Twittering On WITH TYLER GRUNDY

Literally no one is going to watch ‘Paul Hollywood’s Great British Bake Off’.

It seems as though we are in luck. While surfing the realms of Twitter compiling this article for you lucky readers today, I came across some telling statistics. Now it is not my intention to bore you with mindless numbers and figures, although I have been called a ‘Statto’ numerous times over the years. Just this one will do;

I for one will certainly view with interest the Channel 4 version of the show to see what they can squander together. If the show does become a dead loss, I will certainly miss 9pm in our house on a Wednesday evening when the cake goes in the oven, having spent the previous hour drooling over bake off wonders.

51% of adults aged between 55-64 regularly use social media.

How to spot a Brit?

This is according to the Office of National Statistics. So, at the conclusion of this article do not hold back your desire to post a Tweet on a topic of your choosing. Let your voice be heard, after all that is what Twitter is all about. Anyway, let us get into it.

“Breadxit” Undoubtedly, many of you will recognize the two figures above. Indeed, for many a Brit they have become synonymous with Wednesday evenings. The Great British Bake Off or GBBO as commonly abbreviated (and hash tagged on Twitter) is one of the BBC’s most popular and well-watched shows. However, viewers have recently been handed a pie to the face. I imagine it failed to pass the majority of you by, that the BBC had sold the show to Channel 4. The uproar soon followed.

inside

Paul Hollywood & Mary Berry on the Great British Bake Off

And it soon became clear that Channel 4 had purchased a tent and a bread maker. By that, I mean the silver fox Paul Hollywood. Co-Hosts, the commonly known Mel and Sue, soon after announced they would be departing from the show. I guess you could say the dough was failing to rise for Channel 4. When the nation’s favorite grandma, as she has been coined, announced her leave as well, Twitter and the nation went into meltdown. Just a note, if my Gran was known to party the night away on the isle of Ibiza, as Mary is known to do, I must admit I am not too sure how I would feel. As one Twitter user put it and many seemed to agree;

It came to my attention that while writing this piece for you, Britain was celebrating the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. Now, due to my historical background I feel obliged to bring this up. So please do bear with me. In case you did not know, the battle was fought between William of Normandy (the invader) against the English King Harold. Admittedly, I am not here to give you a history lesson, no doubt you already know this. And I am certain, even if I had not told you it was the 950th anniversary then you would know the year. Here lies the essence of how to spot a Brit. Twitter seems to be in unanimous agreement about this. Hastings Direct has long been advertising on our television screens with the catchy jingle and memorable phone number. If you are struggling to recall, it is the one with the seagull if I am not mistaken. The jingle goes, 0800… wait for it…1066. The point

TWITTER being calling out 0800, if one would reply with 1066 then you most certainly have found yourself a fellow Brit.

Together Again. I am sure, all of you will be familiar with the comedic and indeed, genius double act that was Morecambe and Wise. Now for the first time, they stand together again in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens. The statue that has been unveiled just this month is the first of the two together while the two men, have their own individual statues respectably in Morecambe and Leeds. Blackpool is really the spiritual home of the pair. They performed numerous times at the seaside resort before their real shoot to fame. Myself being a massive fan of the pair, I feel I should take this opportunity to regale you with my own personal favorite sketch. I think it was the first clip I saw of the two and hence why it has stuck with me and I still find it hilarious to this day. ‘The Banana Boat song’, I would recommend a quick search on YouTube if you are failing to recall the sketch. A smile and a laugh I can guarantee.

Get yo’ Wellies Out. Glastonbury, the famous British festival has sold out…again. Now do not get me wrong I understand the buzz of seeing your favorite music act up close and personal…but with Glastonbury it just is not that simple. Standard tickets for the festival, which holds 135,000 amongst its vast grassy plains, have all been snapped up. Although, many of them will now find their way upon the Internet black market selling for ludicrous amounts of money. So let us say, you were one of the lucky ones who managed to get tickets. Well currently, not one act has been announced. Oh, I do love a risk taker. Come that faithful weekend in June that band you have always wanted to see and quite possibly just sold half your material belongings for, just to get that Glastonbury golden ticket might not even be there. Here is the real risk though, relying on the Great British weather to provide the sort of sun and warmth of the likes of Costa Brava over a bunch of fields in Somerset. It very rarely happens. The festival campsite soon becomes a bog. You can keep the bikini and speedos in the draw for this weekend more often than not, a rain mac and a pair of wellies is usually the safest attire.

Being totally independent and not tied to particular brands or products means we can offer a personal service and extensive ranges that larger, high street practices can only wish for. Our totally dedicated team will ensure your visit is a welcoming, unhurried personal experience with every customer receiving only the highest standards of eyecare and choice.

sponsored by which means that you’ll meet others just like you. There’s an extra bonus too – a tour manager who ensures that all the logistical hassles are taken care of and that the group ‘gels’ together. And then there are local guides, who share their inside knowledge and help bring destinations alive. On sporting trips, coaches are on hand to match up players, so you enjoy your games and improve too. Some of the major coach tour companies organise singles only trips around the UK and Europe too, which provides yet another option!

Beach and hotel holidays

Singles holidays by J ennie C arr f rom S ilv er T rav el A d v isor Singles travelling on holiday can celebrate! You are a fast-growing group of people and the options are getting more plentiful by the month. Tour operators and cruise lines are now vying to bring you the perfect trip. What could be better? We know it seems daunting when you think about taking your first trip alone – we’ve been in the same shoes. However, from all reports, once you’ve taken the first brave step, there is no looking back. You might even wonder what took you so long!

Cruises I recently spoke to a single lady in her 60s who told me she loved cruising because it is safe, she knows that the ship is secure and that should anything happen, she’ll be missed. More and more cruise lines are re-fitting or building with single cabins, all just as comfortable as doubles! And what’s more, coffee mornings and activities are organised for those travelling alone,

6

so you can meet others in the same situation. At dinner, singles’ dining tables are allocated, so if you’d like to be sociable, you can be. Excursion companions and dancing partners are often available too. So you can cruise around the UK coast, voyage to Antarctica or visit sites around the Mediterranean, comfortable in the certainty that you’ll be included in all the activities and well looked after. Saga Holidays have now started offering river cruises just for singles too!

Escorted tours and activities holidays These are a real joy for the solo traveller. You’re joining a friendly group, all who have a similar interest, whether it be going to historic British houses and gardens, playing tennis, walking on islands, visiting ancient Greek ruins or meeting pandas in China. There really is a holiday for everyone. And interestingly, many tour companies tell us that between a third and a half of everyone travelling this way are holidaying on their own,

If you’d like to flop and drop, with company when you choose, there is a wide range of places to go, around Europe or beyond. Singles’ specialists, Solos Holidays have an extensive range of places to get away to where the sun shines, the beach is glorious and the pool all yours. Quite often, the hotels they use are exclusively theirs, so everyone is a fellow solo traveller. And if activities are on offer, you’re free to join in or not. Sometimes a day on the sun lounger is just too tempting. In the UK, Solos Holidays, Warner Leisure Hotels offer hotel breaks with zero or limited supplements. Go on, why not spoil yourself?

Top Tips We are frequently asked about single supplements, which can be a barrier to those travelling alone. Several cruise lines, escorted touring companies and activities holiday specialists offer same sex sharing to avoid the supplement. Just ask when booking, and if no else wants to share, you then have the room to yourself. However, many companies have great offers with no or low supplements, it’s just a question of enquiring. Always be willing to request the best price or the latest deals – you may be surprised at what’s available. These are sometimes missing from websites and brochures. Ask and you just may receive!

Travelling through airports by Jennie Carr from Silver Travel Advisor Airports can be heaven or can be hell, so Silver Travel Advisor have teamed up with Your Service Centre Gatwick in partnership with Sky Break, to make life just that little bit easier. You can receive a printed copy of The Silver Travellers’ Guide to Gatwick Airport, free of charge through the post or electronically, by going to www. silvertraveladvisor.com and typing Gatwick guide into the search box, top right hand side. If you are flying from another UK airport and wish to familiarise yourself with the lie of the land, you can find real maps and terminal diagrams at www. airportguides.co.uk or by visiting the airport’s own website. From Aberdeen to Southend, with many in between, this information can really help you plan your airport experience. And this is particularly helpful if you prefer

to use a lift instead of the escalators, or require an accessible toilet. Many special features of the airports are clearly marked so when you do arrive, you can confidently get to where you need to go. And should you be spending time in transit, it’s a good idea to take a look at the facilities at this airport too. It’s always worth remembering that you are entitled to special assistance, should you need it, from the door of the airport to the foot of the aircraft steps, and this should be provided by the airport. You can call well in advance to advise of your mobility requirements, talk to the airline or travel agent if you can’t find the airport number on line. You might also decide to take advantage of a ‘Meet and Assist’ service which will make certain you are well looked after, on arrival and departure. Should you need to take medication in your hand luggage, it’s worth having a doctor’s letter explaining what this is and what it is for so there

is no misunderstanding in a foreign country. It is also worth packing spare medication in your suitcase for the hold, so you have extra in case of an emergency. And remember not to exceed the maximum of 100ml for any liquids otherwise they will be confiscated as you pass through security, which would not be a good start to your journey. And our absolute top tip, is to leave yourself plenty of time to clear security and the find the departure gate. Having an extra 20 minutes for a cup of tea is so much better than getting stressed whilst you rush through the terminal.

HOLIDAYS...

WITH A DIFFERENCE

WHEN our children are younger, family holidays fall into very distinct categories – usually at some seaside venue or busy resort with enough to keep young minds and bodies occupied.

As we grow older, though, and our children become independent adults, possibly with families of their own – or as we simply opt to be a little more experimental in our choice of destinations – we start to look further afield at more adventurous and unusual holiday choices.

Exotic India For an exotic adventure, why not consider India by rail? Packed with beautiful landscapes, diverse architecture and amazing people – India truly offers something for everyone. The “Palace on Wheels” starts and ends its journey in Delhi and takes in Jaipur, Rathambore National Park, Udaipur ad Jodhpur, allowing passengers to experience the sights of India in a relaxed atmosphere. Or, you can climb aboard the Trans Siberian Express, the Eastern and Oriental Express, the Rocky Mountaineer or, closer to home, enjoy a short journey on the luxurious Venice Simplon Orient Express. If the train is not for you, though, and you would rather spend time on the high seas, there are several cruise lines that offer an all-inclusive luxury experience. And if you want to go somewhere different than the Mediterranean on your cruise, experience the splendour of Alaska or the South Pacific.

10 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

If you’re wanting to escape the often dreary UK Winter, where better to head than “Down Under” and experience the vibrant cities, beautiful beaches and awesome mountain vistas of Australia and New Zealand? Accommodation ranges from good-value motels and campgrounds to luxurious fivestar hotels or lodges.

The Orient or USA? Experience the Orient in Singapore, Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur, kick back on a South Pacific island or visit San Francisco or LA. All these are possible these days and great destinations, with a great range of first-class airlines available. Looking for somewhere quite different? Many people favour the Green Season (May/June and November) when the seasons are changing. The land is verdant and the National Parks are quieter, giving you the opportunity to experience the forests, beaches and volcanoes without the crowds.

