Twittering on With Tyler Grundy Starting this edition's ‘Twittering On' a rather sombre note. Remembering the vast amount of celebrities that we lost throughout 2016, the social media world has been typing in fear. Will this trend continue into 2017? (I mean it is likely, we are after all an ageing population).
Now I do not mean to boast but as I write this, I have just finished watching the series on my ultra-high definition TV and some of the scenes are truly breathtaking. I myself love the show and would recommend it to you readers today, if you have not watched it already although, I imagine many of you will have done. But I must admit, I had a second agenda other than for my viewing pleasure when I watched the show.
I shall regale you with one of my favorite tweets before moving swiftly on. I imagine you will be able to guess the famous figure to which the user was referring;
“He’s made it into 2017, Brucey! Wrap him up in cotton wool now!”
Attenborough Does It Again!
The internet following its initial airing was in uproar over a certain scene in the very first episode involving newborn iguanas and racer snakes. The scene unfolded into a deadly chase between the two. If you have seen it then I imagine the scene has stuck with you.
The original Planet Earth presented by David Attenborough is widely regarded as one of the greatest TV series’ ever produced. The series originally aired in 2006 and the follow up aptly titled Planet Earth II concluded this winter.
inside
The epic scene has been widely compared to this decade's hit show Game of Thrones. Now if you are not familiar with that show it is filled to the brim with sex, incest, and head popping violence (literally). I saw many a viewer compare the intensity of the snakes swarming the baby iguana and the close ups of its final moments of its short life with the violence and gore ever present in Game of Thrones, many noting that Planet Earth had just raised the bar. In case you are one of those not familiar with Game of Thrones, I shall regale you with a story I heard going around about the show's latest season. It is renowned for its openness in showing full frontal female nudity and there was recently a rumor stating that if the showrunners did not even the score with full frontal male nudity then the show would risk being cancelled. Coincidently, they obliged. Anyway, that is just a taster of what kind of a show Thrones is. Admittedly, the scoring of the Planet Earth scene by world-renowned

TWITTER composer Hans Zimmer did add a sense of epic proportion to the chase.
65 Years of Queen Liz!
Understandably, the internet could not miss such an opportunity to create an account for the iguana that made it to safety. With its first post being a thank you to all its fans who wished him well, while also informing us he was “bricking it” running across those rocks.
Indeed, this is the popular term of endearment for Queen Elizabeth II within the Twitter universe. As I write this section, I must admit I was a little puzzled as to how long a ‘Sapphire Jubilee’ was a recognition of. Then to realize that it was the first of its kind as no other English monarch has celebrated 65 years on the throne.
30p For A Freddo?! Yes, you read that correctly. The famous frog chocolate bar, that back in my childhood days was an affordable 10p has been steadily rising in price over the last few years. Now at the risk of not making myself sound too old, 30p in my childhood would have bought me a 10p Freddo and two 10p mixes from my local corner shop. I have no doubt this little tale will have you musing what you could have purchased with that amount of money back in the day. Some are linking the sudden rise in price with Brexit. First, they say it was the Toblerone when the chocolate bar, just weeks after the Brexit vote, announced they would be changing the traditional triangle shape of the bar. Albeit a minute change to the size of the triangles. Those passionate Twitter users have remerged here as well once again relating the rise in Freddo’s price to Brexit. Light humor over, here comes the academics. Here comes the inevitable history lesson from a history graduate. Some of you may be familiar with my historical tangents by now. Freddos were first introduced to Britain in 1973 and enjoyed their first stint on our shelves up until 1979 before again reappearing 15 years later.
The evolution of the Freddo bar can be seen above. And don’t let the picture fool you, as in recent years the Freddo has actually decreased in size as the price has increased. There is also a rumour that at one stage in the life of Freddo it stood at an absolute bargain price of 5p.
This picture is the Coronation of a young Queen Elizabeth II on the 2nd of June 1953 which took place more than a year after her reign began. I thought it was apt to take this opportunity to see what Twitter was saying about her reign as Britain’s longest reigning monarch. The most bizarre fact I have stumbled upon, although I am dubious about it, is that the Queen is the only person in the UK who does not require a driving license to drive. We really are in the realms of twittering on now.
Watch out Ticket Touts are about. In recent weeks, a string of high profile artists have announced tours of the UK. From Celine Dion, of Titantic fame and the young and hugely successful Ed Sheeran, the ginger haired bloke who started off as a busker and made it big. Both were sellouts in the multiple arenas they announced. For Sheeran the tickets ranged from a modest £44 to £77 for the better ones. Whereas for Dion officially the tickets stood at £49 to £163. Crazy right? I mean £163 for a one hit wonder, well in my eyes anyway. Now the shows are sold out, and this rather sadly is not because of committed fans but due to touts who buy tickets in bulk (in many cases you can buy up to 7 per person) and sell them on in some instances up to 10 times the normal asking price. Tickets that were originally priced at £44 are now going for the cheapest price of £152 right up to £220 and beyond. And this is on a website that is basically dedicated to the touting of tickets! We all know ticket touts to be shady men standing outside of arenas buying and selling tickets on the night. Now the game has changed.
I believe I can divide the rest of the tweets about her reign into three categories. We have the “65 years of doing nothing” brigade. We have, “Time to step down and let your son have a ago” posse and finally we have, “God save the Queen long may she reign” patriots who are the overwhelming majority in this case.
Rosie Returns! Consistent viewers of the nation’s favorite soap Coronation Street will have noticed a familiar face return to the cobbles in these past weeks. That is correct, Rosie Webster has returned! Online, fans of the show were quick to point out that although she may provide a bit of glamor and beauty for the show's male audience; it cannot make up for her lack of acting talent. One Twitter user wrote;
“Clearly Rosie Webster hasn’t spent the last few years away from Corrie at acting school”.
Fans these days will go to desperate measures to see their idols. One young Twitter user has already been forced to sell her house and car after spending £1,300 on tickets to see Ed Sheeran (pictured above) and is now moving back in with her parents. Of course, there is no guarantee the tickets will even come her way. I guess 30p for a Freddo does not sound so crazy after all. I shall leave you with some musings as I always do. How much would you be willing to pay to take you and your other half to see their favourite act? A few years ago I myself saw Sir Tom Jones who if the opportunity comes I would urge you to see. 50 quid I paid. So go on, treat yourself.

TRAVEL it not for the sea walls and drainage ditches dating back to Roman times. This precarious platform of land is something of a world apart, a ‘Fifth Continent’, but it has been vital to the defence of England since Saxon times and always prized for its busy ancient ports and fertile sheep pastures.
Mermaid Inn, Rye
Travels in History: The Fifth Continent and the Making of England. Two regions of England have a fascinating story to tell. It is one that reaches back through centuries of interaction between the people, the land and the sea, and which is found within their particularly rich and striking natural and cultural heritage.
But the distinctiveness of this open, almost eerily strange landscape is more than physical. Life on ‘The Marsh’, as locals refer to it, has evolved a fascinating character and identity of its own. People have lived here since prehistoric times but most of the Marsh would now be flooded were
ROMNEY MARSH: THE FIFTH CONTINENT. “The world, according to the best geographers, is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and Romney Marsh” (The Ingoldsby Legends by Richard Harris Barham). Situated in the south-east corner of England, Romney Marsh is one of Britain’s most unique and intriguing regions, renowned for its rugged beauty and rich history. A flat tract of some 100 square miles, it projects bravely and calmly out to sea, distinct from the rolling hills and cliffs nearby. A 28 mile long canal hugs the Marsh’s landward edge, effectively cutting it off from the mainland.

Fairfield Church
A tour of the Marsh will reveal evidence of Saxons, Vikings, Normans, notorious smugglers, Nazi spies, inspired authors and many more colourful characters. It is famous for its medieval churches, within the walls of which are clues to a forgotten past, a past that was once carried on the shoulders of Kings, Archbishops, murderous pirates and scheming politicians. The churches are sometimes the only surviving testament to whole communities that disappeared to become the eleven lost villages of the Marsh. The smuggler’s tales of Russell Thorndyke’s Dr Syn novels are perhaps the best known stories from the Marsh but many famous authors and artists have found inspiration in the hidden history and strange beauty. This summer, local resident and professional archaeologist Dr Christopher Cole, invites you to join him on a unique 5 day tour based in the historic Mermaid Inn in Rye. His passion for and knowledge of the Marsh, its people and its history, give the tour an especially intimate insight (for details see below).
Latest research and discoveries. Based in the 4-star St Giles House Hotel in Norwich, this unique six day tour includes a fascinating day on a live excavation seeing the latest discoveries being made and the field techniques used, coupled with a wider exploration of the region’s unrivalled Anglo-Saxon and medieval sites. EAST ANGLIA: ORIGINS OF ENGLAND. The rich lands of Norfolk and Suffolk are steeped in the tribal origins of England and brimming with an unmatched medieval heritage. Facing continental Europe, they have hosted wave after wave of settlers in England’s history, including Celts, Romans, Anglo Saxons, Danes and Normans. Much of the region is prone to flooding and, like Romney Marsh, the flat landscape has been reclaimed for settlement and agriculture over many centuries. It now offers both a classic and unique representation of the English countryside, and still retains its winding lanes, rolling fields, timbered villages and pebbled beaches in abundance. It could also be described as a quintessence of the history of England. It was the tribal land of the Celtic Iceni, whose fearless Queen Boudicca led an uprising against Roman rule. In Anglo-Saxon times it was the Kingdom of the East Angles, one of the most powerful of the time, and home to the warrior-kings whose burial treasures were famously unearthed at Sutton Hoo, still the richest burial ever found in northern Europe. During the Middle Ages East Anglia developed into a powerhouse of agriculture, trade and religious activity, with Norwich as England’s second city. A tour of East Anglia will reward you with some of the finest medieval architecture and pure historical interest from anywhere in England. This summer you are invited to join historian Dr Martin Locker and archaeologist Dr Neil Faulkner as they explore Anglo-Saxon villages, Norman manors and monasteries, Christian saints and pilgrims and the creation of medieval England.

a little pampering in the sun. The two of them had found the perfect solution to ensure marital harmony for their golden years. January is the perfect time of year to escape from the UK with a direct flight to Barbados and then a quick hop to join the Royal Clipper. And what a welcoming ship it is, by far the most elegant and photogenic in the port, a vision of beauty with comfort and charm in equal measures.
The Royal Clipper – The Windward Islands of the Caribbean “I absolutely must go on that ship….” Carolyn (a vibrant 65 year old Norwegian, now on her fourth Star Clippers cruise) explained over a sundowner rum punch that she had been in Barbados a few years earlier on board a large cruise liner, and her eyes were drawn across the marina. It was love at first sight, and she has never looked back.

