Who can forget England footballer Chloe Kelly’s wonderful sprint around the pitch, ecstatically waving her national shirt around her head, after scoring the winning goal in the Euros?

Many of our top – let’s face it, pampered - athletes in all sports have very different lives. They are buoyed up by huge prize and appearance money and have supported lifestyles alongside their, no doubt much-deserved, success.

TWITTERING ON

It’s no surprise then that, while they may celebrate with teammates on the football field or in the Formula 1 pits, there are certain given expectations about how well they will always do.

Amateur, minority or just less well-covered sports can be a lonely place even for the most dedicated and optimistic of individuals. You don’t often see Premier League footballers in tears after a really important match. So to witness a young weightlifter’s emotions after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games or a track athlete almost unable to speak after gaining top honours is a reminder of what sport is really all about.

Always be fit to fly THE realisation that some airlines rely on medically-trained passengers to help in emergencies is rather worrying.

One problem, though, is that the tools they need are often missing and onboard medical equipment appears to vary. While cabin crews are trained in first aid, whose responsibility is it should a poorly person die on board after a medic has intervened?

WE’VE got very used to our top, often fame-weary sportspeople doing post-event TV interviews being very composed and predictable about their successes. However, it’s taken the Commonwealth Games and the Euro 2022 women’s football tournament this Summer to remind us all just what top achievement really means after those many years of Thetraining.individuals in cycling, swimming, athletics and every other fascinating discipline in the Games dedicate their lives to their sport. They give up so much to follow a dream, curtailing family life and social fun for the necessary daily discipline.

The worrying news is that medical emergencies in the air are not uncommon with around one in every 600 flights. As, for example, 1,300 flights take off and land daily at Heathrow Airport alone that’s a lot of medical emergencies.

This was only partly eclipsed by the immediate post-match telly interview when a super excited Chloe so wanted to celebrate the win with her team-mates and the crowd that she cut short the interview, flinging the microphone to the ground.

No-one could fail to be infected by that fabulously natural and overwhelming emotion. The girl was so excited! Those sort of moments, especially part-way through an athlete’s journey, make us emotional, too. And they help us to understand just what sacrifices have been made by them as well as their family and partners.

Most of us tend to assume that a crew member with some form of relevant training would always take over but a poll of medics carried out by the Medical Defence Union revealed that nine out of 10 doctors questioned had been called to help an emergency on a Smallplane.wonder, in these litigious times, that they are increasingly reticent to come forward when help is needed - in spite of internationally recognized “Good Samaritan laws” which should shield anyone from negligence claims if they try to help.

Sporting emotion reminds us what it’s all about

Flick to the other side of the coin and how many muddy playing fields, deserted tracks or half-empty local stadia are experienced by those still striving for top honours?

So, as a lover of sport, I’d just like to say “thank you” to all those in this year’s Commonwealth Games and especially to the Lionesses. You’ve renewed an interest in watching and taking part in sport which even age cannot dim.

All British airlines’ crew have are required to stock a medical kit with supplies set out by the European Union Aviation Safety ThisAgency.involves 60 different items including a blood-pressure monitor and IV fluids to treat dehydration along with certain medicines including antibiotics for infections and adrenaline for allergic reactions. Apparently, though, some vital equipment can be missing.

Realistically, passengers need to be pro-active when planning to fly and not ignore health warning signs that could become a medical emergency mid-air. This includes anyone who has had a stroke or heart attack in the previous two months and women more than 36 weeks pregnant or 32 weeks with multiple pregnancies. Plainly, commonsense is needed here because we have to accept that getting on a plane and being in the middle of the sky for however many hours is just not the same as being within relatively easy reach of suitable medical help should we need it.

Princess Diana’s real legacy – her sons TWENTY five years after her death Princess Diana is still influential in the modern monarchy. There are many who say that future king Prince William’s warmth and humanity come directly from her. It certainly seems the normality of the parenting of his three children and family life with wife Kate owes much to Diana’s attempts to give her own royal family as down-to-earth an upbringing as possible. According to a new book by former royal bodyguard Ken Wharfe, Diana incurred the wrath of her husband and other royal relatives by her determination to provide a grounded family life. Not only did she do ordinary things like taking them to school but she wanted her children to speak to the many palace servants and to mix with everyone – much to the dismay of Prince Charles and others. She also wanted to take her sons to the cinema, for a ride on the Underground and on a bus and wasn’t averse to slipping away from palace duties to freedom. Just going to Marks & Spencer to buy sausages for tea provided a fun experience for the young Muchprinces.has been written and revealed about Princess Diana’s life as a royal but, as Diana the mother, her story and influence comfortably continues with the next generation.

There are mountains, lakes, rivers, icefields, canyons, and there are activities to be enjoyed at every turn – hiking, biking, river rafting, glacier walking and even some airborne adventures. It’s my kind of place. But as a solo traveller it’s nice to share these experiences with fellow travellers, a group you can rely on to encourage you along, overcome any nerves you may have, and of course, to take your picture in some iconic settings! That’s just what I found when I travelled the Rocky Mountains with Just You. After arriving into Calgary we transferred to Banff National Park, and by the end of the 90 minute journey I already felt at ease thanks to our amazing tour leader, Lezli, who set the scene for the trip and made us all – each solo travellers in the same boat – feel completely relaxed about everything from rooming, to meal arrangements, but more importantly the amazing sights and scenes we were going to experience.

Travelling solo doesn’t limit the opportunity for activities and adventure, as Kerry Gallagher found out on a recent tour of the Rocky Mountains with solo travel specialist Just You.

Athabasca Glacier ADVENTURES APLENTY FOR SOLO TRAVELLERS

Our first stop in Banff was filled with one incredible moment after another. We visited the major lakes including Two Jack Lake and Lake Minnewanka, we stopped at Bow Falls and viewed the stunning castle-style Fairmont Banff Springs, and took a short hike up Hoodoos Viewpoint to see the unique rock formations backed by gorgeous scenery. It didn’t take long for the group to gel as we marvelled at the landscapes and sheet beauty of Banff. There are certain activities that bring a group together like no other. Like taking a gondola trip up to the top of Sulphur Mountain, the eight-minute journey suspended in the air is a conversation starter and not for the faint hearted, but the views are well worth it. Or getting kitted up in helmet and high vis jackets for an e-bike tour around the town, que some light-hearted comedy as we got to grips with electric cycling and controlling speeds! Before we left Banff we were in for, what I would consider, a pretty once-in-a-lifetime experience, and something as a solo traveller I probably wouldn’t have signed up for on my own – a helicopter flight over the Rocky Mountains. It was an unforgettable experience and all the better shared with others, the scenery was breathtaking and getting up close to some of the mountains was truly awe-inspiring – we could talk about nothing else over dinner that night!

