THE ROYAL CLIPPER - THE WINDWARD ISLANDS OF THE CARIBBEAN BY DEBBIE MARSHALL, SILVER TRAVEL ADVISOR. a great sense of humour, with a different animal each day fashioned from the towels which gave a real sense of anticipation when returning to the cabin! There’s one main restaurant with an upper lounge area and choice of bars and two decks. Free tea and coffee are available 24/7 (a great place to meet fellow Brits). Outside, there’s the tropical bar on the main deck, and a spacious upper deck with three small swimming pools and plenty of loungers in amongst the ropes and other workings of the ship.

“I absolutely must go on that ship.” Carolyn (a vibrant 65 year old Norwegian, now on her fourth Star Clippers cruise) explained over a sundowner rum punch that she had been in Barbados a few years earlier on board a large cruise liner, and her eyes were drawn across the marina to the most beautiful sailing ship she had ever seen. It was love at first sight, and she has never looked back. There were many such tales on board the Royal Clipper. At the captain’s ‘returners’ drinks party on the upper deck, almost half of the guests (out of 200 or so) assembled to toast their much-loved ship and cruise line, and of course to compare notes - how many cruises, which ships, which destinations, personal favourites, and who were the staff and crew members they recognised (and importantly, who recognised them, even down to their personal taste in wine). Loyalty like that can’t be bought - it’s deep in the soul of the warm-hearted and friendly guests and staff who return year after year. The secret? The essence of a Star Clippers voyage is that it’s a genuine sailing experience on board the largest full-rigged ship in the world with all of the comfort, superb dining and service of a 5 star cruise. 10

“I still want to enjoy sailing but not with all that responsibility.” This time it was George’s turn to explain why he had the Star Clippers bug. A retired civil servant from Massachusetts, he had captained many a small yacht in the past and still wanted to experience the buzz from travelling by sail power. His wife however, preferred luxury holidays with a little pampering in the sun. The two of them had found the perfect solution to ensure marital harmony for their golden years. January is the perfect time of year for a Caribbean cruise. Escaping from the UK with a direct flight to Barbados and then a quick hop to join the Royal Clipper, transitioning from the chill to the warmth in just a few hours. And what a welcoming ship it is, by far the most elegant and photogenic in the port, a vision of beauty with comfort and charm in equal measures. The cabins are well-appointed with an excellent shower room, TV (with a choice of free movies on DVD) and an easy walk to the restaurant (although no lift). There’s no getting lost with just three levels of cabins (the upper floor with balconies), the lower with double portholes. Our steward had

Cruising with Star Clippers is delightfully informal and relaxed, so getting to know other guests on board is very much part of the experience. Visit the top deck and watch the mechanics of the sailing experience, the moving of the masts, the hoisting of the sails, the endless adjustments to set them and even a chance to climb the rigging and visit the engine room. With 56,000 square feet of sail and a mast height of 197ft there’s a constant movement of the crew as they go about their jobs with quiet professionalism and pride; this is very much a working ship and you feel right at the heart of its operation. Wander to the front and there’s the captain standing on the bridge directing his crew with understated but absolute authority. And an unbeatable theatre took place one afternoon when we watched the man himself scale to the very top of the mast on an unscheduled working visit. Perched at almost 200 feet in the air, with a fresh wind, he was completely at ease in his surroundings. It certainly must beat a desk job! After just a day or two, life on board the Royal Clipper established a delightful and relaxed daily routine. Rising early to enjoy the sunrise with a dazzling display of oranges and pinks through the clouds and over the hills of the islands, accompanied by the water performance of the flying fish and the birds swooping to catch them on their brief dart

Some prefer the smaller Star Clipper and Star Flyer which tend to heel over with a fuller sailing experience; and others are faithful to the larger Royal Clipper which is buffeted less by big seas and so provides a more stable voyage. But make no mistake, both are true sailing ships. To add to the discussion, there’s a new ship on the way, rumoured to be called the Flying Clipper, which will be longer, taller and will have a capacity for three hundred guests.

