Adjustable beds are simply a must have in the bedroom as they offer superior comfort for just about everyone, whether sleeping, talking on the phone, watching TV, playing Sudoku or just having a well-deserved afternoon nap.
There are two parts to an adjustable bed; the first part is the base and the mechanics, the second is the mattress and if you are considering buying an adjustable then this will undoubtedly help you to choose and buy the perfect bed. Adjustable bed features First off before you get into buying a bed remember that you spend around a third of your life in it so try them out before buying from a retailer rather than trusting a web image. The adjustable beds at Lefton’s are made in the UK to the highest quality standards, come with manufacturer’s warranties for peace of mind, and are fitted with good quality, smooth and quiet motors. The team is more than happy for you to test out the beds in store to make sure the bed is just right for you. We’ve got mattress protectors on all the beds, so take your time, relax and try them out.
Electronic controls Most controls are now electronic and with a simple to use remote control pad. With upto five fold actions on some beds you can create the exact positioning you want and can even look at going up the luxury stakes with the addition of a massage function to your bed and electronic control.
Bed guards Most adjustable beds are designed to allow for grab or cot rails to be fitted. These are wonderful additions for those who have restless nights sleep and have found themselves outside the bed on occasions or indeed are just as useful for assiting you into and out of bed safely.
Frames The most popular frames are divan bases which are available with or without base drawers or you have the shallow divan based on legs, which gives a more Scandinavian feel to the room plus lots of space underneath to hide away those storage boxes. The key to a good frame is a base with slats made from good quality, well treated solid wood.
Mattresses There are countless mattresses to choose from and by far and away the best way to work out which is for you is by trying them out find the best fit for you. This is especially so if you’re going to use them on an adjustable bed but not all mattresses can be used on an adjustable bed so these are the ones to look out for.
Pocket spring – a pocket spring mattress has individual springs housed in their own little pockets of material so that the springs work independently of each other to respond better to your body shape giving support in the right places. Great for a superior night’s sleep and perfect for
couples with weight variations or differing sleep patterns. More expensive mattresses make use of natural fillings, hand stitching and a bigger spring count.
Latex – a popular choice offering great levels of support and comfort and are available as a pure latex ‘block’ or as a ‘combination’ mattress, building a layer of latex onto an open coil or pocket sprung mattress for a smoother flatter feel, moulding to you as you sleep and smoothing out once you’re out of bed. Latex is a natural product, hypoallergenic and usually has anti-microbial properties. Memory foam – there’s been lots of talk about this NASA developed product for years and it’s the Marmite of the bed world – you either love it or hate it! Memory foam has a fairly unique cell structure that reacts to pressure and heat to contour your body as it warms from your body heat; offering a superior posture aligned sleep - perfect for relieving pressure points and preventing pressure sores and offer multiple orthopaedic and other health benefits. Reflex – are filler free mattresses and are in fact foam filled with lots of bubbles which respond to pressure, squashing sideway as you lie down and returning back to the same position once you get up. They are also usually ribbed to work in harmony with your body. Reflex mattresses offer outstanding levels of quality and performance, shape retention and long term durability. With adjustable beds be sure to road test them properly. At Lefton’s you’ll get a full demonstration in store and you’ll be encouraged by one of or fully trained team to try out the beds and controls for yourself. We have a great selection on the showroom floor with free parking, free delivery and free installation of your new bed. No other store offers as much as Lefton’s!

As the New Year gets underway you might be turning your thoughts to making resolutions. Whether you’re giving something up or making a few lifestyle changes, New Year is the time to get into goods habits with your money matters too. To help keep you motivated, the Financial Ombudsman Service gives us their top tips for 2014:
Set a spending budget: If you’re taking up an activity or
joining a new class it will inevitably cost you some money. Set yourself a weekly or monthly budget and stick to it to make sure you’re not overstretching yourself. If you need equipment – like swimming gear – look online for discount vouchers as it could save you a fortune.
Set a savings budget: If you’re giving up a bad habit why not
use the spare funds to boost your savings. Small changes like quitting smoking or ditching that weekly takeaway could add over £1,000 a year to your savings pot. Shop around for the best savings plan or ISA to store your new found funds in but don’t be drawn in by high introductory interest rates – you may find you lose out if the rate decreases after a few months.
19
Clear out the clutter: Taking stock of your accounts can make
managing your money much easier. Ask your bank for a list of your existing direct debits and standing orders. If you’re paying for things you don’t recognise or use, consider cancelling them – but tell the business involved first. Having separate savings and spending accounts can be helpful if you’re trying to avoid the temptation of dipping into your rainy day funds.
Out with the old: You wouldn’t pay more than is necessary
for an item in a shop so why do we pay more than we need for our insurance? A lot of policies will automatically renew after 12 months – but they may not always offer you the best price. Taking the time to shop around for the best deals before you decide whether or not to renew can save you a fortune in the long-run.
Pursue an interest: Interest rates on credit cards can change, so it’s worth reviewing your current rate – you might find that there is a better offer available. These can range from shortterm zero interest deals to fixed interest rates for the life of the balance. Compare offers on accounts and you might find a better rate for your savings. Face your fears: If you think that you’re going to go overdrawn, have an insurance claim or are struggling to meet your repayments talk to your bank or insurer as soon as possible. Burying your head in the sand can only make things worse. Tell them about the situation – they might be able to help you sort things out. If you’ve made a complaint and are still unhappy, the ombudsman service might be able to help on www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk or find us on twitter @financialombuds.

Mobile moments of madness
There have been moments recently when I have been sorely tempted to launch my mobile telephone into orbit, pre-programmed to crash to earth on Richard Branson’s head. Since the beginning of the year my signal from the Virgin network had been gradually worsening often to the point where using a carrier pigeon would have been more effective. Of course the first line of defence for all mobile phone companies are the foreign call centres where everyone is called Godfrey or Marion and you know they’ve never been called that in their life. They’re irritatingly polite and heavily scripted on how to deal with awkward customers going ballistic down the phone and threatening to do all manner of unspeakable things. “Oh we’re very sorry for the inconvenience Mr Graham,” trilled
one after 45 minutes on the helpline which was the cut off, probably because a passing pigeon had blocked the one bar of signal which I was using. They want you to give in and go away don’t they? “Oh we’ll be giving you another 3,000 texts as compensation Mr Graham, isn’t that wonderful?” No! I want to speak to someone not write everything in text, I replied, quietly steaming and thinking of what I’d like to do with the operator’s headset. Many calls later I was allowed permission to speak to the technical department and, amazingly, I actually understood what he was saying. Virgin had decommissioned a mast close to our area and the signal was weakened because of it and there were no plans to recommission it in the future. Oh
Spreading the news A North Shields man loves Marmite so much that he’s changed his surname by deed poll to match the yeast spread.
Mr Marmite, 38, says he easily gets through a jar a week and also collects Marmite paraphernalia including limited edition jars, cufflinks and a recipe book dating back to the Second World War.
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
I was in a quandary about who to go to for service, or should I revert back to the two syrup tins and a length of string which had been so effective in my youth? And cheaper. I settled for Talk Talk but for three days that was precisely what I couldn’t do, talk, until numbers had been ported, sims transferred and I had to threaten to separate at least three help line operators from their important bits. My wife opted for a package with one of those tablet come Kindly wotsit gadgets. It’s amazing the stuff they have now, even a phone that reacts when you look at it. I’m hanging on until they have one which soothes you when you can’t make a phone call, brews tea and makes a bacon sandwich. Sorry, just having another moment of mobile madness!
Tyred of wasted money It seems to me that an incredible amount of money is wasted on rather useless items, many in the name of education.
Saire May - now Marmite - made the leap to show his ‘devotion and passion’ to the dark brown paste. “I’m not exactly sure how old I was when I first tried Marmite, but I just remember eating it as far back as I can remember,” he said. “I like the smell, the taste, the texture. I think I pretty much like everything about it.”
nice, I live high on the Yorkshire moors and Graham Smith would have thought there Twitter Column was plenty of room for a new mast, but no, said the technical man. I was put through to the public relations department and a very polite chap confirmed that my signal would not improve and I was free to leave Virgin without penalty!
Our local school has just unveiled a “tyre park” which has cost a staggering £10,000. Now how many swimming lessons or creative activities could that money have bought instead of dumping a pile of old painted tyres for pupils to clamber across? “My family think I’m mad. However my mum just shrugged her shoulders, she expects this kind of thing from me,” he added. It’s the sort of silly idea which could spread.
In my schooldays we were quite happy with a playground area where we fashioned wickets from a dustbin, chalked goalposts on the wall and if anyone had dumped a load of old tyres there we’d have thrown them out. Progress? 5

