East/West Roofs…Flat Roofs…Garages…Paddocks...Barns…Stables The popularity of SolarPV panels for generating electricity continues to grow even in light of tariff reductions. The principle reason being that capital costs have fallen dramatically while electricity prices have soared. For anyone wishing to safeguard against future energy price increases and generate themselves a predictable incomestream over the next 20 years there is no better, low risk investment. The Feed-in-Tariff for generating your own electricity is still 14.9p per unit and with the overall cost of installing Solar Panels down by 60%, SolarPV is more affordable than ever.

Savings are earning a pittance in ISAs and other traditional forms of investments. The advent of SolarPV and the Government Feed-in-Tariff scheme has offered a safe investment vehicle that now yields far more than can be currently earned elsewhere, as well as a way of making fuel savings and doing your bit for the environment. Of course the basic premise is that those looking for the benefits from generating their own electricity have capital to invest. The cost of installing SolarPV panels will vary according to the size of system but 16 panels (4kW) will be under £6000, depending on your choice of panels. Most roofs have good potential; even East/West facing roofs or sheds at the bottom of the garden can still be very effective if the system is designed correctly. Even tricky shade issues can be mitigated and with the latest technology surplus electricity can be captured to heat hot water, further improving returns. In the right conditions you can be better off by up to £900 per year, effectively paying for itself in around seven years, which stacks up to a very attractive 16% return on investment. After that its pure profit, with a 20 year contract guaranteed by the government! Take control; of your energy bills and ‘Click your Roof’ today!

FASHION 100% Pure NEW Wool: Long strands from the sheep which are soft in wear and crease resistant. This is usually a double plain cloth. What is a double plain cloth? This is when two cloths are woven together at the same time. Double cloth or double weave is a kind of woven textile with two or more sets of warps and one or more sets of weft or filling. If you hold this up in the daylight you cannot see through it. Unlike a single plain cloth that the majority of ready made suits are made from.
What is it made from? by Peter Dore of Jensons When buying clothes we are usually happy, as long as it fits and looks nice. But, what is it made from? In the throw away age when things didn't look good after wearing them, it didn't matter. Times were good with loads of choices, so we would just go and buy another one. Who really looks at the care label? In the last couple of years the economy has shrunk. Companies
have to make a profit, so they started describing fabrics in ways which are not always honest. For instance 100% wool does not always mean that it is new. It could be recycled, made from second hand woollen garments that have been respun into short threads. It is the short strands that sometimes poke through other garments, causing irritation or itching. Start to look at the product label next time you go shopping.
55% Polyester, 43% Wool, 2% Elastane: A suit made from re-spun wool needs the polyester to make it durable and the elastane helps make it flexible and comfortable to wear. Viscose: is a strong fabric which looks good and makes garments bright in colour. Watch this one; never wash it because it will crease badly and need constant ironing. Linen is made from Flax. It is super cool in summer but creases badly. Nylon is crease resistant because the threads are super slim. It can cause sweating and needs cleaning frequently. Cotton is cool to wear; Ideal for summer shirts and dresses. Silk is a natural fabric and should be dry cleaned only. It is ideal for waistcoats, shirts, formal dresses and blouses.

us with a fascinating insight into the burial customs of the inhabitants of this ancient city. The location of the tombs also helps us to understand the way of life in ancient Lycia and Caria, as they believed that a winged creature carried the deceased to the after world, therefore the burial chambers were constructed on a cliff face. Whilst the entire landscape of Lycia is scattered with a selection of

fascinating funeral monuments, it is these on the Dalyan Delta that are considered the most imposing and awe-inspiring tombs of the ancient region. At night time the tombs are lit up creating a dramatic, atmospheric backdrop to the delta which can be seen for miles. Caunos itself is another fascinating attraction. The largest ancient city in the Carian era, it was constructed, according to Greek mythology, by Apollo’s grandson. Those who visit these iconic ruins can discover remains of many different parts of the old city which were uncovered during an excavation, from the ancient amphitheatre to the traditional Hellenistic and Roman temples, to name a few. Further eastwards, Kalkan lies at the heart of some of the most impressive Lycian sites. Xanthos was a site of exceptional importance in antiquity as it is thought to have been a main centre for culture and commerce. Extensive excavations and research of the area have led to the discovery of a selection of texts in the Lycian

The British Museum now houses two tombs, the Nereid monument and the Tomb of Payava, both of which were discovered at the ruins. Another tomb, known as the Harpy Tomb, is still located at the remains of the city. Only 4kms south of Xanthos, positioned on the banks of the Xanthos River, is one of the most important religious centres in the region – Letoon – where the foundations of temples can be seen. A further remain – the ancient city of Patara – can also be found in this historically rich region. Excavated in the 1980s, a magnificent Roman arch can be admired, as well as an impressive theatre. Once a prosperous

commercial city, the ruins are positioned just a short distance from Patara Beach – one of the most photographed beaches in the Mediterranean. There are also a number of other smaller sites and one of the more interesting and unusual ones is nearby Kekova which is home to the semi-sunken city of Simena. Originally a fishing village, a 2nd century earthquake had devastating effects on Simena – however it left behind an exceptional historical site. Half of the ancient houses have become submerged, with staircases leading down underwater, where the foundations of the buildings and an old harbour can be found. In 1990, this region was declared a protected area, prohibiting swimming and diving. Further north and on its own peninsula lies the unspoilt rural region of Bozburun, yet another area which is home to other interesting historical settlements located in ancient Caria. From here, you can explore the ancient Greek settlement of Knidos, located just a short drive away on the nearby Datça Peninsula, a ruin that is built partly on the mainland and partly on the Island of Triopion which, in antiquity, was connected to the mainland by a bridge.

TRAVEL AND LEISURE Most people have seen the Eden Project in Cornwall, but how about timing a trip here to coincide with the Cornwall Spring Flower Show? Everyone loves a journey by train or boat; how about a holiday combining both in Devon and Cornwall, Norfolk, the Pennines or even Scotland? If scenic ferry journeys are more your thing, there are some great circular holidays to be had in Scotland; taking in the Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland or even all three.”
The Great British Holiday When it comes to choosing a break away many of us automatically go online or get brochures from the travel agent to look beyond our own shores to possibly sunnier climes in other parts of the world.
– ranging from active adventure holidays to tailor-made tourism around fascinating towns and villages, to ultrarelaxing breaks to allow mind and body to rest and re-charge to face the rest of life.
That blinkered approach to homegrown charms means we may not appreciate the best of what this country has to offer. But, for the discerning, The Great British Holiday has become THE way to enjoy time away from home.
There are few countries in the world where so many holiday choices are available. You can hire a cottage in a remote rural spot, take over a country lodge for a family break, stay in a piece of English history, or just put your trust in a reliable travel company and let a coach whisk you away on a scenic route to a super hotel home-fromhome.
Look at the basic reality: you don’t have to worry about changing money to a different currency or learning a foreign language, agonise over flight delays, spend long hours at the airport doing nothing or deal with the often baffling laws and customs of another country. By discovering the genuine wonders of the world on your own doorstep, you plug into a much more relaxed holiday that can quickly awaken all of us to just why so many visitors from other countries converge on the UK each year as their destination of choice. For a start, there are all kinds of holidays we can take in this country
10
When you’ve got past the family holiday style of seaside breaks or activity holiday parks, you may just love the luxury and sheer lack of responsibility of being taken on a coach tour holiday. Matt Barnes - Barnes Coaches “You don’t have to travel outside of the British Isles for holidays that are exciting and interesting, while still being relaxing; you just need to choose a holiday with plenty included.
And there is just so much to see and do in this country! You can sample local ales in Devizes in Wiltshire, enjoy international arts in Salisbury and explore stone circles and Iron Age forts in the countryside. Consider an escape to the country’s largest oak forest in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, see Dover’s stunning white cliffs or visit the beautiful cathedrals of Rochester and Canterbury. Then there’s the glorious ancient woodland of the New Forest where William the Conqueror once hunted. Our first National Park in the Peak District is the scenery which inspired the Brontes, or you can view Creswell Crag’s stunning Ice Age legacy. Little around the world is as beautiful as our own Lake District and Cumbria, while the Yorkshire Dales offer mile upon mile of unspoiled landscape as a feast for the eyes and the senses. Explore the historic streets of Salisbury and Stonehenge and tuck into tasty local farmers’ produce, or wander the banks of the River Wear in Durham. Spare some time, too, to visit its iconic cathedral there before appreciating the wild and lovely countryside of the Durham Dales. Our cities have much to fascinate – from stunning landmarks

