Crazy news Traditional newspaper circulation is plummeting like a stone and it seems some will stop at nothing to spin a crazy yarn to attract readers. It all began years ago with Graham Smith the “Freddie Starr ate my hamster” farce, conjured up by a ne’er do well publicist now residing at Her Majesty’s pleasure. Looking at some of today’s offerings that story almost becomes believable. The Daily Express, once a highly respected broadsheet newspaper, is now the epitomy of tabloid tack. Only recently they reported that aliens found just 25 miles above the earth could hold the secret of life. Well of course they could, any fool knows that. They’ll be telling us next that 650 elected MPs in Westminster are good for the country, we’d believe that as well wouldn’t we? But this has to be my favourite. One fan of the treat pease pudding alarmed security at Newcastle Airport who were concerned by its apparent similarity to the dangerous explosive Semtex. The passenger was taking tubs of the treat on an easyJet flight to Gatwick when he was stopped during routine searches of hand luggage. The 58-year-old, an actor from Newcastle who now lives in Sussex, offered to let staff taste the dish but they declined. “I love my pease pudding,” said the passenger, who wished to remain anonymous. “I think the resemblance to Semtex was pushing it a bit far as it was in containers marked pease pudding.

“But I did have six tubs to take back down south with me.I told them that they could taste it if they wanted to. “One of the security guys said to me that it had come up on the scanner. He told me ‘technically, this could be classed as Semtex’. “I told them that they could taste it if they wanted to. “At that point they said ‘next time put it in the hold’.” After airport staff further examined the six tubs the traveller was cleared to take them on the flight. Pease pudding is made from boiled legumes and traditionally loved in the North East of England. The anonymous passenger added: “I was very glad that they allowed me to keep them in the end. “It is quite hard to get your hands on pease pudding down south.” An HM Customs spokeswoman said: “There is no customs policy with regard to pease pudding so far as I am aware.” A spokeswoman for Newcastle Airport said they did not comment on security matters.

Islands are fascinating places, and none more so than The Azores, an archipelago of nine islands in the mid-Atlantic. The result of a volcanic ridge, they are in fact, Portuguese, officially discovered in 1432 by Goncalo Velho Cabral, even though Lisbon is nearly 1,500 kilometres to the east. And why on earth would you visit these somewhat isolated islands? Ben Fogle, adventurer, explorer and broadcaster, waxes lyrical about The Azores due to the contrasts that occur within them – other worldly landscapes as you would imagine on the moon, with pumice stone and frozen lava formations, then a hillside away, lush, dense plants growing in the fertile volcanic soil producing magnificent azaleas and hydrangeas. The volcanic craters are now filled with deep blue, green lakes and steaming, bubbling fumaroles, a reminder that whilst the local volcanoes are dormant, they are certainly not extinct! A trip to the Furnas Valley will swiftly provide evidence of this. Another great fan of The Azores, Noel Josephides founder of Sunvil Holidays, compares them to New Zealand, both in their startling geographical features and also their ambiance, more of which later. The British are famous for their love of gardens and plants, which are some of the greatest attractions here, with the hydrangeas producing stunning displays across the islands in June and in April, the azaleas are at their best. The wild agapanthus grow with gusto and rather gorgeous tree ferns add to the remarkable list of self-seeding plants here. It seems as if the climate, which is mild and temperate due to the Gulf Stream, where even on winter days it never gets colder than 14C, with the summers reaching about 27C and rain always a possibility, combined with the rich

TRAVEL earth provide growing conditions in which almost anything can flourish. The unexpected Gorreana tea estate and plantation, over 125 years old, is certainly testament to this as are the pineapple greenhouses on Sao Miguel, where the Ananaz (the specific pineapple grown on the Azores) is celebrated. So apart from the horticulture, what is there to do? These islands are certainly a draw for the outdoor types, there is walking and hiking aplenty to enjoy, just so long as you take a good waterproof jacket as a shower is never far away. The UNESCO heritage site at Santa Luzia vineyards is certainly worth a visit and if your legs are up to it, Mount Pico can be climbed! For those who are happy in or on water, kayaking and canyoning are on offer, the former a gentle way to explore the coast line of dramatic cliffs and the latter a type of coastal obstacle course which really gets you up close and personal with nature. There is no getting away from the fact that The Azores are in the middle of the Atlantic, so a boat trip is a must, with the strong possibility of seeing whales, sharks and mantra rays. And swimming with dolphins is an option too. To return to the ambiance of The Azores, they are proclaimed to be ‘homely’ rather than sophisticated, no designer clothing needed, sturdy footwear essential, running at a leisurely pace and on ‘island’ time, which does sound relaxing and rather calming. Accommodation here is comfortable, with small family hotels and charming quintas, giving the opportunity to get to know the locals and understand the way of life. International hotel chains have yet to arrive here, no bad thing perhaps for preserving a special place. And whilst the islands are based on historic volcanic activity, it seems that the current tranquil, laid back lifestyle is

doing all it can to counteract this. Ben Fogle’s infectious enthusiasm for the Azores encourages all active travellers to pay a visit and find out more. Visit silvertraveladvisor.com and type Ben Fogel into the Search box to listen to his radio interview with Jennie Carr.

Canal Cruising alongside the Severn is no bore By David Graham from Silver Travel Advisor. David has worked for much of his professional life as a journalist for national newspapers. Now retired, he is an advisor and writer for Silver Travel Advisor, the only information and review website for mature travellers. Time and tide being what they are, we didn’t manage to see the Severn Bore but then again, cruising gently alongside the River Severn on Britain’s first-ever ship canal wasn’t a bore, either. It turned out to be a really indulgent treat and an education rolled into one, travelling on the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal in splendidly-catered comfort on board the 153-tonne MV Edward Elgar, thanks to English Holiday Cruises. Leaving the car in Gloucester, we headed for the boat, the largest hotel boat on Britain’s inland waterways, for 6pm, in nice time to find our cabin and then muster for a welcome drink and introductions all round, before dinner and a table quiz. Sleep is on the lower deck, with berths for 22 passengers in 11 outside twin cabins with a window well above the waterline, all en-suite with a walk-in ‘wetroom’ shower and all mod cons, and

10

with everyone looked after by a fivestrong crew, led by Captain Nick.

begins to form before racing upstream at certain times of the year.

Nick has been a mariner all his working life and his skills were evident on our first morning, when he deftly pulled away from the West Quay mooring, before heading off to exit the docks under Llanthony Bridge, lifted bang on time to let us start our journey along the canal.

We moored up here, boarded a small coach and headed past Frampton’s charming canal-side church dating from 1086 and were driven inland alongside the longest village green in England, before arriving at picturesque, poundnotes-and-pedigree Berkeley Castle. Steeped in history and home to the same family line since the 12th century, the castle in its eight acres of gardens is well worth a visit.

This gave us time to practice waving to the people we held up, a rehearsal for our meticulously-timed arrival at Two-Mile Cut and the huge, modern Netheridge Bridge, which carries Gloucester’s south west bypass and swung open to allow our stately progress. There are a good many more bridges en route, both manual and machine-operated, each with a smiling bridge keeper. Fuelled up with a ‘full English’ from the galley, it was time to retrace the route of the tall ships that used to carry goods between Gloucester and all parts of the world. Standing on the upper deck we did get a tall-ish view over the lush, rolling countryside to the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds. We headed through Saul Junction, and pressed on to Frampton-on-Severn, looking across the stretch of river where the notorious Bore

Back at the Elgar, there was time for a stroll before captain’s cocktails and dinner – pate with chutney; slow-cooked blade of beef; followed by summer fruit terrine, then cheeses and coffee and another diverting table quiz. After a good night’s sleep, we carried on to Sharpness, still with its connection to the sea into the Bristol Channel, and a skilled U-turn was called for to start the return trip. This brought us back past the remains of the old Severn railway bridge, before we moored up to see the Purton Hulks – an astonishing site where redundant barges have been beached to form breakwaters and protect the vulnerable banks of the canal from the fierce tidal flows of the Severn Estuary.

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

TRAVEL Glass in hand, there was no quiz on our final night, but excellent live entertainment from swing and jazz duo Ain’t Misbehavin’ – an unexpected treat. A late, great night, and our last day dawned all too early, but then breakfast set us up for a sail to Saul Junction and the Cotswold Canals Trust Visitor Centre where enthusiasts Clive and Jill Field told of the splendid project to restore two historic waterways and connect the Severn to the Thames.

Aerial surveys have revealed at least 80 historic hulks in this nautical graveyard.

Then on board again for a lunch-on-themove as we headed back to the docks in the heart of Gloucester – timed to the second, like our departure, to negotiate both swing and lift bridges on the approach.