fascinating funeral monuments, it is these on the Dalyan Delta that are considered the most imposing and awe-inspiring tombs of the ancient region. At night time the tombs are lit up creating a dramatic, atmospheric backdrop to the delta which can be seen for miles. Caunos itself is another fascinating attraction. The largest ancient city in the Carian era, it was constructed, according to Greek mythology, by Apollo’s grandson. Those who visit these iconic ruins can discover remains of many different parts of the old city which were uncovered during an excavation, from the ancient amphitheatre to the traditional Hellenistic and Roman temples, to name a few. Further eastwards, Kalkan lies at the heart of some of the most impressive Lycian sites. Xanthos was a site of exceptional importance in antiquity as it is thought to have been a main centre for culture and commerce. Extensive excavations and research of the area have led to the discovery of a selection of texts in the Lycian

The British Museum now houses two tombs, the Nereid monument and the Tomb of Payava, both of which were discovered at the ruins. Another tomb, known as the Harpy Tomb, is still located at the remains of the city. Only 4kms south of Xanthos, positioned on the banks of the Xanthos River, is one of the most important religious centres in the region – Letoon – where the foundations of temples can be seen. A further remain – the ancient city of Patara – can also be found in this historically rich region. Excavated in the 1980s, a magnificent Roman arch can be admired, as well as an impressive theatre. Once a prosperous

commercial city, the ruins are positioned just a short distance from Patara Beach – one of the most photographed beaches in the Mediterranean. There are also a number of other smaller sites and one of the more interesting and unusual ones is nearby Kekova which is home to the semi-sunken city of Simena. Originally a fishing village, a 2nd century earthquake had devastating effects on Simena – however it left behind an exceptional historical site. Half of the ancient houses have become submerged, with staircases leading down underwater, where the foundations of the buildings and an old harbour can be found. In 1990, this region was declared a protected area, prohibiting swimming and diving. Further north and on its own peninsula lies the unspoilt rural region of Bozburun, yet another area which is home to other interesting historical settlements located in ancient Caria. From here, you can explore the ancient Greek settlement of Knidos, located just a short drive away on the nearby Datça Peninsula, a ruin that is built partly on the mainland and partly on the Island of Triopion which, in antiquity, was connected to the mainland by a bridge.

INTERVIEW: GLORIA HUNNIFORD
Gloria Hunniford talks of the early days, health & more... By Angela Kelly
Gloria Hunniford was just enjoying a few weeks near Nice in France with her husband when we chatted. It marked a particularly busy time when she had been filming more programmes for the TV hit series Ripoff Britain, which had been extended 10
to cover rip-offs on holidays and on food. And Ms Hunniford, now a lovely 73 year-old with the beautiful skin and enduring looks typical of Irish people, always tries to look after herself. “You need to keep balance, avoid being thrown off kilter,” she explains. “It’s very easy when you’re busy but I do try to take holidays and eat and sleep properly.” She’s also a great fan of vitamins, which she takes each day, and admits
to “a certain amount of exercise”, usually walking the dogs or using her exercise bike in front of the TV. “I’ve just lost two stone, though,” she states. “It wasn’t a vanity thing – my sister was diagnosed with diabetes and I asked the doctor what I should do to avoid it. Losing weight seemed a sensible idea so I cut out both sugar and carbohydrates and the weight just dropped off.” It feels like the popular broadcaster has always been with us. Radio and TV audiences love her, and Gloria has the enduring charm that people of all ages and both sexes find attractive and easygoing. I once stood next to her in an aiport queue as she took a flight to her native Ireland and her fellow travellers were plainly fascinated by the VIP in their
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
midst, but also very warm to her. She was named after the actress Gloria Swanson but early on she became a singer, entertaining at her dad’s concerts. He was a newspaper man by day and a magician by night. She spent time in Canada, singing on TV and performing listeners’ Irish song requests on the radio, then returned home where she joined ITV’s new Ulster Television as a production assistant. She continued her singing, though, and got a record in the Ulster charts in 1969. After she was interviewed on BBC radio, the producer asked her to audition as an interviewer, then hired her for Northern Ireland’s equivalent of the Today programme. She cut her teeth on news and current affairs, moved on to a nightly news programme and finally ended up invited to work in London. Here, her friendly Irish accident and warm manner quickly won over fans. She filled in for Jimmy Young while he was on holiday, and the banter between her and Terry Wogan – whom she already knew – at the end of the programme swiftly enhanced her reputation. People felt she was a familiar friend on the air. She was given her own show, Gloria Hunniford’s Open House, and was a daily TV fixture for five years. She still makes appearances on The One Show and became a regular once more on our screens with another very popular series Cash in the Attic, which she loves. “They’ve got about 20 programmes already made but they’ve also now launched an interactive website and an app which is all very exciting because you can go onto the site anytime you want to, anywhere,” she says enthusiastically. “I love that programme – I’m a great fan of antiques and I’ve collected them myself for years. I collected so many angels and cherubs one of my sons forbade me to bring any more home!
And I’ve also collected teapots and jewellery crosses.” She loves the surprises that people get when items they discover go to auction, and thoroughly enjoys the celebrity version. “I’m always amazed at how generous the celebrities are in donating items that can be sold for charity,” she adds. The Rip-off Britain series is another favourite with her. “I think we came along at just the right time with that brand,” she states. “The recession was just beginning and people felt even more aggrieved if they were being ripped off.” She is proud of the fact that the evening version draws a regular audience of 5.5 million viewers “and the daytime programme has very respectable figures, too,” she asserts. Work is plainly far from drying up for the evergreen presenter but she’s quick to state that she actually wants to work. “I enjoy work, and I’d hope to keep on working for as long as people want me to,” she adds. She and her second husband, Stephen Way, live in Sevenoaks, Kent, and family life is obviously very important to her. Her presenter daughter, Caron Keating, died from breast cancer after a brave fight in 2004 and any parent can start to imagine the personal devastation that brought. “I’ve had loss before, but nothing prepares you for the terrible darkness that descends when a child dies,” says Gloria. “It’s like trying to climb out of a big hole by your fingertips and, just when you think you’re at the top, something drags you back. “I felt like that for a long time, and many of the people who contacted us when Caron died – we had more than 8,000 letters – said it never really goes away.” But one person’s letter did strike a chord with Gloria, and showed the way ahead for her. It was someone who
“ I enjoy work, and I’d hope to keep on working for as long as people want me to” pointed out the importance of carrying Caron’s spirit forward, “I just felt then that I knew what I wanted to do,” she recalls. Gloria founded the Caron Keating Foundation, administered by the family and with all the funds raised being used to help charities concerned with all kinds of cancer. The result is that, over the past years, the foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds which have gone to projects at 47 different cancer charities all around the country. This is obviously a source of some consolation to Gloria and her family, although you suspect that Caron is in her thoughts every day. “Someone said that people never die if they remain on the lips of the living,” she states, “and I believe that.”

