What is a double plain cloth? This is when two cloths are woven together at the same time. Double cloth or double weave is a kind of woven textile with two or more sets of warps and one or more sets of weft or filling.

In the throw away age when things didn't look good after wearing them, it didn't matter. Times were good with loads of choices, so we would just go and buy another one. Who really looks at the care label?

In the last couple of years the economy has shrunk. Companies

have to make a profit, so they started describing fabrics in ways which are not always honest.

For instance 100% wool does not always mean that it is new. It could be recycled, made from second hand woollen garments that have been respun into short threads. It is the short strands that sometimes poke through other garments, causing irritation or itching.

Start to look at the product label next time you go shopping.

55% Polyester, 43% Wool, 2% Elastane: A suit made from re-spun wool needs the polyester to make it durable and the elastane helps make it flexible and comfortable to wear.

Viscose: is a strong fabric which looks good and makes garments bright in colour. Watch this one; never wash it because it will crease badly and need constant ironing.

Linen is made from Flax. It is super cool in summer but creases badly.

Nylon is crease resistant because the threads are super slim. It can cause sweating and needs cleaning frequently.

Cotton is cool to wear; Ideal for summer shirts and dresses.

Silk is a natural fabric and should be dry cleaned only. It is ideal for waistcoats, shirts, formal dresses and blouses.

Caunos itself is another fascinating attraction. The largest ancient city in the Carian era, it was constructed, according to Greek mythology, by Apollo’s grandson. Those who visit these iconic ruins can discover remains of many different parts of the old city which were uncovered during an excavation, from the ancient amphitheatre to the traditional Hellenistic and Roman temples, to name a few.

Further eastwards, Kalkan lies at the heart of some of the most impressive Lycian sites. Xanthos was a site of exceptional importance in antiquity as it is thought to have been a main centre for culture and commerce.

The British Museum now houses two tombs, the Nereid monument and the Tomb of Payava, both of which were discovered at the ruins. Another tomb, known as the Harpy Tomb, is still located at the remains of the city. Only 4kms south of Xanthos, positioned on the banks of the Xanthos River, is one of the most important religious centres in the region – Letoon – where the foundations of temples can be seen. A further remain – the ancient city of Patara – can also be found in this historically rich region. Excavated in the 1980s, a magnificent Roman arch can be admired, as well as an impressive theatre. Once a prosperous

commercial city, the ruins are positioned just a short distance from Patara Beach – one of the most photographed beaches in the Mediterranean.

There are also a number of other smaller sites and one of the more interesting and unusual ones is nearby Kekova which is home to the semi-sunken city of Simena. Originally a fishing village, a 2nd century earthquake had devastating effects on Simena – however it left behind an exceptional historical site. Half of the ancient houses have become submerged, with staircases leading down underwater, where the foundations of the buildings and an old harbour can be found. In 1990, this region was declared a protected area, prohibiting swimming and diving.

Further north and on its own peninsula lies the unspoilt rural region of Bozburun, yet another area which is home to other interesting historical settlements located in ancient Caria. From here, you can explore the ancient Greek settlement of Knidos, located just a short drive away on the nearby Datça Peninsula, a ruin that is built partly on the mainland and partly on the Island of Triopion which, in antiquity, was connected to the mainland by a bridge.

INTERVIEW: GLORIA HUNNIFORD

Gloria’s early days, health & more...

Gloria Hunniford was just enjoying a few weeks near Nice in France with her husband when we chatted.

It marked a particularly busy time when she had been filming more programmes for the TV hit series Ripoff Britain, which had been extended

to cover rip-offs on holidays and on food. And Ms Hunniford, now a lovely 73 year-old with the beautiful skin and enduring looks typical of Irish people, always tries to look after herself.

“You need to keep balance, avoid being thrown off kilter,” she explains. “It’s very easy when you’re busy but I do try to take holidays and eat and sleep properly.”

She’s also a great fan of vitamins, which she takes each day, and admits

to “a certain amount of exercise”, usually walking the dogs or using her exercise bike in front of the TV. “I’ve just lost two stone, though,” she states. “It wasn’t a vanity thing – my sister was diagnosed with diabetes and I asked the doctor what I should do to avoid it. Losing weight seemed a sensible idea so I cut out both sugar and carbohydrates and the weight just dropped off.”