Then it was time to move on to the nearby Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre founded by Sir Peter Scott, seen as the birthplace of nature conservation. It was easy to have a lively conversation over dinner, as for much of the trip there were only12 people on board, although there are berths for 22 in the 11 en-suite, outside cabins, as well as the live-in crew. It’s also worth noting at this stage that coffee and tea are available all day and night, and there’s also a daily happy hour in the bar from 6 – 8pm, with bargain wine and 20 per cent off all drinks.

Time for goodbyes all round as skipper Nick spun the Elgin on its axis to moor up inch-perfect at Alexandra Quay. Hands-on company chief Richard was soon on board to help make way for the afternoon arrivals for the next cruise down the canal.

Factbox David Graham was a guest of English Holiday Cruises aboard their 4-Star Hotel Boat ‘Edward Elgar’. He took a 4-day/3-night ‘Historic Canal’ cruise along the Gloucester-Sharpness canal. Several canal cruises are available in October and April each year at special rates starting at £230pp for a weekend cruise. The Edward Elgar also offers longer ‘mini-Rhine’ style cruises out of Gloucester on the River Severn from May to September, including a new 7-day ‘Severn Wonders’ cruise in 2016. All cruises include 3 meals daily, wine with dinner, free-flow tea/ coffee, outside tours at every stop, one night of live entertainment, WiFi and more. Stroll through the Seasons at Trentham Gardens Described as the “garden make-over of the decade” by The Daily Telegraph last year, Staffordshire’s Trentham Gardens was named the UK’s “Garden of the Year” in the annual BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards earlier this year. One of the country’s must-see gardens, Trentham Gardens mixes high-end design with family-friendly fairy trails and woodland walks.

The Italian Garden The Italian Garden planting is designed within the historic framework of Sir Charles Barry’s original Italianate Garden of the 19th Century. Renowned Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medallist,Tom Stuart-Smith, was commissioned to revive The Italian Garden with one of the largest contemporary perennial plantings in Europe. The recasting of The Italian Garden planting is a contemporary scheme based upon a naturalistic style which combines herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses. The garden is designed to provide interest all-year-round, many of the perennials in The Italian Garden are left standing throughout Autumn and into late Winter. The planting utilises hot bold colours towards the top of the garden, where Trentham Hall once stood, with more subtle and lighter colours as the planting approaches the lake.

Floral Labyrinth A labyrinth of paths meanders through 30 beds of tall perennial planting, offering up bold colours and wonderful aromas. Piet Oudolf’s contemporary scheme 12

is set against a backdrop of historic parkland, containing old Yew trees, a Tulip tree and an Acer CapidocciumCappadocia maple - which has the largest girth in the British Isles. The depth of colour and shadow of the majestic Cedar of Lebanon, contrasts beautifully with the bold drifts of herbaceous perennials. Tucked away in a peaceful part of the garden, flanked by the River Trent, no visit to Trentham is complete without losing yourself in The Floral Labyrinth. The garden goes on long into the Winter with wonderful seed heads that capture the frost.

Rivers of Grass The Rivers of Grass evoke a sense of intimacy for the visitor amongst the unrestricted flow of plant form and texture, developing within the garden throughout the year. A naturalistic weave of grasses and punctuating herbaceous perennials, have been specifically selected to grow en masse. They are adapted to thrive in naturally challenging growing conditions. Two varieties of Molinia caerulea dominate the scheme. Both grasses provide texture and movement and most importantly thrive in the variable conditions of the area. The ground here is usually damp, will occasionally flood, but may be on the drier side throughout the Summer. The grasses are interspersed with a narrow range of other perennials, giving the appearance of a watery meadow in late Spring, before the grasses dominate the scheme in the Summer, turn golden in

Autumn and are cropped back in midJanuary. Benefits of Booking in a Group Discounted admission for groups of 12 or more paying visitors to the gardens and for joint tickets. The group organiser gets free admission to the gardens as well as a free familiarisation visit. Free all day coach parking, free admission to the gardens for coach drivers and all coach drivers receive a complimentary £5 food and beverage voucher. Facilities · Trentham Gardens are accessed on foot via Trentham Shopping Village, both venues are highly accessible to wheelchair users and even though it’s a massive site - there’s plenty of facilities and benches around for those with mobility issues. · We have 14 cafes and restaurants on site so there’s plenty of choice when it comes to dining. Joint Tickets Trentham Gardens has joined together with Trentham Monkey Forest to provide excellent value joint group tickets. To qualify for group rate tickets, there must be 12 or more paying guests, if you wish to request further details please fill in a group enquiry form or call us on 01782 645215. Door to Door Coach Tours with Ellen Smith Membership No: 10228

Coach Holidays with a difference. We all know that often coach holidays get a bad press – waiting in bus stations for the coach to arrive, long arduous pickup routes to an interchange, waiting around there for your holiday coach all before you’re destination bound! Once you’re there too often poor quality hotels with mass catering, an extra charge for outings and then to top it all off the same gruelling journey home – no chance of the six o’clock news!

If that all sounds too familiar why not give us a try? We are Manchester based and offer the only true ‘Door to Door’ coach holiday service in the area. Established as far back as 1900 in Rochdale we have a long and distinguished history as a good quality, value for money coach holiday operator.

What’s so different about us? Firstly our ‘Door to Door’ service. This is a true door to door service. We pick you up from your home address at a pre-arranged time in a taxi or small minibus and take you straight to one of our two meeting points, Birch Services near Heywood or Poplar Services near Lymm. There you meet up with your driver and coach who will take you on your holiday. There’s no hanging around, you’re usually on your way within 15 to 20 minutes. We don’t leave anyone behind!

On your return date the reverse of the first day happens. Your taxi is waiting for you at one of the two service stations and you’re usually home with a cup of tea in time to watch the news!

What else can we tell you? All our holidays are fully bonded by the Confederation Of Passenger Transport Bonding Scheme, which is a government approved consumer protection scheme ensuring your money is protected. We offer very popular ‘Mature Singles’ holidays where all bedrooms at the hotel are used for sole occupancy – great for the single traveller. Oh and we offer continental coach holidays, this year Lake Como, Lake Garda, Swiss Chocolate Train & A Taste of the Alpine and Normandy for the D Day landing beaches. We have a regular news letter the ‘Tiger Talk’, (our logo is a tiger) that offers new tours during the year and several of our popular ‘Mystery Tours’ during each year. We have a website www.ellensmith.co.uk that has all the details of our holidays – and you can book on-line too. If you wish to call us our staff are very experienced individuals who know lots about our range of holidays. Finally we offer Fred Olsen cruises from Liverpool at prices you won’t believe and a variety of Air, Cruise & Worldwide holidays - all with our ‘Door to Door’ service included.

Your Driver is an experienced individual and the coach will be of an executive standard with toilet, air conditioning and reclining seats. On the journey to the hotel we tend to avoid motorway services and visit a village, town, city or other suitable location instead. Because of our timely departure we plan to arrive at our destinations at about 4:30pm giving you plenty of time for a quick snooze prior to dinner. All the hotels we use are normally 3 or 4 star with the odd family run 2 star hotel, that we have used for many years. We use a range of different hotels to suit a particular tour. Many of our tours are themed – ‘Royal Sandringham & the Sport of Kings’ and ‘An Irish Country House Experience’ to name just two. All our tours include day excursions (no extra charge – ever!), which can include canal journeys, train journeys, castles, country estates and so much more. The vast majority of our hotels offer a porterage service, so you rarely have to touch your case.

John Torode

The Master Chef BY A N G E L A K E L LY

IF ever there was a guest to whom you would be distinctly nervous at serving your home-made vegetable lasagne John Torode is probably it. It’s not that the MasterChef judge and food expert would be automatically rude about your efforts – he’d probably be sparing in his remarks. It’s simply that he would only have to fix you with that so-familiar steely glare for you to realise that there was a chance your food might not pass his strict standards. All of which is probably both what you would expect from a renowned foodie and from a high-profile cookery guru used to imparting the judgement of Solomon when it comes to individual would-be chefs and their creations.

Doing your own cookbook is a personal catalogue of life, and I’m very lucky to have done it. catapulted the likeable Aussie into the nation’s consciousness as the go-to expert opinion on good and bad dishes. Born in Melbourne, John Torode’s early interest in cooking led him to work as an apprentice in restaurants around his home city. He began his cooking career formally at the age of 16 by attending catering college, and then – like many young and ambitious Antipodeans before him and since - moved to the UK in 1991. A year later, he began working at Le Pont de la Tour and Quaglino’s as a sous chef for the Conran Group under Terence Conran. It’s also where he first met fellow MasterChef judge Greg Wallace, whose company supplied the vegetables for the restaurant. John’s reputation grew swiftly and this, combined with an engaging manner, soon prompted him to become the regular chef on ITV’s This Morning show from 1996 until 2000.

