Research Agenda and Process Overview Between the poetry of a cultural space and the unappreciated heritage, a fine line is draw. A multifunctional space for walkers rising on the path of the lands in Deal Castle, which is a historical building in Kent, UK. The project explores the relationship between architecture, heritage and emotions. In order to engage with the audience, we have created three installations based on three different timelines. The project explores the path of migrations, about the feelings of moving and belongings. The purpose of this installation created to give people a sense of belonging and unity, also encouraged the visitors to understand more about migration. This project focus on 3 different events in Deal castle, Jigsaw Arch, Interactive Flower, the Caption’s house. Each one brings a different experience of heritage and migration. The vision of this project is to pay a tribute to immigrant lives. To those who have come from far, crossing and battling the waves of the rough sea in hopes of a better life.

Research Questions 1. How can this project bring awareness to the experiences in migration ? 2. In what way will it be arranged in order to appeal to emotions such as“unity” and “belonging”? 3. How will the elements help trigger interaction or engagement?

Research Statement

Significance and Contribution Bring awareness to migration, the sense of belonging and heritage of different culture. Global movements are invisible. Nevertheless, the results of migration are becoming apparent in many countries in different parts of the world. People are currently observing the highest level of global movement in history and the subsequent identity crises from that. Human beings have expanded the range over the entire planet, from the origin of the history until today. Deal Castle has watched over the Kentish coast for nearly 500 years. It has been built and rebuilt several times over the years, but the hardest hit of destruction was when part of it was bombed as a result of war. This led to drastic loss of not just part of the castle but important lives. Immigrant lives. Methodologies 1. Interviewing and understanding the different experience of migration. 2. Prototyping different models of the Jigsaw Arch structure and materials through 3D models. 3. Research on measurements and survey the existing site to conduct an effective site analysis and fit the installation in without hurting the historical building. 4. Creating prototypes of jigsaw and support system according to design needs.

Design Proposal The design outcome will emerge users in their emotions as well as pay a tribute to the immigrants that have existed in Kent. This would be done by incorporating the past into the present, as their movements and behaviours heavily influence the final outcome.

The project will consist of 3 spaces.

Key technological outcomes of proposal 1. Conducting a thorough site analysis that will help with drafting outsection drawings of the space. 2. Creating 3D models of the final design outcome. The project will be modelled in Sketchup which will then be transported to Lumion. 3. Creating a video outcome with the use of Lumion and then editing with Premiere Pro. 4. Create visual storyboards in order to link our storytelling to our design.

Design Development As mentioned in the design proposal, the project has elements, being the historic, interaction and experience of migration. Each will need a separate methodology. 1. Analysing historical values: a analysing of interior of Deal Castle, look into historical drawing and how it changed through different time.

3. Design how it will work, interact and instruct the audience. Using light and sound through Lumion. (hand drawings and video players) 4. Create the detail part of Jigsaw blocks, the sensors, connection spots and the wires.

5. Installing the projector in the designed place, displaying so that the audience can see and listen to 2. Modelling: Building a model in the video. SketchUp base on the information and drawing given by Historic England. Importing the outcome to Lumion and producing renders with Unreal Engine.

Critical Design Elements 1. The model of Deal Castle. 2. An interact installation that responds audibly and visually with the user’s movement. 3. Remove and reconnect of the jigsaw blocks.

Process & Methods

Prototyping and testing After the storyline is mapped out and the final ideology of the project is decided, the digital formation will start to take place in the form of draft models. In the prototype and testing, we hope to do different kinds of 3D models to test what is the best way to fit the installation into the space. a. Deal Castle The first would be to analyse and create an interior space and then place our installations and get it to adjust to the space decided upon. And roughly place our installations around the castle and decide as a group what the best method would be.

b. Elements in 3D model About the element testing, different case study to find the element we wanted. The shape, colours and how to use these elements to show our connection with heritage and migration. Through 3D models, we build different prototype to test how does it install it in the old building. c. The connections The jigsaw has been tested different ways in 3D models to make sure the shape and the connection is fitting the environments.

Fabrication Techniques To develop the installation, a series of tests need to be conducted. Different kind of testing will be done in order to test how this design can best suit this project. The jigsaw arch structure will be more ambitious this time, I need to focus on the way they connect to the walls and how can the jigsaw be moved and reconnect. With sensory sound and speakers hidden in the installation. A. SketchUp Using SketchUp to create digital version of the drawings from 1920-1970. To build and feel the environment.

B. Sensors A code that allows jigsaw to light up, triggered the projectors and the speakers in the project. C. Video There will be two video in this project, one is the projection of people sharing their migration experience through video.Second video is to display actual footage of how the Jigsaw Arch environment.

Occupation and Interaction When the audience pick up the glowing blocks, the installation will adjust the colour to instruct user to reconnect, the area around the connectable spot will light up. When user reconnect the block, the sound of different person telling the experience of migration will start playing around the room, and the projector will project the video on the wall. This playful installation will be interact with in the basement of the Deal castle. It will allow visitors to walk through it, played with it, listened to the story of migration through different times. This creates a shared spatial and social experience.

Turning to the website, visitors can easily found the concept of the project. Video demonstrate how to use the installation and where to find it in the Deal Castle.

Review of Outcomes

Dissemination and Future Development Historical England has rebuild some part of Deal castle, although It is not as famous as Walmer Castle, the historical meaning of Deal is still important. The installation developed a different way of build, and created a new landscape in Deal Castle. The target audience of this project is not only immigrants, it’s a tribute for all ages, gender, and nationality to enjoy. The project can have the possibility of being further developed as a study of heritage and urban characteristics of Deal.
