Old Smokey meets his match Match making through social media is perhaps nothing new but taking a couple of 50-plus silver surfers and an ageing cat acting as introducer has to be something of a first! But it has worked out just purrfectly for everybody. Old Smokey is something of a media star on Facebook. He’s the mouthpiece of a former top national newspaper photographer who decided to launch the page for pet lovers, their stories and their photographs. Little did he know that unwittingly the site was to be the meeting place for a couple then living 150 miles apart but whose lives and careers had started right on his own Lancashire doorstep.
As Old Smokey strolled the green acres of his adopted home little did he know that behind the scenes a romance was unfolding with all the ingredients of Wuthering Heights, a story set very close to his own doorstep, where, ironically, our modern day Heathcliff was living. His Cathy was many miles away but through the humour and banter which the couple shared on the Facebook page a friendship and more was forming as Smokey catnapped his way through far more than his standard nine lives. We read so much about Internet love stories now. They are usually the province of the young but our lovers are beyond the first flush of youth and kept their true feelings hidden among the pictures of Spring lambs and cuddly puppies on Old Smokey’s page. Few knew their secret and Old Smokey was oblivious to the fact that he was the catalyst (go on, groan then) in a blossoming relationship, a meeting of minds and a fabulous friendship which neither of our anonymous lovers had been looking for but which fell naturally into their laps as both had been victims of unhappiness before. It became obvious to the couple that destiny decreed they must be
Graham Smith
together and they met one day in the shadow of the legendary Pendle Hill, an area where they had both worked many years ago, but which still held a magic for both of them. The meeting confirmed all that they already knew… and more. Old Smokey had done a catastrophic (more groans) piece of match making. He probably sat back in the sun and knew he’d done a scratch job (I don’t care how much you groan any more). The couple are now together and very happy, proof that social media can bring fulfilment to all ages, can bridge the miles, can bring like minds together and Old Smokey knows his master’s page wasn’t such a daft idea after all. The players in this piece met up recently…Old Smokey was asleep on the coffee table. He cast an eye towards the couple as though he was the cat that got the cream. He didn’t…….I did.
Big John and the pc brigade Irregular readers of mine will know the pc brigade gets up many of my orifices. Recently the mentally challenged of the USA have decided there can’t be a national John Wayne day because of racist comments he made when he was alive. What?

As I recall John shot thousands of Indians as an actor but never killed one in his own right. What a load of bloody wigwams. I interviewed John many years ago. He was drunk, belligerent, drawling and a pain in the proverbial but I loved him, as I had loved him in every film he ever made. He was a larger than life character with vices. He had opinions, he wore a wig but he was a lovely live human being who gave pleasure to so many. So who are these twerps who say he cannot be commemorated? Get on your horses and drink your milk. He was an actor who played a part. These twits cannot even be themselves without a script written by lunatics.
what’s this coloured hair thing all about? I’m almost used to the younger generation having tattoos and metal protruding from every bodily orifice but green, blue and red hair. I don’t get it. It is not attractive in any way and makes them look like frustrated orang-utans who are in need of a banana. Recently I saw three apparitions in the supermarket with varying shades of top knot. It put me right off my breakfast of quails’ eggs in octopus pee and thoroughly spoiled my frogs’ leg sandwich.
We’ll meet again
99. She seems to share the longevity of the Royal Family to whom she is so close. Is it really 21 years since we last heard her sing in public? And 60 plus years before that since she was the Forces sweetheart It’s some years now since we sat and reminisced in a small French restaurant, her eyes wistfully looking out to the sea surrounding the country she helped to liberate. Keep smiling through the years you wonderful lady , the inspiration of so many memories.
One of the true icons of British entertainment, Dame Vera Lynn, is now
Enough to make you ill As the years advance I find myself in need of a little medical attention, and that’s exactly what I get…little. Arrive at the surgery and no one at reception speaks to you. You have to punch your date of birth into a machine and it tells you if you have an appointment. It’s also bloody ignorant and doesn’t say “Good Morning”. Alternatively you can have a telephone appointment. By the time the doctor phones you you’ve Googled your symptoms and know more about the prognosis than she or she does. I spoke to a doctor recently and got more drugs over the phone than I could have done with a machine gun raid on a pharmacy. Scary. What happened to the good old days where the doctor pricked your boil?
The final curtain We’re running out of stars and icons. So many famous names and wonderful entertainers are leaving us this year, and some not so wonderful who are praised as being icons, a much overused word in the media. Terry Wogan, Cilla Black and Paul Daniels are three who spring to mind as having contributed much to not just the world of entertainment but far beyond it. Their talent was honed at a grass roots level with real people, not electronically enhanced and wrapped in a brick to throw at the unsuspecting public.
Hair raising Being follically challenged I should probably keep my mouth shut, but

TRAVEL
unusal holiday destinations WHEN our children are younger family holidays fall into very distinct categories – usually at some seaside venue or busy resort with enough to keep young minds and bodies occupied. As we grow older, though, and our children become independent adults, possibly with families of their own – or as we simply opt to be a little more experimental in our choice of destinations – we start to look further afield at more adventurous and unusual holiday choices. For an exotic adventure, why not consider India by rail? Jill Woods from bespoke holiday specialists Small Planet Travel explains: “It’s packed with beautiful landscapes, diverse architecture and amazing people – India truly offers something for everyone.”
Kruger National Park and the Umfolozi Reserve,” adds Jill. Or, you can climb aboard the Trans Siberian Express, the Eastern and Oriental Express, the Rocky Mountaineer or, closer to home, enjoy a short journey on the Venice Simplon Orient Express. “They’re all luxurious and a relaxing way to experience the culture and beauty of different regions,” states Jill.
8
And if you want to go somewhere different than the Mediterranean on your cruise, experience the splendour of Alaska or the South Pacific. Advises Jill: “Travel from Lima to Buenos Aires, Tokyo to Beijing or experience the natural wonders of the Galapagos Islands – there are cruises for all seasons and interests.” If you’re wanting to escape the often dreary UK Winter, where better to head than “Down Under” and experience the vibrant cities, beautiful beaches and awesome mountain vistas of Australia and New Zealand?
The “Palace on Wheels” starts and ends its journey in Delhi and takes in Jaipur, Rathambore National Park, Udaipur ad Jodhpur, allowing passengers to experience the sights of India in a relaxed atmosphere. “There are similar experiences in South Africa aboard the ‘Pride of Africa’ or the ‘Blue Train’, taking in the major cities of Pretoria, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, along with the
If the train is not for you, though, and you would rather spend time on the high seas, there are several cruise lines that offer an all-inclusive luxury experience. You can have all suite/all balcony cruises which include free excursions, drinks and gratuities.
Jill Woods from NOT JUST TRAVEL has travelled the world and is passionate about travel
“January and February are a great time to head to the Southern Hemisphere,” says Jill. “Flights between cities are short and inexpensive or rent a camper van or car and take a leisurely drive through the stunning countryside.” Accommodation ranges from goodvalue motels and campgrounds to

luxurious five-star hotels or lodges. “Adding a stopover is a popular choice,” insists Jill, “and flying east or west there are some great options.”
downpours are common. The most popular time to visit is between November and April, with the heaviest rains between June and September.
Experience the Orient in Singapore, Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur, kick back on a South Pacific island or visit San Francisco or LA. All these are possible these days and great destinations, with a great range of first-class airlines available. Looking for somewhere quite different? Jill advises that Costa Rica is becoming a popular holiday choice. “Generally, it’s best to avoid travel in September and October when the heavy rains arrive,” she states. “But many people favour the Green Season (May/June and November) when the seasons are changing. The land is verdant and the National Parks are quieter, giving you the opportunity to experience the forests, beaches and volcanoes without the crowds.
For a completely different culture, how about a private tour of China? Travel from Beijing and visit the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall before heading to Datong, Taiyan to marvel at the sandstone statues in the Yungang Caves.
“The variety of wildlife in Costa Rica is amazing and on the Pacific Coast whales can be observed between January and March and August to October. There are also some fabulous beaches, especially around the Icoya Peninsula and Guanacaste.”