Far, Far Away? The Far East has also become a greater attraction to Western travellers with amazing tours available. Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are popular for temples, beaches and the inspiring stories of human resilience. Experience the splendour of Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, the World Heritage site of Luang Prabang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. Vietnam has some gorgeous beaches, too. Winters can be cold in Hanoi but further south the climate is kind throughout the year, although tropical downpours are common. The most popular time to visit is between November and April, with the heaviest rains between June and September. For a completely different culture, how about a private tour of China? Travel from Beijing and visit the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall before heading to Datong, Taiyan to marvel at the sandstone statues in the Yungang Caves. At Pingyao visit the walled Ming and Qing dynasty town before heading on to the Shaloin Temple and Xian to see the famous

TRAVEL Terracotta Warriors. Spring and Autumn are generally the favourites times for tours of China, avoiding the harsh Winter and searing Summer heat experienced in some of its regions.

Archaelogical Adventures Closer To Home It is said that travel broadens the mind, and especially when we explore the history and archaeology of the places we visit. The past, like a foreign country, is full of difference and interest. It underlies the character and identity of every destination, and yet it is also the wider story of humankind, and so holds familiarity and relevance for us all. This is why archaeological travel is so fascinating. It unites culture with adventure and adds value and meaning to our travels.

ARCHAEOLOGY & TRAVEL Perfect Combinations of Leisure and Interest • Minoan Crete & Santorini • Cyprus: North & South • Pompeii & Campania • Malta's Millennia • Ancient Greece

Hidden History Travel provide the opportunity for a richer travelling experience where history comes to life. The world’s historic and ancient sites are a ‘wonderbox’ of interesting things, and a veritable ark of profound insights, unsolved mysteries and great discoveries. They are often in beautiful locations too, and visiting them can get us off the beaten track to see more of the country. A useful starting point and source of inspiration are the country profiles by Hidden History Travel who describe the archaeological and historical interest of various travel destinations.

Ancient Greece Ancient Greece, for example, may seem like a distant, unfamiliar place but a tour of the ancient sites can be a profoundly satisfying experience. It’s not just the warm weather and good food; it’s an intellectual and emotional connection, a return to the cradle of our modern European world. A Greek temple, with marble columns rising into a clear blue sky, is an abiding symbol of western civilisation, and it is more than just the architecture that feels familiar; it’s the thoughts and actions of its creators, the people whose philosophy, science, art and politics laid the foundations of European culture. Well-conducted tours, offered by Hidden History Travel bring out these wider contexts for us all. It isn’t necessary to be a history buff; holidays are available which bring it all together for you, so you don’t have to do all the planning and research yourself. The best tours have a balance of leisure and interest, and knowledgeable guides who bring the sites to life. As someone once said; “a tour without a guide is like a movie without a soundtrack”. Everywhere has a story to tell, and the breadth of interest is endless; from simple everyday life to cultural beliefs, and the rise and fall of great civilisations.

Prehistoric Malta On the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta, there are Stone Age temples that predate the pyramids and which were expressions of prehistoric beliefs similar to those held by the builders of England’s famous Stonehenge. Whatever strange rituals were practised at such places, they still fascinate us today as reminders of the bigger picture; the human journey and our continuing attempts to understand life, death and the cosmos. Recent archaeological research has made fascinating inroads into our understanding of the prehistoric world of our ancestors.

The Real Atlantis The physical remains of the past create landscapes of memory that still resonate in our modern minds. Everyone has heard of the myth of Atlantis but how many people have actually visited the most likely site of the original city? Many scholars agree that the Aegean island of Santorini is the very place. This volcanic island erupted around 3500 years ago with devastating effects on the Bronze Age civilisation of the region, including the palaces of Minoan Crete. It is simply amazing to stand today on the rim of that volcanic crater and realise the scale of the event, and marvel at the antiquity of the island’s ancient city, incredibly preserved in ash like a prehistoric Pompeii. Then sail across to Knossos on Crete, home of King Minos and the Minotaur, to discover Europe’s earliest civilisation. Turn your next holiday into a worthwhile experience, and part of your personal journey through life. Take a tour with a specialist company like Hidden History Travel. Their expertise creates wonderful holidays that are surprisingly affordable. They have the right balance of leisure and interest, and the interest never ends when the tour ends.

TRAVEL as an alternative, you could be sleeping in a stunning treehouse, a few yards away from the main property. Whatever you pick, tents, mobile homes, wooden lodges or apartments, you can have as many properties as the family needs or if you like, all share together!

Holidays - with how many members of the family? By Jennie Carr of Silver Travel Advisor Multi-generational holidays are becoming seriously popular: think grandparents, adult children and grandchildren all travelling together. And indeed, following the example of The Queen and Prince Philip, with their several greatgrandchildren, you might even holiday with four generations, although most of us don’t have Sandringham to accommodate everyone! No matter, here are some suggestions for you to take a look at if you’d like to go away with your wider family. Cruises Ships these days are absolutely bursting with activities: ice rinks, cinemas, discos, climbing walls, cookery demonstrations, choirs, running tracks and enough restaurants for every discerning foodie or faddy infant. And that’s before you’ve stepped on shore for the fascinating excursions. We’ve heard of family groups of sixteen people or more taking a Caribbean voyage, with Granny and Grandpa comfortably settled on deck, whilst parents take a bridge class or enjoy a spa session as teenagers sleep in and the little ones have fun at a kids’ club. Then they’d all meet up for lunch or dinner, sharing tales of their day, however it was spent. A cruise can offer a superb range of things to do whatever your age: no complaints and no boredom! Villas Renting a place in the sun, with a pool, offers endless opportunities for

14 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

spending quality time together. And many larger properties have an annexe or separate floor, which is ideal for teens or grandparents who’d like a bit of privacy. We all love our families, however getting an hour or two of peace and quiet can be vital, especially at siesta time. Villa companies often provide lovely add-ons: a cook, who will shop as well (what bliss!), motorboats if you’re near the sea and even a nanny or babysitter for adult-only moments. With a villa, all options are covered: exploring the local area on foot or by car, relaxing by the pool, leisurely sundowners, and trips to the beach in many cases. This is communal living of the easiest kind. Self-catering We have a long tradition of holidaying in rental properties around the UK and in Europe: you and your family can enjoy the freedom this brings. Mealtimes when you fancy, movies all day if you like and interesting attractions close by to keep everyone busy. Modern campsites and holiday parks provide entertainment and sports all day long, with evening entertainment too. Some have golf courses, spas and fishing lakes as well. Standards have dramatically improved since the days of Hi-de-Hi. Comfortable beds, well-equipped kitchens and barbeques often come as standard. And cabins in woodland are rather luxurious

Skiing Now, this has to be for more active families, who love the mountains. And it’s true that skiing, once over a certain age, can be tiring, however, with proper preparation and fitness you can enjoy some great times with all ages. And for non-skiers, many resorts are charming places to spend a few days, with iceskating, snow-shoeing and sledging as winter alternatives. A hot chocolate taken outside in sunny, cold, crisp air, surrounded by mountains is a great joy everyone delights in. And cosy evenings, sleepy by the fire, are hugely relaxing. When it snows, the child in each of us surfaces, for snowball fights and snowman building – perfect bonding moments in a winter wonderland! Sssh….Father Christmas Time and again, people tell us that one of their best holidays ever has been taking their grandchildren to meet Father Christmas in Lapland. Smiles of delight and disbelief light up their faces as they talk to the living legend in the far north. Naughty elves making toys and reindeer outside bring the traditions of Christmas to life in a unique way. A night or two in comfortable hotels in the forest combined with the remarkable ‘Santa’ experience will be remembered forever. Mini Guide If you’re out and about having day trips in Great Britain you might enjoy our mini guide especially for grandparents, filled with suggestions of where to take your little darlings for a treat. From castles to lochs, the National Football Museum to Bekonscot Model Village and Railway or the Harry Potter Studio Tour, there is a wealth of attractions for every member of the family. TRY to describe the ideal holiday and it’s a fair bet it would start right at your front door and simply whisk you away for a fantastic experience. Well, at Ellen Smith Coach Tours, that’s exactly what we do. We’re proud of our efficient door-to-door service that picks you up at your home address at a pre-arranged time in a taxi or small minibus. We take you straight to one of our two meeting points: Birch Services near Heywood or Poplar Services near Lymm, where there’s no hanging around as you’re usually on your way within 15 to 20 minutes. This is just the start of a memorable holiday or break that’s packed with attention to detail – because we know from experience what works for people, and we want to give them the best. Our business was started in 1900 in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, so we’ve got a long and distinguished history of providing top-quality, value for money coach holidays. In fact, as managing director Paul Targett says: “We get it right – that’s certainly what our customers tell us, and they choose to come back again and again.” Ellen Smith Coach Tours wants clients to completely enjoy the experience of their chosen holiday or break – whether it’s to the picturesque Highlands of Scotland or the rugged beauty of Cornwall. We choose the best hotels and inject genuine creative thought into putting together interesting and enjoyable itineraries Your driver will always be very experienced, pleasant and helpful. “Many of our drivers know our regular clients by their first names, which all adds to the family atmosphere,” states Mr Targett.

No need, either, to worry about carrying heavy cases as the vast majority of our hotels offer a porterage service. On your return date, the reverse of your original journey is all in place. Your taxi is waiting for you at one of the two service stations and you’re usually back through your own front door with a cuppa and feet up to watch “The Chase”! Our whole holiday experience is worry-free. All our holidays are fully bonded by the Confederation of Passenger Transport Bonding Scheme – a Government-approved consumer protection scheme ensuring your money is protected. We also offer popular “Mature Singles” holidays where all the hotel bedrooms are sole occupancy, offering a brilliant break for the solo traveller. We also run some excellent Continental coach holidays to wonderful destinations like Lake Como, Lake Garda, Alpine trips and Normandy for the D-Day landing beaches. And, for that touch of extra luxury, we offer Fred Olsen cruises from Liverpool at unbelievable prices, plus a variety of Air, Cruise & Worldwide holidays.

In fact, Ellen Smith Coach Tours is simply all about the best of holidays – brought to your door.

Our coaches are executive standard with toilets, air conditioning and reclining seats. On the journey to your hotel, we tend to avoid motorway services and visit some of the glorious villages, towns and cities dotted around our lovely country. We always plan to arrive at our destination around 4.30 – in time to give you plenty of opportunity for a quick snooze and to settle in your room before dinner. As we normally only use 3 and 4 star hotels, with the occasional family-run 2 star hotel that we’ve used for many years, you’re in for a comfortable and relaxing stay with the very best in catering. We also use a range of hotels to suit specific tours. Many of our tours are themed, like “Royal Sandringham and the Sport of Kings” or “An Irish Country House Experience”. All our tours have day excursions at no extra charge, including canal or train journeys or visits to historic castles or country estates. “We try to showcase the best of what our country has to offer,” added Mr Targett.

TRAVEL

Stopping off on a destination is part of the touring holiday

Caravanning isn't a cheap basic pastime as it once was, owning a tourer or holiday home in 2017 offers luxury living and has become a popular lifestyle on most occasions holidaying abroad for many years.

