DAY EXCURSIONS 2012/13

Book at our office or ring and pay with your debit card at no extra charge. All excursions are pick up & set down on main roads close to your home as practical within our normal area. All pick ups & drop offs are normally completed within 1 hour subject to traffic conditions. Some pick ups are by a feeder vehicle, and where the route allows passengers will be first on first off basis. The base time is at Golborne, so some times will be before this time and some will be after depending on the destination. We always advise pick up times by phone the day before the excursion.

After a two year gap we return to the beautiful Red Sandstone border City. The City offers excellent shopping with a strong Christmas feel with around 50 stalls for the market experts. The whole area is pedestrianised which makes the whole experience so easy. We depart for home at 4.30pm.

SUNDAY 9th DEC 0800 BIRMINGHAM FRANKFURT CHRISTMAS MARKET & CRAFT FAYRE £20 50A £14.00C This is the largest authentic German market outside of Germany and Austria and is arguably one of the most popular Christmas markets in the UK. Normally over 150 stalls plus the city centre shops and all the famous names. Get out the cards and let’s go shopping. Return at 5pm.

SUNDAY 16th DEC 0830 YORK FOR THE FESTIVAL OF ICE ANGELS £17.00A £11.50C A magical day of Ice sculptures and outdoor entertainment with a sprinkling of snow guaranteed.

This true winter festival bringing York a winter wonderland of Ice Sculptures, stalls, outdoor food, street entertainers and snow showers. You will see Santa and can follow the parade of Angels through the streets.

Led by the beautiful Golden Angel. A great day out. We depart for home at 4.30pm.

A pleasant drive to Colne arriving in time for coffee and a little shopping. At 12noon we have our lunch of fish & chips, tea, bread & butter then it’s back to the store for the afternoon, departing 4pm.

We travel via the Cat & Fiddle to Buxton set in The Peak District Park and then on to Bakewell where it’s market day.

With its traditional busy stalls we spend time here to shop and get lunch before heading back to Buxton for a short stop. We depart for home at 5pm.

THURSDAY 28th FEB 0900 SOUTHPORT & THE TALBOT HOTEL 50/60s AND ELVIS £23.00A We arrive in Southport around 10am and allow a couple of hours for shopping before we go to The Talbot for our lunch and our afternoon entertainment on 50/60s plus Elvis theme. We depart for home around 4.30pm.

SATURDAY 2nd MARCH 0900 CHESTER & CHESHIRE OAKS £10.95A £7.75C We set down at Cheshire Oaks first then on to Chester City for 10.15. At 12.15 we pick up at The Oaks and travel on to Chester for the rest of the day. Return home at 4.30.

We go to Cleveleys where we set down in the main street for a couple of hours, then off to the Bourne Poacher for the afternoon to celebrate St Patrick. We depart for home at 5pm.

EASTER SUNDAY 31st MARCH 0830 NORTH WALES & LLANDUDNO £15.00A £10.00C We have a pleasant drive to Llangollen where we have a short stop for coffee.

Then on along the Old Stage Coach route with pretty views all the way to Bewts-y-Coed in the Snowdonia National Park where we allow time to find a little lunch. Early afternoon we travel down the Conway Valley to spend the rest of the afternoon in Llandudno. We depart for home at 5pm.

SATURDAY 16th MARCH 0830 SHREWSBURY £16.00A £11.00C This very attractive border town is sat in a loop of The River Severn. There are many historic and interesting buildings and plenty of quality shops to explore.

Dear Friends .... Welcome aboard your holiday starts here Welcome to Memory Lane’s tours for 2013. Whether you are new to Memory Lane or one of those highly valued customers who keep coming back to us, I do hope you’ll like what you read. A surprising amount of it is based on tour feed-back, so please keep it coming. I do read every word of it personally you know, and I do take notice!

For example, many of you have told me how much you like the flexibility in our tours. When you see the excursions included on many of our tours, you won’t see a date attached to them. This is so your driver can take account of local conditions, such as weather, markets or festivals and plan a final itinerary which takes best advantage of all opportunities.

Sometimes it’s best not to do things by the book, even if it’s just a matter of changing the order of the pages!

Obviously, some tours do require more detailed planning. With these, you’ll see the heading ‘itinerary’ instead of ‘excursions included’ in the pages that follow.

On the other hand, when it comes to customer care, I’m really proud that we do things by the book, often going beyond clients’ expectations and adding pages of our own! Have a look at details of our home pick-up services, for instance. Remember that all our tours are operated by highly professional drivers (I’m proud to be one myself) who will go the extra mile to look after you. On diner tours, you will enjoy the company and services of a second crew-member, the hostess, often someone you know!

Sometimes we even take a local specialist guide on board as well.

So enjoy your reading, book with confidence and, most importantly, have a great trip. I look forward to seeing you during what promises to be another bumper season.

A few things to keep in mind ... l

DINER EXECUTIVE TOURS

Our diner executive coaches are fullsized vehicles but with fewer seats than usual. The space saved is taken up by a kitchen and servery. Here the hostess prepares freshly made light lunches, with copious quantities of tea or coffee. She serves you at your seat. All you have to do is enjoy the experience. Oh yes, and the hostess does the washing-up, too.