The Far East has also become a greater attraction to Western travellers with amazing tours available. Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are popular for temples, beaches and the inspiring stories of human resilience. Experience the splendour of Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, the World Heritage site of Luang Prabang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. Vietnam has some gorgeous beaches, too. Winters can be cold in Hanoi but further south the climate is kind throughout the year, although tropical
At Pingyao visit the walled Ming and Qing dynasty town before heading on to the Shaloin Temple and Xian to see the famous Terracotta Warriors. Spring and Autumn are generally the favourites times for tours of China, avoiding the harsh Winter and searing Summer heat experienced in some of its regions. But wherever in the world you decide to travel, just remember that you can follow your imagination when it comes to holidays – exploring and making new memories at a time in your life when you can really savour them. • For more ideas on unusual holiday venues go to www.my.notjusttravel.com/smallplanet-travel

sponsored by Village Hotel in Western Crete, through Simpson Travel, who have several properties in Europe with a no-child policy. It was a good decision! Small cottages dotted around charming grounds, with a pool, hammam, spa and restaurant for breakfast, ensured privacy and quiet. Having always been busy chasing around after children, sun cream and hats on, water packed, snacks at the ready, it was a relief to pick up ourselves, a beach towel and head out with little effort. The village was small and sweet, with a few restaurants serving traditional food and pleasingly well priced drinks in the square. We chatted to other holidaying couples, who were, without dissent, rather revelling in this time together, child-free.
HOLIDAYS JUST FOR ADULTS By Jennie Carr from Silver Travel Advisor Over the last couple of years, we have enjoyed several holidays and short breaks on our own. Yes, we have travelled without our lovely children, all of whom have had the decency to leave home, or truth be told, head for establishments of learning around the country. So we have intermittent returnees, with bags of washing, boxes of books and objects of little discernible use to my eyes, that cannot be parted with! And we do still enjoy our holidays as a family however the trips a deux are rather a highlight, unexpectedly so in some ways!
Close to Home It all started with a break at Thoresby Hall in Nottinghamshire, one of Warner Leisure Hotels 13 splendid properties. Most determinedly for the over 21s, and hazarding a guess, most guests were over 50, there was not a Barbie or a tank engine in sight. Nor indeed a grumpy teenager with earphones lurking in a corner. No, Thoresby Hall is proud of its adult only approach, recognising that, at times, grown ups

like to be in the company of other grown ups, no children allowed. Which does not mean a boring, stuffy environment at all. There is much play on offer: fencing, archery, Zumba, yoga and snooker just for starters. And an exceptional spa, with treatments and a pretty indoor pool for a little pampering. Warner’s particular speciality is the evening entertainment and despite, being based within a magnificent Grade 1 listed building, the theatre, part of a sympathetic extension, hosts shows, musicians and comedians of repute. We took a Friday to Monday break, wandered in the extensive grounds, dined at the Blue Grill restaurant (2 AA Rosettes) and gently boogied to the tribute band, Abba Fever. All in all, a good beginning to our time away as a couple!
Spreading our Wings Emboldened by this success, I suggested we try the Med for a week and booked the beautiful Arosmari
Simpson provide a car on this trip as exploring is definitely part of the holiday. I can certainly say that we made the best of this, visiting monasteries, beaches, the towns of Chania and Rethymno. And there wasn’t a single moan from the back seat – it was empty apart from my trusty Panama.
Another island triumph After a really busy 2 week summer family holiday, three girls and mother as well, which frankly felt like running a marathon in flip flops and failing dismally at my own version of Mary Berry, it was most certainly time for another break on our own. An island again, this time Cyprus to Ayii Anargyri Natural Healing Spa Resort, just for grown ups. We booked through Adults Only Hotels, great name and does what it says on the tin: holidays without children in over 30 destinations, across a range of hotels 3* to 5*+. They organised flights, transfers, car hire and the hotel. Our hotel was a decidedly relaxing spot, deep in the mountains behind the bustle Paphos, surrounded by forests and mountains. It is well known as a spa, with natural mineral springs and was replete with soft-shoed therapists who looked like models. However, do not be fooled, those girls can make grown men wince when they get cracking (quite literally) on a sports massage.

TRAVEL We visited in the autumn, so it was quiet which was what we wanted. And most comfortably warm, still swimsuitson-the-beach weather. The hotel is created from wood and stone, neutral colours throughout, so it’s very much in tune with the environment. Big panoramic windows are everywhere, bringing the utterly restful outside in and reinforcing the calm. In fact, it’s so tranquil that we fell asleep after a hydrotherapy treatment, in comfy loungers facing the woods. Not a child in sight (or sound) to disturb us.
Where next?
Ayii Anargyri Natural Healing Spa Resort, Cyprus
We are certainly getting the hang of our adults only holidays, and the plan is Italy next, with Florence and Rome in mind. So, two city centres likely and a little touring as well. I am excited and looking forward to visiting the Uffizi again, indulging in Duomo gawping and divine Italian food. Staying, of course, in hotels just for grown-ups!

Door to Door Coach Tours with Ellen Smith Membership No: 10228
TRY to describe the ideal holiday and it’s a fair bet it would start right at your front door and simply whisk you away for a fantastic experience. Well, at Ellen Smith Coach Tours, that’s exactly what we do. We’re proud of our efficient door-to-door service that picks you up at your home address at a pre-arranged time in a taxi or small minibus. We take you straight to one of our two meeting points: Birch Services near Heywood or Poplar Services near Lymm, where there’s no hanging around as you’re usually on your way within 15 to 20 minutes. This is just the start of a memorable holiday or break that’s packed with attention to detail – because we know from experience what works for people, and we want to give them the best. Our business was started in 1900 in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, so we’ve got a long and distinguished history of providing top-quality, value for money coach holidays. In fact, as managing director Paul Targett says: “We get it right – that’s certainly what our customers tell us, and they choose to come back again and again.” Ellen Smith Coach Tours wants clients to completely enjoy the experience of their chosen holiday or break – whether it’s to the picturesque Highlands of Scotland or the rugged beauty of Cornwall. We choose the best hotels and inject genuine creative thought into putting together interesting and enjoyable itineraries Your driver will always be very experienced, pleasant and helpful. “Many of our drivers know our regular clients by their first names, which all adds to the family atmosphere,” states Mr Targett.
No need, either, to worry about carrying heavy cases as the vast majority of our hotels offer a porterage service. On your return date, the reverse of your original journey is all in place. Your taxi is waiting for you at one of the two service stations and you’re usually back through your own front door with a cuppa and feet up to watch “The Chase”! Our whole holiday experience is worry-free. All our holidays are fully bonded by the Confederation of Passenger Transport Bonding Scheme – a Government-approved consumer protection scheme ensuring your money is protected. We also offer popular “Mature Singles” holidays where all the hotel bedrooms are sole occupancy, offering a brilliant break for the solo traveller. We also run some excellent Continental coach holidays to wonderful destinations like Lake Como, Lake Garda, Alpine trips and Normandy for the D-Day landing beaches. And, for that touch of extra luxury, we offer Fred Olsen cruises from Liverpool at unbelievable prices, plus a variety of Air, Cruise & Worldwide holidays.
In fact, Ellen Smith Coach Tours is simply all about the best of holidays – brought to your door.
Our coaches are executive standard with toilets, air conditioning and reclining seats. On the journey to your hotel, we tend to avoid motorway services and visit some of the glorious villages, towns and cities dotted around our lovely country. We always plan to arrive at our destination around 4.30 – in time to give you plenty of opportunity for a quick snooze and to settle in your room before dinner. As we normally only use 3 and 4 star hotels, with the occasional family-run 2 star hotel that we’ve used for many years, you’re in for a comfortable and relaxing stay with the very best in catering. We also use a range of hotels to suit specific tours. Many of our tours are themed, like “Royal Sandringham and the Sport of Kings” or “An Irish Country House Experience”. All our tours have day excursions at no extra charge, including canal or train journeys or visits to historic castles or country estates. “We try to showcase the best of what our country has to offer,” added Mr Targett.

Electric pedal power The perfect choice for those who prefer a gentler bike ride
B y J ennie Carr f rom S il v er T ra v el A d v isor free to enjoy the view and take glorious photos once you’ve reached the top, not to mention the enjoyment of overtaking a few “manual” cyclists on the way up!
Cycling holidays are becoming more popular every year, and especially amongst Silver Travellers. The success of British athletes in this sport has brought out the Bradley Wiggins and Laura Trott (plus a few years) in many of us, especially for leisure time. The wonderfully exciting Tour de France in the UK in 2014 has also added to the growing passion we have for cycling at home and abroad. All well and good for those fitness fanatics who can don skintight lycra and pedal off on weekend mornings before most of us have had a coffee or thought of exercise. However for many, the more appealing notion is a cycling holiday; quiet lanes in warm European countries, right off the beaten track with wonderful scenery taking in sleepy villages, orchards and grazing cattle, with the sparkling Med enticingly close. Until of course you spy, ahead in the distance,

gently rolling countryside, which the closer you get, turns into the equivalent of Mont Blanc for the infrequent cyclist. Gone are all thoughts of the divine scent of the lavender fields and the photos you plan to take of stunning vistas. Suddenly a gentle spin on a bike turns into something rather more challenging. Fortunately, help is at hand and not in the form of a farmer with a tractor. The electric bike! These marvellous inventions, originally designed in a basic form in the 1890s, operate using a battery although they still need to be pedalled to move onwards, and indeed, upwards. So you have all the joys of a normal bike, fresh air, exercise and the feeling of freedom with some serious bonuses! Speeds of up to 25km an hour can be reached, a real plus should you go further off the beaten track than anticipated or fancy taking in a castle or market that is miles out of your way. And of course, that hideous hill becomes a concern consigned to the past. The electric bike will take all the hard work out of cycling upwards, leaving you
The pedal assist allows you to cycle without a struggle, as you can choose the speed and amount of assistance the battery gives, all very simply. If you wish to use the battery, turn it on, if you are happy under your own leg power, it can stay off. This certainly makes for a really pleasant ride for the leisure cyclist. Added to this, the ‘sit up and beg’ position of the bikes makes for a relaxing cycle, and avoids the back breaking, horizontal crouch used by the sportsman. The actual body of the bike is, without question, heavier, however the battery alleviates this once you get going, so don’t be put off if the first few moments make your legs feel a little leaden. All will soon be well! Should you be one of a couple or group who have differing levels of fitness, the e-bike may well allow everyone to enjoy a holiday together, with the infrequent pedellar able to keep up with the more dedicated cyclist. Or perhaps it could enable you to take a slightly more ambitious, in terms of hills and distance, trip than you might have done. No longer restricted to river valleys, you could be enjoying the hills of Tuscany or coastal paths of Portugal. Concerns about your physical ability will vanish and a great sense of well-being will complete a day’s exercise, as opposed to fears about aching muscles and the application of embrocation. Electric bikes have had a slight image problem historically, being seen as somewhat uncool and not for ‘real’ cyclists. The pragmatic amongst us have taken another stance and sales of the electric bike are soaring! The Chinese, famous for their passion for cycling, have