Then with my appetite likewise awakened, it was high time for a buffet breakfast (the bread choice and quality alone rivalled any top hotel), and the not too arduous task of deciding on the plan for the day ahead. The ship called in at a different island each day (St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua, St Kitts, Iles des Saintes and Martinique), and a carefully selected range of excursions were on offer on most islands. Usually we would return to the ship for lunch which was also a buffet with different themes each day (including a fabulous beach barbecue in Antigua - what a way to lunch in style!), and any thought of hunger later in the afternoon was soon dispelled by a fabulous tea served at 5pm in the tropical bar area where a soulful singer and keyboard player entertained. Then it would be time to ascend to the upper deck, cameras at the ready, to savour the setting sun, cocktail of the day in hand, and enjoy the Sailaway - the highlight for many guests. Dramatic and emotional music (Vangelis, `1492 Conquest of Paradise’ – one of those tunes you recognise but can’t quite place) provides the atmosphere while the crew hoist the sails, the captain watches over and the guests step to the side of the incredible web of ropes and pulleys, some with a tear in their eye as our elegant ship sets sail for the next destination.

Back-to-back cruises were recommended, taking in two weeks (and in fact a good number of guests were staying on board to do just that, with a week’s cruise in the Grenadines beginning as we reluctantly disembarked). Others raved about the Rome to Venice cruise, an island tour of Sicily and an Atlantic crossing. The only choice appears to be which of the clippers to book and when. There really is no other choice - a love affair that is destined to last. Silver Travel Advisor recommends Star Clippers’ three magnificent, fully crewed tall ships sail in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and south east Asia. Dinner is a la carte, where guests can choose to sit separately to eat if they choose, although it’s more interesting to be on a mixed table for 6 or 8 and join in the lively discussions with many different nationalities. Evening entertainment was very informal, with a highlight being a steel band. For guests who love to discover sea life, snorkelling equipment is available free of charge, and for those who prefer a little self-indulgence, there’s also an excellent spa with a range of treatments. And a gym should all that wonderful food be resulting in a couple of unwelcome extra inches around the waist. The seven days went by all too fast, with experiences to savour that will last a lifetime. New friendships made, stories told and a true sense of well-being shared; it is rare to find a group of guests who are collectively having such a ball - usually making their own entertainment but also enjoying the talent show, or cheering the staff as they danced around the restaurant on the final night! So where to next? I consulted with Carolyn, George and many other guests on board. What were their future plans and could they inspire me? There are currently three ships in the Star Clippers fleet, and loyalties are divided as to personal favourites.

EQUITY RELEASE – WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? If you’ve previously considered Equity Release, or are looking at your current Equity Release plan, then you may be pleasantly surprised by the number of options now on offer.

redeemed when the final planholder dies, or moves into long-term care, with the amount never being more than the value of the home, if taken out with a lender member of the Equity Release Council.

Put simply, a Lifetime Mortgage (which accounts for almost all equity release plans and enables you to retain 100% ownership of your home), provides tax-free funds for 55+ homeowners, at a generally fixed interest rate, for you to use however you want.

Advice on the best route You can, though, influence at the outset what you or your beneficiaries may face down the line. There are a multitude of options we could discuss with you, such as:

Obviously, do remember that irrespective of any sizeable house price growth you may have benefitted from over the years, you (or your estate) are not being given ‘free money’ against the value of your home.

Interest Payments - if you opt to make no payments at all, then the rolling-up of the interest can, for example, generally double the amount owed in around 15 years. Should you want to minimise this, you can make full or partial interest payments each month and can revert to rollup at any time.

You do, however, have the option of ‘freedom’ from any monthly payments, if wanted. The outstanding capital (and also any interest owing) would be

Typically, the ERC decreases on a sliding scale, with nonpayable once the fixed period has passed. Downsizing protection - this allows planholders to downsize to a smaller property and repay the loan without incurring an ERC. Typically, there’s a qualifying period of five years before this feature applies. With the complexity of what’s on offer, it makes sense to take specialist advice!