Back in the 60's and 70's caravanning was a simple way to holiday and only in the summer months too! Look at a tourer Many of us may have memories of holidays past and if you were a child in the 50's and 60's chances are you went on a caravan holiday. It may have been a "Static" on a site or a touring caravan. Back then of course caravans were just a few hundred pounds to buy but very basic in equipment as were most sites. I often meet new caravanners who are in their 50's trying it for the first time after

18 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Those who have taken early retirement are often attracted to this pastime, and it's a surprise to many when they go looking at holiday homes and tourers just what have changed in creature comforts and specifications. With more sites being open for longer the usage of both these types of caravan has extended and so the owner gets more value than ever. Looking at tourers first, even basic models come with blown air heating, Grade 3 insulation, hot water, oven, shower, TV aerial, towing stabiliser, fridge and microwave. Prices start around ÂŁ14,000 new and as you want more luxury and even more specification the prices rise to ÂŁ30,000 plus.

Tourer dealerships offer top advice on all aspects of caravanning A dealership will give you the correct information on what your car can tow and also have information on storage and towing courses. Also on what

tourer layout to choose from, there are plenty and many are now what we call fixed bed layouts. Also larger tourers are mainly twin axle models and these tourers can be left as a seasonal pitch. So basically you use it as a static caravan but then take it off to another site to do a few weeks touring. The modern tourer is also designed to be as comfortable as possible and as mentioned before this enables them to be used all year round. It's now common for caravan users to go away over the Christmas and New Year period. With some sites organising social events for this time of year, many caravanners also make new friends at these events. With towing, tourers now have built in hitch stabilisers which help to keep the caravan stable on tow. Other devices are electronic and apply the caravan's breaks should it feel the caravan is going to get in an unstable position. A well matched car and tourer though is easy to handle and also though tourers need to be reversed onto a pitch which can be daunting, there is a device to help out with this. Named a mover these are attached to the caravan's wheel with a 12-volt motor. Using a remote control unit this makes putting the van on to a pitch a very easy task. Most new caravanners also begin to discover the UK and go places where they have never thought of going before. Joining the two Caravan Clubs makes site choosing in a chosen area so simple. With the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravanning Club they have their own sites which are kept to very high standards and are usually in areas of attractions. They offer top quality toilet blocks and other facilities. Dog walks are

a gas bottle service but more sites are now having the gas plumbed direct and all services are usually metered. Site fees can cost from ÂŁ2,500 upwards. A holiday home allows you to be able to just pop a few things in the car and off you go. Once you have the van sorted with all your essentials you treat it as a second home.

The holiday home is worlds apart from those of 30 plus years ago popular with many caravanners who take the family pooch with them and these sites and most commercial run sites offer this facility. With the big attraction of being able to spend weekends away as and when you want, the idea of a tourer is attractive to many. Ideal for retired folk the touring caravan is well worth looking at as a way to spend some quality time away and discover what the UK has to offer.

from home and also in a place where you like. Some sites have waiting lists depending on the area. Most holiday homes will have their own parking bay and also decking and small garden areas. Mains sewerage and all services will be plumbed in. Some sites still have

The holiday home offers a home like feel with larger units of 38ft up especially being the case. These types offer two bedrooms and central heating and double glazing plus usually two bathrooms. The home can be used for family visits and also some sites will allow sub-letting. Holiday home users also like the fact that they also get to know new friends and that sites are generally safe places to for children. Sites vary in facilities depending on your requirements from clubhouses to bowling alleys! So looking for a new pastime and one that's a real investment in leisure? Take a look at a tourer or holiday home and become one of the growing number who find this a superb way of spending your time whether your're just retired or still doing the 9 to 5 job! .

Holiday Home - your weekend retreat The old static caravan was a basic unit. Gas lights and limited insulation and heating meant that April to September was the main usage of the static. Many have experiences of sites in rows and shanty type caravans that were often let. Those days have long gone; the static is now a holiday home and can be purchased from as little as ÂŁ17,100 for a basic holiday home. These come with heating and showers and loos and have a contemporary feel. Of course the more you pay the more spec and extras you get such as piped music and dishwashers and washing machines. Buying one of these units means finding a site where it's easy to get to

LEGAL

Make New Year a New Start for Planning Your Future New Year is often a time when you reflect on the past 12 months and make decisions about the coming year - what you’re going to do with your life, where you’ll go and what arrangements you’ll make. We can’t help with what you might do or where you might go, but we may be able to assist with what arrangements you’ll make. To help you start 2017 as you mean to go on we’re offering an exclusive package to clients wanting to get their house in order. by Judith Bromley Russell & Russell

Throughout January and February we’re offering clients the opportunity to write their will, draw up a Lasting Power of Attorney and prepare a severance for £550 + vat. This would normally cost £760 + vat, so it’s a very healthy saving of £210. Many people don’t like to think about making a will because it reminds them of their own mortality but you never know what’s around the corner; you may live to be 100, but sometimes people’s lives are cut tragically short. That’s why it’s important to make arrangements now so

20 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

that, should the worst happen, you know your estate will go to the people you want to have it, rather than who the law states should get it. Russell and Russell is accredited to the Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme (WIQS), the Law Society’s standard for delivering tailored wills and probate advice. Being WIQS certified means that we can help clients by ensuring they understand the issues in preparing a will or seeking probate advice, and that they’re aware of the options, costs and timescales involved in estate planning. There are lots of unregulated, uninsured and untrained advisers out there because there’s no law surrounding will drafting so anyone can hold themselves out as an expert. If you choose to use an unregulated will writer you risk leaving your loved ones in a legal minefield. That’s why it’s always better to use a qualified solicitor as they’re bound by the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s code of conduct and are legally obliged to maintain high levels of service. As well as being regulated, solicitors are required to have insurance to protect the public and can provide guidance on more complex financial issues, such as inheritance tax and trusts planning.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that gives someone else the right to act for you and make decisions on your behalf should you lose capacity to do it yourself. With dementia now the leading cause of death in England and Wales, many people are setting up LPAs to avoid the prospect of strangers making decisions about their way of life if their mental capacity starts to fail. While no one likes to think they will develop a degenerative mental illness like dementia, 225,000 people are diagnosed with the condition each year. That’s about one person every three minutes. And although age is the biggest contributing factor, one in 20 of the people living with dementia are under the age of 65. Women are more likely to develop it than men. Of the 850,000 people living with dementia, 500,000 of them are female. In fact, according to studies carried out by Alzheimer’s Research UK, women over 60 are twice as likely to develop the condition as they are of getting breast cancer and after the age of 65, the risk doubles every five years. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney. The first focuses on your financial affairs, while the other deals with your personal welfare. A property and affairs LPA addresses the material things in your life; paying bills, collecting your income and benefits, conducting your financial affairs or even selling your house. Your attorney for a property and affairs LPA isn’t allowed to have been declared bankrupt. A health and welfare LPA allows your attorney to make decisions about your well-being. For example, your day-today care including medication, your diet and how you live. You can even give your attorney the power to accept or refuse life-sustaining treatment on your behalf. A key thing to remember when taking out an LPA is that you can only set it up when you’re well. The law doesn’t recognise it as a legal document if you do it when you’ve lost capacity. A severance enables you to leave your share of a property to someone other than the person you own the property with. This is often popular with people who are joint tenants who are unmarried or in a second marriage. If you want to talk to someone about taking up this package, we offer a free, no obligation consultation to help you understand the legal requirements of administering your estate. You can make an appointment to see us any one of our branches or, if it’s easier, we’ll come you at a time that’s convenient for you. russellrussell.co.uk

Sir

Rod Stewart

THAT rich raspy voice, the little red rooster haircut and the cheeky grin – you immediately know it’s Rod Stewart. The enduringly popular singer at 71 is still pulling in the crowds, the hits and the accolades.

In fact, he’s just been knighted! 22 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW Sir Rod is also on the verge of a major sell-out national tour that starts and finishes at the Liverpool Echo Arena and takes in major venues from Belfast to Birmingham, including London’s O2 Arena. And if you thought that decades of touring had made him jaded, you’d be wrong. “What a great line-up of venues!” he stated. “These are some of my favourite buildings in my favourite cities. “I give you fair warning – fasten your seat belts. I’ma pulling out all the stops!” It’s fair to say, though, that the singer’s career has always involved pulling out all the stops. He was born in Highgate, London, the youngest of five children of a Scottish father. Young Rod had a happy childhood; there was a household interest in football and it spawned a love of the game, and a love of Scottish football specifically, that has been a hallmark of Rod’s life.

The following year was pivotal in his career. The Faces released their second album, Long Player, which did better than the first, and Rod released his third solo album, Every Picture Tells A Story, which made him a household name. The track Reason to Believe was taken from the album and became a minor hit in both counties but when DJs started playing the B side, Maggie May, the fun really started. It became No.1 in both the UK and the US. By the time Rod released his fourth solo album, it looked like his time with the Faces was coming to a close and he later moved to America. In the intervening years since those early heady years, his music has evolved much like the man himself and his hits are equally legends.

As fate would have it, along came the Small Faces and at the same time, Rod signed a solo record contract. The Faces, as they became, built a solid fan base in the UK and America, releasing an album in 1970. In the meantime, Rod released his second solo album, Gasoline Alley, and supported it with an American tour.

His love life has been almost as famous as his music, and certainly as flamboyant as his appearance. He has been married three times, previously to Alana Stewart and Rachel Hunter, and is currently married to Penny Lancaster. He has eight children.

“I think it’s absolutely marvellous being famous. I love it. I like walking down the street and being recognised. I don’t go out of my way to be recognised.”

Fortunately, music was another love in his life and he was influenced by top soul singers then like Otis Redding and Sam Cook. This was the early ‘60s and pop music was sweeping the nation. Rod joined Birmingham-based rhythm and blues group Jimmy Powell and the Five Dimensions and toured the UK.

Early in 1966, the group disbanded and Rod joined Shotgun Express, before becoming a member of better known the Jeff Back Group. This heralded a rise to stardom and where he honed his style as a dynamic, sexy lead singer. Hit records followed but, sadly, the group began to fall apart.

Rod recognises that people have certain sartorial expectations of him. As he commented: “I don’t think people expect Bruce Springsteen to come out in a pink satin jacket but Rod Stewart they do. And I like doing it, I don’t wear it just because I think I have to. I’m a very flamboyant person.”

He has never shrunk from publicity, but never particularly courted it, either. His philosophy on this is simple: “I don’t know anybody that doesn’t like being famous in the first place.

He was talented in the sport, too, and had trials at Brentford FC, in the Third Division at the time, but he was never signed.

Back in London again, he then joined Long John Baldry’s band, the Hoochie Coochie Men, which later became Steampacket and toured as support for The Rolling Stones and the Walker Brothers.

Mod clothes to the tight tartan trousers and often eye-popping fashions that helped establish his sense of style.

That Scottish heritage also makes him canny about cash. “I don’t mind buying one round of drinks,” he stated, “but I am b****y well not going to buy another.