Banff - Hoodoos Viewpoint

Our journey continued from Banff along the Icefields Parkway, a 227km stretch of road winding passed lakes, waterfalls and glaciers. Another benefit of travelling with a group is that you have more eyes to watch out for wildlife along the way –across our full journey we had seven bear sightings (black and grizzly), a moose, plenty of elk and bighorn sheep. Along this route we entered Jasper National Park, where our next adventure was glacier walking on Athabasca Glacier. It was another ‘pinch me moment’ as we stood on the glacier - 360 metres of compact snow built over thousands of years, deep enough to fit the Eiffel Tower. As we huddled in the cold for a group photo, our tour leader Lezli unexpectedly pulled out a bottle of maple flavoured whiskey to enjoy a toast and warm us up. It’s these extra little touches that make travelling with Just You really special. After a brief stop in Jasper, we moved onto perhaps one of the most beautiful settings we visited – Lake Louise. Walking out from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and gazing over the iconic lake scene ahead is magical. This is one photo you want to capture with you front and centre, glorious lake-scape behind, and by now, fellow travellers have become friends and are only too happy to oblige in taking the perfect picture as you pose away. Although pictures will never do this part of the world justice, it’s simply magnificent.

Lake Minnewanka

Follow in our footsteps Kerry flew to Calgary with Air Canada and travelled the Rocky Mountains with solo travel specialist Just You. Tours with Just You include private chauffeur service to the airport, use of the airport lounge in the UK. return flights from London, accommodation based on single occupancy, selected meals and a tour manager For more information on solo travel and holidays to Canada speak to our Silver Travel Advisors on 0800 412 5678. or email: help@aamail.org

Our journey was drawing to a close with a final stop in Calgary, and it’s fair to say we genuinely didn’t want to say goodbye to the Rocky Mountains, or each other –what would we do without Lezli telling us where to be and what to do when we got back home! It’s strange that you enter the journey just a short time ago as complete strangers, but it’s impossible after sharing so much that you leave as anything other than travel buddies.

We spent the night in Oberammergau so next morning there was a chance to explore the village and lovely surroundings. We could visit any of the churches or the local Museum featuring local art and more about the Passion Play. But I decided to wander through the lanes, lined with flowerdraped balconies, wood-carving items and decorative frescoes glowing on so many façades, be it religious themes or fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood. The streets were busy, packed with souvenir shops and outdoor restaurants so I strolled along the Ammer river, enjoying Kofel’s shimmering reflections and the peaceful countryside, just minutes from the centre.

OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY AND AUSTRIAN TYROL

16 Solange Hando enjoyed McCabe Travel’s pilgrimage holiday which included the Oberammergau Passion Play as well as scenic lakes and mountains in the Austrian Tyrol. Kofel, the rocky limestone peak, rose ahead of us silhouetted against the blue sky above lush wooded slopes. At 1343 metres, it took my breath away as I gazed in anticipation at the scenic icon of Oberammergau. Two years after the pandemic, the Passion Play was back for a world-wide audience.

It all started in the 17th century when a plague sweeping across Europe reached Oberammergau in Bavaria. As villagers prayed to stop the Black Death, they vowed to stage a Passion Play every 10 years and according to legend, everyone was saved from that day onwards. The first play was held in 1634 and the purposebuilt theatre (19th century) has been extended and enhanced with shelter for all, under-floor heating, gently padded seats and more, catering for over 4000 spectators.. The play spreads over the afternoon and evening sessions (2½ hours each) and although it is in German, we could follow the action through our English booklets. Now imagine almost 2000 villagers including children, orchestra, choir, live animals from camels to sheep, it is truly overwhelming from the Entry to Jerusalem all the way to the Crucifixion. Now and then ‘Living Images’ from the Old Testament light up the stage, linking visions from the past to the ongoing action. It’s inspiring, deeply stirring at times and extremely powerful in the final scenes. Whatever your religion or country, this is sure to make you think. As in later years, the 2022 version has been updated to reflect new concerns and interpretation for the modern audience. My favourite part? ‘The final Hallelujah beautifully sung and uplifting, ‘Risen is the Lord’, a message full of hope. ‘This was my third visit’, said my neighbour, ‘and every time I learn more’. He was not the only returnee and ‘once in a generation’, the Oberammergau Passion Play remains a unique experience, as native villagers continue their centuries long tradition. On or off stage, every role is a coveted honour, even if you have to grow unruly hair for your part or sort out your usual working hours. Profits help to fund community projects.

TIPS for your TRIP

‘Would you like a cruise to Pertisau? It’s a small resort on the western shore, right on the edge of the Karwendel Alpine Park.’

l You can choose your own pace throughout but comfortable shoes are recommended.

l Expect changeable weather in the mountains, pack accordingly.

BACK TO THE TYROL

l Enjoy your free time, exploring, shopping or simply relaxing.

We attended the Passion Play half-way through a week-long holiday, with plenty of time either side to enjoy the wonderful Tyrol. Our rooms were kept in Fischerwirt, a traditional Austrian hotel with panoramic views in Achenkirch village at the northern end of Achensee Lake. At over 900 metres, this is the largest lake in the Tyrol, framed by forested slopes and high peaks. From early mist to luminous skies and golden sunsets, I was spellbound from morning to night. It was a great place to relax or you could join optional or included excursions, such as the open air Tyrolean Farm Museum, the high pastures strewn with flowers and scenic valleys. We visited Innsbruck, the capital with a ‘Golden Roof’, Rattenberg -a delightful town on the river Inn- but Achensee always called us back.

l McCabe pilgrimage offers far more than you’d expect and everyone is welcome.

The sailing was superb, so refreshing in the summer sun, though most exciting on shore were the incredible views from the top of the cable car, lake and mountains greeting us like a scene from heaven. The perfect end to our ‘pilgrimage holiday’ with McCabe. More Information: Solange Hando travelled with McCabe Travel on their Austria & Oberammergau Passion Play 2022 tour. Visit www.mccabe-travel.co.uk Call 0800 412 5678 to book your trip to Oberammergau with Silver Travel Advisor: the Passion Play closes on October 2nd 2022.

Then there was time for a ride on Laber Bergbahn, the nostalgic gondola on the edge of town, rising to 1684 metres where edelweiss bloomed along the trails and birds twittered all around. The views were amazing, dramatic mountains topping 2000 metres, green meadows rolling across the valley and the red roofs of Oberammergau glistening far below. But where was the iconic peak? I soon spotted it, almost dwarfed by the Bavarian Alps, but as enticing as ever, keeping watch over a village like no other I had ever seen.

l Passion Play: take a torch to read the script, no photos or videos.