strolling about looking at tourist spots. You might prefer your walks brisk, exploring the Cornish coast, or hiking over the many English hills and dales.
Soak up the atmosphere in Bath and visit the fascinating Roman baths or wonder at York’s remarkable old buildings and visit the Shambles, voted the country’s most picturesque street.
You might be one of the thousands of people who love caravan holidays, taking your accommodation with you to the hundreds of well-organised camp sites and their useful facilities to structure your own days. You might prefer to try out wellappointed static caravans at holiday parks which also offer entertainment on your independent holiday.
Make a pilgrimage to Canterbury and discover the bloody history behind Chaucer’s tales. Or travel to our historic seats of learning and culture to stimulate the intellect and the imagination. Stratford upon Avon is home to all things Shakespeare; see works by Michaelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Picasso at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, or study Charles Darwin’s specimens at the Zoology Museum in Cambridge.
Boating holidays are more popular than ever, with the country’s wonderful network of canals and rivers introduced to new fans every year. The Lancaster Canal, for example, is one of our most scenic and gentle waterways, running for 42 lock-free miles through pleasant pasturelands,

As Robert Foulkes of Crabtree Narrowboat Hire explained: “Last year we had people in their early 20s, grandparents with their grandkids and 50-somethings whose children had left home and this was their first holiday on their own for 20 years.”
The Great British Holiday – in all its forms, price-ranges and activities or lack of them offers the freedom to choose exactly how YOU want to spend your break. And the bonus is that it’s often a brand new voyage of discovery of the fabulous place that is our country.

INTERVIEW: GLORIA HUNNIFORD
Gloria’s early days, health & more... By Angela Kelly
Gloria Hunniford was just enjoying a few weeks near Nice in France with her husband when we chatted. It marked a particularly busy time when she had been filming more programmes for the TV hit series Ripoff Britain, which had been extended
12
to cover rip-offs on holidays and on food. And Ms Hunniford, now a lovely 73 year-old with the beautiful skin and enduring looks typical of Irish people, always tries to look after herself. “You need to keep balance, avoid being thrown off kilter,” she explains. “It’s very easy when you’re busy but I do try to take holidays and eat and sleep properly.” She’s also a great fan of vitamins, which she takes each day, and admits
to “a certain amount of exercise”, usually walking the dogs or using her exercise bike in front of the TV. “I’ve just lost two stone, though,” she states. “It wasn’t a vanity thing – my sister was diagnosed with diabetes and I asked the doctor what I should do to avoid it. Losing weight seemed a sensible idea so I cut out both sugar and carbohydrates and the weight just dropped off.” It feels like the popular broadcaster has always been with us. Radio and TV audiences love her, and Gloria has the enduring charm that people of all ages and both sexes find attractive and easygoing. I once stood next to her in an aiport queue as she took a flight to her native Ireland and her fellow travellers were plainly fascinated by the VIP in their
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
midst, but also very warm to her. She was named after the actress Gloria Swanson but early on she became a singer, entertaining at her dad’s concerts. He was a newspaper man by day and a magician by night. She spent time in Canada, singing on TV and performing listeners’ Irish song requests on the radio, then returned home where she joined ITV’s new Ulster Television as a production assistant. She continued her singing, though, and got a record in the Ulster charts in 1969. After she was interviewed on BBC radio, the producer asked her to audition as an interviewer, then hired her for Northern Ireland’s equivalent of the Today programme. She cut her teeth on news and current affairs, moved on to a nightly news programme and finally ended up invited to work in London. Here, her friendly Irish accident and warm manner quickly won over fans. She filled in for Jimmy Young while he was on holiday, and the banter between her and Terry Wogan – whom she already knew – at the end of the programme swiftly enhanced her reputation. People felt she was a familiar friend on the air. She was given her own show, Gloria Hunniford’s Open House, and was a daily TV fixture for five years. She still makes appearances on The One Show and became a regular once more on our screens with another very popular series Cash in the Attic, which she loves. “They’ve got about 20 programmes already made but they’ve also now launched an interactive website and an app which is all very exciting because you can go onto the site anytime you want to, anywhere,” she says enthusiastically. “I love that programme – I’m a great fan of antiques and I’ve collected them myself for years. I collected so many angels and cherubs one of my sons forbade me to bring any more home!
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
And I’ve also collected teapots and jewellery crosses.” She loves the surprises that people get when items they discover go to auction, and thoroughly enjoys the celebrity version. “I’m always amazed at how generous the celebrities are in donating items that can be sold for charity,” she adds. The Rip-off Britain series is another favourite with her. “I think we came along at just the right time with that brand,” she states. “The recession was just beginning and people felt even more aggrieved if they were being ripped off.” She is proud of the fact that the evening version draws a regular audience of 5.5 million viewers “and the daytime programme has very respectable figures, too,” she asserts. Work is plainly far from drying up for the evergreen presenter but she’s quick to state that she actually wants to work. “I enjoy work, and I’d hope to keep on working for as long as people want me to,” she adds. She and her second husband, Stephen Way, live in Sevenoaks, Kent, and family life is obviously very important to her. Her presenter daughter, Caron Keating, died from breast cancer after a brave fight in 2004 and any parent can start to imagine the personal devastation that brought. “I’ve had loss before, but nothing prepares you for the terrible darkness that descends when a child dies,” says Gloria. “It’s like trying to climb out of a big hole by your fingertips and, just when you think you’re at the top, something drags you back. “I felt like that for a long time, and many of the people who contacted us when Caron died – we had more than 8,000 letters – said it never really goes away.” But one person’s letter did strike a chord with Gloria, and showed the way ahead for her. It was someone who
“ I enjoy work, and I’d hope to keep on working for as long as people want me to” pointed out the importance of carrying Caron’s spirit forward, “I just felt then that I knew what I wanted to do,” she recalls. Gloria founded the Caron Keating Foundation, administered by the family and with all the funds raised being used to help charities concerned with all kinds of cancer. The result is that, over the past years, the foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds which have gone to projects at 47 different cancer charities all around the country. This is obviously a source of some consolation to Gloria and her family, although you suspect that Caron is in her thoughts every day. “Someone said that people never die if they remain on the lips of the living,” she states, “and I believe that.”

