Dear Readers,

We typically reserve this page to showcase the latest Western North Carolina housing market statistics. While we love our numbers, this holiday issue is dedicated to something far greater. This season, we celebrate the remarkable strength and resilience of our mountain communities.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, people in our communities rolled up their sleeves to help one another. Countless acts of kindness flooded our news feeds. There was rail side relief at the Depot. In our Out & About section, we share stories of our team members volunteering with the Cajun Navy 2016, the American Red Cross, and loading up U-Hauls to deliver supplies and grill burgers for communities hit hardest by flood waters. We love this video from Nate the Farmer at Darnell Farms, in which he demonstrates just how much people in this region care. And we continue to stand in solidarity with Asheville, taking in the scene of the Candlelight Vigil recently held at Pack Square Park.

Out & About in WNC

Our agents have been out & about! From helping build communities up through service to celebrating with clients, below are a few fun highlights to share from our “Company News Feed.”

Welcome Courtney Dills!

As a lifelong resident of North Carolina, I have extensive knowledge of the area and the unique challenges faced when living “in the mountains.” Prior to Real Estate, I have experience in all areas of construction, including site prep and septic installation.

An avid outdoorsman, sharing the beauty of the area has always been a passion. Being a mother and grandmother myself, I’m family driven and would love to show future residents the wonderful opportunities that life in the Smokies has to offer.

Q&A with Courtney

Q: We admire your involvement in local community organizations. Are there any special outreach opportunities or recovery efforts in the Bryson City area that you would like to highlight?

The effects of Helene will be seen far into the future. The immensity of this catastrophe brought to light the heart of our fellow Americans and the tenacity of the Appalachian people.

In the immediate wake of this disaster, I was terrified to know that my children were in Greene County, TN. They took quite a bit of damage. Their grandmother lost her house along with a lifetime's worth of pictures and keepsakes. My emotions were quite mixed when I learned that my 22-year-old daughter had joined search and rescue efforts in Erwin,

TN, but her decision solidified my own.  I was privileged to work alongside some members of the Cajun Navy 2016 and a fantastic group of folks that came from Davie County North Carolina and volunteered their equipment, resources, and time to come help strangers. Seeing people meet their neighbors for the first time, after they "lived up the creek" from one another for over a decade. Meeting people who had very few resources themselves, that brought everything they had, to give to someone who had nothing. The men that drove across the country because someone shared a prayer request at church in Oregon. The local woman who lost the entirety of her new business, cleaned out the muck, closed the doors and has invested everything she has left in personally helping individual families. I could go on because I'm a gatherer of stories. It has been a very humbling experience to say the least.

The land and the people here are forever changed. I would say what's really highlighted though, is that humanity has hope. There are good people everywhere and the times that are the darkest bring out the most light.

Q: You were born and raised in North Carolina— what unique qualities of this region do you think make it extra special?

A: Growing up in Western North Carolina afforded me the opportunity to really connect with nature. As a child, being indoors was considered a punishment and shoes were only worn regularly when school was in session. I still loathe wearing them. Summers were spent on the riverbanks fishing, swimming and camping with the extended family, as well as working in my grandfather’s extensive garden. I feel

uniquely privileged that I have such an “old school” upbring. Integrity and hard work are simply a way of life.

Being raised with my brother and male cousins, I was regularly the only girl in the bunch and had no option but to keep up. Whatever the boys were doing, I wanted to do it better. Due to this, I have worked in every aspect of construction. From operating heavy equipment clearing house sites to putting the finishing trim on the inside, I have firsthand knowledge, resources and contacts to assist in every step of the process of home building as well as handyman services for already constructed homes. And I know all the cool hiding spots!

Q: If someone had one weekend to spend in Western North Carolina, what are your top three recommendations for exploring the area?

A: If I were coming to Western North Carolina for only one weekend, I would start a day drive by visiting Judaculla Rock in Cullowhee NC. Covered in 1,500-year-old petroglyphs, this ancient soapstone contains more petroglyphs than any other known boulder east of the Mississippi and was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. From there, I would follow 107 S to Cashiers for lunch at the Cashiers Valley Smokehouse because who doesn’t love a good brisket! Leaving from Cashiers on 64 W leads to several of the area’s most beautiful waterfalls, including Dry Falls where you can walk behind the waterfall for a very different perspective. Most Saturday nights, one can easily find live music at many of the breweries around the area. My personal favorite is Native Brews Tap and Grill in Cherokee, NC and I’m looking forward to the Bryson City location opening soon!