Usually we would return to the ship for lunch which was also a buffet (including a fabulous beach barbecue in Antigua – what a way to lunch in style!), and any thought of hunger later in the afternoon was soon dispelled by tea served at 5pm in the tropical bar area where a soulful singer and keyboard player entertained.
The secret? The essence of a Star Clippers voyage is that it’s a genuine sailing experience on board the largest full-rigged ship in the world……with all of the comfort, superb dining and service of a 5 star cruise. “I still want to enjoy sailing but not with all that responsibility.” This time it was George’s turn to explain why he had the Star Clippers bug. After just a day or two, life on board established a delightful and relaxed daily routine. Rising early to enjoy the sunrise with a dazzling display of oranges and pinks through the clouds and over the hills of the islands, accompanied by the water performance of the flying fish and the birds swooping to catch them. Then with my appetite likewise awakened, it was high time for a buffet breakfast (the bread choice and quality alone rivalled any top hotel), and the not too arduous task of deciding on the plan for the day ahead. The ship called in at a different island each day (St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua, St Kitts, Iles des Saintes and Martinique), and a range of excursions were on offer.

Dinner is a la carte, where guests can choose to sit separately to eat if they choose, although it’s more interesting to be on a mixed table for 6 or 8. Evening entertainment is very informal, with a highlight being a steel band. Snorkelling equipment is available free of charge, and for those who prefer a little self-indulgence, there’s also an excellent spa with a range of treatments. Europe by Train –
an Arts and Food Tour
Fr o m S ilver T ravel A dvisor w i t h t h a n k s t o Louise H ammond
We all know that great art and wonderful meals are not be rushed, so what could be better than a relaxed trip by train through Europe, savouring both! With just a little planning, you could be delighting in the great culture and cuisine across the Channel, relaxing on your journey, marvelling at dramatic scenery and pretty countryside. Senior railcards are available, allowing you to enjoy all the benefits usually associated with youngsters on their gap years! Writer, Louise Hammond headed off to do some research, on a My InterRail trip. Leaving from re-vamped St Pancreas, a work of art in itself, her first stop was Djon, famous for mustard and also home to the Palais de Ducs which includes the famous Musée des Beaux-Arts, along with incredible half-timbered houses and cobbled streets. Not to mention the little owls (chouette) which bring good luck! Then they travelled onto Lausanne,

with a tremendous cathedral featuring Gothic carvings and a stunning view. Onwards to Milan, which is a culturevultures dream! Churches, galleries and palazzos are without doubt, here in abundance. The pastries satisfied any cake lovers’ dream that could be had and hit the spot every time. Any space can be filled with a slice of the local panettone.
And so to Venice, one of Louise’s favourite cities, where she was able to indulge in churches and their decoration to her heart’s content – Santa Maria della Fava, San Lio and San Zaccaria - Tintoretto and Canaletto feature almost everywhere. There was also a long Vaporetta aqua bus ride around the outside of the city, soaking up the sunshine, enjoying the view of the palazzos. More lovely cake was found here too - the Venetian specialties of zaletti (cornmeal biscuits with sultanas) and almond croissants and cakes from Pasticceria da Bonifacio in Calle degli Albanesi. The food markets in Venice provide
Innsbruck was the next stop, via lovely Verona for lunch, climbing high into the mountains. The pleasure of travelling by rail is a day sightseeing in each city, and then a day relaxing on the train and taking in the view. The scenery changed, from sea level in Venice, as did the buildings and the food! The following day, the boots were on for a mountain walk (13.7 miles in the end!) up the Nordkette wall of mountains along with good footpaths, with forest tracks and a steep climb for the first few hours up to Planotzenhof (good stop for drinks) to a wonderful 1777 chapel with a painted apse recently restored at Hottinger Bild at a height of 2969 feet or 905 metres. Once descended, Louise decided a trip to Café Sacher in the Hofburg Imperial Palace which serves original Sacher-Torte was essential. With the final couple of days calling, Louise took the train through the Alps to St Anton am Arlberg, with the carriages twisting and turning, dropping down slowly, ears popping through Vorarlberg to Bludenz and Feldkirch, with glimpses of waterfalls along the way. Then it was on to Leichtenstein, and finally oh so efficient Switzerland, where the highspeed train carried her to Paris in time for an evening stroll before the final day spent exploring Paris! The last day offered a walk along the Seine by the Louvre and across to Musée d’Orsay, with its rich collection of impressionist art in what was a train station but looks like a palace. It was the Paris European Heritage Days (an open week-end for free admission to attractions): the Société Générale, founded in 1864 to develop commerce and industry, was open with one of the largest mosaic floors in France. After an amazing trip, much food sampled, churches, palaces and museums visited and wonderful city life enjoyed, Louise returned to London, vowing to travel by European trains again – as soon as possible! 2017 road tax changes: What do the changes mean?
Kevin Howard, Dealer Principal at Bolton Kia
From April 1 2017 there will be big changes for UK motorists as the new road tax system comes into place. The Government are making big changes to Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) and this will affect anyone wanting to buy a new car after this date. But what does this really mean and why is it happening now? Well, the changes are part of a new road tax system set by Government which includes a complete revision of vehicle tax bands. The changes only affect cars registered on or after April 1. Cars registered before this date will be charged at the 2016/17 rates. Under the outgoing tax system, most new car buyers with low CO2 cars are paying little road tax, also known as VED (Vehicle

Excise Duty). For example, UK motorists with cars emitting under 120 CO2 will typically pay up to £30 vehicle excise duty a year. For cars registered on or after April 1 they will now have to pay £140 as a standard rate from the second year onwards. On the flip side those with cars that emit above 151 CO2 currently pay upwards of £185, on new cars with the same CO2 levels and registered after April 1 would now pay £140 per year. Whilst the first year road tax is included in the OTR price of the car, subsequent – from second year onwards - VED will be £140 per year, regardless of the CO2 of the
vehicle. The only VED exempt cars are those emitting zero CO2. For cars costing more than £40,000 list price there will also be a new fiveyear supplement to pay, which is set at £310 a year from the second year.
How will this affect you? Don’t panic! The new VED system only applies for new cars registered after April 1st 2017 which means that your existing vehicles or vehicles due for tax renewal won’t be affected. However, if you are thinking of buying a new car after April 1 then you’ll have a few things to consider. Firstly, how much are you planning on spending?
At Kia, we have a wide range of cars available and are confident that you will still be able to find a model to suit your needs, from the exciting All-New Kia Rio to the ever-popular Kia Sportage. Secondly, you need to consider if you’ll be better off buying a new car before or after the new car tax system comes into force. UK motorists may benefit from buying their next car before the new VED changes come into place. However, the duty rates depend on the type of new car you’re planning to buy and its CO2 emissions.
system will mean that only electric vehicles that emit zero CO2 are road tax free. This means that if you’re planning on purchasing an electric (EV) vehicle you won’t be affected after April 1 with increased road tax charges.
What alternatives are available to me?
Alternative fuel vehicles – such as the Kia Niro (Hybrid Vehicle) and Kia Optima PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) will pay £130 a year road tax, again from the second year onwards.
Under the outgoing rates, lowemission petrol and diesel cars are tax exempt, however the new VED

electric vehicle with a range of up to 132 miles priced at £25,495 after the Government’s current Plug-in Car Grant. Bolton Kia has a wide range of offers on at the moment but for those that are looking to buy a car after April then keep an eye out – Bolton Kia will continue to have a great range of offers for customers. Rick Astley The Quiet Man of Pop You won’t see photos of him in celebrity magazines falling out of nightclubs at 4am or attending every premier in sight. Yet, in almost three decades in the limelight the shy lad from Warrington, Cheshire, has had a string of hits and possesses one of the most distinctive voices in the business. He has just finished a sell-out tour across the USA and the UK and the reaction from fans old and new underlines the long-lasting appeal of the clean-cut icon who, with his smart hairstyle and metrosexual wardrobe, looks years younger than 51. This timeless assurance may be down to his simple philosophy on life:
“I’m a person who tries not to have regrets.” Some of that down-to-earth approach could lie in his Northern upbringing. He was the youngest of three boys and a

