Bears ready for continued success under Brown The UCA Bears lost in their opening week at Kansas State and never looked back from there, ripping off 10-straight wins and taking the Southland title outright. The Bears earned a first-round bye in the FCS playoffs, but fell in their first playoff game at home to New Hampshire, 21-15. “2017 was a great year,” said Nathan Brown, a former decorated UCA quarterback who takes over the program this fall. “I don’t want to take away from anything that team accomplished and did. But we all know that we left unfinished

business on the field. I think that team had a chance to make a deep run last year, and the ball just didn’t fall our way in the end. We have a lot of the same guys on our team this year that tasted that Southland championship and success. We should have a lot to build on in 2018.” Former Conway High standout Breylin Smith takes over at quarterback this season. Starting running back Carlos Blackman returns. The junior rushed for 770 yards and nine touchdowns last fall. Returning senior starters Lester Wells and Jakari Dillard are back at receiver. Sophomore Brandon Myers gives the Bears a big receiving target in the end zone. Sophomore Josh Nix takes over the lead tight end spot. The Bears return just one starter on the offensive line — sophomore guard Adrian Harris. Other projected starters on the offensive line include Alex Bridges, Toby Sanderson, Curtis Parker and Hunter Watts. Senior kicker Matt Cummins made 13-of-18 field goals last fall. “Offensively, we brought in, former UCA player and coach, Ken Collums as our offensive coordinator,” Brown said. “He brings a multiple style offense that mixes the run and the pass well. I expect our unit to attack what the defense gives us and play fast football. We need to run the ball efficiently so that the pass game will open up. We have had a lot of success here in our offensive units, so we will mesh what we have done here in the past with what Coach Collums brings with him.
“The expectations and bar have been set high over the years for our offensive units. I don’t expect that to change moving forward.” The Bears return a dynamic sack duo on the defensive line. Senior tackle Eric Jackson and junior end Chris Terrell both racked up 11 sacks a year ago. Sophomore A’Javius Brown gets the starting nod at noseguard in the Bears’ 3-4 defense. Senior Raphael Garner recorded 47 tackles at linebacker in 2017. Seniors Dalvin Simmons and Reggio Dean and sophomore Jackie Harvell round out the starting linebackers. Junior Trai Mosley and sophomore Robert Rochell hold down the corners, and senior Michael Ware and junior Juan Jackson are back as the safeties. “Defensively, we will keep the 3-4 defensive structure we have recruited toward and played with over the past four years. We will stop the run and control the pass with this unit. Our new defensive coordinator Max Thurmond has brought a new sense of passion and energy to that side of the ball. We return a really talented defensive line. That is the area we still have to be great at to make a more national push in the playoffs. I believe we have as much speed on that side of the ball as we ever have had. The bar has also been set high over the past couple years, and that will not change moving forward.” Junior defensive end Chris Terrell terrorized opposing quarterbacks last fall, recording 11 sacks.