Consider finally getting your dental work sorted out or having your TEETH WHITENED if you’re unhappy with your smile. It is, after all, often the first thing that people notice about you and there are plenty of excellent treatments around. Your dentist can advise here. It may be that you would like to ditch those specs and improve your EYESIGHT. Laser surgery has come on remarkably in the last few years, so shop around for the best and most trusted treatment. Certainly, for many of us, our wishlist contains COSMETIC SURGERY for a crooked nose, saggy chin or to get rid of those frown lines. Choose a reputable clinic or salon and give yourself the face or other identified body part you’ve always wanted.
Make 2014 Your Year! By Angela Kelly
Most of us treat a New Year in the same way – we mentally list all the things we want to change in the next 12 months …. but then do little about it until the next new year! Well, here’s the chance to make 2014 YOUR year and change all those areas of your life with which you’re unhappy. And that doesn’t necessarily just apply to your home and your job but also the shape you’re in and many of the things you might like to change about yourself if you just could. For a start, are you happy with the shape you’re in? Even the most gorgeous celebrities or top models complain about some element of their bodies, so the rest of us are bound to have a list of “improvements”! Weight is an obvious one. So, if you’ve
14
been promising yourself to drop a few pounds – or a stone or two – join a slimming club now, or put yourself on a good WEIGHT-LOSS programme. Start this journey with a quick visit to your GP, of course, to check that there’s no medical stumbling blocks involved but after that – ready, steady, slim! Complement your shape as the pounds disappear, too, with a new approach to your FITNESS regime. Gym membership these days is generally very economical, especially if you attend regularly, and you’ve got the added bonus of having expert help on hand and being surrounded by likeminded people. Make a gym visit part of your regular routine as a way of ensuring you keep happy and healthy – and trimmer – and you’ll keep that hard-won weightloss off for good. Perhaps you want to try out a NEW HAIRSTYLE – a fresh, shorter look or a change of colour. Consult your hairdresser and take his or her advice on cut, condition and just what suits you.
This may be the year that you decide to MOVE HOUSE. The housing market is definitely much more buoyant and all the signs are good for getting the home of your dreams. Local estate agents and mortgage advisors are always happy to help you with your personal home possibilities. Or, it could be that you like your current address but want to put in an EXTENSION or CONSERVATORY. A local builder can give you a quote without charge for an extension, and it’s certainly worth talking to an architect about making the most of this planned space first. They’re the experts on coming up with clever plans and utilising extensions in the most practical way to suit your family’s lifestyle. Modern conservatories provide an extra room that can be used throughout the year. If you go online to see the kinds of extensions and conservatories available, you can mix and match the best of ideas to suit your plans. Your property may just need the kind of brightening up that a good DECORATOR can provide. Sometimes, changing the colourscheme and furnishings really cheers up rooms and transforms the home. It may be that you’re at that stage of life when you want to DOWNSIZE, perhaps realise some of the capital in your property. If you’re in those golden years and want tailor-made
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
accommodation, it’s definitely worth considering a retirement village or sheltered accommodation. You may decide that a New Year is just the time to change from struggling along with a large and expensive property to something more suitable and economical. There is a wealth of suitable places these days, including comfortable modern apartments needing the minimum of maintenance, and with staff on-site to support you daily. And the bonus is that you’re in a community of older people also determined to enjoy life! Of course, it may be that you’ve been promising yourself that special HOLIDAY for several years. So, this could well be the time to consider going to Australia or New Zealand, Macau or Malibu. Consult a reliable travel agent for the kind of personal
service you’ll need for the trip of a lifetime. It may be that you’ve got a close relative or friend in a far-flung spot that you’d love to visit but never thought you could. Now is just the time to see if this is a possibility, and how it could be achieved. Perhaps you’re determined to finally go to a special SPORTING OCCASION, like the Winter Olympics in Russia in February, the World Twenty20 cricket in Bangladesh in April or the Masters’ golf in Augusta that month. Again, your travel can create a personal travel itinerary that will ensure you realise your dream trip, and enjoy the experience every bit as much as you thought you would. Your New Year Resolutions may be far more modest than any of these,
although they may well enhance your life just as much. You may decide that in 2014 you will definitely QUIT SMOKING so take a good look at all the products around to actively help you with this – there’s everything from patches to e-cigarettes these days, hypnotherapists and local health expert support on offer so there’s really no excuse. Or you may have decided to LEARN a musical instrument or a foreign language. All it takes is that initial decision that you’re not going to leave things for another year. You’re not simply going to say “I wish I could ….” You’re actually going to do it!

IN THE HOME
HOW COLOURS CAN CHANGE A ROOM It’s surprising how much the colours and fabrics in a room can vastly improve and change the look of it. Picking a new colour for the walls, or buying a new rug or carpet can mix up the style of your home and make it look brand new. Colours in the living area are so important and have a big impact on the feel of the room and the mood of the people within it. Painting a room is a much quicker and cheaper way of decorating because it is then easier to change and redecorate in the future, without the hassle of removing and replacing wallpaper. If you are looking for a warm and energetic environment, try a red or orange tone. This may not be suitable for those wanting to relax with the family as they are loud colours, but if you are the type of person who likes entertaining, then the warmth will brighten up the vibe of the room. Yellow is the perfect warm colour for livening up your space, but try to keep it to a feature or accent wall. Too much of it can be overpowering. For those folk who want to feel laid back and relaxed, a cooler blue or green room might be more suitable. Do be careful of the shades you pick however. An icy blue may make visitors feel unwelcome. A warmer shade, such as turquoise, may give the desired effect you want, but make others feel more welcome as well. For a more sophisticated feel, stick to neutral tones, whites and creams. Not only do these provide a blank canvas to incorporate furniture and patterns, but allow the room to become a peaceful setting, which looks elegant and refined. Combinations of fabrics and patterns are also hugely inspiring when it comes to decorating and can create a
theme for your house that you may wish to follow; from a cosy cottage to a Tuscan villa. If your tastes cater to soft pastels, floral fabrics and rustic wood furnishings, then a cottage style home may be your cup of tea, where as finding wallpapers with an old plaster texture, tapestry style rugs and cushions with gold, coppers and greens infused can give the feel of Tuscany in your home. Carpets are a highly important part of a room. Many people prefer plain, block colour materials on their floors, which are great for flexibility when designing and changing styles. However they can make a large room look empty. Going for a patterned carpet might seem a

bit risky, but if the right one is selected, it can make a big difference. Patterns can create a focal point in a big room if you feel like keeping the furniture quite simple, but try and avoid busy patterns in a small room as this can make the space seem closed in and cluttered.
FINAL TIPS... • Fabrics can easily change up a room, don’t be afraid to experiment.
Fabric texture is also important. Kristen Schmitt says on Better Homes and Gardens that: “Texture adds dimension to a room. It appeals to our senses, both visual and tactile, which makes the room interesting.” Add some pillows and cushions to your bed and sofa; fluffy, ruffled, floral, tartan, anything that takes your fancy. Even a textured throw for the end of the bed can provide a contrast in a room. Bring in a patterned rug to create a focal point and make small rooms look larger. Round shapes in a square room can also soften the space. Don’t be afraid of contrasting patterns and colours either, but try not to go beyond three and use samples to decide on the best combinations.
• Be aware of light and colours. Warmer light coming into your house allows for cooler colours. With colder light, try a warmer colour. • Something as simple as adding a mirror can instantly make a room look bigger. • Patterns are good, but don’t go overboard.
You may think that adding a splash of colour to your home will get expensive but that isn’t the case. Paint is a much cheaper option than wallpaper, but how about just repainting and wallpapering one wall in a vibrant colour or pattern to add some variation. If you can’t afford a new sofa or lounge chair, find some new fabric you like and get the existing furniture reupholstered.
• Buy a signature piece of furniture or rug you like and base the colour scheme around that. • Bright ornaments and furniture can look great in an otherwise plain, white room.
Wooden furniture is easy to transform too. Take an old chair that needs a make over, or buy a cheap one from a second hand shop. All it needs is sanding down and a coat of paint, to fit whatever mood you are going for in the room, and you have a brand new piece of furniture. The same can be done with tables, cupboards, and fireplaces.