You see, there are no plastic cups in our diners, just the real thing like you’d want for your guests at home! Obviously all this takes time. On the first and final days we stop, often off the motorway, for you to provide your own lunch. Even on these days, however, we’ll serve you complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits at your seat at some of our stops en route. l

SPECIAL MEAL ARRANGEMENTS

You’ll see the letters SMA against a few tours, rather than the more usual FB (full board) or HB (half board). “Special Meal Arrangements” means extra meals or snacks when in the hotel but not, for example, during coach journeys. l

EXECUTIVE AND CONTINENTAL TOURS

You’ll have opportunities to buy really good value hot and cold drinks on board.

In the UK, lunch stops will often be in reasonably priced outlets away from the motorways. On the continent we do make more use of motorway service areas, but they are generally quite reasonably priced by the standards in the country concerned. l

GROUPS

All our prices offer great value. However, we can often make them even more tempting for parties of 20 or more travelling together. Perhaps you like the idea of taking one of our advertised tours and don’t need too many pick-up points.

Or just tell us roughly where you’d like to go, and for how long, and we’ll come up with some mouth-watering ideas. Or give us more precise details of your plans and we’ll just provide the transport. However you approach it, tell us what you want us to do and watch us measure up to expectations. None of our group leaders are disappointed by our response - and there’s no charge for asking! l

OUR HOME PICK UP SERVICE

I know how much you like the peace of mind our door-to-door service gives you. So, you can look forward to being collected by a friendly driver, usually in a comfortable minibus (we’ve just had to increase the fleet because you like this part so much!) and be taken the often short distance to and from your

luxury coach. The driver will even load your luggage for you. By the way, just compare the way we do this with those who collect passengers in a full size shuttle coach, adding several needless hours to passengers’ journeys as they travel huge distances the length and breadth of the country, just to collect a large and viable load. Those of you who live beyond our home pick-up service area need not worry. We can usually offer you the same service for a remarkably small additional cost. We can also arrange for a small number of customers cars to be parked at our depot for those who wish, but cars are parked at your own risk. l

LUGGAGE, WALKING AIDS AND SCOOTERS

We’d be really grateful if you could manage with ONE CASE each! Even if you are travelling as a couple, we’d still be pleased if you could keep this request in mind: two small cases are always better than one big one. This is partly for the benefit of those of us who make all the luggage fit into the nooks and crannies of coach holds and minibus luggage compartments. But it’s also for you. You see, if your case weighs more than 20kg (see page 39 for more details) hotels are within their rights to refuse porterage. Please be sure to tell us if you’re planning to bring a wheelchair or other mobility device. We are happy to transport your wheelchair, but due to the limited luggage space it is important that you arrange this when making your reservation. We will carry small, lightweight scooters weighing approximately 21kgs. Please be aware that our drivers are not responsible for any damage to your machine when manoeuvring to and from the coach.

Please check that your chosen hotel allows wheelchairs. l

We use our own star rating scheme, based on our many years of experience.

In practice, it correlates quite closely with that of the motoring organisations. l

AND FINALLY

Day 2: Today we travel to Weymouth allowing time to explore. After lunch we return through Dorchester and Bere Regis and the pretty country side to Bournemouth.

Day 3: Our excursion visits Winchester with its connections to King Arthur then return through the New Forest to Christchurch and to the Hinton Firs.

Day 4: At Leisure in resort.

Day 5: Sadly we return home today.

11th February 5 Days/4 Nights Half Board £159 Early history says that the Romans built a large villa here who’s remains were found after a land slip in the 1930s and there are still some findings on display at the museum.

Until the 19th century Folkestone remained a small fishing community with a seafront that was continually battered by storms and encroaching shingle that made it hard to land boats. In 1807 an Act of Parliament was passed to build a pier and harbour by Thomas Telford. By 1820 a harbour had been enclosed but never used fully until the South Eastern railway purchased it for their links to the continent. The line closed in 2002 and is only used on special occasions.

The town suffered during the war years and the closure of the ferry service to France now has the town waiting for something new.

ITINERARY Day 1: We motor south by passing London to the coast arriving in time to settle in before dinner and Cabaret.

Day 2: We depart for Canterbury where will have a 2 hour stay to explore. After lunch we travel along some of the areas country lanes taking in a few surprises before returning to the hotel for 4.30pm.

Isles of Scilly form an archipelago of five inhabited islands and numerous other small rocky islets (around 140 in total) lying 45 km (28m) off Land’s End. They are all composed of granite rock of late Carboniferous age. The table provides an overview of the most important islands: the islands’ position produces a place of great contrast—the ameliorating effect of the sea means they rarely have frost or snow, which allows local farmers to grow flowers well ahead of those in mainland Britain. The chief agricultural product is cut flowers, mostly daffodils. Winds mean that spectacular winter gales lash the islands from time to time. This is reflected in the landscape, most clearly seen on Tresco where the lush subtropical Abbey Gardens on the sheltered southern end of the island contrast with the low heather and bare rock sculpted by the wind on the exposed northern end. The Isles of Scilly have a temperate Oceanic climate and are amongst the mildest and warmest climates in the United Kingdom. The islands were designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. The designation covers the entire archipelago, including the uninhabited islands and rocks and is the smallest such area in UK.

Unlike most of the town our hotel is situated in West Looe. It will probably take you some 10 minutes to walk to East Looe, unless you take the little ferry, but then that’s the charm of the place! The hotel offers us spectacular views from the lounge and a fine table d’hôte menu in the restaurant. Here they make considerable use of fresh local ingredients and fish bought the same day from the port’s fish market. We can relax and enjoy the view from either of the bars, one noticeably more lively than the other, and enjoying our good fortune to be in such a pleasant place.