Jasmine needs a home as the only dog as she can get a bit grumpy in her old age. She still enjoys long walks as long as she has her cosy coat on to keep her warm she is very popular with the volunteers as she walks very nicely on the lead and is easy to walk she also loves a sprint in the paddock when she’s feeling up to it. IN THE HOME Colours in the living area are so important and have a big impact on the feel of the room and the mood of the people within it. Painting a room is a much quicker and cheaper way of decorating because it is then easier to change and redecorate in the future, without the hassle of removing and replacing wallpaper. If you are looking for a warm and energetic environment, try a red or orange tone. This may not be suitable for those wanting to relax with the family as they are loud colours, but if you are the type of person who likes entertaining, then the warmth will brighten up the vibe of the room. Yellow is the perfect warm colour for livening up your space, but try to keep it to a feature or accent wall. Too much of it can be overpowering. For those folk who want to feel laid back and relaxed, a cooler blue or green room might be more suitable. Do be careful of the shades you pick however. An icy blue may make visitors feel unwelcome. A warmer shade, such as turquoise, may give the desired effect you want, but make others feel more welcome as well. For a more sophisticated feel, stick to neutral tones, whites and creams. Not only do these provide a blank canvas to incorporate furniture and patterns, but allow the room to become a peaceful setting, which looks elegant and refined.
HOW COLOURS CAN CHANGE A ROOM It’s surprising how much the colours and fabrics in a room can vastly improve and change the look of it. Picking a new colour for the walls, or buying a new rug or carpet can mix up the style of your home and make it look brand new. 14
Combinations of fabrics and patterns are also hugely inspiring when it comes to decorating and can create a theme for your house that you may wish to follow; from a cosy cottage to a Tuscan villa. If your tastes cater to soft pastels, floral fabrics and rustic wood furnishings, then a cottage style home may be your cup of tea, where as finding wallpapers with an old plaster texture, tapestry style rugs and cushions with gold, coppers and greens infused can give the feel of Tuscany in your home.
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
You may think that adding a splash of colour to your home will get expensive but that isn’t the case. Paint is a much cheaper option than wallpaper, but how about just repainting and wallpapering one wall in a vibrant colour or pattern to add some variation. If you can’t afford a new sofa or lounge chair, find some new fabric you like and get the existing furniture reupholstered. Wooden furniture is easy to transform too. Take an old chair that needs a make over, or buy a cheap one from a second hand shop. All it needs is sanding down and a coat of paint, to fit whatever mood you are going for in the room, and you have a brand new piece of furniture. The same can be done with tables, cupboards, and fireplaces.
FINAL TIPS... • Fabrics can easily change up a room, don’t be afraid to experiment. • Be aware of light and colours. Warmer light coming into your house allows for cooler colours. With colder light, try a warmer colour.
Carpets are a highly important part of a room. Many people prefer plain, block colour materials on their floors, which are great for flexibility when designing and changing styles. However they can make a large room look empty. Going for a patterned carpet might seem a bit risky, but if the right one is selected, it can make a big difference. Patterns can create a focal point in a big room if you feel like keeping the furniture quite simple, but try and avoid busy patterns in a small room as this can make the space seem closed in and cluttered. Fabric texture is also important. Kristen Schmitt says on Better www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
Homes and Gardens that: “Texture adds dimension to a room. It appeals to our senses, both visual and tactile, which makes the room interesting.” Add some pillows and cushions to your bed and sofa; fluffy, ruffled, floral, tartan, anything that takes your fancy. Even a textured throw for the end of the bed can provide a contrast in a room. Bring in a patterned rug to create a focal point and make small rooms look larger. Round shapes in a square room can also soften the space. Don’t be afraid of contrasting patterns and colours either, but try not to go beyond three and use samples to decide on the best combinations.
• Something as simple as adding a mirror can instantly make a room look bigger. • Patterns are good, but don’t go overboard. • Buy a signature piece of furniture or rug you like and base the colour scheme around that. • Bright ornaments and furniture can look great in an otherwise plain, white room. • You don’t need a massive income to completely change your style.