bought more than 120 million and in Germany, BMW have brought out their own version of the e-bike. Surely there can be no finer endorsement. Add to that the Dutch enthusiasm for this mode of transport and you can see how well it’s catching on! Little did Ogden Bolton Junior of the USA know what he was starting when he patented the battery powered bicycle in 1895. And frankly, the need never to wear lycra on an electric bike, unless you so choose, must surely be the greatest advantage known to other road users.
It all started when Lyons Holiday Parks was founded by Joseph William Lyons, it was some seventy two years later that Robin Hood was purchased which went on to become the flag ship park of The Lyons Holiday Parks Group. From there they continued to grow to eight parks they have today. From being the very first holiday park in North Wales to being the biggest and best family-run holiday park operator in the area...The Lyons Group is still run by the same family today, even after 90 years! Committed to making happy holiday memories for many more years to come and are always looking for ways to improve the holiday and caravan ownership experience!
So for all of us who desire the joys of a cycling holiday, without the pain or strain that Sir Bradley endures, the electric bicycle must surely be the way to go!
Silver Travel Advisor recommends... Walking and cycling specialist, Headwater Holidays, is offering electric bikes to customers on selected selfguided cycling holidays in France, Italy, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland, with an e-bike supplement from just £50 per person for those wanting to upgrade to an electric bike on their trip.
Throughout the eight parks, Lyons offer something for everyone; whether it's a fun filled family park on the coast, or a relaxing park in the stunning Welsh countryside, there's something for you at Lyons. Plus, you can even own your own holiday home at any of the parks and enjoy a lifetime of holidays for many years to come!

In 2010 they purchased their first hotel, the Nant Hall and 2013 when Woodlands Hall Hotel and Country Club was added to the group, offering luxury accommodation and fine dining. Oakfield Holiday Park in Towyn is the latest addition to the Lyons family, coming into the group just two months ago.

THE NORTH'S LARGEST
E-BIKE STORE
know what we are doing, having trained mechanics, tools, spares and above all the knowledge and backing of all the leading brands.
In Europe pedal assist cycle sales commonly known as e-bikes are massive and now here in the UK sales are growing at an un-believable rate now that the quality and choice has finely arrived.
HERE IS A SIMPLE GUIDE TO COVER THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS... MOTOR AND BATTERY
There are two main types of motor, hub drive and crank drive. Hub drive has a motor either in the front or rear wheel supplied with power from a battery this will either pull you from the front wheel or push you from the rear wheel. Crank drive is where the motor is mounted on the frame where the pedals are attached, there are many advantages to this it has a smaller lighter battery, better balanced and less surge as the torque is supplied more evenly throughout the range. The big boys have got behind the crank system with Bosch, Yamaha and Shimano leading the way in technology they cost a little more than the hub system but are our choice of system as they are more reliable have more of a natural feel and perform much better up the hills. As for batteries again the big boys are now involved with Sony and Panasonic leading the way with the lithium cells, there lighter than Ni-cad and generally last longer.
MAINTENANCE
Don't be put off with the motor and electrical bits of kit as most motors and batteries are sealed and need very little maintenance, it will not require much more than a normal bike and we offer free servicing to all our customers for a year. Obviously if you look after it, it will look after you.
TEST RIDES
NOW the most important and fun part, don't just ride it for a few metres we are lucky to have at both our stores flat, bumpy, twisty and dare I say it bloody steep hills, you can try the gears, brakes, position and the different power levels of assist in fact we recommend you try a few. If you want to take bikes out for a few hours we offer accompanied rides free or the chance to hire one for a day or two.
MAKING THAT PURCHASE
After your test rides you should know which bike suites you and your budget, we offer interest free finance, payment by credit, debit and good old cash we will also take any bike as part exchange the choice is yours.
STYLE OF BIKE
Think of any conventional cycle be it Road, Mountain, Commuter, Trekking, Folding and even the three wheel Trike we stock them all plus the equivalent in an electric model. In a nutshell we will have a bike that will meet your needs and aspirations.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS Cycling has always been a popular way to enjoy the countryside whilst staying fit. However, the electric bike has opened it up to a new section of cyclists. Some people may argue that a conventional cycle will keep you fitter. A recent Australian study shows that on an electric bike a rider maintains a heart rate intensity that is mainly in the target range where cardio vascular benefit is gained, fats are burned in producing energy and no lactic acid build up occurs. Riding a conventional cycle provides the strongest cardio vascular and fitness workout. The intensity, however, is often so high that carbohydrates would be used for energy along with lactic acid build up. A study of 20 healthy but sedentary subjects (10 male and 10 female) showed improvement to general health condition, stating: “The conclusion remains that the electric assisted bike can help overcome the barrier to physical activity.”

HEALTH & FITNESS 3. Ditch the sugar The ‘buzz’ word of the moment; But, the fact remains, sugar is full of calories yet totally lacking in nutritional value. Sugar can be addictive, with effects on our brain similar to hard drugs and may contribute to diabetes, as well as obesity. Ideally, ditch it completely, or at least try sticking to the recommended limit of 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day. 4. Keep hydrated A glass of water before meals has been shown to reduce the amount of calories we consume. What’s more, we might think we are hungry, when in fact we are thirsty. But don’t reach for a fizzy drink or juice, which are both high in sugar. Instead, get a taste for pure water and your body will thank you for it. 5. Sleep well Studies show we are more likely to reach for high-sugar, high-fat foods when tired. So, a good night’s sleep is an easy way to help your weight-loss efforts.
How can I really manage my blood pressure?
TOP TIPS
FROM DR SALLY NORTON How do I lose weight? As a nation, we are getting heavier and heavier, despite decades of yo-yo dieting. With gradual weight gains, our risk of diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, breathing problems, infertility and much more, increases. So face the facts – are you ‘tripping the light fantastic’ or ‘packing a hefty punch’? And more to the point, how do we stop the numbers on the scales and importantly, our levels of fat, increasing?
2. Beat portion distortion – choose a smaller plate! Portions are out of control – we are consuming larger quantities of food every year. Super-size high street drinks and buckets of popcorn are now the norm. Simply eating from a smaller plate and getting portions back into perspective will help you shed the pounds with minimal effort.
Dr. Sally Norton’s top five weight loss tips: 1. Avoid processed food where possible If you have to study a label to find out how much sugar, salt, unhealthy fats and other additives there are – it is best avoided. Processed food is often stripped of fibre, low in vitamins and minerals, as well as being packed full of nutrient-poor calories. If you cook and prepare real food from scratch, you are likely to be providing your body with premium fuel and it will function far better as a result.

High blood pressure affects one in four adults, putting their health at risk. It increases our risk of stroke, heart disease and more. The scary thing is, over 5 million of us In the UK don’t know about it as it doesn’t always cause symptoms initially. So, firstly, the NHS recommends we get our blood pressure checked by a GP, particularly if you are overweight, smoke, have relatives with a history of high blood, or if you are worried about health in other ways. Home monitoring with an easy-to-use blood pressure measuring devices, then allows you to keep a check on your own blood pressure at different times of day or night, in different circumstances – exercising, stressed, relaxed, standing or lying. Monitoring at home, also avoids the stress and anxiety of visiting the doctor. So, how do you achieve and maintain a healthy blood pressure?
Dr. Sally Norton’s top five tips for achieving and maintaining a healthy blood pressure: Weight loss expert & brand ambassador for Kinetik Wellbeing www.kinetikwellbeing.com
1. Weight control
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
Keep your weight in the healthy range – and your waist to hip ratio 1 (or 0.85 for women) 2. Keep active If you are fit and get plenty of exercise, your blood pressure is likely to benefit too. Motorcise Ladies Exercise Centre has been helping deconditioned ladies get fitter and lose the weight needed to live a healthier more active life for the last 16 years. We now have a revised even better healthy eating plan with great results and more cardic equipment added to the motorised machines for an even better workout. Friendly staff and atmosphere makes Motorcise a great place to get fitter and healthier. Come and join us now see what we can do for you. 3. Eat a healthy diet without too much salt A healthy diet is likely to help weight control, with the added benefit of being low in salt. Salt is one of the greatest influences on our blood pressure and reducing salt is one of the quickest ways to reduce blood pressure. But remember, 75% of the salt we eat is already in foods like ready meals, bread, breakfast cereal, sauces and processed meats. So, avoid processed food where possible, cooking from scratch is preferable. 4. Stop smoking and cut right back on alcohol Both of these affect our blood pressure – and much more besides – so binning the fags and slashing the alcohol consumption will do us a lot of good.
5. Get help
2. Find an activity that works for you
Finally, if your blood pressure is high, take advice from your doctor as further treatment may be needed.
Take a look at your lifestyle, likes and dislikes and find an activity that is going to work best for you. Choose something you’ll be able to find the time for, that you’ll enjoy and that you can easily incorporate into your life (e.g. brisk walking or perhaps a dance class). Then you are more likely to maintain it longterm.
How can I improve my fitness - without hitting the gym five times a week? ‘Sitting is the new smoking’, we are told. Why? More and more evidence is suggesting that sitting for hours on end is bad for our health. We weren’t designed to spend long periods of each day slumped on the sofa or hunched over our desks, gazing at computer screens. Studies have shown that compared to more active people, the risk of early death is 15 per cent greater for people who sit more than eight hours a day. Long periods of inactivity can increase your risk of heart and cardiovascular disease, weight gain and type 2 diabetes, as well as some cancers. You may also become prone to headaches, visual fatigue, neck and low back pain.
So what can you do? Dr. Sally Norton’s top five tips for improving your fitness 1. Make moving a priority The problem with exercise is that we often think that means visiting the gym five times a week – when it fact we should simply be moving more. Fitness – i.e. making time to move, should be an essential part of our day, in the same way we might pick up the kids from school, or get to work on time. Instead of seeing it as an optional extra, we should see it as something that is vital to keeping us healthy, that way we’ll do our best to find the time, the energy, and the ways to fit it in.
Friendly Gym for Ladies Only Motorcise is a women’s gym in Bolton that provides specialised exercise programmes that can help improve your fitness and health without the need for strenuous workouts.