These were formed some 200 million years ago, and are one of the features of the Jurassic Coast, on which the resort proudly stands and to which people come from all over the world.

ITINERARY Day 1 : We travel south leaving the motorway for lunch near Highbridge. Afterwards we travel on to Launceston where we take a refreshment stop at The Jamaica Inn, made famous by DAPHNE DU MAURIER’s novel.

Day 2: We start our day in Falmouth with narrow cobbled streets and piers, this town has a long history with the sea and even today still has major ship building carrying on. Shortly after lunch we visit Cornwall’s only city, Truro, we allow plenty of time to visit the Cathedral and the busy shopping area.

Day 3: We give you the chance to visit the Tate Galleries today, our first port of call is St Ives. Coaches are not allowed in the town so all coaches set down at the Park & Ride where a mini bus ferries in & out of the town for a small charge.

Departing early afternoon we travel the coast to Porthreath with excellent views of the harbour and the Huers Hut, then on for our afternoon tea stop at the Gold Centre.

Day 4: Following the narrow coastal road via Perranporth with superb views nearly all the way we head to Padstow for lunchtime. We allow plenty of time to explore before we return via the inland route.

Day 5: A scenic drive to Mevagissey a pretty but busy little port. If you like fresh caught and cooked fish, this is the place to get your lunch. We return after lunch to allow anyone time to visit the beach in St Agnes, it’s a good walk but very pleasant, and there is no access for a coach.

Day 6: Well regrettable but we have to go home today so be ready to leave before 9.00am and hopefully we arrive home late afternoon.

Bamburgh 22nd September 6 Days/5 Nights Half Board £419 The Northern parts of Northumberland are the most attractive in the region. This is particularly true of the area around Bamburgh with its magnificent castle, the home of the Armstrong family and the attractive nearby fishing port of Seahouses. From here you can sail to the Farne Isles, home of Grace Darling for her short life. There is also Holy Island and the Priory, the cradle of Christianity in the area, as well as the pretty walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. This is the border country, where England meets Scotland; it’s the battlefield of Flodden.

ITINERARY Day 1: We travel north via the motorway stopping for coffee en-route, and on to Hexham for you to find some lunch. We head north again arriving at the Victoria around 3.30pm. We settle in with enough time for a stroll around the village.

Day 2: We start by going south to Alnmouth and follow the coast via Embleton to Craster famous for its kippers, only buy the vacuum packed ones if you want to take some home. After lunch we travel on to our final stop at Seahouses with fine views on the Farne Islands & Bamburgh Castle.

Day 3: Morning visit to Bamburgh Castle included in tour price, the rest of the day free to do your own thing. Should you wish to go to The Farne Islands the coach will take you to Billy Shiels OBE, the best boat company in Seahouses.

On arriving in Porthmadoc there is time to explore and find a little lunch. We then travel the short distance along the coast to the Lion Hotel at Criccieth.

Day 2 : Today we give you the option to travel on the newly completed Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadoc to Caernarvon. This is 25 miles of stunning scenery, much of which cannot be seen from the region’s roads. The cost around £20. The rest of us travel along the coast to Pwllheli before crossing the Llyn to Trevor and then along the coast to Caernarvon with its narrow streets and pretty local shops plus a small market in the town square. The towering castle is where Prince Charles was invested as The Prince Of Wales. Also the restored Victoria Dock all make the town an interesting visit. We depart about 4pm back to The Lion Hotel.

Day 3 : A scenic drive through The National Park to Harlech and the small seaside resort of Barmouth overlooking Cardigan Bay. In the afternoon we return via Trawsfynydd and the Cob Causeway.

Day 4: We depart the hotel after our hearty Welsh breakfast and head for Llandudno. Here there is time to explore the shops and maybe take a ride up the Great Orme by Vintage coach or Tram. We depart for home about 3pm.

Best known today as both a medieval walled town and one of Wales’ favourite seaside resorts, Tenby is set in the only coastal National Park in Britain. Its ancient harbour, surrounded by Regency houses in pastel colours, is a magnet for artists and photographers. Its four sheltered beaches and safe bathing waters attract families throughout the season.

Tenby lies in a corner of Camarthen Bay, sheltered by Caldy Island, an ancient religious settlement which still houses a Cistercian community.

ITINERARY Day 1: We travel to Tenby via Mid Wales.

Day 2: Full day to Laughane, where Dylon Thomas wrote many of his works. Coffee stop here then on to the world famous Pendine Sands where many land speed records were made. Time to get some lunch at the local pub. We then travel via the narrow lanes to Wiseman’s Bridge and finally our last stop in Sandersfoot.

Day 3: Full day to St Govans, where you have the chance to see his chapel built in the cliff face. From here we visit a tiny café at Bosherton with its attractive church and lily ponds. We travel across the Tank Ranges to Angle with its beautiful beach and tiny cafe, then on to Pembroke. You can visit the castle or browse the town shops, we then return via The Ridgeway.

Day 4: Full day to Carmarthen, where first we start at the glass blower near Tenby before we head off to the market day at Carmarthen. On our return journey we visit the love spoon carver before returning to The Park.

On then to the capital of Connamara, Clifden a beautiful traditional Irish town set by the Owenglen River. ITINERARY Day 1: We head north into Ayrshire and later take in the fine views over The Firth of Cylde as we head for the ferry near Greenock. We cross the Firth by ferry and then we drive along the coast to Dunoon and the Esplanade Hotel.