“I’m a very flamboyant person.” The days of raw rock like Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? gave way to a smoother, very different repertoire and in the early 2000s he released a series of successful albums interpreting the Great American Songbook. In spite of changes in musical fashion, Rod has always had his fans and been a major star, probably because he has been able to adapt. And it’s worked - he’s sold more than 200 million records worldwide and is viewed as being able to sing virtually any type of song. He has always been a snazzy and contemporary dresser, from his early trademark upright hairdo - kept in place by hairspray and determination - and his

“I don’t miss a penny. I get a daily statement about where every penny is going and every investment. I wouldn’t say I worry about money, but you never know what’s around the corner. “I worry more about my children’s views on money sometimes. They’ve grown up privileged and it’s an ongoing battle they know the price of everything and the value of nothing.” His great, deserved success might have meant a lessening of his enthusiasm for getting onstage. But, as the tickets leap from the box-office for this latest tour, From Gasoline Alley to Another Country – the title of his latest album - Rod is as enthusiastic as ever about performing for the fans, who can expect plenty of his chart-toppers. Generously, though, while he is always honest about his talent, he insists that he is not the main man. “Elvis was the king,” he stated. “No doubt about it. People like myself, Mick Jagger and all the others only followed in his footsteps.”

purposes rather than cooking as many of you may have experienced. The 50’s left not just its food to be admired but also the growing willingness for the Brit to travel abroad. Of course, the Great British Seaside holiday was still ever popular. The package holiday began to creep in; by 1961, the first charter airlines began flying from Manchester. Under the brand, Euravia that some may remember. Costa Brava was the population destination of the period.

The Times They Are a-Changin’ A Brief Look At Life Throughout The 1950’s and 60’s As good a place as any to start when re-introducing oneself to the decade of the 1950’s, and in turn remember that today, some things are very much the same… The Coronation of Elizabeth II in June 1953. And along with this historic day, the birth of an ever popular British dish within the family household throughout the 50’s and 60’s, Coronation Chicken. Yes, I will discuss the conception of yet another ‘Coronation’ later, albeit one regarding a cobbled street.

A wartime classic-Spam

As some of you may remember, war rationing only ended in 1954. Before that no doubt, you will remember eating a timeless wartime classic, Spam fritters. There was nothing better to get you into that wartime spirit. Once again, I find myself thinking not everything changes as you can now get ready-made Spam fritters straight out the fridge.

The crisps with the little packet of salt

If the fritters did not quite cut it, and you were in the mood for a salty snack, well that was just it; all you were left with was Ready Salted flavour. The conundrum was not “There’s no cheese and onion left” as many a child moans upon delving into a multi pack today. Indeed, Cheese and Onion crisps only became established in 1962. The real conundrum was whether to add more flavour with more salt. Unsurprisingly, we have come full circle in this aspect as well. Think, the classic brand, Salt ‘n’ Shake that have found their way back onto our supermarket shelves. However, uses for some items did change. It was only a few weeks ago my Grandad instructed me to rub olive oil inside my ear to loosen earwax and in turn relieve me of my earache. That was the truth of it. Throughout the 50’s olive oil was used more for medicinal

Moving into the 1960’s, I suppose they could easily be characterized by television, technology and music. Indeed, 1960 was the year Coronation Street first graced our television screens. Told you I would mention it. And the years when BBC2 seemingly had more impetus than BBC1. As the former, those of you lucky enough to have had a colour television will remember, was the first to broadcast in colour. Starting with Wimbledon in 1967. This was also when the ‘lounge’ found its way into our vocabulary. Fittingly to accommodate the room where the television took pride of place. I am glad to say fashion, quite rightly, has changed rather substantially since the 1960’s. I myself like to dub the 60’s rather stereotypically as the years of the flower. Flower wallpaper was a big hit in the home. In fact, it was such a hit many fashion designers copied the wallpaper design straight onto women’s dresses. Therefore, I ask, how many of you have worn a wallpaper dress or two in your time.

A selection of Indian takeaway

Before going a little closer to home, I would like to remind you all of a time when a takeaway was nothing more

than a math problem. This was before the 60’s. As it was around this time, the Chinese and Indian takeaway began to spring up in towns more prominently. Now the takeaway culture, I am sure you will agree is more diverse and popular than ever. With such dishes of exotic spice lager became less of a ‘ladies’ drink and developed into the brands we so easily recognize today. Carlsberg coming in 1968.

Famous in Bury, the Black Pudding

Bolton and Bury have provided us with many moments of history throughout the 1950’s and 60’s much of which can still be seen today. For one, I think we can all agree that Bury is the black pudding capital of the world. Many of you may remember Casewell’s on Union Street. Which until its closure in 1968, was an ordinary terrace were traditional black puddings could be purchased. Indeed, the World Black Pudding Throwing Championship is held in Ramsbottom on a yearly basis.

lavish productions. Instead, it was known for storing barrels for the local brewery. The Theatre eventually re-opened in 1965, although barely, as the funds ran out. In the end 20 volunteers, offered to paint the foyer so the restoration could be completed. A triumph for the local community to get behind a local cause. Now both towns have a rich history of festivals, I challenge anyone to Sir Anthony Hopkins remember the year Bolton held its first Beethoven festival. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic came to town and Sir Anthony Hopkins then just plain old ‘Anthony’ delivered two lectures on the subject. Perhaps some of you had the pleasure of attending the occasion, the year 1963. Long may you continue experiencing the vast amount of culture and experiences Bolton and Bury has to offer. Written by Tyler Grundy.

In 1961, some of you may remember the tragedy that struck The Top Storey Club, a private members club, on Crown Street in Bolton. Tragically, 19 people lost their lives due to a fire. However, their loss was not in vein as the tragedy later that year led to inspection powers being extended in regards to fire regulations in clubs. On a lighter note, no doubt many of you have passed through the Bolton Octagon Theatre doors at some point or another. The theatre had the historic notion, of being the first live theatre to be built in the North West since the conclusion of the war. I wonder if any of you remember one of the first plays to grace this beloved theatre. It was an adaptation of a popular BBC radio feature. The play was ‘Wigan to Rome’ by Bill Naughton who found his plays being performed at the Octagon numerous times over the years. And I wonder if anyone can vouch for the validity of such a review as this on the actors who were mainly Southern:-

‘Modelled their Idea of Lancashire on Coronation Street and produced what is likely to strike locals as patronizing’ The Theatre Royal in Bury, St. Edmunds has a history far more vast. However, 30 years of that history was not for

HOME Shop around for smaller items of furniture like bedside tables. “You can pick up cheaper copies in high street stores,” she says. The same applies to cut-glass drawer and door handles. “Often, just changing the handles on furniture or buying new window poles can update the room. “Clearance light fittings can be painted or sprayed, and you can add diamantes or beads on lampshades. Also, if you have throws on furniture already, invest in some really smart cushion covers and trim the existing throws with the same material.” While it’s always possible to get bargains on the internet, Allyson advises that it’s always best “to see and feel” soft furnishing items in particular. “Colours and textures aren’t always right when items arrive in the post,” she concludes. “Shop local – you can see everything yourself and still get plenty of bargains.” Sam Ablard from Brand Interiors knows the wisdom of this advice. The company has 10 stores across the North-west of England selling furniture from famous high street names at discounted prices.

How to give your home that contemporary look WHENEVER we see those posh glossy magazines showing upmarket homes and interiors or watch TV programmes featuring fabulous houses most of us wonder “how can I give my home that contemporary look?” Actually adapting the latest home interior ideas when you’re working on a realistic budget is not as impossible as it might first appear. And it’s completely possible to create a new look for your home to bring it completely up to date.

means it will have fewer joins and look better overall. “The average wallpaper lasts around four years in most homes before you want to replace it but really good wallpaper is still there in 10 years time, and you will probably still like the way it looks.”

This market also allows them to monitor the latest trends and styles, and Sam reports that the key trend developing this season is an uplift in retro styles. “These are from periods like the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘70s,” she states. “Choosing a statement piece from one of these eras can totally change the look of a room.” If you are updating your home interior, Sam suggests one clever way –

As interior designer Allyson Houghton of Ideas Interior explains: “There are always alternative ways and tricks to get the style you want.” Unusually, though, sometimes buying bespoke rather than opting for readymade chain-store items can work out cheaper. “For example, if you want gorgeous pelmets and drapes for your home, you may well be better off getting them made than buying them off the shelf,” adds Allyson. “They will fit better and last much longer, and you will be getting exactly the design you want.” The same principle applies to wallpaper. “You don’t need to invest a fortune to get wallpaper for a feature wall,” she says. “But good wallpaper often comes in wider sizes than the average roll which

“Add an oversized mirror – it creates a statement and enhances the light in your room.” And she points to one range, Gallery Direct’s, fresh and exciting new range of accent mirrors “that will transform any room into a 1920s dance hall.” Other bang on trend ideas that can be replicated at home include turning alcoves in your lounge or living room into stylish additions. While made-to-measure bookcases installed either side of a fireplace in a traditional lounge will really enhance it, you could instead group pictures on shelves for an elegant display. Tuck away the TV, music system and other media in an alcove to add to available space and integrate them with modern cube units or fitted cabinets. And if you have an alcove space in your home-office, they’re a great place for built-in cupboards for your files and stationery. Kitchens are often the heart of the home so if you’re looking to update yours consider making it into a kitchen-diner. Providing the space to cook, eat and entertain together as a family or with friends makes for a more relaxing atmosphere. In some homes, taking

Cover an existing headboard in fabric to match curtains to update the room. out a downstairs wall frees up much-needed kitchen space to provide open-plan layouts and a place to socialise all year round. Go for a more streamlined look in the kitchen with handleless kitchen units and stainless steel worktops. Add clever lighting for a touch of drama and colourful chairs to soften a contemporary colours-scheme. Consider deep blues, white and grey in the kitchen and add low-hung pendant lighting over a central island. Bathrooms can be updated and improved with more efficient use of space. In a small bathroom, use neutral colours that run along the floor, up the walls and even continue onto the bath and toilet to give a feeling of never-ending space. Add depth to a narrow bathroom by creating a feature wall with one block colour or exposed brick. Dark colours can work well in a bathroom and can add an elegant and opulent touch. Consider adding a skylight to open up your bathroom and create a light and airy space. White furnishings may help to bounce light around this room, allowing you to inject more personality with the addition of interesting accessories. Lighting is particularly important here, too, especially next to mirrors. For a retro look in your bathroom, try hanging clever storage areas on walls and add pale pastel hues to bring the bathroom to life. If you prefer a hotel-style bathroom, try a black and white colour-scheme inter-mingled with soft grey for a fresh and modern style. Remember, too, that wet rooms are currently very popular and if you’ve got the space they can be a boon to easier living. The latest looks in bedrooms include large patterns on the walls, even if you have a small bedroom. Invest in good bed linen in the sales to make your bed look extra-special, and look out for headboards which can really tie a bedroom together. The probiotics then absorb large amounts of humidity and develop into very active organisms; they multiply X 100 in 24 hours and magically clean up your bed textiles! In the sleep environment, House Dust Mite Allergy (HDMA) is a growing reason for concern. Allergic symptoms are triggered each time people inhale the allergen while resting or sleeping. Sensitivity to the house dust mite allergen has a negative impact on the quality of sleep. 66% of all mites are found in bed, where people spend on average 52.5 hours per week (source Allergy UK) and they are fully exposed to the allergens of the house dust mite. 60% to 80% of all asthma sufferers are hypersensitive to dust mites. HDMA complaints peak in autumn as people spend more time inside, as it gets darker and the weather gets more humid. Every mattress that has been used for 6 months contains mites. A test on a used mattress showed that Purotex had cleaned up 89.3% of house dust mite allergen after only 2 weeks, a remarkable result! Purotex reduces humidity, cleans up allergens and creates a clean and healthy sleeping environment. Purr-O-Lux is proud of their commitment to tradition and craftsmanship when it comes to the manufacture of all of their mattresses. With their new self-cleaning range, developed using cutting edge Purotex textiles, Purr-O-Lux have created a mattress that offers incredible comfort and durability and, if cared for properly, can last for 30 years or more. Purr-O-Lux believe that adverts and publicity suggesting you change your mattress every 8 years simply isn’t true. Purr-O-Lux are 100% confident that their entire range of mattresses, if cared for properly, will last a lot, lot longer.