Bisons prepped for GAC title run Things didn’t look good for the Harding Bisons — to say the least — after starting the 2017 season 0-3. But the Bisons were resilient and put together 11-straight impressive wins before falling in the Division II semifinals. “It was a perfect case of a team holding together through adversity,” said Scott Goode, assistant athletic director for sports information. “Last season, the team had a new head coach, new offensive coordinator, new defensive coordinator and eight new starters on defense. It took a little bit of time for all of that to come together, but once it did, it was an amazing run. “Coach Paul Simmons’ toughest job last season was holding the team together after the rough start, and he did a masterful job, especially for a first-year head coach. Eleven straight wins and a berth in the national semifinals were evidence of that.” The entire Harding backfield will be comprised of sophomores. Quarterback Preston Paden takes over at quarterback after starting in the semifinal game last year. Paden rushed for 143 yards in that game. Tristan Tucker and Taylor Plaia-Bissel start at slotback, and Cole Chancey returns at full back after rushing for 1,347 yards and 15 touchdowns as a freshman. Senior Kohl Blickenstaff and junior Bobby Green lead the receivers. Three starters return on the offensive line in seniors Keith Pledger (left guard), Bryce Bray (center) and Heath
Pledger (right guard). Sophomores Sam Wilson and Mason Hutto are new starters at the tackles. “Offensively, Harding’s strengths will be on the offensive line, led by senior center Bryce Bray, and at the fullback position, where sophomores Cole Chancey and Romar Reades will carry the load,” Goode said. Senior T.J. Winslow and junior Toni Montez return to anchor the defensive line at end and tackle, respectively. Senior Devyn Comer gets the start at the other end, and sophomore Daniel Anderson disrupts at noseguard. Sam Blankenship is a stalwart at linebacker. The senior put up 130 tackles, 3.5 sacks and three interceptions last fall. Sophomore Shedrick Robinson gets the nod at the other linebacker spot in the Harding Eagle defensive scheme. Four starters are back in the secondary — seniors Dra Smith, Christian Witt, Frank Herbert and Tony Becton — and senior Daylon Markham rounds out the defensive back starters. “Harding has its most experienced, deepest defense in recent years, led by senior All-American linebacker Sam Blankenship and senior defensive end Devyn Comer,” Goode said. “The battle for the top spot will be as tough as ever in the GAC. Ouachita has experience at all of the skill positions offensively, except quarterback. Southern Arkansas has dangerous senior Barrett Renner at quarterback, and many expect Henderson State to bounce back after going 6-5 last season.”

Must-See Game “We would love to have everyone we could get here for the Berry game because they won the conference last year, and they represent the lone home blemish for the Warriors at Crafton-Faulkner field.” — Buchanan
Warriors hunting for playoff return Hendrix continued building success in 2017 with and 8-2 final record, but injuries ultimately left the Warriors falling a little short. They have high expectations again heading into the fall. “I think that we exceeded external expectations after graduating 26 seniors the previous year,” Coach Buck Buchanan said. “I would say that we were very happy to have our best record, and it was great to send our seniors out as the winningest Sept. 1 Lyon class in school history. Sept. 8 at Texas Lutheran It was also great that we Sept. 15 Centre finished the season in the Sept. 22 at Austin Top 10 in the Southern Sept. 29 Sewanee Region; however, we did Oct. 6 at Birmingham-Southern not win a conference title, Oct. 13 Berry and we were probably Oct. 27 Trinity just a few plays away Nov. 3 at Rhodes from going back to the Nov. 10 at Millsaps playoffs.” Miles Thompson returns at quarterback as the reigning Southern Athletic Offensive Player of the Year. The junior passed for 3,472 yards and 37 touchdowns and rushed for another 10 touchdowns last fall. Junior Travis England, sophomore Kip VanHoose and freshman Caleb Williams compete at running back. Michael Spainhour leads the receiving corps. The senior hauled in 712 receiving yards and eight touchdowns last fall. Sophomores Blake Hinton and Drew Dundee rotate in at receiver with sure hands. Junior Gage Oppel is a great blocker at H-back. Four starters return on the offensive line: junior Xavion Gardner (left tackle), sophomore Justin Bean (left guard), sophomore Jordan Toland (right guard) and junior Stephan Bonilla (right tackle). Junior Parker Hall takes over at center. “You will still see us being aggressive on both sides of the football,” Buchanan said. “Offensively, we will continue to exploit defenses by getting the ball to our skill players in space while dictating the tempo of the game.”
2018 Schedule
Stone Paul returns at linebacker for the Warriors. The senior put up 50 tackles and seven tackles for a loss in 2017. (Photo courtesy of Hendrix Sports Information) The Warriors return their defensive line intact with seniors Collin Mayer (end) and Duwan Booker (tackle) and juniors Jacob Buchanan (tackle) and Adonnis Butler (end). Booker put up big numbers on the interior last fall — 52 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Senior Stone Paul and sophomore Brooks Parham return at linebacker, alongside new starter junior Joel Brackett. Paul recorded 50 tackles and one interception as a junior. Juniors Chandler Marquandt (corner), Chad McGonigal (free safety) and Cory McGonigal (strong safety) and sophomore Ronnie McShan (corner) project as secondary starters. Senior punter Garrett Wolf and junior kicker Sandy Burks are both back. “Defensively, we will continue to give multiple looks, coverages and pressures while putting our best players in positions to make plays,” Buchanan said. “We also are looking to have more consistency in our special teams this year with all of our specialists returning. Our expectation is to continue to do what it takes to win games and send the current senior class out as the winningest class in school history.”