An additional room to enjoy all year round One of the fundamental requirements and first requests made by people contemplating a conservatory or glazed garden room is that they wish to us it THROUGH THE YEAR, not solely a glazed room for grey Summer days.
The higher the U-value figure, the greater the heat loss will be; conversely, the lower the U-value figure, the lower the heat loss. Remember! for an energy efficient conservatory, compare U-values and GO FOR LOW.
Those familiar with well designed glazed sun rooms, may suggest they are not really suitable for that purpose. However, the many thousands of people who have such buildings and find them to be by far their most popular and well used room, thoroughly wish to disagree!
With our latest range of intelligent Smart Glass for roofs in active blue, aqua, neutral or bronze tints and our Wall Glass: Total 1.1-1.2 U-Value crystal clear ‘planitherm’, argon gas filled cavity double glazed units. Europe’s top selling solar controlled ‘Low E’ glass made in Britain.
Many enjoyable evenings are spent well into the early hours, comfortably enjoying the unique opportunity of dining and being entertained in a conservatory. The temperature outside was well below freezing and often snow on the ground. Heating was of course required - but not much more than will be required within your home if the conservatory is designed and constructed to a suitably high specification. If you’re pushed for space, and have considered moving to a larger home, think again. For a fraction of the cost of moving, you could install a conservatory. You’ve acquired a new room, full of light. A fabulous place to have your morning coffee and enjoy views into the garden. You can also reflect on the cheering thought that you’ve added around 15% to the value of your house.
The Conservatory Centre’s Large Showroom at Cheney Manor
The Conservatory Centre based at Cheney Manor have a large showroom displaying a wide range of styles and finishes. They provide a full conservatory package including tiling and furniture all under one roof, using specialist professional teams of surveyors and fitters. The whole project from initial design to completion usually takes only six to eight weeks.
Can a Conservatory be energy efficient?
Stephen Wright site manager of The Conservatory Centre explains: “A conservatory which is cold and expensive to heat in winter and unbearably hot in summer would represent poor value whatever the price paid. We all would like a room that we can enjoy in the cold winter months and hot summer days. So how do we achieve this? How do we compare what’s on offer? Quite simply the term ‘U-value’ is used as a measure of heat transfer through a given material. The huge area of glass, and maybe polycarbonate in the roof of a conservatory, if not in line with the very latest technology can reduce your investment to little more than a glorified greenhouse! 18
This glass really does make a difference to the all year round comfort of the conservatory. Our customers who have experienced the difference tell us this! Ordinary Pilkington double glazed units have a U value of 1.9 and will lose 2 times more heat through the glass. Another type of heat retaining glass, sometimes called low e glass or Pilkington K has a U-value of 1.6 which, although better will still let in 50% more heat than ‘Planitherm’. Furthermore, crystal clear Planitherm Total 1.1-1.2 does not suffer the hazy sheen often associated with Pilkington K glass. As an added bonus, Planitherm Total 1.1-1.2 glass reduces 70% of harmful radiation passing through the glass, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful effects, and reducing fabric fading. In summer this amazing glass technology with a .74% solar factor and a .85 shading coefficient keeps your conservatory comfortably cool. (g ISO905 M1)

Frames: Bowater ‘Esthetique’ 1.1 U-value, 5 chamber PVCu frames. A few years ago, virtually all the PVCu frames systems incorporated 3 lateral internal insulating chambers, which gave the frames a U-value of around 1.8 Advances in glass technology resulted in a glass centre pain U- value as low as 1.1-1.2 a clear gap between the energy efficiency of glass and PVCu frames. In many European countries, 1.1-1.2 centre pane u value glass is the norm (Austria, for example is 100% 1.1-1.2 U-value glass). Taking into account the close proximity of the glass to the frame, this clear disparity in u values presented a problem for the more responsible PVCu frame designers. Moisture in the air is attracted to the coolest surface (the frame) forming condensation, just one reason why frames and glass should have similar U-values. The ideal conservatory will have 1.4 U-value frames 1.2 U-value glass. As a major European manufacturer, selling frames across Europe, Bowater Group Laboratories accepted the challenge to match the frame and glass U-values, a few years ago Bowater announced the development of it’s top of the range ‘esthetique’ - Europe’s first fully sculptured 5 chamber frame, driving down the U-value to just 1.4 with zero air leakage, an incredible achievement. The majority of PVCu frames (even those of many leading brands still being sold in 2014) still incorporate the old 3 chamber design, with a U-value of 1.8, losing 60% more heat through the frame, creating dreaded condensation! Many rival companies who copied the 5 chamber design have still only achieved U-values of around 1.4-1.5 illustrating the technological superiority of the Bowater Group testing laboratories. Our ultraframe roofs with vented eaves and ridge beam : 1.2 U-value polycarbonate, 35mm thick 7 wall construction comprising of 6 insulating compartments with optional ‘sunshield’ Cheaper typical 25mm thick polycarbonate, made up of 5 layered frame walls, with just 4 insulating compartments, has a U-value of just 1.6, losing 33% more heat, straight through the roof. Should you be concerned about overheating in direct summer sun, The Conservatory Centre will install SUNSHIELD protection free of charge. SUNSHIELD prevents most of the sun’s heat passing through the roof. Now as standard for 2014 secure ventilation can be achieved through your roof ridge and around the perimeter. Both create thermal air flows in the conservatory, cooling and relieving stuffiness in hot weather, these may be closed as required. Remember - Compare U-values and ‘GO FOR LOW’. One of the many testimonials from The Conservatory Centre, Swindon. “Both Joanne and I had to write and let you know how happy we are with our new conservatory and are very pleased we decided to go with The Conservatory Centre. Swindon Safe & Warm - helping you stay warm and reducing your energy bills this winter! Over the last two and a half years the Safe & Warm programme has been helping households across Swindon to make their homes warmer and cheaper to heat, as well as reducing the risk from falls and fires in the home. We have spoken with over 16,000 households during this time, providing insulation and heating measures to thousands of homes saving an estimated £171,765 each year on residents’ fuel bills. We have also identified over £2million of unclaimed benefits for those struggling financially, adding on average about £3,000 annually to the income of those households. Alongside this, we have installed hundreds of measures (such as grab rails and steps) to reduce the likelihood of a fall in the home, over 3,000 smoke alarms to improve fire safety, and we have provided much needed advice on reducing energy use in the home, switching energy suppliers, reducing condensation 20
and damp problems and controlling heating. The Safe & Warm programme is drawing to a close in 2014, so we are having a final push on enabling as many households as possible to have great value energy saving measures installed. While in previous years there have been insulation schemes and initiatives that have given cavity wall and loft insulation away for free, this has not been the case since the start of 2013. Changes to the Energy Company funded insulation schemes have resulted in far fewer households being eligible for any support at all, meaning most have been faced with having to pay full price for these measures. This can be as much as £2,000 for cavity wall and loft insulation for a detached property. In order to help those most in need of support this winter, we have identified funds to be able to offer cavity
wall and loft insulation for eligible households for just £50 per measure. This is a limited offer; due to end by 31st March 2014 (earlier if the funding is used up) so please enquire early to avoid disappointment. It is for people who own their own home or rent their home from a private landlord. If you live in a social housing property, you should speak to your landlord about any insulation improvements. Please see our advert on the next page for more information.

Up to 25% of your heat could be lost through the roof
“We are really pleased to be able to provide this much improved insulation offer this winter. Cavity wall and loft insulation are still the most cost effective ways of reducing heat loss in the home, but for most of this year they have been unobtainable for many people. With potential savings of £140 a year on your fuel bills for cavity wall alone, these really are measures that everyone should be considering to reduce their bills and improve the warmth in their homes.” “This is the only insulation scheme backed by Swindon Borough Council, and we have targeted the help at those who we feel can benefit the most from these measures. I want to stress that after March 2014 we may not be able to repeat this campaign again, so please enquire now if you are eligible for the offer.”

