BARRY DUPERON

Artist, Barry Duperon’s work exhibits the subject matter of urban culture through the observation of everyday life. Visually his work showcases the tribal mask of different meanings from different regions of Africa with a fusion of “African American” influence. Each piece has a story behind it and gives a visualdocumentation on what’s being highlighted. 20 /

“The Day After The 4th” is based on the imagery of a young black man being harassed by over aggressive police officers. The title is loosely based on the police shooting of Alton Sterling which took place on July 5th, 2016. The symbolism is reflected on the significance of the 4th of July which is supposed to represent freedom. Amongst the quote of “all men are created equal”, the brutality of some police shows that America may feel otherwise.

“Pray for us “ reflects on the effects of gentrification that is quickly taking over the lower income communities. All across America communities feel the drastic change of how houses and apartment housing are being demolished, and destroyed so that companies can build high rises and lifts with substantially expensive rent that many of the families that lived in the area for years cannot afford. frankb.bigcartel.com @barryduperon

LIFE IN A WALK A Film by Yogi Roth & Will Roth

Life In A Walk” follows Yogi and his father, Will, on their trek along the Camino De Santiago, a famous pilgrimage through Portugal and Spain, where Yogi listens to, learns from and discovers more about his hero than he ever imagined. The concept of the film came to Yogi as he realized that he never had dealt with the emotions stemming from his father’s battle with prostate cancer. In a single moment, Yogi decided that he never wanted to say, “I wish I’d spent more time with my dad.” He immediately flew home and invited his father on a journey that would change both of their lives forever. Through “Life In A Walk,” Yogi hopes to inspire viewers to spend time with the people they care about while challenging them to break away from the daily rigors of life and technology to simply go for a walk with the ones they love. “It’s never been about sharing my father’s story, let alone my story,” says Yogi. “It’s always been about “Life In A Walk” getting the viewer to stop, pause, and look at their life, their story. And if needed, make the shift to spend time with the ones they love before it’s too late.” lifeinawalk.com @LifeInAWalk

Yogi Roth is a Filmmaker, Scholar, New York Times BestSelling Author, accomplished Coach, popular Sports Analyst and World-Traveler. Through his production company – Life Without Limits – Yogi strives to make movies that highlight great stories and provoke audiences to give back to their community through the power of human connection, exploration and discovery.

DERRICK

BROWN The Final Collection of Photographs 28 /

DERRICK BROWN errick Cameron Brown was born and raised in the South Bronx of New York City. In the late 1970’s his adventurous spirit brought him to the West Coast in search of new-found creative inspiration.

In addition to his photography, over the years, Brown was known for playing jazz music in many local venues, his passion for personal fitness training and his zest for life that provided inspiration to all who crossed paths with him.

Upon first sight of the California coastline, Derrick had a passion for photographing its natural beauty and for over 30 years, Derrick captured its amazing landscapes along with various other awe-inspiring subjects. Due to Brown’s keen understanding of light, mood, depth, balance and shape, his photographs are often compared to paintings. Through his camera lens, Derrick was able to freeze moments in time, evoking emotions and memories with each photograph.

From beautiful greeting cards and matted photos to largescale canvas prints, Derrick’s legacy continues to lives on. Derrick is survived by his daughter Maresa, grandson Mateo and countless close friends who will forever hold his memory dear to their hearts.

In 2015, Brown self-published his first photography book entitled “Welcome to the Monterey Peninsula.” The popularity of his work which includes the Big Sur Coast series, Carmel-by-the-Sea and images of Yosemite have reached national as well as global recognition.

EDUCATION

LEARN FROM THE MOMENTS What Is The Everyday Creative?

The Everyday Creative launched in the summer of 2018 because Sydia Bell needed a place to present the intentional decisions she made to live authentically. She wanted to organize the meaningful crafts for kids, purpose filled daily rituals and renovating her live/work space on a budget, she also wanted to learn more about the defining success, value of education, and self-care through real life experiences. The Everyday Creative is the place for Sydia to introduce some of the creatives who have supported and inspired her throughout her journey by living their dreams everyday and where readers can find tangible, practical and resourceful information on how to cultivate an authentic space where their learned skills and natural interests sustain their everyday lives.

