending on your classmates, more and more students would struggle in a college environment. Laurel Mulkey: Since kindergarten, Gunter ISD has been my home, and they have taught me a lot about myself. I have learned how much I value my relationship with my teachers, as well as the people around me. I have learned it is okay to rely on others when I need them, and that there is a lot more for me to learn beyond the lesson plan. David Denton: I feel like going to gunter has prepared me for college in lots of ways. It has taught me how to be a hard worker and shown me what it takes to be successful. I have created many great relationships with my teachers and coaches that I can always come back to if I need help. Ainslee Stovall: Gunter ISD has allowed me to discover who I am as an individual. I’ve grown in character due to the abundance of leadership and community service opportunities offered. The teachers are also genuinely invested in the lives of every student, not just academically, but personally as well. As a result, I’ve learned important life lessons that will carry me towards success as I enter college.