It feels like the popular broadcaster has always been with us. Radio and TV audiences love her, and Gloria has the enduring charm that people of all ages and both sexes find attractive and easygoing.

I once stood next to her in an aiport queue as she took a flight to her native Ireland and her fellow travellers were plainly fascinated by the VIP in their

midst, but also very warm to her.

She was named after the actress Gloria Swanson but early on she became a singer, entertaining at her dad’s concerts. He was a newspaper man by day and a magician by night.

She spent time in Canada, singing on TV and performing listeners’ Irish song requests on the radio, then returned home where she joined ITV’s new Ulster Television as a production assistant. She continued her singing, though, and got a record in the Ulster charts in 1969.

After she was interviewed on BBC radio, the producer asked her to audition as an interviewer, then hired her for Northern Ireland’s equivalent of the Today programme.

She cut her teeth on news and current affairs, moved on to a nightly news programme and finally ended up invited to work in London. Here, her friendly Irish accident and warm manner quickly won over fans. She filled in for Jimmy Young while he was on holiday, and the banter between her and Terry Wogan – whom she already knew – at the end of the programme swiftly enhanced her reputation. People felt she was a familiar friend on the air.

She was given her own show, Gloria Hunniford’s Open House, and was a daily TV fixture for five years. She still makes appearances on The One Show and became a regular once more on our screens with another very popular series Cash in the Attic, which she loves.

“They’ve got about 20 programmes already made but they’ve also now launched an interactive website and an app which is all very exciting because you can go onto the site anytime you want to, anywhere,” she says enthusiastically.

“I love that programme – I’m a great fan of antiques and I’ve collected them myself for years. I collected so many angels and cherubs one of my sons forbade me to bring any more home!

And I’ve also collected teapots and jewellery crosses.”

She loves the surprises that people get when items they discover go to auction, and thoroughly enjoys the celebrity version. “I’m always amazed at how generous the celebrities are in donating items that can be sold for charity,” she adds.

The Rip-off Britain series is another favourite with her. “I think we came along at just the right time with that brand,” she states. “The recession was just beginning and people felt even more aggrieved if they were being ripped off.”

She is proud of the fact that the evening version draws a regular audience of 5.5 million viewers “and the daytime programme has very respectable figures, too,” she asserts.

Work is plainly far from drying up for the evergreen presenter but she’s quick to state that she actually wants to work.

“I enjoy work, and I’d hope to keep on working for as long as people want me to,” she adds.

She and her second husband, Stephen Way, live in Sevenoaks, Kent, and family life is obviously very important to her. Her presenter daughter, Caron Keating, died from breast cancer after a brave fight in 2004 and any parent can start to imagine the personal devastation that brought.

“I’ve had loss before, but nothing prepares you for the terrible darkness that descends when a child dies,” says Gloria. “It’s like trying to climb out of a big hole by your fingertips and, just when you think you’re at the top, something drags you back.

“I felt like that for a long time, and many of the people who contacted us when Caron died – we had more than 8,000 letters – said it never really goes away.”

But one person’s letter did strike a chord with Gloria, and showed the way ahead for her. It was someone who

“ I enjoy work, and I’d hope to keep on working for as long as people want me to” pointed out the importance of carrying Caron’s spirit forward, “I just felt then that I knew what I wanted to do,” she recalls.

Gloria founded the Caron Keating Foundation, administered by the family and with all the funds raised being used to help charities concerned with all kinds of cancer.

The result is that, over the past years, the foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds which have gone to projects at 47 different cancer charities all around the country.

This is obviously a source of some consolation to Gloria and her family, although you suspect that Caron is in her thoughts every day. “Someone said that people never die if they remain on the lips of the living,” she states, “and I believe that.”

HOW COLOURS CAN CHANGE A ROOM It’s surprising how much the colours and fabrics in a room can vastly improve and change the look of it. Picking a new colour for the walls, or buying a new rug or carpet can mix up the style of your home and make it look brand new.