But, of course, it’s also what helps make TV’s MasterChef and Celebrity MasterChef such compelling viewing. And what has 18

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

It goes without saying that he’s a big fan of cooking from scratch, but I wondered how important he felt food was in bringing people generally - and the generations in particular together. “Everyone in the world has to eat,” he stated. “Sitting with friends and family is vital. It is where conversation happens and knowledge is shared. It’s where values and morals are learnt. It’s important, really important.” And what kinds of culinary expertise can be learned from older people? “With age comes wisdom and with wisdom comes calm,” he said. “The older the cook, the more confident and more knowledgeable they are. “Just watch an old Chinese chef through the windows in China town and that will teach you more than you would ever think possible.”

John Torode with fans. His 1998 cookery book The Mezzo Cookbook won the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Food Photography – something he is happy to accept as a highlight of his career so far. “Getting the chance to write a book is a pretty special thing,” he explained, “be it my first one at Mezzo or my latest My Kind of Food. Doing your own cookbook is a personal catalogue of life, and I’m very lucky to have done it.” In 2000, John opened his first London restaurant, called Smiths of Smithfields. The BBC show MasterChef was being re-launched with an updated format, and Torode and Wallace were chosen as the new presenters. This entertaining combination helped create a winning formula and by 2011, the show had been sold to 25 countries. Perhaps it was always the unscripted nature of the show, combined with the kitchen banter of Torode and Wallace, but viewers across the world were fascinated by what MasterChef had become. The spin-offs – Celebrity MasterChef and Junior MasterChef – also became hits and John continued his restaurateur success, opening another capital venue called The Luxe, near New Spitalfields Market. Last year, he fronted John Torode’s Australia – the highest rating TV show of the year on UKTV Good Food Channel - retracing the flavours of his childhood, and this year he presented A Cook Abroad: John Torode’s Argentina for BBC2. While he is now a familiar face on TV, I asked him how anglicised he had become after so many years living in the UK and what Australian traits he still retained. “My brothers and Aussie mates think I sound like a pom!” he told me. “But I feel as Aussie as I always have. I love my Australian passport and, of course, the cricket and the rugby – where I will always side with the Aussies!”

As for how influential cookery programmes like MasterChef have been in improving the standard of British cookery, John Torode is very definite. “The more that people watch MasterChef and similar programmes, the more knowledge they have,” he added. “The knock-on effect is that the public become more demanding and worldly wise. “I think the shows are quite influential. Restaurants and eateries of all kinds have sprung up everywhere in the UK, and the standard has to be high or they do not survive!” So what makes a MasterChef winner? “Tenacity and real want,” explained John. “Being a good cook is one thing, but wanting to feed people without an ego is a rare thing and something all the MasterChef winners have had. “They are people without egos, who love to watch people smile because their food is delicious.” As to what culinary disasters the TV audiences doesn’t see, the famous presenter asserted: “None. You get to see everything – including Gregg’s dancing!” And who has been your favourite Celebrity MasterChef contestant? “Now that would be a little unfair …. But I do, however, have a soft spot for Lisa Faulkner!” As for what the future holds for him and whether he would like to appear in any other kind of TV programme, John was happy to elucidate. “To travel the world, discover and cook is what I want to do. “So take me anywhere and point a camera in my face and I would be as happy as Larry! I have just got back from filming in Malaysia and that was awesome.” And that tempting morsel of information about what comes next for our culinary hero has only whetted our appetites for future appearances of the man who has helped encourage thousands of would-be cooks in their own kitchens. Even when vegetable lasagne is on the menu.

John’s latest book is My Kind of Food: Recipes I Love To Cook at Home by John Torode, published by Headline on September 10 at £25. 19

Paint radiators the same colour as the walls for a cohesive look. Alternatively, they can be boxed in if you don’t want them to show. And if you’re using pattern in fabrics or wallpaper, think about scale and colour continuity. Take a look at home interior magazines and see what is currently in favour when it comes to themes and designs. “I love botanical designs,” says Sharon, “and they seem to be popular this year. There are some lovely floral and leafy prints available to bring a fresh look to any room.” Investing in new furniture will always change a room, but if you’re on a budget you can instantly refresh and update your lounge with new cushions and throws which can be colour-matched to your chosen décor. “Neutral décor can and want to make it appear shorter, paint the short wall furthest away in a darker colour. The hallway is a high traffic area so carpets aren’t always the best choice here. Try hard or wooden floor surfaces but soften them with a runner or rug, which can work well

be brought to life by layering different textures, adding rugs and using reflective surfaces such as glass-topped tables and mirrors which give a sense of space.” Don’t dismiss buying second-hand furniture out of hand. Try flea markets, car boots or charity shops. “You can pick up

against plain-coloured walls. The LOUNGE is often a central spot for day to day life but if you’re having a revamp and want to invest in new furniture, draw a rough floor- plan of your room first, advises Sharon, measuring furniture to ensure it fits. “Think about access and how you’re going to get into the room,” she adds. “This will save time and one big headache.”

Do you have any serviceable unwanted furniture? FURNITURE DONATIONS: We collect unwanted, re-usable furniture FREE of charge from any household within the Bolton borough.

Sharon also believes that most of us are too scared to try out colour and so often end up with large amounts of neutral décor. “Using colour is about confidence,” she states. “Try using a colour wheel and/or paint manufacturers’ swatches to choose the right colour combination. Colour inspiration comes from all sorts of sources – artwork, photographs, a favourite piece of fabric or nature.” It’s also worth keeping in mind that colour looks different throughout the day and under artificial light. “Buy swatch pots and paint lining paper with your chosen colours and place them on the wall. Move around during different times of the day, and look at it under artificial lighting.” If you’re choosing patterned wallpaper, match the pattern and place the two pieces side by side on the wall to see

The DINING ROOM is best kept practical, particularly if it doubles as a study or office. Choose furniture that adapts, such as an extending dining table and folding chairs. Shelves and cupboards are perfect for display and storage, and add a pop of the colour red here and there – “It’s said to promote conversation and appetite!” adds Sharon. If you’re investing in new units for your BEDROOM, make sure they suit your lifestyle and provide plenty of space and storage. Soft grey can be a restful and relaxing colour for bedrooms, with splashes of colour added for contrast in quilt covers, lampshades, rugs and draped curtains. Table lamps add mood and ambience to this space. And another place for relaxation is the BATHROOM. Soothing greens and blues are always a good choice here although keep sanitary ware white for a clean look. If your bathroom is small, try using larger floor and wall tiles as they make the space look bigger (plain not patterned) as do mirrors or mirrored vanity cupboards.

BRITISH BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES FAMILY CAMPAIGN INSPIRED BY WINNIE-THE-POOH AND FRIENDS TO HELP SAVE THE BEES

London, 25 June, 2015: England’s honey bees are still in trouble – that’s the verdict of a new study from the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA), which has launched a unique ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ campaign inspired by Winnie-the-Pooh and friends. The campaign, which has been created in partnership with Egmont Publishing - the publisher of the classic Winniethe-Pooh stories - aims to publicise the threats to Britain’s honey bee population. The famous characters feature in a newly created ‘beefriendly’ guide that highlights simple and fun activities for families to do together over the summer in the great outdoors to help our honey bees. It is available in print as part of the BBKA’s ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ member pack, or free to download from www. friendsofthehoneybee.com. The BBKA annual study surveyed 900 British beekeepers selected at random, to establish the impact that last winter has had on honey bee colonies. Nationally, colony losses were 14.5% last winter, continuing the declines observed over the last three years. There were regional variations*: the West (-18%), North East (-15.5%) and Eastern regions of England (-14.7%) being the areas that have seen the biggest drops. This year’s loss rose by over 50% in comparison to last year (9.6% in 2013/14), and despite not being as high as the decline rate in 2012/13 (33.8%), the results show that colony losses remain at an unacceptably high level. Poor and variable weather, bee diseases and pests such as Varroa, and starvation due to lack of honey stored in the hive are all suspected to have contributed to the decline – underlining the importance of plenty of good nectar and pollen forage being available for honey bees, throughout the year.