3. Be prepared We’re all super busy, juggling jobs, family, housework etc., every minute counts. So make sure that whatever activity you choose, you’re fully prepared. If you commit to a regular brisk walk, keep your walking boots by the front door, ready to throw on whenever you plan to head out. If you are prepared, you have fewer excuses. 4. A few minutes is better than nothing Without doubt, moving is better than staying still, even just a few minutes can make a difference. No matter how busy we are, we can always find a few spare minutes to get our heart rate up and blood pumping. So squeeze in whatever time you can find and it’ll make all the difference when it comes to your health. 5. Moving should be part of everyday Busy at work? Why not suggest a walking meeting? It will also get the creative juices flowing! Daily commute? Use your journey to work as a chance to inject some fitness into your day – ditch the car and cycle to work, or park a little further away and walk in. Meeting with friends? What a about a catch up combined with a walk in the park? Combine your socialising with some exercise rather than a coffee and cake.

Barry Manilow “One Last Time” BARRY Manilow’s latest UK tour may be entitled “One Last Time” but it’s very unlikely that the British public will ever let one of their favourite artistes simply disappear from view.
At 72, the singer who specialises in lush, sentimental ballads and orchestrated upbeat songs and has long been dubbed the consummate showman, is still as popular as ever on both sides of the Atlantic – and in many other countries around the world. He will play only eight dates in the UK – from Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena to the Manchester Arena and London’s O2 Arena – which will no doubt each be a sell-out. But his music is an enduring currency that few fans will ever stop needing, and that ensures that, even if this is “one last time” on tour, his records and TV appearances will be as much-prized as ever. His life has been all about the music. As he explains: “I am a musician. My passion for music has obliterated everything in its path for my entire life. “Whenever there was a choice between music and anything else, music won hands down every time. No one person or material thing could ever come close to the feeling I get when the music is right.”
24
Barry was born to Edna and Harold Pincus, of Russian-Jewish descent, in Brooklyn, New York, in 1943. His father left when he was just two and young Barry later adopted his mother’s maiden name of Manilow. His musical interest started early: at the age of seven he learned to play both the accordion and the piano, preferring the latter, and was singing by 13. After graduating from high school, he was accepted into the well-known Julliard School of Music and paid for his own schooling by working in the CBS mailroom. It took time for Barry to meet the right people but he was eventually given the chance to become musical director of CBS show “Callback”. To supplement his income, he also wrote, produced and performed advertising jingles for clients including Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonalds. In 1971, a then unknown singer, Bette Midler, hired him as her pianist, arranger and musical director and it was a collaboration that brought the young
man his real break into the music world. He supervised Bette’s first two albums - her debut album won a Grammy award - and in 1972 at the Carnegie Hall, had the chance to showcase some of his own material. This led him to a new label, Bell, offering a record deal; his debut album “Barry Manilow” was released in 1973 although it didn’t sell well. After Bell itself underwent a transformation and became Arista, however, his fortunes changed. New label head Clive Davis asked Barry to record pop tune, “Brandy”, a UK hit for Scott English. Barry altered the tune to a ballad and renamed it “Mandy”, to avoid confusion with a similar-sounding hit. The haunting song really struck a nerve with the record-buying US public and went to No.1 in early 1975, remaining one of Barry’s best-loved songs of all time even today. His second, equally successful offering in early 1976 was “I Write The Songs” from the “Tryin’ To Get The Feeling” album which went triple platinum. Barry was becoming an established star.
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
CELEBRITY NEWS His concert double LP “Live” in 1977 was his first and only No.1 album with sales of more than four million copies. ABC aired his first prime-time programme “The Barry Manilow Special” in 1977, for which he won a Grammy award, and the same year he won a Special Tony award for his Broadway show. The following year, he had another triple platinum album with three Top Ten singles including the legendary “Copacabana”, and his reputation as an entertainer who delivered was made. Seven albums and five years later, he inevitably decided to change musical direction and released a swinging jazz album, “2:00 AM Paradise Café”, featuring big jazz names including Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme and Gerry Mulligan. He continued to show his versatility with swing, vocal jazz and traditional pop through various albums including “Manilow Sings Sinatra” – proving the man can sing anything from standards to showtunes and give it that Manilow magic. As he admits: “My style of music is the great American songbook meets the pop world of the Seventies and Eighties.” In 1985, he played the role of Tony Starr in the TV series “Copacabana.” In 1994, he enjoyed stage musical success with a show of the same name and followed it with another musical, “Harmony”, which toured both the US and UK extensively. Since then, the hits, the touring and the TV appearances have all continued in large amounts for the boy from Brooklyn. He’s performed in two-hour “specials”, and guested in popular shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Will & Grace.” His career has also been littered with awards; in 2002, he was inducted into the US National Academy of Popular Music’s Songwriters Hall of Fame, alongside Michael Jackson, Randy Newman and Sting. At the same time as these glittering accolades, though, and the millions of fans he attracts, he has always had his detractors who never saw his brand of music as being contemporary enough. Go to any of his shows or conventions, however and Fanilow Fever is strictly
the order of the day. The singer makes himself very accessible to fans, and many of them have followed him for the nearly three decades of his career and are intensely loyal.
“I will still make albums and do onenighters here and there. This is the last of the big tours that keep me away from home and living my life. It’s time to stop the big tours, not time to stop.”
He’s had a couple of health scares and, like many artistes before him, probably finds extensive, regular touring exhilarating but tiring. However, Barry himself is keen to point out that the title of this latest tour does not mean he is quitting his singing career.
And that’s good news for the millions for whom Barry Manilow is their singer, their showman of choice. And when worldwide pop trends of all kinds have come and gone – for them, Barry is still No.1.
As he told the American newspaper the Kansas City Star just recently: “I’ve been roaming the earth for 40 years, and it’s not that I’m retiring.

HOME the location of your current home and you have the room on your present property, this is always a good choice because it means you don’t have the stresses of moving to another area and life can go on as always, only better. Check first whether you will need planning permission or building control approval by visiting the Government website www.planningportal.gov. uk If you need an architect either go to national bodies like the Architects Registration Board on www.arb.org.uk or ask among friends and neighbours for a recommendation, and try to see something they have designed previously.

WE’VE all seen beautiful homes on TV and in magazines and thought “if only I could have that” and plan happily for the items that you definitely would buy funds permitting.

The same applies to builders. You can either visit websites like the National Federation of Builders on www. builders.org.uk or the Federation of Master Builders on www.fmb.org. uk Again, it’s always best to try to see something they have already built and find someone who can recommend them. You may want to improve your GARDEN by having it landscaped by professionals, creating wonderful areas to sit and enjoy beautiful plants and flowers in peace and tranquillity. You might want to install a HOT-TUB for both relaxing and socialising – just imagine lying in that bubbling warm water without a care in the world!
Like most major buys in life, though, we can often work towards buying one specific item or addition to our home. So, it’s definitely worth having a “wish list” of improvements that you would like if you could raise the money for them. Itemising these improvements by priority is a helpful way forward, and creating that plan can brighten up even the gloomiest day. Working around the house to see how you would improve it in the best possible way is definitely something