FATHERMEN: ART-ETHNOGRAPHY EXHIBITION A collaboration between Stella Phipps, a Glasgow-based artist/ illustrator and Adom Philogene Heron, an anthropology Ph.D. student at St Andrews. The exhibition offered an intimate inter-cultural conversation on the presences and absences of the father figure – in Dominica, West Indies (Adom’s ancestral island and fieldsite) and Scotland (Stella’s homeland; where both collaborators reside). » fathermen.blogspot.co.uk 66 /

MEMORY DRAWING I by Stella Phipps. Pen & ink on paper. March 2015 This is from a series of drawings based on distant memories of my early childhood with my British father and Grandfathers. Here, I am sitting with my Dad by the river Monnow, Herefordshire in summertime. Fragmented and expressive, these drawings show everyday journeys, routines and special occasions. They aim to celebrate paternal presence and proximity.

MEMORY DRAWING II by Stella Phipps. Pen & ink on paper. March 2015 Here is another distant memory of my Dad at Arthur’s Seat - a great rock that overlooks Edinburgh - with me in the baby-carrier. As a young child, I often remember hill walking as a kind of pilgrimage where we had to reach the top and my Dad was the hero-figure!

ROASTING AGOUTI IN DADDDY’S YARD by Adom Philogene Heron. Loubiere, Dominica. 2014. ”Everybody have something helping out de scene, nuh! Yesterday when you come dere, I was cooking, remember? So we don’t leave all for one person to do. Just because she is de wife, she have everything to do?! ... No! You have to do somefing too! You can help out, you know, everybody know what to do. And the young ones coming, will learn!”

Scratchie tells me. He is roasting an agouti that his boss shot and brought for him, whilst his daughter watches on and clambers down the falaise trying to get involved. He does most of the yard work – including house repairs and outdoor food preparation (e.g. cleaning fish or roasting agouti); whilst his wife, Cyrilla and teenage stepdaughter do most of the housework and cooking. Yet, as he notes they often share jobs and there is a fluid division of labour in the house and yard, as is common across Dominica.

“SCIENTIST” AND THE TWINS by Adom Philogene Heron. Loubiere, Dominica. 2013 Cleve “Scientist” LeBlanc lives alone in the basement of a rotting wooden house built by his late grandfather. He shifts between occupations – his garden, working on barges at a nearby quarry, the ocossaional cunstruction job – “taking life one day at a time” as his personal refrain goes, guayaying (“scraping”) from one day to the next to make ends meet. However, a few years ago his life changed when he fell in love with a white lady from Canada whose father owns a business on the island. Yet shortly after their twin daughters were born the relationship went sour and they parted ways. Cleve felt embittered by her swiftly moving on. Cleve, now dutifully takes care of his daughters several days a week, though he bemoans that the mother drops them at her convenience, and he is frustrated by his inability to provide for them. “It doesn’t mean just because I don’t have, I don’t want to maintain for the family I being around, I’m not working, I just took to the kids, you know”. fathermen.blogspot.com 70 /

CAPSULE

A JOURNEY – CREATING TIME CAPSULE

Each year, brings a new set of memories to cherish. Parents age, children grow up and move away, and new memories slowly erase the old ones. Curator of 4FATHERS Journal, Marlon Cole has taken on the challenge to create a time capsule for his son. Follow along on his journey as he collects items to include in his yearly time capsule. SOCIAL #IAM4FATHERS | @4FATHERSJournal

/ 71

HOW TO MAKE A YEARLY TIME CAPSULE? A yearly time capsule is a great way to celebrate and reflect on the little details that make each year special. Create a yearly time capsule that will include letters, drawings, photos and video/audio recordings. TIME CAPSULE IDEAS You can choose what to include in your time capsule – memories of the present day. Here are a few ideas: 1. Create a time-capsule list and include, today’s date, your name, favorite things, hobbies etc. 2. Include today’s newspaper. 3. Take some photos of your bedroom, kitchen or art studio. 4. Write a letter to your children. MAKING YOUR TIME CAPSULE After you’ve combined all you want to include, it’s time to assemble your container. Include all your chosen time capsule valuables, and seal your box. And finally you will label box with your name(s), and date when box can be opened. Now hide it away, and try not to open it until the chosen date/year! 72 /