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

And although three out of five (63%) British adults are aware that honey bees are on the decline and 86% understand the vital part that honey bees play in the health of the environment, two-thirds (67%) have little or no idea of what they can do to help, according to supporting research amongst 2,000 British adults and children. To help families understand the part they can play, the new ‘bee –friendly’ guide includes a brand new short story and ten simple activities to support British honey bees - all featuring Winnie-thePooh and friends in various parts of England, lovingly drawn by illustrator Mark Burgess, who coloured the original E.H Shepherd black & white art and the latest book ‘Return to the Hundred Acre Wood’. The consumer research also provided an insight into the next generation’s views about care of the environment. Over four out of five (83%) British children aged 5-10 believe it is important to look after our environment. However less than a quarter (22%) of children are aware of any steps they could take in order to help save the honey bees –

although three quarters (76%) would like to help if they were told the honey bee was struggling to survive. David Aston, President of The British Beekeepers Association says: “While many people are aware of the plight of the honey bee, there are many that don’t know what they can do to help. We hope that by supporting our ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ initiative with the brand new guide inspired by Winnie-thePooh, families across the country can get involved, making a practical contribution and supporting bee health research.” Commenting on the partnership, Nicole Pearson, Associate Publisher from Egmont Publishing said: “Winnie-thePooh is famed for his love of honey, so who better to encourage families to get out and about and take part in fun activities that can help support our honey bees. We’re very excited to be working with the BBKA to support such a worthwhile cause.” For more information on supporting the honey bee and to download the ‘bee-friendly’ guide inspired by Winnie-the-Pooh and friends visit www.friendsofthehoneybee.com

WINNIE-THE-POOH’S 10 SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP SAVE THE BEES, AS RECOMMENDED BY THE BBKA*** 1. Plant your own window box 2. Create your own vegetable patch or tub together 3. Plant a flowering tree in your garden 3. Make some ‘seed balls’ and throw them into the wild 5. Use arts and crafts to educate the younger generation on the importance of bees e.g. finger puppets, painting bee pictures, knitting bees etc. 6. Learn to become a beekeeper yourself by attending a course through the British Beekeepers Association 7. Bake together at home using local honey 8. Build habitats 9. Volunteer for your local beekeepers association or visit your local apiary 10. Don’t panic, if you see a honey bee swarm, contact your local beekeeping association. ***Further information on the activities to help save the bees is available in Winnie-the-Pooh’s ‘bee-friendly’ guide – available to download free from www. friendsofthehoneybee.com 35

HEALTH

Qualified doctor and the UK’s most trusted parenting expert Dr Miriam Stoppard tackles your problems. Q&A 1 Question: Two years ago I had breast cancer and fortunately the treatment worked and I’m cured. To add to my joy I’ve become a grandmother for the first time but my partner is really jealous of my grandson. Can you believe it, a grown man? Answer: Don’t let his jealousy spoil things. Your brush with cancer and the birth of your grandson have emphasised the importance of family so I think it’s unfair that your partner is setting himself up in competition with them. But I suspect he’s fighting his own demons, worrying your cancer might come back, making him greedy for all your time and attention. Think of things from your partner’s point of view. Can you do more to make him feel appreciated and loved in your daily life? You could try to be a little less preoccupied with your grandson so that he doesn’t feel rejected? Could you plan a few treats together, just the two of you? Q&A 2 Question: I’ve just had the shock of my life! My daughter-inlaw has confessed to me that my oldest granddaughter isn’t my son’s biological child. She’s made me promise to keep her secret and I’ve agreed. They have two beautiful girls aged 14 and 11. I love both girls with all my heart and I’m especially close to the eldest. I don’t know what to think. Answer: It’s no wonder you’re in shock. Your daughter-inlaw has been keeping a mighty big secret and she must have a lot of faith in you to trust you with the truth. This type of family secret isn’t rare. You would be surprised to know how many people are, like your granddaughter, not the offspring of the man who raised them. This news doesn’t have to destroy your relationship with your grandchild. Already your special bond transcends any blood tie. She’ll still be your granddaughter and your love for her won’t change, unless that’s what you want, which I’m sure you don’t. Q&A 3 Question: My son resents me because I’m the manager of a large supermarket and earn decent money – money I spend on all my grandchildren, including his two. My wife and I have taken them on holiday abroad and for weekends

36

to Disneyland Paris and other places, and he’s accused me of trying to buy their love. My wife says he’s upset because he’s unemployed and I shouldn’t take his animosity personally. I want to do the right thing by my grandchildren, but his constant surliness is taking the shine off our fun times together. What’s the best way to handle him? Answer: Your son-in-law may feel there’s something of a power struggle going on between you two for his child’s respect and he’s losing. You’re a generous man who gets pleasure from seeing your grandchildren’s happy faces, but his unemployed status is making him insecure. Right now you’ve got it all: good job and the money to be their fairy grandfather. Perhaps you should back off with the big spending for a while and find activities for you and the children to enjoy that don’t require a fat chequebook. This should take the heat off him and the competitive spirit out of your relationship, but you can still enjoy fun times with your grandchildren. Q&A 4 Question: I’m always nagging my grandchildren to wash their hands after going to the lavatory but they don’t take any notice. No one seems to bother anymore. How do I get my grandchildren to be more hygienic? Answer: You’re a voice in the wilderness. Your grandchildren will only get into the habit of washing their hands after going to the loo if they’re encouraged to do so at home too. You might try telling their parents that the

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

latest research from Queen Mary University, London found faecal contamination on one in four of the hands that they tested. In fact one in 10 were so “grossly contaminated” that they had levels of bacteria you would expect to find in a dirty lavatory bowl. This is deeply shocking and means just one thing - it’s not only your grandchildren who aren’t washing their hands. Everyone needs to wash their hands after going to the loo. Q&A 5 Question: My new grandson has Down’s syndrome and I don’t know how to come to terms with the situation. I don’t feel like a real grandmother and I’m so unhappy I often cry myself to sleep. What can I do? Answer: You can have a lovely future getting to know your grandson and I urge you to start right away. A life is a life and a baby with Down’s syndrome has exactly the same right as any other child to the best life possible. That means being loved, cherished, cared for, and educated, and being as normal as possible. Children with Down’s syndrome have many winning ways: they’re happy, do well in mainstream school with special attention and teaching and some enjoy independent life. Instead of crying and complaining, aim to be your grandson’s biggest fan, coach, and cheerleader. Step outside your reluctance to be a real granny to him and be proud of him and his achievements. Start thinking about your grandson instead of yourself and find out as much as you can about how to help him.

Dr Miriam Stoppard, a grandparent herself, has developed a range of 21 developmental toys for baby’s first year and beyond. The Dr Miriam @ Galt range, available from Galt Toys, encourages learning through play, with each toy boasting a host of engaging features for little hands and minds to explore. For a great day out with your grandchild why not visit the Octagon Theatre. The BFG by Roald Dahl is presented between 13 Nov - 19 Jan 2016.

Q&A 6 Question: My grandson is seven years old and is running 5km races. His younger brother seems to be getting the bug as well. Their dad has always been a runner and regularly does half marathons. But I think seven is too young. Don’t you? Answer: Since the Olympics the trend for running has soared in all age groups and this applies to children as young as your grandsons. But beware the mindset that the farther a child can run the better. UK Athletics (UKA) states that children must be at least 11 to take part in a 5km road race and that’s the maximum distance permitted for that age. A child has to be 15 to run a 10km race on the road. I feel provided younger children aren’t put under any undue pressure to win then to run in Park Runs is OK. It’s worth knowing that children probably benefit more from short bursts of exercise at primary school age. The kind of high intensity, sporadic exercise they do in the playground. Parents must be careful that too much running too young isn’t detrimental to their children.

BE HAPPY BE HEALTHY BE ACTIVE Exercise is the miracle cure we’ve always had, but have we neglected to take our recommended dose for too long? We hear about the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle on a daily basis and are aware of the benefits. However, how many of us can hand on heart say that we are active enough to really make a difference to our health? Ultimately it is only ourselves that will feel the effects of leading a sedentary lifestyle in later life. Simply doing daily chores such as shopping, cooking or housework don’t count towards recommended levels of physical activity. Whatever your age, there’s strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and even happier life. Some of the many benefits of regular exercise include... • Reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50%. • Prevent high blood pressure. • Lower raised blood pressure and cholesterol levels. • Reduced stress levels. • Weight loss and body toning. • Increased strength and suppleness. • Increased self esteem, energy levels and sleep quality. • Meet new people, have fun, exercise and socialise. Are you active enough to benefit your health? To stay healthy or to improve health, older adults need to do two types of physical activity each week: aerobic and musclestrengthening activity. Aerobic exercise includes activities such as cycling, fast walking, swimming and jogging. Moderate-intensity aerobic activity means you’re working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat. One way to tell if you’re working at a moderate intensity is if you can still talk but you can’t sing the words to a song. Muscle-strengthening exercise includes activities such as weight lifting, yoga and exercises that use your body weight for resistance. Muscle-strengthening exercise involves working all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms). It is recommended that adults aged 19 – 64 should do 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of physical activity every week. A good way to approach this is to do 30 minutes activity on at least 5 days a week.