Moving home can be one of the most stressful things any of us do whatever stage we have reached in our lives. For the over 50s it may mean the sale of a much loved home with lots of happy memories and might coincide with the loss of a partner, failing health or lifestyle change on stopping work and if you haven’t bought or sold a house for a while it might seem overwhelming. At Bevirs we try to give our clients practical guidance as well as legal advice. No query is too small. We are here to help. Derek Brown, Head of Residential Conveyancing at Bevirs Solicitors thinks that practical guidance is just as important as the legal work and has put together some frequently asked questions. Q. How much will it cost? A. Check your cost estimate includes all legal fees, VAT and Disbursements and that there are no “hidden” extras such as extra fees for acting for a Lender or preparing a Stamp Duty Land Tax Return. If you are selling a leasehold property you are likely to have to pay the management company to provide information. Q. I am selling my home, can I get any paperwork ready? A. If works have been carried out on your property, e.g. building works, damp or woodworm treatment, double glazing, electrical works, the installation of a central heating boiler, then it is helpful to provide copies of the relevant Planning Permission, Building Regulations Approvals, Completion Certificates, Compliance Certificates and Guarantees as soon as possible. If you are selling a Leasehold property, then the last three year Service Charge accounts and Ground Rent receipts would be very useful.
Q. Do I need a Survey on the property I am buying? A. You should always consider having a separate Survey carried out which could highlight an issue of repair which requires considerable expense to put right and if discovered at an early stage, it may be possible to negotiate terms with the Seller. Q. Do I need a Trust Deed? A. If you are buying a property with another person perhaps another family member then you will need to think about the type of joint ownership you should have and whether you need to record what each of your shares are in the property and what will happen if either of you dies or wants to sell. A Trust Deed is a good place to record your agreement. Please discuss it as soon as possible.
Q. When do I need to insure the property?
Q. How do I know I will get a good job done?
A. If you are buying a freehold property then you will need to have Buildings Insurance in place for exchange of contracts (Leaseholds are usually dealt with by the Freeholder).
A. You could use a firm which have the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Standard (CQS) mark.
Q. Do I need a deposit? A. The standard provision is that a 10% deposit will be needed. However different amounts are often paid and if you are selling as well as buying you may be able to use the deposit you receive on your sale for your purchase. Please discuss this early. Q. But they told me... A. Please bear in mind that the Contract between you and your Seller / Buyer is what is written down in the Contract itself and it is therefore important that any agreements reached between you and your Seller/Buyer are reported as soon as possible, so they can be included in the Contract. Q. I am not sure about... A. If there is anything at all that you are not sure about, fencing, an odd looking boundary, access, loft conversions, light fittings, mention it as soon as possible. It is much better to raise it early than at the last minute.

FOOD & DRINK - LOW FAT WINTER WARMERS
Si King and Dave Myers are self-confessed food lovers. Food isn’t just fuel to them, it’s their life. But like many of us they’ve found that the weight has crept on over the years. Si and Dave have come up with tasty recipes that are low in calories and big in flavour, and many we have featured in 50 Plus Magazine.
OLD FASHIONED CHICKEN AND VEGETABLE STEW
This is real food for real people, not skinny minnies. They are ideas for family meals.
The cider and bacon add a touch of sweetness and extra flavour to the chicken and veg, making this a lovely supper dish. Keep it low-fat by removing the skin from the chicken legs before cooking and using as little oil as possible for browning the meat and vegetables. SERVES 4 3 tbsp plain flour 2 tsp dried thyme 4 chicken leg quarters 2 tbsp sunflower oil 4 rashers of rindless smoked back bacon, cut into 1cm-wide strips 2 medium onions, chopped 2 celery sticks, thinly sliced 150g small chestnut mushrooms, wiped and sliced or quartered if large 500ml bottle of dry cider 300ml chicken stock, (made with 1 chicken stock cube) 2 bay leaves 400g Chantenay or other small fat carrots, trimmed and peeled 2 slender leeks, trimmed and cut into 2cm slices flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper. METHOD Mix the flour and thyme with a good pinch of salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper in a large strong 32
freezer bag. Strip the skin off the chicken legs and put them on a board. Break the joint of each leg by bending it in the opposite direction. You may hear a small crack. Cut each leg quarter in half with a sturdy knife to give 8 chicken portions. Using a good set of kitchen scissors, trim off any visible fat. Put the chicken portions in the freezer bag, a few at a time, and shake well until they are evenly coated in the flour. Heat the oil in a large non-stick fying pan over a medium heat and fry the chicken, a few pieces at a time, until golden brown all over. As they are browned, transfer the chicken pieces to a large flameproof casserole dish. Preheat the oven to 1800C/Fan 1600C/ Gas 4. Put the bacon, onions and celery in the pan used for browning the chicken and fry for 4-5 minutes over medium heat until lightly browned, stirring often.
Add the mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes more, then tip everything into the casserole dish with the chicken pieces. Sprinkle in any flour remaining in the freezer bag and stir well. Pour about half the cider into the frying pan and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon to lift any sediment from the bottom. Simmer for a few seconds, then pour into the casserole. Add the rest of the cider and the stock, then stir in the carrots and bay leaves and bring to a simmer on the hob. Cover with a lid and cook in the centre of the over for 1 hour, then remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the leeks. Pop the dish back into the oven for a further 30-40 minutes or until the chicken is tender and the sauce thickened. Serve with some green beans or spring onions. 435 Calories per portion.

LAMB, SPINACH AND POTATO CURRY This is a low-cal version of Dave’s favourite curry - saag gosht - becuase he couldn’t bear to it give it up. If you are running short of time, cut out the fresh garlic, ginger and chilli - the curry will still taste great. The recipe contains potatoes so there is no need to serve it with extra rice.
SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH SMOKED SALMON SERVES 6 600g lamb leg steaks (about 4 steaks) 1 tbsp sunflower oil 2 large onions, roughly chopped 4 large garlic cloves, peeled and roughly chopped 25g chunk of fresh root ginger, peeled and roughly chopped 1 plump fresh chilli, (deseeded if you like) 75g medium or mild curry paste (depending on your taste) 400g can of chopped tomatoes 350g potatoes, preferably Maris Pipers, peeled and cut into 3cm chunks 450ml water 2 bay leaves 1 tsp flaked sea salt, plus extra for seasoning the meat 1 tsp caster sugar 3 ripe medium tomatoes, quartered 100g young spinach leaves freshly ground black pepper METHOD Trim the lamb of any hard fat and cut the meat into rough chunks of about 3cm. Season with salt and pepper. Heat a teaspoon of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the lamb in 2 batches until lightly coloured on all sides. Transfer the lamb to a plate as soon as each batch is browned. Heat the remaining oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and add the onions. Cook over a medium heat for
6-8 minutes until they’re softened and lightly browned, stirring regularly. Turn down the heat, add the garlic, ginger, chilli and curry paste and cook for 5 minutes more, stirring frequently. Remove from the heat and blitz the onion mixture with a stick blender until blended to a purée. Or you can let the mixture cool for a few minutes, then blend it in a food processor before tipping it back into the casserole. Return the casserole to the hob over a medium heat. Preheat the oven to 1900C/Fan 1700C/Gas 5. Add the browned lamb to the spiced onion purée in the dish and cook over a gentle heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring. Add the chopped tomatoes, potatoes, water, bay leaves, teaspoon of salt and sugar. Bring everything to a gentle simmer, then cover with a lid and place the casserole in the oven for 1 hour and 30 minutes or until the lamb is tender and the sauce has thickened. Check after 1 hour and give the contents of the casserole dish a good stir. Take the dish out of the oven and remove the lid. Stir in the quartered tomatoes and spinach leaves. Cover once more and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft and the spinach has wilted. Serve hot with some spoonfuls of fatfree yoghurt if you fancy.
This is a treat - light but tasty and packed with protein. It takes next to no time to prepare and makes a really special weekend breakfast or brunch. Shows that you can breakfast like a king and still keep the calories under control. SERVES 2 4 medium eggs 1 tbsp freshly snipped chives, plus a few extra to garnish(optional) 15g butter 4 slices of smoked salmon (about 75g) 1 English muffin, cut in half flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper METHOD Beat the eggs with a pinch of flaked sea salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Use a metal whisk and make sure you beat the eggs really well. Stir in the chives if you’re using them. Melt the butter in a medium non-stick saucepan over a low heat. Pour the beaten eggs into the pan and cook very gently for 2 minutes, stirring slowly until the eggs are softly scrambled. Remove from the heat and stir for a few seconds more - the eggs will continue to cook for a while. While the eggs are cooking, toast the muffin and put 1 half on each plate, cut side up. Spoon the scrambled eggs over the muffins, add the slices of smoked salmon and season with a little more black pepper. Garnish with extra chives if you wish. Serve immediately.