With an array of styles to choose from including engineered wood floors and solid hardwood floors you’re sure to be able to find something to suit your needs – so here are eight reasons why you should make the change. 1. Hardwood floors look fantastic Hardwood floors have a classy, elegant and sophisticated appearance that can totally revive and revamp any room. Whether you opt for natural earthy shades of brown or prefer more neutral whites and greys, you can achieve the interior design of your dreams. 2. They can increase the value of your home Believe it or not, many appraisers take hardwood floors into account when valuing your property potentially adding value to the selling price. For this reason, hardwood flooring is often seen as a worthwhile investment, particularly if you want to relocate at some point down the line.

dust mites and other allergens – unlike carpets which are not recommended for people with eczema, asthma and other skin and respiratory ailments. 7. Durable and easy to maintain While there are many styles of hardwood flooring available, they all have one thing in common: durability. Designed to stand the test of time, hardwood will be able to cope with the traffic of your house and is also easy to maintain.

3. They can make your property easier to sell There are many things you can do to help your property sell such as increasing curb appeal but in terms of internal improvements, laying wooden floors will give your abode that sharp, fresh, buyme-now appearance it desperately needs for a quick sale.

4. They naturally complement existing décor The great thing about hardwood floors is that you won’t have to change the colour of your suite or soft furnishing as the hues and shades available tend to work perfectly with existing décor. 5. They’re easy to clean Hardwood floors are easy to clean. They can be swept, mopped, hoovered, polished and don’t hold onto dirt and dust like carpets do. 6. They’re great for allergy sufferers The fact hardwood floors can be kept so sparkling is great news for allergy sufferers as they provide a hostile environment for

If your carpet or rug is looking a bit shabby, or you simply fancy a change, hardwood could be the right option for you. Flooring of this kind has many benefits as you can see above, but it’s also relatively inexpensive to buy and, as you can order what you need based on careful measurements, there shouldn’t be any waste.

The only fencing you need... Are you fed up with painting your fence year in year out with expensive treatments? Well now you do not have to, as this amazing Colourfence is maintenance free and never needs painting. Steve Beaumont is running the only firm which offers Colourfence in the Bury and Bolton area. This is great news for homeowners who have become tired of the costly, timeconsuming and never-ending upkeep involved in timber fencing. Colourfence is the smart choice for long-lasting, low-maintenance fencing which comes with a 25 year guarantee and the builtin strength to withstand harsh climates including wind gusts of up to 130 miles per hour.

Timber fences need annual upkeep and painting, and yet they will age, spoil and need replacing within a matter of years.

Over the past 10 years, Colourfence has altered the way in which gardens can be fenced, and it is now available locally. Just imagine, for the price of a comparable quality timber fence, you could have a fence that’s professionally installed, will stay in place no matter what, and requires no more work than the occasional hose down with water to keep it looking as good as new. Creosote, fence paint, wood stain — all things of the past with Colourfence, so it’s time for the fence brush to be consigned to the dustbin. All surveys and installations are handled by Steve and his team, who promise an honest and friendly evaluation of your fences, and a noobligation, no-strings attached quote. Not only will a Colourfence product provide the perfect backdrop to your garden all year round and perfect privacy from prying neighbours’ eyes, it will also give the peace of mind of having a most secure boundary to your property. With 80 per cent of burglaries taking place after access through garden fences, according to Steve this has to be an added bonus which can’t be ignored.

A good-looking & well maintained fence enhances the appearance of your garden as well as improving security & safety for your family Steve, who has more than 40 years’ business experience, said:“This is great news for the people of Bury, Bolton and the surrounding areas as Colourfence is a premium fencing solution at affordable prices, choosing the product line is a no-brainer. “There’s virtually no maintenance, and it offers so much more strength and durability than timber fences,” he said. “We offer a no-nonsense, all-in price which includes installation by ourselves. “Combined with the cost and guarantees, this means that Colourfence is much better value than timber in the long term.”

Colourfence, on the other hand, is made of a strong Colorbond steel, with a special anti-corrosion layer that won’t scratch or rust, topped with a special coating, primer and a beautiful finish coat in four colours to choose from. Matching railings and gates are also available, which are guaranteed not to rust of flake for 10 years. Colourfence built its business model on ethical trading, and promises that it will never use hard-sell methods. CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL Jack a happy customer from Bolton... “Right from our call to arrange a quote which was dealt with in a friendly and courteous manner, everything was dealt with very efficiently, from the work force arriving on time, working quickly and being extremely tidy. The work was carried out over two days including removal of all waste and tidying. We were very pleased with the result and would recommend Colourfence Bolton to anyone.” For more happy customer reviews see colourfence.co.uk/bolton/testimonials

Total Access Bathrooms LTD Beautiful, Affordable and Accessible Bathroom Solutions with a friendly touch... Total Access Bathrooms Ltd, was formed by its Directors, Nick Waddington and Stephen Rogers, after their extensive knowledge of the Plumbing and Bathroom fitting industry and extensive research into real people's needs and requirements, with the emphasis being on people aged at 50+. It soon became apparent to Nick and Steve that as people grow older, their desire to have a beautiful Bathroom remains the same but their ability to keep it clean in those difficult to reach areas and sometimes a difficulty to actually get in and out of a bath safely, becomes increasingly more challenging. The facts are, that approximately 80% of us during our life, will experience difficulty in one form or another, getting in and out of baths safely for reasons ranging from hip and knee problems, to just wear and tear over the years. With this in mind, whilst still supplying and fitting various Bathroom options for the general public, they addressed the issue and focused their attention on acceptable, affordable bathroom solutions with an emphasis on easy access and usability, whilst still remaining aesthetically attractive to the eye. Nick and Stephen have stated that this is not a totally new idea but what they have found is the large national companies that supply these type of bathrooms, lack the personal touch, don't take into account the customers concerns and are invariably very expensive and in some instances, over twice the cost. The other side of the coin is the independent bathroom fitters can't offer the guarantees and securities for peace of mind should anything go wrong that the larger companies provide. Total Access Bathrooms Ltd, place themselves directly in the middle; they

are a large enough company to cope with any job with their experienced team of fitters, whilst at the same time small enough to cater for the customers personal needs.

BEFORE

They realise that first and foremost, it is a big decision to have a new, full or partial Bathroom fitted and you may have concerns from anything from existing pipework to what could actually fit in your bathroom. This is why Nick and Stephen insist on doing each survey themselves due to their extensive experience in the business. When asked what made their company different from the rest, Stephen replied, With over 35 years in the industry, we have experienced every possible scenario and problem and overcome every one. We are predominantly engineers not sales people and as such feel we can relate to the customer better whilst still offering the security and piece of mind of a larger company. Transforming Smiles As an implant centre of excellence, Douglas Lee Dental Associates recently carried out its 150th ‘Fast and Fixed’ same- day implant procedure, a technique that has transformed the smiles, and the lives, of many patients...

BEFORE

Leading the way in UK implant technology is Lancashire-based Douglas Lee, who was one of the first dentists in the country to adopt the highly successful pioneering ‘Fast and Fixed’ technique. The ‘Fast and Fixed’ implant procedure has made Douglas Lee Dental Associates a flagship practice and teaching surgery for the Germanpioneered technique, Testament to their skills, the team at Douglas Lee Dental were the first in the UK to carry out a full set of upper and lower jaw implants in the same day.

The team were absolutely wonderful, they are so attentive and it’s a very caring practice

After reading about the procedure, sales consultant Jacqueline Shonn called Douglas Lee Dental and arranged for a consultation: “I am 55 but I am not an old 55 and I had to wear dentures on either side of my lower teeth, which I hated with a vengeance! They made me feel old!

we previously had to resort to prosthetics like removable dentures. Dental implants are a wonderful improvement on these.” Jackie had lost a number of her teeth and with several failing teeth still in place, she also needed work on her gums. Sedated, Jackie was then painlessly fitted with her lower implants. During their years of experience, the team at Douglas Lee Dental Associates have refined the ‘Fast and Fixed’ procedure and have state-of-the-art in-house technology at their fingertips. Sedation ensures that no pain is felt and the patient remains relaxed throughout the experience. “To be honest before the procedure I felt quite wary but, it was amazing, I felt no pain or discomfort. I also had four teeth removed and it was still better than going to the dentist for a filling!” says Jackie.

I had been thinking about implants for a while and after talking to Dougie I decided I definitely wanted to go ahead

Preparation is the key to the success and the team of dental nurses, dental technicians, cosmetic dentist Usman Riaz and Dougie himself, all play their part on the day. ‘’No two smiles are the same, so there is no ‘one-size-fits all’ when it comes to this level of cosmetic dentistry, ’’ says Usman. “Carrying out our 150th procedure was quite a milestone for us and like all the

other patients, the implants have completely changed Jackie’s smile,” adds Usman. “Implants can transform people – they gain confidence and restore self-esteem. It may sound a cliché but this procedure really does change their lives.”

CELEBRATING COLOUR IN ACTIVE AGEING Have you ever considered the impact of colour as we age? Helen Venables, Managing Director of House of Colour does; every day with her clients and 100-person team in fact.

COLOUR - THE POWER OF BEING POSITIVE “Colour is key to every part of our lives and we see every day how what you wear can affect how you feel. For example, the right colours make us feel positive and full of vitality whilst the wrong ones drain us and can alter our moods negatively. This becomes increasingly obvious in how we dress as we age and in my view the more we embrace our true colours, the more we can influence how we feel and how others feel about us. “Given that, whether we like it or not, we make decisions about someone and the way they look within seconds of meeting them, we need to consider what message we want to give others - perhaps that we are stylish, fun or professional? Many clients come to us because they are on emotional journeys, perhaps they are having a milestone birthday, have lost their style confidence or something significant has happened in their lives such as divorce or retirement. “Whilst most of us know being active is important to combat heart disease, diabetes, and dementia, how many of us think about the link between positive emotional stimulation and good ageing? Our levels of dopamine and serotonin naturally increase when we are happy and energised, and cortisol is suppressed. In fact, a positive outlook in life is thought to be able to add up to eight years to a life, so if we know colour affects our moods and outlook, then we know that colour is important as we age.” So how else do we know colour is important in ageing? Psychologists have documented that colour does more than appeal to the senses. It also boosts memory by helping us to process and store images more efficiently than black and white would. People suffering from dementia may have visuo-perceptual difficulties, for example they may mistake a blue coloured floor as water or may

42 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

have problems telling the difference between blue and purple.