girl and showed musical promise early, singing in the choir at his local church at 10. He learned to play the drums, piano/ keyboards, guitar and saxophone and in his teens was gigging in pubs and clubs with various bands like FBI. He commented: “I used to go to soul nights because I loved dancing, and so did my friends, and we loved the music. We used to go to listen to black American soul.” In 1985, Rick was performing with FBI, playing their own music, when he caught the attention of well-known record producer Pete Waterman. He persuaded the youngsters to come to London to work at his company, PWL recording studio, under what became the famous production team of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. In ‘80s pop, Stock Aitken Waterman was THE leading force.
During this time of learning, the young singer also doubled as studio teaboy. As he recalled: “Working as a teaboy may have helped my confidence but not everyone else was so pleased. I could never remember who had milk or how many sugars, and I had an unusual talent for spilling tea on the recording console!” At just 21 in 1987, Rick released his debut single “Never Gonna Give You Up”, and it had a huge impact. It took instant residence in the charts and became the year’s best-selling single in the UK as well as making No.1 in 16 different countries. The song became the centrepiece of debut album “Whenever You Need Somebody” which sold a remarkable 15 million copies worldwide. He even cracked the US Top 10 – a notoriously difficult achievement for any British singer, especially with a debut single, earning him a Grammy nomination for “Best New Artist.”
CELEBRITY INTERVIEW Suddenly, the shy Northern lad was catapulted into the international world of stardom, and the following years saw Rick released a string of further hits. The soulful songs with a mature depth of delivery from his rich voice made him a household name. “Whenever You Need Somebody”, “Hold Me In Your Arms, “She Wants To Dance With Me”, Take Me To Your Heart” and “Hopelessly” all propelled him into singles’ charts across the globe. During the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, Rick Astley was everywhere – on TV, radio and the music charts. By 1993, he was a wealthy man with little to prove to the world. Some might say his innate shyness made him a slightly uncomfortable fit with the often brash world of celebrity. By then, he had a baby daughter, Emilie, and a wife, and he wanted to spend more time with them. So he decided to retire - at the age of just 27.
material I was working on was pretty good. So I decided to go for it.” It proved to be a good decision. The album reached No.1 and the single from it, “Dance” with its official video proved to be a hit. Suddenly, Rick was everywhere in the media again – although this time, a more assured and confident performer, comfortable in his own skin. As he insisted: “My time away from the spotlight allowed me to rediscover my love for music, and I’m doing it for me now and no-one else.” The quiet man of pop has found his voice in more ways than one.
For much of the ‘90s and into the 2000s, he was out of the music business, out of the spotlight. Then, in 2001, Rick returned, signing a co-publishing deal with Polydor and releasing single “Keep It Turned On.” When his first compilation album “Greatest Hits” came out in 2000, it reached No.16 on the UK albums’ chart. In 2003, he reached No.10 in the UK as a songwriter with “Shakespeare’s (Way With) Words” performed by boyband One True Voice. In 2004, Rick toured for the first time in 14 years, which led to a record contract with Sony BMG. In 2005, he released the album “Portrait” covering classics like “Vincent” and “Close To You”. In 2008, the album “The Ultimate Collection: Rick Astley” burst into the public’s consciousness and again went into the UK Top 40 albums’ chart. Later that year, Rick was nominated for the “Best Act Ever” award at the MTV Europe Music Awards and fans went into over-drive to ensure their hero received it. On the back of this, “Never Gonna Give You Up” returned to the UK charts – more than 21 years after it was released. During the late 2000s, Rick continued extensive touring across the globe and in 2010 was a special guest on Peter Kay’s tour “The Tour That Doesn’t Tour Tour … Now On Tour” and to mark the occasion, he released a new single, “Lights Out”, on his own label which was well-received. He became a DJ for London’s Magic FM with a popular weekly show, then co-hosted Chris Evens Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, again with Peter Kay. In 2016, Rick released “Keep Singing” from his forthcoming album “50” – prompted by his turning 50. He told Amanda Holden on the “Lorraine” show: “It was a big milestone. I got back in the studio and friends were telling me the

HOME ALTERATIONS TO MAKE LIFE EASIER IF an Englishman’s home is his castle then it’s up to each of us to keep that “safe place” as comfortable and easy to live in as possible as time goes by.
You can often adapt a room yourself, turning a small bedroom into an office or sewing room, or creating an extra small lounge to give you both somewhere to sit separately where you are in charge of the TV remote control!
Fortunately, there’s never been a better time to improve homes with easy living in mind. Innovations are emerging constantly - from something as simple as a heated butter knife that slices through cold spreads to smart plugs that switch electronics on and off remotely.

Perhaps it’s time to treat yourself to a new suite or even a large corner sofa that makes the most of your room, allowing plenty of seating options and looking thoroughly modern. Many have integrated recliners to allow you to really stretch out and relax. Pop down to your local furniture store or browse online to see what suits your rooms best and what fits both your lifestyle and budget.
A sensible starting point is to look at whether your PROPERTY is too big or too small for you. When family have grown up and moved away, it’s often a good time to look around you and honestly assess whether you either need the space you’ve got or if you need more. The former could prompt a move to something smaller, more economical but which involves a more comfortable lifestyle. If the latter applies, then it might be time to consider either adapting the space you have more effectively or extending it to meet your needs.

Try a large tub instead of your old bath, a walk-in shower instead of your current model and twin sinks and vanity units that allow you both to get ready at once. And if you’ve always meant to improve your GARDEN but never got around to it, don’t forget that having a pleasant garden in which to relax and spend time happily is really good for your mental and physical wellbeing. So the time may be right for new decking, some easygoing garden furniture and planned areas of greenery, shrubbery and blooms to delight you and make you feel well all the year round.

HOME addressed this problem, and a whirlpool bath, which gives healing massage from the whirlpool jets, is available. However, you must enter the bath, then wait for it to fill before you can bathe, and it must be emptied before you exit. Another option is the walk in shower with seat, and grab handles. Anyone planning a bathroom for the elderly or disabled should also remember to design the position of the sink to allow space beneath to pull a wheelchair up close, and to look for toilets which are higher than usual, with sturdy grab handles.
Accessories Towel rails can be conventional, or can be obtained resembling modern art. From circular to spiral, and various shapes between, there are also hot boxes for storing towels, and even one designed to look like a ladder, with heated shelves.
get the look ... How do you view your bathroom? A place to relax, dream, and recharge. Or as a purely functional place to shower and get set for the day. Either way, there are so many innovations now in bathroom design, that the avocado suite and those depressing shower curtains are as old hat as the tin bath by the kitchen fire. For the purely functional bathroom, but with a 2lst century look, there are the wet rooms. Wet rooms take up about the same space as a bath, but allow much more space than a shower. Going a stage further, you can now install a steam shower with bath, combined with chromotherapy lighting to match your mood, hydro massage jets and whirlpool bath combination. If you’re feeling sociable, you can go for a two person steam shower with folding seats and glass back panels. Features include body massage jets and an FM radio. Or how about a sauna and steam shower combination unit, with body jets, FM radio, hands free telephone and CD input. But maybe you’re one of those people who like to relax and dream in your bath, or watch your favourite TV programme as you lie back in your favourite scented bubbles, gently massaged by whirlpool jets. Whirlpool baths are available as:
Two person corner whirlpool baths with FM radio Two person corner bath with hand shower, FM radio and hydro massage jets. Built in television, with a heated glass screen which keeps the picture clear of condensation, built in digital tuner, stereo sound with waterproof flush mounted speakers. Hand basins have come a long way – basins are available which look like works of art, in clear glass, or bronze, in round or rectangular shapes and wall mounted, leaving floor space clear. Lavatory pans can also be obtained that are wall hung, making it easier to keep the floor area around it clean. For a wet room or shower, water tiles are an innovation. This new system of body sprays and showerheads can be fitted into a shower wall or ceiling to create a customised shower. The number of jets, the height and position can be fitted to the customers’ requirements.
For the less able The problems for those unable to climb into a conventional bath are huge. No one likes to have to ask for help in taking a bath unless they have to, and so they tend to put it off, with resultant hygiene problems. The walk-in bath has
Wall and floor tiles Available in a huge range of styles and materials. From marble to ceramic, the range is so vast, that you can be spoiled for choice. From pretty to functional, arty to natural, there’s a range out there to suit your design. The accessories Nothing personalises your bathroom more than the accessories. From a bathroom cabinet behind a picture, to towels, or a linen bin, which is also a seat. Wall cupboards can be streamlined white, or wood, and mirrors can be large, to give the feeling of more space in a small bathroom. Toothbrush holders, soap dishes, and towel hooks can all be chosen in a style to harmonise with the look you’ve chosen. A beautiful bathroom enhances your home and provides a bolthole to relax and unwind, so go for it, and enjoy it for years to come.
The windows To continue with the clear, uncluttered effect, there’s nothing as efficient in a bathroom as a screen. If you have jars and bottles on your window ledge, the screen can be fitted inside the window frame to leave the ledge clear, or outside the frame, so that the window ledge is covered when the blind is down. Either way, your cosmetics don’t have to be moved every time you want privacy. Blinds can be bought in a variety of styles and colours to suit your overall design.

Shower Screens
Simple Showering Solutions No more struggling to get in or out of the bath when you install a modern, low-level, bath-replacement shower solution or wetroom. You can enjoy easy, comfortable showering; incorporating all the benefits needed to help navigate and access the shower area in safety. Showering specialists Impey, in conjunction with Plumb Factory, explain how to simply create an effective, attractive and safe showering space in your home, with minimum disruption.
Shower Tray or Wetroom Removal of a bath frees-up floor space, and offers greater ease of access, with no necessity to step up into a bath or shower. You can then choose either a bath-replacement tray or opt for a levelaccess wetroom.
Shower Tray Offering plenty of room to shower, a large-size, low-level shower tray, will ensure that you can enter and exit a showering area securely and easily.
wetroom can be installed anywhere within a property (not just on a ground floor), it enables effective use of floor space, which can be beneficial in smaller properties. Your installer will recommend the best type of wetroom products for your property. Impey offers a large range of floor-formers which enable the quick and easy creation of a leak-free shower space.
With a step-height of only 24mm, Impey’s Mantis is the lowest tray available on the market and comes in seven sizes, including two bath replacement sizes; meaning the bath area is quickly covered with minimal repair. The small step-height also means it can be accessed by a wheelchair user, with no ramps. Mantis can also be fitted above or below ground to suit your requirements in certain locations, so check with your installer if you’d prefer completely level-access entry.
Support Rails To enable best use of your new showering space, support rails are an essential addition. A combination of vertical, angled and horizontal rails will offer maximum safety and security. The Boston Comfort & Safety range is a design-led selection of bathroom accessories, which can be fitted with the optional anti-slip grip for increased peace of mind when standing or showering. When not in use as a safety feature, they make attractive, contemporary towel rails.
If you like to relax in the shower, a wall-mounted shower seat is an ideal addition. Showering when seated can diminish the risk of slipping or falling whilst in the shower. Impey’s Slimfold seat is easy to use, comfortable and available in a variety of attractive colours. It also has a contemporary look and folds neatly away when not in use.
Shower Tray Slip Resistance
A wetroom is a level-access shower area with built-in drainage; combining modern luxury with easy access and easy clean functions; using up-todate technology to create leak-free showering.
When selecting a tray be aware of slip resistance options. Although no shower tray can be classed as 100% slip-resistant, they can be measured and classified according to the level of slip resistance they offer, using a measurement is a called a DIN Rating. Impey’s Mantis tray benefits from incorporating a slip resistant satin tread

Some installations require a glass screen, to minimise splash to other parts of the bathroom. From luxury, full-height glass screens to free-standing half-height options, a variety of shower doors and screens are available which are compatible with shower tray installations or wetrooms and can offer varying degrees of support.