You’ve been out for the evening. It’s cold, it’s wet, you’re tired and you just want to get home. But have you ever stopped to think whether the driver that you have flagged down will get you to your destination? No matter how keen you are to get home at the end of the evening, you should never be tempted to get into an unlicensed taxi.
Swindon Borough Council licence two types of vehicles: n Taxis (Hackney Carriage/Black Cabs) l
are London-style cabs, and are all wheelchair accessible can be flagged down on the street or at an authorised rank, or pre-booked
l display white rear taxi licence plates and a smaller plate in the passenger compartment visible to the passenger
charge metered fares that are regulated by the Council. l
n Private Hire Vehicles (saloon type vehicle) l
display yellow rear taxi licence plates and a small vehicle plate positioned on the passenger side of the front window screen
l display stickers with the name of the private hire company l
charge fares set by the private hire companies
l can only be pre-booked through a private hire company.
All operators, who control firms (taxi bases) where private hire bookings are accepted or invited, must also be licensed by Swindon Borough Council. In order to obtain an Operators licence, the prospective operator must satisfy the Council criteria, making sure she/he is aware of his/her responsibilities. 34
All drivers must have the appropriate licence to drive licensed vehicles i.e. a driver of a Hackney Carriage (black cab) must hold a hackney carriage driver licence and a driver of a private hire vehicle, must hold a private driver licence. All drivers must wear their licence badge. For your safety, ONLY use a licensed vehicle. Licensed drivers have been fully vetted and are passed as medically fit. You must always ensure you travel in a licensed taxi and private hire vehicle by checking the vehicle’s signage or plate and the driver’s badge. NEVER get into a private hire vehicle you haven’t pre-booked – it WON’T be insured to carry you and may not even be licensed.
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
Here are our top tips for staying safe when travelling by taxi:
Fares are based on three elements: l
The time of day The time taken to complete the journey l The length of journey l
Fares charged by Private Hire vehicles are not controlled by the Council and you are advised to agree a fare with the Operator when booking your journey. Please remember a Hackney Carriage can be flagged down and booked in the street or at a taxi rank. Private Hire Vehicles must be pre-booked through an Operators base. If the journey is not pre-booked, the insurance cover on the vehicle will be invalid.
If you wish to make a complaint about your journey in a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire vehicle please try to obtain the following information: l
Driver’s badge details Vehicle Plate number l Vehicle registration number l Details of journey (from and to) l The name of the Operator you booked the journey through l Your contact details l
1.
Don’t go alone. Travel with a friend and leave the vehicle together.
2.
Call home (or pretend) on the way. Give the registration number and driver description or badge number. If the driver is legitimate, they won’t mind.
3.
Ask the name of the driver when you book and make sure it’s that driver that picks you up.
4.
If you chat with the driver, don’t give out personal details. Sit in the back of the taxi.
5.
Carry a personal safety alarm and know how to use it.

Other Useful Advice Please do not phone several companies and take the first car to arrive. This only makes the situation worse for everyone, including the drivers who have made a wasted journey. Most operators now have caller-ID and you may have difficulty in the future in getting a booking accepted. Do not take a car booked by someone else – they want to get home safely too! If you get into a private hire vehicle without pre-booking it (i.e. if you stop it or find it in the street) you may not be insured. Private hire drivers call this ‘flying’ and they know they are breaking the law. If the vehicle is involved in an accident you will experience difficulty in claiming for any injuries sustained. Have respect for the driver and his vehicle – do not eat, drink or smoke in the vehicle.

WHEN WE RECEIVE YOUR FORM Your complaint will be allocated to an Enforcement Officer who will make contact with you. The Enforcement Officer will fully investigate your complaint and consider all evidence available before making a decision on the action that needs to be taken. You will be kept informed of the progress of the enquiry and any subsequent action taken and the reasons for that action.
And finally – do not forget to pay the driver. He has rendered a service and is entitled to the fare. If you do not pay you may end up in court Hackney Carriage fares are set by the Council and a Fare Chart should be carried in each licensed Hackney Carriage.

LAW
Feel Free to enjoy Your Retirement with some simple Legal Planning Wills The most important consideration is to make a Will. This is the only way of ensuring your property and affairs benefit those whom you would wish to do so. People who do not make a Will are leaving unnecessary work, complications and costs to their family. If you don’t make a Will the “Intestacy Rules” will decide which family members will receive your money and possessions after you die. Your estate does not automatically pass to a surviving husband, wife or civil partner as most people presume. Unmarried partners will receive absolutely nothing often causing financial hardship and distress. Surely it would be better to make sure that the people you wanted to benefit following your death was controlled by you?
36
If you already have a Will it is also important to consider reviewing it. Changes in family, financial circumstances or the law may mean existing Wills may no longer reflect your current wishes or include unnecessary complications. A recent survey by Saga in March indicated that over third of over 50s could have out of date wills as family or financial circumstances have changed. Also significant changes to Inheritance Tax for married couples in 2007 may make Wills prior to this date no longer appropriate. “Home made” Wills and those prepared by Will Writers with often limited or no legal training are frequently either fully or partially invalid. As these errors only arise following a death when you cannot rectify matters, surely it is better to have the peace of mind your Will is fully valid and tailored personally to your wishes by specialist solicitors.

Lasting Power of Attorney Have you considered what would happen if you were unable to manage your financial affairs or make decisions over your healthcare treatments due to accidents, old age or illness? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to appoint the person or people you would like to take those key decisions for you. Without it, a family member or friend would have to make an expensive and time consuming Court application and suffer annual administrative requirements. It is important to note that an LPA does not take away your independence or control whilst you have capacity and you can limit the decisions you may wish your Attorney(s) to take on your behalf. An LPA can only be drawn up whilst you have mental capacity and whilst it might sound daunting, the key is to deal with it sooner rather than later whilst your health is not an issue. Why delay? Call us to discuss today.
Asset Protection & Long Term Care Costs
residential care in the future. Most people are concerned about funding long term residential care with an average cost of ÂŁ700 per week. Currently, if your assets exceed ÂŁ23,250 (including the value of your property) then you will be self-funding and have to pay for your care yourself with the exception of certain medical conditions. Life savings are being decimated and family homes intended to pass as Inheritance are sold for those without planning in place. As the need for residential care approaches, people may be tempted to transfer their homes into the names of children or to give away large sums of money. If you do so and the Local Authority claim you have purposely done so to avoid the asset being used to pay for care, you can still be treated as owning that asset. There is also a greater risk that children may get divorced, have financial difficulties or predecease you causing someone outside the family to get their share leading to you finding finance to buy them out of a property or even losing your own home. Steps can be taken to preserve your assets from funding long term care but these have to be taken whilst you are in good health. It is vital to take expert legal advice to fully understand your options as early as possible to increase the chance of protecting your hard-earned wealth. Pooleys Solicitors have vast experience in helping people protect their property so you know you and your family are in safe hands.