These days, they come in all sizes and styles to suit your property and your needs, adding extra space and light. And forget about those old conservatories that were freezing cold in the Winter and too hot in the Summer. Today’s conservatories have the latest glass technology which keeps the heat in and the cold out to create a comfortable oasis of extended living. Internally, you might want to open up rooms, getting rid of walls and changing the shape and layout of your home. OPEN-PLAN living is very popular now and very convenient, whatever your lifestyle. The only fencing you need... Are you fed up with painting your fence year in year out with expensive treatments? Well now you do not have to, as this amazing Colourfence is maintenance free and never needs painting. Steve Beaumont is running the only firm which offers Colourfence in the Bury and Bolton area. This is great news for homeowners who have become tired of the costly, timeconsuming and never-ending upkeep involved in timber fencing. Colourfence is the smart choice for long-lasting, low-maintenance fencing which comes with a 25 year guarantee and the builtin strength to withstand harsh climates including wind gusts of up to 130 miles per hour.
Timber fences need annual upkeep and painting, and yet they will age, spoil and need replacing within a matter of years.
Over the past 10 years, Colourfence has altered the way in which gardens can be fenced, and it is now available locally. Just imagine, for the price of a comparable quality timber fence, you could have a fence that’s professionally installed, will stay in place no matter what, and requires no more work than the occasional hose down with water to keep it looking as good as new. Creosote, fence paint, wood stain — all things of the past with Colourfence, so it’s time for the fence brush to be consigned to the dustbin. All surveys and installations are handled by Steve and his team, who promise an honest and friendly evaluation of your fences, and a noobligation, no-strings attached quote. Not only will a Colourfence product provide the perfect backdrop to your garden all year round and perfect privacy from prying neighbours’ eyes, it will also give the peace of mind of having a most secure boundary to your property. With 80 per cent of burglaries taking place after access through garden fences, according to Steve this has to be an added bonus which can’t be ignored.
A good-looking & well maintained fence enhances the appearance of your garden as well as improving security & safety for your family Steve, who has more than 40 years’ business experience, said:“This is great news for the people of Bury, Bolton and the surrounding areas as Colourfence is a premium fencing solution at affordable prices, choosing the product line is a no-brainer. “There’s virtually no maintenance, and it offers so much more strength and durability than timber fences,” he said. “We offer a no-nonsense, all-in price which includes installation by ourselves. “Combined with the cost and guarantees, this means that Colourfence is much better value than timber in the long term.”
Colourfence, on the other hand, is made of a strong Colorbond steel, with a special anti-corrosion layer that won’t scratch or rust, topped with a special coating, primer and a beautiful finish coat in four colours to choose from. Matching railings and gates are also available, which are guaranteed not to rust of flake for 10 years. Colourfence built its business model on ethical trading, and promises that it will never use hard-sell methods. CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL Jack a happy customer from Bolton... “Right from our call to arrange a quote which was dealt with in a friendly and courteous manner, everything was dealt with very efficiently, from the work force arriving on time, working quickly and being extremely tidy. The work was carried out over two days including removal of all waste and tidying. We were very pleased with the result and would recommend Colourfence Bolton to anyone.” For more happy customer reviews see colourfence.co.uk/bolton/testimonials

GARDEN
Give your garden a Spring awakening After the long cold months of winter, your garden may be looking a little the worse for wear. Don’t despair, however – plants are remarkably resilient, and with a bit of work, the effects of rain, wind and snow can soon be undone and your garden restored to life again. Spring offers the perfect opportunity to reinvigorate your garden and prepare the earth for a healthy growing season. Spring is also a lovely time to spend in the garden — witnessing a bare tree or shrub blossoming into its full, bushy prime is a satisfying process for both beginners and expert gardeners. With that in mind, here are our top tips for making the most of your garden in the Spring, while preparing it for the Summer.
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
Give the space a routine clean up Winter wind and frosts can be particularly cruel on plant pots, ornaments and fencing, leaving your garden looking extremely messy. Shards of orange clay or pieces of wood debris littering your garden are not only unsightly, but also make the area unsafe for children and pets. Taking care of these first will allow you to start focusing on the real gardening work, without any hindrances.
Prune out dead or damaged shrubs If your shrubs have any dead or damaged growth, now is the time to remove this. Trim evergreen shrubs if necessary to shape them or reduce their size. Winter and early spring-flowering shrubs such as forsythia and wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) can be pruned once they have finished flowering. Spring is also the time to prune roses, just before they start to bud. Wear gloves to protect your hands
37
Pulling the gardening gloves back on in spring can take some motivation, but tending to your garden sooner, rather than later, ensures that your Summer will be spent in a beautiful, pristine outdoor space.
Looking Forward to Summer with Heaton Fold Garden Centre
from thorns, and use a heavy, sturdy pair of secateurs, such as Spear & Jackson secateurs which are available online from Amazon and come with a 10-year guarantee. You should look to spend at least £20 on a pair of secateurs — you can certainly purchase them for cheaper, but you will definitely get what you pay for.
Rid the earth of weeds It’s time to get a head start on controlling weeds, before their growth gets out of hand. It is most effective to do this by hand, pulling up weeds by the roots to ensure that they don’t grow back again in the future.
Nourish the soil Once your soil is free of weeds, you can mulch the soil with a layer, (at least 5cm thick if you can manage it) of compost or well-rotted farmyard manure. Don’t
dig this into the soil, merely spread it generously on top, where it will help to suppress weeds, and leave the earthworms to gradually work it into the soil for you. You can buy compost, but it is far more resourceful to produce your own. This will allow you to dispose of garden waste while creating your own eco system, turning dead plants into food for new plants.
When buying your summer bedding plants make sure to get them from a reputable garden centre that has hardened them off before putting them out for sale. Based on Overdale Drive in Bolton, Heaton Fold Garden Centre is unlike supermarkets and big stores that will sell you forced flowering plants you’ll end up having to buy again! We know there’s a risk of frost right till the end of May and always make our customers aware of this. However baskets and containers can be planted up now if you can protect them in a cold greenhouse, airy shed or porch; new for 2016 we are offering a six pack mixed bedding tray with a handy carrying handle for only £3.99, excellent value. See below for more details.
A cracking Easter’s in s at the Mark
Plant Spring vegetables Once the soil has warmed up and the danger of frost is past, it’s time to start sowing vegetable seeds. Crops such as broad beans, carrots, leeks and peas can all be sown in Spring, for a delicious harvest later in the year. It’s best to buy your vegetable seeds from a reputable seed supplier as not only will the crop be of high quality, but you will also receive specific advice on how best to sow the seeds and care for the plants.

ASK THE VET ... Q: My dog seems itchier recently, but I de-flea him every month, what could it be? A: We all scratch a bit, but recurrent or excessive scratching can have many causes. If we assume you’re using a quality flea control product, using it correctly, and treating all the pets at home at the same time, then we’ll discount fleas as the cause. Many of our pets now suffer with allergies just like humans do. These can be to a wide variety of things in the environment, which we call ‘allergens’. Typically they will rub their head and ears, or scratch armpits or groin. Any redness in these areas would be suspicious, especially if recurrent. If the skin is changing (becoming blacker, or thickened) then the problem has been there for a while, often without owners noticing. This is what we call a subclinical problem. Much less common, but much more serious, is if the scratching is due a neoplastic or tumour-related change in or under the skin. Your vet should be able to take a thorough history of the problem and give you the options to identify the cause. Q: My dog has always been fatter than my sister’s dog, but we walk them together and they are fed the same food. I’ve tried feeding him less but he isn’t losing weight. A: Sadly more than half of UK dogs are now overweight. Just like us, this can have a lot of long term health implications. In most cases the overweight dog is fundamentally healthy, it’s a lifestyle problem. Many owners underestimate how much food their pet is actually eating, or overestimate how much they genuinely need. In dogs prone to weight gain, there is no substitute for accurately weighing out their food.
Some dogs won’t lose weight unless on a weight-losing diet. Secret treats or well-intentioned relatives are so often the problem that needs identifying and correcting. To be healthy, dogs need a good amount of exercise, and for some breeds this may mean several hours of running and playing off the lead every day. A 30 min stroll around the park, on a lead, just isn’t the same. In a small proportion of cases there can be a genuine medical problem with the thyroid gland, or hypothyroidism, resulting in a tendency to weight gain. A natural overproduction of steroids (Cushing’s Disease) should be considered, as may the side effects of some medications your dog may be on. Your vet will be able to check for these possibilities with blood tests. Older dogs with mobility or heart problems will also exercise less and should get veterinary attention to help their problems Q: My cat keeps bringing dead mice and birds into the house. How do I stop him? A: Many cats are innate hunters. This basic instinct has been developed over thousands of years, to feed themselves, to provide for a litter and to train their young how to hunt. Whilst the modern pet cat has no nutritional need to hunt, they are still driven to do so. Whilst a collar with bells and a metal identity tag will make approaching prey silently a little harder, many active hunters will still manage just fine. We could consider keeping cats inside, as some people who favour garden birds over cats will advocate, but we must also allow our pets to display a range of normal behaviours for their physical and mental wellbeing. To confine a cat that has a strong desire to go outside would be a welfare compromise, and likely result in abnormal stress related behaviours. In short most cat owners will need to accept that a level of hunting is normal, to not encourage birds into their gardens with feeders etc, and to maintain a high level of parasite control for their pet.

Transforming Smiles As an implant centre of excellence, Douglas Lee Dental Associates recently carried out its 150th ‘Fast and Fixed’ same- day implant procedure, a technique that has transformed the smiles, and the lives, of many patients...
BEFORE
Leading the way in UK implant technology is Lancashire-based Douglas Lee, who was one of the first dentists in the country to adopt the highly successful pioneering ‘Fast and Fixed’ technique. The ‘Fast and Fixed’ implant procedure has made Douglas Lee Dental Associates a flagship practice and teaching surgery for the Germanpioneered technique, Testament to their skills, the team at Douglas Lee Dental were the first in the UK to carry out a full set of upper and lower jaw implants in the same day.