AGEING STYLISHLY Venables argues every decade or so, we change the way we dress because the psychological drivers to keep us feeling attractive and healthy change with age. “For women in their 50’s in particular, there is often a stark realisation that weight, skin and physical appearance are changing. For those in their 60’s, many will be coming to the end of a career. In our 70’s plus we may feel most positive through the gift of grandchildren.” Our skin also changes, intrinsically because it may become more dry and atrophied, with loss of elasticity and new fine wrinkling because of hormonal changes and a decline in tissue function; and extrinsically because of exposure to ultraviolet light including altering pigmentation and collagen degeneration. Whilst we don’t change so much as we age that our colour seasons alter, we can apparently shift within our season. “We suggest that clients get re-rated every five to seven years to check that their wow colours haven’t shifted slightly because, as we age, we lose some of the contrast in our natural colouring which fade with time. The right coloured make-up is a good way of adding the contrast back into natural colouring. “Essentially wearing the right colours, feeling great about ourselves, and shining rather than becoming increasingly invisible is a vital part of active and positive ageing.”

THE PROCESS OF COLOUR ANALYSIS House of Colour personal stylists use a selection of either yellow or blue based colours to test what suits each client. Fabric drapes are held against the face to determine the most appropriate range of colours, aptly labelled: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Accessories and make-up are also discussed as part of the programme to assess what really suits the client and what makes them look healthy. The process consists of wearing a white cloak, facing the mirror with hair tied

back in natural daylight to stop any distractions. Colours are compared with the pigments that sit underneath someone’s skin to determine which colours of clothing and accessories lift the face, and which ones are more unflattering. HISTORY OF COLOUR ANALYSIS In the 20th century the Swiss artist Johannes Itten, who worked and taught at the Bauhaus School of Art in Germany, is attributed with being the first person to associate colours with four types of people and the twelve point colour wheel which is widely used today on paint charts for home decorators, in dyeing kits and in hairdressers' colour charts. Itten and others, through their involvement with colour, established that each individual has a basic skin pigment which falls into one of four groupings which are defined by the unique combination of depth, hue and tone; in colour analysis these have become known as Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter because of the pattern of colours found in each group. Two of these groups reflect warm-based colours which complement Spring and Autumn; the other two reflect cool-based colours which enhance Summer and Winter. Robert Dorr, an artist who knew of Itten's theories of colour groupings, questioned his medical friends who confirmed that the make-up of the skin's layers can be tinged slightly blue or yellow. The base colour or undertone gives the hue while the surface colour is known as the overtone hence someone can be blue-based with yellowish overtones or yellow-based with a bluish look. The 'Image Consultant' was born.

FASHION KNOW YOUR NEUTRALS It is always sensible to ground most of your core investment pieces (suit, skirt, trousers, jacket) in a darker neutral and add your best colours for impact through your tops, jewellery, bags, lipstick, shoes or other accessories. Don’t be shy. Neutrals are a wonderful foundation for work but colour is likely to make you more memorable than if you were in just black and white. Psychologists reckon you are up to 10 per cent more memorable if you pick a colour, even in its neutral tone. If you’re a winter palette, consider silver, charcoal, indigo, navy, mole and stone. They are a simple but a fun variation to the typical black, white and grey. If you’re a summer colour theme, pink beige, mushroom, rose brown, winter white, french navy, dark blue grey, light blue grey, airforce blue and burgundy. Burgundy also works wonders as a bold lipstick or can be blended into a smokyeye for a change to typically bare-faced, work make-up look. For those with an autumnal palette, pick dark brown, tan, oyster, coffee, camel, beige, khaki, lizard grey, dark olive, bronze and a marine navy. Particularly for accessories like shoes, belts and coats. This will add diversity to a classic work wardrobe and help to make you stand out and increase your confidence at work. Spring colour themes can be made neutral with choices like chocolate, beige, dove grey, light dove grey, bright navy, oxford blue, tan, honey, oatmeal and cream. Blues work well as flattering skirts or trousers and creams look lovely on top as a blouse, jumper or cardigan. Don’t be afraid to mix in current colour and fabric trends with traditional business wear as long as they fit within your style. It’s all about adding your own twist to your outfit. Be confident and comfortable and be visible for all the right reasons. When you want to add colour and make your outfit more memorable, a bright scarf or tie can add a pop of colour to a predominantly neutral outfit. A great way to inject colour and add impact is to wear your neutral seasonal colours but carry a statement colour tote handbag or bag. See what reaction you get. At work, perhaps wear a bold colour or pattern in just one item of your outfit. For example, without being over-the-top or flashy, you could pair a red dress with a neutral cardigan, tights and shoes.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR WINTER COAT 1. See a coat as an investment rather than a typical clothing purchase; you will be wearing it more than any other item during the cooler months. Take your time to find exactly the right one. 2. A classic coat in your seasonal neutral colour never goes out of style and you can create different looks with scarves, boots, or an amazing hat and of course a fabulous handbag! Accessorising is an easy way to change the look of your coat in an instant. If you are a warm coloured person for example, try a pop of the right shade of orange as a scarf with a dark brown coat or lift a grey coat with a splash of red if you are a cool palette! 3. Choose a colour that lights up or adds warmth to your face and do not be afraid of patterned fabrics that include more than one colour. Winter coats do not need necessarily need to be dark. If you can afford it, I recommend having one classic neutral coloured coat from your seasonal palette, perhaps chocolate, camel, grey or dark blue, depending on your season and a second coat in red or another of your brighter wow colours. Match the coat to your mood, outfit and where you are going. 4. Be practical rather than being overly concerned with trends when buying a coat. The weather at this time of year is why you need a coat in the first place so

you need one that can put up with most varied conditions. Will you be swishing around elegantly at Christmas parties or doing the school run and supermarket sweep? 5. What shape suits you? If you have a tall, narrow frame you are likely to be able to pull off a long, tailored coat with button detail. If you’re smaller than average, a knee-length coat will suit you perfectly and is great for showing off your legs too. 6. There are no set rules of course, but if you have a larger frame, opt for smooth, less bulky fabrics that offer lots of movement and hang well. 7. If you find the perfect coat but you don’t like the buttons, simply change them to something that better suits your style. 8. Don’t forget, you could be wearing layers and chunky knitted jumpers under your coat so make sure there is enough room – especially in the sleeves. 9. Colourful winter wear can lift your mood and energise you when its dull and dark outside. To help you find the right colour, do an online search for your favourite coloured coat but make sure you go in to the shop to try it on. 10. Think about how it makes you feel. If you look fabulous and feel a million dollars when it’s wrapped around your body, then it’s the right coat. Now for a matching handbag…! www.houseofcolour.co.uk

The Royal Bank of Mum and Dad

New research shows that UK parents lend their children staggering amounts of money a year to help them on to the property ladder. But what do you need to know before making that bank transfer? According to new data from Legal and General, British parents will lend their children a total of £5bn a year to buy a home in 2016, making the Bank of Mum and Dad one of the top ten mortgage lenders in the UK and responsible for some level of finance in a quarter of all purchases. Indeed, parents are set to provide an average of £17,500 for an estimated 300,000 mortgages. Grandparents are chipping in too, with an estimated 22,500 purchases supported by the older generation. The problem is, what happens when your son or daughter uses the money to invest in a property with their partner or spouse? Suddenly, the gift that was meant for your child becomes an asset that may have to be divided as part of a settlement in the event of relationship breakdown. So, before you set up shop as “the Bank of Mum and Dad”, it’s important to speak to a professional about the implications such a loan/gift could have on the whole family’s future and the best way to manage your contribution.

44 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

You might choose to give a lump sum as a gift; as long as you live for 7 years after making the gift no inheritance tax will be paid. The problem with this approach is that the gift can then be subject to division if the relationship breaks down as it is then seen as an asset of your child, not you. An alternative is to lend the money to your child and document the transaction by way of a Declaration of Trust. Whilst this may not be a tax efficient method, as it may be subject to 3% stamp duty surcharge upon purchase and Capital Gains Tax upon sale, it is a method to keep it out of reach from a third party on divorce. A Declaration of Trust allows parents to retain an interest in the property to the value of the lump sum provided, meaning this amount is not available for distribution upon divorce. Another useful document in such circumstances is a Pre-nuptial Agreement. This is a statement by the parties, of their intention as to what is to happen to the asset in the event the relationship breaks down. Whilst you cannot completely assume the courts power with

regard to financial settlements on divorce, this document can heavily influence any decision reached. Lump sum payments from parents made prior to marriage can be ring fenced by the parties entering into a Pre-nuptial Agreement, confirming that the lump sum is not to be shared in the event of divorce. Post-nuptial Agreements can also be of assistance where money is being provided to a couple during the course of the marriage i.e. to assist with moving to a larger property, school fees for grandchildren, renovations to an existing property, etc. The Supreme Court upheld that if all the appropriate criteria have been met in the preparation of a Post-nuptial document, it will be binding on the basis that, unlike a Pre-nup, there is seen to be no duress as the parties are already married. Pre-nups and Post-nups are useful when a gift is made to a child but parents want to protect it from any claim by a third party. A Declaration of Trust on the other hand, is useful when the money is loaned and not gifted to a child with a view to having the money paid back i.e. when a property is sold, or where parties are co-habiting and there is an unequal contribution to the purchase price.

Christmas with Gordon

Beef Wellington Menu Pan-fried scallops with caper, raisin and olive vinaigrette This is a slightly different version of one of my signature restaurant dishes. The vinaigrette – with green olives and a little balsamic vinegar added – is more of a thick and creamy dressing. If you have any leftover, save it to serve with steamed or roast fish. Needless to say, the scallops must be very fresh. Serves 4 250g medium new potatoes, scrubbed sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2–3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle 12 large king scallops, shelled and cleaned 70g mixed baby salad leaves squeeze of lemon juice 1.

Cook the potatoes in a pan of salted water for 12–15 minutes until just tender. Drain and leave until cool enough to handle, then peel away the skins and slice into 5mm thick rounds. Set aside.

2. For the vinaigrette, put the capers, raisins, olives and water into a small pan and bring to a simmer. Immediately tip into a food processor and add the vinegar, olive oil and some seasoning. Whiz until smooth. 3.

When ready to serve, heat a little olive oil in a large frying pan and sauté the sliced potatoes with some salt and pepper for 2 minutes on each side, or until golden and crisp. Remove and keep warm.

4.

Wipe the pan clean with kitchen paper, then heat a little more oil in it until very hot. Lightly season the scallops on both sides then sauté in the oil for about a minute on each side, until golden brown and slightly springy when pressed. Remove from the pan to a warm plate and rest for a minute.

5.

Meanwhile, toss the salad leaves with a little drizzle of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch each of salt and pepper. Pile a little mound in the centre of each serving plate. Surround with the pan-fried scallops and arrange the potato slices around them. Spoon over a little vinaigrette and serve immediately.