Day 2 : A day of superb scenery as we travel through the Glens to Inveraray an attractive little town with plenty to see and do. Time for lunch (included in the diner tour) then on to Tighnabruaich with time to explore and get a cuppa at the tea room before returning via the head of Loch Long and Holy Loch to Dunoon.

Day 3 : A morning drive to Toward with good views of The Firth of Clyde. We then return to Dunoon before going over the hills to Ardentinny and Kilmun Church, then return via Holy Loch to Dunoon.

Day 4 : Today we start by going over the Rest & Be Thankful to Loch Lomond, then on to the village of Luss, voted Scotland’s most attractive village. We spend time here for lunch and sightseeing, then continue via Garelochead to Helensborough and Dumbarton and then back to Greenock for the ferry back to Dunoon and the Esplanade.

ITINERARY Day 1: After our door to door pick ups we head north and cross the border to our stop for lunch at Moffat. Then we travel on via Stirling to Blairgowrie and the Augus Hotel.

Day 2: We depart for a day of stunning scenery as we motor to The Spittal of Glenshee and pass all the ski slopes before we descend to Braemar. After a short stop we travel to Crathie Kirk for a short visit then on to Ballater for a lunch stop. After lunch we motor on through to Banchory where we turn south to Brechin and Blairgowrie.

Day 3: Our day starts with a visit to Perth, an interesting city with something for everyone. In the early afternoon we follow the River Tay back to Perth again.

Day 4: Our excursion today takes us via Dunkeld to Pitlchory where we have time to explore. After lunch we visit Blair Castle, the ancient seat of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl. The castle enjoys one of Scotland’s finest settings in the heart of Highland Perthshire. Our afternoon visit is included in tour price. After our tour we allow time to relax in the castle gardens, before we head through Straithardle back to Blairgowrie.

Day 5: A day at leisure in Blairgowrie.

Day 4 : We say goodbye to the Menzies and take the short ride to the Scottish Maritime Museum. A great visit where you will have chance to see a Steam Puffer (remember the Tales of Parahandy) plus many other interesting exhibits.

It’s possible that the City of Adelaide will still be here, before she starts her long journey to Australia. Afterwards we make our way to Ardrossen for our 12.30 sailing to BRODICK (We will not be giving you lunch today but snacks are available on board ship) arriving on Arran for 1.30. We then journey around the southern part of Arran taking in the views of Holy Island & Highland Clearances Memorial. We have a number of photo stops along the way arriving at Blackwaterfoot and the 3 star BW Kinloch Hotel about 4.15. 7 Days/6 Nights Half Board 9th July £479 The rolling hills and attractive coastlines of Ayrshire combine the first part of our tour with visiting some of the better known locations. We have a couple of lesser known and stunning visits on this tour. We then move on the beautiful Isle of Arran, known as Scotland in Miniature, because it has everything that mainland Scotland has to offer, mountains, quiet deserted beaches, dramatic views, superb castles, lochs and glens, wild life such as deer, seals, and eagles, and wonderful sunsets.

ITINERARY Day 1: A prompt start, we journey north stopping for coffee served on the coach. We travel on into Dumfries & Galloway with a suitable lunch stop (on board) en-route. After lunch we head north past Drumlanrig Castle into Ayrshire and our hotel, the Menzies at Irvine where we spend the next three nights.

Day 5: We travel over the string road with stunning views of Goat Fell and on to Brodick to visit Brodick Castle allowing 2 hours afterwards to travel through the attractive countryside to Lochranza there we visit the distillery Aand have a light lunch which is included in the price. From here we have a short stop at Lochranza Castle in the village before we follow the coast road around the north of the island. We stop at many places along the way, arriving back at the Kinloch around 4.30.

Day 2 : Today is one of the highlights of this tour, a visit to Dumfries House. This beautiful property near Cumnock is the collection that Prince Charles was involved with. We arrive around 11am starting with a guided tour of this stunning property and ending with a soup and sandwich lunch, all included in the tour price. Afterwards we have a little time on the estate before we return to the hotel for about 4.30pm.

Day 6: A full day at leisure today - maybe walk to the craft centre or along the beach seal spotting. You will be able to get lunch in the hotel.

Day 3 : We start our day by driving to Brig O Doon made famous by Rabbie Burns, allowing time for photographs , afterwards we head over the Heads of Ayr to Dunure where we park on the front with excellent sea views. Time to explore before lunch on board. After lunch we travel to Ayr for a couple of hours shopping and sightseeing then we return to the hotel.

Day 7: Today it’s back to normality as we travel back to the mainland on the 8.20am ferry. We then make our way through Dumfries & Galloway with picturesque views all the way. We take a break for lunch served on board the coach at Dumfries then head south again arriving in our area about 6pm.

Held on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle it includes the world famous massed pipes and drums display, and is becoming so popular that cruise ships are now calling at Leith so their passengers can visit the event.

ITINERARY Day 1: We travel north and stop at Moffat for lunch, then carry on via the Devils Beef Tub and the Glens to enter the city by the south eastern route. Bridgewater Guy Fawkes Illuminated Carnival 3 Days/2 Nights Half Board 1st November £129 The Guy Fawkes Carnival - there is nothing like this in the north of England. The town’s roads are closed to all traffic and the parade begins. There are up to 50 illuminated floats, each one decorated with 1000’s of lights and they all have a different theme. Most will have dancers on board who will be dressed to suit the theme of the cart. These ‘carts’ are built by volunteers and cost thousands of pounds.