Colours in the living area are so important and have a big impact on the feel of the room and the mood of the people within it. Painting a room is a much quicker and cheaper way of decorating because it is then easier to change and redecorate in the future, without the hassle of removing and replacing wallpaper.

If you are looking for a warm and energetic environment, try a red or orange tone. This may not be suitable for those wanting to relax with the family as they are loud colours, but if you are the type of person who likes entertaining, then the warmth will brighten up the vibe of the room. Yellow is the perfect warm colour for livening up your space, but try to keep it to a feature or accent wall. Too much of it can be overpowering.

For those folk who want to feel laid back and relaxed, a cooler blue or green room might be more suitable. Do be careful of the shades you pick however. An icy blue may make visitors feel unwelcome. A warmer shade, such as turquoise, may give the desired effect you want, but make others feel more welcome as well.

For a more sophisticated feel, stick to neutral tones, whites and creams. Not only do these provide a blank canvas to incorporate furniture and patterns, but allow the room to become a peaceful setting, which looks elegant and refined.

Combinations of fabrics and patterns are also hugely inspiring when it comes to decorating and can create a

theme for your house that you may wish to follow; from a cosy cottage to a Tuscan villa. If your tastes cater to soft pastels, floral fabrics and rustic wood furnishings, then a cottage style home may be your cup of tea, where as finding wallpapers with an old plaster texture, tapestry style rugs and cushions with gold, coppers and greens infused can give the feel of Tuscany in your home.

bit risky, but if the right one is selected, it can make a big difference. Patterns can create a focal point in a big room if you feel like keeping the furniture quite simple, but try and avoid busy patterns in a small room as this can make the space seem closed in and cluttered.

FINAL TIPS...

• Fabrics can easily change up a room, don’t be afraid to experiment.

Fabric texture is also important. Kristen Schmitt says on Better Homes and Gardens that: “Texture adds dimension to a room. It appeals to our senses, both visual and tactile, which makes the room interesting.” Add some pillows and cushions to your bed and sofa; fluffy, ruffled, floral,tartan, anything that takes your fancy. Even a textured throw for the end of the bed can provide a contrast in a room. Bring in a patterned rug to create a focal point and make small rooms look larger. Round shapes in a square room can also soften the space. Don’t be afraid of contrasting patterns and colours either, but try not to go beyond three and use samples to decide on the best combinations.

• Be aware of light and colours. Warmer light coming into your house allows for cooler colours. With colder light, try a warmer colour.

• Something as simple as adding a mirror can instantly make a room look bigger.

• Patterns are good, but don’t go overboard.

You may think that adding a splash of colour to your home will get expensive but that isn’t the case. Paint is a much cheaper option than wallpaper, but how about just repainting and wallpapering one wall in a vibrant colour or pattern to add some variation. If you can’t afford a new sofa or lounge chair, find some new fabric you like and get the existing furniture reupholstered.

• Buy a signature piece of furniture or rug you like and base the colour scheme around that.

• Bright ornaments and furniture can look great in an otherwise plain, white room.

Wooden furniture is easy to transform too. Take an old chair that needs a make over, or buy a cheap one from a second hand shop. All it needs is sanding down and a coat of paint, to fit whatever mood you are going for in the room, and you have a brand new piece of furniture. The same can be done with tables, cupboards, and fireplaces.

Frames: Bowater ‘Esthetique’ 1.1 U-value, 5 chamber PVCu frames.

A few years ago, virtually all the PVCu frames systems incorporated 3 lateral internal insulating chambers, which gave the frames a U-value of around 1.8 Advances in glass technology resulted in a glass centre pain U- value as low as 1.1-1.2 a clear gap between the energy efficiency of glass and PVCu frames. In many European countries, 1.1-1.2 centre pane u value glass is the norm (Austria, for example is 100% 1.1-1.2 U-value glass). Taking into account the close proximity of the glass to the frame, this clear disparity in u values presented a problem for the more responsible PVCu frame designers. Moisture in the air is attracted to the coolest surface (the frame) forming condensation, just one reason why frames and glass should have similar U-values. The ideal conservatory will have 1.4 U-value frames 1.2 U-value glass. As a major European manufacturer, selling frames across Europe, Bowater Group Laboratories accepted the challenge to match the frame and glass U-values, a few years ago Bowater announced the development of it’s top of the range ‘esthetique’ - Europe’s first fully sculptured 5 chamber frame, driving down the U-value to just 1.4 with zero air leakage, an incredible achievement. The majority of PVCu frames (even those of many leading brands still being sold in 2014) still incorporate the old 3 chamber design, with a U-value of 1.8, losing 60% more heat through the frame, creating dreaded condensation! Swindon Safe & Warm - helping you stay warm and reducing your energy bills this winter!