JULIE WALTERS

20 CELEBRITY INTERVIEW | 50 PLUS MAGAZINE

WHEN Julie Walters first really burst onto the British consciousness as the feisty hairdresser wanting to better herself in Educating Rita the nation was captivated.

This love affair with the slightly-built actress with the high cheekbones and the chameleon acting abilities has continued ever since – through must-see TV series, compelling theatre and memorable films.

Julie still has traces of the Birmingham accent of her childhood, born the youngest of three children in Edgbaston. She wanted to act from an early age but her Irish-born, iron-willed mother wanted her only daughter to become a nurse.

with Victoria Wood for their winning TV partnership, notably in Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV. One of this series’ best regular slots was Acorn Antiques, with plotlines as

A NATIONAL TREASURE

Two of their joint works Talent and Nearly A Happy Ending were snapped up by TV, to rave reviews, and in 1981 they were given their own TV series Wood and Walters.

From here she joined a Liverpool theatre company and apprenticed as a stand-up comic, leading to stage appearances and a bawdy act on the cabaret circuit. Her time in Manchester also led to meeting and collaborating with aspiring writer and comedienne Victoria Wood.

She dutifully applied to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham but, eventually, the pull of acting proved too strong and she went to study English and Drama at Manchester Polytechnic.

The previous year, Julie had been a huge success starring in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s West End stage production of Educating Rita. For this in 1980, she won both the Variety Critic’s and London Critic’s Circle awards. When the film adaptation was planned, Julie seemed an automatic choice for the main role but was not considered bankable enough by producers who favoured Dolly Parton for the role. When Michael Cain was cast, however, Julie was chosen and went on to receive her first Oscar nomination for this Inperformance.1984,shereunited

In this role, all Julie Walters’ comedic skills seemed to come together, mutually complimenting Victoria Wood’s writing skills, to create an iconic character which really engaged with the nation – and still does thanks to telly repeats.

Julie herself was diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer in 2018 but, after surgery and chemotherapy, she entered remission. She is very straightforward about her life and career. “I think there was a breakthrough period where I did Educating Rita and Victoria Wood’s work very close together,” she has stated. “I’d just started to be known through Victoria’s stuff with Wood and Walters, which came out very close to Educating Rita. It was a quite a grand slam in a way for me, really useful for me doing those two things.”

21 shaky as the scenery, and one of the main characters was general dogsbody Mrs Overall.

She is about to impress us once more on the small screen with a new Channel 4 drama series Truelove where the hype promises it “breaks he rules for older characters on screen”.

In between, she fitted in surprise hit Paddington in 2014 and then Paddington 2 in 2017, Mary Poppins Returns in 2018 and The Secret Garden in 2020.

Dinnerladies proved another remarkably success series with a talented cast including Julie as the mother of Victoria Wood’s character. This was in spite of Julie being only three years older than Victoria! By then, audiences were used to the reliability of Julie Walters’ comic skills but at the same time she was also gaining plaudits for her stage work in more serious roles like Macbeth, The Rose Tattoo and All My Sons. She won a Laurence Olivier Award for the Unafraidlatter.

Away from TV, film and theatre, Julie, now 72, is married to Grant Roffey and they have a daughter, Maisie.

As for life generally, she believes “Self worth is everything. Without it life is a misery.” And on the future: “I don’t like the future sewn up. I like an open book – the feeling that anything can happen.”

to stretch her acting skills, though, she embarked on a series of film roles which definitely took her away from lightweight comedy roles. Her turn as brothel madame Cynthia Payne in the very successful 1987 film Personal Services demonstrated the breadth of Julie’s acting skills.

She was the unsophisticated, small-town wife of Phil Collins in Buster the following year and the man-chasing mum in Killing Dad or How to Love Your Mother in 1989.

Julie played the maternal wife Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter films, bringing her usual quirky personality and warmth to this ongoing role. Her more recent films include Wah-Wah in 2005, Becoming Jane in 2007 and in 2008 she went into unchartered waters with the mega musical hit film Mamma Mia! In 2018, she reprised the same role in the equally popular Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!

Julie has had numerous awards and accolades including an OBE in 1999 and a CBE in 2008. Industry recognition for her work in film and TV includes five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Her seemingly star-studded life, though, has not all been plain sailing. Her daughter suffered from lymphoblastic leukaemia when she was two years old and received treatment until she was four, getting the all-clear at aged six.

She starred with Liza Minella as a tap student in Stepping Out in 1991 and was remarkable as Joe Orton’s mother in the critically acclaimed Prick Up Your Ears in 1987. Perhaps one of her best films was the stern but encouraging dance teacher in Billy Elliott in 2000 which earned her a second Oscar nomination. Julie was now a popular choice for a range of highprofile roles and in 2003 she joined Helen Mirren in the hugely popular Calendar Girls, all about the WI ladies who posed nude for a charity calendar.

And when it comes to Julie Walters’ career, anything usually does.

It’s a love story with a thriller element set against what happens when we age. Julie joins a starry cast including Clarke Peters, Phil Davis and Peter Egan and, unsurprisingly, the series is much anticipated.

Judith Bromley Russell & Russell

The issue of care and welfare is gaining more and more coverage in the media. It’s not surprising really as there are more of us living well in to old age. Not only that, mental health and wellbeing is high on the social agenda. The subject presents a thorny question; how will you be looked after if anything happens to you? If you’re diagnosed with a degenerative mental condition, such as dementia what will you do? If you need care because you’ve been involved in an accident that’s left you mentally unable to cope on your own, or if you simply need more help as you age, whether that be at home or in a residential care facility, how will you ensure you’re wellbeing is taken care Fromof?a legal perspective, there’s a simple answer: a Lasting Power of Attorney. This is a legal document which allows a person (the donor) to select another person, or persons, to act on their behalf if they can no longer do it for themselves. There are two types of power of attorney; property and financial affairs which gives someone of your choosing the authority to make decisions about your money and assets – paying bills, collecting benefits, selling your home – and a health and welfare Power of Attorney. This gives an attorney (the person you selected to act for you) the authority to make decisions about your lifestyle. This includes any medication you may need, where you live, what you eat and even whether you’re given life sustaining treatment or not.

LEGAL | 50 PLUS MAGAZINE

Health and Welfare Power of Attorneys are increasingly being taken up because many care homes are asking for them now. Even if people are receiving care at home, more local authorities are seeking confirmation that there is one in place and who has the authority to deal with the council on the donor’s behalf.