If you do need an item but not immediately, file or store it away in a way that easily lets you find items when you need them. We suggest transparent folders and boxes help you more easily see things that are stored. Organising papers and objects as they come into your environment only takes a few seconds. However, if you put them in a pile, the pile will continue to grow and will become increasingly difficult to organise later on.
Group Items Always group your items together by task or purpose. For example, keep stamps, envelopes and address labels together and make letter sending organised and easy. Or keep notes and references for a particular project in one specific file and box. By doing so, you’ll not only save yourself time, but you’ll also make tidying up later super quick and easy! It’s much easier to put several items back in the same box or drawer than to put them all back in different places
Make tidying up a nightly routine
Streamlining: A Way To Save Yourself Time & Stress Does mess cause you stress? Do you despair at being disorganised? Does your environment inspire you and give you the confidence to make the most of your time? Many people believe creativity thrives in chaos the truth however, is quite different. Most of us work to our best abilities in an organised, orderly environment that is free from any distractions.
Now let’s get streamlining!
Excess clutter can disrupt our concentration. It’s near impossible to maintain our focus when we have to constantly search to find what we need. An organised, streamlined environment is the best way to maintain productivity and encourage clear thinking and creativity. It allows you to spend less time on chores and more time doing the things you like to do.
These are the things that drain your energy and take up time and space and can make you feel guilty. So as you need to reduce your clutter and gain back time and space just let it go. Try decluttering in short sessions and work methodically through one area at a time so that you stay motivated and can see the difference that you are making.
32 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Be ruthless We could write lots of articles on decluttering tips and ideas but there isn’t room to go in depth in this article. Briefly and as a generalisation then if you haven’t used an item or worn a garment in the last 12 months then you are very unlikely to use or wear it in the future.
It only takes 28 days to develop a new habit, make a nightly tidy up yours. Gather stray papers and objects and keep them where they belong, this shouldn’t take any longer than five or ten minutes. This tiny task will ensure you start your day in an organised, tidy workspace, helping you to focus and feel more calm and centred. Involve your family too – it’s not just one person’s responsibility. Label up a container or basket for each person in the house and if you find a possession of theirs lying around just pop it in their basket. Then each day they can put their possessions away in the right place.
Work with your natural instinct, not against it. Start looking to where things naturally wind up and make a home for them there. This might mean fixing a shelf for reference books you need to display or storing them on a bookshelf, or placing a shoe rack by the front door. The key is to install an organised storage system where your objects naturally wind up instead of leaving them there in a messy, cluttered way.

The probiotics then absorb large amounts of humidity and develop into very active organisms; they multiply X 100 in 24 hours and magically clean up your bed textiles! In the sleep environment, House Dust Mite Allergy (HDMA) is a growing reason for concern. Allergic symptoms are triggered each time people inhale the allergen while resting or sleeping. Sensitivity to the house dust mite allergen has a negative impact on the quality of sleep. 66% of all mites are found in bed, where people spend on average 52.5 hours per week (source Allergy UK) and they are fully exposed to the allergens of the house dust mite. 60% to 80% of all asthma sufferers are hypersensitive to dust mites. HDMA complaints peak in autumn as people spend more time inside, as it gets darker and the weather gets more humid. Every mattress that has been used for 6 months contains mites. A test on a used mattress showed that Purotex had cleaned up 89.3% of house dust mite allergen after only 2 weeks, a remarkable result! Purotex reduces humidity, cleans up allergens and creates a clean and healthy sleeping environment. Purr-O-Lux is proud of their commitment to tradition and craftsmanship when it comes to the manufacture of all of their mattresses. With their new self-cleaning range, developed using cutting edge Purotex textiles, Purr-O-Lux have created a mattress that offers incredible comfort and durability and, if cared for properly, can last for 30 years or more. Purr-O-Lux believe that adverts and publicity suggesting you change your mattress every 8 years simply isn’t true. Purr-O-Lux are 100% confident that their entire range of mattresses, if cared for properly, will last a lot, lot longer.

Purotex – Breathe… Sleep… Enjoy your nights! Dust mites are found in every home and their favourite spot is the bed: They thrive in a warm, humid and dark environment with plenty of food. People provide the heat and humidity while sleeping and there are "mountains" of micro skin cells to eat. Purotex is a textile treatment that uses five 100% natural bacteria - or probiotics -, selected for their ability to clean up house dust mite allergen along with other allergen types. Purotex mattress textiles contain millions of probiotic capsules, more than enough to outlast the life span of a mattress. In an environment with drastically reduced allergen, the risk of allergic symptoms is reduced considerably.

HOME AND GARDEN Great start. The top section that has the handle will be flipped upsidedown to become the planting section, and the bottom part of the bottle is now the water reservoir. Fill the reservoir with about 30 mm (1.in) of water. Grab your old cotton t-shirt. It’s time to create your ‘wick’, which will help pull the water from the reservoir to the soil where your seedling will use it. Have you ever dipped a tissue in a glass of water and watched the water travel vertically through the fabric? That’s what your cloth will do, too. Cut a 20 mm hole. Push the wick through the bottom of the planter – where the lid once was – leaving half of it DANGLING.

Self-watering milk container got milk? • 1 x 2-litre (68 fl oz/8 cup) empty milk bottle with lid • permanent marker • scissors • old cotton t-shirt • domestic stapler and staples • premium organic potting mix • seedling of choice
I never really came to grips with the scale of the dairy industry until I had kids. Within a couple of years my partner gave birth to two beautiful little girls and before we knew it, both of them turned into milk monsters. Milk is everything for a milk monster. It is their mornings, their nights, their middle of the nights and, when in
doubt, it is any other time of day they start misbehaving and tearing the place apart. I still don’t feel completely comfortable that my children’s main source of nourishment comes from a farm animal that goes moo, but I am comfortable and confident that I am now truly a parent. We now duly pay taxes and contribute to the economy because our kids drink most of our income in milk. Rather than live in fear at the idea of an empty bottle of milk when the monsters are calling, shift your focus to creating a handy planting device, because a bottle can be easily converted into a selfwatering planter. A planter that waters itself you say?! Yes, it is possible to build a mini wicking planter using nothing more than an old milk container and some simple household materials. This could be the beginning of the end of the milk horror story, and the time you start feeding the monsters more vegetables instead.
Staple the top of the wick using a conventional office or domestic stapler. This will keep it from slipping. Cut a cross into the lid. Feed the wick through the lid and screw it back onto the milk bottle. This will allow the wick to DRAW WATER up into the planter, while the cap will prevent soil from falling into the reservoir. Transformation is nearly complete. Now, combine the two sections to create the Optimus Prime of small space gardening. Organic potting mix. You know, the good stuff. The stuff that SMELLS LIKE DARK CHOCOLATE. Now, take your seedling of choice and plant it into your soil. Ideally you want a plant that can mature in this small space, such as a variety of lettuce or a basil plant. Water it in so that the soil is damp. The wick will draw water from the reservoir below and replenish the plant as required. Top up from time to time or as the water level drops. Behold! A thing of inexpensive, functional, unbridled BEAUTY. Wicking beds for everyone!
Cut the plastic milk bottle horizontally about a third of the way down, just underneath the handle. You want this to be even, so rather than free-styling it, make a line and follow it.