Over the last two and a half years the Safe & Warm programme has been helping households across Swindon to make their homes warmer and cheaper to heat, as well as reducing the risk from falls and fires in the home. We have spoken with over 16,000 households during this time, providing insulation and heating measures to thousands of homes saving an estimated £171,765 each year on residents’ fuel bills. We have also identified over £2million of unclaimed benefits for those struggling financially, adding on average about £3,000 annually to the income of those households.

Alongside this, we have installed hundreds of measures (such as grab rails and steps) to reduce the likelihood of a fall in the home, over 3,000 smoke alarms to improve fire safety, and we have provided much needed advice on reducing energy use in the home, switching energy suppliers, reducing condensation 20

and damp problems and controlling heating.

The Safe & Warm programme is drawing to a close in 2014, so we are having a final push on enabling as many households as possible to have great value energy saving measures installed. While in previous years there have been insulation schemes and initiatives that have given cavity wall and loft insulation away for free, this has not been the case since the start of 2013. Changes to the Energy Company funded insulation schemes have resulted in far fewer households being eligible for any support at all, meaning most have been faced with having to pay full price for these measures. This can be as much as £2,000 for cavity wall and loft insulation for a detached property.

In order to help those most in need of support this winter, we have identified funds to be able to offer cavity

wall and loft insulation for eligible households for just £50 per measure.

This is a limited offer; due to end by 31st March 2014 (earlier if the funding is used up) so please enquire early to avoid disappointment. Moving home can be one of the most stressful things any of us do whatever stage we have reached in our lives.

For the over 50s it may mean the sale of a much loved home with lots of happy memories and might coincide with the loss of a partner, failing health or lifestyle change on stopping work and if you haven’t bought or sold a house for a while it might seem overwhelming.

At Bevirs we try to give our clients practical guidance as well as legal advice. No query is too small. We are here to help.

Derek Brown, Head of Residential Conveyancing at Bevirs Solicitors thinks that practical guidance is just as important as the legal work and has put together some frequently asked questions.

Q. How much will it cost?

A. Check your cost estimate includes all legal fees, VAT and Disbursements and that there are no “hidden” extras such as extra fees for acting for a Lender or preparing a Stamp Duty Land Tax Return.

If you are selling a leasehold property you are likely to have to pay the management company to provide information.

Q. I am selling my home, can I get any paperwork ready?

A. If works have been carried out on your property, e.g. building works, damp or woodworm treatment, double glazing, electrical works, the installation of a central heating boiler, then it is helpful to provide copies of the relevant Planning Permission, Building Regulations Approvals, Completion Certificates, Compliance Certificates and Guarantees as soon as possible.

If you are selling a Leasehold property, then the last three year Service Charge accounts and Ground Rent receipts would be very useful.

Q. Do I need a Survey on the property I am buying?

A. You should always consider having a separate Survey carried out which could highlight an issue of repair which requires considerable expense to put right and if discovered at an early stage, it may be possible to negotiate terms with the Seller.

Q. Do I need a Trust Deed?

A. If you are buying a property with another person perhaps another family member then you will need to think about the type of joint ownership you should have and whether you need to record what each of your shares are in the property and what will happen if either of you dies or wants to sell. A Trust Deed is a good place to record your agreement. Please discuss it as soon as possible.

Q. When do I need to insure the property?

Q. How do I know I will get a good job done?

A. If you are buying a freehold property then you will need to have Buildings Insurance in place for exchange of contracts (Leaseholds are usually dealt with by the Freeholder).

A. You could use a firm which have the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Standard (CQS) mark.

Q. Do I need a deposit?

A. The standard provision is that a 10% deposit will be needed. However different amounts are often paid and if you are selling as well as buying you may be able to use the deposit you receive on your sale for your purchase.

