CONSTRUCTION ACCOLADES AT ANNUAL BUILDING AWARDS
CITB NI hosted another successful Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Lecture and Awards evening at Nutts Corner Training Centre acknowledging local students in their professional exams in 2019.
The lecture was presented by Graham Construction focused on the delivery and construction of The Grand Central Hotel. Success was the theme of the evening as certificates were awarded to 25 candidates who successfully passed their CIOB examinations last year through QTAS and Training LMS training organisations. Andrew Hatton who trained through LMS was presented with the Best Overall Performance Award for his results in the CMP programme in 2019. Barry Neilson, Chief Executive CITB NI presented the students with their certificates said, “CITB NI are proud to host these annual awards in partnership with CIOB. Congratulations to all who achieved recognition in their professional exams, not only have they have invested in themselves, they have also invested in their companies and the local construction industry. “As an Industrial Training Board CITB NI are focused on driving investment in skills and training, we work with contractors, professional and trade bodies to support training initiatives and skills development for the overall benefit of the industry.” Awards also went to the best full-time final year Ulster University Student BSc (Hons) Construction Engineering & Management, Scott Glenn, while best part time student was Ryan Shaw. As part of the ceremony, certificates were awarded to those who gained top grades in GCSE Construction and Built Environment in 2019. All students achieved awards from Ballymena Academy with Matthew Orr gaining 1st place, Tim Bailie, 2nd and Richard Carson, 3rd. Barry Neilson continued, “We are delighted to also present awards to those young people who have excelled at GCSE in Construction and Built Environment. We congratulate them for undertaking the subject and acknowledge their success. “Construction is a rewarding industry with a variety of opportunities on offer from project management to onsite roles with prospects for career enhancement and good earning potential. The popularity of the subject is growing and over 7000 pupils have undertaken the exam over the past decade. We provide help and guidance on the GCSE Construction topic via our textbook and we support local schools by providing 25 complimentary books to each school annually. We hope that by studying and excelling at this level students may possibly consider a career in a dynamic industry with lots of opportunities to choose from.”
Construction Industry Training Board NI (CITB NI) has launched its annual SkillBuild NI competition search for the top local construction apprentices from across Northern Ireland.
Each year SkillBuild NI brings together the top and brightest talent in a bid to win in categories ranging from brickwork to wall and floor tiling. It also helps to shine a light on the enormous talent, professionalism and brightest recruits that exists across the industry. The Skillbuild NI competition is designed to test skills, technique and ability within tight timeframes in order to win coveted titles in 10 different trade areas. It is a great opportunity to showcase and celebrate the high level of skills and the impressive talent within the workforce. It reflects the high standards of training in our local training network and the commitment to excellence demonstrated by the competitors. Skillbuild NI is about raising the status and standards of professional and technical education and training. CITB NI will host Skillbuild NI National Finals 2020 on Tuesday 19 May 2020 at their Training Centre at Nutts Corner. Winners will have the opportunity to represent Northern Ireland in the Skillbuild UK or Skill M&E UK National Finals and potentially the UK at WorldSkills. SkillBuild NI 2020 was launched during a series of NI wide events during the inaugural NI Apprenticeship week. CITB NI’s involvement throughout the week provided the opportunity to showcase their commitment to encouraging skills and training for those employed or intending to be employed within the construction industry in NI as well as signpost employers to the range of support available to placing apprentices. Barry Neilson, Chief Executive, CITB NI said: “The construction industry needs apprentices to help the industry develop and grow. Offering young people apprenticeships gives businesses the chance to play an active role in moulding their future workforce and creating the future skills that they need to help their businesses develop. We are proud to have been involved in construction skills competitions for over 40 years and we have a record of success at skills competitions not only on a local level but also on a regional, national and world level. “It is an exciting time for apprenticeships in the construction industry and CITB NI is committed to continuing with providing the industry with all the necessary development, training and support.”