UZHUNNA VADA (SAVOURY LENTIL DONUTS) I have enjoyed uzhunna vada many times over the years but they are never as good as homemade. At busy restaurants, it is difficult to fry and serve the vada immediately, which is much easier to do when cooking at home. In the UK, these crispy and fluffy fried vada are often served as a starter with other fried snacks but in Kerala they are usually served for breakfast, like bagels.These are delicious as a starter, but also try them as a main with my sambar and uzhunna vada combo. Roast the 1 tablespoon of urad dhal in a dry frying pan over medium– high heat until the lentils are nicely browned. Set aside. Soak the rest of the urad dhal in water for 4 hours or overnight. Then place them in a food processor with about 2 tablespoons of water and blend until you have a smooth but thick batter. Whisk all the other ingredients except the oil into the batter, including the roasted lentils.

Heat about 10cm (4in) of oil in a saucepan until visibly hot. If you drop a piece of the batter into the oil and it sizzles and rises to the top immediately, you’re ready to go. Place a bowl of water next to your batter, as it helps to have wet hands when forming the uzhunna vada, and rub a large metal spoon with oil to help the vada slide off. Dip a hand in the water and pick up about a half handful of the batter. Place the batter on the spoon and form it into a small ring donut shape by working your finger into the centre. Carefully lower the vada into the oil and start forming your next uzhunna vada. Work quickly and cook in small batches of about four or five. Don’t worry too much if they don’t look perfect at first.You will get better at it. Allow the uzhunna vada to fry for about 3 minutes or until golden brown. They should be nice and crispy on the exterior and soft and spongy inside. Keep them warm while you make the rest.

Serve with mint and coriander sauce, green and/or red coconut chutney, yoghurt sauce or any sauce that sounds good.

MAKES 20 – FEEDS A CROWD 300g (11/2 cups) plus 1 tbsp white split urad dhal lentils 20 fresh curry leaves, chopped 3 green chillies, finely chopped 1 tbsp ginger paste (or equal amount of finely chopped ginger) 3 tbsp finely chopped coriander (cilantro) 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp table salt 2 tbsp peppercorns, roughly crushed Rapeseed (canola) oil, for deepfrying To serve Mint and coriander sauce Green and/or red coconut chutney Yoghurt sauce

Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan over medium–high heat. When hot, stir in the mustard seeds. They will begin to pop. When they do, stir in the fenugreek (methi) seeds and curry leaves and temper in the oil for about 30 seconds. Add the chopped onions and sliced green chillies and stir it all into the oil.You want to cook the onions for about 10 minutes, until they are good and soft and lightly browned. Stir in the garlic and ginger. Sprinkle in the turmeric, chilli powder and ground coriander. Add the diced tomatoes, or if you prefer a deeper colour, try adding some tinned (canned) tomatoes. CHOCOLATE AND STRAWBERRY ‘PANI’ PURIS

This is a fun dessert to serve and it really only takes minutes to make.When I prepare a curry feast at home for friends, people are usually quite full by the time it comes to dessert.This one isn’t really filling and is a nice way to finish off the meal. For best results, make your own chocolate and chilli ice cream. If you’re in a rush, use goodquality chocolate ice cream and stir in chilli powder to taste. I first tried these dessertstyle pani puris at Zindiya in Birmingham and now I’m hooked!You can use the chocolate bar of your choice. I prefer dark chocolate, but milk chocolate is good, too. Small glasses or even shot glasses will work well for presentation. Roughly chop the chocolate into 1cm (1/2in) pieces. Place the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Bring about 3cm (11/4in) of water to a simmer in a saucepan that is slightly smaller than the bowl with the chocolate. Set the chocolate bowl on the mouth of the saucepan, making sure that the water is not touching the bottom of the bowl. Stir the chocolate until it is about 90% melted and take off the heat. The residual heat will melt the rest of the chocolate. Place a piece of parchment paper on a baking tray. Dip your puris into the melted chocolate so that they are nicely coated, then set them on the parchment paper and place in the freezer to harden for about 30 minutes. If you place the chocolate-coated puris in an air-tight bag, they will keep in the freezer for at least a week. To finish the dish, melt the ice cream but ensure that it is still very cold. Pour it equally into 4–6 small glasses. This can all be done ahead of time and placed in the coolest part of your fridge. When ready to serve, cut the strawberries into halves or quarters and fill the chocolate coated 16