8. To truly emulate the ‘elite’ style you need to find the original pieces. The technology advances spurred the creation of imitation products made from cheap materials, which led to the eventual end of the era.
TOP TIPS: ART DECO Niki Schäfer shares her tips on creating an Art Deco look: 1. The incredibly glamorous Art Deco period spans from 1920 – 1939 and epitomises the opulence of inter-war Britain. The period was characterised by modern, sleek designs with a luxurious use of materials. The New York’s Chrysler building, The Savoy and Sybil Colefax were icons of this era, look to them for inspiration on a smaller scale! 2. The luxury and decadence was increasingly noticeable in contrast to the austerity of the First World War. The use of rare and exotic woods and materials such as ivory, shagreen (imitation shark skin) and mother of pearl was familiar to this era. Decorate using an excess of mirrors, satins and pale leathers. 3. The Art Deco period was heavily influenced by international style, so perhaps use lacquer as a finish on furniture, a design style developed from China. The period also admired enormously style icons of the era such as Eileen Gray.
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
4. The era was nicknamed the ‘Cocktail Age’ so for true Art Deco style track down walnut cocktail cabinets in a stepped shape, symbolic of the Aztec pyramids that were also hugely popular at the time.
9. Rugs were hugely popular throughout this period. Search for wild geometrical shapes in a spectrum of bold colours to liven up any room. Imitation zebra and other wild animal skins are widely available as fabrics nowadays, and if you’re feeling extra brave use some flocked wallpaper in the same design.
5. Advances in technology moved towards a more ‘streamlined’ look. Every day objects such as radios became streamlined, swayed by the aerodynamic shapes cut from ocean liners and Zeppelins. 6. Choose fringed lighting and fitted furniture to incorporate an Art Deco look into your home without creating an overwhelming look. Try Tiger Moth Lighting for some wonderful fringed metal lamps and pendants. 7. Search for cantilevered chairs made popular by Marcel Breuer and Miles van Der Rohhe, who made the most of technology advances fashioning original and modern styles from new materials. The Barcelona Chair is another popular design choice, still contemporary today and found in many modern homes and offices.
10. If you live and breathe for Art Deco inspired design then take a visit to La Maison de Verre in Paris, or slightly closer to home stay at The Park Lane Hotel and dine in Claridges. 19
Make 2014 Your Year! By Angela Kelly
Most of us treat a New Year in the same way – we mentally list all the things we want to change in the next 12 months …. but then do little about it until the next new year! Well, here’s the chance to make 2014 YOUR year and change all those areas of your life with which you’re unhappy. And that doesn’t necessarily just apply to your home 20
and your job but also the shape you’re in and many of the things you might like to change about yourself if you just could. For a start, are you happy with the shape you’re in? Even the most gorgeous celebrities or top models complain about some element of their bodies, so the rest of us are bound to have a list of “improvements”! Weight is an obvious one. So, if you’ve been promising yourself to drop a few pounds – or a stone or two – join a slimming club now, or put yourself on a good WEIGHTLOSS programme.
Start this journey with a quick visit to your GP, of course, to check that there’s no medical stumbling blocks involved but after that – ready, steady, slim! Complement your shape as the pounds disappear, too, with a new approach to your FITNESS regime. Gym membership these days is generally very economical, especially if you attend regularly, and you’ve got the added bonus of having expert help on hand and being surrounded by like-minded people. Make a gym visit part of your regular routine as a way of ensuring you keep happy and healthy – and trimmer – and you’ll keep that hardwon weight-loss off for good. Perhaps you want to try out a NEW HAIRSTYLE – a fresh, shorter look or a change of colour. Consult your

to support you daily. And the bonus is that you’re in a community of older people also determined to enjoy life!
Consider finally getting your dental work sorted out or having your TEETH WHITENED if you’re unhappy with your smile. It is, after all, often the first thing that people notice about you and there are plenty of excellent treatments around. Your dentist can advise here.
Of course, it may be that you’ve been promising yourself that special HOLIDAY for several years. So, this could well be the time to consider going to Australia or New Zealand, Macau or Malibu. Consult a reliable travel agent for the kind of personal service you’ll need for the trip of a lifetime.
It may be that you would like to ditch those specs and improve your EYESIGHT. Laser surgery has come on remarkably in the last few years, so shop around for the best and most trusted treatment. Certainly, for many of us, our wishlist contains COSMETIC SURGERY for a crooked nose, saggy chin or to get rid of those frown lines. Choose a reputable clinic or salon and give yourself the face or other identified body part you’ve always wanted. This may be the year that you decide to MOVE HOUSE. The housing market is definitely much more buoyant and all the signs are good for getting the home of your dreams. Local estate agents and mortgage advisors are always happy to help you with your personal home possibilities. Or, it could be that you like your current address but want to put in an EXTENSION or CONSERVATORY. A local builder can give you a quote without charge for an extension, and it’s certainly worth talking to an architect about making the most of this planned space first. They’re the experts on coming up with clever plans and utilising extensions in the most practical way to suit your family’s lifestyle. If you go online to see the kinds of extensions and conservatories available, you can mix and match the best of ideas to suit your plans. Your property may just need

Laser surgery has come on remarkably in the last few years, so shop around for the best and most trusted treatment the kind of brightening up that a good DECORATOR can provide. Sometimes, changing the colourscheme and furnishings really cheers up rooms and transforms the home. It may be that you’re at that stage of life when you want to DOWNSIZE, perhaps realise some of the capital in your property. If you’re in those golden years and want tailor-made accommodation, it’s definitely worth considering a retirement village or sheltered accommodation. You may decide that a New Year is just the time to change from struggling along with a large and expensive property to something more suitable and economical. There is a wealth of suitable places these days, including comfortable modern apartments needing the minimum of maintenance, and with staff on-site
It may be that you’ve got a close relative or friend in a far-flung spot that you’d love to visit but never thought you could. Now is just the time to see if this is a possibility, and how it could be achieved. Perhaps you’re determined to finally go to a special SPORTING OCCASION, like the Winter Olympics in Russia in February, the World Twenty20 cricket in Bangladesh in April or the Masters’ golf in Augusta that month. Again, your travel can create a personal travel itinerary that will ensure you realise your dream trip, and enjoy the experience every bit as much as you thought you would. Your New Year Resolutions may be far more modest than any of these, although they may well enhance your life just as much. You may decide that in 2014 you will definitely QUIT SMOKING so take a good look at all the products around to actively help you with this – there’s everything from patches to e-cigarettes these days, hypnotherapists and local health expert support on offer so there’s really no excuse. Or you may have decided to LEARN a musical instrument or a foreign language. All it takes is that initial decision that you’re not going to leave things for another year. You’re not simply going to say “I wish I could ….” You’re actually going to do it!

FOOD & DRINK - LOW FAT WINTER WARMERS
Si King and Dave Myers are self-confessed food lovers. Food isn’t just fuel to them, it’s their life. But like many of us they’ve found that the weight has crept on over the years. Si and Dave have come up with tasty recipes that are low in calories and big in flavour, and many we have featured in 50 Plus Magazine.
OLD FASHIONED CHICKEN AND VEGETABLE STEW
This is real food for real people, not skinny minnies. They are ideas for family meals.
The cider and bacon add a touch of sweetness and extra flavour to the chicken and veg, making this a lovely supper dish. Keep it low-fat by removing the skin from the chicken legs before cooking and using as little oil as possible for browning the meat and vegetables. SERVES 4 3 tbsp plain flour 2 tsp dried thyme 4 chicken leg quarters 2 tbsp sunflower oil 4 rashers of rindless smoked back bacon, cut into 1cm-wide strips 2 medium onions, chopped 2 celery sticks, thinly sliced 150g small chestnut mushrooms, wiped and sliced or quartered if large 500ml bottle of dry cider 300ml chicken stock, (made with 1 chicken stock cube) 2 bay leaves 400g Chantenay or other small fat carrots, trimmed and peeled 2 slender leeks, trimmed and cut into 2cm slices flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper. METHOD Mix the flour and thyme with a good pinch of salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper in a large strong 26
freezer bag. Strip the skin off the chicken legs and put them on a board. Break the joint of each leg by bending it in the opposite direction. You may hear a small crack. Cut each leg quarter in half with a sturdy knife to give 8 chicken portions. Using a good set of kitchen scissors, trim off any visible fat. Put the chicken portions in the freezer bag, a few at a time, and shake well until they are evenly coated in the flour. Heat the oil in a large non-stick fying pan over a medium heat and fry the chicken, a few pieces at a time, until golden brown all over. As they are browned, transfer the chicken pieces to a large flameproof casserole dish. Preheat the oven to 1800C/Fan 1600C/ Gas 4. Put the bacon, onions and celery in the pan used for browning the chicken and fry for 4-5 minutes over medium heat until lightly browned, stirring often.
Add the mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes more, then tip everything into the casserole dish with the chicken pieces. Sprinkle in any flour remaining in the freezer bag and stir well. Pour about half the cider into the frying pan and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon to lift any sediment from the bottom. Simmer for a few seconds, then pour into the casserole. Add the rest of the cider and the stock, then stir in the carrots and bay leaves and bring to a simmer on the hob. Cover with a lid and cook in the centre of the over for 1 hour, then remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the leeks. Pop the dish back into the oven for a further 30-40 minutes or until the chicken is tender and the sauce thickened. Serve with some green beans or spring onions. 435 Calories per portion.