The only fencing you need... Are you fed up with painting your fence year in year out with expensive treatments? Well now you do not have to, as this amazing Colourfence is maintenance free and never needs painting. Steve Beaumont is running the only firm which offers Colourfence in the Bury and Bolton area. This is great news for homeowners who have become tired of the costly, timeconsuming and never-ending upkeep involved in timber fencing. Colourfence is the smart choice for long-lasting, low-maintenance fencing which comes with a 25 year guarantee and the builtin strength to withstand harsh climates including wind gusts of up to 130 miles per hour.
Timber fences need annual upkeep and painting, and yet they will age, spoil and need replacing within a matter of years.
Over the past 12 years, Colourfence has altered the way in which gardens can be fenced, and it is now available locally. Just imagine, for the price of a comparable quality timber fence, you could have a fence that’s professionally installed, will stay in place no matter what, and requires no more work than the occasional hose down with water to keep it looking as good as new. Creosote, fence paint, wood stain — all things of the past with Colourfence, so it’s time for the fence brush to be consigned to the dustbin. All surveys and installations are handled by Steve and his team, who promise an honest and friendly evaluation of your fences, and a noobligation, no-strings attached quote. Not only will a Colourfence product provide the perfect backdrop to your garden all year round and perfect privacy from prying neighbours’ eyes, it will also give the peace of mind of having a most secure boundary to your property. With 80 per cent of burglaries taking place after access through garden fences, according to Steve this has to be an added bonus which can’t be ignored.
A good-looking & well maintained fence enhances the appearance of your garden as well as improving security & safety for your family Steve, who has more than 40 years’ business experience, said:“This is great news for the people of Bury, Bolton and the surrounding areas as Colourfence is a premium fencing solution at affordable prices, choosing the product line is a no-brainer. “There’s virtually no maintenance, and it offers so much more strength and durability than timber fences,” he said. “We offer a no-nonsense, all-in price which includes installation by ourselves. “Combined with the cost and guarantees, this means that Colourfence is much better value than timber in the long term.”
Colourfence, on the other hand, is made of a strong Colorbond steel, with a special anti-corrosion layer that won’t scratch or rust, topped with a special coating, primer and a beautiful finish coat in four colours to choose from. Matching railings and gates are also available, which are guaranteed not to rust of flake for 10 years. Colourfence built its business model on ethical trading, and promises that it will never use hard-sell methods. CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL Jack a happy customer from Bolton... “Right from our call to arrange a quote which was dealt with in a friendly and courteous manner, everything was dealt with very efficiently, from the work force arriving on time, working quickly and being extremely tidy. The work was carried out over two days including removal of all waste and tidying. HOME AND GARDEN
With the raised garden bed front and centre, life was so uncomplicated. Our style of edible gardening was more broadly based on the themes of permaculture back then.
Building a raised bed or veggie patch • rake • tape measure • pencil • 8 x cypress pine lengths: 3.6 m x 200 mm/38 mm (11 ft 9. in x 8 in/1. in) • circular saw • 100 x 70 mm (2. in) bulge head screws • drill set • spirit level
The Good ol’ days There was once a time when the world of the Little Veggie Patch Co (LVPC) only featured the raised garden bed – and cups of tea in between. A typical day would entail a trip to the timber
yard for some 38 mm (1. in) cypress pine beauties, a trip to Bunnings for some 75 mm (3 in) baton screws, and a return trip home because we had forgotten the drill. It was a world that in itself was quite worldly, because the early days of LVPC was a melting pot of cultures that came together and built raised garden beds. The first person to get involved was a passionate travelling Frenchman by the name of Sylvain.
Larger spaces, more interaction between the elements, a more complete cyclical system. Along with a garden bed, there may be some fruit trees, a composting system, and the notion that perhaps one day the owners would get off the grid. Since then we have pulled away from traditional permaculture because one of its basic ideas is to take what you have got, and then improve it. But how can you take a slab of concrete on the 35th floor and use it to grow plants? A business evolution has led us to smaller and even smaller space gardening, and that’s the place we find ourselves now.
A cracking Easter’s in s at the Mark
Of course, if you have room for a raised garden bed, it’s still the perfect

infrastructure for growing food. For us, it also gives us the chance to reminisce about the good ol’ days. Before starting the construction, it is important to make the site for your garden bed completely LEVEL. Use a rake to make a flat pad. This will make the entire process sooooo much easier. Make sure you spend a bit of time getting this part right, removing any weeds and grasses in the process. Start measuring and marking up the timbers. We like to organise an OLD-FASHIONED production line set-up – economies of scale and scope we say! – and measure and make the timbers first. Measure the lengths twice and cut once. Cut your timbers. For the bed we want to build, we need six 2.4 m (7 ft 101/2 in) lengths, six 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) widths and ten 600 mm (1 ft 111/2 in) uprights/braces. When cutting, it helps not to force the circular saw through too quickly. Give it time to cut and let it go at its own speed. You will get STRAIGHTER CUTS and everything will slot together more nicely. That will give us more reasons to celebrate with CUPS OF TEA. Start by affixing the two lengths of the garden bed in slabs of three 2.4 m (7 ft 101/2 in) lengths, braced together by three 600 mm (1 ft 111/2 in) uprights. Lie lengths down with an end brace underneath. The end brace should extend beyond the lengths by the exact thickness of the timber (38 mm/11/2 in). Size up using another timber length. It will make sense later. As well as the two end uprights that are overhanging the thickness of the timber, attach a centre upright for extra rigidity.
Now it’s time to begin construction. Start by taking an entire length slab and nestle it into position. Use the spirit level to make sure it is completely level horizontally and vertically, and affix one 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) width piece at ground level to hold it in place. Build it up with two more pieces and you have half the unit complete. If we were cutting with robot precision and using timber of the exact same grade and thickness, adding the remaining pieces would result in a perfect fit first time, but this is WOODWORK, and we consider ourselves IMPERFECT. Because it’s very difficult to achieve perfection first time round, you may need to TEST-BUILD before screwing in. You can then chock the bottom one up or slightly dig it in to make it fit. Once happy, screw together using two 70 mm (23/4 in) bulge head screws for each piece of timber. Next comes the opposing side. Muscle it into position and attach it, ensuring it is level all over. TEA TIME perhaps? Nope, attach the remaining widths first and then put on a brew. The remaining uprights help to cover any blemishes or fixes that you’ve made along the way. Attach them at the four corners of the bed. To hold these uprights in place, use a couple of 70 mm (23/4in) bulge head screws from the inside of the bed. That way your bed exterior will be screw-free, and you’ll have a PERFECTLY CRAFTED raised garden bed (with all blemishes classily hidden).
Now your bed is ready to be filled up and planted out. Ahh, the MEMORIES …

HOME AND GARDEN Soil beds can be very time consuming to maintain and need weeding on a regular basis. It is therefore best to take action to prevent weed growth. 1) In Ornamental areas wood-chip or bark mulch is very useful. This needs to be 5-10cms thick and will need replacing seasonally. It is best NOT to use a membrane under the mulch as this prevents it decomposing and enriching the soil. 2) In the less ornamental areas (vegetable gardens) a weed suppressant membrane can be used with the planting done through it. If spread between rows it can help avoid muddy feet. 3) A gravel surface can be spread over a weed membrane. This can look attractive all year round and helps to keep clean feet when maintaining border plants.
MAKE LIFE A LITTLE EASIER! Create a garden that is low in maintenance yet stunningly beautiful and useful for all your needs ...
TOM ATHERTON (now in his mid-seventies and still an enthusiastic and active gardener), passes on some useful tips to make life easier in the garden. No garden is completely maintenance free—even with paving and plastic plants it would still need sweeping and dusting! However, with careful thought and clever design, a low maintenance garden can be created. TOMS TIPS... Lawns are one of the biggest maintenance areas in a garden. How often do we hear the phrase “You’ll have to cut that lawn before we go on holiday!”? However, there are several ways to ease the workload.
difficult to tell the difference between real and artificial. Whilst the initial cost of installation is more expensive than laying a grass lawn, this can be offset by the reduced maintenance costs.
Perimeter Fences need constant maintenance. In order to reduce this there are various alternatives. 1) Hedges need less maintenance than wooden fences if there is sufficient space. In the case of a wide border, flag stepping stones are useful in front of the hedge. There is a wide variety of hedging plants that can look good all year round. 2) Steel fences are now becoming more available in a range of colours and need very little maintenance.
1) Install a flat edging as a mowing strip—this reduces the need to constantly trim the edge with every mowing. It can also act as a separator from other areas. 2) Create a perimeter pathway. This can reduce the size of the lawn by up to 50% and cuts down on mowing time and other lawn maintenance. This gives an all weather surface for maintaining flower beds and accessing other features. 3) Consider the installation of artificial grass. This creates an all season, immaculate surface that needs very little maintenance. There is a range of styles, some of which make it visually
Sleepers are ideal for creating beds as they are heavy enough to be selfsupporting without foundations or stays. They are also useful seats.

HOME AND GARDEN 3) Plastic coated wire mesh fences do not need maintenance BUT neither do they give privacy. 4) Wooden panels with concrete posts and bases need to be constructed so that they are easily removable for dip treating or spraying. Any planting should take this into consideration. Raised Beds are easier to tend and avoid the necessity to kneel or bend. 1) A flat edge coping on top of a raised bed wall creates a useful seat. 2) Beds should be narrow (no deeper than an arms length) to avoid over-stretching. 3) Sleepers are ideal for creating beds as they are heavy enough to be self-supporting without foundations or stays. They are also useful seats. Concrete fence panels & posts: The concrete panels usually seen at the base of a fence make ideal raised beds. Normal fence posts are too long but can be cut into shorter sections by the use of a grinder or stihl saw. If the posts are concreted in, a very robust bed can be created. Some concrete panels are made to imitate wood sleepers and can look quite effective!
Raised Beds are easier to tend and avoid the necessity to kneel or bend.
Tubs, if large enough can be used as raised beds—smaller ones can be used for seasonal planting to maintain colour all year round. Planting should be carefully considered with a view to future maintenance avoiding quick growing specimens that need constant trimming. The tips here are some of the main considerations to make things easier. There are many other items making up a low maintenance garden design. Many of them are small but helpful. Many gardens are personally constructed by the owners but it can be very cost-effective to have professional involvement.
Whatever your decision - Good luck with your garden.

Keeping fit as you age It’s no secret that keeping fit is important at any age – both for your physical and mental well-being. However, as we are all aware, it becomes even more crucial as we enter our mature years so that we can continue to lead full, enjoyable and independent lives. There are several ways in which exercise can directly impact on your quality of life. Most obviously it improves our health through strengthening our immune systems, but it’s also proven to release endorphins which help to regulate our mood. It’s the reason behind that post-workout ‘high’ that all gym bunnies talk about. Secondly regular exercise can lead to weight loss and muscle toning, meaning an improvement in our appearance which boosts self-esteem. Lastly, but equally as important, exercise usually means getting out of the house and interacting with other people, so it’s a healthy antidote to loneliness. If you don’t have a gym membership, how else can you keep fit?
Housework It may sound old-fashioned, but doing the housework is an easy (and not to mention useful!) way to keep fit. Whether you’re more a fan of hoovering, dusting or hanging out the laundry, all will burn calories and help you to keep in shape. Dog walking If you don’t own a dog, don’t stop reading! Make the initial effort to take your dog for regular walks and then pretty soon you’ll find they’ll be the one reminding you. Generally speaking – the bigger the dog, the longer the walk – so consider this if you’re thinking about becoming a dog owner. Alternatively there are online schemes which allow dog lovers to borrow other people’s dogs for walking. Swimming Easy on your joints and an entertaining way to exercise, swimming has seen a resurgence in recent years with the arrival of outdoor lidos up and down the country. The local leisure centre is just as good though! Swimming is great for all

Fast forwarding to the present day, Dawn has now lost a staggering 5 STONE, 50 INCHES and reduced her body fat from a dangerous 49.8 to a healthier 39.6 after following our advice and unique 30 minute programmes, just 3 times a week.. over body conditioning but unlike most sports, it’s low impact and therefore an ideal alternative for anyone experiencing issues with joints. Hiking Hiking is great for both cardiovascular and muscular development. Popular walking spots will have planned routes which vary in length and intensity, so there’s little planning to be done aside from getting there. Hiking is also a great excuse to get friends together, even making a holiday out of it. The Lake District is the best known hiking destination but there are scenic hiking routes all around the UK. This is just a flavour of ways to keep fit – whether free or requiring some money, the most important thing is that you find an activity which you enjoy and get to meet like-minded people through.

