SITE INTRODUCTION
STAGE AS CONCEPT
The site locates in the west of military axis in University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. It is about 800 feet long and 300 feet wide, a rectangular shape of green space surrounded by Business building and Applied Health Sciences building in the north, art design building and Krannert Museum in the south. It is totally covered by lawn with big open space full of sunlight and broad view.
Plaza Open Space
Campus is the land of students. The physical environment can have a delicate impact on the emotions of individuals. Due to preferences, people respond differently to the sunlight, temperature and other natural factors. Therefore, they create dynamic patterns and influence each other. I define this site as a stage for behaviors and activities, evolving from the designed space.
Market Concrete Pavements + Liner Trees
When people perceive the outer environment by watching, they are the audiences of the site. Once they get involved, they are the performers of the site. being a part of the "environment" and constantly influence other people.
RESEARCH DIAGRAMS Everyday a lot of people walk through this site. Students go for class or hang out, switching among different places on campus. The walk lane and bike lane on the east-west axis are important for students to travel within campus area. Students travel frequently between Business building and Art design building.

I came up with the idea of three spatial forms to create different physical experiences. People respond to this environment and choose their “existing forms, influencing each other as well.

Boneyard Creek
Riverfront Design, Fall, 2017, Individual Work Instructor: Katherine Kraszewska, PHD
PROJECT DESCRIPTION This project is a part of Boneyard Creek, which lies in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. It is a tributary of the Saline Branch of the Salt Fork Vermilion River, which is a part of the south-flowing Vermilion River and the Wabash River.

SITE CONDITION Land use in Champaign County is dominated by agricultural practices due to the flat terrain and appropriate soil properties.Wetland, forest and pasture occur obviously along Salt Fork Vermilion River and Sugar Creek.
Within Champaign County, erosion area in vermilion watershed is mainly dominated by weathering and soil erosion. Most soil erosion occur along flowline of streams and rivers.
Landcover Gis Data for vegetation mapping is retrieved from USGS Database, Erosion Gis Data is retrieved from Web Soil Survey.
The site of Boneyard Creek is between South Lincoln Avenure and West Main street. Adjacent buildings are mainly composed by residential houses. Several issues, such as flooding, largely exist and bring potential safety hazard to the residents. In addition, the site lacks of landscape asethetics and capability of resilience in face of natural disasters. The exsiting green space does not efficiently provide a buffer zone for flood control.

ECOLOGICAL PATCHES
TYPES OF EXSITING GREEN SPACE (Groupwork)
Ecological patches in the site exist in the terms of lawn and neighborhood green space along the creek at two sides. However, limited space along the creek cause the result of proper site extension.
The site research shows that the available green space in the site is not shared by public, some are backyards which are owned by single family, some are apartment lawns shared by the people living in the whole buildings, others are private land properties owned by community services, making the site less easily to be carried out.
WATER QUALITY (Groupwork) Sewage Drain Pipe Parking Lots Adjacent Buildings Creek
Types of green space is retrieved from Official 2017 Zoning Map, City of Urbana, Illinois.
From the nearest monitering stations, the temperture, PH and Oxygen of water quality were collected as shown above. PH is higher than the normal standard, which needs to be harnessed.

Due to the context, diverse target visitors are a favorable advantage for the project. There are some open green space along creek that is valuble for the site extension. However, the flooding zone threatens the quality of plants growth and involvement of human activities. Some spots in the site suffer long-time waterlogging during the year.

The goal of this landscape design is to solve the flooding issue and offer accessible outdoor recreational places, which has to balance the relationship between the waterway and adjacent land. For the waterway, the metal walls will be taken away to create natural buffer zone to enhance the resilience in the face of ecological disturbance. Flood resistant plants will be planted in the flooding zone, which functions to purify water. For the recreational places, walking trails, bank platforms and riverfront seats will be installed, providing green space accessibility. 0

Section of Residential Greenway Residential Greenway is relatively private due to the contexts. School needs to have a private ourdoor space for the students, private houses need a quiet neighborhood atmosphere. Walking trials and open space with native planting will still keep it accessible but a quiet community space without too many interactive landscape.

Wildlife habitat offers wetland area for wild animals, as well as vertical experience for visitors. Flood-resistant plants along the creek boundary will form a buffer zone, balancing the stress from submerging water in flooding season. Retaining walls both create seating structures and reinforce soil stability. The wood bridge accross above the creek provides people a better view of the water and green space.
Section of Central Raingarden The passway of Central Raingarden tries to stress the existence of the creek in the hidden section. The pavement of plaze can direct people and make the site more accessible for the local residents. Red installations are all around in the site as symbols for landmarks.