LAMB, SPINACH AND POTATO CURRY This is a low-cal version of Dave’s favourite curry - saag gosht - becuase he couldn’t bear to it give it up. If you are running short of time, cut out the fresh garlic, ginger and chilli - the curry will still taste great. The recipe contains potatoes so there is no need to serve it with extra rice.
SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH SMOKED SALMON SERVES 6 600g lamb leg steaks (about 4 steaks) 1 tbsp sunflower oil 2 large onions, roughly chopped 4 large garlic cloves, peeled and roughly chopped 25g chunk of fresh root ginger, peeled and roughly chopped 1 plump fresh chilli, (deseeded if you like) 75g medium or mild curry paste (depending on your taste) 400g can of chopped tomatoes 350g potatoes, preferably Maris Pipers, peeled and cut into 3cm chunks 450ml water 2 bay leaves 1 tsp flaked sea salt, plus extra for seasoning the meat 1 tsp caster sugar 3 ripe medium tomatoes, quartered 100g young spinach leaves freshly ground black pepper METHOD Trim the lamb of any hard fat and cut the meat into rough chunks of about 3cm. Season with salt and pepper. Heat a teaspoon of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the lamb in 2 batches until lightly coloured on all sides. Transfer the lamb to a plate as soon as each batch is browned. Heat the remaining oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and add the onions. Cook over a medium heat for
6-8 minutes until they’re softened and lightly browned, stirring regularly. Turn down the heat, add the garlic, ginger, chilli and curry paste and cook for 5 minutes more, stirring frequently. Remove from the heat and blitz the onion mixture with a stick blender until blended to a purée. Or you can let the mixture cool for a few minutes, then blend it in a food processor before tipping it back into the casserole. Return the casserole to the hob over a medium heat. Preheat the oven to 1900C/Fan 1700C/Gas 5. Add the browned lamb to the spiced onion purée in the dish and cook over a gentle heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring. Add the chopped tomatoes, potatoes, water, bay leaves, teaspoon of salt and sugar. Bring everything to a gentle simmer, then cover with a lid and place the casserole in the oven for 1 hour and 30 minutes or until the lamb is tender and the sauce has thickened. Check after 1 hour and give the contents of the casserole dish a good stir. Take the dish out of the oven and remove the lid. Stir in the quartered tomatoes and spinach leaves. Cover once more and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft and the spinach has wilted. Serve hot with some spoonfuls of fatfree yoghurt if you fancy.
This is a treat - light but tasty and packed with protein. It takes next to no time to prepare and makes a really special weekend breakfast or brunch. Shows that you can breakfast like a king and still keep the calories under control. SERVES 2 4 medium eggs 1 tbsp freshly snipped chives, plus a few extra to garnish(optional) 15g butter 4 slices of smoked salmon (about 75g) 1 English muffin, cut in half flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper METHOD Beat the eggs with a pinch of flaked sea salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Use a metal whisk and make sure you beat the eggs really well. Stir in the chives if you’re using them. Melt the butter in a medium non-stick saucepan over a low heat. Pour the beaten eggs into the pan and cook very gently for 2 minutes, stirring slowly until the eggs are softly scrambled. Remove from the heat and stir for a few seconds more - the eggs will continue to cook for a while. While the eggs are cooking, toast the muffin and put 1 half on each plate, cut side up. Spoon the scrambled eggs over the muffins, add the slices of smoked salmon and season with a little more black pepper. Garnish with extra chives if you wish. Serve immediately.

The Origins of Age Concern can be traced back to Liverpool in the 1920’s, although it was during the Second World War that Old People’s Welfare Committees sprang up quite spontaneously across London to undertake “befriending” and “meals on wheels” and were then replicated across England and Wales. In the 1950’s The National Council on Ageing was formed as an overarching umbrella organisation and became Age Concern England in 1973. More recently Age Concern and Help the Aged merged to become Age UK, however, some Age Concerns retained their independence and declined to join the Age UK partnership. Age Concern Central Lancashire is one such local, independent charity providing services to the over 55s in Preston and South Ribble. Our work is much the same now as it was over 30 years ago, promoting the well-being of all older people and helping to make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. Irene was referred to the befriending service as she was at risk of becoming isolated following the sudden death of her husband and a subsequent fall which left her with
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
mobility problems. Irene was introduced to Joyce, one of our volunteer visitors, also a widow. They have a great deal in common and find plenty to chat about. It has helped Irene’s feeling of isolation having Joyce visiting every Tuesday. They can’t get over how well they get along and the time goes by quickly chatting over a cup of tea and a cake (or two) and discussing the books they have read. The service has been of great benefit to them both. Ann tells us: ‘I have very fond memories and so much gratitude for the care the Age Concern Central Lancashire staff at Withy Trees Day Centre afforded my mother. Mum had vascular dementia which made her confused, sometimes upset and often angry but she loved going to Withy Trees. She came home with her hair or her nails done and showed me with such pleasure. She had company, good food, entertainment and care and she was treated with respect; she didn’t feel like a burden or nuisance. I could go to work and deal with the many issues that occurred during the day knowing that when I came home Mum would be happily waiting to tell me about her day. It is because I am so grateful to the centre that I have been a volunteer in the Plungington Road Charity shop, helping to raise the funds to keep services such as this wonderful centre open.’ Each year we help thousands of older people through direct support or by sign posting them to the help and services they require. You can obtain information from each of our charity shops at: Market Place or Plungington Road, Preston, Station Road, Bamber Bridge and Hope Terrace Lostock Hall, see www.55plus.org.uk or tel. 01772 552 850. 33