Junior quarterback Jacolby Criswell put up monster numbers for the Devil Dogs last fall in both passing (1,947 yards, 20 touchdowns) and rushing (969 yards, 14 touchdowns). (Robert Garrett photos) Midway through the 2017 season, the Morrilton Devil Dogs were struggling at 2-3. Then, the Alma game happened. “We started slow but really improved and finished strong,” Coach Cody McNabb said. “We beat Alma, who was leading the conference, and that got us rolling.” Morrilton rolled off five straight wins to finish tied for first in the 5A West. The Devil Dogs eventually fell in the quarterfinals in a heartbreaker at Wynne, 17-14. Junior Jacolby Criswell was a game-changer for Morrilton last year at quarterback, leading the Devil Dogs in both passing (1,947 yards, 20 touchdowns) and rushing (969 yards, 14 touchdowns). Junior Xavier Clemons and sophomore Jackson Moll will share carries at running back. Clemons rushed for 578 yards and eight touchdowns last fall. Seniors Keywan Shavers and Brett Jones and junior Steven Rector start up front on the defensive line in the Morrilton 3-4 defense. Morrilton’s top tacklers return at linebacker — Jake Knowles (88) and Andrew Lentz (62). Gerrett Hendrix and Dylan White hold down the other two starting linebacker spots. Senior Dalton Kellar and junior Marquise Criswell lead in the secondary at the safety positions, and Toney and Wofford defend the corners. “We could have an explosive offense and a physical front seven on defense,” McNabb said. “Our weaknesses are lack of depth on the offensive and defenJunior receiver Shacoby Criswell gives the Devil sive lines and inexperience in the secondary.” Dogs a deep threat in the passing game.

Clinton poised for championship run The Clinton Yellow Jackets recorded one of their best seasons ever in 2017 with a 10-0 regular season, a 1-3A conference title and two playoff wins. But, ultimately, the Yellow Jackets came up short of their true goal, falling at Junction City late in the quarterfinals. “It was a great season that ended nine seconds too late,” Coach Chris Dufrene said. “Going 12-1 was our best record in school history.” With a move to a new conference (2-3A) and starters returning at 18 positions, Clinton is primed for another record season, and this time, the Yellow Jackets aim to finish the job. The Yellow Jackets return quite the backfield. Junior quarterback Weston Amos did it all for the Yellow Jackets last fall, passing for more than 1,000 yards and leading the team in rushing with 732 yards. Clinton returns its second-leading rusher in senior all-state running back Sky Davidson, who rushed for 668 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior. Junior Ethen Drake rushed for 662 yards for Clinton last fall. Senior fullback Caleb Bowman returns after leading the team with 14 rushing touchdowns, and junior John-Riley Hinchey rushed for 589 yards as a sophomore. Two receivers return with experience — junior Austin Drake and senior Keaton Gresham. The offensive line includes a mix of veterans and new faces with seniors Kelley Collins and Ty Parker, junior Cade Treadaway and sophomores Tye Pruitt and Hunter Johnson. “Our outlook for offense is to continue with the Wing-T with variations of spread stuff,” Dufrene said. Seniors Cort Bagley and Caleb Kirkpatrick lead on the defensive line, alongside Hinchey and Gresham. Bowman and Davidson are three-year starters at linebacker, and they’ll be joined by senior Mason Dowell and junior Jayden Exzabe. Twins Ethen and Austin Drake are two-way starters as they hold down the corners. Seniors Nathan Ross and Trey Webster look poised to take over the safety positions. “Defensively, we will aim to limit the offense and get the ball back for our offense,” Dufrene said. “We want to be a scoring defense. The 2-3A should be a good conference with Melbourne and Harding Academy, both good programs.”