ENSURE YOUR HEALTH AND WELFARE WITH A POWER OF ATTORNEY

22

Before a Power of Attorney to be implemented it has to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. Your solicitor will do this for you. Once set up and registered, a Health and Welfare Power of Attorney can only be activated at a time when you’ve lost mental capacity. The advantage of setting up a Power of Attorney is that it gives you options. Perhaps the most important one is that it allows you to choose who you want to look after you rather who the state thinks should act for you. You can appoint as many attorneys as you like who can make decisions for you collectively or you can give individuals authority on specific matters. Although your attorney has as much decision making power as you, you can limit their complete control if you have concerns. Your solicitor will be able to discuss this with you. When it comes to choosing an attorney, you should think about how well the person looks after their own affairs. Are they good with money, do they make foolish or rash decisions? Do you know the person well and, more importantly, do you trust them to make decisions in your best interests? After all, they’re likely to be making what could be some very important decisions on your behalf. For a Health and Welfare Power of Attorney, you can choose anyone over the age of 18. The usual choices are a spouse or relative. You can also appoint a friend to the task or even your solicitor. If, for any reason, your attorney is unable or unwilling to act for you, you can stipulate a replacement. Finally, a Power of Attorney gives you peace of mind. Putting one in place ensures that there’ll be someone on hand who can manage you affairs if you can’t. If you choose not to set up a Power of Attorney and you need someone to act for you, your family will have to apply for a Deputyship with the Court of Protection. The problem with this is that it’s a costly and time consuming process (around six months) during which time the Court will decide what happens to you, not your loved ones.

There’s also the risk that the Court will appoint a Deputy which may not be a family member or a person you would have chosen. While all this is being sorted out, your assets will be frozen which could mean your loved ones end up paying for your care, medication and any other expense you need until the Deputy has been appointed. If you’re interested in setting up a health and Welfare Power of Attorney, Russell & Russell offers a free no obligation consultation to discuss your circumstances and needs. russellrussell.co.uk

You can also park on Le Mans Crescent near the town hall or the Market Place car park (over the top of what was formerly Debenhams). All these car parks are within a couple of minutes walk away from us & we really hope our customers old & new will continue to visit our store.

The nearest car park is on King Street off Deansgate which is at the side of the old main Post Office.

The trouble is no building work has yet been started & there is a constant stream of traffic looking where they can park. With this in mind we’d like to advise our customers on where the most convenient places to park are located.

Bolton is going through a difficult transformation at the moment where there is too much retail space that has to be used for different purposes. There are a lot of apartment building under construction at the present time & once these are fully occupied it will help with the regeneration of this once glorious town centre. With people come micro businesses and already we are seeing small convenience stores opening selling food & other household goods & I’m sure there will be many more to follow. So in the meantime I implore you all to support our independent family business & let your friends & families know about us please.

consider buying an ENERGY-EFFICIENT APPLIANCE. It will have its own energy efficiency label which runs from A to G with A being the most energy-efficient.

Take a hard look at your CLEANING PRODUCTS and look at not only the price but what ingredients they use. Many contain detergents, preservatives or foaming agents made from toxic chemicals that can go into streams and rivers causing pollution and damage to ecosystems.

Try buying natural cleaning products or consider making your own. Vinegar, lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda, for example, creates a sustainable and cheaper cleaning alternative that really works. YOUR 2022

HOME ECO FRIENDLY IN

27 HOME | 50 PLUS MAGAZINE

NOT so long ago trying to make your home more eco-friendly was more of a political statement than anything else but now it’s a financial necessity. Creating a greener, more environmentally-conscious place to live in makes economical sense when energy bills are soaring and the cost of everything we buy to eat or use has suddenly increased. These can be small changes or bigger ones but the reality today in our homes is that looking after the environment makes sense all Oneround.of the smaller changes that could make a big difference is switching to LED LIGHT BULBS. They are undoubtedly more energy-efficient, using less electricity than traditional light bulbs and they last much longer.

Consider RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY in solar panels. They convert the sun’s energy into electricity using photovoltaic cells to allow you to generate your own reliable, sustainable and lowmaintenance source of energy. They also save on tonnes of carbon emitted nationally and add to the joined-up thinking of investing in an electric car and charging it at home.

ELECTRIC CARS are eco-friendly because diesel and petrolfuelled cars are major contributors to global warming via the CO2 emissions involved. Electric vehicles don’t use traditional fuels and they don’t produce any air pollutants or air toxics In the home, invest in a SMART THERMOSTAT which is wi-fi enabled and can be remote-controlled from any smart device. A smart thermostat can be connected to your central heating system, all types of boilers and air conditioning systems. This clever piece of technology that saves money on energy bills each year remembers your home’s heating patterns and reacts to temperatures.outsideItwill also automatically switch off your system when you leave the property and start it up again in time for your return. LOG BURNERS undoubtedly make a home look warmer and more friendly but they still need help improving energy bills. Ensure your stove is properly cleaned out and that your chimney is swept at least once a year. Always light your fire from the top down and control the airflow to even out the fire strength. Stove fans can help circulate warmth throughout your home.

COMPOST your food waste to cut down on the amount of food waste that ends up in landfill and produces methane gas that pollutes the environment. Putting peelings and other food waste in a compost bin allows you to dispose of waste sustainably and create free fertiliser to use on your plants. At home as everywhere else, encourage the mantra “reduce, reuse and recycle.”

DRAUGHT EXCLUDERS are also very useful for stopping draughts around window and door frames. Foam, metal or plastic strips are ideal and you can also buy excluders for letterboxes or keyholes from local DIY stores or online which are easy to fit. Having your BOILER SERVICED is also vital to ensure it’s running safely and efficiently. It could be burning more fuel to heat your home, especially as it gets older, which causes bills to rise and energy consumption to increase. Choose a licensed engineer to identify any problem components and keep your boiler running more economically.

Jack has also seen the benefits to his health and confidence too – and it’s all thanks to the professionals at Renovo Dental.

Usman, a highly experienced clinician with In what was a complex challenge, the professionals at Renovo Dental formulated a dental implant plan that has been a huge success for patient Jack Morris

But when he asked for a consultation with the team at Renovo Dental, he began to see light at the end of the tunnel, as he explains: “I had lost my upper teeth at quite an early age and I had a lot dental work done on my lower teeth which was failing. “I had swapped dentists a number of times and then the dentist I moved to retired,” recalls Jack, whose wife Shirley knew Dr Usman Riaz of Renovo Dental, having undergone implants with him almost a decade ago. “She was highly pleased with her implants,” says Jack. “I had always been told that I had insufficient bone to have implants and that it would be too complex – I wasn’t making any progress in improving the situation so I asked Shirley if Usman would see me for an assessment.”

s an extremely active 83-yearold, Jack Morris has undergone life-changing, dental implant treatment that has given him the smile he has always wanted.