Dementia is on the Rise so Make Your Lasting Power of Attorney Figures released by the Office of National Statistics have revealed that dementia, including Alzheimer’s, has overtaken heart disease as the leading cause of death in England and Wales. More than 61,000 people were victims of dementia in 2015, equating to 11.6% of all deaths registered. Women who died of the condition accounted for twice as many as men - 41,283 as opposed to 20,403. According to Alzheimer’s Society, there are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. Around 225,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year; roughly one person every three minutes. Although age is the most obvious contributing factor, around one in 20 people (over 40,000) living with dementia are under the age of 65. One in six over the age of 80 have the condition and 70% of those in care homes suffer from dementia or severe memory problems.
a progressive condition which means that over time the structure and chemistry of the brain becomes increasingly damaged, leaving a person with a declining ability to remember or understand and communicate. The rate at which it affects people depends very much on the individual; physical make-up, emotional resilience and the level of support available all play a part. At around 500,000, there are more women than men in the UK living with dementia. Although it’s not certain why this is the case, the view is that it’s because more women are living into their 80s - in fact, nearly three in four people aged over 90 are women. Worryingly, Alzheimer’s research has found that women over 60 are twice as likely to develop dementia as they are of getting breast cancer with the risk doubling every five years after the age of 65.
While most people think of dementia as a disease it’s actually an over-arching term used to describe the signs that appear when brain cells stop working properly. The symptoms include memory loss, confusion and disorientation, difficulty in communicating and changes in behaviour.
There are four main conditions that make up dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common. Vascular dementia occurs when blood flow to the brain becomes reduced, while Dementia with Lewy bodies occurs when tiny deposits of protein form in the brain’s nerve cells. Frontotemporal dementia, meanwhile, is caused by damage to cells in the frontal and temporal lobe areas of the brain which regulate personality, emotions, behaviour, reasoning, planning, decision-making and the understanding and production of language.
Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or a series of strokes. It’s
Although not exhaustive, signs affecting your daily life which could be the result of dementia are:

• If you struggle to remember recent events, although you can easily recall things that happened in the past • If you find it hard to follow conversations or programmes on TV • If you forget the names of friends or everyday objects • If you can’t recall things you’ve heard, seen or read • If you lose the thread of what you’re saying • if you have problems thinking and reasoning • If you feel anxious, depressed or angry • If you feel confused even when in a familiar environment or get lost on familiar journeys • If you find that other people start to notice or comment on your memory loss Being diagnosed with dementia ultimately means there will be issues with maintaining your independence and as your metal ability starts to fail, it’s important to know that there’s someone who will look after your interests when the time comes that you can’t do it yourself. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that gives someone nominated by you (your attorney) the authority to make decisions on your behalf. There are two types of LPAs. The first allows your attorney to handle your financial affairs, such as any property and savings you may have. The second addresses your personal welfare, such as the medical treatment you should receive or where you live, for example. You’re not obliged to take out both LPAs but if you do, you can have the same attorney for both or they can be different if you prefer. Don’t worry about giving up control of your finances or treatment suddenly, you can choose when your Lasting Power of Attorney becomes effective. Although an LPA is a legal document, what it really gives you is peace of mind. No one wants to think that they may develop life limiting conditions, but the reality is that dementia can affect any of us at any time in later life, so it’s reassuring to know that if you’re unable to make a decision yourself, they’ll be someone who can. Because you’ll have chosen your attorney, you’ll know they will have your best interests at heart and will make decisions based on what you want, rather than leaving it to a stranger or someone you don’t trust. An LPA also prevents family or friends having to apply for similar powers in the future, which can be an expensive and time-consuming business. The key to remember is that you can only set up an LPA while you’re well because the law won’t recognise it as a legally binding document once you’ve lost capacity. If you’re interested in drafting your LPA, Russell and Russell offers a free no obligation consultation to guide you through the regulations and to discuss what’s right for your circumstances. www.russellrussell.co.uk

BILL GRANGER SHARES
BILL'S EVERYDAY ASIAN Thai fishcakes Fishcakes are a perennial favourite and this version is a great crowd-pleaser. Shallowfried in just a little oil, I guarantee the ones you make at home will not only taste better but will be healthier than anything you eat in a restaurant.
Makes 24
ingredients 500g boneless, skinless, fleshy white fish, roughly chopped 3 tablespoons red curry paste 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 2 tablespoons fish sauce 6 kaffir lime leaves, very finely sliced, or finely grated zest of 2 limes 60g snake beans or green beans, very thinly sliced 80ml light-flavoured oil cucumber relish (see recipe below)
Cucumber relish 125ml rice vinegar or white vinegar 125g caster sugar 1 small cucumber, quartered lengthways and finely sliced 1/2 tablespoon finely julienned ginger 1 large red chilli, de-seeded and finely sliced Place the vinegar and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat and cool. Pour into a bowl, add the cucumber, ginger and chilli and stir to combine.
MEDTHOD Blend the fish in a food processor until smooth, scraping the sides down once or twice. Add the curry paste and pulse with the sugar, fish sauce and lime leaves. Scrape into a large bowl, add the snake beans and stir to combine. Take a handful of the mixture and throw against the side of the bowl to firm the proteins, repeating a few times until the mixture is noticeably firmer.
48 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
With moistened hands, form slightly heaped tablespoonfuls of the mixture into discs. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat and fry in batches until browned and cooked through. Drain on kitchen paper and serve hot with the cucumber relish.
Butternut squash & coconut soup I had an unfortunate incident once with an enormous pumpkin we’d had on display at one of the restaurants and then put out the back and forgotten about. I won’t put you off by going into any more detail, but I wish I’d had this recipe at the time as, instead of wasting the pumpkin, I could have made a freezerful of this smooth, creamy soup.
SERVES 4
ingredients 2 tablespoons light-flavoured oil 3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 1 red chilli, chopped 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon paprika 1kg butternut squash, peeled, de-seeded and chopped
MEDTHOD 2 carrots, roughly chopped 200ml coconut milk 3 tablespoons fish sauce 2 tablespoons lime juice, to taste extra coconut milk, to drizzle 1 red chilli, finely sliced on an angle 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
Heat the oil in a medium-sized saucepan. Add the garlic and spices and cook over medium heat for 1 minute until fragrant. Add the butternut squash and carrot and cook, stirring, over medium heat for a further minute. Add 1.5 litres water and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 25–30 minutes or until the vegetables are soft. Cool slightly and purée until smooth. Add the coconut milk, fish sauce and lime juice and season with sea salt to taste. Ladle into four serving bowls, drizzle with the extra coconut milk and dress with the chilli and coriander leaves.
Rather than use the garlic and dried spices you could also try making this with a heaped tablespoon of red curry paste.

Massaman lamb curry The more serious foodies among us can be sticklers for staying true to a cuisine, but cultures have been crossing over and fusing flavours since the beginning of time. The name of this curry means ‘Muslim’, as the Thais used Muslim traders’ spices to add depth and enrich its flavour.
SERVES 4
ingredients
MEDTHOD
3 teaspoons dried chilli flakes 1 tablespoon ground ginger 2 teaspoons cumin seeds 1 teaspoon white peppercorns 5 cardamom pods, cracked open and seeds removed (about 1/4 teaspoon) 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 red onion, roughly chopped 6 garlic cloves, crushed with the flat of a knife 1 lemon grass stalk, white part only, roughly chopped 2 tablespoons chopped coriander roots 3 tablespoons light-flavoured oil 4 French-trimmed lamb shanks (about 1.3kg) 400ml tin coconut milk 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 tablespoon fish sauce 400g new potatoes, halved 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 tablespoons chopped roasted peanuts large handful coriander leaves
Preheat the oven to 160o/gas mark 2–3. Use a mortar and pestle to roughly pound the chilli flakes, ground ginger, cumin seeds, peppercorns, cardamom and sea salt. Blend the onion, garlic, lemon grass, coriander roots and 1 tablespoon of the oil in a blender as finely as possible, then stir in the spice mix. Alternatively, combine all the spices together in the blender.
50 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Heat the remaining oil in a large flameproof casserole dish over medium–high heat. Add the lamb shanks and brown for 2 minutes on each side or until lightly browned all over. Remove from the dish. Add the curry paste mix and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes or until fragrant. Return the lamb to the dish, add the coconut milk, 400ml water, sugar and fish sauce and bring to the boil. Remove the dish from the heat. Add the potatoes and bake for 13/4–2 hours, turning the lamb 2–3 times while cooking, or until the meat is tender and falling off the bone and the sauce has reduced. Skim any fat off the surface and discard. Stir in the lime juice and scatter with peanuts. Serve with coriander leaves and steamed rice.
perfect rice Rule one for anyone venturing into Asian cooking for the first time is not to be afraid of making perfect, fluffy rice. I used to think rice cookers were the foot spas of the kitchen in Asia and Australia until I discovered that they are actually very handy. Until I get around to buying one, however, here are three foolproof methods of getting rice right every time.

