Local Skip hire specialist adds a JCB Loadall to its fleet

County Antrim-based skip hire specialist CM Skips has added a JCB 550-80 Wastemaster Loadall to the fleet of materials handling machinery operating at its site in Randalstown, near Ballymena.

The telehandler, supplied by JCB dealer, Dennison JCB, will play a key role in ensuring CM Skips’ on-site efficiency and throughput targets are met. It will be used to transfer incoming commercial and household waste from tipped skips to a dedicated sortation area where material is sorted into different recyclable waste streams and non-recyclable waste. The 550-80 then collects sorted material and delivers it to one of a number of dedicated storage bays at the site where waste is kept prior to being loaded – again using the 550-80 - onto one of CM Skips’ contractor partner’s delivery vehicles before being taken away for recycling. On average, CM Skips recycles 90 per cent of all the waste that arrives at its Randalstown site and the company’s contractors recycle at least 80 per cent of all material that leaves the site. The JCB 550-80 is powered by JCB’s new EcoMAX engine to deliver optimum power and productivity, while the machine’s Wastemaster specification means that it is fitted with extra guarding and protection as well as uprated hydraulics – a factor that had a significant influence on CM Skips’ purchase decision. CM Skips’ director, Nigel McKee, said: ““The day-to-day efficiency of our site relies to a great extent on the performance of our handling machinery, so we need equipment that operates at full capacity even in the most arduous conditions. Machines in the JCB Wastemaster range are specifically tailored to meet the demands of tough

waste and recycling centre environments, which means their uptime is optimised.” The 550-80 Loadall benefits from a number of advanced features designed to ensure that the telehandler’s operator is comfortable – and, therefore, productive – throughout even the longest and most demanding shifts. For example, thanks to the 550-80’s cleverly packaged driveline and sloping bonnet, visibility is excellent, while, the operator cab itself is one of the largest around, boasting the lowest noise levels; excellent air flow, ventilation and demisting; optional air conditioning; fully adjustable steering column and an optional suspension seat.

25th anniversary GLOBEWEIGH CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF PROVIDING WEIGHING SOLUTIONS

The GlobeWeigh Group has manufactured, installed and maintained weighbridges across the island of Ireland since 1995, and this year celebrates a quarter of a century in business.

Its continuing growth and success stems from a blend of local knowledge and expertise, combined with strong working partnerships with world leading manufacturers. Over the years, the company has established a strong presence throughout Ireland in the weighbridge market by offering innovative solutions, quality products and competitive pricing, backed up by comprehensive service and support. Today, as the sole distributor for Europe’s leading manufacturer Weightron-Bilanciai, the company, with facilities in Armagh, Cork and Kildare, is one of Ireland’s leading suppliers, with over 600 weighbridges sold to date throughout the country.

GlobeWeigh offer three types of weighbridges - the CSPM, the SBPMC and the Eurodeck. All are manufactured to the highest standard at its modern fabrication plant in County Armagh, using stainless steel European load cells, and all are supplied and fitted with a weighing indicator suited to customers’ specific needs, an optional printer and a relevant software system. So, let’s take a closer look at the range.

CSPM

The CSPM surface mounted weighbridge features a simplified robust buffering system which uses special ‘v’ blocks to buffer the deck against transverse and longitudinal movement. This design eliminates the need for conventional tie bars. Surface mounted weighbridges are robust weighbridges and suitable for multiple environments including farms, quarries, and recycling centres. The CSPM is a cost effective concrete weighbridge which is cast on site, the design minimises transport costs and eliminates the need for heavy lifting of equipment on site. With a concrete weighbridge cast on site, you can achieve a high-quality weighbridge at a much lower cost. The CSPM weighbridge is ideal for such applications and includes various design features to reduce dirt build-up: • Load cells are positioned away from the ends of the weighbridge. • High rise design providing additional clearance under the weighbridge. • Simplified foundations leading to easy installation.

SBPMC

The SBP/MC weighbridge is available in surface or pit mounted versions. Each standard 15m weighbridge has three sets of inspection plates (end/middle/end). These plates are used to access the pit for cleaning and maintenance of load cells. Whether installed in a pit or above ground the SBP-MC is easy to install and has the following features: • Standard 15m x 3m comes in 2 pieces for easy lifting into position • With GlobeWeigh’s foundation drawings and back up support you will have full support if required. • Once the frame is on-site, 2 sheets of steel mesh are set in it and then the concrete is poured leaving the install straight forward and easy. • Only 500mm deep pit is required for a pit mounted bridge. • No crane required to set up load cells once concrete has settled. • GlobeWeigh has a dedicated

Verification and Calibration vehicle and team.