Always check with your pharmacist or doctor to ensure that your medication will not adversely affect your driving. Did you know that some prescription drugs or over-the-counter remedies can:-
• • • •
Cause drowsiness Affect your concentration Reduce your reaction times Impair your overall driving ability
AND please remember you are also breaking the law if you do not use your seatbelt
How does your grandchild measure up for their car seat? Questions & Answers With Thameswood Vets I have a springer spaniel that really suffers with his ears, my vet has put him on steroids – are there any side effects to using steroids long term? Yes, indeed there are side effects to long term steroid treatments. The choice to use them as a long-term treatment is usually a carefully made balance with close monitoring to ensure optimum benefit with minimal side-effects. Depending on the dose, increased appetite, thirst and urination are the most obvious clinical side-effects of steroid use which can lead to dogs and cat ‘piling on the pounds’. The less obvious side-effects would be on the organs, immune-system and overall body condition. This is more prominent when steroid are used systemically (into the body system via injections/tablets) although some topical steroid use (onto the skin surface) may also be absorbed and have these effects, though less quickly.
This is why Veterinary Surgeons conduct routine blood tests when they have patients on steroid treatment, to assess the side effects being caused by such drugs.
My dog has quite a sensitive stomach. Will hypoallergenic food(s) help her condition?
Veterinary surgeons generally only opt for long-term steroid treatment if all other avenues have been exhausted and the patient’s quality of life would suffer without it.
Having a dog with a sensitive stomach can be tricky to manage; I know this from having such a dog. If this is caused purely by sensitivity and not a more serious condition, e.g. irritable bowel disorder, then figuring out what foods set him/her off can be key.
My daughter has just bought a house rabbit for my grandson, do rabbits need vaccinations like other animals? Yes, they absolutely do. However, the vaccinations for rabbits are for 2 rabbit specific diseases: Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) Both of these are extremely lifethreatening and highly infectious but can easily be prevented with routine annual vaccinations. We also recommend worming, insurance among other essentials for healthy rabbits. Most Veterinary surgeries will have upto-date leaflets and information on rabbit welfare, or you can go to the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund website: www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk for all you need to know.
Many different ingredients can cause sensitivities. For some, a rich protein source can cause upset whereas, in others, the carbohydrate source may be the problem. Here is when hypoallergenic dog foods come into play. They are designed to include ingredients less likely to upset tummies and, most often than not, contain ingredients not widely used in ‘normal’ dog foods e.g. salmon and potato. The idea being that your dogs’ digestive system will not have experienced these ingredients before, will not be sensitive to them and will be able to digest it more easily. It is always important to remember that whenever introducing a new diet, to do so gradually over a period of about 2 weeks. Some dogs are so sensitive that they may require a prescription diet from your Veterinary Surgeon. In other cases, the problem may not be dietary at all and you may need to conduct further investigations.

HEALTH
Don’t suffer in silence Writes Kelly Spencer Depending on the type of arthritis you suffer from, there are a range of different symptoms that can affect a person. However, there are some that are common and similar across all types, to help you recognise symptoms of developing arthritis. Most typical is pain, with tenderness and swelling in the joint areas, but people may also experience restricted movement around the joint, warmth and redness in the affected area, weakness and muscle wasting.
Arthritis is a very common condition, known to cause pain and inflammation within the joints of the body. People of all ages can suffer from it and in the UK alone, around 10 million are known to have it. Although there are many types of arthritis, from ankylosing spondylitis to gout, the two most common types are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. All forms have a variety of differing symptoms and issues that affect the person with the condition. Osteoarthritis is the most common form and affects around 8.5 million people in the UK. This occurs when cartilage (the squashy tissue between the bones) wastes away over time which then leads to the bones in the joints rubbing together, causing a lot of pain and discomfort. The hands, spine, knees and hips are the areas which are most effected. Although this condition can occur at any age, due to injury or other joint disorders, it is mostly found in people over the age of 50. The other widely know one, is Rheumatoid arthritis, but this type is more severe than osteoarthritis. Around 400,000 in the UK suffer from it. In this case, the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the joints, producing pain and swelling, as well as a break down of cartilage and bone. In this instance, women are three times more likely to suffer.
40
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for arthritis, but many studies and clinical trials are ongoing to find better help and information for those people who suffer. However, there is plenty to do to help make life easier for those living with arthritis. Osteoarthritis is much easier to treat as symptoms can be eased by improving your daily life. The most important treatment for this is exercise, as it builds muscle and strengthens your joints, as well as helping you lose weight and feel healthier. Visit the GP or a physiotherapist for advice on the type of exercise to do. They might also be able to come up with a weekly exercise plan specially designed for the type of arthritis and the person suffering. Maintaining a healthy weight is also important, as being overweight puts extra strain on the joints, especially those in the lower limbs, and this therefore limits their ability to repair themselves. Having a healthy diet and partaking in regular exercise is the best way to go about this. Medication may be taken or prescribed under the orders of a doctor. These can include painkillers, such as paracetamol and anti-inflammatory’s to help reduce pain and swelling in the joint, as well as corticosteroids which also ease pain, swelling, and stiffness of the area too. In rheumatoid arthritis, anti rheumatic drugs can be prescribed. Since this condition is caused by the immune
system attacking the joints, these drugs slow down the progression of this process, preventing the joints from being continuously damaged. In some cases, individuals may need surgery to help repair the joint and therefore reduce the pain, making life easier and more comfortable. This may involve a common operation, such as a hip or knee replacement. Supportive treatments are also available. Simple remedies can include hot and cold packs, or manual therapy with a physiotherapist, to help keep the joints moving, leaving them supple and the muscles around the affected area exercised. A company called MediLoop also offer a treatment known as Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF). This uses a device which helps regenerate cells, improving the healing and recovery process of arthritis and other conditions such as repetitive strain injury and muscle damage. This type of therapy gives the cells energy, helping restore their natural healing abilities. It has a number of benefits including reduction of pain and inflammation in the affected areas, improved blood circulation, balancing of the immune system and an increase in energy. The treatment has a number of testimonials from patients on how it has greatly reduced or even cleared their pain and how highly it is recommended because of its success rate and value for money. Hydrotherapy is a popular exercise for many arthritis sufferers. Not only is it enjoyable, but the warmth of the pool helps to relax the muscles and joints, the buoyancy of the water is a great support for weak joints and limbs, but as well, the water puts up a resistance as exercise is taking place. Pushing harder against the water during therapy means it is more likely to help build muscle strength, a good thing for those with muscle wasting symptoms. Many people also take vitamins or herbal remedies and feel they help symptoms. Fish oils are said to be particularly helpful to those with rheumatoid arthritis. There is always support out there to help people who feel they aren’t coping well with arthritis. From special equipment to occupational therapy, there to give support and help individuals feel safe in their own home, to charities such as Arthritis Research UK providing information and advice, there is no need to suffer in silence.

Quality dentures mean a quality lifestyle The Importance of Dentures The eyes, nose and teeth are the focal points of every face; they give the first impressions of your personality. Natural teeth grow in proportion and in harmony with your facial features and your dentures should be made accordingly. Your teeth, or your dentures, have many important functions: to support your facial muscles, to help formulate your speech, and most importantly to chew your food and start the digestive process. It is very important to chew food properly, as poorly chewed food will take longer to digest, especially for the elderly who could risk problems in the digestive system.
Choice of Dentures There are four main quality standards in denture materials. The denture base (gum coloured on which the denture teeth sit). 42

food. Denture material absorbs liquids and food odour. Daily cleaning is essential as well as professional ultrasonic cleaning in a dental laboratory at least once a year. Due to constant bone resorbtion dentures will become loose sooner or later.
2 Layer Acrylic (economy) 3 Layer Acrylic (harder wearing) 4 Layer Reinforced (hard wearing, natural look) N.F.C. (Nano filled composite) premium teeth.
Loose dentures will increase damage to the gums and bone structure, and increase the risk of breakage. Have them re-lined as soon as possible to get a good fit. It only takes a day or two.
Of course, the materials alone will not make a good denture. In the hands of a skillful and experienced Clinical Dental Technician the best results are achieved.
Have your dentures inspected by a Clinical Dental Technician at least every two years, or more frequently if necessary.
•
Dentures Need Regular Servicing Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are also in a pretty hostile environment in the mouth, being attacked by strong acid, bacteria, hot, cold and spicy
Your Dentures need Attention 1. When they become loose. 2. When teeth or denture base discolours. 3. When tooth surfaces become flat. 4. When denture base does not fit around natural teeth (in partial dentures).
www.50plusmagazine.co.uk
5. When you develop deep lines around your mouth. 6. When your chin sticks out, and the corners of your lips are constantly wet, developing sores. 7. When you stop smiling and feel embarrassed.
My Dentures have become loose! This is easily remedied by a procedure know as Re-lining. A new layer of Denture base is added to your existing Denture, improving the fit and restoring confidence.
Dentures with worn down teeth Teeth excessively worn, require a new set of dentures.

