DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Summer Shakes was born out of my desire to share my approach to Shakespeare with two constituencies: Houston high school students and students from my alma mater, the Juilliard School. The notion of having them perform a Shakespeare play together I can only attribute to that thing that some people call God and some call “the universe.” I discovered in this program’s first year that I needed a lot of help. I got it from Nile Helgerud, a former student of mine who began as the Young Company Manager but evolved into a musical director and assistant stage manager as well. I got it from Meghan Spear, a U of H stage management student who has “had my back” from the start. I got it from Luis Quintero, who volunteered to be my Assistant Director, but who proved very quickly that I could trust him to work on a scene while I worked on another, thereby doubling our directing bandwidth. I got it from Paige Willson, Andrew Vance, and Jazz Zepeda, old friends and colleagues, all, who designed costumes, lights, and sound. I got it from Michael Mullins and Dave Dusheck of A.D. Players, who loaned us much of our set and delivered it to our door. I got it from the excellent staff here at 4th Wall. Most of all, I got help from two Juilliard students who you’ll see perform tonight. They arrived prepared and eager, and they, too, gave their time generously when extra help was needed on a scene, or by one of the high school students. Aaron Gonner and Arianna Stucki, you make me proud to have gone to our school. When I came in for the first day with the Young Company, I didn’t know what to expect. After about three days, I was surprised to discover that not only were they paying attention to “the old guy,” they were hungry, hungry, hungry for knowledge and experience in this theatre. They exceeded my wildest dreams. I had almost no contact with the parents of these high schoolers, but I do know that every student was on time almost every day, and I DO know who to thank for that: thanks, parents. The As You Like It you’ll see tonight has been cut very little, and we’ve added a few words, and a few songs, but it’s 98% Shakespeare. I’ve stolen something from two productions of the show that I’ve seen: the opening idea from Declan Donnellan’s production and the sheep from Guy Roberts’s production. Thanks are due to both of them. All of the high school students took part in Summer Shakes free of charge because of the generosity of our sponsors. I can’t begin to express how grateful I am for that, so I’ll just say, humbly: thank you. Everything that happens at 4th Wall is because of my wife, Kim Tobin-Lehl. With Love,
Philip Lehl Summer Shakes Program Director

WHO’S WHO AARON GONNER (Orlando, Jaques) was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa. He started performing at an early age when he began training as a dancer as a way to connect with his older sister. His passion for dance led him to compete nationally until his teenage years when he started exploring theatre. He originally planned to pursue a STEM major after high school but, in a moment of clarity, changed his intended college and major shortly after his high school graduation to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Performance at the University of Evansville. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a minor in Physics. His recent credits include Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and Dance Teacher Pat in Dance Nation at The Juilliard School, Ariel in The Tempest and Jim Casey in The Grapes of Wrath at The University of Evansville, and Robert Martin in The Drowsy Chaperone at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse. Interested in the spiritual, the healing power of theatre, a mastery of craft, and the ways in which storytelling changes with medium, he is pursuing his Master of Fine Arts in Acting as a part of the Drama Division at the Juilliard School. ARIANNA GAYLE STUCKI (Rosalind) is an MFA Acting student entering her fourth year at the Juilliard School (Group 51). Born and raised in Utah, Arianna received a BFA in World Theater from NYU Abu Dhabi. Her training took her to 18 countries over the span of four years, studying theatre practices from Ireland to India to Italy. As an actor and playwright, Arianna is most interested in theatre’s power on a global scale to help us encounter difference without fear. Previous roles include Brutus in Julius Caesar, Dionysus in The Bacchae, Ashlee in Clare Barron’s Dance Nation, Achates in Olivier Kemeid’s The Aeneid, Antonio in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, Yerma in Federico García Lorca’s Yerma, and Maria in John Fletcher’s The Woman’s Prize. Her written works have been seen at the Noor Theatre, NYU Abu Dhabi’s Art Center, and at the Juilliard School. Works include Memorial (co-written with Adam Elsayigh) and A Woman’s Prize. Arianna is also an Artistic Associate of The Great Globe Foundation. www.AriannaGayleStucki.com