10 Quick, Easy and Healthy Breakfast Tips
Enjoy foods high in fat and sugar, but in moderation - foods high in fat and sugar, such as cakes, biscuits, chocolate and fried foods all taste good but in large amounts can raise your cholesterol, put weight on and won’t help your heart health in the long term. If you like to eat these foods, don’t cut them out altogether as this may make you want them even more. Instead, reduce the quantity and how often you have them, saving them for special occasions.
Some studies have correlated happiness with a stronger immune system, better ability to cope with stress, positive mood, greater pain endurance, longer life-span, and a lower risk of heart disease.
1. Smoothies are a great and yummy way to incorporate more fruit into your breakfast. Try blending strawberries, bananas and low-fat yogurt. Add some skimmed milk or fruit juice if it’s too thick! 2. Serve whole-wheat pancakes topped with bananas, honey and blueberries. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants that are great for fighting off disease and signs of ageing in the body. 3. Flavour your morning whole grain bagel with spreads like, low-fat cream cheese or fresh fruit preserves. 4. Add nuts or chopped fruit to your whole-grain cereal or porridge for an energy boosting breakfast! 5. Shave one ounce of dark chocolate onto a cup of low-fat yogurt. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that can help reduce levels of bad cholesterol. 6. Drink unsweetened orange juice. The vitamin C in this citrus fruit help to strengthen your immune system and enhance collagen production, which is essential for keeping the skin looking plump and young!
Stay hydrated - drinking water is great to keep you hydrated; helping your body remove toxins, aid concentration and stop you feeling tired. Having a glass with a meal can make you feel fuller, helping to stop you from overeating. For extra flavour, try adding slices of your favourite fruit such as berries, lemon slices or fresh mint leaves. 3. Get active: • Use the stairs as often as possible instead of the lift or escalator. • Get off the bus a stop earlier and walk to your destination. • Turn housework into exercise dusting, vacuuming, cleaning the bath, washing the car, mowing the lawn and gardening are good ways to burn some extra calories.
7. Make a healthy omelette using organic eggs and fill with your favorite vegetables, e.g. onion, peppers or mushrooms!
• Instead of meeting friends for a coffee, why not meet in the park for a nice stroll?
8. Spread wholenut peanut butter onto slices of apple. Peanuts contain vitamin E which helps to repair damaged skin tissues, while apples provide fibre aiding normal digestive patterns.
Sleep plays an important role in our health. For adults, getting the recommended 7 hours per night has been shown to enhance memory, improve immune response and boost the body’s repair system.
9. Enjoy a cup of green tea with your breakfast - as it’s been found to lower blood pressure, reduce risk of diabetes and arthritis. 10. Try eating within an hour of waking up. The longer you wait to eat breakfast, the hungrier you will become, making you more likely to overeat. Have your 5 portions of fruits and vegetables which are packed with vitamins, fibre and antioxidants, essential for fighting off disease. Introduce whole grains into your meals - they’re good sources of fibre and can help regulate blood pressure and improve heart health. Good ideas

5. Relax and unwind: Eliminating stress from your lifestyle can help your mind function better, heal your body faster and aids digestion. The Formula for a Healthy and Happy Life Don’t worry, be happy! Good health is something that most of us aspire for in life. Whether this means exercising regularly or eating the right foods – we’re essentially trying to look better or feel better for as long as possible. But are you making happiness part of your daily health routine? Growing research by physicians, philosophers and economists have linked the science
What’s the secret to happiness? Defining happiness isn’t a simple task. In an effort to narrow down our understanding, researchers have created the UK’s first ever ‘Feel Good Formula’: (Mx16 + Cx1 + Lx2) + (Tx5 + Nx2 + Bx33) So how do we interpret this equation? What does it all mean? Renowned professor, Dr Todd Kashdan who led the study explains: “there is no single secret to feeling good, but when these six ingredients are carefully attended to, in the right doses, you will be on target for a happy life”. The 6 factors in this ‘Feel Good Formula’ are: Live in the moment (M) – Try to appreciate the sounds, smells and sights around you that you might take for granted in your daily life. It is important to remind yourself every hour that you are awake (average= 16 hours). Be curious (C): Once a day, be spontaneous enough to explore the unknown and uncertain aspects of your life. Do something you love (L): An essential part of a happy life is to take part in an activity twice a day that truly gives you pleasure or excites you. Think of others first (T): While it is important to care for yourself, there is great value in spreading love to others - which can ultimately make you feel good too. Share your appreciation with people around you 5 times a day, by offering compliments, listening intently and doing good deeds. Nurture relationships (N): Research has found that the happiest people in the world have a close relationship with a significant other. Twice a day, make an effort to devote some quality time to a family member, relative, friend or partner. Take care of your body (B): This doesn’t have to mean extreme dieting or intense exercising. Embracing your body is about nourishing yourself with healthy food three times a day and incorporating 30 minutes of exercise once a day. 37
HEALTH a vital part known as the cochlea. This is a coiled tube with two fluid filled chambers. Here there are 17,000 hair cells, each with a structure known as stereocilla. The sound waves passed along the ear cause these to move which sends an electrical sign down the auditory nerve to our brain, where it is recognised as sound.
Vastly improve your quality of life for years to come Hearing loss is a common problem and many of us will experience some hearing difficulty as we get older. But this isn’t something we have to suffer with and there are many ways in which to seek help if you feel you need it. Action on Hearing Loss estimate that in the UK around 10 million people have some degree of hearing impairment or deafness and 6.3 million of this total are of retirement age. This problem usually develops gradually over time, due to age or repeated exposure to loud noise, although, a small group of people may experience sudden hearing loss.
The outer ear is the external part which we see on the side of our heads. This section is attached to the ear canal, which is the passage in which sound travels. The middle ear is a small cavity filled with air and contains three important bones called ossicles. When sound hits the ear drum, it vibrates and these vibrations are passed onto these bones Finally, the inner ear contains
Hearing loss is the result of sound signals not being able to reach the brain. There are two types of hearing loss. The first is where there is damage to the sensitive hair cells in the inner ear caused by either age or injury, known as sensorineural hearing loss. The second is where sound can’t pass through the ear due to a blockage, usually caused by a build up of earwax or an ear infection. This is called conductive hearing loss. Some people may experience both of these types and this is known as mixed signal hearing loss. The main symptoms of hearing difficulty are not hearing people clearly or misunderstanding what someone says, having to ask someone to repeat themselves several times and finding yourself needing music or the television on a high volume to be able to hear.
Our hearing is a complicated process and the ear is made up of three different parts which help us do this; the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear.

Experts say that age is the most common cause of hearing loss. Everyone will experience some form of this as they get older and by age 80, most people will have significant hearing problems. However, noise induced hearing damage is very common. People who find themselves regularly exposed to very loud noises, usually at work, are most at risk, such as construction workers using pneumatic drills, or those who are employed in bars and nightclubs. Those regularly attending loud music concerts and events can also be at risk. This can also be a cause of tinnitus, which is where a person experiences a constant ringing or buzzing inside their ears. If you think you are experiencing hearing loss, you should see a specialist hearing aid dispenser as soon as possible as there are many
options out there to help. They will give you a simple hearing test and examine the inside of your ear to look for any problems and are qualified to identify any medical contra-indications for onward referral to an ENT consultant etc. In most cases, people who are experiencing hearing problems will be fitted with a hearing aid. There are many types available depending on the person and the problem. Prentice Professional Partners provide help and advice to those who are experiencing difficulties with hearing loss, as well as access to try out the technologies that may be of help – completely free of charge. Their latest technology includes an invisible hearing aid, which will help those who do have hearing issues and need a device to help them in their everyday lives, but do not want it to be visible.
Figures show that around four million people in the UK could benefit from a hearing aid but do not wear one. Action on Hearing Loss audiology specialist, Crystal Rolfe, told NHS Choices: “Many people are put off by the idea of wearing hearing aids because they think they are unsightly,” “We need a new attitude to hearing aids. Wearing them should be as unremarkable as wearing glasses.” It is important that if you are experiencing any issues with hearing loss that you get the necessary help you need. There are many options out there to make your hearing better and vastly improve your quality of life for years to come. Written by Kelly Spencer 50 Plus Magazine.