TOTAL TRANSFORMATIONA

Seeking specialist dental treatment, patients throughout the UK travel to the new, Ribble Valley-based Renovo Dental, where there is a top team of dental specialists, in-house dental technicians and general practitioners working with some of the very latest state-of-the-art technology. After wearing loose dentures for several years and being advised on numerous occasions there was insufficient bone for dental implants, Jack felt he had come to the end of the road in his attempts to resolve the problem.

“During the initial assessment a CT scan was done and yes, it revealed Jack didn’t have sufficient bone. So, we agreed that bone grafting was the solution.” Bone grafting was performed to replace destroyed bone surrounding the teeth roots.

The bone graft then helped to serve as a platform for the regrowth of natural bone.

As a brand-new clinic, Renovo has invested in the latest digital dental technology, including a state-of-the-art CT scanner which allows the team to plan and perform very precise implant surgery. This CT-guided surgery for implants is faster, easier and more efficient for surgeons and safer, more comfortable and results in faster healing for patients.

33 a special interest in aesthetic and implant dentistry, readily agreed to see Jack, who went along to the beautifully restored Renovo surgery in the village of Chatburn: “Usman carried out the assessment – and while he said implants would be quite complex, he said it was possible.”

It’s made a terrific difference to my life,” says Jack, who spends time with Shirley in Tenerife each year. “I can now eat okay – and I like my food!” says the former award-winning Bolton Speakingbutcher.about Jack’s treatment, Usman adds: “Jack is a really sociable guy, prominent in the community and resolving his dental problems was a big thing for him. It wasn’t just about aesthetics it was a functional issue that was affecting his quality of life.”

Usman explains: “Jack had been told that implants just weren’t possible, but he persevered. He was struggling with loose fitting, partial dentures and was finding it difficult to eat.

I can’t recommend them highly enough. They treat you as a client with total respect –you’re not just a number.

Preparation is the key to the success and the team of dental nurses, dental technicians and implant surgeons, all play their part on the day. “No two smiles are the same, so there is no ‘one-size-fits all’ when it comes to this level of Implant dentistry,” says Usman. “Like all our other patients, the implants have completely changed Jack’s smile,” adds Usman. “Implants can transform people –they gain confidence and restore self-esteem. It may sound clichéd, but this treatment really does change their lives.” n

Working alongside Usman on Jack’s dentistry was highly experienced specialist periodontist and implant surgeon Dr Khurrum Hussain, who completed specialist training in periodontology at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute, London.

The best fruit and veg to grow as we approach an imminent drought declaration

With the period of January-June of this year being the driest since 1976 and droughts due to be declared across England, Tom Hilton, outdoor gardening and indoor gardening specialist at National Greenhouse, shares his thoughts and expertise on the best fruit and vegetables to grow while still saving water: While it’s obvious that all plants need water, it’s often not so obvious which can still grow well when water is sparse. So let’s go over a few of our plant pals that can thrive in drier conditions, as well as a couple of tips and tricks to keep them growing strong. The most well-known of these drought-resistant products is beans, including favourites such as chickpeas and black–eyed peas which are traditionally found in more arid environments, and so are easy targets when considering growing your own food with little water consumption. Tomatoes are also surprisingly hardy when it comes to a lack of water, being able to draw water from deeper soil when the surface layer becomes dry, meaning less water is required from you. Peppers, squash and aubergines are also all excellent candidates for low-water growing, especially if combined with a rain-water collection barrel to keep the soil nutrient rich and watered only when needed. While these are all great options, it’s important to remember that careful planning and the right soil composition is still needed despite a plant’s hardiness, and veg such as the tomato still need a healthy amount of water in their Wheninfancy.it comes to sparingly watering these plants, drip irrigation is by far the most effective method especially when the weather is hotter. Other methods can result in excess water on the leaves simply evaporating, meaning the plants are out of water and you’re out of pocket. Watering around dusk or dawn is most effective as it allows the water to be absorbed before the heat sets in and, as the plant matures, slowly reduce your watering. It’s also important to properly lay out your plants, doing away with the traditional row system and instead clustering plants together. Not only does this mean that the water you do provide is shared between the plants, but also allows leaves of larger plants to provide shade for smaller ones - a method known as companion planting - allowing the plants to work together and give you the best harvest possible.

“Many opticians will carry out an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan as part of the eye examination. This hospital-quality scan uses cutting-edge technology to look more closely at your retina. OCT technology uses light waves to take images of your retina; similar to how an ultrasound scan uses sound waves.

“The sight part of the test is known as refraction – this is where the optician will ask you to read letters on a chart in front of you whilst different lenses are out in front of your eyes to fine tune your prescription What should prompt you to go for an eye test –bearing in mind this may not be just for sight, but if you are worried about anything else?

Right now, there are three main diseases affecting our garden birds that are of serious concern.

Generally passed on by birds migrating into the UK, through direct contact or contaminated saliva and droppings. This viral infection occurs naturally among wild aquatic birds, like ducks, geese, and swans, worldwide. It can however also infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species, making good hygiene when feeding garden birds, a priority. Once again, feeding stations are a potential hotspot for transmission.

3753

“There are lots of age-related eye conditions, including cataracts and glaucoma, that an eye examination can also identify at an early stage – so it is crucial to get your eyes test regularly, especially as you get older.

Trichomonosis

“Other common stages of an eye exam include tonometry test –this uses puffs of air to measure pressure inside your eye, again this can help to identify any early signs of glaucoma. A slit lamp is used to check the health of your cornea, your iris and your lens. Your optician will use a powerful microscope to assess each eye.

A parasitic disease that is passed from bird to bird via saliva. This happens wherever birds feed intensively, including hanging feeders or bird tables. Whilst species can become infected, Finches are the most affected. Shockingly, the British Greenfinch population is now endangered and may face extinction after falling by a huge 66% since 2006 due to this disease and other common garden birds are also susceptible to Trichomonosis. Right now, Chaffinches are also experiencing the same dramatic decline as the Greenfinches.

“An optician will also ask you questions about your general health in order to build up an overall picture if your lifestyle and any issues they should be aware of.

A bacterial infection transmitted through rotting food and droppings of infected birds that contaminate food and water. This can cause salmonellosis in garden birds, especially in seed-eating birds such as Greenfinches and House Sparrows.

“A close inspection of the andnervediabetes among them, even if the patient feels fine and shows no other symptoms.

What will an optician test for and check (beyond long and short sightedness)?

FOOD, FEET & FAECES

During an OCT scan, you will be asked to sit in front of a small machine with your chin placed on a support. The instrument then takes a picture of your eyes, revealing to the optician what is going on beneath the surface of the eye. They will review this information as part of your eye examination.

