Sports Day: “Not the first of it’s kind says resident” In connection with the article we printed in last month’s issue about the sports day being organized, one resident has pointed out an error in the article. In 500 News’ January edition, we were quoted as saying that the Sports Day would be the first of it’s kind since we would see phases competing against each other. It has been brought to our attention that a competition like this was first done in approximately 1990. In those days, there were only 2 phases (phase 1 and 2). The event included march pass as well. In the wake of this we have printed this retraction and offer
our apologies to anyone that article may have offended. The sports will be done as a commemoration of that 1st sports day as it would mark the approximate 20th anniversary of the event. The committee is still being formed for the Sports Day and we are looking for enthusiastic persons from each phase, Balmoral, Aberdeen Park, Gentian, St. Andrews Park, Edinburgh South and 15th Street extension so that each area can be properly represented. Please call 471-0205 for more information.

FORTUNE 500 Eye on Business in Edinburgh 500

Resident’s views on issues affecting Edinburgh 500
Is business good for 500? or 500 good for business?
he construction of the Village Plaza has cemented Edinburgh 500’s fate as a budding commercial center, but is 500 good for business? or
is business good for 500? In recent years, Edinburgh 500 has witnessed an increase in the number of shops, parlours and small business. These businesses cater to the ever expanding community, and with the expected completion of The Towers, Brentwood Town Center and Edinburgh South, this trend will continue. However, recent interviews with
business proprietors operating from the village plaza reveal that businesses are good for the holistic development of the community; but 500 has not been so good to many businesses. These claims surface in the face of many familiar businesses noticeably absent from the Village Plaza. Nonetheless, for many residents, Edinburgh 500 will continue to present the best opportunity to operate a thriving business, especially if it is community oriented.
Some of the long-standing businesses have offered some tips to success. 1.Maintain a good relationship with the customers. 2.Try to provide the goods and services needed. 3.Reliability/ opening hours that are convenient to the community. Through community support, a business can have great success in 500. Business owners should always think of creative ways of gaining potential customers attention.

The concept of the housing area would be to have 500 houses but those intentions quickly diminished. There was only phase 1 and phase 2 in the beginning but as time went by the National Housing Authority (now referred to as the Housing Development C o r p o r a t i o n ) continued to construct houses towards the south and to the east. Phase 3 soon came and phase 4 next which was originally intended to be called Edinburgh East. The residents were all carefree and not many persons new advertisement

The residents formed a council which Mr. Richardson was a part of and they went about to seek better conditions in Edinburgh 500. The NAR party was in power at that point in time and the council sent in requests for parks and playing grounds to be installed for the entertainment of the residents. Phase 1 was the first to get a park and in 1988, Mr. ANR Robinson himself was present at the opening ceremony of the Edinburgh 500 Community grounds,