Christmas Beef Wellington Beef Wellington is always impressive, but my updated version is a real special occasion treat. I’ve retained the luxurious character of the dish and, for a festive touch, added cooked chestnuts to the mushroom duxelles – for a delicious twist on an old classic. This has to be one of my all-time favourite main courses. Serves 4–6 900g piece beef fillet of even thickness (from the centre cut) sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp olive oil English mustard, to brush meat Mushroom duxelles: 700g chestnut mushrooms, cleaned and stalks removed handful of cooked chestnuts 1 garlic clove, peeled and chopped 2 thyme sprigs, leaves only To assemble: 8 slices of Parma ham 500g ready-made all-butter puff pastry plain flour, to dust 2 egg yolks, lightly beaten with 1 tbsp water (eggwash)

1. Trim the beef of any sinew and season well with salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a high heat, add the fillet and quickly sear the outside all over for about 5 minutes until evenly browned, turning as necessary. Transfer to a plate and while still hot, brush all over with mustard. Set aside to rest. 2. For the duxelles, put the mushrooms, chestnuts and garlic in a food processor with a little salt and pepper and blend to a fine paste, stopping to scrape down the sides a few times. Heat a dry large frying pan. Scrape the mushroom paste into the pan and add the thyme leaves. Cook over a high heat, stirring occasionally, to drive off the moisture and intensify the flavour. The duxelles must be sufficiently dry otherwise it will make the pastry soggy; the mixture should adhere easily. Spread out on a tray to cool. 3. Place a large piece of cling film on a clean surface. Lay the Parma ham slices on top, overlapping them slightly, to form a rough rectangle large enough to envelop the beef fillet, making sure there are no gaps. Season the ham with a few twists of pepper then, with a palette knife, spread the duxelles on top, leaving a 2.5cm margin along the edges. 4. Lay the beef fillet along the middle of the mushroom layer. Keeping a tight hold of the cling film from the outside edges, neatly roll the Parma ham and duxelles over the beef into a tight barrel

shape. Twist the ends of the cling film to secure. Refrigerate for 15 minutes to firm up.

5. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a large rectangle, the thickness of a £1 coin and brush with some of the eggwash. Unwrap the beef from the cling film and place it in the middle. Leaving a large enough rectangle to wrap around the beef, trim off the excess pastry. Roll the pastry around the beef to envelop it and then press the edges to seal. Pinch the pastry at the ends to seal and trim off the excess. Wrap the log tightly in cling film and chill for 10 minutes, or overnight if you are preparing ahead. 6.

Preheat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Remove the cling film and brush the parcel all over with egg wash. Lightly score the pastry at 1cm intervals with the back of a small knife for a decorative effect, if you wish. Place on a baking tray, sprinkle with salt and bake for about 35 minutes; if the pastry appears to be browning too quickly, lower the setting slightly. Leave to rest in a warm place for about 15 minutes before cutting into thick slices to serve, with the accompaniments.

300g watercress, trimmed 150ml water 100g spinach leaves 2–3 tbsp double cream sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Wash the watercress well, then put into a large saucepan with the water and bring to the boil. Cover and cook over a medium heat for 4–5 minutes. 2.

Rinse the spinach leaves, then add them to the watercress and stir well. Cook for a further minute, or just until the spinach leaves have wilted. Drain in a colander, pressing with the back of a ladle to extract as much moisture as possible.

3.

Tip the watercress and spinach into a blender or food processor, add 2 tbsp cream and blend for 5–10 minutes to a very smooth purée, scraping down the sides a few times. Taste for seasoning. If you prefer the purée thinner, add another 1 tbsp cream or a tiny splash of hot water and gently reheat before serving.

Truffle Mashed Potatoes Serves 4 1kg potatoes, such as Desirée, peeled and quartered sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 200ml double cream 100ml whole milk 2 thyme sprigs 1 bay leaf 25g butter, in pieces, or a drizzle of truffle-infused olive oil 1 white Alba truffle (optional)

1. Add the potatoes to a pan of salted cold water, bring to the boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, until tender. 2.

Meanwhile, heat the cream and milk in a small pan with the thyme sprigs, bay leaf and some seasoning. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat and simmer gently for a few minutes. Take the pan off the heat and allow the flavours to infuse for a few minutes.

3.

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain and return them to the pan. Place over a low heat for 1–2 minutes to dry them out a little. Mash the potatoes smoothly, using a potato ricer or masher into a clean pan.

4.

Pour the infused cream mixture through a sieve into a jug and discard the herbs. Over a very gentle heat, gradually add the cream mixture to the mashed potatoes and beat until smooth and creamy. Once it is all added, the mash should be soft enough to just drop from the spoon.

5.

Transfer the mash to a warmed serving dish and top with slithers of butter or a drizzle of truffle-infused oil (if you are not using fresh truffle). Finally, shave the white truffle on top, if using, and sprinkle with a pinch each of salt and pepper. Serve piping hot.

Your perfect recipe needs top quality ingredients... Pannacotta with pomegranate glaze Serves 4 2 medium sheets leaf gelatin (11 x 7.5cm) 250ml double cream 50g caster sugar 50ml milk 15ml dark rum, or to taste Pomegranate glaze: 20g caster sugar 275ml pomegranate juice Chocolate shavings: block of good-quality dark chocolate, for grating Over Christmas, it makes sense to prepare desserts that require minimal effort yet still deliver that ‘wow’ factor. Pannacotta certainly ticks all the right boxes – it’s easy to make, cheap and delectable, with a silky smooth texture that makes it one of the world’s sexiest desserts. 1. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for a few minutes. Meanwhile, put the cream, sugar, milk and rum into a saucepan and slowly bring to a simmer. Heat gently for 30 seconds, then remove the pan from the heat. Taste for flavour, adding a little more rum if you wish. 2. Squeeze the gelatine leaves to remove excess water, then add them to the cream mixture and stir until fully dissolved. Tip the mixture into a jug.

3. Now pour into 4 individual glass dishes, leaving enough room for the glaze. Leave to cool, then place the glasses in the fridge to set for at least 2 hours, or overnight if preparing ahead. 4. To make the pomegranate glaze, heat a dry frying pan. Tip the sugar into the hot pan followed by the pomegranate juice. Bring to the boil and allow to bubble for 10–15 minutes, until thickened to a sticky, syrupy glaze. Pour into a small jug and leave to cool completely. 5. Pop the chocolate in the freezer for 10–15 minutes before serving. Pour the cooled pomegranate glaze on top of the chilled pannacottas. Take the chocolate from the freezer and draw a small straight-edged knife along the flat side of the bar to make curled shavings. Top each pannacotta with chocolate shavings to serve.

My aim in choosing pictures for the DNA – Oasis exhibition was to show the unique chemistry that formed Oasis, a band that in it’s time blew all the others away. The exhibition uses much original material from ‘Was There Then’ my 1997 exhibition, which you may have seen in the Hacienda nearly 20 years ago! In my intro to the book of that name I ended with the sentence ‘Yeah, still mad for it!’ And like you, I still am.” Jill Furmanovsky.

for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs) introduced changes in 2012 to the Pet Travel Scheme which make travelling with your pet to the EU a walk in the park!

What is the Pet Travel Scheme? It is, effectively, a Pet Passport for your dog/cat/ferret which allows you to travel within the EU (and certain nonEU countries and territories) without quarantine.

Why do we need a Passport for Pets? The UK has been officially rabies-free since 1922 which is fantastic and really important that we maintain this status. There are also parasites not currently found in the UK which spread fatal diseases. The rules and guidelines set out in the Pet Travel Scheme are imposed to protect the health and safety of not only pets travelling abroad but also those remaining in the UK when others travel back into the country.

Tape worm treatment

Pets Corner Whether you prefer to go on holiday in the heat or the cool of the year, the prospect of going away as a pet owner can be tricky, especially when deciding what to do with our furry family members.

Must be given to your pet 1-5days before re-entering the UK, this must be administered by a Vet. You must wait 21days after vaccination before re-entering the UK so planning is important. Your pet no longer requires a rabies blood test following vaccination. Tick treatment before re-entry is highly recommended along with other parasite treatments depending on where you are travelling – your vet can advise on preventative treatments.

For my holiday this year I opted for a house sitter and, although my pets’ daily routine/ surroundings had not changed, I Pet Travel Scheme explained: found myself worrying and calling Pets entering or re-entering the UK from daily to check up on their well-being. the EU must have the following; This meant that much of the relaxation time was spent looking forward to a microchip seeing their expectant little faces and This can be inserted by your Vet or Nurse missing them terribly. Insurance This is not a stipulation on the Pets Travel Scheme; however, it is strongly advised. Even if you are already insured I recommend checking that your policy covers your pet abroad. Be mindful of how your pet will cope with the environment on holiday – an elderly dog may not wish to hike up Mount Everest and a thick-coated husky may not cope in 40 degree heat!

Veterinary Surgery Poisoning over Christmas Winter can be a wonderful time of year, but unfortunately it’s also the most common time for your pet to be poisoned. We have seen all of the cases below, and it’s not always a good outcome. We ask that you make yourself aware of the toxins and do not allow your pet the opportunity to consume anything listed. If the worst does happen, please make contact with your veterinary surgeon as soon as possible. The quicker that treatment is sought, the more favourable the outcome. Chocolate - Contains the toxin theobromine. Signs to look out for include vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, panting, increased heart rate. Also be aware of decorations and chocolate coins. Raisins/grapes - Cause diarrhoea, increased thirst, and can cause kidney failure within days. Christmas pudding and Christmas cake - Full of raisins and sultanas (see above). Fat/suet can also cause vomiting, stomach upsets and risk of pancreatitis. Wrappers - Foil wrappers commonly found around this time can be dangerous if ingested, causing obstructions in the gut system. Bones - We tend to cook more meat at this time of year which results in bones left lying around. Cooked bones can splinter easily and can cause large fragments to get stuck if the bone is eaten. Smaller pieces can cause gut irritation/perforation and difficulty toileting.

Antifreeze - Ethylene glycol (anti freeze) ingestion is very dangerous. It is sweet-tasting and very palatable. Even a relatively small quantity can cause serious kidney damage and can be fatal. Christmas trees and plants - Most species are low toxicity but may cause a mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and/or diarrhoea) if chewed. Tinsel and decorations can cause intestinal blockages if eaten, and holly, mistletoe and poinsettia are all toxic to dogs. Acorns - Exposure to acorns in dogs is common in the autumn and winter months. The toxic ingredient is thought to be tannic acid, which can cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Signs include vomiting, diarrhoea (with or without blood), abdominal pain, inappetance and lethargy. Ingested acorns can also cause an intestinal blockage.

Alcohol - Can be intoxicating for dogs and can cause unpleasant side effects.

For this edition we are running a competition to win £50 worth of vouchers to use on any of our services. To be in with a chance of winning please complete the word search below and send to: Queens Park Veterinary Surgery 74-76 Chorley New Road, Bolton BL1 4BY by 31st December 2016

Bolton Denture Centre

Are your Dentures causing you teething troubles? Many denture wearers suffer with poor fitting, worn out or artificial (false) looking dentures that cause the wearer to feel a lack of confidence in their dentures. This can present itself when chewing or even by just worrying about the denture dropping during a conversation. All these are issues that Bolton Denture Centre specialise in correcting. Bolton Denture Centre are the number one denture clinic in Bolton. Solely focusing on providing the highest quality dentures with the only qualified Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) in Bolton. Over recent years there have been many improvements in both the way we construct dentures and in the materials and denture teeth that we use. This means that the end result looks more natural than ever before. Why not call for a FREE Consultation to find out more about these new innovations in denture design and manufacture?

Dentures Need Regular Servicing Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are also in a pretty hostile environment in the mouth, being attacked by strong acid, bacteria, hot, cold and spicy food. Denture material absorbs liquids and food odour.

70 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Daily cleaning is essential as well as professional ultrasonic cleaning in a dental laboratory at least once a year. Due to constant bone resorbtion dentures will become loose sooner or later. Loose dentures will increase damage to the gums and bone structure, and increase the risk of breakage. Have them re-lined as soon as possible to get a good fit. It only takes a day or two. Have your dentures inspected by a Clinical Dental Technician at least every two years, or more frequently if necessary.