Choose the right colour - Men often veer towards neutrals as their go to, whilst women tend to be more colour adventurous as a collective, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Understand whether cool or warm colours suit you and if bright or more muted tones are for you. For business dressing try using one brighter colour as an accent with two neutrals and for casual two or three colours (contrasting or complementing). It’s the detail that counts - Whether your style veers towards the more edgy, natural or classic, the power of dressing is all in the detail. Like a breath of fresh air, the best way to update your look is with a quality new accessory. Use scarves or ties to give a pop of colour. The right style sunglasses and watch can help you ooze style. There are more shoe colours than brown or black boots and loafers, or white trainers! There is a lot more choice of colour and style in footwear available for men now, so be a bit more adventurous. Spend more money on less pieces of clothing - Avoid buying poor quality, excessive items that you don’t need, eliminate mistake purchases and reduce the volume of clothes ending up in landfill. environment. Declutter your wardrobe and recycle any clothes you haven’t worn in the last 12 months or that don’t fit anymore. Think capsule - A capsule wardrobe gives you loads of benefits, like lots of outfits from a smaller number of clothes and gives you confidence that you will always look great. Think of it as a pyramid. At base level, choose every-day clothes in your best neutrals such as denim, winter coats, smart jackets, and expensive boots and bags. The middle level contains patterns and textures that suit your style and colour palette e.g. in shirts, polo shirts and jumpers and other tops. These are probably in your ‘wow’ colours - perhaps a smart chocolate jumper for Springs, or a deep burgundy shirt for winters. The top level are your statement items and accessories which people will notice immediately such as a red tie, some dapper shoes in a brighter colour and wonderful statement rucksack or bag or some serious sunglasses. Liven up your shirt collection - Prints and patterns are having quite the party in the men’s aisles at the moment with assorted patterned shirts making their way onto the high street shelves. Have fun and add zest by taking the plunge with a floral, striped or perhaps checked shirt, depending on your style, when you go out for an evening, but know whether bold or subtle, large or small patterns suit you. For some, lightweight linen is great for the

summer whilst polyester is a sweaty man’s nightmare and is bad for the planet. Shop for a suit in person - Most men have at least one suit, but never buy your suit online because the perfect fit is so important. Consider exact arm and leg length, trouser fit (straight, slim, hem etc) and jacket fit (including single vs double breasted, buttons etc). There is also huge variety in weight of fabric, patterns and colours on offer. Take your time to buy the right suit and bear in mind a good tailor can make basic alterations. Always use a suit bag for storage. When travelling - Roll your clothes into three sausages for packing to avoid creased clothes. Lay out your t-shirts and shirts, one inside the other, with the most crushable fabrics on the outside and roll them into a sausage. Trousers go in the second roll and everything else goes in the third from swimwear to shorts. Fill any spaces with underwear, socks, adapter plugs and belts. Choose your shoes carefully ie for walking and travelling in, shoes for by the pool and something to wear at night. Wrap them in old plastic bags or even better cotton shoe bags to keep the rest of your packing clean. Glasses - There is a huge choice on the market so know what your best colour palette is and the frame shapes that suit you. Try several colours such as a brown, navy, grey and gold or silver on, depending on what colours suit you, for a fun look why not try a red. Shape and weight are key – consider thin or thick frames, a sporty look, aviator, wrapped or oval lenses. If they look part of you, they are right, if they shout louder than you, they are wrong. Cheap glasses and sunglasses are usually cheap for a reason.You will soon need to buy another pair. Make sure everything fits well. Clothes should skim your body so that they are neither too tight, nor too loose. There is nothing worse than the wrong trouser length, ill-fitting t-shirts and shirts, or a badly fitting suit, particularly when the buttons can’t be done up! Red faced gardeners have named and shamed the world’s rudest plants but how many are growing in your garden? From hooker’s lips to the naked man orchid researchers from the online garden centre Gardeningexpress.co.uk have identified eight slightly offensive plants from across the globe. Whether it is a flower in the form of a naked man or a sexually-suggestive shrub, rude plants show that nature really does have a great sense of humour. A spokesperson from Gardeningexpress.co.uk said: “We know there is a time and a place for everything, but we just could not help ourselves when finding some plants on the cruder side of life. “But this list is not just about having a laugh, it really shows how wonderful plants can be. From one little seed, a plant can grow to create a detailed flower that just so happens to perfectly show something quite rude. We certainly had fun compiling the list.”