Q. But they told me...

A. Please bear in mind that the Contract between you and your Seller / Buyer is what is written down in the Contract itself and it is therefore important that any agreements reached between you and your Seller/Buyer are reported as soon as possible, so they can be included in the Contract.

Q. I am not sure about...

A. If there is anything at all that you are not sure about, fencing, an odd looking boundary, access, loft conversions, light fittings, mention it as soon as possible. It is much better to raise it early than at the last minute.

Dowton Cuckoo Fair This years Downton Cuckoo Fair will be 35th anniversary since we reinstated our great family day out - its friendly, fun and free to come!

The fair is held on the village greens in the picturesque village of Downton situated six miles south of Salisbury on the edge of the New Forest. In 2013 we welcomed over 20,000 visitors to our fair. We have over 250 craft and other interesting stalls on the greens and in marquees along The Borough. There is lots of fun for the family including rural craft demonstrations, Punch and Judy, clowns, inflatable’s and roundabouts in the Memorial Gardens and a farmers produce market in the junior school grounds.

FOOD & DRINK - LOW FAT WINTER WARMERS

Si King and Dave Myers are self-confessed food lovers.

Food isn’t just fuel to them, it’s their life. But like many of us they’ve found that the weight has crept on over the years.

Si and Dave have come up with tasty recipes that are low in calories and big in flavour, and many we have featured in 50 Plus Magazine.

OLD FASHIONED CHICKEN AND VEGETABLE STEW

This is real food for real people, not skinny minnies.

They are ideas for family meals.

The cider and bacon add a touch of sweetness and extra flavour to the chicken and veg, making this a lovely supper dish. Keep it low-fat by removing the skin from the chicken legs before cooking and using as little oil as possible for browning the meat and vegetables.

SERVES 4 3 tbsp plain flour 2 tsp dried thyme 4 chicken leg quarters 2 tbsp sunflower oil 4 rashers of rindless smoked back bacon, cut into 1cm-wide strips 2 medium onions, chopped 2 celery sticks, thinly sliced 150g small chestnut mushrooms, wiped and sliced or quartered if large 500ml bottle of dry cider 300ml chicken stock, (made with 1 chicken stock cube) 2 bay leaves 400g Chantenay or other small fat carrots, trimmed and peeled 2 slender leeks, trimmed and cut into 2cm slices flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper.

METHOD Mix the flour and thyme with a good pinch of salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper in a large strong 32

freezer bag. Strip the skin off the chicken legs and put them on a board.

Break the joint of each leg by bending it in the opposite direction. You may hear a small crack. Cut each leg quarter in half with a sturdy knife to give 8 chicken portions. Using a good set of kitchen scissors, trim off any visible fat.

Put the chicken portions in the freezer bag, a few at a time, and shake well until they are evenly coated in the flour.

Heat the oil in a large non-stick fying pan over a medium heat and fry the chicken, a few pieces at a time, until golden brown all over. As they are browned, transfer the chicken pieces to a large flameproof casserole dish.

Preheat the oven to 1800C/Fan 1600C/ Gas 4.

Put the bacon, onions and celery in the pan used for browning the chicken and fry for 4-5 minutes over medium heat until lightly browned, stirring often.

Add the mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes more, then tip everything into the casserole dish with the chicken pieces. Sprinkle in any flour remaining in the freezer bag and stir well.

Pour about half the cider into the frying pan and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon to lift any sediment from the bottom. Simmer for a few seconds, then pour into the casserole. Add the rest of the cider and the stock, then stir in the carrots and bay leaves and bring to a simmer on the hob.

Cover with a lid and cook in the centre of the over for 1 hour, then remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the leeks. Pop the dish back into the oven for a further 30-40 minutes or until the chicken is tender and the sauce thickened. Serve with some green beans or spring onions.

LAMB, SPINACH AND POTATO CURRY This is a low-cal version of Dave’s favourite curry - saag gosht - becuase he couldn’t bear to it give it up. If you are running short of time, cut out the fresh garlic, ginger and chilli - the curry will still taste great. The recipe contains potatoes so there is no need to serve it with extra rice.