Bridgewater is one of a number of parades which raise as much money as possible for charities. The parade takes about 90 minutes to pass any point, you will be amazed at the warmth that radiates from them as they pass you by, and to make it easy for you we include grandstand seats which are covered to protect you from the weather.

ITINERARY Day 1 : After our door to door pick ups we head south to Weston Super Mare where we arrive in time for a late lunch and enough time to explore before heading to our hotel in the famous town of Street. The evening is at leisure Date 2 : We start today with a visit to the City of Wells, little more than a large village but gets it’s city status from it’s Cathedral. We return in the afternoon for a little time at the shopping village in Street. We have an early dinner tonight to allow plenty of time to get to Bridgewater and find our seats for the Carnival. After lunch there is time to unwind before meeting in the Embassy Ballroom for drinks and a bit of fun guessing the weight of the Christmas cake. Christmas Day: After breakfast Father Christmas visits with presents and then a fun treasure trail. A traditional Christmas Day lunch will be served before 1pm with entertainment to follow. For the evening meal we enjoy the Chef’s candlelit buffet followed by dancing & music.

Dumfries and Galloway is a huge pretty area of South West Scotland with beautiful scenery at every turn.

Day 1: After our door to door pick ups we head north stopping for coffee along the way, then we cross the border and head into the Old Blacksmith shop for lunch, (and just in case anyone needs to get married). We then travel on to The Cairndale and check in about 3pm. Day 4 : Sadly we leave the The Cairndale and set off back into England.

Day 4: Early morning departure towards Paris. Dutch Bulbfields 4th April 6 Days/5 Nights Half Board £375 On our annual visit to the bulbfields, we can never guarantee that the fields will be full of flowers but we have always been lucky and can be sure that Keukenhof gardens will be top quality as usual.

ITINERARY Day 1: We start our tour by motoring to York where we will have an extended stay for sightseeing and lunch. We depart about 4pm and head to the port of Hull to board our overnight ferry to Rotterdam. We don’t include meals on board. There is so much to do on board from the showbar to the gaming tables.

Day 2: We arrive in Rotterdam at 8.30am. We travel through the huge port and north to Keukenhof gardens (admission is included in the tour price). Keukenhof was founded in 1949 by the mayor of Lisse. Departing at 4.30pm we head to our hotel at Dordrecht. Tonights dinner will be a fixed meal.

Day 3: Breakfast. Today we travel north with views of the many canals and waterways calling at a family cheese farm. We spend time here and are shown how the family makes cheese. Afterwards we travel on to Volendam, a traditional town full of characte. You can admire the attractive little house and explore the pretty shops. We depart about 4pm for our journey back to the hotel.

Day 4 : We have a drive through some of the pretty flower fields today and may see some harvesting of flowers. We will try to stop a bulb seller and find a bargain before we arrive in the sea side town of Noordwijk. Time to take a stroll along the beach and find some lunch. We arrive back at Dordrecht about 5pm.

Day 5: Our day starts with a visit to Delft, a pretty small town built around the canal system and the home of the famous pottery. In the afternoon we visit Scheveningen, the Hague’s pretty sea front town. From here on to the port of Rotterdam for our overnight sailing to Hull.

Day 6: The ship arrives in port around 8am. After we unload we start our journey home calling in Harrogate for a two hour stay.

Ostend at Anchor 19th May 7 Days/6 Nights Half Board £395 These days this lively Belgian North Sea resort and port boasts beautiful sandy beaches, an attractive esplanade and much, much more. Ostend provides everything from a leisurely stroll along a sunny esplanade to the opportunity to browse department stores and small boutiques if the weather is less kindly. But it is also ideally situated for visits to famous first world war sites and that broodingly romantic Venice of the north, Bruges.

ITINERARY Day 1 : We make an early start for the easy journey to Folkestone with two stops en route. We then take an early afternoon shuttle to Calais. The journey through the tunnel takes just 35 minutes, we then make the short journey to Ostend by autoroute arriving at our hotel in time for dinner.

Evening is at leisure.

Day 2: After breakfast we depart for the Medieval City of Bruges, often called ‘The Venice of the North’ and famous for its lace & chocolate. We allow 3 hours here to explore, the best way being by horse and carriage from the main square, or try the boat which takes about 40 minutes. Both excursions take in most of the famous sights. We depart at 1pm and take you to the delightful Dutch Village of Sluis where you are at leisure till 4.30pm. There is plenty to see and do at this lovely attraction, you can visit the famous DeBrak Corn Mill or hunt for a bargain in the many attractive shops. Don’t forget to try the famous waffles and pancakes. We return to the Royal Astor in time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 3 : A Full day to Antwerp, we make any early start at 8.45 am to allow plenty of time to explore this historic city, its magnificent Cathedral, well preserved old town and thriving new city shopping. It is also the diamond centre of Europe with more diamonds cut and polished here than Amsterdam. We leave at 3.30 pm and use the fast E17 motorway back to Ostend giving you time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 4 : We depart at 10am and take you to the small market town of Verne where there will be time to explore.

We depart here early afternoon and head to Dunkirk where you can visit Beaches Memorial, here we will have a packed lunch with wine. Departing about 3pm we head towards Ypres (leper) for the ‘Last Post’ ceremony. We will stop along the way to view some reconstructed sites. We arrive about 4.30pm allowing time to find your evening meals, we can recommend places for you. We gather at the Menin Gate about 7.45pm where the Last Post takes place each evening at 8pm and still draws large numbers.

After the ceremony we return to Ostend.