Q: What’s your go-to activity when you’re not working?

A: When I’m not working, I’m outdoors. From hiking the many trails around to simply swinging in a hammock on a riverbank, I can think of nothing better than enjoying the beauty that epitomizes this area.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote or source of inspiration?

A: I have two mottos that I strive to live by: “If you are going to do something, DO IT RIGHT.”

“Every day is a holiday, and every meal is a feast.”

The first is from my dad who passed away when I was eight. He always stressed the importance of putting your best effort into any undertaking and seeking knowledge in the event you don’t know what you’re doing.

The second is from my Pop. I am so fortunate that my stepdad is one in a billion. He has been through many physical hardships including a broken back and yet he maintains the best attitude. My Pop exemplifies gratitude and determination. This saying and his tenacity has pulled me through some of my hardest times and weakest moments.

At the end of the day, I’m grateful to all those that have helped push me on my way, particularly "The Great Oak Tree."

Celebrating the Sukkot

Eyes on the Summit

I recently joined an all-girls hike to Little Sam Knob, a beautiful peak in the Pisgah National Forest, part of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. The trail, about 4.5 miles round trip, offered a moderate challenge as we made our way through lush forests, open meadows, and rocky outcrops. As we hiked, we shared laughter, stories, and encouragement, which made the journey even more enjoyable.

Reaching the summit at 5,862 feet was the highlight, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, vibrant with hints of fall colors. Standing there, soaking in the breathtaking scenery, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment, blooming friendships, and a renewed appreciation for nature’s wonders. It was a day filled with inspiration and the joy of exploring such a stunning landscape together.

We loved Jay’s post on National Daughters Day so much that we had to share it here! As we enter this season of gratitude, it doesn’t get any better than this!

House Hunting Adventure!

Last month, I was contacted by a couple searching for a fixer upper project right here in Bryson City. Their backstory is so awesome! For the last decade, they have been traveling the world on their sailboat, Atticus, and now they are ready to come back to the states and put down roots. While they are looking in several areas, I have the privilege of being part of their house hunting adventure here and they are filming it for their YouTube channel. I can honestly say this is the first time I've worn a mic and been filmed doing my job, talk about being a little nervous! LOL

We received approval from the listing agents/sellers for us to film while visiting properties. We had three similar, yet very different properties to see - each had multiple homes on the property and a descent amount of land. Each one was a different level of "fixer upper" as well. Jordan and Desiree are such a great couple, very easy to talk with, down to earth and their little girl Isabella is as precious as they come! And we can't forget their pup, Oso! Here's a link for their house hunting adventure in GA recently: "Should We Buy This Abandoned Cabin? | S10E02"

When they post our episode, I'll be sure to share! I can't wait to see where they end up (hopefully in Bryson City) and what they do with the property they choose. These two are definitely living life to the fullest, with lots of adventures! I'm glad I could play a role in it!”

Resilience in the Wake of Hurricane Helene: Asheville’s Biltmore Estate and Montford Historic District

Rebound with Hope

From the B&B Consulting Blog

In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s relentless winds and rain, Asheville, North Carolina, has emerged with a spirit of resilience. Known for its blend of natural beauty and historical landmarks, Asheville faced the storm’s impact head-on, and the community’s swift response has already set the city on a promising path to recovery. Two of Asheville’s beloved landmarks—the Biltmore Estate and the Montford Historic District—are central to this story, representing Asheville’s commitment to preserving its rich history while moving forward.

Biltmore Estate: Standing Strong Through the Storm

The Biltmore Estate, Asheville’s crown jewel, stands as a testament to resilience. With its historic mansion, Conservatory, Winery, and famous Gardens, the estate’s grandeur faced an unprecedented challenge in Hurricane Helene. Fortunately, the estate’s main structures emerged largely intact, though fallen trees and scattered debris impacted the Main Entrance in Historic Biltmore Village. Crews quickly worked to clear the area, prioritizing visitor safety and restoring the estate’s welcoming charm.

The estate’s annual Christmas at Biltmore celebration, beginning November 2, is a beloved tradition that now holds even greater significance, symbolizing Asheville’s commitment to continuity. Fortunately, the estate’s vineyards escaped damage, and the grape harvest successfully concluded, ensuring Biltmore’s wines will be enjoyed during the holiday season. This year’s festivities carry a deeper meaning, as they signal Asheville’s enduring spirit in the face of adversity.