denture stable and functional. Denture construction is more art than science.
Padding dentures to reduce lines and fill up sunken cheeks will require a new set of dentures. It is advisable to have a new set of dentures made every 5 to 10 years.
What is a Clinical Dental Technician?
Should I have a spare set of Dentures made? Yes, it is very important to have a spare set of dentures for emergencies in case of breakage.
Difficulties in Constructing a Good Set of Dentures Constructing a functional and aesthetically pleasing set of dentures is the most difficult task in dentistry. We are not only replacing lost teeth, but also lost tissue matter and bone. In other words, we have to re-create your facial features as they were before the loss of your natural teeth. In most cases we do not know what your teeth looked like, what size they were or what position they were in originally. We have a few indications but mostly we have to rely on our visual and artistic judgement. At the same time we have to use our technical expertise in order to make the

Premium Plus Dentures
Although your Dentures may feel comfortable, do you need to replace them? Wearing an old denture can be detrimental to your health.
Premium plus dentures are fitted with a cobalt chromium frame as standard for you. The very best quality teeth from Germany are used to create truly natural looking smiles, and used in conjunction with the Ivobase injection moulded system we can create the best denture possible for your investment. The price includes any extras that are required including gold clasps, backings and precision attachments. All Premium Plus dentures also come with a FIVE year after care plan; meaning we will keep your denture fitting for five years with no extra cost to you.
Our advice is that a denture should be replaced around every eight years because although it might feel comfortable there are other factors to consider. If you wear dentures, it is worth getting them checked at least once a year. One of our clinical dental technicians can do this for you free of charge; sometimes it is possible to improve the fitting of a denture by simply making some adjustments but in some cases it can be a better option to replace them.
To arrange a free denture check, just call Smiles Centre and make an appointment.

PROSTATE NEWS
As we get older, we have an increasing risk of prostate cancer. Researchers have shown that Lycopene (the red colour in tomatoes and one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants) is beneficial for those at risk as well as those who already have the disease. For example, the following studies all point towards positive benefits: Harvard Medical School, USA A study of 50,000 men showed a significant reduction in the incidence of prostate cancer for men on high (tomato) Lycopene diets. “Frequent consumption of tomato products is associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer.” Kings College Hospital, London A 12 month trial involving men with confirmed prostate cancer found that about 70% of those consuming Lycoplus, a dietary supplement containing Lycopene, benefited from a much reduced rate of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) increase or an actual reduction in their PSA. “Our clinical study lends weight to the probability that dietary supplementation with Lycopene [from Lycoplus] slows disease progression in men with prostate cancer.”
Karmanos Cancer Institute, Detroit, USA Amongst a group of men with prostate cancer who were to have radical prostatectomy, some took a Lycopene supplement, some not. Following surgery it was found in the Lycopene group that more than two-thirds had the cancer confined to the prostate whereas in the other group more than half found the cancer had spread. Similarly, in the Lycopene group less than 20% had tumours larger than 4cc but in the other group the equivalent number was approximately 50%. “Lycopene as tomato extract may not only help prevent prostate cancer but also may be useful to treat prostate cancer.” Although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood, it is known that Lycopene accumulates in the prostate gland. Many researchers think that Lycopene’s antioxidant properties help to protect the body’s DNA from damaging free radicals. Others believe that Lycopene improves cell-to-cell communication, reducing the risk of the uninhibited growth seen in cancer cells. In all likelihood, several mechanisms are at work simultaneously and there is much research currently being conducted across the globe to understand these interactions. In the meantime, many men are not waiting for full scientific explanations but are turning to Lycopene to reduce the risk of prostate disease. Humans possess no mechanism to make Lycopene; instead we accumulate it from our diet. Furthermore, natural Lycopene is hardly taken up at all from the consumption of raw tomatoes and only becomes “bioavailable” if the fruit is cooked and/or processed prior to eating. Consequently, supplements such as Lycoplus EXTRA are an increasingly attractive option.
Reactivating Lycopene with Vitamin C Every time a damaging free radical is removed by a Lycopene molecule, the antioxidant becomes “spent” – in essence, the Lycopene sacrifices itself to protect the body’s DNA. However, research has shown that the presence of plenty of vitamin C allows the “spent” Lycopene molecules to be reactivated, rejuvenating them and preparing them to quench another poisonous free radical. Thus, vitamin C is believed to prolong the antioxidising effects of Lycopene.
STOP PRESS Diet rich in tomatoes may lower breast cancer risk In work to be published in 2014 in the Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism, Dr Adana Llanos from Rutgers University, USA shows that a tomato-rich diet could help to protect at-risk post-menopausal women from breast cancer because Lycopene affects the level of hormones that play a role in metabolism and cancer risk. The risk reduction was clear for older (50+) women after only 10 weeks of 25mg Lycopene per day – approximately 2 capsules of Lycoplus Extra daily.

STROKE HAS A NEW INDICATOR
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) but she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself for the rest of the evening.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions, remember the '3' steps, STR:
Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6pm Jane passed away.)
S Ask the individual to SMILE.
She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some people don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
T Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK R Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call for an ambulance immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
NEW SIGN OF A STROKE Stick out Your Tongue!
Ask the person to 'stick' out his or her tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

How to choose a Home Care provider Regulatory bodies for home care Always ensure that the home care provider is registered with the relevant care regulator for their country and in the UK, this is the Care Quality Commission (CQC) Care regulators will audit the provision of care regularly to ensure that each provider is meeting their statutory requirements.
Home care is the best option of support to enable your loved one to stay within the comfort of home, living independently. It is an affordable alternative to a care home and without the stress of moving and leaving familiar surroundings. Choosing a home care provider can be difficult as there are so many, but how do you choose the right one that will provide the quality of care that your loved one deserves. How to choose a home care provider without worrying if you are making the right decision is to have the right questions to ask or to know what to look for.
Memberships and associations Look for membership with United Kingdom Home Care Association (UKHCA), this is the professional association of home care providers. They promote higher standards of care, and act as one voice for care providers to bring about changes in legislation and policy. A good care provider will be actively involved in contributing to the betterment of the social care system. Experience and continuity of care When looking at home care providers, it is good to have an understanding of what experience they have, how long have they been operating for in the area. Also check how long the company itself has been operating and that is robust so able to provide care for the foreseeable future.
Valuing home care workers A good home care provider will value their home care workers, providing them with adequate training and regular refresher training. Investment in care staff is important to ensure that they are happy and confident in their role. Care staff should have regular supervision and be supported to gain health and social care qualifications. Free home care assessment A free home care assessment should always be provided, this includes a risk assessment. Care planning should also be, ideally person centred which means that they listen to the needs and wishes of the customer, putting them at the heart of what they do. Community involvement A Home Care provider that is active in its local community will be able to offer more than just care in the home. It will a good awareness of local services and help the cared for not be isolated within his/her home. The provider will also assist with the integration of care through having good relationships with other care and medical professionals in the area.
Y ou r Home, Y ou r Choice Getting older doesn’t have to mean becoming less active, less involved within the community, or with friends and family; if you need a little help and support to do what you want, Carewatch has the answer. We are here to understand and provide you with the type of support you want, when you want it. Making Life Easier Keeping fit and healthy is an important part of growing older and staying mobile even more so. Regular exercise and good diets are essential to maintaining your independence. However, studies show around 2.45 million people in England require help on a regular basis. At Home Mobility superstores situated around the country, specialise in products to help people live independently. They sell thousands of items to allow you to feel comfortable at home. Climbing the stairs is one task that becomes increasingly difficult as we age. But not to worry, a stair lift or extra hand rails can make this much easier. Fitted to the wall of the staircase, they create a better grip when climbing or allow you to sit and bypass the steps altogether. Bathing can become tricky too, especially with slippery surfaces. However, bath lifts and safety rails