“Redness and irritation are often an early warning signal that your eyes could do with a bit more looking after. This can be caused by a range of factors including fatigue, allergies, over-wearing contact lenses or an infection such as conjunctivitis. Your option can advise and recommend treatment if it’s needed.

6. Thyroid eye disease: Thyroid eye disease is a condition in which the eye muscles, eyelids, tear glands and fatty tissues behind the eye become inflamed. This can cause the eyes and eyelids to become red, swollen and uncomfortable and the eyes can be pushed forward (‘staring’ or ‘bulging’ eyes).

How clean gardens are the route to Wild Bird Health

36 GARDEN | 50 PLUS MAGAZINE

To avoid the spread of disease, supporting birds responsibly means making the right choices and following the right steps. Using the right bird feeder and adopting a regular and effective cleaning routine is critical.

Ø Free from FEET - Birds don’t wash their feet! If a bird can stand in a feeder or water source, then it will spread disease. Ø Choose Wisely – ensure your feeder doesn’t allow birds to stand in it. Also choose one that is quick and easy to clean. If it is difficult to do so, then you most likely won’t clean it frequently enough. Ensure it is made from a non-porous material and has a smooth surface.

FOOD & FEET Ø Keep Food Dry - Only use feeders that prevent the seed from getting wet. Bird seed that is exposed to rain and becomes wet is a more suitable environment for disease transmission. The food MUST remain dry and free of mould whilst in the feeder.

We all love to see a garden filled with birds feasting, drinking, and bathing. But the bird feeders, bird tables and other feeding points we put up, can easily become a focus for the spread of disease. Our feeders and drinkers tend to attract high numbers of different bird species which can cause cross contamination. There are many disease transfer points across our gardens that need to be considered - bird tables, feeders, bird baths and window feeding trays will all transmit disease if not looked after and thoroughly cleaned Separatingfrequently.Feed,Feet & Faeces is key to protecting our wild birds. We must ensure they cannot stand, regurgitate, or defecate in the food or water they are given. It’s vital to clean bird feeders and tables regularly because if we don’t then we are literally, killing with kindness. Here is a guide to help you keep your garden clean, by Finches Friend and its ambassador, Naturalist Martin Hughes-Games.

A good option for plant lovers is a pergola. It’s a feature in itself but growing your favourite climber up it quite literally takes the look to another level. One fast-growing option is Trachelospermum jasminoides (star jasmine), which has evergreen

“Headaches could also be a sign that you need to pay your eyes some attention – eye strain (either from an outdated prescription or too much time spent looking at a screen), can lead to headaches. If you are experiencing headaches regularly it can be easy to overlook eyes as the root cause. really is important to book an eye examination if anything at all is concerning you. For more advice visit www.essilor.co.uk

“If you are experiencing any changes to your vision or pain, redness and discomfort for more than a couple of days then you should get your eyes tested. Symptoms such as eye pain, burning, blurred / double vision, floaters with flashing lights and droopy eyelids could all be signs that something isn’t right.

Ø

OTHER STEPS TO KEEP BIRDS HEALTHY

In addition to the above, if possible, it helps to provide several feeding stations to reduce the number of birds in any one spot. It’s also a good idea to rotate the position of feeders to minimise droppings and food waste in areas underneath them. Doing this, should help to create a safer garden for our feathered friends. www.finchesfriend.com

GARDEN HYGEINE Ø It’s also good practice to clean the areas surrounding and below your feeders and tables. Be sure to remove any wet, soiled, or spoiled food and droppings from these spaces. Ø Where possible place your feeder in an elevated position to avoid contamination.

Ditch The Table - Do not use table feeders. Sick birds sitting directly on bird seed are more likely to contaminate it. Stick with a perch feeder wherever possible.

CLEANING YOUR FEEDER OR BIRD TABLE

1. Wear gloves 2. Use warm, soapy water to clean the top of the table ensuring that all food and droppings are removed 3. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and let it dry 4. Spray with non-toxic disinfectant or weak bleach solution.

Ø Also, avoid feeding on the ground as this quickly becomes stale and encourages unwanted guests.

Ø Cover Up - It should not be possible for birds to access the food with anything except their beak! Don’t allow them to walk in their food. Dirty FEET can spread droppings and therefore disease.

CLEANING YOUR FEEDER

1. Wear gloves 2. Remove or empty old food 3. Take it apart before scrubbing with hot soapy water and a brush 4. Rinse thoroughly with cold water to leave no trace and dry 5. Treat with a non-toxic disinfectant or weak bleach solution 6. Rinse again and dry before re-filling

Water - Many of the same rules apply. Provide clean drinking water every day and wash it properly weekly. Dirty water can stand stagnant for weeks or months making disease transmission an inevitable consequence. If you use a bird bath, avoid clay, cement, or corroded iron as they are not ideal and can contaminate the water.

5. Rinse again and let it dry before re-filling

As above, foot contamination is common, so as with feeders, clean and re-fill weekly.

Every provider will have a different process at this stage. For example, if you are on a fixed tariff there may be an exit fee to pay.

Some providers may even allow you to take the same tariff to your new property. It’s best to check with the provider by calling or going on their website to double check this information.

Moving house can be a stressful process and managing utility bills as well as council tax can make for a complicated move.

Submit a final meter reading

to transitioning utility bills and the council takes when moving home: Contact Before leaving your current home, it is advisable to call your current energy provider in good time to allow for a smooth process. Inform the company that you will be leaving and provide them with the new home address. This will provide them with a place to send a final bill. This bill should detail if there are any outstanding payments to be made or if your account is in credit.

Taking meter readings, communicating with suppliers and researching the correct tariffs are some of the primary actions that are involved in the move.

If your house has a water meter, this means you are not charged on the rateable value of your property but on how much you use. The same process will apply here, so even if you’re moving into a property without a meter you will still need to inform the provider of the move. Setting up in the new house

People moving home in the UK and Ireland are being urged to take expert advice to avoid unwanted charges and financial penalties. The removal experts at LOVESPACE are providing top tips on what to do with important bills when moving home.

Failure to complete these processes properly can land homeowners in hot water with possible financial penalties. Their spokesperson said: “Although it may not seem like a number one priority when moving your whole life to a different location, keeping on top of bills is incredibly important.

“It’s always best to be on top of things. Making a list or setting reminders on your phone are great ways to keep tabs on progress when setting up bills for your new address.

Again, this will vary from property to property but once initial contact has been made with the provider it is likely that they will ask you to give them a final meter reading. This will need to be submitted on the day you move out of the property. If you do not remember to do this, you could be subject to charges from the person moving in next or from a daily standing charge even if the property is empty. Taking a picture of the meter is the best way to cover yourself in this scenario.