Biltmore’s Commitment to Regional Recovery

Beyond its own recovery, the Biltmore Estate has extended a hand to the broader Western North Carolina community. On October 7, the Vanderbilt family, stewards of the estate for generations, launched the Biltmore Relief Fund, pledging $2 million to support recovery efforts. This fund helps employees in need, local non-profits, and the long-term recovery of Asheville. Notable organizations receiving aid include Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels of Asheville.

In addition to financial contributions, Biltmore has supplied food, potable water, and cold-weather supplies, alongside temporary canopies for FEMA sites. The estate also provides preservation assistance to The Cathedral of All Souls, a historic site in Biltmore Village. This initiative strengthens Biltmore’s connection to Asheville and its people in times of need.

Montford Historic District:

Preserving Asheville’s Architectural Heritage

The Montford Historic District, renowned for its architectural heritage and historic homes, also faced the storm’s wrath.

Hurricane Helene damaged some of Montford’s historic structures, toppling trees and littering streets with debris. Swift recovery efforts by city crews, volunteers, and preservation organizations have helped restore the area.

Efforts are underway to repair damaged structures and protect Montford’s character. Local organizations emphasize the importance of preserving the district’s architectural history, ensuring that Montford’s historic homes continue to tell Asheville’s story for generations. These efforts showcase Asheville’s dedication to blending historical preservation with progress.

Community Spirit and Solidarity

In Asheville, community bonds have shone brightly in the wake of Hurricane Helene. First responders, utility workers, and volunteers have rallied, providing essential support. Residents have shared countless stories of courage and kindness throughout this experience, strengthening the unity within Asheville.

Organizations like MANNA FoodBank and the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina have provided food, shelter, and financial support to those most affected. The contributions of these organizations, alongside individual acts of generosity, reflect Asheville’s resilience and determination to emerge stronger than ever.

Looking Toward a Bright Future

As Asheville progresses on its path to recovery, optimism abounds. The holiday season promises to bring a much-needed lift in both spirit and tourism, with the reopening of Biltmore’s Christmas celebrations serving as a hopeful symbol. Tourism is crucial to Asheville’s economy, and this annual event is expected to attract visitors eager to support recovery efforts. The anticipated return of visitors provides economic benefits and reinforces Asheville’s enduring appeal as a vibrant, resilient community.

Those moved to support Asheville’s resurgence can contribute through donations to local organizations or purchases from area businesses. Visitors are encouraged to plan trips to Asheville once travel is feasible, as tourism revitalizes the city’s economy.

Resilience, Recovery, and Renewal

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Asheville’s resilience has been a source of pride. From the steadfast Biltmore Estate, a symbol of continuity, to the Montford Historic District, dedicated to preserving heritage, the city’s journey toward recovery is marked by hope and determination. The unwavering support of local organizations, unity among residents, and the promise of a festive holiday season signify Asheville’s bright future.

While challenges remain, Asheville’s strength and unity are evident in every step of recovery. As the community rebuilds and embraces the coming season, Asheville’s resilience testifies its ability to face adversity and emerge renewed. Through collective action, Asheville is on its way to full recovery, embodying the spirit of resilience and renewal that defines this cherished community.

Holidays by Design

with Antoinette Prisco

In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Antoinette Prisco, an accomplished Realtor® and award-winning Interior Designer. With a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of real estate, Antoinette has built a reputation for transforming properties into stunning, market-ready homes. In this Q&A, she shares her insights on preparing your home for the holidays.

Q: What are your favorite tips & tricks for preparing a home for the holiday season?

A: When decorating for the season, remove extra accessories instead of adding to the overall collection. Good successful design is intentional and balanced, not overdone and cluttered.

When placing holiday accessories, pillows, throws and the like, try to balance the concentration of color and coordinate with existing furnishings throughout the room. I look at color as a rhythm for the space, bouncing it from item to item, like pillows on the sofa, an arrangement across the room on a mantle, an accented accessory on an adjacent table, etc.

And when it comes to color themes, if you have a warm color scheme, go with the warmer form of reds, yellows, greens. Such as maroons with golds and sage greens blend well with browns and warm grays. Saturated more intense greens, cherry reds and pumpkin oranges go well with natural wood tones and give off an atmosphere of tradition. Soft blue and gray interiors look great with the non-traditional white, off white and gold or silver decorations.