1. HOOKER’S LIPS So-called because of its uncanny resemblance to a heavily made-up mouth wearing lipstick, Hooker’s Lips is a shrub native to rainforests of Central and South America. It can grow more than three metres tall and its bright red lips grow to attract pollinators.

Amorphophallos Titanum, comes from three words. _Amorpho_ meaning ‘without form, or misshapen’, _Phallos_ meaning ‘phallus’ and _Titan _meaning gigantic.

5. SAUSAGE TREE Found all across Eastern Africa, the Kigalia, or Sausage tree, produces a fruit that looks like a sausage that can range between one to three feet long. The fruit, which is technically a berry, is actually very poisonous but can be fermented and turned into beer. Women have historically used the pulp to rub onto their skin to prevent blemishes. Brits have been told which plants will ensure a lush patch of green in their garden this summer despite the heatwave, with temperatures predicted to reach the mid-30s in places this summer

IN SEARCH OF BARNEY BY DAME ESTHER RANTZEN

outh Africa has lingered on my bucket list for years. I have heard so many wonderful descriptions of Cape Town of course I wanted to see it for myself. But other dreams intervened. To explore the South Pacific. To discover the wonders of Canada. So the fact that I have just spent a week in this glorious country and unexpectedly fallen in love with it is thanks to Great Uncle Barney. Ancestral tourism is all the rage, as more and more of us retrace our roots in order to understand our own DNA. Hence my pilgrimage to find Great Uncle Barney. And I am not the only one. We are a self-absorbed generation dedicated to finding new depth in ourselves. We study mindfulness, we send off our DNA to be analysed, and we explore our own family tree. I can’t be bothered with most of this, but I have become fascinated with one branch of my father’s family tree, one I only discovered when I was lucky enough to be the subject of the wonderful BBC series, Who Do You Think You Are? Until then I had never known why my father had the peculiar middle name, Barnato. To my astonishment I realised during the filming that my five-times Great Grandmother Sarah Rantzen was the sister of two extraordinary South African millionaires, Harry and Barney Barnato, who at one stage actually owned the

Kimberley Diamond Mine. I knew nothing about them, except that they started as pub entertainers in South Africa, and Barney ended his life mysteriously falling from the deck of a ship on his way back to England. So, I decided to try to dig up some of the family secrets buried, like the diamonds that made his fortune, in South Africa. My pilgrimage took me off the beaten tourist track, and into the Northern Cape. Everywhere I went, I stayed in the most luxurious B and Bs, clean and beautifully appointed. My first stop was in Johannesburg where, I discovered, Uncle Barney had set up a few businesses. It’s a vibrant city, and to my joy, when I arrived the jacaranda trees were in full bloom, a torrent of gorgeous lilac flowers. Of course, I had to find Mandela’s home, where the blossom arches over the street like a wedding guard of honour. The Old Fort Prison on Constitution Hill was a stark reminder of a harrowing time in South Africa and the tour reflects on the experiences that Gandhi and Nelson Mandela endured while they were prisoners there. But today’s South Africans told me they were determined to learn from the past and embrace the future. I was curious to discover whether Great Uncle Barney has left any footprints in Johannesburg, and indeed he has. In the

