2019-2020 4-H Canada Annual Report
Inclusion 4-H in Canada is open to all without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age, or mental or physical disability. We are dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive environment that allows for universal access and participation.

T N E M E V O M H 4
The 2019-2020 fiscal year has been one of hard work, unification, and evolution for the 4-H movement in Canada. From members and alumni to volunteer leaders and professional staff to donors and partners, the 4-H community has worked together toward positive evolution over the past year, with collective results and achievements that we should all be very proud of. As shown in the subsequent pages of this Report, tremendous advancements have been made toward the goals set within our four strategic priority areas. One of particular note is under the Leadership Excellence Strategic Priority. The safety and well-being of youth is paramount, and through a collaborative journey, we have committed ourselves to advancing 4-H as a leader in the youth-serving sector by meeting or exceeding the industry standards expected of every volunteer and leader across the country. This has been achieved through the development and implementation of cohesive national standards and policies in risk management and youth safety training. This work, made possible only through our collaborative relationship with the 4-H provincial organizations, has been one component of a larger initiative to strengthen the structure of 4-H in Canada. Over the past year, we have made significant progress toward an accreditation-based relationship between 4-H Canada and the 4-H provincial organizations. This change is set to come into effect in 2021, following multi-year consultations with our provincial partners, and scans of the youth industry. The goal of this initiative is to determine the best model for achieving a cohesive and unified 4-H program, complete with rigorous standards and policies consistent across each organization. This incredible undertaking is driven by a common belief that the safety and well-being of youth is our greatest shared priority. Our organization and movement are stronger than ever, due to our evolution over the past year, which has led to greater levels of engagement with our public and private partners.
Valerie Stone Chair, 4-H Canada Board of Directors
Stefanie Nagelschmitz Chair, Canadian 4-H Foundation
Shannon Benner Chief Executive Officer, 4-H Canada
This was evident in the levels of partner participation in our youth and leadership conferences, as well as in their support of our third annual Leadership Awards, held in February 2020 in Ottawa, ON. These partners and donors are essential to our mission of empowering youth to effect positive change in the world around them. Our youth membership base held steady over the past year, with more than 23,400 4-H’ers across the country. It was exciting to see 53 new clubs start up, and nearly 1,000 new volunteer leaders join the 4-H movement in Canada. And there are many more positive numbers to be found on these pages. To give just one example, our internal program feedback process showed youth reporting that their participation in 4-H Canada programs led to asset and strength development outcomes up to and including 100% in multiple areas. And let’s not underestimate the power of our inclusion of youth voices at the table to ensure that we are hearing about what resonates with 4-H youth across the country, and are able to apply a youth perspective to the work we do. While we faced adversity at the end of the fiscal year due to COVID-19 - making a unified 4-H movement all the more important - we have been able to adjust and adapt very rapidly, as have our provincial 4-H partners. In responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, 4-H in Canada remains dedicated to working collaboratively to continue nurturing responsible, caring and contributing youth leaders. In fact, youth in rural areas are more at risk and need engagement, and 4-H has been one of the few organizations that have continued to work with youth during COVID-19. Looking ahead, the 2020-2021 fiscal year will be one of continued growth, as we develop a new Strategic Plan, and continue to champion volunteer capacity building, provide bestin-class governance training for our provincial colleagues, and implement the new provincial accreditation membership model. And, as parents and youth navigate what this new school year looks like for their families in the reality of COVID-19, 4-H will continue to provide resources for at-home exploring that instill youth with the leadership skills, confidence and resiliency to tackle any challenges they face. Thank you to all 4-H stakeholders, partners, and participants for their incredible work, day-in and day-out, and also for their tremendous response in the face of a global pandemic. It is through the passion and partnership of the 4-H community that the past year has been a success, and we look forward to seeing what our continued solution-focused, collaborative efforts can achieve in the year ahead. 2019-2020 4-H Canada Annual Report