Day 5 : Day at leisure in Ostend. There is the famous market till lunch with many bargains for the early shopper.

Ostend is known as the Queen of Belgium and the resort is often visited by the Belgian Royal Family. The main shopping streets have something for everyone, there is even a famous fish market with the Flemish speciality of hot whelks! We recommend a visit to the Cathedral of Petrus-Paulus to see its wonderful stained glass windows.

Today the ships start arriving and the harbour becomes the centre attraction until late evening.

Day 6 : Today is Ostend At Anchor Day with all things nautical. Shrimping Smacks from England, Steam Tug Boats, Tall Ships from Russia, a great day of leisure and plenty to keep you interested all day in and around the harbour.

Day 7 : We leave Ostend today making a start at 7.30 am.

We travel back to Calais for the shuttle to Folkestone and our onward journey to the North West.

Day 1: We journey to Hull for overnight cruise ferry to the Continent. Low berth cabins are included but NO meals making suitable stops along the way.

Day 7: We start today with a visit to Rattenberg. Time to explore this interesting 'City' before we travel on to Jenbach and board the cog railway up the mountain to Achensee. The rail fare is included - this is a superb ride on the 120 year old railway and not to be missed.

Day 8: We return to our hotel in Germany taking in some interesting stops along the way.

Day 7: A full day to Verona. Well known as the setting for the story of Romeo and Juliet, historic Verona is a tangle of its stories past and modern. One of the most powerful cities during the early rule of the Roman Empire, the old city of Verona is one of the bestpreserved sections in the country. It is one of the main tourist destinations in northern Italy, thanks to its artistic heritage. The ancient amphitheatre was built by the Romans. Visiting coaches are not allowed to tour the city so one of the best ways to see as much as you can in half a day is to take the 2 hr guided open top bus tour.

Day 8: Sadly we leave our hosts at The Park Hotel and head back to the Germany for our overnight hotel with suitable stops along the way.

Day 9: From Stuttgart area we head north crossing through Holland to Rotterdam and our cruise ferry to Hull.

Day 10: Arriving at hull at 8.30 we leave the Ship and head home with a short stop in Skipton.

It is at this time of the year that the new seasons wines are introduced to everyone and with many celebrations along The Rhine, we think, that this one is the best if not outstanding tours, so come and join us to stay at Boppards excellent hotel.

ITINERARY Day 1 : After our door step pickups we head off to The City of York for an extended lunch break. We depart here around 4.00pm and motor to Hull where we join our overnight cruise ferry to Rotterdam. We have also included dinner and breakfast on both crossings. Entertainment on board starts around 8pm and finishes in the early hours.

Day 2: We arrive in Rotterdam and disembark around 8.45am and travel via the autobahns to Boppard with suitable stops along the way. We check in at The Belle Vue and the rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 3: Today is Winefest. We spend the early part of the day relaxing in Boppard. There are many cafe's where you can buy lunch. We are scheduled to join our cruise boat at 5.30pm. The excursion normally lasts about 5 to 6 hours during which we will have a single course Rustic Dinner on board. The ship has full facilities and a bar on board where you can purchase extra food, teas and beer. The ship cruises through the centre of the celebrations giving excellent views. We return to Boppard late evening and the ship docks very close to the Belle Vue Hotel. There is no dinner in the hotel tonight.

September 5th At festival time in the streets of Wigan's Twin Town turn into a stage. There is some much going on it will keep you going for two full days, but it’s a great pity to travel to the beautiful part of France and not take in the countryside around Angers so we have extended the tour by a couple of days to take The Loire Valley and maybe one of its fine Châteaux.

We hope to complete very shortly.

Day 4: We spend our day exploring some of the Rhine Valley. We start at The Loreley to view the rock where myth tells you about the fair maiden who lured sailors to their death on the rock below. From here we travel through the attractive valleys to view Nederwald Memorial before heading down to Rudesheim, a pretty town on the River Rhein that is famous for its narrow streets filled with shops and often has bands playing. Our stay normally last a couple of hours then wee return to Boppard along the river bank viewing many of the castles along the way.

Day 5 : Sadly we say goodbye to Boppard and start our journey to Rotterdam. Depending upon traffic we will be stopping off the autobahn for lunch and sightseeing. We then travel on to Europort for our overnight crossing to Hull. Again this includes dinner and breakfast and cabins with side by side beds.

Day 6: Leaving the ship at around 9am we have a pleasant drive home arriving in our area mid afternoon.

Booking Conditions 1. YOU PAY A DEPOSIT When you make your booking you must pay a deposit of: a) £40.00 per person on all fully inclusive coaching holidays whether they be UK. Europe is normally £80. b) 15% of the cost of the holiday per person on all Fred Olsen cruises. Deposits for cruises cannot be transferred. C) £150.00 per person for all Channel Islands holidays including Jersey, Sark and Hero. All deposits are non-refundable and cannot be transferred. All money paid to your Travel Agent is held by them on your behalf until you receive our confirmation.

2. YOU PAY THE BALANCE The balance of the fare must be paid at least 6 weeks before the holiday departure (this may differ for cruise and by air/ flight inclusive holiday tours). The departure and balance due dates are both shown on your holiday confirmation and invoice. If the balance is not paid in time we reserve the right to cancel your holiday, retain your deposit and apply cancellation charges as set out in paragraph 4. If you book within 6 weeks of the departure date the full holiday cost most be made at the time of booking.