Avoid financial penalties when moving house

There are a few important steps to take once occupants leave a property and when they move into a new property.

Once you arrive at the new property it’s important to work out the current set-up in the house. In some instances, the electricity,

water and gas may need to be reactivated by the supplier before they can be used. Locating the meter can be difficult, especially in older properties where it can be lurking in unsuspecting spots. If you’re struggling to find the energy meter, try looking:

• Your annual energy/water usage or costs.

• Under the stairs

If you still can’t find the meter and you’re in a new build it is possible that one hasn’t been installed yet. When you contact the new energy/water provider, this may be a service that they can provide for you. Again, you will need to take a meter reading and submit this to the current energy supplier. You can find out who the supplier is by asking the landlord/letting agent, checking for an old bill or by contacting the Distribution Network Operator. Once this is complete it’s time to find a new provider. For this you’ll need:• Your postcode • The name of your current supplier.

• The name of your current energy/water tariff.

To help weigh up the different options try using a comparison site to give you the best deal that works for you.

Having a water meter is not essential and it is at the homeowners discretion whether one is installed. Unmetered customers will be charged a fixed amount, which may or may not include sewage charges. These are all things that can be discussed with your new provider, who will tell you the most suitable option.

Council tax

It’s important to update the local council when you’re changing addresses. This will avoid you getting overcharged on your council tax or being subject to a financial penalty. It’s likely the council will ask for these details before sending the final bill: • your new address • your old address and the date you are leaving the property • the name of the new owner or tenant of your old address • the name and address of the solicitor dealing with the sale Once you leave the current address the local council will likely send the final bill as a one off payment. After this, the new property will be billed annually. If you’re staying within the same postcode the local authority may allow you to continue on the same direct debit

to be aware that councils can charge an empty property tax if a property is left empty or unfurnished. This is to encourage homeowners to not leave their properties empty for extended periods of time.

Lorraine Stratton-Webb, Partner in the residential conveyancing team at Clough & Willis Solicitors Answers your questions on equity release

LEGAL | 50 PLUS MAGAZINE

1) The most common is through a lifetime mortgage, whereby you release the lump sum by way of a mortgage against your property. Monthly repayments are not required and the interest accrues against the property. On your death, or on moving into

Q. What is Equity Release? Equity release is the releasing of some of the equity/capital that has accrued in your property during your ownership. You have two options when choosing an Equity Release product.

2) The other option is a home reversion plan whereby you sell all, or a portion of your property to the home reversion provider. Similar to the first option there is no interest to be paid, however it is likely that the provider will buy the proportion of the property off you at less than market rate. You will have the right to reside in the property for the rest of your life.

Q. Can I sell my house if I have taken out an Equity Release? Yes you can. However the loan would have to be repaid, unless you have agreed with the Equity Release provider that the loan can be transferred to another property. The lender would not automatically transfer the loan as the new property would need to meet the lender’s criteria.

For both types of equity release some providers offer facilities that can allow you to draw more funds in the future. However, this can depend on the valuation of your property at the time that you require the extra funds. Also if you have opted for a reserve facility this may mean that the interest that you pay is higher than those products without a reserve. Again it is important that you obtain the advice to ensure that the product you get is appropriate for your particular circumstances Q. Will taking out an Equity Release affect my benefit? Equity Release might affect any means tested benefits, particularly if you receive Pension Credit, council tax support or housing benefit. It may affect your tax position. Therefore you should take appropriate advice from the Inland Revenue, Benefits Agency or local Citizens Advice Bureau before proceeding further.

Or by email lorraine.webb@clough-willis.co.uk

Are you finding life is too short?

For more information on Equity Relase contact Lorraine on freephone 0800 083 0815

Q. Will I no long need to maintain or insure my home? Your obligation to insure and maintain your home continues after taking out an Equity Release. It would be classed as a breach of a term of the mortgage if you did not insure or maintain the property once you have taken out an Equity

Q. Would taking out an Equity Release affect my Pension credit? If you are considering taking out an equity release it could reduce your Pension Credit. It is therefore essential that you obtain the appropriate advice before proceeding with an Equity Release to see whether the product would be appropriate or not.

Equity release allows homeowners over 55 to remain in their much-loved home and release an income or lump sum from their property

Q. Can you obtain further money from both schemes if required?

Cream is vegetarian friendly with Vegan options plus halal and gluten free and if you are not able to get there you can still enjoy their great food as the restaurant operates a busy takeaway service. Cost wise it seemed good value for the standard of food provided and size of portions and I would thoroughly recommend a visit to both Cardamom Cream and Ramsbottom – I for one will certainly be going there again!

I had a generous and delicious chicken tikka with Basmati rice and a side order of cheese topped nan bread all washed down with a couple of pints of Indian lager while my son was a bit more adventurous going for Cardamom Cream House Special – a dish or minced chicken with coconut, almonds, cream and butter with Basmati rice and plain nan. He also reported the dish to be excellent and judging by the speed with which it disappeared I could see that to be true. However, after a visit to Ramsbottom’s acclaimed Cardamom Cream restaurant I am thinking of reviving the tradition! Having only launched in 2020, Crystal Cremations is a brand-new company in the funeral services industry, offering low-cost Funeral Plans ranging from direct cremations to traditional full-service funerals. What makes Crystal’s journey so remarkable is that within 12 months they’ve gone from a new company to the only prepaid funeral plan provider in Bolton and one of only 26 in the U.K to be authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority! (FCA). How did they manage to achieve this while so many well-established Funeral Planning Companies failed to gain authorisation?

Arrange a Direct Cremation today from £975 What is a Crystal Direct Cremation?

A direct cremation is ideal for those who don’t want a fuss and simply require a service that meets their needs, with no hidden costs and no hidden extras, other than things such as when a larger coffin is required. Please feel free to contact our support team if you have any questions or concerns. When your loved one passes away they will be collected and taken to one of our reputable mortuary services where they will be respectfully cared for. Your loved one will then be taken in an appropriate funeral vehicle to the crematorium. the cremation then takes place, usually without mourners.

The difference in price between what we pay your funeral service provider (the wholesale cost) and the price of our funeral plans is the result of marketing, operational/ business overheads and compliance costs, including the cost of managing the trust arrangement which ensures money paid towards pre-paid funeral plans is kept safe. Mood Boosting - Psychologists have found that even if you’re in a bad mood smiling can lift your spirits. Boost your immunity - smiling makes your body more relaxed and contributes to a good health and stronger immunity.