SCRAMBLED EGGS WITH SMOKED SALMON SERVES 6 600g lamb leg steaks (about 4 steaks) 1 tbsp sunflower oil 2 large onions, roughly chopped 4 large garlic cloves, peeled and roughly chopped 25g chunk of fresh root ginger, peeled and roughly chopped 1 plump fresh chilli, (deseeded if you like) 75g medium or mild curry paste (depending on your taste) 400g can of chopped tomatoes 350g potatoes, preferably Maris Pipers, peeled and cut into 3cm chunks 450ml water 2 bay leaves 1 tsp flaked sea salt, plus extra for seasoning the meat 1 tsp caster sugar 3 ripe medium tomatoes, quartered 100g young spinach leaves freshly ground black pepper METHOD Trim the lamb of any hard fat and cut the meat into rough chunks of about 3cm. Season with salt and pepper.

Heat a teaspoon of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the lamb in 2 batches until lightly coloured on all sides. Transfer the lamb to a plate as soon as each batch is browned.

Heat the remaining oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and add the onions. Cook over a medium heat for

6-8 minutes until they’re softened and lightly browned, stirring regularly. Turn down the heat, add the garlic, ginger, chilli and curry paste and cook for 5 minutes more, stirring frequently.

Remove from the heat and blitz the onion mixture with a stick blender until blended to a purée. Or you can let the mixture cool for a few minutes, then blend it in a food processor before tipping it back into the casserole.

Return the casserole to the hob over a medium heat. Preheat the oven to 1900C/Fan 1700C/Gas 5.

Add the browned lamb to the spiced onion purée in the dish and cook over a gentle heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring.

Add the chopped tomatoes, potatoes, water, bay leaves, teaspoon of salt and sugar. Bring everything to a gentle simmer, then cover with a lid and place the casserole in the oven for 1 hour and 30 minutes or until the lamb is tender and the sauce has thickened. Check after 1 hour and give the contents of the casserole dish a good stir.

Take the dish out of the oven and remove the lid. Stir in the quartered tomatoes and spinach leaves. Cover once more and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft and the spinach has wilted.

Serve hot with some spoonfuls of fatfree yoghurt if you fancy.

This is a treat - light but tasty and packed with protein. It takes next to no time to prepare and makes a really special weekend breakfast or brunch. Shows that you can breakfast like a king and still keep the calories under control.

SERVES 2 4 medium eggs 1 tbsp freshly snipped chives, plus a few extra to garnish(optional) 15g butter 4 slices of smoked salmon (about 75g) 1 English muffin, cut in half flaked sea salt freshly ground black pepper METHOD Beat the eggs with a pinch of flaked sea salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Use a metal whisk and make sure you beat the eggs really well. Stir in the chives if you’re using them.

Melt the butter in a medium non-stick saucepan over a low heat. Pour the beaten eggs into the pan and cook very gently for 2 minutes, stirring slowly until the eggs are softly scrambled.

Remove from the heat and stir for a few seconds more - the eggs will continue to cook for a while.

While the eggs are cooking, toast the muffin and put 1 half on each plate, cut side up. Spoon the scrambled eggs over the muffins, add the slices of smoked salmon and season with a little more black pepper. Garnish with extra chives if you wish. Serve immediately.

This is the only way of ensuring your property and affairs benefit those whom you would wish to do so. People who do not make a Will are leaving unnecessary work, complications and costs to their family.

If you don’t make a Will the “Intestacy Rules” will decide which family members will receive your money and possessions after you die. Your estate does not automatically pass to a surviving husband, wife or civil partner as most people presume. Questions & Answers With Thameswood Vets I have a springer spaniel that really suffers with his ears, my vet has put him on steroids – are there any side effects to using steroids long term?

Yes, indeed there are side effects to long term steroid treatments. The choice to use them as a long-term treatment is usually a carefully made balance with close monitoring to ensure optimum benefit with minimal side-effects.

Depending on the dose, increased appetite, thirst and urination are the most obvious clinical side-effects of steroid use which can lead to dogs and cat ‘piling on the pounds’.