Wampus Cats chase 7A Central title under Fimple Sometimes the right mix of seniors and playmakers can lead to an unforgettable season. And that’s exactly what happened for the Conway Wampus Cats in 2017. Hansberry and senior guard Lance Rogers. Juniors Zaul Vences, Haze Denton and Robert Scott are primed for starting roles on the offensive line.
“We look to be able to continue the success that the previous senior class had in 2017,” Coach Keith Fimple said. “We have talent and depth on the lines, but we have to grow up quick.” Conway has a big task ahead of itself on defense, as last year’s top five tacklers all graduated in May. Senior Kaine Aaron and junior Korlin McKinney are quick on the defensive line. Kaine
was a big presence in the first two non-conference games last fall before getting knocked out by injury. He returned in Week 10. Seniors Cade Cypert, Joaquin Coria, Tyler Pierce and Dallas McAllister rotate on the defensive line. The biggest hole for the Conway defense is replacing all the production lost at linebacker. Seniors Tez Miller, Darius Washington and Malik Benton are also back in the secondary after gaining valuable experience in rotation last fall. “I like our team defensively a lot — from the
line with Korlin McKinney and Kaine Aaron to the secondary with Tez Miller and Roman Aaron — and in between will be the next wave of linebackers that Conway always seems to produce,” Matthews said. The 7A Central is brutal as always with the likes of the defending state champs North Little Rock and a deep and talented Bryant. “For the first time in a long time, Central Arkan-
sas is home to the defending state champion in the state’s highest classification with North Little Rock,” Matthews said. “They are who we are all chasing right now. It will be an interesting year with Cabot, as legendary coach Mike Malham has announced this will be his last season. Bryant will be as good as always, and you can imagine Week 10 in Saline County will have playoff implications again.”

Eagles remain dangerous in 5-2A With a coaching change last fall, it would have been understandable for the Conway Christian Eagles to have a small drop-off on the field as they learned a new system, but that was far from the case. A talented group of seniors led the program to a school-record 11 wins and another share of the 5-2A title. The Eagles eventually fell in the 2A quarterfinals at Mount Ida, 34-28. “Being the first year, there was a lot to learn both on my side and for the players,” Coach Justin Kramer said. “I was pleased at our progress and felt like we had a great year.” With talent back all across the field — especially at the skill positions — the Eagles are primed for another 5-2A title run. Senior all-state quarterback Jacob Wood returns after throwing for 2,418 passing yards and 25 touchdowns last fall. Add in his rushing stats, and Wood racked up 3,539 total yards and 50 total touchdowns. Senior running back Wyatt Lawrence gained valuable experience last fall in rotation. Junior John Michael Scherrey gives the Eagles flexibility as he can line up in the backfield and at receiver. Top receivers include seniors
Jesse Dather, Bennett Ellis, Brandon Shaw and Nick Scherrey. Linemen Lou Kerst, Jevin Callaway, Jack Stapleton, Beau Stevenson and Russell Jackson provide the foundation of the Eagle offense. Callaway and Kerst are two-way starters on the defensive line. Callaway recorded six games with seven or more tackles last fall. Newcomer sophomore Robert Taylor brings quickness to the defensive line. Jackson put up big numbers at linebacker last fall with 84 tackles. Stapleton and juniors Clay Hammett and Miguel Thorpe hold down the other starting linebacker positions. Both John Michael and Nick Scherrey start in the secondary, alongside Ellis and senior Matthew Dent. Ellis will rarely come off the field as he also handles the Eagles’ kicking and punting duties. “We feel good about our continued growth on both sides of the ball,” Kramer said. “We are installing a new defense this year. Our strength is our experience at the skill positions. A weakness will be our depth.”