Implanting

confidence

Ann Knight was so impressed with her husband’s new dental implants that she turned to the same expert team – and the retired business duo from Cheshire are delighted with the results! Leading the way in UK implant technology is Lancashire-based Douglas Lee, who was one of the first dentists in the country to adopt the highly successful pioneering ‘Fast and Fixed’ technique. Highly experienced in this same-day implant procedure, Douglas Lee Dental Associates, have a team of professionals, including in-house dental technicians, to replace teeth permanently – omitting the need for dentures. It was Douglas Lee’s national reputation for excellence that originally led Barry and Ann Knight to the practice two years ago. Barry was referred to Douglas Lee by another implant dentist who had attempted to replace Barry’s top 40

teeth, which had been damaged by a serious car accident, with implants. Barry explains: “The original implants were loose, they weren’t right so the dentist said he could not go any further with it and referred me to Douglas Lee. “I travelled over from our home in Cheshire to see Dougie and he immediately said he would be able to help but he was totally honest and said it would take some time. In the lead up to the ‘Fast and Fixed’ day Dougie and the team were fantastic. It’s not like going to the dentist, it’s like visiting a friend. They explained everything so I wasn’t at all nervous about the procedure. www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

I had got to know them and it is obvious that they are experts in their field,” adds Barry, who is now retired from his manufacturing business. Implant expert Douglas Lee explained what would be necessary and reassured Barry that the problem could be fixed. On the day of the procedure Barry arrived at Douglas Lee Dental Associates early in the morning. Sedated, Barry was painlessly fitted with a completely new set of upper implants in a procedure that has made Douglas Lee Dental Associates a flagship practice and a teaching surgery for the German pioneered ‘Fast and Fixed’ technique. “To become a teaching surgery for ‘Fast and Fixed’ is a real compliment. It is a massive boost to us and it gives us the chance to show other dentists what can be achieved,” says Dougie. Testament to their high level of skills, Douglas Lee Dental Associates were the first team in the UK to carry out a full set of upper and lower jaw implants within a day. During their years of experience, the team has refined the procedure and have state-of-the-art in-house technology including a Cone beam CT scanner, a Helbo laser that eradicates over 99 per cent of harmful bacteria and an on-site dental lab with a technician who custom makes the teeth implants so patients can benefit from this amazing same-day procedure. Preparation is key to the success and the team of dental nurses, cosmetic dentist Usman Riaz, dental technicians and Dougie himself, all play their part on the day. www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

Sedation ensures that no pain is felt and the patient remains relaxed. “I didn’t feel a thing,” says Barry. “It was a long day and I was a bit tired but it was completely painless. I had slight bruising afterwards but that soon disappeared – and the implants are fantastic! “They feel like my own teeth, the sensitivity is still there when you are biting and chewing. I am thrilled with them and I can’t thank Dougie and the team enough.” Barry’s wife Ann underwent major dental work around 30 years ago, however her teeth were beginning to fail and she was too nervous to consult her dentist. “Barry told me I had to go and see Dougie, so I plucked up the courage and went. I was adamant that I wanted a good set of dentures as there was no way I was going to undergo any pain with implants,” recalls Ann. When she went to see the team at Douglas Lee Dental Associates, Ann was told, following an x-ray, that the news was not good. Her gums were in bad shape and she had several failing teeth. I have always looked after myself and losing my teeth was my idea of hell. It was a terrible shock. Dougie said I wouldn’t like dentures but left the decision totally to me. “He explained the procedure and reassured me it would be pain free so I eventually made the decision and said ‘yes’.”

In Ann’s case, she was so delighted with the results in her upper jaw that shortly before Christmas, she had her lower set of implants done under the same ‘Fast and Fixed’ procedure. “When I looked in the mirror and smiled it was unbelievable!” recalls an emotional Ann. “I have always covered my mouth when I smiled because of my teeth, but now I smile all the time as it has given me so much confidence. “They don’t look fake, or overly white, they just look totally natural and I am thrilled! I am 110 per cent happy with them – and I told Dougie and the team that I don’t take this for granted, I am very grateful to them all.”

...plans and planning together as one or both of you enters this phase of your life is essential...

Planning for Retirement Retirement in 2015 means different things to different people with each perception as individual as they are. Many may have looked forward to retirement for years as the natural end to a satisfying career – or the welcome finish to a job they’ve hated. They look on the lack of someone else’s superimposed routine, the unstructured days and the more relaxed lifestyle as halcyon days ahead. And, indeed, this

42

is often the case for many people who have had the foresight to plan ahead to ensure that retirement gives you exactly what you want. Early financial planning may certainly be the key to that golden retirement, provided you take a realistic look at your day-to-day living expenses and ensure that you have enough money to cover everything. It’s also worth, though, factoring in other, perhaps less obvious potential expenses, like needing transport if you’re not well enough to get around under your own steam, or having some extra available for unforeseen situations.

If you can, look at your living costs up to 10 years before you actually retire and allow for extra increased utilities, bills and possibly more frequent holidays. On the other hand, you can exclude bills like travel to and from work and, possibly, mortgage payments. It’s worth adding your pensions together to see if there is a shortfall. Consult past providers or employers for up-to-date pension statements and get a forecast of your State Pension through the Government’s pension site www.gov.uk/contact-pension-service See if you can save more, perhaps paying in more, and monitor whether your current savings are working hard enough. Check out the new autoenrolment scheme as it’s also usually worth starting. Up to five years before retirement, look at moving any stock market investments, including pensions, to safer havens to avoid losing out in case of any last-minute falls. Check your National Insurance contributions are up to date, track down any old pensions or other accounts and start investigating Annuities.

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

Six months before retirement, check your final pension and how it will be paid to you. Major changes are now in place relating to how you can take your pension; again, go to the gov.uk site to find out more. Make an appointment with a specialist Independent Financial Adviser for advice on getting the most income out of your pensions. Either go on personal recommendation from someone you know well or go to the Association of Professional Advisers (APFA) to find one at www.apfa.net Consider your daily running expenses and see what you can shave off and still enjoy life. Look at where you live – do you want to downsize and is this more realistic financially? Get expert advice on these life-changing decisions at the Age UK website www.ageuk.org.uk Psychotherapist Anne Marie Alger warns that, although retirement is seen as a positive new life phase by some, for others there is a loss of role, loss of structure to the Anne Marie Alger Psychotherapist day, week or year, loss of financial security and a loss of work friendships, contact and companionship. “Although leaving work is supposed to remove us from the stress and anxiety, adverse effects can quickly increase, particularly if your social life is very much tied up with work,” she explains. “Retirement can have a detrimental effect on both mental and physical health. Indeed, there has been a drive towards Work Longer Live Healthier – a study illustrating the link between economic activity, health and Government policy, suggesting that in the long term, retirement can be ‘bad’ for your health. “What happens if you’re not ‘ready’ to finish work, and it feels enforced, or you don’t feel prepared? Does it raise a question of ‘who am I now if so much of your life has been tied up with your employment, your job role,

your position, hand in hand with your confidence, your value and your selfworth?” There are also the expectations of those around you to cope with now that you have “all this time on your hands.” Are you now perceived as a carer, a childcare provider, and will there be increased demands from family and friends about how you spend your time? All these factors can become the everdarkening cloud that moves across your lovely, bright retirement sky and dims it substantially. However ….. we are back to planning here and how you can banish that cloud forever. Anne Marie points out that, for couples “plans and planning together as one or both of you enters this phase of your life is essential, so that you can communicate your wishes, needs and desires effectively.” She advises planning for the potential challenges “but also plan for the pleasurable things in life so that you are making time for you to do what you want to do.”

The only fencing you need... Are you fed up with painting your fence year in year out with expensive treatments? Well now you do not have to, as this amazing Colourfence is maintenance free and never needs painting. Steve Beaumont is running the only firm which offers Colourfence in the Bury and Bolton area. This is great news for homeowners who have become tired of the costly, timeconsuming and never-ending upkeep involved in timber fencing. Colourfence is the smart choice for long-lasting, low-maintenance fencing which comes with a 25 year guarantee and the builtin strength to withstand harsh climates including wind gusts of up to 130 miles per hour. Over the past 10 years, Colourfence has altered the way in which gardens can be fenced, and it is now available locally. Just imagine, for the price of a comparable quality timber fence, you could have a fence that’s professionally installed, will stay in place no matter what, and requires no more work than the occasional hose down with water to keep it looking as good as new. Creosote, fence paint, wood stain — all things of the past with Colourfence, so it’s time for the fence brush to be consigned to the dustbin. All surveys and installations are handled by Steve and his team, who promise an honest and friendly evaluation of your fences, and a noobligation, no-strings attached quote. Not only will a Colourfence product provide the perfect backdrop to your garden all year round and perfect privacy from prying neighbours’ eyes, it will also give the peace of mind of having a most secure boundary to your property. With 80 per cent of burglaries taking place after access through garden fences, according to Steve this has to be an added bonus which can’t be ignored.

Timber fences need annual upkeep and painting, and yet they will age, spoil and need replacing within a matter of years.

A good-looking & well maintained fence enhances the appearance of your garden as well as improving security & safety for your family

Steve, who has more than 40 years’ business experience, said:“This is great news for the people of Bury, Bolton and the surrounding areas as Colourfence is a premium fencing solution at affordable prices, choosing the product line is a no-brainer. “There’s virtually no maintenance, and it offers so much more strength and durability than timber fences,” he said. “We offer a no-nonsense, all-in price which includes installation by ourselves. “Combined with the cost and guarantees, this means that Colourfence is much better value than timber in the long term.”