After reading about the procedure, sales consultant Jacqueline Shonn called Douglas Lee Dental and arranged for a consultation: “I am 55 but I am not an old 55 and I had to wear dentures on either side of my lower teeth, which I hated with a vengeance! They made me feel old!

we previously had to resort to prosthetics like removable dentures. Dental implants are a wonderful improvement on these.” Jackie had lost a number of her teeth and with several failing teeth still in place, she also needed work on her gums. Sedated, Jackie was then painlessly fitted with her lower implants. During their years of experience, the team at Douglas Lee Dental Associates have refined the ‘Fast and Fixed’ procedure and have state-of-the-art in-house technology at their fingertips. Sedation ensures that no pain is felt and the patient remains relaxed throughout the experience. “To be honest before the procedure I felt quite wary but, it was amazing, I felt no pain or discomfort. I also had four teeth removed and it was still better than going to the dentist for a filling!” says Jackie.

Preparation is the key to the success and the team of dental nurses, dental technicians, cosmetic dentist Usman Riaz and Dougie himself, all play their part on the day. ‘’No two smiles are the same, so there is no ‘one-size-fits all’ when it comes to this level of cosmetic dentistry, ’’ says Usman. “Carrying out our 150th procedure was quite a milestone for us and like all the

Men In Sheds Join in, have fun and learn new skills cooking demonstrations and an outdoor seating area.
Age UK Bolton is committed to encouraging and supporting older people to remain as physically, mentally and socially active as possible for as long as possible. Sadly because of transitions in life such as retirement, unemployment, bereavement, relationship breakdown and poor health many people can become socially isolated and lonely. This in turn impacts their mental and physical health and as men are one of the hardest groups for healthcare services to reach, and tend to be reluctant to ask for help from their GP or other healthcare professionals, it can be hard for them to access the support they need. Age UK Bolton are delighted therefore to be launching a new “Men in Sheds” project in New Bury, Farnworth in partnership with Bolton Council and Bolton at Home. The aim of the project is to reach out to local older men who may have become isolated from their friends and communities, by offering a safe, relaxed and
welcoming space to come together and work on different projects. The project is based in sites around New Bury and Farnworth and offers a number of activities including woodworking, metalwork, gardening and food growing skills and smallscale construction projects. The Men in Sheds project was launched at the beginning of May and is currently based at Willow Hey Community Gardening Project in Farnworth. This relaxing and engaging location provides a haven of tranquillity and is the ideal retreat away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. The site boasts an array of facilities including a 36ft shed, complete with workbenches, vices and woodworking tools, a brand new large poly tunnel incorporating a small educational area, and a large greenhouse that houses a grapevine which last year gave rise to a number of bottles of ‘Chateau Willow Hey’ wine! There are also free range chickens producing eggs for the local community, a fire pit which can be used for outdoor
The sessions, led by Lee Harrison, Men in Sheds Co-ordinator for Age UK Bolton, alongside a small team of enthusiastic, dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers will ensure that everyone who comes along to the group will be made to feel very welcome and part of the team from the start. The project is aimed primarily at men aged 50+ from the Farnworth and surrounding areas. No previous skills or experience are required to get involved as there are plenty of people on site who will be more than willing to offer a helping hand.
The project runs from 10am – 1pm Monday to Friday at Willow Hey Community Garden which is at the end of Doe Hey Grove, Farnworth BL4 7HS.
If you, or someone you know, would like more information about the project or would like to go along to visit the site, please ring Heather Crook, Community Services Manager on 01204 701525 or email heathercrook@ageukbolton.org.uk 42

FOOD & DRINK JAMES MARTIN’S
HOME COMFORTS C hicken cordon bleu It’s ham, cheese and chicken: that’s all. It’s a simple dish, but like many things in life, the simplest are the best. Cook the escalope in plenty of butter, not oil. By the time the butter is nut- brown, the chicken should be ready to turn over and cook on the other side. You need to allow the middle to become hot, to melt the cheese inside.
Serves 4 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts 175g Emmental cheese, cut into 8 chunks 4 good-quality thick ham slices 75g plain flour 3 eggs, lightly beaten 150g panko breadcrumbs sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 150g unsalted butter 300g French beans, trimmed 25g flaked almonds Cut the chicken breasts in half widthways nearly all the way through then open out to a heart shape. Lay a large piece of clingfilm on a work surface, and place the chicken on top. Cover with another sheet of clingfilm and gently bat out with a rolling pin until about double the size and 1cm thick. Remove the clingfilm and lay two pieces of cheese over one half of each chicken breast, then fold the ham on top. Fold the other half of the chicken over to enclose the cheese and ham, and press down lightly. Place the flour, eggs and breadcrumbs in separate bowls, each big enough to take a chicken breast. Season the flour and eggs with salt and pepper, then pass the chicken first through the flour, then the eggs, then the breadcrumbs, coating fully. Put 125g of the butter into a large frying pan and set over a medium heat. When the butter is just melted, add the chicken and cook for 4–5 minutes on one side until the butter is golden brown, then turn and cook for another 4–5 minutes. Baste the chicken with the melted butter as it cooks, keeping it over a medium heat. You don’t want the butter or breadcrumbs to

burn, and you want the chicken to be cooked all the way through and the cheese melted. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil. Add the beans and cook for 3–4 minutes until just tender, then drain. Put the pan back on the heat and add the last of the butter and the flaked almonds. Heat until the butter is melted, then toss the beans into the butter and warm through. Season well. Serve the chicken with the beans alongside.

O yster and seafood pie with samphire I don’t know that ‘posh’ is the right word for this really, as although it uses oysters and lobster, you can get hold of both of these easily nowadays. It does use a fair bit of champagne, but you can always use prosecco instead. The grated potatoes make a great topping – just give them a thorough squeeze to remove any excess water. Serves 4–6 140g unsalted butter 2 heaped tablespoons plain flour 600ml double cream 350ml champagne sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 500g salmon, boneless and skinless, cut into chunks 400g smoked haddock, boneless and skinless, cut into chunks 1kg cooked lobster, shelled and cut into chunks 8 oysters, shucked 350g raw king prawns, shelled and deveined 100g samphire 1kg white potatoes, peeled and coarsely grated 3 egg yolks 200g frozen peas
Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/gas mark 7. Put 75g of the butter into a saucepan and heat until melted, then add the flour and cook for 2 minutes until thickened and light golden-brown. Add the cream gradually, whisking all the time, and cook until thickened and smooth. Pour the champagne in a steady stream into the sauce, still whisking all the time, until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, then season to taste with salt and pepper. Place the salmon, smoked haddock, lobster, oysters, prawns and samphire in a large ovenproof dish. Pour the sauce over the top to coat everything.
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
Put the grated potato into a clean tea towel and squeeze all the liquid from it. Place in a bowl. Melt 50g of the remaining butter in a saucepan, then mix with the potato and egg yolks and plenty of salt and black pepper. Sprinkle over the top of the fish, then place on a baking sheet in the oven and bake for 30 minutes until golden and hot through. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil, add the peas and cook for 2–3 minutes until tender. Drain and return to the pan, add the remaining butter and season to taste. Serve with the fish pie.

E nglish apricot and almond bake When you make the frangipane, make sure to mix the butter and sugar together until they are white, and then fold in the flour by hand to help keep it as light as possible. It’s best not to keep the bake in the fridge, as the butter will harden up – if you have to, warm it through in a low oven before serving.
Your perfect recipe needs top quality ingredients...
Makes 15 pieces 375g shop-bought sweet pastry 200g unsalted butter, softened 200g caster sugar 3 large eggs 200g plain flour 125g ground almonds 1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder 150g apricot jam 8 fresh apricots, stoned and quartered Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas mark 3. Grease and line a 30 x 23cm traybake tin. Roll out the pastry to 5mm thick and about 2cm larger than your tin. Roll it onto the rolling pin, then roll it over the tin. Press gently into the corners, then trim the excess from the edges. Place in the fridge while you make the filling. Place the butter and sugar in a food mixer or a large bowl, and beat for 5 minutes until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs one at a time. Remove from the mixer and fold in the flour, ground almonds and baking powder.
Bury Market, winner of BBC Radio 4’s Food and Farming Awards (Best Food Market) really has it all.
Cover the pastry with the apricot jam, then spoon over the filling and smooth out to the edges. Lay the apricot halves gently on top, in rows, and bake for 35–40 minutes until golden-brown and risen. A skewer inserted into the centre of the cake should come out clean; if it doesn’t, return it to the oven for a further 5 minutes and repeat.
Great quality produce at great value prices, brought fresh to market every day!
Leave the cake to cool in the tin, then cut into rectangles to serve.