Your Dentures need Attention 1. When they become loose. 2. When teeth or denture base discolours. 3. When tooth surfaces become flat. 4. When denture base does not fit around natural teeth (in partial dentures).

5. When you develop deep lines around your mouth. 6. When your chin sticks out, and the corners of your lips are constantly wet, developing sores. 7. When you stop smiling and feel embarrassed.

My Dentures have become loose! This is easily remedied by a procedure know as Re-lining. A new layer of Denture base is added to your existing Denture, improving the fit and restoring confidence.

Dentures on Implants

This type of Denture is constructed in conjunction with the Dental Implant Surgeon. This is a very good procedure when the patient has limited control and retention of their Dentures. The finished Dentures ‘click’ into position offering the ultimate in Denture Retention.

Should I have a spare set of Dentures made? Yes, it is very important to have a spare set of dentures for emergencies in case of breakage.

Constructing a Good Set of Dentures Constructing a functional and aesthetically pleasing set of dentures is the most difficult task in dentistry. We are not only replacing lost teeth, but also lost tissue matter and bone. In other words, we have to re-create your facial features as they were before the loss of your natural teeth. In most cases we do not know what your teeth looked like, what size they were or what position they were in originally. We have a few indications but mostly we have to rely on our visual and artistic judgement. At the same time we have to use our technical expertise in order to make the denture stable and functional. Denture construction is more art than science.

What is a Clinical Dental Technician? A Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) is a qualified dental technician that has under gone further Education and Training in areas such as Medical Emergencies Cross Infection Control and Oral Pathology

(cancers and anomalies) to name just a few sections that make up the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology as Awarded by the Royal Collage of Surgeons (RCS). It is this qualification that allows the clinicians at Bolton Denture Centure to be able to be registered and regulated with the General Dental Council (the official body for protecting the public with regards to dentistry) and carry indemnity insurance. It is this qualification, which means that only Dentists and Clinical Dental Technicians are the only Dental Professionals permitted to supply dentures direst to the public. A dental technician is not qualified to supply a denture directly to the public. However, despite this being an act of Mal practice many technicians will still practice illegally without informing the patient that they are not qualified. If you are unsure if your denture provider is qualified; ask them for their GDC registration number, then contact the GDC to see if they are registered not just as a dental technician but as a CDT.

Bolton Denture Centre can offer all aspects of denture care including; •

It is illegal for anyone who is not a GDC registered Dentist or Clinical Dental Technician to make a dental appliance directly to the public. This includes dentures or tooth whitening. HEALTH turn kids into mindless zombies (despite studies proving the exact opposite). Sure, it's not healthy to spend all day, every day watering your virtual crops or conquering virtual worlds (like in the episode of Big Bang Theory when Penny gets addicted to online gaming), but it is actually good for you to spend a bit of time gaming. Get Your Bingo On

Three Types of Game That Train Your Brain Believe it or not, gaming can actually be pretty good for your brain. A study by the New England Journal of Medicine found that adults who frequently engage in mentally stimulating activities are 63% less likely to develop dementia. And yes, games are counted in the mentally

stimulating activity category (thanks, science). Games promote mindfulness, they sharpen our attention, and they exercise our brains. Many people still hold the view that video games are bad for us; that they

Studies have shown that online bingo has an extremely positive effect on the brain. Research conducted by the University of Southampton found that playing bingo requires rapid hand-eye co-ordination, resulting in regular bingo players' minds being faster and more accurate than those who don't play regularly. This study was conducted way back in 2002 when there were only an estimated 3 million bingo players in the UK. Through the increasing popularity of mobile bingo and online gaming (it's more popular than ever) you now don't have to trek down to your nearest bingo hall to have a go. There's an App for That The app store is brimming with all sorts of brain training games that will remind you of the good old Nintendo DS game Brain Training. A lot of these games have been designed by neuroscientists and enhance cognitive skills such as memory, attention span, problem-solving, and recognition of patterns. Although these apps have been designed specifically to train your brain, they're no less fun than other games. You can track your progress and compete against your friends; simple gamification at its best. Be Mindful

Bingo! by Joshua Rothhass

Games that promote mindfulness are also incredibly good for training your brain and enhancing mental health through activities designed to improve psychological functioning, says Nadine Kaslow Ph.D. (Professor and Vice-Chair of Emory University's Department of Psychiatry). Mindfulness games are designed to develop awareness, calm, and compassion. They take game mechanics that we're already familiar with, card games for example, and present them in a new, slightly different

The researchers found that the higher the dose of drug, the less people with Alzheimer’s declined on tests of memory and thinking skills. Researchers also performed brain scans using PET imaging and radioactive tracers that bind to beta-amyloid plaque on the study participants. They found that treatment with aducanumab resulted in a significant reduction in plaque buildup; the higher the dose and the longer the drug was given, the greater the reduction in plaque. The brains of those getting the placebo were virtually unchanged.

"Apple App Store according to the New York Times" by Wolf Gang way. One that challenges the way we think about the work and trains our brain to exercise mindfulness. Don't get me wrong, you can't use these studies as an excuse to spend all day glued to a screen. You can (and should), however, allow yourself to spend a little bit of time on a regular basis playing games and know that it's actually doing some good. The regular basis part is key, training isn't something that will happen overnight. Little but often is the way to go. So stop thinking of bingo as just a hobby, stop thinking of that game on your phone that you play when you're waiting for the bus as a distraction. Think of them as a fun, relaxing way to keep your mind healthy.

New drug for Alzheimer’s progressing to stage 3 trials.

Early testing of a new drug showed promise in reducing declines in memory and thinking skills in people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The drug, called aducanumab, also reduced levels in the brain of beta-amyloid, the toxic protein that builds up and forms telltale plaques in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s. Many experts believe that beta-amyloid plaque plays a critical role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. But so far, drugs to combat Alzheimer’s progression have shown only very limited benefit at best.

Very simply Alzheimer’s is caused when clumps of amyloid proteins clog up the brain cells and prevent them working properly. When aducanumab is administered, it seeks out and latches onto these clumps. This enables the brain to “see” the clumps and to alert the immune system which then sends cells to break up the toxic amyloids and flush them out of the brain. Phase 3 trials are conducted in large numbers of people and are a critical step in making a drug commercially available. We await the results and hope this may be a significant step in the treatment of Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Information Site. Reviewed by William J. New to Bolton Dementia Support We are very fortunate to have a new member of staff working with us who is in the process of creating our new facebook page and updating our social media, Scott SchofieldClarke has been around people living with dementia most of his life and knows first hand how dementia affects the person living with the illness and the people who care for them. Scott intends to be a point of contact for younger people who are concerned about parents or grandparents who may have dementia and can be contacted by telephoning 01204 386696 or emailing scottsclarke500@gmail.com.

Our Community Outreach service continues to be a success Alison Lowe is our Community Outreach Officer, Alison writes, “I am the Community Outreach Worker at Bolton Dementia Support. This is a new role and I’ve currently been in post ten months. In that time I have seen and spoken to over forty families. My role is to meet the person living with dementia and the carer to devise a programme to suit the individual needs of both parties. Support can take a variety of paths: Six to eight sessions to enable the person living with dementia to gain confidence to take an active role within the community. A more involved service covering for a family crisis. Advocacy service, accompanying a carer or person living with dementia to a multi disciplinary meeting and advocating on their behalf.

Training: often carers have been left to get on with the job and have no training to do so. We can help access relevant training dependant on individual needs. A bespoke service of involvement tailored to meet individual expressed needs. At the end of the term of involvement I work with the family to formulate an effective exit strategy which is acceptable to everyone and help to involve other agencies if necessary. Since starting my job at Bolton Dementia Support it’s been great to be involved in the whole process of developing the service with regards to putting my leaflet together, the referral pathway and completing the exit strategies at the end of the six to eight week sessions. The last ten months has been absolutely amazing, I have met some wonderful people who have shown remarkable courage and compassion. I’ve taken people to our memory cafés; I’ve taken a gentleman for a walk around Jumbles, as this was something he used to do before he started living with dementia, we walked a lot slower and didn’t go as far as he used to, but he still felt a great sense of accomplishment. I also take two ladies out who have early onset dementia, we have quite a few girly days where we have been out for a lunch we have been to the cinema twice, it’s been so lovely to see both the ladies forming a new friendship which is independent of their carers. I sent one carer a card to say that I was thinking of her as she was having a difficult time trying to sort funding out for her husband, this is the text she sent me “Dear Alison thank you so much for the lovely card, had a good cry when I read it. You are so lovely and kind and helpful, don’t know how I would have manage without you, you are a asset to Bolton Dementia Support” Another carer sent me a card “To Alison many many thanks for all the love and care you have shown us” It’s a wonderful feeling to know how much people appreciate the work I do. If you would like to find out more or feel that you need this service please do not hesitate to call”.

closed! It’s tricky so take care. With practice you will improve so do this every day when you’re brushing your teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil. Flexibility. Have you ever struggled to put on your hold-ups gracefully? Our ligaments and tendons tend to get stiffer after menopause so here’s a simple stretch for your hamstrings so you’ll be able to try on those thigh-high boots with ease.

5 TOP TIPS f rom M o v e it or L ose it ! January – a time of resolutions and diets – which comes precisely at the time of year we have no desire to eat salads or motivation to go jogging in the dark! Here’s 5 top tips that fit into a busy day and are exactly what we need to focus on at 50+. Think of the word FABS – which stands for Flexibility, Aerobics, Balance and Strength – and you’ll have it covered. First the Aerobics, simply climb the stairs. You won’t believe what a great all round exercise this is, not only does it work your thighs, it gets your heart pumping too. By generating heat (usually after 5 flights of stairs you’ll start to notice your breathing rate go up) you are also burning calories. And here’s the best bit, research shows the more stairs a person climbs the ‘younger’ their brain so make sure you go up and down stairs 10 times a day at home or work. Next, Strength. After 50 our muscles start to decline unless we do something to make them work against a resistance. No time or inclination to go to the gym? No problem! A simple resistance band is a fantastic bit of kit which you can use anywhere. To tone up your arms and target bra bulge, do this using a band that makes your muscles feel tired after 10 repetitions. • Sit towards the front of an upright chair, lay the band on your lap and scoop it up with palms facing upwards about hip distance apart. • Draw the hands apart but keep your elbows tucked in to your waist. • Now draw the band towards your hips taking the elbows behind you and pull your shoulder blades inwards as if you’re squeezing a grapefruit between them. • Hold for 3 seconds then take hands back to the starting position and release the tension in the band. Balance is not something we incorporate into our life unless we do yoga and often declines without us noticing. So test yourself out. Make sure you have a chair to hold onto for support, then lift one knee up so you stand on one leg. Can you hold this for 30 seconds without wobbling? If you can, that’s great, now challenge yourself to do it with your eyes

• Stand with one foot just in front of the other – heel on level with toes. • Now bend the back knee and push your bottom back, place your hands on the thigh of the bent leg. • You should notice that as the front leg straightens out you will feel a big stretch along the hamstrings. • Keep your chest lifted and abdominal muscles pulled in slightly. Hold for up to 20 seconds then repeat on the other leg.

Now put all of these together and Dance. Either join a class or simply put on your favourite music and get moving. By turning, stepping and getting your whole body moving you will get your endorphins going to lift your winter mood and help you feel FABS all year round.