Relieves Stress - Smiling releases endorphins which reduce stress and change your mood. Even forcing a smile has the same effect.

What if you don’t like your smile, do you suffer from loose poorly fitted or broken dentures?

Here at The Bolton Denture Centre we have been helping denture wearers to get beautiful smiles for over 15 years.

Smiling has a host of benefits which include:

Lowering blood pressure - Reducing stress and smiling can also help lower blood pressure. Smiles are infectious - Not only do others smile when we smile but studies also suggest we appear more attractive to others when we smile.

A smile is one of the most basic, biologically uniform expressions of all humans. Smiling is not just a universal means of communicating, it’s also aw frequent one. More than 30% of us smile more than 20 times a day and less than 14% of us smile less than 5 times a day.

Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are also in a pretty hostile environment in the mouth, being attacked by strong acid, bacteria, hot, cold and spicy food. Denture material absorbs liquids and food odour. Daily cleaning is essential as well as professional ultrasonic cleaning in a dental laboratory at least once a year. Due to constant bone resorbtion dentures will become loose sooner or later. Loose dentures will increase damage to the gums and bone structure, and increase the risk of breakage. Have them re-lined as soonas possible to get a good fit. It only takes a day or two. Have your dentures inspected by a Clinical Dental Technician at least every two years, or more frequently if necessary. The standard Corolla is already a great family car comfortable, well made, well equipped and quite frugal - the GR Sport adds more striking styling with a 2-litre petrol engine which, linked to that electric motor, means 181bhp, a highly respectable 0-62mph in 7.9sec and top speed of 112mph.

STEVE HOWARTH’S TEST DRIVE

The Corolla range starts at £26,895 for the Icon trim non hybrid 1.8 petrol and goes up to £34,555 for the range-topping touring sports in Excel trim pitching the hybrid GR Sport towards the top of the range in terms of pricing.

In 2-litre specification, as tested, the Corolla GR Sport comes in at £32,645. For that you get healthy equipment levels with items such as LED headlights, those 18-inch machined alloy wheels, that extra body styling and interior sporting touches plus head-up display as standard.

So despite the name, the GR Sport doesn’t have any specific sport tuning apart from distinctive 18-inch alloy wheels. What it does have is that striking styling – unique front and rear bumper trim, GR Sport badging and inside supportive sports seats, a head-up display and large central infotainment touchscreen.

Rather as BMW have their M Sport versions and Audi their Sportline models the GR Sport is a more road-friendly, less license losing version with sporty DNA and also comes as a ‘self-charging’ hybrid - the batteries are topped up when you hit the brakes and a small electric motor can then improve either efficiency or Youperformance.canevendrive the Corolla on battery power alone with a light right foot for short distances and there are eco, normal and sport driving modes to choose from.

Other standard kit includes adaptive cruise control, reversing camera, heated front seats and a raft of the latest Toyota safety

I got really excited as GR stands for Gazoo Racing (the motorsport/performance arm of the Japanese manufacturer) and I have already sampled super-hot GR versions of the Yaris and Supra. However, I then realized that Toyota think you can have too much of a good thing and so are not currently selling the full-blown Corolla GR with its 300bhp, turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine and adjustable-torque-split all-wheel drive and limited-slip differentials in the UK.

So with the 2022 Corolla already a great drive adding some sporting credentials with the GR Sport version could be a way for you to really stand out on the high street. More info at www.toyota.co.uk

COROLLA GR SPORT

OUR latest test car came with some racing pedigree and badging kudos as the Toyota Corolla we got our hands on was the GR Sport Nowversion.atfirst

Toyota say the car will give a combined mpg figure of up to 54mpg and my real world experience backs that up as over a near 300 mile round trip to a motoring launch event in the south midlands I got just a shade under that figure, despite travelling for the majority of the journey at motorway speeds (M6 roadworks permitting).

the car is quite quick with steering that feels wellweighted, a sporty yet comfortable ride and that typical Toyota build quality that inspires a feeling of solidity and strength.

For all the latest car tests see the motoring section of our website at www.50plusmagazine.co.uk/motors/

Comfort is the priority here and it is, like those great Citroens of the past, a case of wafting along as the superb suspension and extra comfort seats soak up all road imperfections. However, as this was the 225bhp plug in hybrid (PHEV) version this C5 X can also pick up its skirts and get a move on when in sport mode – 0 to 60 in a very respectable 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 145mph. This comes from a combination of a front wheel drive 1.6 petrol engine and an electric motor that is capable of up to 31 miles on a full charge without a drop of petrol being used plus an eight speed silky smooth auto box. Also like its forebears the C5 X is striking to look at and has lots of road presence as it is 4.8 metres long and 1.8 metres wide. There are three trim levels ‘Sense Plus’, ‘Shine’ and ‘Shine Plus’, each as a Plug-in Hybrid or petrol and it was the latter, range topper, which I got to try. Build quality and materials on the interior are good and kit levels high with adaptive cruise, power tailgate, heads up display and heated power front seats being the highlights for me. There are also a raft of safety systems which put the C5 X up with the best in its D segment class. So this PHEV is refined and quiet, especially in electric only mode, comfy and quite fast and Citroen expect it to sell well, even though they are only being made to order with the first ones to hit UK Roads this summer. Apparently the Chinese are also quite keen on big Citroens so many C5 X’s are likely to find homes there too. Here there is also a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol with 129bhp (badged 130 and expected to be the biggest UK seller) and a 1.6-litre petrol with 178bhp, both non hybrid. Prices go from £27,790 to £33,810 for the non-hybrids and from £36,470 to £39,960 for the hybrid versions. For more information see www.citroen.co.uk

With more than a hint of iconic large Citroen’s of the past (think DS, CX and XM) their new flagship motor is, says the French manufacturer, both “a celebration of Citroën’s past, and a look into the future for the brand.”

IT’S a hatchback… an estate… an SUV – well the latest offering from Citroen is all three and more as they unveil the new C5 X.

CITROEN C5 X

In addition to its striking looks, the C5 X offers unrivalled comfort thanks to its ‘lounge like’ interior and Citroën’s ‘Advanced Comfort Programme’ with active suspension and ‘Advanced Comfort’ seats, aided by a multitude of driver safety aids and new 12-inch HD touchscreen with voice recognition. This has a new enhanced infotainment system with ambient backlighting, optimum ergonomic efficiency and ultimate smartphone compatibility. Users can customise their preferred shortcuts as key functions, whilst setting their own user profile and a new head-up display system helps to improve safety and driver Icomfort.gottotry out the new large Citroen at a recent UK drive event in beautiful Warwickshire countryside on the hottest day of the year –so the car’s excellent aircon got a big tick straight away.