Colourfence, on the other hand, is made of a strong Colorbond steel, with a special anti-corrosion layer that won’t scratch or rust, topped with a special coating, primer and a beautiful finish coat in four colours to choose from. Matching railings and gates are also available, which are guaranteed not to rust of flake for 10 years. Colourfence built its business model on ethical trading, and promises that it will never use hard-sell methods. Steve said: “We just arrange a friendly meeting to see how we can help customers make a great choice in fencing. “This includes an honest and straightforward survey of the garden and fences. We show the customer a range of photographs and samples, and offer a no-obligation, no-pressure quotation. “The benefits of the products are such that we just don’t need to ‘sell’ them.”

‘Best Ever Roast Chicken’ and ‘Beef Rendang with Lemongrass and Ginger’ BEST EVER ROAST CHICKEN (CHOOK) Oh, oh, oh, I am the biggest sucker for chicken. I am an even bigger sucker for chicken that has a good stuffing. For those who like to cook delicious food but keep it simple, this is a gem, as the potatoes, stuffing and chicken are all ready to eat at once, and the juices left behind make the best-ever gravy. Heat the oven to 180°C (gas 4). Chop all the herbs roughly and mix them with the softened butter, salt and pepper. Fill the chickens with your preferred stuffing and place onethird of the herb butter in the end cavity of each chicken so the butter melts inside the bird. Place a high-sided roasting tin over a high heat and add the oil. Drop in the potatoes and shake well to coat them in oil. Put the chickens in with the potatoes, pushing them out of the way. Place the roasting tray in the oven and leave to cook for 35 minutes without opening the door. Remove the tray from the oven and increase the temperature to 190°C (gas 5). Turn the potatoes over and baste the birds well, spooning the pan juices over the breasts. Return to the oven and leave to cook for a further 40 minutes, at which point the chicken and potatoes should be done. 48

AN AWARD-WINNING scheme showing people how to cook healthy meals is back.

BEEF RENDANG WITH LEMONGRASS AND GINGER This is a Muslim dish from Sumatra in Indonesia. By the time the big pot of liquid has cooked down to a kind of beef in jam, the meat is fabulously tender and melting. Shank is, for me, the very best cut to use here. The pot you use needs to be wide rather than deep, so that the liquid can evaporate as the beef cooks. Pound the lemongrass to a pulp using a mortar and pestle. Gently toast the coriander and cumin seeds with the turmeric in a dry frying pan until fragrant, then grind to a powder (or pound with the mortar and pestle). In a wide pan (I use a cast-iron wok), heat the block of coconut cream until it melts—keep the heat low so it does not burn. Drop in the onions, garlic, chillies, ginger and pounded lemongrass. Cook gently until the onions have softened and the mixture starts to smell fragrant. Bolton Add the ground spices and bay leaves and fry for a few more minutes until the mixture is really aromatic.Council Add the meat and increase the heat so it browns well all over, stirring to coat with the spices. Add the coconut milk and bring to a boil, then add the hot stock. Turn the heat up to high and continue cooking, stirring occasionally. The sauce will reduce to a thick paste and then will become thick like lava, really coating the meat—this will take at least an hour. Serve the rendang with sticky rice.

YOU WILL NEED: 2 lemongrass stalks 1/3 cup coriander seeds 1 tsp. cumin seeds 1 tsp. ground turmeric 4oz block coconut cream 3 large onions, minced 6 garlic cloves, chopped 6 fresh red chillies, seeds removed and chopped Image for illustration purposes only

2 thumb-sized pieces fresh ginger, peeled and chopped 2 bay leaves 3 lb. beef for stew, cut into 1-inch cubes 2 cans (14oz. each) coconut milk 2 cups strong veal or beef stock, heated Council Sticky (glutinous) rice for serving

Award winning chef Lewis Gallagher shares his thoughts with us as he embarks on the next stage of his successful career as Head Chef at Provenance Food Hall and Restaurant... So much potential. That was my first impression upon walking into the building in the middle of the high street in Westhoughton and to be a part of it is an exciting prospect. The format of the business is something that as a chef is a dream come true; good produce and good food all under one roof. Working closely with the owners of Provenance our aim is to provide the best, at the best possible price. I have worked with some great chefs and have gained experience in some

great restaurants. After winning the Acorn Scholarship I was highly encouraged to go to London because that’s our “food capital”. It has always been a passion of mine to be one of the chefs that brings that standard to the north, and Provenance certainly provides the tools and the platform to allow us to do so. The team that we have in place is driven, motivated and passionate about what they do and this will be reflected on the plates in the restaurant and in counters in the shop downstairs. We have a unique opportunity to engage with customers where we can share our experience as cooks and also offer valuable insight on how we use our ingredients in the best possible way.

We will certainly be looking to cement ourselves amongst the go to places in the region, both to eat and to shop. It’s an exciting prospect and I personally can’t wait to get started.

Fish and chips with pea purée and tartare sauce

Sometimes the simple classics are the best. Take your time to get this right and you will have a world-class dish! Halibut is the ideal fish to use, but any good quality white flat fish will be fine. You need the best quality brand of frozen petis pois for this recipe. Anything else will give a grainy texture – so don’t skimp on your peas! At my pub we always serve our fish and chips with round chips simply because they look more interesting.

Tom Kerridge SERVES 4

4 halibut fillets, about 180g each sea salt flakes, to taste table salt, to taste lemon wedges, to serve – wrap them in muslin if you want to posh this up

FOR THE CHIPS

4 large potatoes for chipping, such as Maris piper vegetable oil for deep-frying

FOR THE TARTARE SAUCE

3 egg yolks 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 4 teaspoons white wine vinegar 500ml vegetable oil 2 hard-boiled eggs, shelled and grated 1 shallot, finely chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped gherkins 2 tablespoons capers in brine, drained and finely chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley leaves

FOR THE BEER BATTER 2 egg whites 240ml beer or sparkling water 350g self-raising white flour large pinch of bicarbonate of soda

FOR THE PEA PURÉE

25g butter 1 shallot, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon sea salt flakes 100ml chicken stock 1 tablespoon finely chopped mint leaves 350g frozen peas, defrosted 4 teaspoons caster sugar

To make thick chips, top and tail each potato, then use an apple corer to cut out the centres. Remember, we are making round chips here. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil over a high heat. Add the potatoes, return the water to the boil and boil for about 5 minutes until tender, but still holding their shapes. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the water and leave them to drain. Dry well on a wire rack. When the potatoes are completely dry, heat enough oil for deep-frying in a deep-fat fryer or heavy-based saucepan until it reaches 140°C. Add the potatoes and fry for 8–10 minutes until the oil stops bubbling, which means all the moisture has been removed.

Your perfect recipe needs top quality ingredients...

Use a slotted spoon to remove the potatoes from the oil, return them to the wire rack and leave to cool completely. Meanwhile, make the tartare sauce. Place the egg yolks, Dijon mustard and white wine vinegar in a food processor and blend until smooth. With the motor still running, slowly add the oil until the mixture emulsifies and thickens. Stir in the remaining ingredients and season. Cover and keep in the fridge until needed. To make the pea purée, melt the butter in a saucepan over a low heat. Add the shallots and sea salt and fry, stirring occasionally, for at least 5 minutes until softened, but not coloured. Add the chicken stock and mint and bring to the boil. Add the peas and sugar, return the stock to the boil and boil for 5–6 minutes until the peas are tender. Strain the peas and shallots over a bowl to catch the liquid, then transfer them to a blender. Add 2 tablespoons of the cooking liquid and blend until smooth, but not too thin. Adjust the seasoning with table salt, if necessary, then set aside and keep hot. To make the batter, mix the egg whites and beer together until fluffy. Mix the flour and bicarbonate of soda together in a large bowl and add the egg-white mix.

Bury Market, winner of BBC Radio 4’s Food and Farming Awards (Best Food Market) really has it all.

Just before you are ready to fry the fish, fry the potatoes for a second time. Reheat the oil to 180°C.

With over 350 stalls open every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday you will find our friendly traders sell everything you need for making delicious home-cooked meals.

Add the potatoes to the fryer again and fry for 2–3 minutes until crispy and golden brown. Drain well on kitchen paper, sprinkle with salt and keep hot in a low oven. Reheat the oil to 180°C, if necessary. Dip the fish into the batter, letting any excess drip back into the bowl, then add to the oil and fry for 3–5 minutes until crispy and golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper. Keep the fried fillets warm in the low oven until they are all fried, but do not cover them with kitchen paper. Sprinkle with sea salt flakes and serve immediately with the chips, pea purée and tartare sauce and lemon wedges for squeezing over.

Cap on Care Fees is Only Part of a New Style of Caring Government plans to introduce a £72,000 cap on paying for care fees have been shelved amid concerns over the perilous state of council social care budgets. The new payment system, which was due to come into force in April 2016, has now been put back to 2020.