LEYLAND DENTURE CENTRE Leyland Denture Centre is an existing clinic focusing on providing dentures directly to the public. As a result they are able to concentrate on providing exceptional quality of private dentures to their patients. Their success is attributed to the investments that they have made in terms of latest technology laboratory equipment, using the best materials and the most natural, life like and realistic denture teeth that are available. Not to mention their biggest investment; in there own training and qualifications as Clinical Dental Technicians.
What is a Clinical Dental Technician? A Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) is a qualified dental technician that has under gone further Education and Training in areas such as Medical Emergencies Cross Infection Control and Oral Pathology (cancers and anomalies) to name just a few sections that make up the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology as Awarded by the Royal Collage of Surgeons (RCS). It is this qualification that allows the clinicians at Leyland Denture Centure to be able to be registered and regulated with the General Dental Council (the official body for protecting the public with regards to dentistry) and carry indemnity insurance. It is this qualification, which means that only Dentists and Clinical Dental Technicians are the only Dental Professionals permitted to supply dentures direst to the public. A dental technician is not qualified to supply a denture directly to the
public. However, despite this being an act of Mal practice many technicians will still practice illegally without informing the patient that they are not qualified. If you are unsure if your denture provider is qualified; ask them for their GDC registration number, then contact the GDC to see if they are registered not just as a dental technician but as a CDT. Dentures, like most things, have a limited lifespan; usually around 5-7 years. After this period of time the denture can start to offer inadequate facial support, which can leave cheeks looking sunken and withered as well as lips appearing excessively wrinkled. New dentures can reduce these age related features by supporting the facial tissues without making the teeth looking large and protruded. Leyland Denture Centre offer FREE consultation so that they can assess what services or treatment you might require as well as showing you the various standards of dentures that they can produce. After this free consultation you are under no obligation to go ahead and have new dentures made, the door is open for you to go away and reflect upon the information that you have been presented.

PROSTATE NEWS
As we get older, we have an increasing risk of prostate cancer. Researchers have shown that Lycopene (the red colour in tomatoes and one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants) is beneficial for those at risk as well as those who already have the disease. For example, the following studies all point towards positive benefits: Harvard Medical School, USA A study of 50,000 men showed a significant reduction in the incidence of prostate cancer for men on high (tomato) Lycopene diets. “Frequent consumption of tomato products is associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer.” Kings College Hospital, London A 12 month trial involving men with confirmed prostate cancer found that about 70% of those consuming Lycoplus, a dietary supplement containing Lycopene, benefited from a much reduced rate of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) increase or an actual reduction in their PSA. “Our clinical study lends weight to the probability that dietary supplementation with Lycopene [from Lycoplus] slows disease progression in men with prostate cancer.”
Karmanos Cancer Institute, Detroit, USA Amongst a group of men with prostate cancer who were to have radical prostatectomy, some took a Lycopene supplement, some not. Following surgery it was found in the Lycopene group that more than two-thirds had the cancer confined to the prostate whereas in the other group more than half found the cancer had spread. Similarly, in the Lycopene group less than 20% had tumours larger than 4cc but in the other group the equivalent number was approximately 50%. “Lycopene as tomato extract may not only help prevent prostate cancer but also may be useful to treat prostate cancer.” Although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood, it is known that Lycopene accumulates in the prostate gland. Many researchers think that Lycopene’s antioxidant properties help to protect the body’s DNA from damaging free radicals. Others believe that Lycopene improves cell-to-cell communication, reducing the risk of the uninhibited growth seen in cancer cells. In all likelihood, several mechanisms are at work simultaneously and there is much research currently being conducted across the globe to understand these interactions. In the meantime, many men are not waiting for full scientific explanations but are turning to Lycopene to reduce the risk of prostate disease. Humans possess no mechanism to make Lycopene; instead we accumulate it from our diet. Furthermore, natural Lycopene is hardly taken up at all from the consumption of raw tomatoes and only becomes “bioavailable” if the fruit is cooked and/or processed prior to eating. Consequently, supplements such as Lycoplus EXTRA are an increasingly attractive option.
Reactivating Lycopene with Vitamin C Every time a damaging free radical is removed by a Lycopene molecule, the antioxidant becomes “spent” – in essence, the Lycopene sacrifices itself to protect the body’s DNA. However, research has shown that the presence of plenty of vitamin C allows the “spent” Lycopene molecules to be reactivated, rejuvenating them and preparing them to quench another poisonous free radical. Thus, vitamin C is believed to prolong the antioxidising effects of Lycopene.
STOP PRESS Diet rich in tomatoes may lower breast cancer risk In work to be published in 2014 in the Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism, Dr Adana Llanos from Rutgers University, USA shows that a tomato-rich diet could help to protect at-risk post-menopausal women from breast cancer because Lycopene affects the level of hormones that play a role in metabolism and cancer risk. The risk reduction was clear for older (50+) women after only 10 weeks of 25mg Lycopene per day – approximately 2 capsules of Lycoplus Extra daily.
Staying Informed George & Partners is committed to providing readable, up-to-date, scientifically robust information about lycopene research, particularly that related to prostate cancer, breast cancer, heart disease and skin health. entitlement. However, there is also a trend towards having children at a later age. This means that people divorcing at over 50 years can still have young or relevant children to consider.
Willetts & Co Solicitors are a friendly, family run practice on Hoghton Street, Southport. The principal solicitor, Tracy Willetts decided to strike out on her own in 2012 after working for a prestigious family law firm in Liverpool for over 13 years. She has already established herself as a conscientious, reliable solicitor who always goes the extra mile to make sure that the client is satisfied.
The usual concerns regarding the family home, maintenance and pension rights will be considered in detail to ensure that any decisions made today do not have an adverse effect in the future. It is imperative that consideration is given to current circumstances and the effect that the divorce will have upon future, post retirement circumstances.
Tracy is assisted by her sister, Lisa Farrell who is the firm’s practice manager. She deals with all financial and administrative tasks. Willetts & Co Solicitors is now established in beautiful offices at 28 Hoghton Street, Southport. This is a relatively unique practice as they specialise in family law including all matters arising from divorce, civil partnership, children, financial matters, cohabitation and inheritance. Many of these issues will be relevant to the 50 plus client but it is true that the rate of divorce in the over 50 age group is increasing. We are conscious that there are very specific issues to deal with, particularly regarding pension