MANHUNT UNDERWAY! Bolton Cancer Voices have launched a manhunt to rebalance the timbre of their Choir after finding the women of the Choir outnumber the men by over 6-1! Formed in June 2012, the Choir has only one criterion for membership and that is that you must have received a cancer diagnosis at some point in your life. People from across the North West and beyond can join, as long as they are able to travel to the centre of Bolton for rehearsals. Previous choral experience isn’t necessary; there is no requirement to read music, no auditions to worry about and membership is FREE! Though brought together by cancer, the Choir is united by their love of singing, the desire to have fun and their wish to entertain and inspire others. Last year they undertook six concerts / appearances and this year’s programme got underway with a concert at the beginning of the month at the Theatre Royal, Ramsbottom, where they were guests of the Square Street Singers. With a growing repertoire, which embraces many genres of music, the Choir offers cancer patients and cancer survivors an informal forum to meet with others, who are or have been, in a similar situation as themselves. It provides a weekly opportunity to focus on something positive and enjoyable and can provide a much-needed distraction at a time when it may feel that cancer has become all-consuming.
The Choir rehearses on Monday evenings at the Friends Meeting House, in Bolton. To find out more about this inspirational Choir call Karen on 01204 595562 / 07773 164235 or visit their website – www.boltoncancervoices.org.uk The photograph shows members of Bolton Cancer Voices, their Musical Director – Clive Rushworth, and the Square Street Singers on stage at the Theatre Royal, Ramsbottom.

water play areas and even a mini shop and a mini kitchen. They are all built out of natural products, colourfully set against a winding “Yellow Brick Road” and grassy areas. There’s even a nod to Bolton’s history and coat-of-arms with a carved elephant! The adventure area proved a hit with the many children who attended the official opening with their equally entranced mums, dads and grandparents alike.
Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Carole Swarbrick, officially opening the Outdoor Adventure area with owner Catalina Sastre-Done. THE “young customers” immediately endorsed a new £200,000 venture when it opened on Wingates Industrial Park in Westhoughton. The occasion was the official opening of the new Party & Play Funhouse “Outdoor Adventure” – an imaginative, natural play area created for owner Catalina SastreDone by award-winning Bolton company Cool Canvas Ltd.
The latest addition to the successful leisure business marked another milestone for Ms Sastre-Done who opened her indoor play centre in 2007 and then moved to new purpose-built premises close by in 2013 because she needed to expand the facilities available. The new area adjoining the centre has everything to absorb children – from a zip wire and trampoline to tree houses, bridges, a Hobbit hole, a maze, sand and
And eight year-old Noah Wotherspoon, son of Cool Canvas boss Oliver Wotherspoon, really enjoyed the trampoline. His Dad was delighted with the success of the project. “It’s our biggest project to date and we’re really pleased with it,” he commented. Ms Sastre-Done said she was “really thrilled” with the area. “Cool Canvas have done a fantastic job here,” she stated. “They worked with such passion and craftsmanship it was wonderful to see it gradually coming to life. And just great to see the children enjoying it so much.” The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Carole Swarbrick, opened the new area and described it as “just amazing – I’m sure all youngsters will love it, and so will their parents.”

spaces left by missing teeth with a fixed solution that avoids the need for removable dentures, whether they are partial or even full dentures.
What are the advantages of implants compared to dentures? Even a well-fitting denture will never be the same as having natural teeth. Dentures move when you are eating, talking or laughing, and often adhesive is required to help to hold them in place. The palate covering the roof of the mouth can take away the enjoyment of eating and drinking, and can also be a place for food and bacteria to lodge, leading to bad breath or gum disease. Dental implants provide a solution as close as possible to your own teeth, giving a great appearance and the ability to eat any foods with complete confidence. There is no bulky plate, and the teeth are not taken out for cleaning or removed overnight.

Fostering in Bolton leads to new lease of life
Can I Foster? The minimum requirements to become a foster carer are: l
You are over 21 years of age
l
You have permanent residency in the UK
l
You have a spare room
l
If you are planning to foster as a couple, you should have been together for at least 2 years
As well as meeting the above requirements you will need to enjoy being with children and young people and have the time and commitment to make a difference to a child or young person’s life. If you can provide a warm and caring family home for children who need one we would love to hear from you. You can register your interest and download an information pack with no obligation. We have different types of fostering which may be suitable for your personal and family circumstances these include: short term, long term and short break care.
In the UK Children’s Services teams work very hard to enable children to keep living within their own families whenever possible. If this cannot happen there are several options available, these include Placement with extended family, adoption, foster care and residential settings. Children need to be looked after by the Local Authority for all sorts of reasons. These include death of parents, domestic violence, parental alcohol or drug misuse and abuse. Each child that comes into the care system has individual needs and the court system will decide on the type of care best suited to them. Local authority children’s services Social Workers are then responsible for finding a suitable placement for them.
Short term fostering If you become a short term foster carer you will look after a child with a view to that child moving on. This may be back to family, to an adoptive placement or into a long term foster placement.
64
Short term placements can last anything from a single day up to 3 years and will be different for every child. If there are serious concerns about a child’s welfare and safety this may also involve the courts in making decisions about the child’s future. Because of this short term foster carers need a great deal of flexibility and resilience.
Long term fostering Adoption is not appropriate for every child and some children may not be able to return home or go to other family members. When this is the case children may need long term foster carers to provide stability and a caring and loving family environment until they reach independence. A child may keep in contact with their birth family even though they are not able to live with them on a permanent basis and foster carers are expected to promote this and include this as part of their family life.
At Bolton Council we understand the importance of training, support and advice for our foster carers. All our foster carers are offered regular training which includes day time and evening sessions. You will have your own supervising social worker who will visit you on a regular basis. The team also has support workers, a children emotional health worker and offers support groups and a buddy system as well as a 24 hour emergency phone line. Foster carers also receive financial rewards to help them to provide the best possible care for the children they look after, as well as recognise their skills and commitment.
The following story is a real account from and will give some insight as to what it’s really like to foster. www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
This first hand experience is the perfect way to explore and understand the benefits to all.
Pearl and Arthur Pearl and Arthur Lord have been foster Carers for 14 years. They have three boys of their own and have looked after about 20 children — four of whom still live with them. Pearl said: “My husband will agree with me when I say that it has been the most challenging but also the most rewarding thing we have ever done. I used to work as a nurse but I decided I wanted to devote my time to fostering and I love it. I enjoy working from home and it doesn’t feel like work at all. We make the children part of the family and I can’t think of anything else that I’d rather do.” The couple welcomed Rachel, then aged five, to their home in 2001. Pearl said “Rachel was the first child that we fostered and she’s still with us now aged 19. She had very challenging behaviour at first but now she is as much a part of the family as our boys, and always helps us with the other children.” Three years after Rachel arrived, her sister
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
Claire, now 16, was fostered by the couple. Claire also still lives with them and they also have two other longterm placements, James aged 15, and Melanie aged 10. Pearl said: “Initially we did worry about the kinds of challenges we would face, but you get an abundance of information beforehand from social services and there has never been a child that we have said no to. The key is never to be afraid to ask for help or advice if you need it. You need to be consistent with behaviour and set firm but fair boundaries and explain all the time why you have set them. As a couple, you both need to be dedicated to doing it, going to school assemblies and parents evenings as well as juggling social service visits.”
Pearl said that the role is not all plain sailing, and that sadness can sometimes come with the territory. “It has been very difficult at times, one in particular was a young boy we fostered for a couple of years whose parents could not look after him. We would have loved to have continued looking after him but members of his extended family came forward to take him. While it was a positive thing for him and it is right he stays with his family, it was the hardest thing we have ever had to deal with. However, the rewards outweigh the challenges. Fostering is not a role for everyone, and certainly not something to rush into or take lightly, but if there is room in your house and room in your heart you should not hesitate to do it.”
If you think you might be interested in becoming a foster carer for Bolton Council, we would love to hear from you. There are several ways to contact us. You can telephone 0800 107 1564 and our team will help you complete a short telephone questionnaire to assess you initial suitability to foster. You can also fill in the on-line enquiry form and a member of our team will contact you, visit www.bolton.gov.uk/fostering.