University of Witwatersrand there is a building called Barnato Hall, there are park gates with a blue plaque dedicated to him, calling him a Randlord, and a reference to a mansion he built which was later renamed Joel House. A Randlord is someone who made a fortune in the South African gold rush, so clearly Great Uncle Barney had done well in Johannesburg. But who was Joel, and why had his mansion been renamed after him? Obviously, I would have to go to Kimberley to find the answers. My preferred way of travelling is always by train, especially those classic trains lovingly refurbished. And I was in luck. The beautiful, luxurious fivestar Rovos Rail train calls in Kimberley, and I could pick it up from Pretoria, one of the three capitals of South Africa. The controversial President, Paul Kruger, lived in a modest Victorian house which is now a museum, garnished with two magnificent stone lions at the front door, which, I was told, were a birthday present to President Kruger from his great friend, my Great Uncle Barney in 1896. I nipped in to the museum shop to buy a little replica lion before I caught the Rovos Rail. It chugged through sun-bleached countryside of the Great Karoo, then its tracks wound on through the famous garden route between mountains and vineyards, to Cape Town. But I couldn’t stay. Great Uncle Barney summoned me to the diamond mine in Kimberley where he made his fortune, and I suppose mine too. Kimberley is a quiet pretty town these days, with very little of the wildness and frenzy that must have drawn the Barnato brothers to seek their fortune there. Ancestral tourists who go there are usually the descendants of those who fought in the Boer war, and there are local battlefields and monuments to visit. I was there on a merrier mission. When Barney and Harry went there in the Diamond Rush of 1873, their aim was not to fight but to make a bob or two, to continue their boxing, juggling pub entertaining because there were so many diamond miners with money in their pockets and nothing to spend it on. Barney was no fool. Little by little, from the money he earned as an entertainer, he began learning the diamond trade, and

with his savings to buy up the old claims that were no longer yielding their sparkling hoard of treasure. Then he bought some special equipment to dig deeper, and lo! there were the highest quality, including, rumour says, the fabulous huge yellow Tiffany Diamond as big as your fist. Although they no longer mine there, De Beers still has its headquarters in Kimberley, preserving its own history as well as mine. If you love diamonds it’s a fascinating visit, especially looking down from a high platform into The Big Hole, all that remains of the original mine, the biggest man-made excavation in the world. It’s now filled, not with glistening diamonds, but with bright blue water. De Beers has created a diamond museum where Elizabeth Taylor would eat her heart out admiring replicas of the most famous jewels in the world. De Beers has also recreated the diamond rush in a little village fashioned from some of the original Kimberley houses, and I was thrilled to find Barney Barnato’s Boxing Academy immortalised there. There is a picture of Great Uncle on its wooden walls, a little man with a natty moustache and a monocle, prepared, it seems to take on boxers twice his size, and described in a plaque as “an amazing personality”. I was still more thrilled to find Barney’s own boxing gloves preserved there, and to be told that when President Mandela visited, he actually (as an ex-boxer himself) tried them on and pronounced them good. But when Barney took on Cecil Rhodes head to head, Rhodes won. It was his company, De Beers which took over Kimberley and the world’s diamond trade. Cecil Rhodes himself negotiated the deal which paid Barney over five million pounds, at that time the biggest cheque ever written. My Great Uncle made it a condition also that he should be allowed to join the snobby Kimberley Club. Up till then Barney had been excluded, black-balled each time he tried to join. Rhodes was the founder and Chair, so, deal done, when Rhodes “accidentally dropped” the balls and declared that the Barnatos had been voted in, nobody dared contradict him. I was told that my Cockney uncle had been excluded because his language was so bad, it may be true. But it’s not so snobbish now, however bad your language you can stay in the Kimberley Club boutique hotel. Proud of its history, it still has the atmosphere, the mahogany and the stained-glass window of a Victorian gentleman’s club. Framed on the wall is a thank you letter dated 1947 from King George the Sixth, the Queen Mother and her daughters Elizabeth and Margaret. It seems that the Queen Mum accidentally left her diamond necklace on her dressing-table when she stayed there and they posted it back to her. There was, after all, no shortage of diamonds in Kimberley.