PLANNING FOR
THE FUTURE Everyone should consider some basic legal planning to make sure that their families and loved ones are protected in case of future events which can affect anyone. Here we consider the “essentials” of making a Will, Lasting Power of Attorney and Gift of Property into Trust.
REASONS TO MAKE A WILL Making a Will is important, particularly when you realise that without a Will the Government will decide who will receive your money and possessions after you die. Unfortunately this can cause many difficulties for your surviving family and relatives at an already distressing time. By making a Will you can help alleviate additional pressures on your family. The myth that ‘my wife will receive everything anyway’ is not true. Your estate would be shared out in accordance with the ‘Statutory Legacy’ rules and your wife would receive the first £250,000 with the rest going into trust. This might not be enough to enable your wife to keep the matrimonial home. When it comes to ‘common law husband or wife’, there is no such thing. Only people who are legally married or have formed a civil partnership will be classed as husband, wife or civil partner and only they can enjoy the benefits of automatically inheriting part of their spouse’s estate. You would have to go to Court to claim part of the estate which will come with the usual costs and expenses. Children are another reason why it is important to make a Will. If something was to happen to you and your children were still minors or disabled, you can appoint Guardians to look after them. It is also important if you are married for a second time and have children from a previous relationship. If you were to die first and your estate was below the ‘Statutory Legacy’ your whole estate would pass to your second spouse and your children would have no absolute right to anything. If you are legally separated the ‘Statutory Legacy’ will still apply until the divorce is finalised so if you want your estate to pass to someone else then you must make a Will. 44
You should have your Will prepared by an experienced Lawyer who will make sure all the relevant points are covered especially if your Will is complicated and Tax Planning Advice may be required.
LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY Most people know they should have a Will, but have you considered what would happen if you were to become unable to manage your own affairs during your lifetime? Who would make difficult financial and personal decisions on your behalf? You can protect yourself by making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). The LPA is a legal document in which you can appoint another person or persons as Attorney(s) to act on your behalf in relation to your financial affairs and/or personal welfare if you become unable to do so for yourself. The LPA was introduced under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and must be registered with the Court of Protection before it can be used. It is useful if you are ill or in hospital or residential care when it is difficult for you to look after your personal finances or welfare. There is one type of LPA dealing with your financial affairs i.e. managing your Bank Accounts and Investments and also selling your property if required. There is also an LPA dealing with your personal welfare i.e. issues relating to your personal care and where you should live and also giving or refusing consent to certain medical treatment. It is important to note that you can only make an LPA if you have sufficient mental capacity and this has to be confirmed by a Certificate Provider. In some cases it may be necessary to obtain a Doctor’s opinion if there is any doubt. It is also important to note that it does not take away your independence as one of the main principles of the Act is that capacity is decision specific and Attorneys should assist people to make their own decisions wherever possible. If you should lose capacity without having an LPA in place then it will be necessary for someone to apply to the Court of Protection for authority to deal with your affairs which can be a very slow and expensive process. An LPA is an important legal document which should be properly prepared and explained to you by an experienced Lawyer. www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
GIFT OF PROPERTY INTO TRUST Most people are concerned about the costs of long term residential care. Currently if your assets exceed £23,250 including the value of your property then you will be self funding and have to pay for the cost of your care yourself. The biggest concern for most people is that you may have to sell your property to pay for the care. However it is possible to avoid this by giving your property away during your lifetime, usually to your children. The gift however must be made in good time and not simply with the intention of avoiding future care fees otherwise it may be caught by the Local Authority’s anti-avoidance measures. You could simply make an outright gift to your children but as you will probably wish to continue to live in your property this could cause problems if you were to fall out with them or if they were to experience matrimonial problems or bankruptcy it could lead to someone else making a claim against their share of your property. Additionally, it could also cause problems for your children in owning a share of a second property and could give rise to possible Capital Gains Tax implications on the eventual sale of the property. We would therefore always recommend that a gift of property should be a gift into Trust which would protect you and your children from most of these potential difficulties. The Trust would provide for you to remain living in the property for as long as you wish on the basis that you continue to be responsible for all the outgoings as at present. The Trust can also provide for the property to be sold and a replacement property purchased for you to live in if you so wished. When you no longer live in the property for whatever reason, the trust would come to an end and the property could be sold with the proceeds divided between your children. In this way you would no longer be treated as the legal owner of the property if you were to be assessed for long-term care fees and also as you are occupying the property which is held in trust, this usually means that main residence exemption from Capital Gains Tax can be claimed although this is decided by the Revenue on a case by case basis.

Maximise your retirement income Look back to 1948, and you will see a dramatic rise in the birth rate and this baby boom means that this year some 2,200 people each day will turn 65. It is vital that these people maximise their retirement income. If these people have saved into a pension, either via a work pension scheme or on their own via a personal pension plan they will get an offer from their current provider just before the provider anticipates that they are due to retire and this quote will show an income which they guarantee to pay in exchange for the money that the individual has saved. Matthew Berry, Chartered Financial Planner of Berry Financial Planning in Bispham Village urges Lancashire

residents not to simply accept this offer but to exercise their legal right to shop around known as the ‘open market option’ as recent research has highlighted that by not doing so UK Pensioners are losing £1 billion in income each year. Matthew advises “Over 1500 different medical conditions can be taken into account when assessing pension income and each one can qualify a client for an enhanced annuity, basically more income in retirement. A recent client was offered £5,229 annual income from his existing provider but by taking into account his high blood pressure and high cholesterol we have boosted this annual income to £6,827, over 30%.” Research (Daily Express 1st May 2012) shows 70% of people of retiring age would be entitled to enhanced annuities but only 2% actually apply for them.
Matthew highlights that many factors affect annuity rates, not just life expectancy and health “People need to be aware that from 21st December 2012 new EU gender discrimination rules have come into force that mean men and women are now offered unisex annuity rates and this has caused a drop in male annuity rates and thus it is vital that people get independent advice about their retirement options so that they can maximise their income”
As you approach retirement, your pension provider will contact you with details of your retirement income. But you don’t have to accept this offer. Berry Financial Planning may get you more income by helping you shop around using the ‘open market option’ with the highest rates for smokers and people with health conditions and on medication.
We are Independent and compare annuity rates from the whole of the market.
We are local advisers who will talk you through all your options.

Have you joined yet? Recently, The Archbishop of Canterbury has expressed serious concerns about the practice of payday lending. In doing so, he has given voice to a growing belief, within the church and wider society, that there is a need for a more ethical and just financial system, and that more should be done to develop alternatives to high-interest lending. Credit unions represent a more ethical, communitybased approach to banking. For that reason, the Archbishop has called on churches and church members to support credit unions in their local area, helping the sector as a whole to grow. Residents of the Fylde Coast are able to do exactly that by joining Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre Credit Union. This young, ambitious and growing organisation provides a safe, ethical, responsible alternative for savings and loans and yet in many ways is able to offer more than the mainstream.
Credit unions have a number of clear aims and values, including: • Encouraging members to save, as well as borrow. • Offering loans at fair and reasonable interest rates, taking into account what people can afford to repay. • Training and empowering members to make informed choices about their finances. • Using members’ savings efficiently and for the mutual benefit of members and the local community. • Credit unions are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and all savings deposited are protected up to a total value of £85,000 per member.
This Credit Union has paid dividends to savers of 3% in 3 of the past 4 years and offers loans from £200 to £15,000 at rates that often beat the mainstream banks. With all of this in mind, the question perhaps isn’t why you should join in and support your Credit Union, but why you haven’t already done so?