Dementia can affect anyone so make your LPA There are 850,000 people living with Dementia in the UK. 225,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year – that’s about one person every three minutes. While age is the most significant contributing factor to dementia, it’s not just the ‘old’ that develop it; one out of 20 people living with the condition are under the age of 65. Figures recently released by the Office of National Statistics revealed that in 2015, an additional 28,189 deaths were registered compared with 2014. 86% of this increase consisted of people aged 75 and over – a figure of 24,201, of which 41% had an underlying cause of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia isn’t an actual disease; it’s an all-encompassing term used to describe a collective group of symptoms that occur when brain cells stop working properly. While most people associate dementia with memory loss, the condition affects people in a wide variety of ways. These include changes in behaviour, confusion and disorientation, delusions and hallucinations, difficulty communicating, problems judging speeds and distances, even craving for particular foods.
66
Interestingly, there are more women in the UK living with dementia than men. Of the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, 500,000 of them are women. This may be because more women are living well into their 80s – nearly three in four people aged over 90 are women. According to Alzheimer’s research, women over 60 are twice as likely to develop dementia as they are of getting breast cancer and after the age of 65, the risk of dementia doubles every five years. The four main conditions that make up dementia are Alzheimer’s, Vascular dementia, Dementia with Lewy bodies and Frontotemporal dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for about two-thirds of cases in the elderly. Vascular dementia occurs when blood flow to the brain becomes reduced. Some people have both vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease which is often referred to as mixed dementia.
Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a type of dementia that shares symptoms with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Tiny deposits of protein, known as Lewy bodies, form in the brain’s nerve cells. Although it’s not understood why they appear, or how they contribute to dementia, their presence is linked to low levels of important chemical messengers and to a loss of connections between nerve cells which, over time, causes the death of nerve cells and loss of brain tissue. Some people can show features of both Alzheimer’s and DLB. Frontotemporal dementia, or FTD, is relatively rare and thought to account for less than 5% of all dementia cases. It’s caused by damage to cells in areas of the brain called the frontal and temporal lobes, which regulate personality, emotions and behaviour, reasoning, planning and decisionmaking as well as the understanding and production of language. It usually affects people between the ages of 45 and 64, although three out of every 10 people develop the condition at an older age. Being diagnosed with a degenerative mental illness such as dementia ultimately means there are likely to be problems with maintaining your independence. Support will be critical for your wellbeing, but once your
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
mental ability starts to fail, your way of life could end up being decided by strangers. This is why it’s important to make arrangements for your care in case a time comes when you can’t do it yourself. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that effectively gives someone else the right to act for you and make decisions on your behalf. This person – or more than one person if you prefer – is referred to as your attorney. Anyone can be your attorney, as long as they’re over 18. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney. The first focuses on your personal welfare, while the other deals with your financial affairs. You’re not obliged to take out both LPAs but if you do, you can have the same attorney for both or they can be different. A health and welfare LPA allows your attorney to make decisions about your well-being. This covers a wide variety of issues, for example your day-to-day care including medication, your diet and how you live. You can even give your attorney the power to accept or refuse life-sustaining treatment on your behalf. A property and affairs LPA addresses the material things in your life. This can include paying your bills, collecting your income and benefits, conducting your financial affairs or even selling your house. This is quite a responsibility so if you wish, you can place restrictions or conditions about what your attorney can do within your LPA. One thing to be aware of with a property and affairs LPA is that your attorney isn’t allowed to have been declared bankrupt. No one likes to think they could develop life limiting conditions, but the reality is that dementia is indiscriminate. It can affect any of us at any time in later life, so it’s reassuring to know that if you’re unable to make a decision yourself, they’ll be someone who can. Because you’ll have chosen this person yourself, you’ll know they will have your best interests at heart and will make decisions based on what you want, rather than leaving it to a stranger or someone you don’t trust. The key to a Lasting Power of Attorney, however, is that you can only set one up when you’re well. Once you’ve lost capacity, it’s too late because the law deems that you’re not deciding for yourself that you want to make a LPA and that you don’t understand what it means, so timing really is of the essence. If you’re interested in drafting your LPA, Russell and Russell offers a free no obligation consultation to guide you through the regulations and to discuss what’s right for your circumstances. www.russellrussell.co.uk

HEALTH
Quality dentures mean a quality lifestyle The Importance of Dentures
•
The eyes, nose and teeth are the focal points of every face; they give the first impressions of your personality.
• •
Natural teeth grow in proportion and in harmony with your facial features and your dentures should be made accordingly. Your teeth, or your dentures, have many important functions: to support your facial muscles, to help formulate your speech, and most importantly to chew your food and start the digestive process. It is very important to chew food properly, as poorly chewed food will take longer to digest, especially for the elderly who could risk problems in the digestive system.
Choice of Dentures There are four main quality standards in denture materials. The denture base (gum coloured on which the denture teeth sit). • • 68
Standard Quality High Impact Acrylics (much stronger)
Injection Pressure Formed (Premium Denture Base) Flexible (Partial Dentures) Metal Denture
The Denture Teeth • • • •
2 Layer Acrylic (economy) 3 Layer Acrylic (harder wearing) 4 Layer Reinforced (hard wearing, natural look) N.F.C. (Nano filled composite) premium teeth.
Of course, the materials alone will not make a good denture. In the hands of a skillful and experienced Clinical Dental Technician the best results are achieved.
Dentures Need Regular Servicing Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are also in a pretty hostile environment in the mouth, being attacked by strong acid, bacteria, hot, cold and spicy food. Denture material absorbs liquids and food odour. Daily cleaning is essential as well as professional ultrasonic cleaning in a dental laboratory at least once a
year. Due to constant bone resorbtion dentures will become loose sooner or later. Loose dentures will increase damage to the gums and bone structure, and increase the risk of breakage. Have them re-lined as soon as possible to get a good fit. It only takes a day or two. Have your dentures inspected by a Clinical Dental Technician at least every two years, or more frequently if necessary.
Your Dentures need Attention 1. When they become loose. 2. When teeth or denture base discolours. 3. When tooth surfaces become flat. 4. When denture base does not fit around natural teeth (in partial dentures). 5. When you develop deep lines around your mouth. 6. When your chin sticks out, and the corners of your lips are constantly wet, developing sores. 7. When you stop smiling and feel embarrassed.
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
My Dentures have become loose!
Should I have a spare set of Dentures made?
This is easily remedied by a procedure know as Re-lining. A new layer of Denture base is added to your existing Denture, improving the fit and restoring confidence.
Yes, it is very important to have a spare set of dentures for emergencies in case of breakage.
Dentures with worn down teeth Teeth excessively worn, require a new set of dentures.
Dentures on Implants
This type of Denture is constructed in conjunction with the Dental Implant Surgeon. This is a very good procedure when the patient has limited control and retention of their Dentures. The finished Dentures ‘click’ into position offering the ultimate in Denture Retention.
Major improvements in Facial Features Padding dentures to reduce lines and fill up sunken cheeks will require a new set of dentures. It is advisable to have a new set of dentures made every 5 to 10 years.
Difficulties in Constructing a Good Set of Dentures Constructing a functional and aesthetically pleasing set of dentures is the most difficult task in dentistry. We are not only replacing lost teeth, but also lost tissue matter and bone. In other words, we have to re-create your facial features as they were before the loss of your natural teeth. In most cases we do not know what your teeth looked like, what size they were or what position they were in originally. We have a few indications but mostly we have to rely on our visual and artistic judgement. At the same time we have to use our technical expertise in order to make the denture stable and functional. Denture construction is more art than science.
What is a Clinical Dental Technician?
under gone further Education and Training in areas such as Medical Emergencies Cross Infection Control and Oral Pathology (cancers and anomalies) to name just a few sections that make up the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology as Awarded by the Royal Collage of Surgeons (RCS). It is this qualification that allows the clinicians at Bolton Denture Centure to be able to be registered and regulated with the General Dental Council (the official body for protecting the public with regards to dentistry) and carry indemnity insurance. It is this qualification, which means that only Dentists and Clinical Dental Technicians are the only Dental Professionals permitted to supply dentures direst to the public. A dental technician is not qualified to supply a denture directly to the public. However, despite this being an act of Mal practice many technicians will still practice illegally without informing the patient that they are not qualified. If you are unsure if your denture provider is qualified; ask them for their GDC registration number, then contact the GDC to see if they are registered not just as a dental technician but as a CDT.

children have the same access to each other’s incomes in the event of a split as married ones do. THIS IS UNTRUE. They have no rights personally, against their partner although there are some rights in respect of children. Whilst there have been discussions about giving cohabitees the same rights as married partners, nothing has come from this and there is no sign that the position will change in the foreseeable future. Charlotte Beck, Head of Family Law
Yes, providing that (1) the tenancy is an Assured Shorthold Tenancy and (2) it states in it that the landlord can terminate the tenancy if there are rent arrears. In those circumstances, if the rent is paid monthly, you can serve a specific notice under the Housing Act requiring the tenant to give back possession. Be careful though; there are different types of notice and you have to make sure the one you serve is correct. We advise seeking legal assistance with this. If the tenant fails to give back possession, you can issue a court claim for repossession and include your claim for rent arrears as well. Stephen McArdle, Commercial Litigation Associate Solicitor
Do Grandparents have any right to paid or unpaid leave to spend time with Grandchildren? Under current legislation Grandparents have no rights. However the Government intends to extend current Shared Parental Leave provisions to include working Grandparents by 2018. The proposals were announced recently and is an interesting move towards giving Grandparents new employment rights.
My partner and I are going through a separation. We’re not married but have been living together for 10 years and split our income. Surely I have rights to half of his assets and income?
Shared Parental Leave has had a low take-up by cash-strapped parents. Grandparents are more likely to be financially able to afford to take Shared Parental Leave allowing more women to return to work early knowing their baby will be looked after by the child’s

Do I need to make a Will? What happens if I don’t? A Will is easy to overlook, you keep meaning to get round to doing one or you think, “I don’t want to tempt fate”; “I’ve not got much to leave so I don’t really need one”. However a Will is one of the single most important things you can do; yet six in ten of us never make a Will! If you die without making a Will the assets which you leave will pass to your next of kin according to rules laid down by law. If you make a Will you can decide who should benefit from your estate, make arrangements for guardians to be appointed for young children and decide who you want to be responsible for making sure your instructions are carried out. CARE entitled to financial help to maintain your own home. To find out what sort of help you could get, your local trust will assess your health and social care needs. It is important to tell the health and social care trust what will make your everyday life easier. You may also be entitled to ‘direct payments’. These are trust payments available for anyone who has been assessed as needing social care, and who would like to buy services instead of receiving the trust’s services. For example, direct payments could be used to pay a home help.