Steamed rice
Brown rice
Coconut rice
400g long-grain white or jasmine rice 600ml water
400g long-grain brown or basmati rice 1 litre water
Rinse the rice in a fine sieve, preferably until the water runs clear, and drain well. Put the rice and water in a large saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Bring to the boil, put the lid on the pan, reduce the heat to low and cook for 12 minutes. Turn the heat off and leave to stand for 10 minutes. Do not remove the lid at any time during the cooking and standing process. Serve immediately.

TOM KITCHIN - "KITCHIN SUPPERS" This is one of my favourite Sunday roasts. You can’t get much more British than a leg of lamb, but serving it in this way gives a certain Mediterranean feel and flavour, which makes the dish seem light and fresh. Infusing the lamb with flavourings like rosemary and fennel seeds makes it deliciously tasty. Most side dishes work with lamb, so choose your vegetables according to the season. You might also like to serve new potatoes alongside here, or a potato gratin.
ROASTED LEG OF LAMB WITH RATATOUILLE-STUFFED TOMATOES SERVES 4 1.2kg boned and rolled leg of lamb 5 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped handful of rosemary sprigs, leaves only, roughly chopped 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon fennel seeds sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 250ml lamb stock or chicken stock 50g butter STUFFED TOMATOES 4 large tomatoes on the vine olive oil for cooking 1 onion, peeled and diced 3 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 1 tablespoon dried herbs de Provence 1 courgette, diced 1 aubergine, diced 1 red pepper, cored, deseeded and diced
Place the lamb on a board. In a bowl, mix together the garlic, rosemary, cumin and fennel seeds. Using a sharp knife, pierce little slits all over the surface of the lamb. Using your fingers, push the rosemary and spice mixture into the cuts. Season the meat with salt and pepper. Put to one side. To prepare the tomatoes, snip them off the vine, but leave the stalks intact. Cut a slice off the top off the tomatoes, removing about a quarter, and reserve these lids. Using a teaspoon, carefully scoop out the juice and seeds from inside, leaving the shells intact; set aside, along with the tops. For the ratatouille stuffing, heat a heavy-based saucepan over a medium heat and add a little olive oil. Add the onion and cook slowly for 3–4 minutes. Stir in the garlic and dried herbs. Now turn up the heat and add the courgette, aubergine and some salt and pepper. Cook, stirring often, for a further 3–4 minutes; you may need to add more olive oil as the aubergine
will absorb quite a lot. Add the red pepper and cook for a further 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Check the seasoning and take off the heat. To cook the lamb, heat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Heat a heavy-based ovenproof pan over a medium-high heat and add a little olive oil. Add the lamb joint and colour on all sides, allowing 3–4 minutes. Transfer to the oven and roast for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, fill the tomatoes with the ratatouille and put the lids back on. Stand the stuffed tomatoes in a small roasting tray. Add the stock, butter and a drizzle of olive oil to the tray. When the meat has been roasting for 15 minutes, turn the setting down to 160°C/Gas 3 and put the stuffed tomatoes into the oven. Roast the meat for a further 20 minutes, along with the tomatoes, basting these with the pan juices from time to time. Rest the lamb in a warm place for 10 minutes. Slice the meat and serve with the stuffed tomatoes, spooning over all the pan juices.

1 leek, trimmed, washed and cut into strips 400g baby spinach 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 400g smoked salmon 300g Cheddar, grated 8–10 lasagne sheets 4 dill sprigs, roughly chopped, to garnish
Heat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4. To make the béchamel sauce, melt the butter in a heavy-based saucepan, stir in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes. Slowly stir in the milk and cook at a gentle simmer, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. For the lasagne, melt half the butter in a heavy-based pan over a medium-low heat. Add the leek strips, season with salt and pepper and sweat gently for 2–3 minutes. Add the spinach leaves, a handful at a time, along with the garlic and cook for another minute or two. Drain off the excess liquid. Use the rest of the butter to grease a large square or rectangular ovenproof dish. Cut the smoked salmon into small pieces, roughly 2cm square. Spoon a layer of the béchamel sauce over the bottom of the dish and layer a third of the lasagne sheets on top. Spoon half of the leek and spinach mixture over the lasagne, followed by a good third of the smoked salmon, then cover with a third of the remaining béchamel and sprinkle some cheese over the surface. Repeat the layers of lasagne, leek and spinach, smoked salmon, béchamel and cheese, then cover with a top layer of lasagne. Spoon the rest of the béchamel sauce on top and scatter over the remaining smoked salmon and grated cheese. Bake for about 45 minutes until the top is a deep golden colour. To check that the lasagne is cooked, insert a knife in the middle; it should meet with minimal resistance. Scatter the chopped dill on top of the lasagne and serve, with a crisp green salad on the side.

MUSHROOM BRIOCHES The idea for this savoury brioche came from one of the legendary chefs I once worked for in Paris, Guy Savoy. I love its earthy mushroom flavour, especially with pâté or alongside a soup. Served slightly warm or toasted, it is just heavenly.
Makes 10–12 mini brioches 180ml lukewarm milk 1½ sachets active dried yeast (10g) 4 free-range medium eggs 560g plain flour 15g salt 50g sugar 340g unsalted butter, softened Mushroom duxelle 400g button mushrooms, cleaned 20g butter 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallot 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 1 teaspoon dried herbes de Provence sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Eggwash 2 egg yolks beaten with 1 teaspoon water and a pinch of salt
Pour the milk into a jug, sprinkle on the dried yeast and leave for 10–15 minutes, until the yeast is fully dissolved and the liquid begins to froth. Add the eggs to the yeast liquid, beating lightly to break them down. Combine the flour, salt and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook and mix briefly. Now, with the motor running, slowly pour in the yeast, milk and egg mix. Continue to work on a medium speed for 5–7 minutes. Once the dough appears smooth and elastic, begin adding the butter, little by little, until it is all incorporated. Continue mixing for a further 5 minutes. When ready, the dough should appear very smooth and shiny. Turn the dough out into a lightly oiled large bowl. Cover with lightly oiled cling film and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size; this should take about an hour. In the meantime, prepare the mushroom duxelle. Chop the mushrooms into small dices. Heat a heavy-based pan over a medium-low heat. Add the butter and, once melted and foaming, add the mushrooms, shallot, garlic, dried herbs and some seasoning. Cook for 3–4 minutes to soften and release

all the liquid from the mushrooms. Then increase the heat to drive off the liquid; the pan should be quite dry. Set aside to cool. Lightly grease and flour 10–12 metal rings, 7.5cm in diameter, and stand on a baking sheet. Turn the risen dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly. Divide the dough in half. Roll each half into a rectangle, about 40 x 20cm and 1cm thick. Spread the mushroom duxelle on top of the two sheets of dough, leaving a 1cm margin along the edges. Starting at a long edge, roll each rectangle of dough up like a Swiss roll, finishing with the seam underneath. Cut into 7.5cm lengths and place in the prepared rings. Cover with lightly oiled cling film and allow to prove until they have almost reached the top of the rings. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Brush the brioches with eggwash and bake for 15 minutes until deep golden. Leave in the tins for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. Serve while still slightly warm.

Law For Landlords Returning Your Property Without The Headache
Landlords urged to take swift action in dealing with disputes with problem tenants. tenancy agreement have been breached, such as non-payment of rent. However, Landlords must be careful to comply with their obligations otherwise a claim for possession could fail.
The law governing Landlord and Tenant relationships is technical and complicated. Often, the small print can easily be missed which can cause problems in the future. When it comes to Residential property situations, Landlords are within their rights to regain possession of their property when a tenancy agreement comes to an end or if certain terms of the
62 | WWW.50PLUSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Landlords should be particularly careful to ensure they have properly registered any deposits and provided the required prescribed information at the outset of tenancies. Other issues such as ensuring that no disrepair claims have been ignored and that correct notices requiring possession are being used are equally important. Landlords who do not follow the law during evictions, can have their cases thrown out of Court. As far as Commercial Landlords are concerned, they must always ensure that they carefully check the
terms of their lease before deciding on what course of action to take. For example, if a commercial Landlord wishes to exercise a right of re-entry and forfeit a lease, the right must exist in the lease and the Landlord must not take any steps which may waive the right to forfeit. It is particularly important for Landlords to follow the correct process, especially if the building is of mixed commercial and residential use. Specific legal advice should always be taken before exercising a forfeiture clause. Stephen McArdle, Associate Solicitor at KBL says “We understand how frustrating it can be to have a problem tenant; both in a residential and commercial context. We have many years’ experience and a successful track record of advising Landlords in situations such as recovery of
rent arrears, possession claims and eviction, forfeiture and guarantee claims. It’s advantageous to take action immediately to avoid delay and imperative that the correct procedure is followed. We offer court representation, quick turnarounds and a solicitor led team.” How much will it cost to obtain possession of my property? To commence a court claim for possession of your residential property from a tenant, we operate a fixed fee service for un-defended / non-disputed claims. We are always happy to have a no-obligation chat at the outset to discuss your case. What preliminary issues should a Landlord be aware of? Landlords always need to ensure that any rent deposits have been properly registered with an authorised scheme within 30 days of it being take and that prescribed information was also give within the same time frame. Similarly, Landlords should also consider whether there have been any complaints by the tenant about the condition of the property and, if so, whether or not the landlord had responded to those complaints. Landlords should also ensure that up to date gas safety certificates are in place. What happens if my tenant refuses to leave? Before Court proceedings begin, a valid notice requiring possession will need to be served on the tenant. There are several different types of notice dependant on which possession route you are taking; s.21 notices generally give a longer notice period than s.8 notices. If the tenant refuses to vacate the property after the notice has been given, you will have to issue possession proceedings at court to seek an order for possession. This process begins with the commencement of court proceedings and then requesting the Court makes a possession Order.
How long will the tenant be given to vacate by the court? Usually within 14 days of the date of the Possession Order. Although in cases of exceptional hardship, a court may afford the tenant up to 42 days. How long will the process take? No two cases are identical. The process of obtaining possession will depend on a number of issues. Firstly, the type of procedure used (e.g. s.21 or s.8); secondly, whether the tenant leaves voluntarily; and thirdly, how quickly the court processes the claim. Most of these factors will not be within our control. However, we aim to issue proceedings promptly so as to minimise any delay. In s.21 claims, after the appropriate notice has expired, the period from the point of issuing the claim to the date of the Possession Order will approximately be 6 to 8 weeks. In s.8 claims the period from the point of issuing the claim to the date of the Possession Order is approximately 8-10 weeks. However, if the tenant fails to vacate and a court bailiff needs to be appointed, the process of actually obtaining possession will take longer. Will I have to attend court? We will represent you at court. However for s.8 claims, the landlord should attend if possible. The hospice provides a range of services for people with cancer, heart disease, neurological disease and other life-limiting illnesses, in the hospice and in patients own homes. Care is provided through outpatient clinics, an 18-bed inpatient unit, day therapy, the Hospice at Home service, complementary therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work, bereavement support, creative therapy, a hair & image service and chaplaincy. The hospice also provide 24 hour telephone advice both for carers and other healthcare professionals and a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service. All of the services are provided free of charge, but as a local charity the hospice needs to raise around ÂŁ3.2 million a year to fund their wide range of care and support services
Bolton Hospice is calling for local people to help celebrate their birthday by choosing one of the 25 things on their birthday gift list! There’s so many ways you can help, including holding a bake sale, signing up to join the hospice lottery, taking part in Midnight Memories Walk or volunteering at the hospice.