Currently, the elderly and younger adults with disabilities have to pay for their care; whether that’s round-theclock help in a care home or support with tasks such as washing and dressing in their own home. Anyone with less than £23,250 in savings and, in some cases, the value of a home receives help toward their care costs. This, however, doesn’t include living costs such as food, bills and accommodation, for which people will still be liable to the tune of £230 a week.

The idea behind the cap was that once a person had spent £72,000 on their care, the state would step in to pay. The problem is that without a substantially funded council care system, pressure on local authorities will become financially crippling.

Although speculation as to the fate of the cap has gone into overdrive, the government says it’s still committed to putting a limit on how much people will be required to pay. “There’s concern in some quarters that the delay may actually spell the end for the changes, but this isn’t true”, says Judith Bromley, head of wills and probate at Russell and Russell Solicitors. “It’s just the finances that are being delayed.”

The government had hoped the insurance sector would seize the opportunity by offering products, but this hasn’t happened. With local authorities already struggling to cope with black holes in their budgets, parliament has pulled the plug while it examines other options for paying for care.

60

But it’s not all about money. Hailed as the solution to demystifying outdated and complex legislation, the revised Care Act seeks to cut through red tape to make the process of getting help with care much more transparent and accessible.

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

Judith’s view is that aside from the monetary aspect, the other four pillars to the Act, which were introduced in April this year, are far more central to the essence of what the Act aims to achieve and these haven’t been blocked. Firstly, the government has adopted the Socrates approach; prevention is better than a cure. Local authorities will be required to provide services aimed at maintaining people’s health to reduce or delay the need for care or support in the first place. Clearer information and fairer access to care is another key ingredient to the new changes. Local authorities will now have a duty to ensure care and support is available to everyone when they need it. In cases where people are unable to understand the care system, assistance must be provided. The changes also incorporate a common system across the country. Previously, access to care has been a lottery with each local authority being able to apply its own financial eligibility thresholds. The consequence of this has resulted in varying levels of entitlement depending on where people live. Under the new rules, anyone, including carers, who need support, will receive an assessment. The individual’s physical, mental, emotional wellbeing and any needs already being met by a carer, must be taken into consideration, so that support is built around their needs and wants and how they can be best cared for, along with a commitment to regularly review it. On completion of the assessment, the local authority can refer to the nationally aligned threshold to determine whether the individual has eligible needs. Additionally, all local authorities will be required to adopt a joined up approach to social care by collaborating with other public bodies, such as health and housing, as well as external organisations so that people don’t ‘slip through the cracks’. This vision also extends to ensuring a seamless transition for young people to move into adult social care services. Finally, safeguarding forms the final piece of the jigsaw. The new statuary framework aims to protect adults from neglect and abuse and stipulates that there should be a diverse range of high quality care services for people to choose from. If a care services provider fails, local authorities have a duty to intervene to ensure a person is not left without care. There is no doubt the reforms to the Care Act have been designed to promote good practice by personalising care to the individual rather than focussing on the masses. As Judith concludes: “The essence of the changes is to ensure wellbeing and quality of life, so people shouldn’t get hung up on the financial cap. Unfortunately, it’s what most believe the Care Act to be about, but this element only forms a small part of the changes. Whereas previously it’s tended to be a one size fits all approach, the new legislation will fundamentally change the way local authorities deal with caring for people.”

Take a trip to the award winning Bolton Market Ashburner Street, Bolton BL1 1TJ

WE HAVE CERTAINLY BEEN OUT AND ABOUT! Judith Bromley Chairman of Bolton Hospice and PARTNER AT Russell& Russell solicitors and close friend Gabrielle Macdonald owner of The Old Vicarage residential care home , astley bridge Bolton and Whitefield house at Whitefield Bury took on the trip of a lifetime in attempting to summit Africa’s largest mountain Mount Kilimanjaro in July of this year on a 10 day adventure that saw them complete an arduous trek up the 5895 metre mountain battling altitude sickness and passing through five ecological zones. The expedition included trekking for around 8 hours a day in temperatures as low as -17c with very basic camp facilities and little comfort overnight, the lack of hot water to keep ourselves clean was a big issue as the days progressed! It was an experience of a lifetime and we had been preparing for it for the last 12 months but it came down to us both digging into all our physical and emotional reserves to help us to complete the challenge and to ensure that we did not let all our generous supporters down. When we arrived at the summit of Uhuru peak on Thursday morning at 8 am after setting off from the camp 8 hours later in the dark our emotions were high and tears of relief and joy flowed , along with the immense feelings of pride and physical exhaustion.

Together to date our efforts are set to have raised over £6000.00 to support the work of Bolton Hospice

The Cahill Dental Care Centre has provided Life Transformational Dentistry for 15 years Cahill Dental Care is a multi award winning dental practice. Our purpose is to provide you with ultimate dental care and ensure you receive the very best treatment that modern dentistry has to offer today. We are very fortunate to have the services of Dr Amit Mistry working alongside principal dentist Dr Michael Cahill as part of our award winning team. We have over 15 years of experience with dental implants, and we know that everyday functions such as eating, smiling, laughing and talking are often severely affected by tooth loss and ill-fitting dentures. Dental implants are a way to permanently restore the spaces left by missing teeth with a fixed solution that avoids the need for removable dentures, whether they are partial or even full dentures.

What are the advantages of implants compared to dentures? Even a well-fitting denture will never be the same as having natural teeth. Dentures move when you are eating, talking or laughing, and often adhesive is required to help to hold them in place. The palate covering the roof of the mouth can take away the enjoyment of eating and drinking, and can also be

a place for food and bacteria to lodge, leading to bad breath or gum disease. Dental implants provide a solution as close as possible to your own teeth, giving a great appearance and the ability to eat any foods with complete confidence. There is no bulky plate, and the teeth are not taken out for cleaning or removed overnight. One of the biggest fears for people who have lost, or may be about to lose their remaining teeth is the thought of having to be without any teeth at all for some time. Our Same Day Teeth concept is the solution to this problem. This innovative and life changing system allows you to have your own new, beautiful, natural looking smile in just one day, by using just four implants to securely hold a new set of upper or lower teeth called a bridge. Same Day‌ Treatment begins first thing in the morning when we very gently and carefully remove any failing teeth, and place your dental implants. We ensure your comfort at all times, and can offer sedation as an option to make the procedure even easier for you. Your custom made provisional bridge is then constructed by our highly qualified technicians, and a few hours later your new smile is expertly fitted onto your implants. You will then be ready to leave with a confident smile, and the improved quality of life associated with it. After a suitable healing period of a few months we will then construct your final, definitive smile. We promise that you will never have the worry or embarrassment of not having any teeth.

Testimonials from patients:-

By the end of the day I had my new teeth in. They looked excellent. I now have my definitive bridge in and it looks and feels fantastic, no food gets under it like it would under a denture and it never moves, I would definitely recommend anybody that needs this treatment to have it done as it has changed my life and if I had to do it again I would. I now smile, laugh and talk with ease, I can actually eat without worry that my teeth are going to break I think I made the right choice. I can’t thank Michael and the team enough for their help and compassion - Maureen.

HEALTH

Quality dentures mean a quality lifestyle The Importance of Dentures

The eyes, nose and teeth are the focal points of every face; they give the first impressions of your personality.

• •

Natural teeth grow in proportion and in harmony with your facial features and your dentures should be made accordingly. Your teeth, or your dentures, have many important functions: to support your facial muscles, to help formulate your speech, and most importantly to chew your food and start the digestive process. It is very important to chew food properly, as poorly chewed food will take longer to digest, especially for the elderly who could risk problems in the digestive system.

Choice of Dentures There are four main quality standards in denture materials. The denture base (gum coloured on which the denture teeth sit). • • 72

Standard Quality High Impact Acrylics (much stronger)

Injection Pressure Formed (Premium Denture Base) Flexible (Partial Dentures) Metal Denture

The Denture Teeth • • • •

2 Layer Acrylic (economy) 3 Layer Acrylic (harder wearing) 4 Layer Reinforced (hard wearing, natural look) N.F.C. (Nano filled composite) premium teeth.

Of course, the materials alone will not make a good denture. In the hands of a skillful and experienced Clinical Dental Technician the best results are achieved.

Dentures Need Regular Servicing Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are also in a pretty hostile environment in the mouth, being attacked by strong acid, bacteria, hot, cold and spicy food. Denture material absorbs liquids and food odour. Daily cleaning is essential as well as professional ultrasonic cleaning in a dental laboratory at least once a

year. Due to constant bone resorbtion dentures will become loose sooner or later. Loose dentures will increase damage to the gums and bone structure, and increase the risk of breakage. Have them re-lined as soon as possible to get a good fit. It only takes a day or two. Have your dentures inspected by a Clinical Dental Technician at least every two years, or more frequently if necessary.

Your Dentures need Attention 1. When they become loose. 2. When teeth or denture base discolours. 3. When tooth surfaces become flat. 4. When denture base does not fit around natural teeth (in partial dentures). 5. When you develop deep lines around your mouth. 6. When your chin sticks out, and the corners of your lips are constantly wet, developing sores. 7. When you stop smiling and feel embarrassed.