3. IF YOU CHANGE YOUR BOOKING If, after our confirmation has been issued, you wish to change to another of our holidays or change departure date we will do our utmost to make the changes, provided that written notification is received at our offices from either your Travel Agent or from the person who made the booking not later than the date on which the balance of the original holiday cost was due for payment. This must be accompanied by a payment of £10.00 to cover administration costs. Any alterations within 6 weeks of departure will be treated as a cancellation of the original booking and will be subject to the cancellation charges set out below. Excluding all Channel Islands, cruise and air/flight holidays (see 1 b & c above).

Other alterations such as the addition of requests or change of pick up point that require a re-confirmation to be issued must be notified and accompanied by a payment of £10.00 to cover administration costs.

4. IF YOU CANCEL YOUR HOLIDAY You, or any members of your party, may cancel your holiday at any time provided that the cancellation is made by the person who made the booking, wherever possible, and is communicated to us in writing. As this incurs administrative costs we will apply cancellation charges up to the maximum shown below.

5. IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT : If you have a complaint during your hdiday, please inform our driver/courier who will do his or her best to resolve the problem there and then. If the matter cannot be put right on the spot, you must notify us in writing within 12 days of the competition of your holiday and this must be sent to our office in Warrington and you must quote your holiday booking reference number, departure date and destination.

6. STATUTORY AUTHORITIES This brochure is issued subject to the applicable Acts of Parliament and Government Regulations and the company reserves the right to modify itineraries to conform with requests from the competent authorities in the United Kingdom and any other sovereign state through which the tours run.

7. CONDITIONS OF CARRIAGE When you travel on an aircraft, train or ship the conditions of carriage of that carrier apply and are subject to National and International conditions which may limit or exclude liability.

Your contract made under the terms of this Fair Trading Agreement is subject to English Laws and jurisdictions. The Public Service Vehicle (Conduct of Drivers, Conductors and Passengers) Regulations as amended 1990, apply to all coaches throughout any holiday in the U.K. Please note that in exceptional circumstances, we reserve the right to refuse travel to any passenger or group of passengers travelling on any of our coach tours.

8. OTHER TERMS On a holiday, passengers may not, a) bring a pet or any other animal (other than Guide Dogs in the U.K by arrangement) or b) play a radio or cassette/cd player without earphones on a coach. You are responsible for ensuring that you are ready for the taxi at least 10 minutes before your allocated pick-up time. Memory Lane Coaches reserves the unconditionnal right to refuse a booking or terminate a client’s ho iday in the event of unreasonable conduct which in Memory Lane Coaches opinion is likely to cause damage, distress or annoyance to other clients, employees, property or to a third party. If you are prevented from travelling or continuing your holiday by such a termination, Memory Lane’s responsibility for your holiday thereupon ceases. Full cancellation charges will apply and Memory Lane Coaches will be under no obligation to offer any refund, compensation or loss which you may incur. Excursions are included in the price of our holidays and refunds cannot be made for passengers not wishing to go on these excursions. Admission fees/fares to attractions, buildings, grounds, boat/train rides, etc, are not included in the price of the holiday unless otherwise stated in the brochure under “PRICE INCLUDES” of any particular holiday.

9. PASSPORTS For all continental holidays you will require a full 10 year British Passport, If you have any doubt about your status as a resident British subject you must check with the Embassies or Consulates of the countries to be visited to confirm Visa requirements needed in your particular circumstances We cannot accept responsibility if passengers are not in possession of the correct travel documentation.

10. HEALTH Under normal circumstances most Western European Countries do not require visitors to be vaccinated. However, we will inform you of any known vaccination or health requirements of the country you are visiting. You are advised to check with your own doctor before travelling. It is your responsibility to ensure you carry with you at all times whilst on tour outside of the UK, your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card).

11. SPECIAL DIETS or REQUESTS If you require a special diet you must notify us at the time of booking with a copy of the diet. This will be notified to the hotel or hotels concerned. Whilst every effort is made to comply with your wishes we cannot guarantee that hotels are able to provide the requested facility or that special diets or requests will be adhered to, unless a separate specific supplement for that request has been paid.

12. ITINERARIES and EXCURSIONS Every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary or excursions advertised in the brochure but they could be subject to change. We may need to make minor alterations and if we do, customers booked on to that particular tour will be informed as soon as possible.

13. LOST or DAMAGED PROPERTY Please remember to check your bedrooms before leaving to make sure you have not left anything behind. It is difficult to retrieve lost property, particularly from overseas tours.

Passengers are responsible for ensuring that their luggage is loaded on to the coach. The driver is there to assist only.

If the luggage is left behind, under no circumstances is it the responsibility of the company. Any damage to suitcases during transit in the locker/boot of our coaches is not the responsibility of Memory Lane as long as reasonable care has been taken in loading/unloading.

Our Promise to You 1. WE RESERVE YOUR HOLIDAY : When you have ascertained or your travel agent has provisionally confirmed that we have available space on the holiday of your choice, a deposit will be required from you. A confirmation invoice will be forwarded to you within 14 days of receipt of your deposit and the contract is made between us when you receive this confirmation. In the event that a holiday was sold through any travel agent who defaulted, we will guarantee your holiday on production of adequate documentation to establish sale.

2. YOUR HOLIDAY PRICE U.K. HOLIDAYS : The price of your holiday is not guaranteed and may be subject to surcharges which may include higher than inflation fuel increases and those resulting from government action, including additional bonding or licensing requirements and increases in VAT. In these cases we reserve the right to pass these amounts on in full. Holiday prices include all coach travel, hotel accommodation and meals as specified in the holiday description and VAT at the current rate where applicable. Morning coffee, afternoon tea and other refreshments are not included, unless otherwise stated.

