DIRECTOR’S NOTE
I’m thrilled that my long time friends and theater colleagues, Philip and Kim, have given me the opportunity to direct this production of Gloria by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins here at 4th Wall. I have been a fan of their work and this intimate playing space for many years. I have also been very impressed with the quality of that work, and they continue their long record of producing some of the best theater in town. I’m very proud to have my name associated with this vital organization. I also can’t think of a better venue for this play. The intimacy of the theater combined with Kevin Rigdon’s set creates the sensation that you are in an adjacent cubicle, unwittingly eavesdropping on your fellow worker’s latest rant. There are bosses who exist only as demanding offstage voices. There are assistant editors, millennials who will seemingly do anything to break out from their literal “boxes,” desperate for professional achievement before their thirtieth birthday. The dysfunctional office environment envelops the entire space. The walls drip with ambition and wicked humor. This is a room full of budding young writers who naturally love language. And are adept at weaponizing it. It’s an atmosphere ripe for satire. Satire is defined as “the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.” Scholars have divided satire into three distinctive types: 1. Horatian (named for Roman satirist Horace) tends to be comedic and light in tone. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Airplane, SNL. 2. Menippean (named for Greek philosopher Menippus) targets questionable morals or beliefs. Animal Farm,1984, Fight Club. 3. Juvenalian (named for Roman satirist Juvenal) is darker, more cynical, and rooted in drama. Jo Jo Rabbit, Network, A Clockwork Orange. Number 3 is where Gloria lives. Like Network, it has the ability to bounce back and forth effortlessly between lacerating humor and unthinkable horror. That sudden change of gears generates the kind of theater that keeps you on the edge of your seat, unprepared for what happens next. It’s not as prescient as Brazil or Network, but Branden Jacobs-Jenkins isn’t bothered with forecasting the future, he’s perfectly happy taking a sledgehammer to the now.

t s o C The Value of Art At 4th Wall, we are committed to paying Houston’s theatre artists a living wage. While it may be impossible to monetize the value of art in our society, we believe it is imperative that we fairly compensate the artists who enrich our lives. We dream of a day when Houston’s professional theatre artists will be able to ply their trades without needing to work any other job. We aim toward a day when sustained theatrical excellence inspires our audience and community to hold our art and the artists who make it to be an indispensable and valued part of life in Houston. To this end, we have made it our mission to prioritize increasing artist pay every year, even beyond the minimum wage stipulated by the Actors’ Equity Association. This season, we are paying Equity actors $320 per week, which is 3.5% more than the mandated minimum wage for theatres of our size. Next season, we plan to increase actor pay by 11% to $355 per week. $355/ week