Q: What are the best types of lighting for creating a warm, festive atmosphere in a home?

A: Lighting options today are amazing and have become very flexible. Many LED fixtures are sold with color rendering scales that are called Kelvin temperatures. Essentially, the higher the number, the cooler the light. A warm LED light ranges below 3000K and most LED bulbs can now be dimmed, so look for the warm or lower Kelvin ratings.

Another trick is to hide your lighting sources, up lights placed behind the tree, or a dark corner of the room will be very effective. Just make sure you cannot see where the light is coming from.

Q: How can entryways be made more welcoming for holiday guests?

A: The best part of the holidays is having family and friends visit and enjoy the season. The first entry is your “front” door which can be a variety of situations depending on you. To make it the best, have a planned drop of point for coats and hats. A hall tree decorated in holiday ribbon or ivy vine, a bench with cute pillows and of course good warm lighting both inside the door and outside. A festive welcome mat and garland surrounding the front door just brings a smile and says, “come on in.”

Q: What are some creative alternatives to traditional holiday decor (e.g., garlands, lights, wreaths)?

A: If you are tired of the traditional garland, wreaths and lights, try these ideas on for size.

Instead of the traditional Christmas tree, buy a live tree to plant later. This tree can be any type and be adorned with faux pears, partridges and popcorn strings. Prewrapped

packages can be placed at the base to fill up the floor and hide the root ball. Just make sure to acclimate the tree so it doesn’t go into shock.

For evergreen garlands, try grapevine strands with tea lights and red berries on the mantle or eucalyptus groupings with grape clusters.

For light strands, try the aforementioned hidden accent lighting placed strategically and at a low level. Use loads of candles, either battery operated or real and in clusters.

Q: When it comes to decorating a dining table for holiday dinners or parties, do you have any special recommendations you could share?

A: The dining table is the place where we all gather and make long lasting memories and when it comes decorating it, choose items that make it easy for your guests to see and talk. Use arrangements that are short enough for people to look beyond and over and keep them simple. The table should look festive but not overdone.

I like to use a main runner with a tablecloth underneath it. Tea light candles in hand cut crystal votive holders that can easily be moved around. The linens can be in color with white plates or vice versa….and napkins accented with a berry garland tied around the middle.

And if you have a chandelier above the table, decorating the fixture will make a dramatic statement. With a candelabra style fixture, change out the lamp shades and with a bowl fixture wrap the wire it’s hung from with a fabric sleeve that coordinates with your table runner. This detail will achieve the idea of spreading and balancing the color throughout the room.

Thanksgiving. Traditions. Turkeys. by

When the kids were at home, we would often take a family vacation during the week of Thanksgiving traveling to a different state or town. Most of the time we took the grandparents with us so they could spend time with their grandkids and also enjoy the location whether it was the snow in Colorado or the Great Smoky Mountains.

As we began this new traveling tradition with my family, some old traditions never changed. My mom has to make the dressing, which is a recipe handed down from her mother. I have to bring the turkey cookies. Yes, turkey cookies. And no, it's not a recipe handed down from my mother nor does the recipe call for turkey.

Since I was about ten years old, every year at Thanksgiving, I would make turkey cookies. Which are actually sugar cookies cut out in the shape of turkeys and decorated with icing. To this day, the family always asks if I'm bringing the turkey cookies to Thanksgiving.

Click below to download the recipe and give it a try! Whatever your tradition is for Thanksgiving, remember that time spent with family is by far the best tradition of all!

Barber Orchards Fruit Stand is a local gem known for its fresh, locally grown apples and produce. This store has been family-owned and operated for five generations in Waynesville, offering visitors a variety of seasonal fruits, homemade apple cider, baked goods, and jams. The store is particularly famous for its apple pies and apple turnovers, making it a popular stop for both locals and tourists exploring the Smoky Mountain region.

“When I go to Barber Orchards, I head straight to their bakery, everything is so delicious! But you wouldn't have the bakery without the amazing apples and the prices are good! My top three favorite things to get there are: apples galore, scrumptious pastries & local honey!”

“Barber Orchards Fruit Stand is a treasure trove of baked delights. The Apple Loaf is unlike anything I've ever tasted, rich and comforting. Their Apple Fritters, dripping with glazed icing and cinnamon, are pure indulgence. And the pies? Absolute heaven in every bite. On wintry days, nothing beats a hot apple cider to warm both heart and soul." – Dani Miner