EURODECK

The EuroDeck is a dynamic concept in weighbridge design. Based on tried and tested ‘Orthotropic Technology’ which is utilised in thousands of road and rail bridges worldwide, the fully welded steel structure offers exceptional strength and durability and is available in both pit and surface mounted versions, and provides a very cost-effective solution for a wide range of applications. Weighbridge lengths can vary from 7-18 meters, with capacities up to 100 tonnes (std 60 tonne). Features include: • Low cost life time cost due to the design and installation of the Eurodeck. • The standard Eurodeck has 6 load cells with a panel above each load cell for easy access. • The Eurodeck come with

IP68 rated Stainless Steel loadcells for optimum life. • Due to the placing of the panels, under the weighbridge is easily cleaned out and load cells can be easily accessed.

WEIGHBRIDGE SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS

GlobeWeigh offer a range of software that has been designed to be an extremely cost-effective, flexible solution for a broad range of industries. From a PC based system with an operator to a touchscreen driver operated system, GlobeWeigh can provide a system that enables you to carry out a variety of industry-specific tasks depending on the modules supplied. It can be used in a variety of industries including quarries, recycling and waste management, animal feed mills, renewable energy, mining, timber production, food manufacturing, general manufacturing, grain storage, and farming. It has the capability to manage the following tasks: • Record all incoming load and outgoing loads • Produce a comprehensive weighbridge docket containing details of customer, product, vehicle, CE Marking etc. • Record similar transactions which are not weighing but are measured in units of quantity and volume • Generate a range of management reports for business analysis • Amend and reprint old dockets quickly and easily • Integrate with accounts packages such as Sage with invoicing and pricing This system can be extended to integrate with driver-operated touch screen panels, card readers, ANPR systems and traffic control devices.

COMPREHENSIVE SERVICE & SUPPORT

Globeweigh also offers a comprehensive service, calibration and support capability for a wide range of industrial weighing equipment throughout Ireland. The company supports its own and other manufacturers’ weighing equipment - and packages can be tailored to meet customers’ specific operational and fiscal requirements. Service is available from the company’s centres in Armagh, Kildare and Cork, with 24 hour cover also available for companies operating around the clock and at weekends.

Hire Constructing a Career Path to Stem the Skills Gap

country are doing degrees at their chosen university, while many of those taking up apprenticeships are experiencing work life for the first time, however in an age of diversity, is the fear of manual labour putting young people off careers in hire and construction?

The variety of jobs available and the lure of working on some of the nation’s major infrastructure projects – at any one time half the equipment on a building site is probably hired in – should make a career in the industry an attractive proposition, yet the recruitment and retention of the millennials, especially females, is a challenge, according to trade organisation Hire Association Europe (HAE). As the construction industry has lagged behind the diversity curve and has, in the past, had a reputation of being ‘middle-aged male dominated’ – it is estimated that eight percent of current construction employees are over 60 – however, misconceptions about gender specific roles are gradually diminishing and the number of women as new entrants from higher education has been steadily increasing. It is recognised that the hire industry needs to do more to sell itself while all students are still at school and reach out to the entire cross-section of society. HAE sees STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) as a basis for developing skills using the latest computer and online technology such as virtual reality for training in equipment and tools. HAE commercial manager, Paul Gaze, said: “Hire is very much a sector that absolutely embraces STEM. We’ve created a career and hire strategy where all young people can progress, do a degree while gaining loads of work

experience and have skills that are transferable, but won’t incur the debt that they have when going straight to university.” All businesses understand the need and benefits of having a workforce that reflects society. Attracting more women into the hire sector is vital – currently around 13% of people working in construction are female – as is retaining their skills, especially if the flow of workers from the European Union dries up due to Brexit. As part of the drive to create greater diversity in the workforce, HAE is also committed to engaging with policies such as tackling young people Not in Employment Education or Training (NEET) by promoting ‘attractive jobs elements’ in partnership with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), Schools and Colleges. Creating a sustainable skills

Students up and down the

base through apprenticeships, vocational training and academic options will contribute to the UK’s major construction projects of the future, from civil engineering such as tunnel building and town centre rejuvenation, to keeping drinking water supplies, water treatment works, pumping stations and underground service reservoirs all functioning. Paul Gaze explained: “We must encourage more young people into the industry, especially women. An emphasis on apprenticeships and tailored training are the way forward. Not everyone is going to be interested in brick laying or plumbing but someone may be fascinated by electrics or engineering. People can still go to university but by then they could have spent many years in the hire industry building up their skills and knowledge.” Young people often overlook the fact that careers in hire and construction are incredibly diverse with advanced technology. STEM activities can lay the foundations for filling vital jobs that include everything from architects and virtual construction managers to engineers and contractors