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

My Dentures have become loose!

Should I have a spare set of Dentures made?

This is easily remedied by a procedure know as Re-lining. A new layer of Denture base is added to your existing Denture, improving the fit and restoring confidence.

Yes, it is very important to have a spare set of dentures for emergencies in case of breakage.

Dentures with worn down teeth Teeth excessively worn, require a new set of dentures.

Dentures on Implants

This type of Denture is constructed in conjunction with the Dental Implant Surgeon. This is a very good procedure when the patient has limited control and retention of their Dentures. The finished Dentures ‘click’ into position offering the ultimate in Denture Retention.

Major improvements in Facial Features Padding dentures to reduce lines and fill up sunken cheeks will require a new set of dentures. It is advisable to have a new set of dentures made every 5 to 10 years.

Difficulties in Constructing a Good Set of Dentures Constructing a functional and aesthetically pleasing set of dentures is the most difficult task in dentistry. We are not only replacing lost teeth, but also lost tissue matter and bone. In other words, we have to re-create your facial features as they were before the loss of your natural teeth. In most cases we do not know what your teeth looked like, what size they were or what position they were in originally. We have a few indications but mostly we have to rely on our visual and artistic judgement. At the same time we have to use our technical expertise in order to make the denture stable and functional. Denture construction is more art than science.

What is a Clinical Dental Technician?

under gone further Education and Training in areas such as Medical Emergencies Cross Infection Control and Oral Pathology (cancers and anomalies) to name just a few sections that make up the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology as Awarded by the Royal Collage of Surgeons (RCS). It is this qualification that allows the clinicians at Bolton Denture Centure to be able to be registered and regulated with the General Dental Council (the official body for protecting the public with regards to dentistry) and carry indemnity insurance. It is this qualification, which means that only Dentists and Clinical Dental Technicians are the only Dental Professionals permitted to supply dentures direst to the public. A dental technician is not qualified to supply a denture directly to the public. However, despite this being an act of Mal practice many technicians will still practice illegally without informing the patient that they are not qualified. If you are unsure if your denture provider is qualified; ask them for their GDC registration number, then contact the GDC to see if they are registered not just as a dental technician but as a CDT.

money advice, customers can also be referred to the council’s money skills and benefits advisors.

The store, named ‘The Square’, is one of the first in the UK being opened by a council and its partners.

As well as offering affordable loans to residents on goods, Hoot Credit Union also has its own section of The Square for its services. Anyone will be able to drop into The Square to join, to make deposits or withdrawals and access their accounts.

Bolton Council has teamed up with Bolton at Home, Hoot Credit Union and Age UK Bolton to open the shop, located in the former Millets Store on Victoria Square. The shop will offer all residents across the borough access to furniture and white goods at an affordable price and with the option of low cost credit. It is aimed as an alternative to some high street stores which offer weekly payments for goods at high rates of interest. There will also be opportunities for people to access a range of money and debt advice. Residents can walk into the new retail unit and look at furniture and white goods on display. There will also be an online catalogue of further goods available through the council and Bolton at Home’s suppliers. Once customers have identified a purchase, they can purchase the item outright, or be directed to Hoot Credit Union, where they can discuss a loan for purchasing the item, with affordable rates of interest. If they wish to get 74

Age UK Bolton also has a base in the retail unit, where residents are able to access a wide range of products and services. The Information and Advice service covers benefits & entitlements, pensions, housing, home and residential care, will-making service and free legal advice. Age UK also offer travel, car and home insurance and funeral plans and energy packages. The Square will also act as a gateway to Age UK’s Befriending service, its network of lunch & leisure clubs and the Home from Hospital service that provides practical and emotional support for people who have just left hospital. The store is funded by the council and its partners, with the council’s share coming from its £1m anti-poverty fund. Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Social Inclusion, Councillor Kate Lewis, said: “We’re really pleased

that this store is now open. We hope that the combination of affordable household goods, financial services and money advice provided by the council, the credit union and its partners will assist people on low incomes with buying goods, without getting into further debt. However, the store will offer something for everyone in Bolton, from affordable white goods, to ethical savings accounts, and from money advice to travel insurance.” David Batten, Manager of Hoot Credit Union said: “The credit union does not just provide credit to people who are financially excluded or in debt, but is a safe and ethical place for anyone to save or borrow money, so we would encourage any residents looking for a new savings account or loan to come and chat to us.” Suzanne Hilton from Age UK Bolton said: “Why not come and see us in our new home at The Square to find out about everything that we have on offer through Age UK to make your later life a little more comfortable? While you’re there do join us in a cuppa at our Brew Station on the ground floor, where you can browse the literature or just have a chat with one of our friendly staff or volunteers.”

CARE

How to best support those suffering with Dementia and their families 1. When dealing with Dementia, it’s often easy to focus on the illness and lose sight of the individual. Whenever you see the person with Dementia treat them with respect and dignity to help them feel confident and valued, however advanced their Dementia may be. 2. Equally, it is important to communicate in a clear and reassuring way to help the Dementia sufferer feel at ease. Even if the person doesn’t understand what you’re saying they may pick up on non-verbal communication, so ensure your tone is warm and that your body language is open and friendly to avoid unintentionally coming across as stressed or irritated. 3. Let the sufferer and their family know you are there for them by making sure you stay in touch. Arrange regular meet-ups or just pop round for a cup of tea and a chat – even a quick text or phone call to let the family know you’re thinking of them can make a huge difference.

The Care You Deserve In The Place You Love

4. Find out as much as you can about Dementia and how it is affecting the particular person involved. That way when you talk to family and friends about it, you are in the best position to be understanding and offer the right kind of support. 5. Be a good listener – those supporting the person suffering with Dementia often need someone to talk through things with, so ask thoughtful questions and listen carefully, and give them time to explore their feelings freely without judgment. 6. Offer to help out with little things. Families living with Dementia will undeniably feel the stresses of everyday life to an even greater extent and have less time, so give practical support by helping with their weekly shop, or offering to do the school run. 7. Organise a treat or outing to include the person with Dementia. Think of an appropriate activity for everyone to do together, such as a walk in the park or a trip to the seaside, and give everybody a fun day out. 8. Offer practical tips for how to make life easier for the Dementia sufferer. Small suggestions like placing useful telephone numbers by the phone or labelling cupboards and drawers can make a huge difference to daily life.

At Platinum Care we’re proud to offer a tailor-made home care living solution that we consider one of the greatest values in social care living today. We believe in the care you deserve in the place you love. Assisted Living: Trained carers provide assistance with medication management and support for service users to live as independently as possible. Coordinating with other stakeholders. Platinum Care will deliver the very best assisted living for those seeking to live as independently as possible. Independent Living: Most elderly people prefer to remain in the privacy and comfort of their own home. Platinum Care provide professional support workers to enable independent living.

Our mission is to provide the best service, care and match for you ....

9. Give the carer or family member a break – suggest a treat such as a spa weekend or theatre trip, or even just take them out for dinner or coffee as a welcome break from their everyday routine. 10. Appreciate that supporting a relative with Dementia will be hard for the whole family, and will mean changes and disruptions to everyday life. Children in particular may be more affected emotionally, so offer them a chance to express their feelings and talk things through, and don’t be surprised by small changes in behaviour such as them becoming frustrated or anxious. Bolton Dementia Support Bolton Dementia Support is a registered charity supporting people living with dementia and their carers/family members. The charity provides information, advice and support to anyone affected by the condition, directly or indirectly. We hold three memory cafés each week in different venues across the Borough. We also hold a carer support group meeting every Tuesday morning at Thicketford Centre. On the last Thursday of every month we have an evening social at St Gregory’s Social Club in Farnworth.

For more information on what we do please contact us on 01204 386696 or visit our website at www.allcommunity.co.uk/dementiasupportgroup.

Young Onset Group We have recently started a Young Onset Group for younger people living with dementia and their carers (aged 65 and under). The Young Onset Group meets once every three weeks at different venues across the Borough. Recently the group have been ten pin bowling at Hollywood Bowl Middlebrook. Last month the group met at the Kings Head in Deane for a fun pub night and enjoyed a quiz, raffle and potato pie supper.

The charity shop is now open! On Monday 20th July we had the grand opening of our charity shop. The shop was opened by Andy Lee who is leading the ‘donate £1 for dementia’ campaign which you may have read about in the Bolton newspapers. The opening was very successful with lots of interest and purchases made. This new venture is very exciting for the charity and we hope it will allow us to become more financially independent in the future. The shop is situated at 329 Bury Road, BL2 6BB and is open from 10am until 4pm Monday to Saturday. If you have any donations please drop them off during opening hours. If you need us to collect your donations then please contact us and this can be arranged. If you are interested in volunteering at the shop please contact Janet for more details. Tel: 01204 773435