Mayflower Eagles return explosive offensive weapons It’s rare for a team that went 11-1 the year before to experience big changes the next year, but the Mayflower Eagles are under new leadership in Austin Emerson this fall. Emerson was the offensive line coach for Hendrix last year, and he’s a former University of Central Arkansas Bear. With seven starters back on each side of the ball, the Mayflower Eagles plan to keep things rolling. Senior Dalton Muse takes over the spread offense at quarterback, and he’ll have several big weapons at his disposal. Twins Deon and Keon Simmons are back after monster junior seasons. Deon, a running back, rushed for 2,562 yards and 40 touchdowns on 243 carries. Keon, a rushing and receiving threat at receiver, rushed for 876 yards and 17 touchdowns and caught 154 yards and three touchdowns. Lions’ skill players lead the way After winning 13 games two years in a row, the England Lions dropped to 5-6 last fall, but remained competitive among the top of the 5-2A. Andrew Roberson takes over the program after previously coaching at Conway Christian. Mason Brazeal is back at quarterback. The junior passed for 1,376 yards and 19 touchdowns in his sophomore campaign. England has big shoes to fill as 2,000-plus yard rusher Darrius Clarkson graduated in May. K’von McPherson and athlete Darren McClinton will lead the rushing attack. Seniors Justus Filoteo and Tyler Woods and junior Tamarous Dodson provide big-time playmaking potential at receiver. Sam Marales, George Mendoza, Keyshawn Harris, DeShun Hogan and Chris Lopez keep the offense moving from the offensive line. Senior Jordon Slayden is a force at noseguard. Dodson and senior Demond Scales hold down the ends. Linebackers McPherson, Lopez, Filoteo, Blake Benson and Therman Clingmon spread across the field in Roberson’s 3-3 Stack defense. Brandon Terry, Jalen Rhodes and Michael Cooley provide speed in coverage in the secondary. “We will run the spread on offense and run multiple defenses,” Roberson said. “Our strength is that we are really good at the skill positions. Lack of depth is our main weakness. The 5-2A, from top to bottom, will be very competitive.”

Quitman struggled to produce wins in DJ Marrs’s first season with the Bulldogs, Isaac Clemmons (Sr. WR/DB) but the season wasn’t defined simply by the Trey Lovelady (Sr. WR/LB) overall record. Darian Boyce (Sr. OL/LB) Seth Haynes (Sr. WR/LB) “When I got here in June, there were David Alvarez (Sr. WR/DB) only 14 players on the roster, so we were able to get some players out of the hallways and finish the season,” Marrs said. “We didn’t win as many as we wanted, but the juniors learned a lot and will be better leaders this year because of last season.” Must-See Game The Bulldogs had three receivers with “Week 1 at Rose Bud. Senior Tyler Maxwell takes over at quarterback after transferring from Mayflower. Seniors Darius Thompson and Antavious Henderson bring experience back to the Hornet rushing attack, which averaged more than 100 yards a game last fall. Senior Evan Robinson is a big target at tight end, and juniors Zyon Slade, Demetress Williams and Jace Hartje provide plenty of options at receiver. The Hornets return a deep and experienced offensive line, including starters Justin Ruffin, Owen Horton, Mason Andrews, Malik Williams and Chel-C Hardin. “Offensively, we expect to score a lot of points,” Horton said. “We will have an exciting offense via run and pass.” Alex Philips holds down the middle at nose tackle, and Jakolby Robinson and Chris Jones start on the ends. Bryson Duke, Brick Gore, Joseph Winfunke and Schwuann Malone hold the starting linebacker positions, and Thompson, Brian Worsham, KJ Brewer and Cedric Gable defend the secondary. Thompson forced 11 turnovers at strong safety a year ago. “Defensively, we have replaced size with speed,” Horton said. “Our focus will be causing turnovers.