So now I knew how Barney made his millions. But how did he die? Nobody in the Kimberley Club, I was told, thought he had fallen off the ship’s deck by accident. Nor did they think, as the Coroner decided and the only witness, his nephew Solly Joel claimed, that it was suicide. The Kimberley Club suspect that Solly himself, who was the last person to speak to Barney at the time. as they were walking together around the deck, was somehow responsible. Especially since it appears that Barney disappeared over the side with a shout of “murder”. And according to Barney’s granddaughter Diana Barnato Walker, Barney had just discovered his nephew Solly had been systematically robbing the company of a million pounds, ever since Barney gave him a job there. But dead men tell no tales, and once Barney was drowned, Joel took over his shares in De Beers, and his mansion in Johannesburg. So that’s why it was renamed Joel House. I really recommend these explorations following the footsteps of your ancestors, even if you do stumble over the occasional skeleton. Did I discover my own Great Uncle Barney on my journey? I think I did. I caught a flavour of the rough and tumble of Kimberley during the Diamond Rush, found myself admiring the toughness of the little East End Cockney who earned a cheque of five million pounds, and on my way felt I had dug a little way under the surface of this lovely, dramatic country. Before I left, I spent a couple of nights in Cape Town, ate some delicious sea food, admired the view from Table Mountain and took an adventurous motor bike along the coast. I didn’t do the traditional tourist things, the safaris, the beaches, the townships, the vineyards, and now that I’ve fallen in love with the extraordinary country, I’ll definitely go back and do all that. But my mind is still reliving the joy of those jacarandas in blossom, and optimism of the South Africans I met. Perhaps I did solve the mystery of Great Uncle Barney’s death, and now I’m delighted he lives on in my father’s peculiar middle name.

Award-winning actress Lucy Fallon is to switch on the world-famous Illuminations in her home town of Blackpool. Lucy, who has won a host of TV awards for her role as Bethany Platt in ITV’s Credit Dave Nelson - Web friendly Coronation Street, will pull the famous switch in front of 20,000 people at the official Switch-On concert on the night of Friday 30 August. The Switch-On, which is the biggest night in Blackpool’s year-round events programme, triggers the start of 66 nights of Illuminations in the UK’s most visited seaside resort. Lucy, who studied singing, acting and drama from the age of two, made her first public stage appearance as a dancer in pantomime at the historic Blackpool Grand Theatre. Since joining the cast of Coronation Street in 2015 she has enjoyed a stellar rise to fame winning the National Television Award for Serial Drama Performance in 2018 and also Best Actress and Best Female Dramatic Performance in the British Soap Awards in the same year. The 23-year-old will now join a star-studded roster of Switch-On stars including the likes of Peter Kay, Robbie Williams, Dame Barbara Windsor, Hollywood film director Tim Burton, and last year’s celebrity, Alfie Boe. People with celiac disease arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to consume gluten and some dietary proteins which are found in wheat, barley and rye.Your GP may request for you to have a blood test or biopsy to test for this allergy. 3. Lactose intolerance - this is another common digestive problem which causes symptoms such as flatulence, diarrhoea, bloating, stomach cramps and nausea. The symptoms of lactose intolerance are similar to other medical conditions such as IBS, so it is important to speak to your GP before you decide to eliminate lactose from your diet.

FOOD INTOLERANCES VS ALLERGIES What is the difference between a food allergy and an intolerance? A food allergy causes an adverse reaction to the immune system which can at worst affect numerous organs in the body and can be life-threatening. Food intolerance symptoms are generally less serious and are often limited to digestive problems. People can be both intolerant and allergic to different types of food. You can be tested for food allergies by having tests such as blood tests and skin prick tests but medical tests for food intolerances are undeveloped and can be difficult because different types can have very similar symptoms, however donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t avoid seeking medical advice if you feel you may have a food intolerance.