The less obvious side-effects would be on the organs, immune-system and overall body condition. This is more prominent when steroid are used systemically (into the body system via injections/tablets) although some topical steroid use (onto the skin surface) may also be absorbed and have these effects, though less quickly.

This is why Veterinary Surgeons conduct routine blood tests when they have patients on steroid treatment, to assess the side effects being caused by such drugs.

My dog has quite a sensitive stomach. Will hypoallergenic food(s) help her condition?

Veterinary surgeons generally only opt for long-term steroid treatment if all other avenues have been exhausted and the patient’s quality of life would suffer without it.

Having a dog with a sensitive stomach can be tricky to manage; I know this from having such a dog. If this is caused purely by sensitivity and not a more serious condition, e.g. irritable bowel disorder, then figuring out what foods set him/her off can be key.

My daughter has just bought a house rabbit for my grandson, do rabbits need vaccinations like other animals?

Yes, they absolutely do. However, the vaccinations for rabbits are for 2 rabbit specific diseases: Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) Both of these are extremely lifethreatening and highly infectious but can easily be prevented with routine annual vaccinations.

We also recommend worming, insurance among other essentials for healthy rabbits.

Many different ingredients can cause sensitivities. For some, a rich protein source can cause upset whereas, in others, the carbohydrate source may be the problem. Here is when hypoallergenic dog foods come into play. They are designed to include ingredients less likely to upset tummies and, most often than not, contain ingredients not widely used in ‘normal’ dog foods e.g. salmon and potato. The idea being that your dogs’ digestive system will not have experienced these ingredients before, will not be sensitive to them and will be able to digest it more easily.

It is always important to remember that whenever introducing a new diet, to do so gradually over a period of about 2 weeks. Some dogs are so sensitive that they may require a prescription diet from your Veterinary Surgeon. In other cases, the problem may not be dietary at all and you may need to conduct further investigations.

Don’t suffer in silence Writes Kelly Spencer Depending on the type of arthritis you suffer from, there are a range of different symptoms that can affect a person.

However, there are some that are common and similar across all types, to help you recognise symptoms of developing arthritis. Most typical is pain, with tenderness and swelling in the joint areas, but people may also experience restricted movement around the joint, warmth and redness in the affected area, weakness and muscle wasting.

Arthritis is a very common condition, known to cause pain and inflammation within the joints of the body. People of all ages can suffer from it and in the UK alone, around 10 million are known to have it.

Although there are many types of arthritis, from ankylosing spondylitis to gout, the two most common types are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis.

All forms have a variety of differing symptoms and issues that affect the person with the condition.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form and affects around 8.5 million people in the UK. This occurs when cartilage (the squashy tissue between the bones) wastes away over time which then leads to the bones in the joints rubbing together, causing a lot of pain and discomfort. The hands, spine, knees and hips are the areas which are most effected. Although this condition can occur at any age, due to injury or other joint disorders, it is mostly found in people over the age of 50.

The other widely know one, is Rheumatoid arthritis, but this type is more severe than osteoarthritis. Around 400,000 in the UK suffer from it. In this case, the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the joints, producing pain and swelling, as well as a break down of cartilage and bone. In this instance, women are three times more likely to suffer.

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for arthritis, but many studies and clinical trials are ongoing to find better help and information for those people who suffer. However, there is plenty to do to help make life easier for those living with arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is much easier to treat as symptoms can be eased by improving your daily life. The most important treatment for this is exercise, as it builds muscle and strengthens your joints, as well as helping you lose weight and feel healthier. Visit the GP or a physiotherapist for advice on the type of exercise to do. They might also be able to come up with a weekly exercise plan specially designed for the type of arthritis and the person suffering.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also important, as being overweight puts extra strain on the joints, especially those in the lower limbs, and this therefore limits their ability to repair themselves. Having a healthy diet and partaking in regular exercise is the best way to go about this.

Medication may be taken or prescribed under the orders of a doctor. These can include painkillers, such as paracetamol and anti-inflammatory’s to help reduce pain and swelling in the joint, as well as corticosteroids which also ease pain, swelling, and stiffness of the area too.

In rheumatoid arthritis, anti rheumatic drugs can be prescribed. Since this condition is caused by the immune

system attacking the joints, these drugs slow down the progression of this process, preventing the joints from being continuously damaged.