Bolton lawyer takes on Everest base camp challenge A partner from one of Bolton’s biggest law firms is set to take on one of the most physical challenges in the world in a bid to raise money for a local charity. Judith Bromley, partner in charge of the wills and probate department at Russell and Russell Solicitors, is heading to Nepal to complete a trek to Everest base camp. On 14th April Judith, and her fellow fundraiser Gabrielle MacDonald, will fly to Nepal to prepare for the 12 day trek. Her mission is to raise funds to mark the 25th anniversary of Bolton Hospice, which has been providing free care for adults facing lifelimiting illnesses since it opened its doors in 1992. Starting from the southern side of Everest, Judith will put her 12 months of training into practice to take on the epic 17,600 ft hike. From Kathmandu, she will take a short plane ride to Lukla to begin a two day walk to the village of Namche Bazaar where she will begin her altitude acclimatisation. From there, she will trek for another two days to reach Dingboche, stopping to acclimatise again before making a further two day hike which will take her to Everest base camp. “I’ve walked for many years and have always enjoyed it, but

there’s something about pushing yourself that really appeals to me”, said Judith. “I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Bolton Hospice in 2015, which was such an amazing adventure it gave me an appetite to look for other challenges to help raise money. The walk to Everest base camp is going to be an experience of a lifetime and to be able to do it whilst raising funds for the Hospice is a fantastic opportunity.” Anyone wishing to contribute towards Judith’s quest can make a donation via her just giving page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ judith-bromley1.

Bolton Denture Centre
Are your Dentures causing you teething troubles? Many denture wearers suffer with poor fitting, worn out or artificial (false) looking dentures that cause the wearer to feel a lack of confidence in their dentures. This can present itself when chewing or even by just worrying about the denture dropping during a conversation. All these are issues that Bolton Denture Centre specialise in correcting. Bolton Denture Centre are the number one denture clinic in Bolton. Solely focusing on providing the highest quality dentures with the only qualified Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) in Bolton. Over recent years there have been many improvements in both the way we construct dentures and in the materials and denture teeth that we use. This means that the end result looks more natural than ever before. Why not call for a FREE Consultation to find out more about these new innovations in denture design and manufacture?
Dentures Need Regular Servicing Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are also in a pretty hostile environment in the mouth, being attacked by strong acid, bacteria, hot, cold and spicy food. Denture material absorbs liquids and food odour. Daily cleaning is essential as well as professional ultrasonic cleaning in a dental laboratory at least once a year. Due to constant bone resorbtion dentures will become loose sooner or later. Loose dentures will increase damage to the gums and bone structure, and increase the risk of breakage. Have them

re-lined as soon as possible to get a good fit. It only takes a day or two. Have your dentures inspected by a Clinical Dental Technician at least every two years, or more frequently if necessary.
Your Dentures need Attention 1. When they become loose. 2. When teeth or denture base discolours. 3. When tooth surfaces become flat. 4. When denture base does not fit around natural teeth (in partial dentures). 5. When you develop deep lines around your mouth. 6. When your chin sticks out, and the corners of your lips are constantly wet, developing sores. 7. When you stop smiling and feel embarrassed.
My Dentures have become loose! This is easily remedied by a procedure know as Re-lining. A new layer of Denture base is added to your existing Denture, improving the fit and restoring confidence.
Dentures on Implants
This type of Denture is constructed in conjunction with the Dental Implant Surgeon. This is a very good procedure when the patient has limited control and retention of their Dentures. The finished Dentures ‘click’ into position offering the ultimate in Denture Retention.
Should I have a spare set of Dentures made? Yes, it is very important to have a spare set of dentures for emergencies in case of breakage.
Constructing a Good Set of Dentures Constructing a functional and aesthetically pleasing set of dentures is the most difficult task in dentistry. We are not only replacing lost teeth, but also lost tissue matter and bone. In other words, we have to re-create your facial features as they were before the loss of your natural teeth. In most cases we do not know what your teeth looked like, what size they were or what position they were in originally. We have a few indications but mostly we have to rely on our visual and artistic judgement. At the same time we have to use our technical expertise in order to make the
denture stable and functional. Denture construction is more art than science.
What is a Clinical Dental Technician? A Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) is a qualified dental technician that has under gone further Education and Training in areas such as Medical Emergencies Cross Infection Control and Oral Pathology (cancers and anomalies) to name just a few sections that make up the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology as Awarded by the Royal Collage of Surgeons (RCS). It is this qualification that allows the clinicians at Bolton Denture Centure to be able to be registered and regulated
with the General Dental Council (the official body for protecting the public with regards to dentistry) and carry indemnity insurance. It is this qualification, which means that only Dentists and Clinical Dental Technicians are the only Dental Professionals permitted to supply dentures direst to the public. A dental technician is not qualified to supply a denture directly to the public. However, despite this being an act of Mal practice many technicians will still practice illegally without informing the patient that they are not qualified. If you are unsure if your denture provider is qualified; ask them for their GDC registration number, then contact the GDC to see if they are registered not just as a dental technician but as a CDT.
DID YOU KNOW?
It is illegal for anyone who is not a GDC registered Dentist or Clinical Dental Technician to make a dental appliance directly to the public. This includes dentures or tooth whitening. Anyone providing these services should be reported to the General Dental Council or Trading Standards as they are practicing dentistry without the appropriate qualifications or indemnity insurance.

CARE
Bolton Dementia Support Can you spare a couple of hours to help make a difference to the lives of others? Bolton Dementia Support relies on the contribution made by its fantastic volunteers without whom we could not manage to support the 150 -200 people that use our service each week. Volunteering can have a tremendously positive effect to both the volunteer and to the community. People often approach us when they are at a low ebb themselves and need an aim in life particularly if they have retired or lost a job.
to make a difference. For me it was a two-way process, my contribution was greatly appreciated and I totally enjoyed the whole experience so all parties benefited”. Volunteering and helping others can help you reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. As little as two hours a week can make a huge difference. Volunteering with Bolton Dementia Support is FUN! Having a good sense of humour makes a world of difference. Picture shows volunteers from the Charity shop having fun at the Mayors Fair. We provide three Memory Cafes each week, these are “popup” venues where we serve refreshments to people living with dementia and those who care for them. A Memory Cafe offers a friendly relaxed and welcoming setting where anyone affected by dementia can come along and meet others in a similar situation, find out how and where to get help and share experiences and coping strategies.
The benefits of volunteering are enormous. The right match can help you to reduce stress, find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. One volunteer stated, “Volunteering gave me an enormous sense of job satisfaction and achievement. Also an awareness that you don’t need to be someone in power
There is usually entertainment on at the Cafes and the emphasis is on having an enjoyable experience. Volunteers are always needed to meet and greet people and to introduce new members to others. We often have a variety of games for people to take part in and volunteers can assist people with dementia to take an active role and maybe win a prize! One of the most important roles a volunteer can fill is to take time to sit and talk to people and be an active listener. We can provide training in any aspect of volunteering and dementia awareness that a volunteer may need and they can be assured of support and supervision from trained personnel.

Four or five times a year we organise outings to the coast or to the theatre and again volunteers are needed to help to supervise people on the outings. All out of pocket expenses are met by the Group.
We have a variety of services: Three Memory Cafes each week in Bolton town centre, Horwich RMI club and Astley Bridge bowling club. Volunteers are needed to help with refreshments, assist with games and to sit and chat to people attending. We also need someone to help organise the Monday session in the town centre. We have a charity shop on Bury road and volunteers help to sell in the shop and to sort donations. We also offer a pick up service for donations and need someone to help with this. We have the Candle Cafe in Little Lever where we sell refreshments and meals to the public, volunteers are also needed to wait on the tables. We are now opening a Drop In Centre for carers in the same building as the Candle Cafe and need volunteers to meet and greet people attending the Centre and to help find out information for them or direct them to further sources of support. This service will run 5 days a week from 2 – 4pm and operate an appointment scheme on Saturdays. One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact it has on the lives of others. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people who are living with dementia and those who care for them. Volunteering is a two-way street it benefits you and the people you are helping. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills. And have FUN!