What are the main types of food intolerance and allergies? 1. Gluten intolerance - if you experience bloating, diarrhoea or constipation, abdominal pain or headaches after eating food rich in gluten then try to cut gluten from your diet completely for a couple of months to see if your symptoms lessen. Always discuss this first with a GP to ensure you are taking the right steps. 2. Celiac disease - the symptoms for celiac disease are similar to gluten intolerance but this allergy is considered to be more serious

5. Egg allergy - 2% of children are allergic to eggs. Symptoms include a rash, nasal congestion, digestive symptoms such as vomiting, as well those similar to asthma such as coughing or shortness of breath. In rare cases this allergy can also cause anaphylaxis. 6. Tree nut allergy - is one of the more common allergies with symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, itching of the mouth, throat, eyes or skin and shortness of breath. In worst cases, this allergy can also cause anaphylactic shock. 7. Peanut allergy - many often get confused between tree nut and peanut allergies. The symptoms and testing methods are the same, however, peanuts are actually legumes not nuts. Although, about 40% of individuals who are allergic to peanuts also react adversely to at least one tree nut.

Interestingly only 1-2% of population are diagnosed with a food allergy whereas 30% believe they have an allergy. While any food can cause an adverse reaction, eight types of food account for about 90 percent of all reactions: eggs, peanuts, nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy and dairy.

Milk allergy - 3% of children younger than three years old are allergic to milk but 80% of children are likely to outgrow their milk allergy before they are 16, however it can affect anyone of any age. Symptoms could include a rash, upset stomach, vomiting, bloody stools and in rare cases anaphylaxis.

8. Celery allergy - symptoms of a celery allergy can come on rapidly and may include swelling of face/throat/mouth, breathing difficulties, severe asthma, nausea and vomiting. Celery can be in the form of sticks, leaves, seeds and spices. Often reactions to celery sticks are milder than a reaction caused by exposure to celery seeds.

Those who suffer with hay fever are more likely to be allergic to celery as the proteins in pollen are similar to those in raw vegetables. 9. Shellfish allergy - This allergy tends to affect adults more than children. Symptoms include a tingling mouth, swelling of the face, lips or tongue and dizziness. Again, in extreme cases this could lead to anaphylaxis. 10. Soy allergy – This fairly common allergy is quite difficult to manage because soy is in most foods including some meat products, bakery items, chocolate and cereals just to name a few. Mild symptoms include rashes or abdominal pain, but soy allergens can also cause difficulty breathing, rapid pulse, loss of consciousness and anaphylaxis. A soy allergy can be tested through a skin prick test or a blood test. TREATMENTS Avoidance - Food allergies and intolerances mean you should avoid those foods but to what extent is dependent on the severity of your symptoms. In some cases it is important if food needs to be eliminated from your diet, that a suitable alternative is consumed. For example, an allergy to milk means finding other sources of calcium. Elimination may also not be enough, if your allergy is severe you may have to ensure you never touch it, inhale it, or eat traces. Read labels closely – Read food and drink labels carefully.You might be surprised to know that even some soaps, pet foods and adhesives may have traces of a food allergen. Always Plan - Ask in restaurants what exactly has gone into the dish you wish to order. It is hard but planning definitely helps you deal with whatever you are allergic too. Prevention is key. Antihistamines - Histamines are chemicals which cause most allergy symptoms, and antihistamines block their effects. Antihistamines can be purchased over the counter, or stronger ones may be prescribed by your GP. Adrenaline - If you have a severe allergy you may be required to carry an adrenaline injection with you at all times in case of an emergency. Dietary Changes - Eating a healthy balanced diet full of vegetables and fruit will help build a healthy immune system. Drinking two cups of green tea a day may also act as a natural antihistamine and an antioxidant. Acupuncture - There are some trials which have reported favourable results after using acupuncture to treat intolerance symptoms as acupuncture may help to improve the body's functions by stimulating the nervous system and encourage self-healing. Avoid Alcohol - Beer, wine and spirits all contain histamines which worsen allergy symptoms. Alcohol can also make you feel more dehydrated, which may make symptoms seem even more uncomfortable.