In some cases, individuals may need surgery to help repair the joint and therefore reduce the pain, making life easier and more comfortable. This may involve a common operation, such as a hip or knee replacement.

Supportive treatments are also available. Simple remedies can include hot and cold packs, or manual therapy with a physiotherapist, to help keep the joints moving, leaving them supple and the muscles around the affected area exercised.

A company called MediLoop also offer a treatment known as Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF).

This uses a device which helps regenerate cells, improving the healing and recovery process of arthritis and other conditions such as repetitive strain injury and muscle damage. This type of therapy gives the cells energy, helping restore their natural healing abilities.

It has a number of benefits including reduction of pain and inflammation in the affected areas, improved blood circulation, balancing of the immune system and an increase in energy. PROSTATE NEWS

As we get older, we have an increasing risk of prostate cancer.

Researchers have shown that Lycopene (the red colour in tomatoes and one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants) is beneficial for those at risk as well as those who already have the disease.

For example, the following studies all point towards positive benefits: Harvard Medical School, USA A study of 50,000 men showed a significant reduction in the incidence of prostate cancer for men on high (tomato) Lycopene diets.

“Frequent consumption of tomato products is associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer.”

Kings College Hospital, London A 12 month trial involving men with confirmed prostate cancer found that about 70% of those consuming Lycoplus, a dietary supplement containing Lycopene, benefited from a much reduced rate of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) increase or an actual reduction in their PSA. “Our clinical study lends weight to the probability that dietary supplementation with Lycopene [from Lycoplus] slows disease progression in men with prostate cancer.”

Karmanos Cancer Institute, Detroit, USA Amongst a group of men with prostate cancer who were to have radical prostatectomy, some took a Lycopene supplement, some not. Following surgery it was found in the Lycopene group that more than two-thirds had the cancer confined to the prostate whereas in the other group more than half found the cancer had spread. Similarly, in the Lycopene group less than 20% had tumours larger than 4cc but in the other group the equivalent number was approximately 50%.

“Lycopene as tomato extract may not only help prevent prostate cancer but also may be useful to treat prostate cancer.”

Although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood, it is known that Lycopene accumulates in the prostate gland. Many researchers think that Lycopene’s antioxidant properties help to protect the body’s DNA from damaging free radicals. Others believe that Lycopene improves cell-to-cell communication, reducing the risk of the uninhibited growth seen in cancer cells.

In all likelihood, several mechanisms are at work simultaneously and there is much research currently being conducted across the globe to understand these interactions.

In the meantime, many men are not waiting for full scientific explanations but are turning to Lycopene to reduce the risk of prostate disease. Humans possess no mechanism to make Lycopene; instead we accumulate it from our diet. Furthermore, natural Lycopene is hardly taken up at all from the consumption of raw tomatoes and only becomes “bioavailable” if the fruit is cooked and/or processed prior to eating. Consequently, supplements such as Lycoplus EXTRA are an increasingly attractive option.

Reactivating Lycopene with Vitamin C Every time a damaging free radical is removed by a Lycopene molecule, the antioxidant becomes “spent” – in essence, the Lycopene sacrifices itself to protect the body’s DNA. However, research has shown that the presence of plenty of vitamin C allows the “spent” Lycopene molecules to be reactivated, rejuvenating them and preparing them to quench another poisonous free radical.

Thus, vitamin C is believed to prolong the antioxidising effects of Lycopene.

STOP PRESS Diet rich in tomatoes may lower breast cancer risk In work to be published in 2014 in the Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism, Dr Adana Llanos from Rutgers University, USA shows that a tomato-rich diet could help to protect at-risk post-menopausal women from breast cancer because Lycopene affects the level of hormones that play a role in metabolism and cancer risk. The risk reduction was clear for older (50+) women after only 10 weeks of 25mg Lycopene per day – approximately 2 capsules of Lycoplus Extra daily.

STROKE HAS A NEW INDICATOR

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) but she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself for the rest of the evening.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions, remember the '3' steps, STR:

S Ask the individual to SMILE.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

T Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK R Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call for an ambulance immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