Some hotels may make a small charge for tea and coffee after dinner and gratuities to the hotel staff and driver/courier are discretionary.

IRISH and CONTINENTAL HOLIDAYS The price of your holiday is subject to surcharges on the following items: higher than inflation fuel increases, currency fluctuations, governmental action, increases in VAT, currency, airrcraft fuel increases, overflying charges, airport charges and an increase in air fares. Even in this case, we will absorb an amount equivalent to 2% of the holiday price which excludes insurance premiums and any amendment charges.

Only amounts in excess of this 2% will be surcharged but where a surcharge is payable there will be an administration charge of £1.00 together with any relevant amount to cover agents commission. Revised charges in respect of changes to any given variable will be calculated by taking the total change the variable element concerned in relation to each passenger. This amount will then be added to or deducted from the original holiday price exclusive of VAT. The revised VAT will then be added to the new VAT exclusive price to arrive at the revised VAT inclusive price. If this means paying more than 10% on the holiday price, you will be entitled to cancel your holiday with a full refund of all money paid except for any premium paid to us for holiday insurance and amendment charges. Should you decide to cancel because of this, you must exercise your right to do so within 14 days from the issue date printed on the invoice.

3. IF WE CHANGE YOUR HOLIDAY : The arrangements for holidays in this brochure are made many months in advance and changes are sometimes unavoidable. Most of these changes are likely to be minor and we or our representatives will endeavour to keep you informed. However, where before departure we have to alter significantly an essential term of this contract, such as price, location of resort, quality of main hotel (not including single overnight hotels on touring holidays) or tour itinerary changes involving destinations being eliminated, we will notify you of the change as soon as possible. In such circumstances you will be given the following options: a) to accept changes to contract as set out in a rider to it specifying the changes and their impact (if any) on the price or, b) to take a substitute holiday of equivalent price or superior quality if we are able to offer you one and pay us the difference (if any) between the price of the original holiday and that of the substitute, or

c) to take a substitute holiday of lower quality if we are able to offer you one and to recover from us the difference between the original holiday and that of the substitute, or, d) to have repaid you as soon as possible all the monies paid by you under this contract.

If you choose a), b) or c) we will pay you compensation on the scales shown below, If you choose d), we will refund all monies paid to you, plus compensation on the scales shown below - no other claims for compensation or expenses will be considered. 4. IF WE CANCEL YOUR HOLIDAY : It is necessary for there to be a minimum number of passengers in order to operate any tour. If this minimum number is not achieved before the balance due date, the tour could be cancelled. In certain circumstances, therefore, we may have to cancel your holiday, and if this should occur we will return to you alI the money you have paid to us, or offer you a suitable alternative.

However, we will not cancel your holiday, immediately prior to the departure date unless you have not paid for your holiday in full. If we have to cancel your holiday at any time, Memory Lane Coaches is liable only for any money you may have paid to Memory Lane Coaches at the time of cancellation and for the compensation payments as detailed in paragraph 3 above.

5. OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO YOU : We accept responsibility for ensuring that all component parts of your holiday as described in this brochure are supplied to you at a reasonable standard and this includes optional excursions purchased through our employees or agents. If any such part is not provided in the advertised manner we will pay you reasonable compensation unless the non-provision was due to circumstances which we could not predict and were beyond our control, such as adverse weather, road or traffic conditions. i) Please remember that some amenities, e.g. hotel lifts, swimming pools, saunas, etc, require servicing and cleaning and therefore may not be available at all times. Some service may be affected by weather conditions and their availability is entirely at the discretion of the provider. Entertainment (particularly live entertainment) provided by the hotels is frequently subject to demand and may be cancelled if there are insufficient numbers attending such events or staying at the hotel. ii) Some excursion itineraries include the use of ferries and other forms of transport, which can be affected by inclement weather and may have to be cancelled or arrangements changed. Wherever possible a suitable alternative will be offered. iii) The published running times of services are estimates only and we will not be liable for any loss (howsoever caused) arising from the delay or failure to operate in accordance with published timings.

Holiday Travel Insurance A special Holiday Travel Insurance Scheme is available for all passengers travelling on our holidays, which is arranged with ETI - International Travel Protection (the UK branch of Europaische Reiseverscherung AG) who are licenced by the Bundesanstalt fur Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BAFIN - www.bafin.de) and approved by the Financial Services Authority (FSA - www.fsa.gov.uk) to undertake insurance business in the UK. Should you wish to take advantage of our Holiday Travel Insurance please include and pay for the appropriate premium when booking your holiday.

In addition if you are travelling outside England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the following additional conditions will apply: You must notify the Issuer of this policy immediately of any of the conditions listed below arising between the date the policy is issued and the time of departure of the trip. We must be informed of any fact, which is likely to influence us in the acceptance, assessment or continuance of this insurance.

Failure to do so may invalidate this insurance, leaving you with no right to make a claim.

1) If you have received medical treatment as a hospital day case, in-patient or out-patient during the six months prior to the booking of the trip, you must obtain from a medical practitioner at your cost confirmation that you will be fit enough to take the trip 2) If you are undergoing medical treatment as a hospital out-patient at the date the final balance of the trip is due to be paid, a certificate of fitness confirming your ability to travel must be obtained by you at your cost.
